Ο Robert Graves* (Εγώ ο Κλαύδιος, Αποχαιρετισμός σε όλα αυτά, Το Χρυσόμαλλο Δέρας, Κόμης Βελισάριος κλπ), γνωστός και από το βιβλίο του "The Greek Myths", στο μικρό διήγημά του "The Myconian", παραθέτει ως εξής την απάντηση ενός Μυκονιάτη όταν ρωτήθηκε, από ένα Ρωμαίο ευπατρίδη, από πού κατάγεται: "από τη Μύκονο, το αιγαιοπελαγίτικο νησί. Δεν είναι πολύ μεγάλο, αλλά είναι αρκετά φημισμένο. Και ο λόγος είναι, γιατί οι Γίγαντες που επιτέθηκαν στον Ουρανό είναι θαμμένοι κάτω από τα γρανιτένια βράχια της, τα οποία εκσφενδόνισε εναντίον τους ο Ηρακλής. Έχουμε και του Αίαντα τον τάφο επίσης, του "ήρωα του Τρωικού Πολέμου"... Αν και το γεωγραφικό "ανάστημα" της Μυκόνου με τα 85,5km2, τα 341m της υψηλότερης κορυφής της και τους 10.000 κατοίκους, είναι σχετικά μικρό, το αποτύπωμά της στη συλλογική συνείδηση είναι τεράστιο και διατηρεί ζωντανό το ενδιαφέρον για ό,τι σχετίζεται με αυτήν.
The timeless charm of Mykonos
Robert Graves* (I, Claudius, Good-Bye to All That, The Golden Fleece, Count Belisarius, etc.), also renowned by his book "The Greek Myths", cites in his short story "The Myconian" the answer of said man when asked where he hails from by a Roman nobleman: "From Myconos, the Aegean island. It’s not very big, but quite famous. Why, the Giants who attacked Heaven are buried beneath our granite rocks, which the God Hercules threw at them. And we show the Tomb of Ajax, too a Trojan War hero." Although the geographical stature of Mykonos with an area of 85,5km2, the 341m of its highest peak and its 10,000 inhabitants, is rather small, its footprint on the collective unconscious is enormous and keeps the interest on everything related to it alive.

Δεν είναι μόνο οι αμμουδερές παραλίες, η κοσμοπολίτικη ζωή και η γειτνίασή της με τη Δήλο, που διατηρούν το ενδιαφέρον για τη Μύκονο. Κυρίαρχο συστατικό είναι το έμψυχο υλικό, ο πολυμήχανος Μυκονιάτης, ο οποίος κληρονομώντας από τους θεούς ένα άγονο βράχο (στην ουσία ένα νεκροταφείο ηρώων, κατά τον Graves), είχε την ευστροφία να δημιουργήσει ένα σύγχρονο μύθο και μέσα σε μισό περίπου αιώνα να βάλει το νησί του στο επίκεντρο του παγκόσμιου ενδιαφέροντος. Το περιοδικό ek, αντλώντας υλικό από το περιβάλλον που δημιούργησε αυτός ο σύγχρονος μύθος, παρουσιάζει για πέμπτη φορά, την ειδική έκδοση MykonosVillas. Το εγχείρημα ξεκίνησε το 2002 και συνεχίστηκε με επιτυχία το 2005, το 2009 και το 2013, παρουσιάζοντας την προσπάθεια του σύγχρονου αρχιτέκτονα να μετρηθεί με τον αρχέγονο αιγαιοπελαγίτη πρωτομάστορα. Στην έκδοση αυτή συνεχίζεται η παρουσίαση της διαρκούς προσπάθειας νέων και λιγότερο νέων αρχιτεκτόνων να εντάξουν με περισσότερη ή λιγότερη επιτυχία τα έργα τους, σ' ένα περιβάλλον "σφικτά" οικιστικά δομημένο και συγχρόνως ανταγωνιστικό. Δομημένο, διότι χάρη στη διεθνή της φήμη η Μύκονος, παρά την πρωτοφανή δεκαετή κρίση της ελληνικής οικονομίας και ειδικότερα της ελληνικής κατασκευής φαίνεται πως λίγο επηρεάστηκε, συνεχίζοντας με ξέφρενους ρυθμούς την ανοικοδόμηση, συγκρατώντας παράλληλα τις τιμές των ακινήτων της. Ανταγωνιστικό, διότι έχει από καιρό περάσει η εποχή που οι σύγχρονες κατασκευές στη Μύκονο, ήταν λίγο έως πολύ επιτυχημένες γραφικές αναπαραγωγές -σε μεγαλύτερη κλίμακα- του παραδοσιακού μυκονιάτικου "χωριού".
It's not only the sandy beaches, the cosmopolitan lifestyle and the proximity to Delos that maintain the interest in Mykonos. The predominant component is the living material, the ingenious Mykonean who, having inherited a barren rock from the gods (essentially a heroes’ cemetery, according to Graves), had the ingenuity to create a modern myth and within half a century to place the island in focus of global concern. EK magazine, drawing material from the environment created by this contemporary myth, presents for the fifth time the special edition MykonosVillas. The project started in 2002 and continued successfully in 2005, 2009 and 2013, showing the effort of the contemporary architect measuring against the primordial Aegean craftsman. This edition continues to present the constant efforts by young and less so architects to integrate their projects more or less successfully within a "dense" urban structured and simultaneously competitive environment. Structured because, due to its international renown, despite the unprecedented ten-year long crisis in Greek economy and especially Greek construction, Mykonos was little affected, continuing its reconstruction with frenetic rhythms, while holding the property values. Competitive because the time when contemporary constructions in Mykonos were more or less successful picturesque reproductions -on a larger scale- of the vernacular Mykonean settlement has long passed.

Κάτω από αυτό το πρίσμα, η Μύκονος άθελά της έχει γίνει το πεδίο εφαρμογής μιας προσπάθειας να ενταχθεί με επιτυχία -άλλες φορές εμφανώς και άλλες συγκαλυμμέναένα σύγχρονο αρχιτεκτονικό λεξιλόγιο, σ’ ένα τραχύ φυσικό περιβάλλον με αντίξοες καιρικές συνθήκες και ήδη διαμορφωμένο παραδοσιακό καμβά. Ο σύγχρονος αρχιτέκτονας, έχοντας αφομοιώσει τα μορφολογικά στοιχεία της κυκλαδίτικης παραδοσιακής αρχιτεκτονικής, καλείται να εξασκήσει τη δημιουργικότητά του, ερμηνεύοντας εκ νέου το "πλήρες και το κενό" και τη σχέση τους, που είναι βασικά συστατικά του αρχιτεκτονικού σχεδιασμού. Παρακολουθώντας τη διαχρονική εξέλιξη της αρχιτεκτονικής στη Μύκονο μέσα από τις μονογραφίες MykonosVillas, γίνεται κανείς μάρτυρας της γόνιμης και δημιουργικής πρόκλησης που προσφέρει το νησί αυτό, στο σύγχρονο αρχιτέκτονα. Και η επιτυχία του εγχειρήματος αποκτά επιπλέον αξία στο βαθμό που γίνεται εμβληματικό παράδειγμα για την εξέλιξη, γενικότερα, της σύγχρονης αιγαιοπελαγίτικης αρχιτεκτονικής.
Under this light, Mykonos has unwittingly become the scope of an effort to integrate successfully -sometimes openly and sometimes covertly- a contemporary architectural vocabulary, in a harsh natural environment with adverse weather conditions and an already formed traditional canvas. The contemporary architect, having assimilated the morphological elements of vernacular Cycladic architecture, is called to exercise his creativity, by interpreting anew the "whole and the void" and their relationship, which are basic components of architectural design. Watching the evolution of architecture in Mykonos through MykonosVillas monographs, one becomes a witness of the fertile and creative challenge offered by this island to the contemporary architect. The success of the endeavour acquires additional value to the extent that it becomes an emblematic example of evolution in general, of contemporary Aegean architecture. Thanasis Hatzilakos Architect

This project is a major renovation and extension of an existing house in the Kounoupas area of Mykonos.
Η κατοικία βρίσκεται σε επικλινές οικόπεδο με νοτιοανατολικό προσανατολισμό, που επιτρέπει τον ορθότερο δυνατό ηλιασμό καθώς και πανοραμική θέα στο απάνεμο λιμάνι του Ορνού.
The residence is situated on a sloping site with south-eastern orientation that allows for the most appropriate possible insolation and panoramic views of the sheltered harbour of Ornos.

Τοποθετημένη σε μεγάλο υψόμετρο στο λόφο πάνω από το αεροδρόμιο, σχεδόν στην κορυφογραμμή, με φόντο το βράχο του Κούνουπα, η κατοικία έχει απρόσκοπτη θέα 180o προς τη νότια και δυτική ακτογραμμή του νησιού, τη χώρα της Μυκόνου και τη Δήλο.
The house, located at a high altitude on a hilltop just above the airport, almost at the tip, with a background of the iconic rocks of Kounoupas, has an incredible 180ο vantage point of the view that extends to the west and south coastline of the island, Mykonos Chora, and the island of Dilos.

On the western side of the island the holiday home, with a total surface of about 700m2, enjoys panoramic views to Mykonos Chora and the great Aegean blue.

H ασυνήθιστη διάταξη της κατοικίας,συνολικής επιφάνειας 700m2, υπαγορεύτηκε από τους γιγάντιους βραχώδεις σχηματισμούς και τους προϋπάρχοντες κτιριακούς όγκους, διασκορπισμένους στην πλαγιά του οικοπέδου, που ενσωματώθηκαν στον τελικό σχεδιασμό.
The unusual layout of the residence with a total surface of 700m2 was dictated by the giant rock formations and the pre-existing building volumes which, scattered on the slope of the site, were integrated in the final design.

The residence in Elia with a total surface area of 300m2 is located on higher ground, in the heart of a boulder; the 0.2 hectares plot is especially arranged among the mountain mass so as to combine privacy and unique views.
Η κατοικία βρίσκεται σε οικόπεδο με έντονη κλίση στην τοποθεσία Πουλί, πίσω από τον Ορνό, στη δυτική πλευρά της Μυκόνου, με απρόσκοπτη θέα στη θάλασσα και το νησί της Δήλου.
The residence is situated on a relatively mild slope in Pouli, behind Ornos, on the western side of Mykonos, with unobstructed views to the sea and Delos Island.

Το έργο αφορά στην εκτεταμένη ανακαίνιση και αναδιαμόρφωση μιας παράκτιας βίλας του 1970, με εκπληκτική θέα στη θάλασσα, το λιμάνι και τη Χώρα, διατηρώντας παράλληλα το αρχικό της αποτύπωμα.
This project involved the extensive renovation and remodelling of a 70’s coastal villa, with spectacular views of the sea, the port and Chora while retaining the original house footprint.
Η κατοικία βρίσκεται σε οικόπεδο πάνω σε ύψωμα στο Πυργί, ανάμεσα στις γνωστές τοποθεσίες Paradise και Super Paradise, με νότιο προσανατολισμό και απρόσκοπτη θέα 180ο στη θάλασσα.
The residence is on a high ground plot in Pyrgi, between the renowned locations of Paradise and Super Paradise, with a southern orientation and unobstructed 180ο views to the sea.
