A Very Poignant Moment By: Veronica Cabanayan, Notre Dame High School, Class of 2012 rom Jan. 17 to Jan. 21, I attended the Presidential Youth Inaugural Conference in Washington, D.C. I had a great time there, and I made new friends from all over the country. Although the days started for us at 6 a.m. and we didn’t get into bed until about 1 a.m., it was still a lot of fun. Each day, we went to the University of Maryland to listen to prominent keynote speakers such as Former Secretary of State and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Colin Powell and Vice President Al Gore.

On Sunday, we went to the National Mall to watch the Presidential Inaugural Opening Celebration, where some of the biggest names in entertainment spoke and performed.

On Inauguration Day, I witnessed the Inauguration from the middle of the National Mall. I had such a great time, even though it was 18 degrees and there were literally millions of people in attendance. There were so many people there that I couldn’t see the ground beneath my feet. It was fantastic, feeling the excitement, togetherness and patriotic energy emanating from everyone. Rev. Rick Warren delivered the opening invocation. With him, we all recited the Lord’s Prayer. I can’t say that I’ve ever said the Lord’s Prayer with so many people at one time in a single place.

The millions of voices simultaneously reciting this prayer mutedly thundered throughout the city. To me, this was a very poignant moment.

Everyone, including my group of new friends, was very moved by President Obama’s inaugural speech. He spoke about the crises that we now approach, including a war, a weakened economy, jobs and homes being lost, businesses closing, the high price of health care, and the irresponsible use of resources that threaten our planet. He recognized these problems, and said that although they will not be solved overnight, they will be met. He said that his election into office is the people’s choice for hope over fear and the choice of unity of purpose. He reaffirmed the greatness of the nation, and what our forebears had to endure and sacrifice in order to get our country to where it is.

What this inauguration means to me, as a young Mexican-American woman aspiring for a position of leadership, is that the doors

are really open. This does not mean that the obstacles for a minority are not there; it simply means that it is possible to get around those obstacles through hard work, perseverance, and learning to relate with other people of different cultures and backgrounds. President Obama has proven that the opportunity to achieve one’s dreams actually exists. So I must learn how to effectively use the resources around me, create alliances with influential people, and fight to be seen and heard. Never, ever give up for what is just and right. This election has shown all Americans that the people’s voice really does matter.

President Obama is a prime example of what a collective voice can do. He has shown us what we can do when we have a common purpose.Δ

Check Your Retirement Accounts

t’s a good thing, looking back with 20:20 vision, the American employee and Congress was intuitively against the effort by the former Bush Administration to ‘privatize’ the Social Security Administration and its entitlement programs. Can you imagine what the SSA would do if its funds were backed up by devalued stocks, bonds, and the many derivatives which the financial institutions devised as a method of making highly leveraged investments? In too many cases the current market value is 35 percent below what it was before the collapse of several financial institutions (Lehmann Brothers, banks and Wall Street).

Today another situation exists which needs your full examination. Any and all retirement accounts, especially your 401K-retirement account. Recently Congress suspended the required minimum distribution (RMD) for 2009. There is a real need to look at the current value of any 401K-retirement fund you were planning to rely upon during your golden years after retirement.

One individual, upon checking her 401K funds, was very shocked to learn that it had devalued by $50,000. As a consequence she had to defer retirement in order to rebuild the value of that 401K-retirement fund to a new balance that would yield $2,500 per month retirement income. Another person, who had already retired, sadly learned that his retirement funds were now at 50 percent

of their former value. These retirement funds no longer provided enough retirement monthly income. This projection required this individual to completely change his retirement plans. Unfortunately, this individual has no opportunity to rebuild the body of his retirement fund.

Congress has responded through recent legislation to rectify the negative impact of the current market’s severe downturn. It was and is unfair to require seniors, age 70.5 or older, to take RMD’s when the value of their retirement fund is down 35 percent or more. The RMD is based on the value during the prior year 2007. RMD’s were being taken from funds that had devalued 35 percent during 2008, which would further reduce the balance left in that particular retirement fund. Now retired individuals may defer their 2009 RMD withdrawal because it has been waived by recent federal legislation. Each individual case is unique so the only universal advice, which may be useful, is to check out any and all retirement funds to determine what their value may be today.

It is better to know than to remain uninformed. Today no one can afford blissful ignorance.

In the past many workers earned their company pension plans; however, today 67 percent of workers have 401K retirement plans and no company pension plan. This shift means that the company has less risk

and responsibility, while the individual assumed more risk and personal responsibility. According to a report in the New York Times the aggregated loss of value of many household retirement funds exceeded two trillion dollars. No one projects this recession bas bottomed out yet, so further loss of value is very possible.

This serious situation requires that Congress and President Obama make a comprehensive overview of all retirement plans and enact appropriate corrective policy.

Many will have to change their plans to retire and keep on working into their golden years.

Several good ideas must be incorporated into law and regulation in order to permit individuals to have more personal control and involvement. This would make it more difficult for some unethical and irresponsible corporate executives to siphon retirement escrow monies to other uses and shift the responsibility of making good on required retirement funds to the National Retirement Guarantee Fund, which we all contribute to as taxpayers.

Today it is wise to trust your retirement administrator, but check things out personally and do it sooner rather than later. Ultimately it is up to the individual to exercise personal responsibility and involvement. Δ

The New Year’s shot in the back by a BART police officer that killed 22-yearold Oscar Grant re- ignited judgments that some police seek any provocation to beat, arrest-even kill-marginalized youth and people of color.

“Too many cops are out-of-control cowboys inflicting street punishment on those they think need an attitude adjustment,” the words of a 23-year-old Latino studying to be a special ed teacher. He is just what our community needs: enthusiastic, educated young adults committed to educate the next generation of Americans. He related that he’s seen police behaving badly-cursing, threatening, beating, and arresting Latino youth and adults all his life. “I hate that I fear cops, but I have seen too much to trust themeven if I needed one, I wouldn’t call them.”

Our city manager, mayor and council, but especially Chief Davis: please note this statement from a young adult who any parent would be proud to call their son. He states he does not hate police officers, but believes them to be in his words, “armed thugs” rather than peace officers.

As a former gang prevention social worker, I worked with San Jose police all of my professional life. I regularly called on officers to investigate family violence, transport abused women and children to shelters, to co-lead workshops on gang violence. I attended training retreats with police officers, and after hours we drank beer and played pool at a country tavern. I have friends and family members in law enforcement. Police are the same as civilians, only more so. They can be well tempered, moral, kind-hearted, professional and sometimes great at de-escalating potentially violent situations. And like all of us, under stressful situations, police officers can react inappropriately.

However, unlike most of us, police are trained to knock down, restrain, and inflict great pain upon a person. With their weapons, they can break bones, crack skulls, rupture organs, taser and shoot to kill. Officers’ training and field manual prescribes when and how to use force. Supervision and appropriate consequences are critical to ensure force occurs only when necessary. Yet critical supervision is not always effective to ensure public safety under color of authority.

Command and Internal Affairs units have a disturbing record of protecting police officers. These problems are not endemic to San Jose. In 1995 twelve San Francisco officers beat, kicked, and pepper sprayed Aaron Williams, leaving him in a pool of blood, as he died 30 minutes later. Officer Marc Anaya’s boot print imprinted on Williams’ cheek. Anaya previously served in Oakland, where he shot a man nine times, reloading his weapon to shoot again. Some may recall Oakland’s infamous “Riders,” police who beat and framed (planting drugs) on dozens of African-American young men who flunked their “attitude test” of failing to show proper respect for them. Their training officer, Frank “Choker” Vasquez, lived up to his proud nickname. An FBI investigation forced the Riders’ prosecution, reversing 100 convictions, and a $10m civil settlement.

Oakland’s present Chief of Internal Affairs, Ed Poulson, was suspended last week after revelations that nine years ago, during the Riders’ reign of injustice, he beat a suspect, kicking him in the ribs. A month later, pneumonia caused by a collapsed lung pierced by broken ribs, led to death. Poulson ordered subordinate officers to lie about the beating. Some did, others reported the beating. Internal Affairs called for his firing, but he was only suspended for two weeks. When he was to be appointed Chief of Internal Affairs last year, officers with knowledge of the beating and his interference with that investigation warned the present chief, to no avail, so they alerted the FBI, which led to the suspension. This week the Oakland Police Chief announced his resignation.

Last week San Jose police officer Joseph Paolini tasered a woman outside a downtown club. When her husband came to her aid and/or to confront the officer, he shot him.

We cannot pre- judge the behavior of the woman, her husband or the officer. However, the expected pattern of human behavior is that any husband, family member, adult male would likely come to the aid of a woman being tasered. Certainly some inebriated individuals do behave badly, but must they be tasered or shot? Was anyone’s life in danger that a taser and a gun needed to be discharged? How do we hold our protectors accountable and responsible? Who can protect us from our protectors? Δ

AN JOSÉ, Calif. - The San José/Evergreen Community College District’s chapter of the Latina Leadership Network (LLN), in partnership with the Chicana/Latina Foundation, will be hosting a scholarship workshop at San José City College (SJCC) on Friday, January 30 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the Student Center, Room 202 (Community Room).

This interactive, hands-on presentation will help attendees, including students and their parents, learn to negotiate the sometimescomplicated scholarship process, from locating the scholarships to writing essays and attending interviews.

“The LLN hosted this event last spring and it was very well attended-standing room only,” says Cristina Marsh, LLN Region 1 representative. “The students and parents who attended gave very positive reviews and were certain to make good use of the information they acquired.”

“Our LLN chapter is one of the very best in the state as far as performing community outreach,” says Josie Gutiérrez, a founding member of the SJECCD LLN chapter. “Sometimes teachers and counselors are simply too busy to share all of the information students need to make good choices in applying for scholarships or financial aid. This workshop is a good first step for students already in college or high school seniors and their families who want to learn more about their options for funding their child’s postsecondary education.”

“I am proud that SJCC will be hosting this important workshop,” says SJCC President Dr. Michael Burke. “The students will come away with a wealth of information and will also discover how much SJCC has to offer them.”

ASSEMBLYMEMBER JIM BEALL JR. RECEIVES HONOR FOR IMPROVING FOSTER CARE

ssemblymember Beall, D-San Jose, was honored by the California Youth Connection for his work in helping foster care youth and raising awareness about foster care-related issues. He was recognized by the organization on Monday, Jan. 26, at the State Capitol building.

“This is a wonderful honor, especially because it is determined by the young people in CYC,’’ Beall said. “Together, we can work to help California’s foster care youth.’’

On the first day of the current session, Beall introduced Assembly Bill 12, legislation that would tap available federal funding to extend foster care in California beyond the age of 18 to 21. The bill is aimed at

solving the problems - such as higher incidences of homelessness, drug use, and incarceration — that can afflict foster care youth who are aged out of the system. There are about 74,000 children and youths in foster care and an estimated 4,500 are aged out annually.

The recognition of Beall’s work kicks off the “Day at the Capitol’’ rally sponsored by the California Youth Connection. The event is designed to focus attention on issues affecting foster care. California Youth Connection, founded in 1988, promotes the participation of foster youth in policy development and legislative changes to improve the system. Δ

an José, Calif. —- Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) mejorará 19 paradas de autobús y las aceras alrededor de las paradas para que los pasajeros tengan más seguridad. Para prepararse para las actividades de construcción, las paradas se trasladarán a lugares más seguros para abordar el autobús y permitir que los equipos de construcción completen el trabajo.

VTA se ha comunicado con los vecinos donde se llevará acabo las mejoras y pondrán letreros bi lingües para comunicar las fechas de construcción.

VTA planea mejorar las paradas con mejoras de concreto y diseño que ayuden abordar a los pasajeros con más facilidad. El trabajo incluirá poner cemento y durará aproximadamente más de un mes para completar todo el proyecto, sin embargo el trabajo en cada parada será menos de unos cuantos días, dependiendo de la cantidad de trabajo que se tenga que hacer. THACA, NY. (ConCienciaNews) - Científicos del departamento de toxicología de la universidad de Cornell en Nueva York encontraron una relación entre factores biológicos y medioambientales y el sistema inmune de los fetos, bebés y niños.

Según el estudio, dado a conocer esta semana por la American Chemical Society, ACS, estos factores tendrían un impacto negativo en la salud de los niños y aumentarían el riesgo de desarrollar enfermedades como el asma, autismo, diabetes, leucemia, entre otras.

Se trata de un campo de la ciencia conocido como inmunotoxicología del desarrollo, que identifica los factores medioambientales capaces de dañar el sistema inmunológico. Entre éstos se encuentran también el consumo de medicamentos, químicos, y el uso de ciertos dispositivos médicos.

“También incluyen que la madre del niño fume, exposición al tabaco proveniente del medioambiente, exposición a metales pesados como el plomo, mercurio y arsénico, contaminación del tráfico urbano y consumo de alcohol por parte de la madre”, dijo Rodney Dietert, líder del estudio.

La investigación, que se publicó en el Chemical

Research in Toxicology journal, examinó las enfermedades asociadas con la inmunotoxicología del desarrollo e hizo un llamado para una mayor concientización en la disfunción del sistema inmune antes de llegar a la edad adulta y sus consecuencias en el desarrollo de serias enfermedades crónicas.

A este respecto, Dietert dijo que la comunidad latina se halla especialmente en riesgo debido a la falta de acceso a servicios médicos y, en consecuencia, a cuidados prenatales durante la gestación y luego del parto.

Otros factores de riesgo incluyen el uso de medicamentos antiinflamatorios libres de esteroides, abuso de medicamentos antibióticos, exposición al humo de madera, exposición a herbicidas y ciertas infecciones que ocurren en la madre o en el feto durante la etapa de gestación.

f the police officers involved in the killing of Oscar Grant on New Year’s Day had known they’d be caught on video and later charged for their actions, they might have thought twice about their actions.

Now the Bay Area and various UC campuses throughout the state have come together in mass to ensure that justice is served.

“At one of our first rallies on Jan. 7, the police officer who shot Oscar Grant was not even facing charges,” exclaimed Ronald Cruz, Berkeley Law student and organizer with the Coalition to Defend Affirmative Action, Integration, and Immigrant Rights and Fight for Equality By Any

Means Necessary (BAMN), “it was clear that he was going to get away with it. We want to make sure that we get justice and convictions.”

Universities such as University of California Berkeley, Santa Barbara, Los Angeles, Riverside and Santa Cruz demanded during their protests that: * All the killer cops be jailed * End BART’s and District Attorney Orloff’s cover-up-open an inde-

pendent public investigation of the murder * Disarm the BART police, and keep the BART police out of Oakland * Drop all the charges against protesters “If there was no video, there would be a very different narrative,” said Raj Jayadev, Director at Silicon Valley De-Bug. “All we would have heard is that there was a struggle, a man attacked a police officer and the police officer had to shoot.

“The younger generation is very media savvy and police now know that they could be a youtube star for all the wrong reasons. That’s going to act as a monitoring system,” added Jayadev.

“The BART police carried out a concerted policy to brutalize the black and Latino youth on the platform and execute Oscar Grant. They are all guilty,” said Cruz.

The unity of those demanding justice in this trial will be at every court hearing, said Cruz.

“We’re drawing a line in the sand against racist police brutality and murder. The rallies are peaceful, but at the same time, no organization can con-

trol the rage of the people if justice is not met.”

Jayadev summed up the importance of this case by explaining, “I hope this tragedy, and the court proceedings, will mark a shift in the way police departments are held accountable and monitored because the danger, of course, is that every one of us is a potential Oscar Grant. Until the police realize that they are not above the law, we’re all in danger I think.

“At the time the country is talking about hope and change, yet we’re still seeing dead bodies of young men of color from what seems to be a blatant lack of concern by law enforcement.”

ideos, pruebas irrefutables condenan al oficial de seguridad del BART Johannes Mehserle quien disparó a Oscar Grant (22) la madrugada del Año Nuevo. Grant como se muestra en el video que ha dado la vuelta al mundo por You Tube estaba boca abajo tirado en el piso, desarmado y recibe un disparo por la espalda Estudiantes de la Universidad de Berkeley y escuelas secundarias de esta zona organizaron una marcha para expresar su enojo y demanda de justicia por el desaparecido joven Oscar Grant.

Los jóvenes demandaron que se encarcelen a todos los oficiales implicados en el incidente donde Grant perdió la vida. Los estudiantes piden desarmar la policía del Bart y mantener a la policía fuera de Oakland. La demanda incluye convocar una investigación pública e independiente en las

instalaciones del Bart y el retiro de cargos a todos los manifestantes arrestados.

“Cárcel si, no libertad bajo fianza” circulaban volantes entre todos los miembros de una comunidad organizada dispuesta a protestar. Johanes Mehserle tuvo audiencia el 30 de enero en Oakland.

El proceso lento por parte de las autoridades no está demostrando que los oficiales del BART estarán protegidos luego de cometer crímenes brutales. “A mí es a quien más le interesa yo creo, queremos hacer ahí un documento sobre Cuauhtémoc, sobre el futbol y lo

que significa para este país y la sociedad, y un poco la historia de Cuauhtémoc, ¨de dónde viene no?, como un reflejo”, explicó Luna. Agregó que “la historia de Cuauhtémoc es única y ya que la fui conociendo sí me interesó contarla, la verdad, pero no sé muy bien cómo se va a hacer, ni cuándo, ni quién, pero sí por lo menos queremos producirla”. Documental de Katrina nominado al Oscar

éxico, (Notimex).- El cineasta Carl Deal afirmó que si su documental “Agua turbia”, nominado al Oscar, gana ese premio, ayudaría a ampliar su misión que es mostrar los problemas sociales y políticos implícitos en su filme. En entrevista habló sobre la odisea que fue llevar a la pantalla el impacto provocado por el huracán Katrina en 2005, los hechos que conmovieron a Estados Unidos y pusieron en evidencia el sistema de Protección Civil de esa nación.

Apuntó que es un documental pequeño realizado por una empresa menor y probablemente no tendrá el impacto si hubiera sido realizado por uno de los grandes estudios; sin embargo, espera

que en su momento motive a la reflexión.

“La historia, coincidencia o casualidad, se dio a partir de la cobertura de los hechos de Nueva Orleáns con el huracán Katrina y fuimos comisionados Tia Lessin (la co-directora), y yo”, dijo Deal.

En una primera instancia Deal y Lessin estuvieron en esa zona para documentar la participación de las tropas en las labores de rescate, así como los estragos provocados por el huracán y encontraron de forma accidental a la pareja que los ayudó a completar cinematográficamente la tragedia. “Agua turbia” formará parte de la Sección Derechos Humanos del Festival Internacional de Cine Contemporáneo de la Ciudad de México, que se efectuará del 17 de

febrero al 1 de marzo en la capital mexicana. El filme relata la reacción tardía de las autoridades estadounidenses, así como la participación de las fuerzas armadas en el rescate de sobrevivientes.

Además, competirá el próximo 22 de febrero por el Oscar en la Categoría de Documental con “The Betrayal”, “Encounters at the End of the World”, “The garden” y “Man on wire”. Según las notas de prensa, describe el paso de Katrina con una óptica jamás vista.
