l Berliner Zeitung, diario alemán comentó que los salvadoreños “se decidieron ahora también por el camino de la izquierda”, en un país que desde hace varias generaciones sólo conoció dictadores militares de derechano ultraderecha y presidentes no menos conservadores.

Consideró que la derrota de la derechista Alianza Republicana Nacionalista (Arena) pone fin a una elite político-económica, pese a haber obtenido una alta votación de 49 por ciento.

l Departamento de la Policía de San José, (SJPD) fue cuestionado por el abuso de autoridad sobre los arrestos a latinos por supuestamente estar en estado de ebriedad mientras andaban en las calles. El 57?% de los arrestados son latinos, siendo este grupo un tercio de la población en San José.

El Alcalde de San Jose, Chuck Reed, Los Concejales Nora Campos y Sam Liccardo, la Administradora de la Ciudad, Debra Figone y el Jefe de la Policía de San José, Bob Davis anunciaron el comienzo de una gran investigación a cargo de un grupo independiente compuesto por académicos que van a revisar la conducta, procedimiento y prácticas policiales.

La agencia independiente se llama Consorcio de Equidad para Liderazgo Policial (CPLE siglas en inglés) el cual ofrecerá un análisis “independiente” sobre los últimos incidentes de la policía en la ciudad.

“Estamos pidiendo ayuda a CPLE para que analicen qué está pasando con los datos locales y también queremos averiguar cómo estamos ofreciendo nuestros servicios al público”, dijo Davis a EO.

Por su parte la Asociación de Libertades Civiles (ACLU) sostuvo que se pretende apaciguar un gran escándalo. ACLU ha pedido al SJPD tener acceso a los casos de arresto, pedido que fue negado por la institución policial.

“Esta acción sólo servirá para agrandar aún más la distancia entre la comunidad y la policía.

Hay falta de confianza y seguridad con el departamento polical”, dijo Raúl Conlunga, representante de la Raza Roundtable.

“La ciudad se negó a entregar los informes de detenciones del Grupo de Trabajo de Intoxicación Pública por considerarlo recursos de la ciudad sin embargo pueden ahora asignar fácilmente éstos a un consultor”, agregó Colunga.

ACLU, La Raza Roundtable, La Raza Lawyers Association, Latino Democratic Forum consideran que esta movida de la ciudad crea más cuestionamientos sobre la transparencia de las prácticas policiales.

El jefe de la policía de San José defendió a sus institución diciendo: “No podemos mejorar sin la intervención objetiva de alguna institución de fuera. Somos una institución cuya reputación es progresiva, innovadora y las puertas están abiertas para mejorar si lo tenemos que hacer. t is obvious now that access to necessary training and education is imperiled. After the State Assembly and governor endorsed the California State Budget 09/10, which still requires voter action this coming May 19th, all elements of the educational system were sources of comments letting their constituents know that instructional capacity would be curtailed and layoff notices would be required.

ESUHSD School Board considered severe cutbacks of their sports program; San Jose Evergreen Community College District made public their lack of capacity to matriculate all who qualified; the California State University System informed that 4,500 qualified first year students (freshman class) would not be able to matriculate this coming Fall ‘09. All this at a time when the Department of Corrections’ budget was not impacted as significantly as that pertaining to our educational institutions.

The focus of many efforts was on how to get more money budgeted to education, rather than considering ‘How can we do more with what we have?’ Until the body politic puts pressure on its elected school board members to inquire about how to provide the most education possible with what is at hand today, no significant changes will be considered and implemented.

For example, the CSU system could consider the extended use of information technology to provide coursework online which would permit the best educators to present course content to an extended audience of students. Those enrolled in online courses could download the content at home, do their studying, and be tested to determine levels of understanding prior to going onto the next course. Certain kinds

of knowledge can be transferred to a student using online technology. Are the professional teacher’s unions cooperating?

Would it be possible for SJSU to matriculate all students qualified if online courses were offered? Are the faculty and staff being asked to expand their ability to instruct a larger number of students using the latest instructional- technology?

Can you imagine the ESUHSD Board Chair Patricia Martinez Roach asking Superintendent Robert Nuñez the following question: “What can be done with information technology that is permissible under the current California State Education Code that would permit our teachers and staff to expand their instructional efficiency and effectiveness?” The state education code already permits the use of IT. Why is it not implemented to the fullest extent possible?

One reason is that the current California Teachers Association (CTA-a professional teacher’s union) sets the class size to 25 students (upper limit) which when exceeded requires the employment of an additional teacher. The use of IT to increase instructional capacity of a single teacher means that CTA would have fewer members. It is against the self interest of CTA to increase effective instructional outreach and capacity.

Educational organizations and institutions are slow to accept changes because of their conservative nature. Why confront the CTA union officials when things are working well enough? The near term challenge is that educational organizations will need 300,000 new teachers to replace those who will retire within the next five years.

What is being done about this?

The reality is that our economy will not provide sufficient tax revenues to expand the current instructional system un-

less innovation and technology are permitted to develop enhanced instructional capacity. Our economy now requires larger numbers of highly trained individuals in the future work force (which will be mainly Latino in ethnic heritage).

The Hispanic community must understand that it is necessary for their children to become computer literate so as to enable kids to study courses online at home. The ethnic group which has adopted the slowest to this technology happens to be the Hispanic community according to Rosa G. Perez, Chancellor of SJECCD. How are Hispanic individuals, especially our youth, going to learn to be the skilled, capable and reliable technologists and scientists needed by the All GreenClean Air industries being developed today in Silicon Valley? It is essential that our educational leaders and elected school board members begin to challenge their educational institutions to become more effective and efficient in their instructional capacities. And it is time that Hispanic youth seriously address the rigors required by science and technology if they want to have middle-class incomes in their future.

If our American nation is to remain pre-eminent in the current global economy, it is necessary for all levels of our educational system to adopt changes which increase instructional effectiveness. It is not the amount of money which determines the effectiveness of an instructional process, it is the willingness to adopt innovation and creativity while letting go of outdated information and methods.

Traditional education organizations and their leaders must be asked by our Hispanic community to do more with what they now have. Lack of appropriate levels of funding must not be permitted to imperil access to education and training.Δ

By Gil Villagrán, MSW s our nation slides further into bankruptcies of Wall Street, banks, retirement trusts, massive corporations, mom and pop storefronts on main street, workers are laid off, and families evicted, it is high time to say: BASTA! ENOUGH! But to whom can we shout our outrage? Wall Street?

CEOs in their mansions? Corporate boards? Stockbrokers? Federal bureaucrats? Congress? The President?

There is much guilt to go around; but as a nation of laws, our economic debacle begins and ends on the steps of the Capitol and White House. As Wall Street financial wizards created evermore complex “financial paper” (derivatives, credit default swaps, and other esoteric investment instruments) Treasury regulators had the responsibility to protect the public from fraud. Washington is where the debacle was born with the passage of laws to de-regulate the financial industry. Congress took campaign funds, junkets, and all manner of “legal bribes” from banking lobbyists to decrease or eliminate regulation as well as taxes on capital gains—investment profits that are untaxed or taxed at lower rates than actual labor.

An orgy of de-regulation took off in a serious manner as part of the “Reagan Revolution” to “get government off the back of America’s entrepreneurs,” perennially claimed as creators of wealth, dismissing the sweat of 200 million Americans in factories, farms, offices, hospitals and stores, who keep the nation running. Republicans led the charge to eliminate constraints on financial transactions, and Democrats, not be left behind, joined in the hysterical call to “let free enterprise reign supreme” with Congressional majorities enchanted by the false god called “the market,” promising to make us all rich!

But we did not all get rich, though many did, especially on Wall Street in New York and K Street in Washington (where lobbyists have their offices). Some got so rich with de-regulation that millionaires became billionaires, and more than a few Congressmen left office to lobby their cronies, also becoming millionaires in the process. Any elected official who is not super wealthy is considered super stupid by the ownership ruling class.

Bush-the-First infamously ridiculed candidate Reagan’s trickledown supply side scheme to lower taxes (on the rich) in order to increase federal revenue, “voodoo economics.” But he quickly drank the voodoo kool aide to become Reagan’s vice-president, next in line for the presidency. Then came Clinton, speaking like a man of the people, while further eroding regulation as he accepted massive funds from lobbyists, even from foreign contributors to his presidential library. Bush-the-Second (and hopefully the last!), totally beholden to the “Kenny boy” (CEO of Enron, Ken Lay) class of ignoble scam artists, gave financial manipulators whatever de-regulation they wanted, joined by a chorus of pundits, financial advisors, and patrician Yale-Harvard MBAs rabidly foaming at the mouth for multi-millions in commissions, stock options and bonuses.

Then, just as Bush-the-Second was making his get-away after eight years of acting like a president, but not quite surpassing his Cmediocrity, the Wall Street meltdown came tumbling down, ironically similar in a fiscal manner to the fall of the World Trade Center Towers: they were there, then imploded.

And so Wall Street, just around the corner from the Twin Towers, with trillions in value, imploded, and all that wealth vanished!

The Great Debacle of Wall Street and Washington, twin towers of power and greed, massively sold out and failed the nation.

Is the debacle criminal fraud or criminal ignorance? Combined: fraud (cheating), and ignorance (ignoring the obvious—that regulation is necessary to operate a national and global economy), are a toxic combination. Certainly resignations are in order for the ignorant Congressmen and women who passed de-regulation laws, and criminal prosecutions are mandated for those who took questionable and illegal bribes from lobbyists. We must cleanse our government and financial industry of toxic individuals who all but destroyed our national economy. Δ

of the San Jose Police Department for “A job well done.”

MC Bud LoMonaco introduced Chief of Police Robert L. Davis, who informed the audience present that the City of San Jose has a smaller police force than many cities of comparable size. In addition, many federal statutes re-

quired mandated police enforcement, so he encouraged citizens to have the Mayor and Councilmembers remind our representatives in Congress to allocate funds to pay for these mandated police services. the community for helping SJPD maintain community safety. Groups such as Kiwanis and Crime Stoppers are essential SJPD Captain Ernesto Alcantar spoke next. He described the many issues which police face in that East Side Community police district. These 18 officers being recognized and honored today were all involved in the surveillance, evidence gathering, and shutting down of a ‘drug house’ which was only blocks away from a local high school and elementary school. Thousands of meth pills and $40,000 in cash were part of the contraband confiscated and all those involved arrested for dealing in drug traffic.

any throughout the U.S. have lost their jobs due to the current economic recession. At Cisco Systems, the janitorial workforce has been cut by over fifty percent, according to the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 1877. The massive lay off has resulted in approximately 75 families losing their main source of income. On March 12, janitors and their supporters protested and demanded that the laid off workers be brought back to work.

“We want workers to return because the quality of these services will not be the same with less people,” said Dennis Solis, Bay Area janitorial director for the Service Employees International Union Local 1877.

Maria G. Lopez, a janitor at Cisco, said the workload has become more than most could handle since the layoffs.

“Before, three janitors would clean a four story building,” Lopez said. “Now only two janitors clean a four story building.

The work is too much for anyone to handle.”

The workers who have remained have also reported an increased risk to their health and safety. According to the Service Employees International Union Local 1877, the janitors were told to clean bathrooms without soap or other supplies. Each toilet seat carries over 100 rotavirus, fecal coli forms and parasite germs per inch and release a six-foot plume

of bacteria when flushed.

Cisco does not directly hire people for janitorial services. The janitors are employed by American Building Maintenance, which provides janitorial services for Cisco Systems.

In a statement released by Cisco Systems, “The company greatly sympathizes with union members who have been impacted by the current economic uncertainty. While these individuals are not directly employed by Cisco, we have worked closely with our janitorial service provider to ensure that impacted workers are treated fairly and that the number of workers impacted is minimized as much as possible.”

However, the Services Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 1877 does not believe the current economic recession has effected Cisco the way it has other companies. According to the union, Cisco Systems has faced only minimal layoff of their own employees. It has $29 billion cash on hand and CEO John Chambers has publicly stated that the company will emerge from the current recession in a stronger position than ever.

“Look around! Cisco hasn’t closed any buildings,” said Maria G. Lopez. “In fact, Cisco is actually expanding.”

Janitors and union officials vow to keep fighting until the recently laid off workers were rehired, and Cisco will “continue to work closely with union officials to ensure that any demonstrations are conducted lawfully.”

A María le devolvieron la vida

A

Maria Lazo Cuzco (33) se le hizo el milagro de su vida. Luego de haber rogado a todos los santos y haberse encomendado a Dios, ella volvió a nacer. La historia de Maria es como haberse sacado la lotería.

Lazo Cuzco es natural de Guayaquil, Ecuador y ella fue sometida en febrero a una cirugía de reemplazo de las dos válvulas del corazón en el Hospital O’Connor en la ciudad de San José.

Esto fue posible gracias al programa denominado “Regalo de vida a un paciente” a cargo del Rotary Club de San José. Un vez más los miembros del Rotary Club unieron esfuerzos para regalarle lo más preciado que la vida pueda dar, la salud.

Lazo Cusco en los últimos tres años había dejado de trabajar y no podía vivir con normalidad debido a su problema de válvula cardiovascular.

Ella tenía obstrucciones en las dos válvulas del corazón, lo que le impedía llevar una vida normal.

Este mal congénito nunca fue tratado debido a la falta de recursos económicos.

Cuando fue detectada con este mal, ella se informó del costo de un examen. Pero cuando supo lo que tenía que pagar le dijo a su madre que era mejor que se muriera porque no quería endeudar a la familia.

“Mi madre me dio esperanzas y me dijo que en esta vida todo se puede. Mi familia organizó eventos para recaudar dinero y logré hacerme las pruebas que el médico de mi pueblo me recomendó. Cuando detectaron que este mal estaba muy complicado y luego me dieron los resultados además de las listas y los costos de una cirugía, decidí no avanzar porque ya mi familia había recaudado $700 para salvarme pero ya no había más dinero”, dijo la joven madre de tres hijos.

“Lo único que se me vino a la mente era buscar a un sacerdote a quien yo le vendía fruta y sabía que tenía una fundación para ayudar a pacientes enfermos del corazón y cuando lo fui a buscar ya había fallecido pero uno de sus asistentes recordó los buenos comentarios del sacerdote sobre ella y le facilitaron información para pedir ayuda a una fundación que opera a pacientes con males al corazón.

Lazo contactó a la fundación y ésta al Rotary Club quienes corrieron con los gastos de hospedaje, cirugía y tratamiento médico. La operación quirúrgica estuvo a cargo del Dr. Henry Fee. Afortunadamente María respondió positivamente a la operación y la sonrisa nuevamente se le dibujó en su rostro.

“He vuelto a nacer, siento como si me hubieran puesto un reloj en mi corazón. Ahora puedo respirar y vivir con normalidad”, dijo entre lágrimas María Lazo Cuzco.

Lazo Cuzco regresó a Ecuador con esperanzas, fe y muchas ganas de trabajar y por su puesto también de vivir. Poco a poco las marcas de sufrimiento se irán desvaneciendo gracias a la oportuna ayuda de Rotary Club de San José. Δ

Advocacy Groups Promote Benefits of Citizenship

By Osvaldo Castillo El Observador anta Clara County is made up of a wide variety of individuals who share their cultures as well as their love for the U.S. with each other. They also shared the ideal of becoming naturalized citizens.

“It is important to encourage the community to apply for citizenship,” said Basil Robledo, director of programs for the Services, Immigrant Rights and Education Network (SIREN). “There are many benefits for those who become naturalized citizens.”

The Services, Immigrant Rights and Education Network, along with the Asian Law Alliance, Sacred Heart Community Services and Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County will be present at the 20th Annual Citizenship Day and Immigrant Pride Day to discusses the benefits with eligible residents. The event will be held at the Center for Employment Training (CET) in San Jose on Saturday March 21st beginning at 9 a.m. A similar event will also be held in Gilroy the same day at 10 a.m. The services will be offered in many languages including English, Spanish, Vietnamese, Mandarin and Russian, and will offer residents free information on how to become a citizen, how to set up an appointment for other services such as application assistance, referrals to ESL and citizenship classes, and handouts of revised test questions.

The advocacy groups also believe the residents of Santa Clara County should be educated in the im-

portance of voting. According to Grantmakers Concerned with Immigrants and Refugees, 185,854 naturalized immigrants voted in the November election in Santa Clara County. Today, there are 190,000 residents who are eligible to naturalize in Santa Clara county and thus, be able to vote.

“You cannot have your freedom if you do not vote,” said community member Calvin Nguyen. “People are making decisions that affect your life without you having a say in it.”

Financial aid for the citizenship application will also be available through the “Save for Citizenship.”

Program. In 1990, the application fee was 90 dollars.

Today, the fee is $ 675. The program puts two dollars into a citizenship fund for everyone dollar that qualified residents put into the fund.

“The candidates need to reach a total of $220 in four month to receive the rest of the money needed to apply for citizenship,” Anti-immigrant sentiment is growing in the U.S., according to the advocacy groups. Thus, it is even more important now for eligible residents to become citizens.

“Many times, people believe that immigrants just come to this country to take and not give,” said Samina Sundas of the American Muslim Voice organization. “They don’t consider the culture, language, food and arts that make us a richer society.”

Former Female Inmates Climb LADDER

L

ife is not simple for most people.

Some of the obstacles it presents us can be difficult and unpredictable.

Failure to over come these obstacles can send some individuals on the wrong track in life.

Fortunately, we live in a society that believes that most people should be given a second chance to set things right. For eight former female inmates at the Elmwood Correctional Complex in Milpitas, that second chance was the LADDER program.

“The program is about providing good work that can lead to self sufficiency,” said Esther Peralez-Dieckmann, Director of the Office of Women’s Policy. “We wanted to make a difference in these women’s lives.”

According to Peralez-Dieckmann, women are being arrested at a faster rate than before.

“We wanted to find a way to end this cycle,” Peralez-Dieckmann said. “Most of these

girls are non-violent offenders with a lot of potential.”

The program was initiated by the County of Santa Clara Office of Women’s Policy, Habitat for Humanity Silicon Valley, the Santa Clara Department of Correction, the Commission on the Status of Women and other organizations.

The LADDER project facilitates the transition of qualified former female inmates into opportunities in construction, a field traditionally occupied by men.

“The women learn that they can do the jobs that men do,” Peralez-Dieckmann said.

The women worked with Habitat for Humanity Silicon Valley, building homes and learning about teamwork.

Pacita Banks is one of the former inmates that graduated from the LADDER program.

“I saw a flyer for the program and was curious about it,” Banks said. “I believe I was picked for the program because the people at Elmwood knew that I was a hard worker and that I was eager to learn.”

Banks, who is from Oakland, had to travel

Banks said she is ready to see what opportunities are out there for her now that she has acquired her new skills. She also wants to continue working on the project she was working on for Habitat for Humanity.

Cutting Higher Education Harms Everyone

Students from San Jose City College and Evergreen Valley Community College plus others throughout California woke up as early as 5 am to get onto buses and arrive on time to the Capital of California. With 11 billion dollars in proposed cuts through June 30, 2010, around 10 thousand students marched to demand continued state support for higher education.

Lieutenant Governor John Garamendi, a University of California regent and California State University trustee, joined thousands of community college, CSU, and UC students during the California Community Colleges’ “March in March: Rescue Education”, calling on lawmakers to recognize the importance of California’s continued investment in higher education and job retraining.

“We cannot slam the door on higher education, particularly at the community colleges where everything from nursing to preschool education to retraining Californians who have lost their jobs takes place,” Lieutenant Governor John Garamendi said.

“We need to keep the doors of education opportunity open for all.”

California Community Colleges are the state’s largest workforce training provider, serving 2.7 million students and conferring more than 125,000 degrees and certificates in more than 175 degree and certificate programs. According to the 2008 Accountability Report for the Community Colleges, students who received a degree or certificate from a California community college in 2000-01 saw a 61 percent increase in their wages three years after earning their degree.

Impact on Latinos The educational stakes are high for the Latino community. ”About 70% of Latinos nationwide are in community colleges,” said Rosa Perez, Chancellor of the San Jose/Evergreen Community College District. In California, there is no doubt that Latinos begin their higher education in community colleges. Additionally, the largest youth population in K-12 schools is Latino, reaching levels of over 50% in elementary school. Investing in college education that is culturally supportive of Latinos is a social and economic necessity for our State and our country.”

Every dollar spent on higher education equates to $3 in new revenue for the state, and nearly three-quarters of the 377,000 degrees conferred in 2007 were at public colleges and universities in the state. It is estimated that if an additional two percent of Californians had associate’s degrees and another one percent earned bachelor’s degrees, this could equate to the creation of 174,000 new jobs, a $20 billion boost to California’s economy, and a $1.2 billion annual increase in local tax revenues.

“With the state facing a 10.1 percent unemployment rate, the worst in over a quarter century, California’s community colleges are one of the state’s most effective outlets available for career advancement and job retraining,”said Garamendi.

ran las cinco y treinta de la mañana cuando cientos de estudiantes de los Colegios Comunitarios de San José y Evergreen se subían a los autobuses con destino a la capital de California. Un promedio de 10 mil estudiantes provenientes de los 114 Colegios Comunitarios de California protestaron frente a las escalinatas del Capitolio en Sacramento el pasado 16 de marzo, entre ellos maestros, cancilleres y directivos de estos centros educativos superiores.

“No podemos azotar la puerta a la educación superior, en especial a los 114 Colegios Comunitarios de este estado”, dijo el vicegobernador, John Garamendi.

Un duro golpe tiene que enfrentar el sector e ducativo en California. Desde hace una semana maestros vienen protestando debido a los recortes presupuestales a la que California ha sido sometida. El recorte presupuestal del gobierno estatal está despidiendo a 26 mil maestros y a su vez está limitando el cupo a colegios y universidades.

Esto ha creado una gran controversia y por esto los estudiantes salieron a protestar porque la educación no tiene que ser dañada.

Garamendi pidió públicamente en esta ma nifestación estudiantl abstenerse a recortar el presupuesto educativo y dio un apoyo contundente a todos los estudiantes quienes concluyen sus estudios con ayuda del estado pero ante estos drásticos recortes las posiblidades son pocas.

“No tiene sentido, esto es contraproducente para el estado. En el año 2007 se graduaron 377 mil personas en todos los sistemas de educación media y superior en California, lo que equivale a 174 mil nuevos empleos o 20 mil millones de dólares de los que mil 200 millones de dólares son impuestos que llegan al estado.

Las colegiaturas para educación superior en California han aumentado en promedio en un 61 por ciento en lo que va de esta década, y la década anterior se incrementaron aproximadamente esa misma cantidad.

Garamendi sostuvo que “por cada dólar que se invierte en educación en California, hay un equivalente a tres dólares de ingresos para el estado”.

“Aproximadamente el 70% de los latinos a nivel nacional están en nuestras instituciones. No cabe duda que en California los latinos comienzan sus estudios superiores con nuestros colegios de

la comunidad. Además, la mayoría de la población de jóvenes en las escuelas K-12 es latina y más del 50% en la escuela primaria. Invertir en la educación universitaria, culturalmente un gran apoyo para los latinos es a la vez una necesidad social y económica de nuestroe estado y nuestro país “, dijo la Canciller del Distrito de los Colegios de la Comunidad, Rosa Perez.

Sobrepoblación en Colegios Comunitarios Debido a los reducciones presupuestales a las cuales han sido sometidas los dos sistemas de universidades públicas, el número de ingreso a estudiantes ha sido reducido para evitar el aumento de colegiaturas. Ante este marco deprimente los Colegios Comunitarios serían la única opción para recibir a aquellos estudiantes que queden fuera.

Sin embargo los Colegios Comunitarios también están afectados por los recortes a su presupuesto.

Los Colegios Comunitarios forman parte de una opción que tienen las familias trabajadoras puesto que es una educación superior accesible para ellos.

La legislatura decidió reducir el presupuesto educativo para aliviar un déficit de casi 43 mil mi llones de dólares para los siguientes 15 meses, hasta junio de 2010.

He recently competed at the SkillsUSA Regional Competition, held in late January through February in San Jose, Hayward and Salinas.

“I had to do a demo on a parallel circuit,” Elizando said. “I had to wire six light bulbs to the circuit and be able to turn them on with a switch.”

Elizando is one of 37 students who competed at SkillsUSA, a national organization for career-technical education students within trade, technical, industrial and

health occupations. Other Gold Medal winners include Jeffrey Leong, Justin Riley, Ryan Foster, Victor Castillo, Daniel Rivera and Robert D’onofrio Jr. Sliver medal winners include Derek Dellinger, Veronica Bauer and Logan Hernlund.

They competed in the areas of Heating and Air Conditioning, Job Interviewing, Job Skill Demonstration, Computer Technology, Carpentry, Welding, Intro to Auto, Collision Repair and Auto Refinishing.

Despite their success at the SkillsUSA regional competition, many of the students were surprised at what they achieved. They all also believe they will do well at the state competition, which will be held in Fresno, April 2326.

The Central County Occupational Center is a unit of Metropolitan Education District and provides career-technical education for high school student in six districts: Campbell Union High School District, East Side Union High School District Los Gatos-Saratoga Joint Union High School District, Milpitas Unified School District, San Jose Unified School District and Santa Clara Unified School District. Students attend the center for half of their school day and the other half they attend at their home high school.

“The students can talk to their counselors to sign up for CCOC and can attend in their junior, senior or both years,” said Michelle Alaimo, communication specialist for the Metropolitan Education District. “The learning here is hands on and not all lecture. They work in a business like atmosphere and get to see the results.”

The Pan American Round Table of Los Gatos-Saratoga was funded in 1958 and chartered by the Alliance of PART in 1960. Since then, we have been offering scholarships to local high schools and within the last 10 years we have been offering scholarships to students at West Valley College and been Evergreen Community College.

We give financial support to Interplast and the Flying Doctors, two medical groups that provide medical services to indigent children of the Americas.

We respond readily to the support of victims of natural disasters, such as fires, hurricanes, earthquakes, etc., and we donate canned goods to the Food Bank.
