MESSAGE FROM FESTIVAL PRODUCER KENT SANGSTER DEAR MUSIC LOVERS! On behalf of the Edmonton Jazz Festival Society board of directors, staff, and volunteers I would like to welcome you to the 2018 TD Edmonton International Jazz Festival. This year we’re excited to present over 60 performances – with more than 200 musicians on 10 different stages to create what we hope will be a memorable musical experience for everyone: from the youngest jazz fan experiencing it for the first time, to the seasoned jazz aficionado who will experience a new band this year. The TD Edmonton International Jazz Festival owes its success to its dedicated volunteers, staff, community partners, sponsors, and loyal music fans and for this we thank you. The Edmonton summer jazz festival tradition spans over 30 years and we are proud to maintain its place among the Edmonton flagship music festivals. We continue to make the festival as accessible as possible by offering several free events as well as ticketed shows ranging from $5 to $49. There is once again a VALUE Jazz Pass for $99, as well as special offers available.

In addition to our longstanding venues like the Winspear Centre, and the Yardbird Suite, for 2018 we are excited to include the Starlite Room and The Varscona Theatre, as well as the Duo Series and the Late Night Jam Sessions at Bellamy’s Lounge in the Chateau Lacombe Hotel. Jazz is a very broad genre with many different styles. If you are an experienced jazz fan, please continue to spread the word; if you are new to jazz then take a plunge, explore and enjoy! I invite you to explore the unknown, to search into the next great jazz star in the making, or simply to discover a new form of music I know you will enjoy. There is jazz for everyone. Find yours at edmontonjazz.com and we’ll see you at the show.

MESSAGE FROM THE MINISTER OF CULTURE MESSAGE AND TOURISM FROM THE (ALBERTA) MAYOR As the Minister of Culture and Tourism, I am pleased to welcome everyone to the TD Edmonton International Jazz Festival.

On behalf of City Council and the people of Edmonton, Alberta’s Capital City, welcome to the TD Edmonton International Jazz Festival.

Edmonton’s jazz festival seems to defy the laws of physics: an infinite range of musical possibilities jam packed into just 10 days. Of course, jazz has never played by the rules. From its formative years of play in illegal speakeasies during the prohibition era through to its boundary pushing sense of improvisation, it is jazz’s capacity to surprise us that has helped make it such an enduring global phenomenon.

Now into its 13th year, this annual event is one of the highlights of Edmonton’s summer festival scene. Jazz lovers will have a chance to visit several outstanding music venues throughout our city, including the Winspear Centre, Varscona Theatre, the Yardbird Suite and many more. Whether you are a cool cat or a novice musician, this unique festival also offers something for everyone, including workshops to learn from the most seasoned professionals.

Once again, this year’s TD Edmonton International Jazz Festival boasts a phenomenal lineup of musicians that honour the genre’s storied legacy and explore its frontiers. Whether it is the Latin influences of the Spanish Harlem Orchestra and the Hilario Duran Quartet with Horacio Hernandez or funky upstarts like the Heavyweights Brass Band and Snarky Puppy collectives, there will be no shortage of cool grooves for aficionados and newcomers alike. While jazz may represent an ongoing experiment, the winning formula of Edmonton’s jazz festival owes to the commitment and enthusiasm of an incredible team of organizers and volunteers. To everyone attending this year’s festival, enjoy! I am confident you will have a great time.

I thank everyone who has worked so hard to put this incredible festival together. You have enhanced our arts and cultural community by exposing audiences to an exhilarating art form. Your investment of time and energy has helped nurture local talent and increased our reputation as a vibrant and dynamic place to live, work and play. Enjoy the festival! Yours truly,

Don Iveson Mayor

Ricardo Miranda Minister of Culture and Tourism

MARQUEE SERIES Snarky Puppy

WINSPEAR CENTRE | MONDAY JUNE 25 7:30PM - 9:00PM | NO INTERMISSION $39 TO $49 + SERVICE FEES MICHAEL LEAGUE - BASS & BAND LEADER LARNELL LEWIS - DRUMS | MARCELO WOLOSKI - PERCUSSION SHAUN MARTIN - KEYS | BOBBY SPARKS - KEYS JUSTIN STANTON - KEYS, TRUMPET | MIKE “MAZ” MAHER - TRUMPET CHRIS BULLOCK - SAXOPHONE, FLUTE | MARK LETTIERI - GUITAR After a decade of relentless touring and recording in all but complete obscurity, the Texas-bred/New York-based quasi-collective suddenly found itself held up by the press and public as one of the major figures in the jazz world. But as the category names for all three of the band’s Grammy awards would indicate (Best R&B Performance in 2014, Best Contemporary Instrumental Album in 2016 and 2017), Snarky Puppy isn’t exactly a jazz band. It’s not a fusion band, and it’s definitely not a jam band. It’s probably best to take Nate Chinen of the New York Times’ advice, as stated in an online discussion about the group, to “take them for what they are, rather than judge them for what they’re not.”

Their music is characterized by the raw, organic, and vintage sound defined by the genre. They are on a mission to keep the musical legacy of salsa dura “hard salsa” alive and expand its audience to those who love great music, not just Latin music. Grounded in the past, while focused on the future, they strive to keep the music relevant, while creating a unique and fresh approach. With four albums, and as many Grammy nominations, this Latin Jazz powerhouse knows it is crucial to continually push themselves and raise the bar. They recently released their fifth album, featuring two of America’s great jazz icons, Chick Corea & saxophonist Joe Lovano. Oscar Hernandez and Spanish Harlem Orchestra continue to raise the bar of excellence in their music.

“Her ballad performances are simply beyond the emotional and expressive capabilities of most other vocalists” –The New York Times Starting her career in Detroit in the 40s, Sheila Jordan was inspired by Charlie Parker. In the 50s she sang in clubs with NY Jazz Giants including Charles Mingus, Herbie Nichols, and later studied with pianist Lennie Tristano. She was the first jazz singer to record on the legendary Blue Note label in 1962 and sang “You Are My Sunshine” on George Russell’s The Outer View. The song influenced generations of jazz artists. In the 70s she toured with trombonist Roswell Rudd and became a founding member of the Steve Kuhn Quartet. She soon met Harvie S. Soon and they travelled extensively and recorded as one of the most innovative bass and voice duets ever. She soon paired with Cameron Brown, touring and recording. Edmonton audiences are in for a treat seeing these two legends together on stage.

PETER VAN HUFFEL’S GORILLA MASK

FRANÇOIS BOURASSA QUARTET

Ground-shaking grooves, hammering rhythms and wailing melodies, layered with explosive noholds-barred improvisations: GORILLA MASK is a type of sonic madness roaring with a restless, implacable energy that totters dangerously on the verge of total chaos. They craft spirals of sound in 4 or 5 dimensions, jabbing you in the ribs as they mess with your brain; the ebb and flow of an acutely aware trio of musicians who know what they want and know how to get it. Canadian ex-pat Peter Van Huffel is a saxophonist out of Coltrane, Ayler and Zorn, but he frames his improvisational forays in the context of a trio with hard rock dynamics, riding the churn of Roland Fidezius’ frenetic bass and Rudi Fischerlehner’s pulsating drum kit like a surfer on the biggest wave he’s ever seen.
