The 2019 EIJF will present artists from Canada, United States, Hungary, United Kingdom, Sweden, Cuba, Chile, Poland, the Russian Federation, and more.
Jazz is about exploration, both for the artists as well as the patron, in creating a unique once in a lifetime experience as true jazz is never the same twice. Jazz is a big world, it can be an exciting world and there is a great deal to explore in Edmonton from June 21-June 30, 2019. The TD Edmonton International Jazz Festival is here to help! Find your jazz at edmontonjazz.com, then tell a few friends about it. My hope is you will find something new and create a wonderful musical memory.

MESSAGE FROM HONOURABLE LEELA AHEER, MINISTER OF CULTURE, MULTICULTURALISM AND STATUS OF WOMEN As Minister of Culture, Multiculturalism and Status of Women, I am pleased to welcome everyone to the 2019 TD Edmonton International Jazz Festival. One of my biggest passions is music and its ability to bring us together, make us think, and help us appreciate the beauty around us. We are lucky to have a festival that shines a spotlight on Edmonton’s talented jazz musicians, showcased alongside some of the best international acts. Even better, this festival features free and affordable shows that make music accessible for everyone. This year, we have the chance to see headliners Joshua Redman and Cecile Mclorin Salvant, who
rank among the best artists of our generation. As for the next generation, the Next Gen Series highlights up-and-coming artists as young as 15, and is a taste of the future of jazz. I encourage everyone to flip through the schedule and discover your new favourite artist. Thank you to the organizers and many volunteers involved in putting this festival on, as well as all attendees for your support of music and the arts in Alberta. Enjoy the festival! Leela Aheer Minister

Painted in the broadest of strokes, the stories of Alfredo Rodriguez and Pedrito Martinez may seem similar: both started life in Havana, discovered their gifts and passions for music and headed to the States, where they melded the music of their homeland with a wide variety of influences, each in his own deeply personal way. As a result of their differences, Rodriguez and Martinez share a natural chemistry that makes for a galvanizing musical experience when they come together. Their first duo outing, Duologue, finds the pair exploring a range of moods and influences, from Cuban classics to collaborative original compositions to a number of unexpected favourites.

If you happen to like hard swingin’ saxophone trio jazz a la Sonny Rollins - THIS IS FOR YOU. Sonny himself is actually one of our fans. Trio LSD is one of the hardest working and hardest swingin’ saxophone trios around Europe. The music is both soft and beautiful, ugly and raw. It is catchy and explosive, it is sincerely and soulful and of course, swingin’! For Lindborg, Sjöstedt & Daniel, the trio feels like a three-headed beast when they play together. One organism, one unit and a diabolic swing. It is like every beat on the drums, every snap on the base and every tone from the saxophone are played by the whole band. “Martin and Daniel play the saxophone as much as I do” says Fredrik Lindborg.

The Shuffle Demons first broke onto the Canadian music scene with an electrifying musical fusion that drew in equal measure from Sun Ra, Charles Mingus, Run DMC and the Beastie Boys. The band was one of the first indie acts to break out on MuchMusic. This band was genre bending, highly visually entertaining, funny, and best of all, could really PLAY. All their eye catching, crowd pleasing stunts were backed up by incredibly solid musicianship and real groundbreaking playing. They play a mix of funk jazz, hard bop jazz and jazz rap, wear spectacular hand painted suits and love to parade through the audience, a perfect festival, theatre or club act.
