s a New Year, 2009, begins, our advent vigil must involve more than watching and waiting. These need to be active rather than passive. President-elect Obama and his transition team face many daunting challenges when he becomes our Chief Executive Officer as well as our Commander-in-Chief on January 20, 2009. It may be wise to examine what we may expect, what we wish will happen, and what may really happen. Certainly, our personal attitude and actions will have much to do with this transitional process, which may extend for months because not everything can be done at once. Also, those who set the priorities face very critical issues such as our monetary system that impacts us all. It is best that we face our common destiny involving change with faith, hope, and charity. Also, we must accept an era of change in our government at all levels. This means that many traditional levels of entitlements will change as new expenditure equilibriums are established. Our government must begin to deal, on a pay as you go basis, with the needs of the people rather than cater to the needs of captains of industry who are well connected and influential. Their focus was on the use of capitalism to accumulate wealth rather than its creation to meet essential needs of society. Capitalism is a very effective way to accumu-

late wealth, however its major flaw is the inequitable distribution of enough wealth to the many in a manner that permits a humane reasonable livelihood. Our leaders must focus again on the universal force that fueled the American consumer economy. That force was the concept that wage earners must be paid enough to have some discretionary income. We now know that the ‘trickle down theory’ favored by the present Republican administration simply does not work. All that infusion of ‘bail-out money’ (over a trillion dollars) still has not had an impact on the lives of ordinary citizens. Congress expected banks to open up lines of credit to the small businesses and other ventures that would stimulate the economy. Fortunately for us, a tested model already exists and is being used today in Africa, India, and Southeast Asia. It is the micro business loan process which places unsecured funding at the village level to enable economic and business development guided by local entrepreneurs. The use of this approach requires confidence, hope, trust and faith that are certainly the traits that President Elect Obama has projected throughout the election process. The provision of ‘unsecured micro-loans to small business enterprises (SBEs), SBEs must become the target for the next round of federal monetary empowerment because money made available at this ‘bottom of the
pyramid’ level of our economy will be expended quickly and prudently. SBEs (defined as those having less than 100 employees) have the propensity to hire and train local labor and provide needed services to their community. This behavior puts earned wages directly into the hands of laboring folks who are eager to work for a living. All at this level want a hand up rather than a hand out. Therefore, future approaches which attempt to rectify our failing economy must focus on the placement of money in the hands of those whose propensity to wisely use it is above 95 percent. Many of these folks live from check to check and already know how to expand their dollar’s purchasing power. Those SBE’s receiving funding must be thoroughly vetted to ensure that agencies such as the Small Business Administration (SBA) are dealing with SBE’s whose management possesses necessary capacities, integrity and honesty. SBAs must be funded to award ‘unsecured micro-loans’ to SBEs. SBEs must become the target for the next round of federal monetary empowerment because money made available at this ‘bottom of the pyramid’ level of our economy will be expended prudently sooner than later. This approach will demonstrate our faith and hope in capable people and their creativity. We all must create that inclusive diversity which is dynamic. Our common destiny involves these changes.Δ

he ignoble end of the Bush presidency could not have been more eloquently accented than by the pair of shoes flung at him by an Iraqi journalist as he shouted, “This is a farewell kiss, you dog! This is from the widows, the orphans and those who were killed in Iraq!” Like “the shot heard round the world” referring to a musket shot initiating the American Revolutionary War, and later to the gunshot assassination of an archduke that plunged Europe into World War I, this incident has caught the imagination of the world as an act of defiance by a David against a vastly more powerful Goliath. Initially viewed by millions on news reports, there are now countless websites displaying the video, along with almost instantaneously created videogames to test your skill at shoe tossing with our president-as-target’s “Being There” expression (as acted by Peter Sellers’ simple-minded gardener mistakenly elevated to presidential advisor in a 1979 film), or with an expression, not of shock and awe (as our Iraq invasion strategy), but rather Alfred E. Neuman’s “what, me, worry?” look. Google these names if you are unfamiliar with these satirical expressions of end of the American Century Americana. Indeed, 28-year-old Iraqi TV reporter Muntadhar al-Zaidi, has lived his whole life under the brutal regime of Saddam Hussein, until replaced by our hopefully less brutal invasion-occupation-sectarian militias bombings of this unfortunate nation. In spite of the existence or non-existence intelligence failure of Saddam’s mushroom cloud weapons of mass destruction, and the Bush Doctrine of pre-emptive war, (war to prevent war) or the “Iraq has better targets than Afghanistan” doublespeak, shoe tosser al-Zaidi is correct to connect President Bush with the widows and orphans, called collateral damage. International aid agencies estimate at least 600,000 such deaths, two million misplaced refugees, and a devastated infrastructure that fails to provide safe water, sewage, health care, electricity, and education to most Iraqis after a five-year and trillion-dollar invasion and occupation. To be sure, there was brutality before our 2003 U.S. invasion against Saddam, the former general that our State Department and Pentagon encouraged to take-over the socialist regime of his one-time mentor. Why would we do this? Because our foreign policy was to support anyone claiming anticommunism, and later as a counterweight against Iran, our other former client state under the Shah, who we installed after our other U.S. encouraged coup against that nation’s democratically elected socialist government that planned to nationalize their one natural resource, petroleum. So, to protect U.S. and British petroleum corporate interests, we have been manipulating these nations’ ruling class governments against each other and against their own people for more than half a century. The question for the American people is: have we done enough damage? Have enough people been killed? Can our continuing military occupation accomplish anything good for the Iraqi people? Some say, “if we leave before the job is done there will be bloodbath.” We have seen this movie before. This was the refrain during our war against Vietnam. Yes, there was a bloodbath in Vietnam, with more than 2-3 million dead, most killed during our occupation, by American bombs and napalm, many still dying by Agent Orange and land mines. It is time to leave Iraq; we have created enough bloodbaths in this tragic land. As a nation we cannot expect forgiveness from the widows and orphans or those killed in Iraq, but George “Goliath” Bush must forever duck from the shoes thrown at him by Muntadhar “David” al-Zaidi. The image of this American president ducking shoes will live forever in infamy and on the internet.Δ

l Centro de Capacitación para el Empleo del Programa de Inmigración y Ciudadanía (CET) ha conseguido dinero del Fondo de Oportunidades para ayudar a los inmigrantes a pagar su cuota de solicitud de ciudadanía. El programa de ayuda denominado “Saving for Citizenship” (Ahorrando para la Ciudadanía) funcionará todo el año 2009. Los participantes deben completar 12 horas de clases de alfabetización financiera. Para participar en el programa, las personas interesadas deben asistir a uno de los siguientes talleres gratuitos para la ciudadanía una selección inicial de su elegibilidad para la ciudadanía: Los talleres en español se realizarán el 10 de enero a las 8:45 am. Los días 14 y 28 de enero a las 5:30 pm y el sábado 7 de febrero en las instalaciones de CET ubicado en la 701 Vine St. San José CA, 95110.

Los participantes que asisten a estos talleres GRATIS también recibirán información sobre el proceso, los beneficios y los riesgos legales de la aplicación para la ciudadanía. Free Wi-Fi Service Widely Available at King Library

AN JOSE, CALIF. - An enhanced level of free WiFi service is now available to members of the public using the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library. As a result of network modifications made by San Jose State University and the Associated Students of San Jose State University, all laptop users with a valid San Jose library card will have full Internet access when using the University’s Wi-Fi network
within the King Library. Previously Wi-Fi access at King Library had been limited to use of the library’s web pages, catalog and databases, the San Jose State University and the City of San Jose web pages. This latest development offers library cardholders more flexibility and convenience. In addition, with few exceptions on-site visitors will have access to the full range of both SJSU and SJPL subscribed databases con-
taining thousands of articles published in magazines, journals, newspapers and other reference resources. Free Wi-Fi access is available during all library hours. All that a public user requires to log on to the University’s Wi-Fi network within the Library (other than a wireless-enabled laptop) is an active San Jose library card ID and PIN. his year, I am going to lose weight by exercising and eating right. I am also going to pay off all my bills, save money for the future and give back to my community by volunteering at a local non-profit. Unfortunately, like many people, I will probably forget about many of my New Year’s resolutions. For some people New Year’s resolutions, such as quitting smoking, are difficult to keep because they are not motivated or encouraged to keep them. Thus, New Year’s Resolutions within a few
weeks usually end up becoming distant memories. Fortunately, the U.S. government has gathered some information to help people keep their New Year’s Resolutions. One popular resolution is losing weight. As far as exercising goes, it is recommended that one exercise three to five times a week for 20 minutes. Using a treadmill or exercise bike is a great way to burn calories. A walk after dinner is also recommended. Eating right is also an essential part of living a healthy life. Eat food that is low in fat such as vegetables, fish, turkey and chicken (without the skin). Drink water more often when
eating. Water is a thirst quencher and has no calories. Most important, do not skip meals. Skipping meals will only make one want to eat more. Smoking kills many people every year. This is why many pledge to quit every New Year. In order to control cravings, it is recommended that one wash their hands or take a shower. A change of scenery such as going outside or into a different room can also help control ones cravings. Keep other things around such as sunflower seeds and sugar free gum as a substitute for cigarettes. Δ

omenzando el 17 de febrero del presente año las transmisiones televisivas serán via digital. El propósito es transmitir imágenes claras y como todo en algún momento tienen que mejorar, la televisión en los Estados Unidos se lo ha propuesto para el 2009 según acuerdo con la Comisión Federal de Comunicaciones de EU (FCC). Los televisores con antena no van a funcionar después del 17 de febrero y esta transición será un problema para todos los televidentes sino toma las medidas pertinentes. Muchas personas no tienen idea de qué se trata esto. Los más afectados serán las personas de la tercera edad y las personas que no tienen la informa-
ción en su propio idioma. EO se compromete en el transcurso de las próximas semanas (seis semanas más) a informar a
través de una columna sobre esta transición. Esto es un asunto de derecho civiles cuando de información y acceso a ella se trata. “El paso a la televisión digital es un asunto de derechos civiles. No queremos que las personas se queden sin un vital elemento como es la información y lo que pasa alrededor del mundo. Estamos trabajando para informar sobre esto proceso en ciudades como San Francisco, San José, Oakland”, dijo Kenneth Maxey coordinador en San Francisco. Ancianos e inmigrantes los más afectados “Las personas de la tercera edad no entienden absolutamente nada de tecnología. No saben qué es un GPS, un IPhone, laptop y les resulta complicado entender la diferencia de análogo y digital”, dice Anni Chung de “Self Help For the Elderly” en San Francisco. Los inmigrantes serán afectados porque la información no se está proporcionando en su propio idioma. Por parte de la comunidad latina la televisora local de Univisón 14 (San Francisco- San José) ha iniciado un temprana información. “Nosotros empezamos una campaña en el año 2007. La información se está dando en español y estamos tratando de llegar a todos lados. Pero no somos organizadores de la comunidad y requerimos que organizaciones comunitarias se involucren y lleguen a más personas a través de talleres informativos. Existen cupones para que las familias de bajos recursos se ayuden a pagar la caja convertidora y es importante que lo soliciten porque el proceso demora 4 semanas”, explica Ca rolina Echevarría Directora de Asuntos Públicos y Comunitarios de la televisora local Univisión 14. El idioma para la comunidad asiática es crítico. Los materiales informativos no han sido traducidos a este i dioma y a esto se suma el conocimiento técnico para cualquier persona. Muchos no entienden los asuntos técnicos para instalar o cambiar las cajas convertidoras. El paso atrás El país tiene que estar preparado para este gran
paso puesto que no se trata de cambiar un televisor por otro sino que muchas personas con estos televisores con antena tienen la opción de poner un caja convertidora que le permitirá ver la programación televisiva. Aquellos que usan cable, satélite u otro servicio pagado no van a tener problemas. Otros sin embargo no dudarán en comprar un televisor nuevo y tratarán de deshacerse del viejo porque así lo sugiere la propia campaña de la transición digital. Allí no termina el problema. Lo complicado del asunto es que “El Planeta” va a estar afectado con los miles y miles de televisores que pasarán a ser basura electrónica. Según la Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition (SVTC) un promedio de 80 millones de televisores serán reciclados poniendo en peligro a los países como India y China que reciben la basura electrónica para ser reciclada. “Esto es un pro blema porque los televisores tienen materiales tóxicos como plomo y otros ele-

Condado ofrece clases en español para futuros padres de crianza y de adopción

erie Educativa Capacitará a Interesados en Cuidado Temporal o Permanente de Menores de Edad. Los días 3, 10, 17,24 y 31 de enero se realizarán estas clases en Asian Pacific Family Resource Center (Centro de Recursos Familiares) ubicado en 625 Wool Creek Dr. Suite F. San Jose, Ca. 95112 (408) 299-1566. En el Condado de Santa Clara hay cerca de 1,900 menores de edad que dependen del Condado. Más de 600 de ellos se benefician del cuidado de cri-
anza temporal, y muchos hogares de crianza son necesarios para atenderlos. AN JOSE, CALIF. - The County of Santa Clara and PG&E reached an agreement in which PG&E will provide $63,000 to the County’s Household Hazardous Waste Program to support its fluorescent lamp recycling efforts.

The funding will be used for public outreach and fluorescent lamp collection at the local retail partners. “The funding from PG&E will enhance the County’s ability to recruit more retailers to participate in the County’s Household Hazardous Waste Program and increase public awareness about fluorescent lamp recycling,” said Supervisor Liz Kniss, District 5. “Fluorescent lamps contain mercury and could pose serious health risks to the public if disposed of improperly. I encourage everyone to take their used fluorescent lamps to the participating retailers.” Over the past two years, the County’s Household Hazardous Waste program has been actively recruiting local retailers to participate in this endeavor. As a result,
35 retail recycling partners have joined the program. These retailers place recycling boxes in their stores for the residents to dispose of their used fluorescent lamps at the end of their useful life. When the boxes are full, HHW picks them up and sends them to a recycler. “PG&E’s agreement with the County of Santa Clara is a testament to our shared commitment to energy efficiency, environmental protection and leading by example,” said John Bohman, program manager of customer energy efficiency for PG&E. “PG&E customers in Santa Clara County will benefit from our contribution to the County’s Take It Back Partnership, and we hope that more counties will follow in the County of Santa Clara’s footsteps.”Δ

No-text Law Goes Into DMV Tells Drivers to Keep Their Eyes on the Road or Pay a Fine

acramento, Calif. - The California Department of Motor Vehicles would like to inform and remind drivers all over the state that in less than a month, they will no longer be able to legally text message while behind the wheel. On January 1, 2009, a new state law will go into effect; a law aimed to prevent text-messaging while driving and the collisions which could occur as a result. SB28 prohibits a person using an electronic wireless communications device to write, send or read text-based messages while operating a motor vehicle. This law specifically addresses, but is not limited to, instant messages and all forms of e-mail based correspondence. Similar to its no-cell phone counterpart, drivers are subject to $20 fee for the first offense, and $50 for each subsequent offense. However, unlike SB33 which focuses on teens and SB1613 which allows cell phone usage accompanied by a headset for adults, SB28 affects all drivers. No points will
be shown on DMV records for this violation, but penalty assessments will be added, which could more than triple the base fine amount. This law does not apply to any passengers in motor vehicles, or to emergency services professionals using an electronic wireless communication device while operating an authorized emergency vehicle. According to the Transport Research Laboratory, the reaction time of people driving while textmessaging is 35 percent slower, while reaction times were only 12 percent slower for drunk drivers and 21 percent slower for those who smoke marijuana. Looking away for one second is enough time for a cyclist or child to end up in front of your vehicle, or for another driver to quickly veer into your lane. l año inicia con buenas pers pectivas para el Presidente Obama, el trae el entusiasmo y el deseo de trabajar para devolver la paz y la prosperidad a esta gran nación. Aunque serán muchos los obstáculos que enfrentará, principalmente por la pro-

nunciada crisis financiera que tocara fondo el primer semestre del 2009. Lastimosamente seremos testigos del cierre de mas empresas ycompañías que dejaran de funcionar. El Presidente Obama encontrará un potente aliado comercial, nación que hará una gran inversión durante la segunda mitad del año. Las guerras en Irak y Afganistán llegarán a su epilogo. Existirán rumores de descontento en algunos sectores del país, sin embargo; la gran mayoría de ciudadanos tiene grandes esperanzas en que Obama ponga todo su talento en un plan de rescate financiero. Durante la primavera ocurrirán actos racistas violentos en contra de minorías étnicas y al mismo tiempo surgirá un nuevo enemigo que lanzara una afrenta en contra de Estados Unidos. El gobierno intentará un acercamiento con el gobierno de Cuba, pero los resultados no serán los esperados. Es probable
que ocurra un atentado contra el Presidente entre Marzo y Abril pero será desarticulado. En cuanto a inmigración, se hará una ordenanza que le ponga fin a las redadas que ocurren en centros de trabajo, y se dará marcha a un programa de legalización, pero este tomará un par de años en desa rrollarse. Uno de los secretarios del gabinete no podrá concluir con su ministerio y otro ocupara su lugar. El primer año del mandato de Obama, trae mucho trabajo y esfuerzo, será el 2009 un año sufrido en cuanto a la economía. Del 30 de octubre del año próximo en adelante se podrá comenzar a hablar del inicio de una nueva etapa. Las políticas de Obama enfrentarán bloqueos en el congreso y fuertes críticas por parte de los republicanos, aun así, él logrará levantar la economía y devolverá al país el sitio que le corresponde en el mudo, con un espíritu de lucha, unión y superación.
