Fathers’ Day
Giving
This Sunday, June 21 is Father’s Day. It came up on me pretty fast this year. My father passed away a few years back so this day is not about getting together with him to show my appreciation. But it sure is about getting together with him spiritually. I often wonder what he would think of my adventures and the world around us. It is nice. Anyways, treat your dad well folks. He has done a lot more for you than you could imagine.
I saw a lady out front of the mall crying about losing $200. So I did the right thing and gave her $40 from the $200 I had just found.
Backwards Parade With Canada Day coming up the District of Invermere is putting together a ‘Backwards Parade’. “What is that?” you ask. Residents, businesses and organizations are invited to decorate their places in red and white to celebrate Canada. People will be invited to drive by for viewing (if you consent to put your address out there) or they can view online. Photos will be on Invermere BC Events Facebook page. There are a few categories with a $50 gift certificate to the business of your choice. Register by June 25 by emailing events@invermere.net.

Solstice Event There is a wonderful event happening at the Radius Retreat on Sunday, June 21, the Summer Solstice. It is also International Yoga Day so the event will offer various yoga sessions from 10 am through to 9 pm. Space will be limited so you will want to preregister at www.radiusretreat.com/events. There will also be a drum circle hosted by Patrick from 8 to 9 pm. Everything is on a by donation basis. Everyone is welcome.
Comfort Food Often I find my belly in a bit of a knot, for whatever reason. Sometimes I am hungry, other times maybe stressed. For me, food always seems to help. Sweet foods were a favourite for most of my life. Now it seems to be toast. Warm, freshly buttered and maybe a bit of honey or jam. Yummy.

So the warriors have done their work. I feel so much safer now. Elmer Fudd and Yosemite Sam have been disarmed. Whew, thank you. Of course neither of them actually shot anyone or anything in 80 years but that doesn’t matter. Elmer will be carrying a scythe around at times. So much less scary. At least we can still play all those video games where we ourselves are shooting and blowing people up. They aren’t nearly as violent as Elmer. In summary folks, what is happening to the world and why are we just allowing it to happen?

Dad’s Cool Cake Who loves ice cream? Mostly everyone. How about Dairy Queen ice cream cakes? Very yummy. Dad’s love ice cream cakes. The sweet ice cream, filled with chocolate crumbles and an amazing soft chocolate fudge. Wow. Dairy Queen has some talented cake people there. Go check out the options for a custom designed cake or you can pick up a regular one on Father’s Day.
What Did I Miss? I am a little bit limited on all the events that happen in the valley. Being just one person it is hard to keep up. So if you are holding an event and you want to tell everyone in the valley about it, it is important that you contact The Valley Peak by emailing rob@valleypeak.ca. I will likely be stuck at home on a dialysis machine.

I have the worst sleep patterns of anyone I know. I wake up every 90 minutes due to a full bladder so I never really get into any REM sleep. This evening I slept for the little bit and am now up very late writing. This makes me susceptible to nodding off during the day whenever I feel warm, comfortable and safe. I am the nap king.

The human race is an interesting study. Every single one of us is so different from any other one. That is definitely something worth studying a bit and also celebrating. We all think so differently than each other. Unfortunately, another human trait is fear. Fear of being different, thinking differently, acting differently or even living differently. But what are we actually afraid of? Terrified actually? We are afraid of being judged for not just nodding in agreement or falling in line with the general opinion. It is quite scary. But it is also kind of sad. We have learned to care so deeply about what others think of us that we will betray ourselves. I know that I have done it myself many, many times. One of the problems with that is that sometimes (more often than you might think) your thoughts are just as valid as any and you are actually part of the majority. The silent majority that are also afraid to speak’ I have to admit that I hold many thoughts back when I write The Valley Peak. But I am doing my best to be honest about some of what I see out there and I hope that every once in a while we are all honest, at least with ourselves.

The mosquitoes are a bit quiet so far but we know they will be coming out in very large numbers this year. It is quite annoying, really. I have heard some ideas on how to eliminate them from your back yard or deck areas. I am going to share the best one with you. Take a large bottle of blue mouthwash (any type), add 3 cans of stale beer (I know that part hurts) and 3 cups of epsom salts. Mix until dissolved. Spray over the entire area and you will be mosquito-free. They say this will last for 80 days (or so). It is worth a try.

Watson’s Waddle I am so in charge of the show around here. I love it. I hope all dogs have this figured out. I shed a bit of hair and I am getting a great brushing. I wander toward my dish and I get a refill of fresh water and/or food. I glance at the door and I am being offered outdoor freedom. There is so much more to all of this. I put my chin on a knee and I am getting ear and chin scratches. That same chin on the couch and I get invited and even assisted to this beautifully soft resting spot. A roll onto my side and a front leg lift and it is belly scratch time. I set the pace on every walk. Brisk if I feel like but more likely slow and scenty, as I stop to take a sniff of every object. Plus I get to leave a mark of my visit at all these places. And treats. So many very nice people offer me tiny little snacks here and there. I have come to recognize my favourite treat spots. Helping deliver the papers is fun. So if you are a dog out there, make sure you have you full game on. Life can be amazing.

Auto Correct I often wonder who does the correcting programming for my phone. If I text the words ‘Have a nice dsy’, it will change ‘have’ to ‘gave’ and leave the word ‘dsy’. I am not sure who that would make any sense to but it has taught me to read most texts before I send them.

This Sunday, June 21 is the summer solstice for 2020. This is the day that the Sun reaches its northernmost peak from the Equator. It is actually directly above the Tropic of Capricorn. The northern hemisphere experiences the longest day (most daylight) of the year. Unfortunately, the days get shorter from here on in. Within the Arctic Circle, they experience 24 hours of sunlight on this day while in the Southern Hemisphere everything is the opposite. This year it matches with Father’s Day so we get to celebrate our dads all day long.
Canadian Sports Trivia Answer Wayne Gretzky won the National Hockey League’s Most Valuable Player award 9 times in the 1980s. He won from 1980 to 1987 and again in 1989.
TMI The world is full of acronyms TMI (Too Much Information) is one of them. I often put some pretty personal things in The Valley Peak and on occasion, someone will mention that it might not be that good of an idea. But I like to be fairly open in life. I think that everyone should know that we all have difficulties to work through in life. It has been very interesting finding out how many folks suffer with kidney issues and we all know there are many, many people affected by cancer. And I do get many compliments on how I write with honesty and from the heart. Thanks for those who notice.
Self Serve I asked my surgeon if I could administer my own anesthetic. She said, “Go ahead, knock yourself out.”

One of the easiest ways to achieve happiness is to provide happiness. The more you give away, the happier you will find yourself. One great way to give happiness is to volunteer. There are so many local organizations that are volunteer-based and they have so many opportunities to volunteer. Anyone can find something that suits them. But it is up to you to find a fit. Most groups do not know about your loves and skills so you have to find the one that works best for you. I guarantee you that it is a good thing to do. You will feel better in so many ways. Good luck out there.

Anxiety Factor My brain is constantly on a mission to cause the rest of my body some stress issues. I have been trying to figure out what is causing me grief. I have noticed recently that it often comes as I am putting an issue of The Valley Peak together. I worry that some people won.t like it or find it offensive. I am a bit weak that way. So I really want to thank the huge support of many of my readers. I appreciate the emails. It has been quite incredible really. Thanks for reading.
High Cost So you think swimming with dolphins is an expensive adventure? I swam with sharks and it cost me an arm and a leg.
Fishing Tips Have a look at the insects that are around you. Fish are carnivorous and insects are what they like to eat. For you to have good success fishing, you must offer something that they might want to eat (or attack). Are there dragonflies and damsel flies around? How about caddis or mayflies? Are there flying ants or grasshoppers blowing onto the lake? Do you see water boatmen or leeches in the water? Use these clues to determine what the fish are most likely eating at the time. If you can ‘match the hatch’ you are likely to be successful. Enjoy.

Complementary Paper
Our government is starting to mention that. They would like to see no cash out here as it is a huge factor in private business and barter systems. They want to be able to monitor every little transaction we make. I hate electronic banking. I have had more than $12,000 taken from my accounts and just lately my credit card was compromised and deactivated. The Canadian government is also trying to pass a bill allowing access to every Canadian’s money if they deem necessary to help in an ‘emergency’ (like Mastercard needing another 60 million lol. Pay attention folks.
The Valley Peak is a complementary (free) paper. The printing costs are covered by the advertisers. It is also a complimentary (positive feedback) paper. I try to find good things to write about to help people feel good while reading. Lately I have been getting tons of compliments from readers. They are very impressed with the positive outlook, the jokes and the amount of useful information packed into such a small space. They also enjoy my open health discussions. Many read it from cover to cover. So why not put your advertising into The Valley Peak? It does get read top-tobottom by a lot of people every week. Plus the ads are very affordable. Really. All the contact information is on the top of every page.
It Was That Year (From page 4) In 1926, ‘Winnie the Pooh’ was published, the first successful flight over the North Pole took place and William Lyon Mackenzie King became Prime Minister of Canada.
Gorgeous Mornings I never really considered myself a morning person. More of a night hawk actually. But Watson and health issues have changed all that. I am now awake every hour or two to get up and go to the washroom. So often I just get up, and sometimes at 5 am in the morning. It has been a great discovery to see how beautiful the world is in the morning. This morning was incredible as Mt. Nelson was lit up by the sun rising from the East. It was glowing. See the beauty out there folks.
Book Lovers Why is it called the novel corona virus? Well, it’s a long story
Where I Was The page 6 phot is an old one that highlights two things. It is Andi Schoni’s bread table when he attended the Invermere Farmers Market. Both are now open on Saturdays in separate locations.
Pretty Sad Okay for the past few years now I have been able to fill this week’s issue with all kinds of information regarding Canada Day. You know, get your float ready for the parade and contribute to the Kinsmen Fireworks. Sadly due to the current situation, ‘COVID Phobia’. Played out by the random rules of our health officials, those events are cancelled. It is sad as they brought so many people, locals and visitors, together for a great couple of days.

The District of Invermere’s property tax due date will remain as July 2, 2020 and all property owners are encouraged to pay their property taxes, if they are able, on or before the due date. In order to assist you, District of Invermere Council has passed a bylaw delaying penalties for late payment by roughly three months due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. All taxpayers can make payments until September 30, 2020 without penalty. A 5% penalty will be applied to any unpaid property taxes after September , 2020. This includes penalty on any unclaimed Home Owner Grants. A further 5% penalty will be applied to any unpaid property taxes after October 30th, 2020. This allows you to make payments without penalty until September 30, 2020. Although you may still pay your property tax before then if you are able. We hope this provides some relief during these challenging times.
