CNN y su problema de credibilidad con los latinos en AmĂŠrica W

ASHINGTON, D.C. - CNN presenta el segmento de su serie "Latino in America" que busca, en cuatro horas, ilustrar los logros de los latinos y los retos que enfrentan dĂ­a a dĂ­a en Estados Unidos. Sin embargo, el especial no hace menciĂłn alguna de su controversial presentador Lou Dobbs, quien por los pasados aĂąos ha utilizado su programa en CNN, Lou Dobbs Tonight, como plataforma para diseminar falsedades y estereotipos negativos sobre los inmigrantes latinos y la comunidad hispana en ge neral. En una columna publicada en el diario La OpiniĂłn, Frank Sharry, director ejecutivo de America's Voice, escribiĂł que la serie de CNN "no menciona a Dobbs ni los insultos que por buena parte de las 260 horas de programaciĂłn anual el presentador lanza contra los latinos al centro del publicitado especial." "Mi organizaciĂłn, America's Voice, junto a otros grupos nacionales le estĂĄ pidiendo a CNN que retire a Dobbs de su programaciĂłn, aunque el verdadero problema estĂĄ en la cĂşpula de mando de la cadena. What Every Expectant Mother Should Know

A

s with the most strains of the flu virus, young children, the elderly, those with comprised immune systems and pregnant women are especially at risk. The H1N1 strain of flu carries a greater risk of complications and death compared to the traditional flu. This is due to the fact that the H1N1 virus causes more severe respiratory complications much faster. As a maternal-fetal medicine specialist, I am very concerned that pregnant women understand the dangers of not being vaccinated for both the seasonal flu and particularly the H1N1 strain of virus. Pregnancy weakens a woman's immune system making her more susceptible to catching viruses. A pregnant woman who already suffers from asthma or another chronic respiratory condition is at a greater risk for complications. There is an 8 percent or 1 in 12 risk of death if a pregnant women becomes infected with the H1N1 virus. In addition, if a pregnant woman needs to go to the hospital and ends up on mechanical ventilation due to respiratory complications, the baby can suffer from decreased oxygen. This has the potential of causing neurological damage to the baby. It is also important to note that the majority of pregnant women who did not survive after contracting the swine flu were otherwise healthy. Getting both the H1N1 and seasonal flu vaccine is the best protection you can have to avoid contracting the flu. You should get both vaccinations to be fully protected. These vaccinations will also give protection to your unborn baby for the first six months of life. It is best to get both the vaccines before you become pregnant or if you are already pregnant in the first trimester of pregnancy. If possible, both vaccines can be given on the same day, but should be given in different locations such as one in your right arm and one in your left arm. The nasal spray vaccination should be avoided during pregnancy as it contains live virus. If you have suffered from a recent illness, you should check with your physician as to when it is safe to get the vaccine. The side effects from the H1N1 vaccine are similar to those from the seasonal flu vaccine. Side effects include soreness, redness, and swelling at the injection site. Some women may experience muscle aches, headache, low-grade fever and nausea. These symptoms should disappear in 1-2 days. The H1N1 vaccine is made in the same way, in the same facilities as the seasonal flu vaccine. The main difference is that a different strain of inactivated or killed virus is used. The seasonal flu vaccine has been used for many years on pregnant women with no short or long-term risks to the mother-to-be or baby. A big concern among pregnant women is that receiving any type of vaccine during pregnancy will increase the chance that their unborn baby will be autistic due to the mercury content in the vaccine. The amount of mercury (thimerosal) in a single dose shot is extremely small, less than the amount in one spoon of canned tuna. However, several million doses without mercury will be made available for pregnant women. It is important to see your doctor as soon as possible to get an antiviral medication. The benefit of receiving the H1N1 and seasonal flu vaccine far outweighs the risks of contracting the virus. This is a very serious virus that will kill nearly 40,000-50,000 this year. If you are pregnant, make sure that you get vaccinated as soon as possible. y Uncle Valentine would have smiled this past Monday, October 19, 2009 when the Justice Department, via a memorandum, advised the federal prosecutors located in the 14 states, which includes California, to stop enforcement efforts directed at dispensaries legally established under enabling state laws. The Federal Attorney General has decreed that there were better uses for its personnel and resources. This change in operational attitude by the Federal Office of the Attorney General has a domino impact that has not been fully assessed. California passed Proposition 215 in 1996 as the national trendsetter. Over time, 13 other states made the use of marijuana legal under their state laws. Attorney General Eric J. Holder said, "We will not tolerate drug traffickers who hide behind claims of compliance with state law to mask activities that are clearly illegal." (New York Times, October 20, 2009). It is evident that "States Rights" under the U.S. Constitution are being recognized, expanded and defined by this memorandum. Congress must now address this issue by crafting legislation, which establishes national standards for medical use. Or even recreational use. Then it will be up to the Judiciary to do its job. It seems that the business of production, distribution and sale of marijuana has taken a small step towards becoming a legal commodity in our economy. The distribution and sale of marijuana is already a major source of funding for Mexican cartels that are currently fighting their own

government and each other to control the access routes into the United States. Is this memorandum an admission by the Executive branch of our government that the "War on Drugs,"which has been waged over the past several decades, is

being abandoned? Does this change in official position indicate that the business of narco traffickers will be addressed as the business enterprise that already exists? This change of posture is welcome because it will enable addressing narco traffickers from a business position. Currently these enterprises are responsible for very large cash flows that are not subject to taxation or any business licenses.

In the recent past, I have presented the concept that the State of California needs to license the production of marijuana since it is already deemed to be the chief cash crop grown here. There is already an extensive market for this natural product, which was introduced during the 1910s as a commercial source of natural fibers. Our state will never know how much tax revenues can be realized in this niche market. These tax revenues could be used to balance the state budget. One indication of the amount of taxes to be realized is the recent agreement of established dispensaries to contribute millions to those cities’ general fund. Could it be that San Jose's City Council needs to encourage the development of two or three marijuana dispensaries? The medical use of marijuana has been well established by several medical studies. The effective agent is a psychogenic compound called tretrahydrocanabinol. It is very possible now that one of the major pharmaceutical corporations will quickly move to take advantage of this opportunity to profit from the legal sale of marijuana. The New York Times article ends with the following statement, "Advocates of medical marijuana say it can reduce chronic pain, nausea and additional symptoms associated with cancer and other serious illnesses. In 1996, California became the first state to make it legal to sell marijuana to people with doctor's prescriptions." Thirteen other states have followed. My Uncle Valentino told me not to start using it until pain was insufferable. He used it to deal with his chronic arthritic pain. Δ

First Flow Ceremony to Celebrate Completion of Award Winning Project

AN JOSE - On Tuesday, Oct. 20, the Santa Clara Valley Water District celebrated the completion of construction of the Lenihan Dam Outlet Modifications Project with a First Flow Ceremony. The project, which drew a lot of attention when water levels dropped in the Lexington Reservoir revealing the ghost towns of Lexington and Alma for the first time since 1989, has been completed on time and on budget. The ceremony, to be held on-site, will include a tour of the newly constructed tunnel. "Now that this project is finished, I can say

with certainty that this has been one of the most successful projects the water district has ever completed," said Board Chair Sig Sanchez. "Not only are we done on time and within our budget, but this project is a stellar example of how an agency, a contractor and the community can all work together." The purpose of this project was to provide a solution to a problem that was first discovered during an inspection of the dam's outlet pipe in 1989. The inspection revealed a partial collapse of the steel pipe, which meant it had buckled. De-

spite attempts to repair the pipe, the buckling reoccurred over the years.

"Not only are we done on time and within our budget, but this project is a stellar example of how an agency, a contractor and the community can all work together." While the structure was safe, the water district had been limited by state regulators to release just a little more than one-seventh of the outlet capacity. This restriction has meant that the district could not make a full release of significant amounts of water prior to a series of heavy winter storms that might pose flooding risks. After considering 10 different options, including relining the existing outlet with a thickersteel pipe, the water district concluded that creating a new outlet pipe that runs adjacent to the dam would be the most effective way to restore the operations of the dam. With construction finished, the operational abilities of the current outlet facility are greatly improved. The modified outlet consists of a 54-

inch concrete lined steel pipe located inside of an approximately 2,000-foot long maintenance tunnel that runs through the eastern abutment of Lenihan Dam in St. Joseph's Hill. The project also includes a sloping, multi-port intake structure and shaft located in Lexington Reservoir, and an outlet structure located adjacent to Los Gatos Creek. This modernized system will allow the water district to make controlled releases from the reservoir's reserves with greater efficiency, which is particularly important during major storms. In total, the construction of the project took two years to complete at a cost of $50 million. While any construction project has inherent dangers and risks, Lenihan included a substantial amount of underground and confined space work with the tunnel excavation and the abandonment of the existing outlet pipe. It is a testament to the safe way this construction site was run that, with more than 155,000 hours worked, there were no incidences that resulted in a missed workday. This was a great accomplishment by all parties involved, especially contractor Flatiron Construction Inc., and was acknowledged by the San Francisco Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers, who awarded the Lenihan Dam Outlet Modifications Project with the Project of the Year award in the "Large Projects" category.

"Es imprescindible que los estudiantes estén al día con las fechas límites" -afirma Vallejo. El empezar temprano, les ayuda llevar un control de los plazos de exámenes, de solicitudes y de ayuda financiera. Tienen que acordarse de enviar sus notas y resultados de exámenes, pedir cartas de re-

comendación por adelantado y escribir un ensayo personal para la solicitud. La mayoría de los estudiantes toman un examen estandarizado de admisión universitaria, como el SAT. Éste examina las destrezas que los estudiantes aprenden en la escuela secundaria matemáticas, lectura y escritura - destrezas cruciales para el éxito en la universidad y en el trabajo. El SAT se ofrece durante todo el año, y muchos estudiantes lo toman en 11mo grado. Lo más importante es tener en cuenta las fechas límites que ponen las distintas universidades para recibir los resultados. La mejor manera de prepararse para el SAT es estudiar duro en la secundaria y tomar el mayor número de cursos avanzados ya que los estudiantes que los toman, sacan puntajes más altos en el examen. LATINO HEALTH COALITION HONORS SENATOR CEDILLO WITH LIFETIME CHAMPION AWARD

OS ANGELES - The Latino Health Alliance honored State Senator Gilbert Cedillo (DLos Angeles) with its Lifetime Champion Award for 2009, yesterday as part of their annual Health Alliance Policy Briefing and Reception at the state capitol. The Reception was co-hosted by two Alliance members, the Latino Coalition for a Healthy California (LCHC) and COFEM (Consejo de Federaciones Mexi-

canas en Norteamerica). Cedillo was selected to receive the honors in recognition of his legislative leadership on health issues. "Our member organizations have counted on Senator Cedillo's office as a steadfast partner on health care priorities for Latinos, and all Californians, for more than ten years now. His leadership has been unwavering and has resulted in significant achievements including expanding health care access for the children in our state under Healthy Families, funding community clinics, and advocating for quality standards of care," shared Al Santana, Executive Director of LCHC. Cedillo authored the Cedillo-Alarcon Community Clinic Investment Act, which resulted in a $50 million investment into local community health clinics, and Healthy Families Enrollment, which expedited enrolment into the Healthy Families program for children. He's also authored bills limiting the HMOs ability to automatically deny requests for evaluation and treatment and to establish counseling services as part of HIV/AIDS testing programs. "We must recommit to our investment in health and human services. So much has been lost in the budget battles; we lost focus of the children, seniors, and families impacted by draconian budget cuts. I am honored to be selected by the Latino Health Alliance and pledge to do all I can to keep our eyes on the prize - stable and quality health care for all Californians," remarked Cedillo.

The flu is classified as a pandemic because it is a new virus and it is difficult t o tell how mild or serious the illness from this virus ma y be. Since it is a new flu virus, people have little or no immunity (protection) against it. In Santa Clara County, approximately 170 people have contracted the virus and ten have died. "The sympt oms of the virus include fev er, cough, vomiting, sore throat, headache, nausea and vomiting," said Dr. Marty Fenstersheib, Health Officer for Santa Clara County. "The average age of people infected with H1N1 is 17." Fenstersheib added that people who have illnesses such as diabetes are also at risk of being infected.

Like an y flu virus , H1N1 is spr ead when droplets are coughed or sneezed into the air by an infected person. People who are near the infec ted person (within about 3 feet) can become sick if they breathe these dr oplets. Flu virus can also spr ead when a person t ouches an infec ted person's droplets. These droplets can be on another person or on a sur face like a door handle or tablet op. You can become infected when you touch these droplets, then touch your own eyes, mouth or nose. "This virus can not be ignored and we have to take every precaution that is necessary," Fenstersheib said. The federal government is working with vaccine manufacturers to produce a safe vaccine against H1N1. Assuming t ests go w ell, ther e should be enough vaccine, but early shipments will be limited. It will be important to first get the vaccine to those who are at highest risk for illness or serious complications because of H1N1. This includes children from

the age of 6 months old to young adults to the age of 24 years old, especially children under the age of 2 years and pregnant women. "Our healthcare workers will be the first to receive the vaccine because they are the ones that will be caring for those who bec ome ill," Fenstersheib said. "We just need to work hard and keep the community informed of the latest developments." Diabetes Awareness Picks Up Speed, On Twitter And On The Racetrack (NAPSA)—As a leading professional race car driver, Charlie Kimball continues to prove that, with pr oper management, diabetes does not have to be a roadblock. Pelosi se apiadó, la abrazó y se solidarizó con la familia. Desde entonces no ha pasado nada y mientras tanto la angustia diaria sigue para esta familia. "Llevo 17 años esperando" "El hermano de mi esposo es militar y ha servido tres veces a Iraq y no ha sido posible arreglarle los documentos a mi esposo . Trató de arreglar y no puede. Lleva 17 años viviendo en este pais bajo la sombra con el miedo a ser deportado" dijo Juana de Los Angeles. Mientras Juana contaba entre lágrimas esta situación los hijos no cesaban de llorar y expresar su tristeza. Los testimonios públicos se hicieron en el marco de la visita de la Secretaria de Seguridad Nacional de Estados Unidos Janet Napolitano quien participó en una conferencia en la Universidad de Santa Clara. Activistas se unieron y participaron en pasado 15 de octubre en una protesta que reunió a delegaciones de Los Angeles, San Diego, Idaho, Nevada, Washington y Seattle. ¿Hasta cuándo habrá una reforma migratoria? ¿Cuánto más tienen que sufrir los hijos de las deportaciones y redadas?

Los padres deben planificar con quien dejar a sus hijos pero mientras tanto no deben de dejar de salir a los par ques, de asistir a las iglesias , es decir de seguir la rutina familiar", explica Ruth Rodriguez de los Primeros 5 de la comunidad de Monument en Concord. Ante la pregunta si deben quedarse los hijos aquí y los padr es allá o irse todos juntos. Rodriguez sostiene que cada caso es difer ente y no se a treve a hacer algún comentario al respecto. along with Superintendent Jose Manzo on the fifth annual Dictionary Day. Mrs. Wright's third grade class at McCollam Elementary was one of the classes that opened up a box with brand new dictionaries as part of the celebration. All third grade classes received a box that students get to keep. Third graders are expected to know how to use a dictionary and it is a very crucial literary skill they must develop. An estimated 1,600 books were received and the district was one of the 25 districts chosen for the project.

he bell rings and class is about to begin. Grammar is out of the way, recess comes around, then math and finally lunch. After lunch, science and history are explored and the next day all over again, except this time it's at a different school with a different teacher and different classmates. This may become a reality for many students in the Alum Rock Union Elementary School District (ARUESD). Parents, students, teachers, and staff were given a presentation by ARUESD Superintendent Jose Manzo at Lee Mathson Middle School on October 14, 2009 about possibly consolidating schools. Three elementary schools have been nominated as well as two middle schools. The schools in no par ticular order are Goss, Slonaker, Rogers, Pala and Ocala. The schools were chosen within the last 30-45 days since the presentation. "We have an excess capacity, we need to realign our resources to match our needs," said Manzo. The class size and enrollment information for each school was collected in four months and the facts stood out to the members of the board. Every parent was given a copy of the charts and the details were also made available. "It's not us that created this situation, but it's us that have to solve and come up with viable options that are responsible for our students right now," said Manzo. "And we have some time to plan to be able to do that in an appropriate and thoughtful way." The presentation explained how the schools would be leased and some revenue would be expected. The money would then be used to pay the deficit the school district is facing. Parents were given all the tools to better understand the situation on a more factual level and as people listened, the room seemed tenser. "If we as a c ommunity don't want him to close the school , he's not going t o close the school ," said Veronica Gonzalez, parent and aunt of Goss students. "He should take care of the other schools that need more help." Many of the people were opposed to the idea of consolidation. A microphone was set up for parents to express their concerns to the superintendent. "My two daughters are having a beautiful experience at Goss and they took it as a threat when I told them that the school might be closing," said Maria Vazquez. "If this happens, only a minimum of our children will graduate." The various remarks made by frustrated parents took into account the economy and they knew something had to be done, but they were not happy about closing schools at all. Parents offered options but little things can only do so much. "We'll continue to work diligently with our students, with our community and come up with options that are going allow us to function as a school district," said Manzo. No school has been chosen. More meetings are scheduled to further hear what parents have to say. "I would like the school to last until my great grandchildren live," said Rogelina Chavez, parent of a Goss student.

The U.S. Hispanic market is booming. As the Hispanic buying power nears $1 trillion, the 46 million Hispanics now living in the U.S. wield a powerful influence on the American consumer economy. This suggests that strong cultural ties continue to differentiate Hispanics from non-Hispanics, regardless of age and degree of acculturation. Hispanics are growing in numbers and have more money to spend and enjoy spending it. Unlike its U.S. counterparts, the Hispanic household

is younger, with the head of household anywhere between 25 and 44 years old. The under 44 Hispanic market is growing from a purchasing power of $295 billion in 2008 to $397 billion by 2010. What’s not to love about the Hispanic consumer? To marketers everywhere, all the signs are there. Retailers and manufacturers cannot ignore the astounding growth of the Hispanic consumer market representing 15% of the U.S. population and a projected buying power of $1.2 trillion by 2012. But how does one tap into the famed loyalties Hispanics are known for? Making a Hispanic consumer feel welcome is the first key. Retailers will find that a simple gesture of having a simple sign that says Bienvenidos (“welcome” in Spanish) can be a good step in the right direction to let Hispanic consumers know that they are being invited to shop in their store. Even English-dominant Hispanics will appreciate that people of their heritage are being welcomed into their store. Take that one step further by having bilingual staff and a few signs that explain offers in English and Spanish, and you may have a loyal customer for life, a loyal customer who readily uses word of mouth as a means to inform friends and family where they shop. The opportunity is growing, now is the time to start reaching out to Hispanic consumers with messages targeted to their lifestyles and buying habits.

o hay crisis que mate la pasión de una de las c e lebraciones más vivas y latentes en nuestras comunidades como lo es el "D ía de los Muer tos". Una celebración en donde se honr a a todos aquellos que pasaron al más allá y a quienes se quedaron por aquí a celebrar con respeto, color y alegría este día tan especial. En el Área de la Bahía muchas ciudades ha organizado sus propios eventos y especialmento en los barrios la tinos donde el champurrado y el pan de muertos se vende a diestra y siniestra. En San José Este viernes 23 de octubre se vive desde muy temprano esta celebración. Ya no se quiere ni esperar el 1 de noviembre sino desde ya comenzar a vivir esta in teresante celebración llena de color. El Día de los Muertos es un homenaje a la vida. Folklórico Nacional Mexicano Presenta el XXXIII "Festival de la Vida" y el "Círculo de Remembranza" una oportunidad para recordar a los miembros de nuestra familia y amigos que no están más con nosotros. Hay un evento programado en el Teatro Dr. Anthony Soto del Centro de Entrenamiento para el Empleo (CET) localizado en la 701 de la calle Vine en San Jose. La celebración está prevista a las 7:00 pm y los bolet os están a $10 y $12. Se realizará la tradicional cena a $7. Es un evento que permite tener vivas las memorias de nuestr os seres queridos. Las personas están invitadas a llevar las fotos de sus ancestros, amigos y familiares que partieron de este

Algunas escuelas, médicos y dentistas tienen programas similares, búsquelos. 9) Ojos que no v en, estómago que no sien te. Lleve los dulces al trabajo o tírelos. Los niños no comerán lo que no ven. 10) Sea el Ejemplo. Los padres tampoco deberían comer muchos dulces durante Halloween. Es importante que se transformen en modelos de vida para sus hijos.

Trucos para un Halloween Saludable

1) Planifique de Antemano. Elabore un plan antes de Halloween para tener una idea de lo que sus hijos c onsumirán ese día. Hable c on maestros (algunas escuelas realizan eventos de Halloween), vecinos y quienes c elebren fiestas para ponerse de acuerdo sobre qué tipo y qué cantidad de dulces se entregarán a los niños. 2) Negocie con sus Niños. Hable c on ellos sobre las expectativas para Halloween. Asegúrese que completen sus tareas o que haceres antes de ir trick-or-treating. 3) A Cenar Primero. La noche de Hallo ween, sírvale a los niños una cena muy nutritiva antes de que salgan de trick-or-treat. Eso reducirá su apetito por los dulces. Coditos de trigo in tegral con queso, elaborados con leche de

bajo contenido graso, acompañados con verduras es un buen ejemplo. No se olvide de servir un vaso de leche light con la comida. El consumo de leche fortalece los dientes, previene las caries y aumenta los niveles de calcio, vitamina D y potasio. 4) Alternativas Saludables y las no Comestibles. Considere repartir ar tículos escolares como lápices o borradores que son muy útiles. Pequeños juguetes también, u otro tipo de cosas, como calcomanías que siempre gustan mucho a los niños. 5) Halloween con Actividad Física. "ASTRO BOY": EL CINE RECUPERA A UN ROBOT ADORABLE Por Martin del Palacio llá por 1963, cuando la t elevisión en casi todo el mundo er a en blanc o y negr o y no había mucho espacio en la programación para los dibujos animados, un niño robot llamado Astroboy conquistó los corazones de millones de niños alrededor del planeta. No era para menos, ya que el diminuto personaje era por un lado tremendamente poderoso, y tenía todo lo necesario como para poner en su lugar a los villanos más detestables, pero por el otro, exhibía una fragilidad emocional tan fuer te que a uno le daban ganas de abrazarlo. Al igual que Pinocho, su sueño era ser aceptado como uno más por los humanos, pero todos le recordaban permanentemente su condición de robot. Aquella primera serie de dibujos animados que fue creada por el maestro Osamu Tezuka está c onsiderada hoy como la piedra fundamental del género animado conocido como animé, producido en Japón y con características únicas no solo en cuanto a temáticas, sino también en cuanto al estilo de dibujo y la animación. Tezuka había creado a Astroboy en una his torieta en 1952, aunque originariamente no era el personaje principal, sino uno secundario, como ha ocurrido c on casi todos los que luego se tr ansformaron en verdaderos símbolos de la cultura popular. Aunque exitoso en las revistas, dentro del género de comic conocido como manga, la popularidad mundial de "Astroboy" coincidió con su primera versión televisiva. Y aunque luego volvió a la pantalla chica en dos series más, una de 1980 y otra de 2003, no logró capturar la atención mundial con la misma intensidad que en su primera encarnación. Pero ahora, gracias a una ambiciosa pr opuesta de los estudios Imagi de Hong Kong, Astro llegará por primera vez a la pantalla grande, en un largome-
