MESSAGEFROM TD from Canada and around the world. Framed by the unique ambience of the Prairies, Edmonton is the perfect place to experience great music.
We all know that music is the universal language. To paraphrase Diana Krall, when you’re making music, “you’re creating an intimacy that everybody feels, that it’s their experience…” That’s the magic of the Jazz Festival, an event that’s meaningful to everyone in a different way. It’s intensely personal. You can hear music or a song and be transferred back to a specific point in time, to a life event or even to an emotion. TD Bank Group is pleased to bring you the 2016 TD Edmonton International Jazz Festival, a world-class event celebrating the diversity and entertainment of music by talented artists
Music is one of many ways that TD makes life more comfortable for customers and communities across Canada. And what better way to help people come together than to share in the love of music at major music festivals from coast to coast. This incredible festival would not be possible without the amazing people involved. Thanks to the hundreds of organizers, volunteers, talented musicians and the thousands of fans who make the TD Edmonton International Jazz Festival a hit every year. We invite you to come together for the love of music.
Brian Gervais, SVP TD Branch Banking, Prairie Region

PRESENT YOUR JAZZ PASS AT THE VENUE DOOR 10 MINUTES BEFORE SHOWTIME! ACCESS BASED ON AVAILABLE SEATS.
Born in Berlin to an American mother and a French father, Jacky Terrasson is the most widely travelled of all jazz pianists. Called the “piano player of happiness” by Telerama magazine in France, he is an exhilarating musician, one of those who play the audience straight to euphoria. If we were to describe his playing, we would compare him to Bud Powell for his carefully controlled velocity on the piano keys, and to Ahmad Jamal for his sense of phrasing and knowledge of the great French composers Ravel, Fauré and Debussy. Through his fingers, Jacky mingles and melts the colours and the inventions of the great pianists of yesterday and today. He creates his own style, subtle and freshly played with facility and ease, pushed by the desire to rewrite and reinvent, again and again, every day and forever. In 2012, the former Thelonious Monk competition winner signed with Universal Jazz France after more than a decade on the Blue Note label. His first album with the label, Gouache, was a joyous celebration of his 20 year career. Terrasson’s most recent release on the Impulse! label, 2015’s Take This!!, captures the essence of his multifaceted musical makeup, which often draws upon modern post-bop, pop, hip-hop, European classical and African and Afro-Caribbean rhythms and melodies.

SOIL & “PIMP” SESSIONS
MOON HOOCH
At its core, Japanese jazz combo Soil & “Pimp” Sessions is about pulsating live performances combining the highest levels of musicianship with the coolest sounds and atmosphere. Their brand of jazz is rough around the edges, unadulterated entertainment kept at the boiling point. Calling their music “DEATH JAZZ,” they gained recognition for performing an original form of aggressive alternative jazz. The band comments: “We always felt that in the world of jazz, there was an unwritten rule that the musicians were to concentrate on their techniques and the audience was simply there to admire, like a transmitter/ receiver relationship. We wanted to break away from that and create exciting jazz with far more interaction between the players and the audience.” MOON HOOCH: MIKE WILBUR: HORNS | WENZL MCGOWEN: HORNS JAMES MUSCHLER: DRUMS For the members of Moon Hooch, commitments to consciousness, environmentalism, veganism, philosophy and peace aren’t separate from their commitment to music, but actually integral parts of it. It’s all tied to the same core approach that led to their discovery on a New York City subway platform - try, even if it’s just a little bit every day, even if it’s just with the power of your mind, to make the world less like it is and more like you wish it could be. It’s an ambitious vision, but considering the band’s track record at turning their thoughts and dreams into action and reality, perhaps it’s only a matter of time. The trio’s tours with They Might Be Giants, Lotus, and Galactic as well as on their own have only broadened the band’s appeal. Wherever Moon Hooch plays, a dance party soon follows.

The Berner Brothers, Doug and Don, both born and raised in Edmonton, strive to recreate some of the music of the Brecker Brothers. Joined by a stellar group of local musicians, this promises to be an exciting and high energy show.

Ruth was a large influence in Gregory’s life, having encouraged him to sing in church from an early age. It was also from his mother’s knee that he learnt the dogged, patient and respectful work ethic that has been so beneficial in helping him build his craft. Gregory released two albums on the Motéma label, 2010’s Water and 2012’s Be Good, before signing with Blue Note Records and releasing Liquid Spirit in 2013. Liquid Spirit was well received by critics and enjoyed commercial success rarely achieved by albums in the Jazz genre, reaching the top 10 on the UK, German, Danish and Dutch album charts. The album’s popularity can be attributed to growing up in Bakersfield and its mostly migrated population that brought with it gospel, blues, rhythm and blues, jazz and soul. Singing the music of that bygone era is what informs Gregory’s music of today.

JOE LOVANO
JOE LOVANO: TENOR SAXOPHONE | LAWRENCE FIELDS: PIANO PETER SLAVOV: BASS | LAMY ISTREFI: DRUMS For the last three decades, Joe Lovano has distinguished himself as a prescient and path-finding force in the arena of creative music. From his Grammy-nominated symphonic work to his role as Gary Burton Chair of Jazz Performance at Berklee College of Music, Joe fearlessly challenges and pushes his conceptual and thematic ventures in a quest for new modes of artistic expression and new ways to define the jazz idiom. In 2014, Joe won awards for Multi-reeds Player and Tenor Saxophonist of the Year from the Jazz Journalists Association and Tenor Saxophonist of the Year from Down Beat Magazine. Joe has spent many years collaborating with two other premier tenor saxophonists of his generation - Dave Liebman and the late Michael Brecker in the collective Saxophone Summit. In 2008, Joe assumed the tenor of the touring and studio ensemble, the SFJAZZ Collective. Also in the Collective were trumpeter Dave Douglas, trombonist Robin Eubanks, and fellow Blue Note recording artist, vibraphonist Stefon Harris. Joe has released 23 celebrated albums on the Blue Note label, with the last three focusing on the dynamic young quintet, Us Five.

The Both Sides Now Quintet is a jazz ensemble fronted by and featuring the original music of Edmonton based vocalist, composer and arranger, Kate Blechinger. Praised for her innovation and charisma, Blechinger draws influence from a variety of sources, but focuses on her two musical loves - folk music and jazz music. She takes influence from the sincere, lyrical storytelling typical of folk music icons like Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen and Neil Young, and injects her stories with jazz harmony, instrumentation and improvisation reminiscent of artists Ella Fitzgerald and Becca Stevens. The result is an intriguing and totally individual blend of styles that keeps audiences engaged and entertained.

She has taken poems and lyrics that possess a personal resonance for her and framed them in original new compositions that utilize vocals for the first time. The result is an eclectic collection that incorporates elements of pop, art song, classical, folk and jazz. The project may be difficult to categorize, but it is charmingly accessible. The fluent playing of Amanda and her A-list ensemble matches the melodic eloquence of her compositions, while the poetic power of the lyrics and poems shine brightly.

With only one voice and one guitar, Mike Rud magically weaves multiple melodic lines without multi-tracking. The result is a ‘miniature’ band that lights up jazz classics, originals, and even Bach. On his last album Mike wrote for a large ensemble. More recently on Miniatures, Mike is the ensemble. The Montrealer has lived and performed all over Canada, holds a masters degree from McGill University, and studied in New York City with guitar icon Jim Hall.
