In 2007 the City of Edmonton was named the cultural capital of Canada and the Edmonton International Jazz, Festival was recognized as one of Edmonton’s Flagship Art Festivals. The flagship designation was established many years earlier when Edmonton’s Jazz City Festival was one of this country’s premiere events. For over 30 years, the Edmonton jazz community has created, presented and supported an international festival celebrating all of jazz music’s wonderful treasures. This impressive longevity is due to a passionately committed group of community minded Edmontonians on whose shoulders our great jazz festival rests upon. The Edmonton Jazz community has created, presented, and supported hundreds of incredible jazz artists from around the world. Many jazz legends have taken to Edmonton stages including Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Wynton and Branford Marsalis, Chris Botti, John Scofield, Oliver Jones, Derek Trucks and Madeleine Peyroux, as well as hundreds of other remarkably gifted artists from our city, throughout Canada and around the world. This year’s musical talent is no exception with the inclusion of headliners

This year, we encourage our loyal patrons to introduce someone new to the Edmonton International Jazz Festival experience. TILO PAIZ
Originally from El Salvador, percussionist Tilo Paiz started his professional career at age 14 as a drummer in the 1950’s big band scene in San Salvador. Since then, he has established himself as a powerhouse performer, recording artist and band leader in the Latin American and Canadian music scene. Since arriving in Edmonton in 1990, he has performed and recorded with Tommy Banks, Bob Stroup, Gaye Delorme, PJ Perry, Pavlo, the Funk Brothers and Sandro Dominelli. Although he is known primarily as a Latin musician, Tilo refuses to be categorized by genre. His musical style embraces everything from world beat to traditional jazz to blues and rock. With more than 50 years of performing experience, Tilo continues to perform, record, teach and inspire young musicians.

Jorge Luis Torres “Papiosco”, percussionist, composer, arranger, band leader and educator, is the band leader of Iroko Project, made up of Cuban musicians eager to add their unique voices the ever evolving Canadian jazz scene. The group presents a wide variety of music ranging from jazz, Yoruba, Rumba and Cuban songs showcasing the Cuban musical tradition, mixed with elements of modern jazz and Latin bringing techniques used by forgotten Cuban percussionists back to life. An English singer, a German reedman, an Italian pianist. This remarkable trio, whose performances encompass a great arc of music, was formed around 12 years ago when Glauco and Klaus, who had collaborated in many projects since the mid-90s, asked Norma to join their duo for a couple of concerts. All three quickly recognized the potential for developing a trio with its own specific musical character.

Since then, they have made three recordings on the ECM label, the first of which, Distances, was nominated for a Grammy in 2009 and the latest, Dance Without Answer, was released in early 2014. To quote from a recent review: “The two play beautifully together, finishing each others’ musical sentences... when Norma sings they fall right in around her... they truly operate as a trio.”

Guggenheim fellow and 2012 Downbeat International Critics Poll Alto Saxophonist of the Year, Rudresh Mahanthappa is one of the most innovative composers and performers in jazz today, fusing the musical culture of his Indian ancestry and jazz with myriad other influences to create a ground-breaking artistic vision. Mahanthappa leads/co-leads several groups including the electro-acoustic quartet Samdhi, featuring guitarist David Gilmore, and the Indo-Pak Coalition with Rez Abassi on guitar and tabla master Dan Weiss. Previous ensembles include the critically-acclaimed Kinsmen featuring Carnatic saxophone legend Kadri Golpalnath and Apex, which showcased the highly influential alto-sax master Bunky Green. His second release on ACT Music & Vision, Gamak, features a fiery communion with the always stunning David “Fuze” Fiuczynski (guitar) and a return to Mahanthappa’s longtime quartet partners François Moutin (acoustic bass) and Dan Weiss (drums). This engagement is supported by Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation through USArtists International in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

Medeski Martin & Wood have won over a substantial audience that rarely responds to instrumental jazz music, let alone a guitar-less trinity purveying an unholy blend of Jimmy Smith, György Ligeti and the Art Ensemble of Chicago. Starting out in the early 90’s with a piano-bass-drums jazz setup, the threesome expanded their sound with unusual configurations. Medeski added electric piano (outfitted with distortion pedals and other effects), and began switching back and forth among Hammond organ, Clavinet, Mellotron and other keys. Wood alternated between stand-up and bass guitar, stuck paper behind his strings for a “snare” effect and occasionally employed a drumstick as a slide. Martin began keeping an international assortment of percussion instruments in his battery. John Scofield’s guitar work has influenced jazz since the late 70’s and is going strong today. Possessor of a very distinctive sound and stylistic diversity, Scofield is a masterful jazz improviser whose music generally falls somewhere between post-bop, funk edged jazz, and R & B. After a debut recording with Gerry Mulligan and Chet Baker, Scofield was a member of the Billy Cobham-George Duke band for two years. In 1977, he recorded with Charles Mingus, and joined the Gary Burton quartet. He began his international career as a band leader and recording artist in 1978. From 1982–1985, Scofield toured and recorded with Miles Davis. Since that time he has prominently led his own groups in the international jazz scene, recorded over 30 albums as a leader, including collaborations with contemporary favorites like Pat Metheny, Charlie Haden, Eddie Harris, Medeski, Martin & Wood, Bill Frisell, Brad Mehldau, Mavis Staples, Government Mule, Jack DeJohnette, Joe Lovano and Phil Lesh. Medeski Scofield Martin & Wood first recorded together on Scofield’s A Go Go (Verve 1998). That project united Scofield with Medeski Martin & Wood on material composed by Scofield and interpreted by all four musicians. In 1998, they released Out Louder, the inaugural album for MMW’s own Indirecto Records label and Medeski Scofield Martin & Wood’s first four-way collaborative recording.

Conducted by Joan Chamorro, the big band unites children from six to eighteen years old in a classic jazz repertoire with lots of swing. The project garnered wide public attention and sold-out some of the Spain’s biggest auditoriums. Featuring American jazz legends Jesse Davis, Terell Stafford and Wycliffe Gordon, this documentary is a journey led by the orchestra director that immerses us in a teaching method as unique as its results. Myriad3 was an accident. Chris Donnelly, Daniel Fortin, and Ernesto Cervini had never played together until a few substitutions and a twist of fate put them on stage together for the first time in late 2010. Since then, the trio has been making music in every jazz club in the Greater Toronto Area. The band is a true collective. Each member acts simultaneously as a leader and a sideman. They play mostly original music that features different aspects of jazz improvisation, ensemble playing and contemporary composition. Myriad3 is modern jazz, meets classical, meets pop, meets Oscar Peterson. In November 2012, the group released its debut album, Tell on Universal/Alma Records. MYRIAD3

People aspire to be masters of many skills, and Al Muirhead is one who has accomplished this dream and has no plans of slowing down. Whether it is playing a sweet and melodic trumpet solo, composing and arranging for a big band, small ensemble or orchestra, performing one-take sessions on recordings or mentoring young musicians, Al is an inspiration in the music scene and is known as an elder statesman of Canadian jazz. Earning the prestigious 2013 Heritage Award Winner at the Western Canadian Music Awards is a testament to his talent and dedication to his craft. He’s everybody’s favourite trumpet player, he’s everybody’s favourite guy, and he is the complete musician.

Dusty Groove praised its “unique sense of timing and spacing,” while Step Tempest called it “irresistible... music that breathes.” All About Jazz Italy cited Eisenstadt’s “bold structures and sure compositional voice,” while the New York City Jazz Record proclaimed “Eisenstadt’s sophisticated themes... suggest that his music has the potential to be as transformative as other non-idiomatic composers like Anthony Braxton.” Jazzrightnow.com calls Golden State “Eisenstadt’s most exploratory work to date,” while Emusic.com gave it Jazz Pick of the Week and cited Eisenstadt as “a prolific, distinctive stylist who operates with a consistently high level of quality control.” All About Jazz claims “Eisenstadt’s compositional prowess continues to yield significant rewards.” This project was supported by a Canada Council for the Arts touring grant.

Bobby McFerrin surprises us again, bringing it all back home with his new album, spirityouall. Now Bobby invites us to sit on the stoop awhile and listen as he throws some unexpected new ingredients into the melting pot and reinvents Americana. He invites us back to the great folk tradition of lifting our voices to sing together through life’s trials and triumphs. spirityouall features beloved familiar tunes like “He’s Got the Whole World In His Hands” and “Every Time I Feel The Spirit” alongside original songs which explore Bobby’s everyday search for grace, wisdom, and freedom. The new material ranges from a celebratory hoedown (“Rest”) to a polemic anthem (“Woe”), to a down and dirty blues setting of Psalm 25:15. This project embraces Bobby’s folk, rock, and blues influences without abandoning his fearless improvisational approach or his never-ending exploration of the human voice. He moves seamlessly between lyrics and wordless lines, trading phrases with his band, inviting the audience to sing

spirityouall continues Bobby’s life-long quest to integrate all the influences of the musical universe. But as in so many great American tales, sometimes it turns out that everything one is searching for is in one’s own backyard. The project honors the legacy of Bobby’s father, the great operatic baritone Robert McFerrin, Sr., the first African-American to sign a contract with the Metropolitan Opera Company and a renowned interpreter of the American Negro Spiritual. “ I always thought that someday I’d sing these songs,” Bobby says, “and that I’d have to find a way of doing it that was completely different from my father’s approach. I think the idea has been kicking around for at least a couple of decades. And it was finally time.” Three of the traditional numbers featured on spirityouall —the opening track “Every Time I Feel the Spirit,” “Swing Low Sweet Chariot” and “Fix Me Jesus”—also appeared on the senior McFerrin’s 1957 album Deep River, but similarities end there. The spirituals are about liberation and courage, the human condition, the pioneering spirit, the search for strength in the face of adversity, and the journey toward a better place, and Bobby’s versions reach for new territory. spirityouall is a deeply personal statement for Bobby McFerrin. “I couldn’t do anything without faith,” he says. “I couldn’t open up my eyes, I couldn’t walk, I couldn’t speak, I couldn’t sing. What I want everyone to experience at the end of my concerts is… this sense of rejoicing. I don’t want the audience to be blown away by what I do, I want them to have this sense of real joy, from the depths of their being. Then you open up a place where grace can come in.” Lift your voice, open your heart, and sing along.

The Benedikt Jahnel Trio features some of the most interesting and distinguished musicians in New York’s contemporary jazz scene. All of them are successful band leaders and sidemen who have proved their brilliance in numerous concerts and on records. The friendship between Benedikt and drummer Owen Howard reaches back many years; Howard was working as a guest professor at the University of Fine Arts in Berlin and Benedikt was his student. Owen’s unique sound and his magical approach to time is a revelation to every musician that has the honor to play with him and also to every listener. Spain’s Antonio Miguel has succeeded in creating a great reputation as an accompanist and as a soloist in New York, although he lived there for only three years. His sound shows the perfect balance between a lyrical touch and a hard grooving sententiousness. His relation to Benedikt grew through many jam sessions with mutual friends, especially during his brief attendance at City College New York.

An unusually versatile musician, Joel Miller has lead a wide range of ensembles, from numerous traditional jazz groups, to the electronic infused Latin funk project Honeycomb, to a unique choral collaboration with noted conductor Iwan Edwards’ and his choir Concerto Della Donna. To date, the saxophonist’s recording career spans 14 years, beginning with his debut album, Find a Way (1996), followed by Playgrounds (1998), Sky Beneath My Feet (1999), …and then everything started to look different… (2001), Mandala (2004) and Tantramar (2008). Along with winning the Opus award in 2005 for concert of the year, Miller’s fourth album, Mandala, made the All About Jazz Publisher Picks. His album Swim (2012), featuring Geoffrey Keezer, won a Juno Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Album of the Year and an East Coast Music Award. The CD featuring his original compositions was chosen as the #1 Jazz Album of the year by the Ottawa Citizen and La Presse, and reached #1 on the Earshot Jazz Charts in 2012. Miller recently released his critically acclaimed album Joel Miller & Honeycomb, featuring John Roney, Rémi-Jean Leblanc, Kiko Osorio, and Kullak-Viger Rojas. Winner of the 2013 Juno Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Album of the Year, saxophonist Joel Miller performs his uplifting music with an acoustic jazz quartet.

Modern jazz with a twist, based on a cohesive group effort rather than on personal virtuosity; that’s what the members of Trio Jérôme Beaulieu are going for. Jérôme Beaulieu, Philippe Leduc and William Côté created the band in 2011 shortly after their studies at University of Montréal. Since then, they have been using audio sampling and a variety of percussion, effects and prepared instruments to broaden the usual jazz trio’s set of textures and moods. The group lifted off quickly, winning both Montréal’s Jazz en Rafale and Festi-Jazz de Rimouski’s Grand Prize in their first year of existence. A first album entitled L’Homme Sur La Lune (Man on the Moon) hit the shelves in spring 2012 and got nominated for an Opus Prize (Jazz album of the Year). Radio-Canada’s 2013-2014 Jazz Revelation now launch their second group effort, Chercher l’Équilibre (Searching for Balance) in the midst of a year filled with projects!

David Virelles has been hailed as one of the finest young pianists in jazz. His voyage from Cuba to Canada with Jane Bunnett and now to New York has been dotted with milestones that show how gifted he is. A prized student of Henry Threadgill, his Continuum was acclaimed by critics for its study of Afro-Cuban folklore wrapped in avant garde exploration. His talents have been scooped up by noted musicians like Steve Coleman, Chris Potter, Thomas Stanko, Wadada Leo Smith and Ravi Coltrane. For his 2014 tour, he brings the brilliant American bassist Thomas Morgan and rising-star drummer Eric McPherson to further extend his explorations of contemporary music. Continuum plays original music with equal parts American experimental jazz tradition, modern composition and Afro-Cuban folkloric echoes.

Jane Bunnett has introduced a lot of great Cuban musicians to North American audiences over the past couple of decades, including Dafnis Prieto, Yosvanny Terry, Pedrito Martínez and David Virelles. Now she has assembled an exciting new sextet featuring the finest young women musicians in Cuba. Maqueque consists of Jane, virtuoso drummer Yissy García, dynamic percussionist Dayme, Yusa on tres guitar and fretless bass, pianist Danaë and Magdelys on batás and congas. All are great vocalists as well as instrumentalists, and all are in their early 20’s, except Yusa who’s a little older. Their blend of hardcore Cuban music with folkloric rhythms and jazz has a broad appeal.

Saskatchewan born, Manhattan-based pianist and composer Jon Ballantyne has released ten albums, won two Juno Awards, and has been nominated for four Juno Awards. The EJFS is dedicated to providing a professional and supportive environment for jazz artists to perform, collaborate and celebrate jazz music from around the world with Edmontonians. Formed in 2005, the EJFS produces the annual Edmonton International Jazz Festival, supports and presents the Edmonton Jazz Orchestra, Edmonton Jazz Collective, and the Jazzworks education outreach programs to ensure Edmonton’s long jazz tradition continues.
JAZZWORKS MASTERCLASSES A professional development workshop for university/college aged musicians, young jazz professionals and exceptional high school students, Jazzworks is an educational component of the Edmonton International Jazz Festival. This summer outreach program provides an inspired setting for collaboration, development and learning through mentorship. Selected performers from the 2014 Edmonton International Jazz Festival line-up have committed to sharing their knowledge and experience by leading seminars on various topics including performance, composition, professionalism and the business of music. These masterclasses were designed to offer flexibility for those unable to attend a full-week of day-time studies, providing an opportunity for pre-existing ensembles to be workshopped as well as giving individuals without a group the chance to observe the session. Particpants are able to attend a single session or commit to the entire week. Jazzworks Masterclass is an Edmonton Jazz Festival Society initiative directed by Joel Gray and Kent Sangster. EDMONTON JAZZ ORCHESTRA The Edmonton Jazz Orchestra (EJO) is one of Edmonton’s professional large concert jazz ensemble consisting of many of the city’s finest jazz musicians and educators, several of which are nationally-recognized recording artists. This premiere ensemble explores the traditions of the jazz repertoire while also presenting existing and new works by leading Canadian jazz composers. The EJO mandate is to create a professional structure where jazz musicians can conceive, compose, arrange, rehearse and perform large ensemble jazz in a concert setting. This creates a leading ensemble for Edmontonians to be proud of and a model for young musicians to aspire to. In February 2009, the EJO began a partnership with the Jazzworks band festival, connecting more than 500 young musicians and educators with the EJO through a series of workshops and a live EJO performance at the Yardbird Suite.

EDMONTON JAZZ COLLECTIVE The Edmonton Jazz Collective (EJC) is the Edmonton Jazz Festival Society’s latest live performance initiative and unites a group of professional jazz instrumentalist in a unique ensemble that showcases its members’ individual voices. EJC musicians are regular performers in the city’s jazz scene and span a variety of demographics, from seasoned veterans to emerging artists and new post-secondary graduates. The group’s central focus is the creation and development of original jazz compositions, and as part of each performance, audiences get insight from each composition’s writer.
