Fun ways to forge a love of nature and recycling in kids

(ARA) ature offers many beautiful gifts and wonders to explore, and parents can help get kids outside to discover them when they step away from the television or computer screen. Here are a few fun ways to encourage your children to explore nature. A growing trend As more Americans are discovering every year, gardening is a great way to enjoy nature. Kids will enjoy starting plants from seed or picking out starter plants at the nursery and watching them grow and develop. Even a small container garden on a balcony or patio can yield tomatoes for salsa, flowers for an entire season or strawberries galore. Cook up your favorite recipes with home grown ingredients and donate any excess produce to local food banks. For the more adventurous gardener, help your kids plant a

"vertical garden." In the style of famed French artist and botanist Patrick Blanc, grow your flowers and vegetables in a fun new way. Try filling a canvas hanging shoe organizer with a lightweight potting mix and filling each pocket with one of your favorite plants. Have fun using tomatoes, bell peppers, marigolds, strawberries, vinca vines or impatiens. Poke a drainage hole in each pocket and hang the entire organizer on your back fence or balcony. Water daily, and in just a few weeks you will be enjoying your own living art piece. Find a local community garden or gardening co-op and volunteer with your family to help with weeding, watering, planting or harvesting. Nature's bounty Yard waste? Not when you can re-use and repurpose. Find the beauty in what nature provides by creating new uses for

things that would otherwise be considered waste. Large sticks make great garden stakes for plants that need a little extra support, like tomatoes. Smaller sticks can be written on or carved into (by an adult) for an inexpensive way to label plants in the garden or pots. How about using leaves for gift tags or place cards? Kids will love writing names on the leaves with a little paint and a fine-tipped brush or metallic pen. Then, simply punch a hole in one end and tie with a decorative piece of raffia or ribbon for a personalized touch to any gift or place setting. Flowers from your pots or garden don't have to fade away - they can be easily dried for use in homemade potpourri, candles or soap. Give a worm a job Many of us know that composting is a great way to reuse what Mother Nature has given us. Even a small compost bin

will fill up quickly with kitchen scraps and yard waste. This waste can be used to produce a nice compost mix for next year's garden - especially if you add some red worms to the compost bin. Worms are nature's little composters. They make composting more fun, interesting and efficient by breaking down organic matter into nutrient-rich vermicast allowing your family to compost kitchen scraps easily, and reduce the amount of garbage produced each year. Red worms can be purchased inexpensively from many garden centers or online outlets. A small bin will require about 2 pounds of red worms to get the job done. The art of recycling Recycling is a great way to reduce waste. It's likely you already have a recycling bin next to the garbage can. Chances are, however, that your kids do not see those recyclables as art - it is time to change their minds. Reusing and recycling everyday objects not only reduces waste but, with a little imagination, can

also provide hours of creative fun. Make something together that will bring years of enjoyment to your home or landscape. Make a bottle tree to enhance the garden or balcony. Since the invention of bottles, people have found ways to use them as decorations. Used as a way to explore the beauty of glass or ward off (or attract) spirits, bottle trees have been "planted" across the planet in various forms for thousands of years. To build your own bottle tree, collect colorful glass bottles from your recycling bin or from friends, family or even local restaurants. For a "tree" form, use steel re-bar, sturdy wire, wood, fallen limbs or dying trees. Simply remove labels from bottles and wash out. Then, hang the bottles from your form - use your bottle tree purely as a decoration or as a nice support for vine-like plants such as morning glory or tomatoes. Preserving nature in photos A digital camera may not

seem like a device to get your kids outside, but they can be acquired quite inexpensively and are a great tool with which to view nature and animals. Go on walks in the yard, neighborhood, a local park or zoo and click away. Zoom in or change the angle of the camera for new perspectives. By simply changing the way that we look at things like flowers, animals, trees and even bugs, cameras provide an up-close and personal view of the world that you would not otherwise get to see. Use your photos for great screen savers on the computer, make photo collages or print them out for uniquely fantastic artworks to frame. Any way you use them, you will have preserved a little piece of nature and will have great memories for years to come. Once you and your kids start exploring nature together, you will discover hours of fun for the entire family. Mother Nature may have more to offer than you realized.

an José enfrenta un déficit de $ 105 millones, que es sólo ligeramente inferior al déficit récord del año pasado. El año pasado, muchos sindicatos dieron concesiones significativas, y la ciudad ha eliminado importantes servicios y ha reducido el personal, dejando ahora poco por recortar. Esto nos deja con un gran reto: solucionar la crisis fiscal sin dejar de ofrecer la calidad de los servicios que nuestros residentes se merecen. Contrariamente a la creencia común, la causa del déficit no es una compensación excesiva de la fuerza laboral de la ciudad. No cometer ningún error sería un cambio significativo en el sistema de pensiones. Pero los empleados de la ciudad han sido injustamente culpados por la crisis. Cuando la mayoría de los contratos se acordaron con los sindicatos muchos años atrás, la economía era próspera y San José estaba perdiendo los trabajadores al sector privado. Sin la posibilidad de ofrecer salarios más altos, la ciudad tuvo que ofrecer mejores prestaciones para competir con los empresarios privados. Cuando Wall Street se derrumbó, los planes de la jubilación de los empleados fueron diezmados. Como resultado, nos enfrentamos a terribles decisiones. ¿Cortaremos el servicio de alumbrado público de noche o recortaremos a los guardianes de las escuelas? Recortaremos a los programas de lucha contra las pandillas o cerraremos bibliotecas? Aún se debate la eliminación de cientos de agentes de policía, que nos vuelvan a los niveles de dotación de personal que tuvo durante los años 80, cuando la ciudad tenía menos habitantes de un tercio de lo que hace hoy en día cuentan. his past Tuesday, March 29, 2011, the Board of Supervisors, County of Santa Clara debated Item 44: Consider recommendations relating to reorganization of the Santa Clara Valley Health and Hospital Systems.” This was placed there by County Executive Jeffrey V. Smith. With every resident of the County of Santa Clara being a very interested stakeholder, can you imagine placement of an agenda item such as this without a prior public hearing? The entire community must become fully aware of the recent developments which will impact the current operations of its Health and Hospital System. This is the public health care system owned and operated by the County of Santa Clara. Its registered voters elects its Board of Supervisors responsible for establishment of its support, operations and public policy. Jeffrey V. Smith, M.D., Esq., County Executive, has had over a year to appointed a Chief Executive Officer, Santa Clara Valley Medical Center. Deputy County Executive Sylvia Gallegos was assigned as the ‘interim CEO’ who reported directly to Dr. Smith. Does Dr. Smith really think he can be both CEO of SCVMC while retaining his present position of County Executive? Both positions require very demanding stewardship and extensive knowledge. One or the other organization will suffer from not having a full time dedicated executive manager accountable to the Board of Supervisors..

There needs to be no doubt in anyone’s mind that the Health and Hospital System needs a full time executive manager who is not only capable of administering SCVMC, but also able to deal with the many changes that are in the “Affordable Health Care Act 2010” (federal legislation) being implemented now. Just last week this “ObamaCare” federal legislation celebrated its one-year anniversary since becoming the law of the land. Health care reform on a national scale is upon us now. This county would be well served to have a full time qualified executive manager at the helm of the Health and Hospital System to ensure that full participation in federal funded programs is realized. Today all mental health is included in these federal funded programs. construction. SCVMC, as a public hospital, operates the best Burn Center, Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Unit, Pediatric Care Center, Neonatal ICU, Trauma Center, and Emergency Room. In addition, several community clinics are located in neighborhoods being served. This health care system is complex and yet simple in that it delivers health care to the uninsured, the indigent, and several specialty services. It must be prepared to take full advantage of the provisions and goals of the ‘ObamaCare’ federal legislation. The jobs that result cannot be sent ‘offshore’. Today SCVMC and Stanford Medical Center are the two top hospitals in this county (U.S. News and World Report). And Santa Clara County ranks as one of the healthiest California counties for the second consecutive year (University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation). And SCVMC is a teaching hospital for all sorts of medical personnel. Supervisor Dave Cortese, President of the Board of Supervisors, stated. “It is important that the public understands how the county, and specifically the public hospital system, operates. Valley Medical Center is one of the top public hospitals in the nation and has the only Burn Trauma Center in Northern California. I look forward to the public study session in April to discuss the future plans for the Health and Hospital System so that residents can provide input. This will bring much greater transparency to the public policy decisions we are making.” Vice President Supervisor Shirakawa said, “I called for the Board of Supervisors to hold a public study session on the proposed reorganization of the County’s health and hospital system before moving forward. The changes that the Board has supported in the last couple of years have benefitted the County’s most vulnerable clients. For example, by moving the Public Health and Mental Health Departments out of the system, we have protected it from further budget cuts. I do believe that the public and the Board need to learn more at the upcoming Study Session.” After some debate, the Board of Supervisors referred this matter to the Health & Hospital Committee, Supervisor Liz Kniss, Chair. or the last several decades there has been the wringing of hands, by school teachers, administrators, parents and the general public, as to how to stem the tide of Latino high school students dropping out of public schools. Often, students simply dropout due to poor academic performance and/or boredom. Many enroll in kindergarten and as the years pass, fewer and fewer advance to the next level. It is recognized that there are a number of factors which account for this phenomenon. In my view, the key to the solution of the issue engendered by this phenomenon is the education of Latino youth. For years the Latino community has lamented that very few Latino students graduate from a university. This issue becomes gravely critical in the context of present day technology and the amazing growth of the Latino population. Where are our educated leaders going to come from?

Who is to lead our people through the myriad political, social, and economic issues confronting them? We are in desperate need of informed and educated leaders. Every year approximately 65,000 immigrant students graduate from high school. Like their U.S. peers, they dream of pursuing higher education, but they are barred from scholarship opportunities which make their college education affordable. We are confronted with policy issues in the emergence of an age race stratified society. A paper authored by HayesBautista, Schinck and Chapa, examines the problem of a young Latino population in an aging American society. They write: “While there is an overall aging of society, an examination of the demographic pyramids shows that Latinos and other minorities are not aging at the same rate as the general population. A demographic model of the California population is developed with special emphasis on the young Latino population, which grows due to a combination of high fertility and immigration. The model is

aged from 1980 to 2030 and shows the possible emergence of an age-race stratified society, in which the older population is white and the younger working age population is largely Latino and other minorities.” In an article by Dupper and Poestner in the Social Work, September 1997 issue, they state that Resnick and colleagues found more than 70% of children, born into poverty, experienced severe academic problems during their early elementary grades. Kirst (1991) has powerfully portrayed the impact of poverty and its related problems on school performance. Unfortunately, a high percentage of Latinos fall into the poverty class. It can be safely assumed that an education provides the necessary skills and knowledge to participate in the economy of this society. What steps are needed in order to insure that every individual, especially Latinos, receive this essential education? The State of California education code states that a teacher is “in loco parentis”. Obviously this responsibility rests on the shoulders of parents

and teachers. In the past , parents have been kept out of the education process. Oftentimes the response and attitude of school administrators and teachers are expressed in negative terms, such as “Parents don’t care. Parents don’t say anything.” It is patently clear that there are many variables which contribute to the disconnect between parents and teachers. The Latino leadership must recognize that this disconnect has led to myriad problems which are barriers to the education of Latino youth, especially at the elementary and high school levels. The Latino parents must take charge and demand nothing less than a quality education for their children. All contend with variables such as curriculum, standards, teaching performance, finances and much more. Some would suggest returning to fundamentals. Knowledge about education and the learning process are limited to those who have been educated. Is the public school system willing not only to acknowledge diverse cultures, but include cultural content in its curriculum? These are all critical questions; answers are a ‘sine qua non’ in order to recognize totally the education system. Its reorganization will require total honesty, candor, and critical knowledge. In summary, we must be honest with ourselves and be very willing to take a very critical look at the educational system. Education for minorities is in a crisis. The high dropout rate results in too many youth becoming “Not Employed-Not in School (NENIS). The current education system manufactures too many NENIS. A key action needed to assist students in their development process is genuine caring. The number of students in a classroom may make it difficult to get to know each student. Focused attention should be given to students who are not doing well academically and/or are exhibiting behavior problems. These are the students who need the extra caring to not become NENIS.∆

Be Cautious When Selecting a Tax Preparer

acramento The Franchise Tax Board (FTB) and the California Tax Education Council (CTEC) reminded California taxpayers who use a tax professional to make sure they select them carefully. CTEC, a non-profit corporation established by the California legislature, and FTB have partnered to educate taxpayers about tax preparers legal responsibilities, and to make sure those preparers are complying with the law. While more than 44,000 registered tax preparers are ready to assist California taxpayers, some operate outside the law and run the risk of penalties for themselves and their clients. Taxpayers are cautioned to avoid tax preparers who: -Claim they can get bigger refunds than other tax preparers. -Base their fee on a percentage of the refund amount. -Refuse to sign the tax return as the paid preparer even though it is required by law. -Do not provide a copy of the tax return for the taxpayer's records. FTB Publication 982, How to Select an Income Tax Return Preparer offers more guidance on choosing a tax professional. Taxpayers should make sure their preparer is a licensed certified public accountant (CPA), enrolled agent, attorney, or a registered tax preparer. California requires anyone preparing state and federal tax returns for a fee, and who is not an attorney, CPA or enrolled agent, to register as a tax preparer with CTEC. Each CTECregistered tax preparer must complete courses on federal and state tax laws each year, plus obtain a $5,000 surety bond to protect clients against fraud. Unregistered individuals are issued a $2,500 penalty, which doubles if the individual continues to prepare returns. Last year, FTB assessed 45 tax preparers with penalties for failing to be properly licensed or registered. If taxpayers suspect a tax preparer is fraudulent, they should inform FTB online at ftb.ca.gov by selecting Report Tax Fraud under the online services, or by calling 800.540.FILE (3453). If a tax preparer cannot be verified as an attorney, CPA, CTEC-registered tax preparer, or enrolled agent, consumers are asked to fill out a Noncompliant Complaint Form at www.ctec.org.

Push for science and math education can mean greater rewards for students For older students, parents can act as guides by discussing the benefits of careers in the science, math and technology fields. In addition to the government's enthusiasm for science, many large corporations are eager to promote science and math education, as they will be dependent on a strong base of well-educated future employees. Scholarships for science and math students are abundantly available, and other programs offer opportunities that go even further. The Intel Science Talent Search, for instance, a program of Society for Science & the Public (SSP), is an annual competition that identifies the nation's most promising young scientists and mathematicians. Science Talent Search alumni have gone on to receive the Nobel Prize, Fields Medals, National Medals of Science and even an Academy Award, illustrating that awards for the creative and inspiring work of science are available.

International student tests have shown that America's students lag behind their peers in other countries, and many feel that it's essential to gain ground in those fields if America's future is truly going to be bright.

The Obama administration is leading the charge to emphasize the importance of science and math education. In President Obama's 2011 State of the Union address, he made a point of mentioning the need for stronger science and math education, saying, "We need to teach our kids that it's not just the winner of the Super Bowl who deserves to be celebrated, but the winner of the science fair." Obama and others have noted that without a strong science and math education, America's children might not have the skills necessary to keep innovation and technology growing in the United States. And in a world market where America must compete with other nations that have strong science and math programs, the country's future is considered to be closely tied to its students' abilities. The effort to encourage kids in science and math should come from inside and outside the classroom. Teachers and schools certainly do their part, but parents can also help foster an interest in the science and math fields. Something as simple as taking a young child to a science museum might be the catalyst for a lasting fascination that could turn into a career.

High school seniors are eligible for the award and this year, 1,744 students entered the competition with original research projects from a range of mathematical, engineering, environmental and scientific disciplines. The field was narrowed down to 300 semifinalists and $600,000 in awards was divided among the students and their schools, to support math and science resources. Forty finalists gathered in Washington D.C. to compete for more than $630,000 in awards. Evan O'Dorney, 17, of Danville, Calif., won the top award of $100,000 from the Intel Foundation for his mathematical project in which he compared two ways to estimate the square root of an integer. His research stems from an interest he developed as early as age 2, when he was checking math textbooks out of the library. O'Dorney and other finalists were also given the opportunity to meet with President Barack Obama at the White House. Obama discussed with the students the importance of science and math education and shared his encouragement of their research pursuits. "By meeting with us, it was sort of like President Obama was passing on the baton for us to take on the future," said Elaine Zhou, an Intel Science Talent Search finalist from Winter Park, FL. "We may not become politicians, we may not live in the White House, but his support of young scientists like us reinforces that we can have a strong impact and change the future for the better." The effort to take America back to the top ranks of innovative countries is manifested in the encouragement of the country's students to explore their curiosity for how the world works and develop solutions for global challenges. In fact, a 2010 study, commissioned by Microsoft, showed 85 percent of human resources professionals say that positive online reputation, to some extent, influences their hiring decisions and 75 percent report that their companies have formal policies in place that require hiring personnel to research applicants online. This means successful job seekers need to build a positive personal brand online by navigating the Web 2.0 world and taking advantage of social media sites like Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and MySpace. "What you do and say online, as well as how you present yourself on social networking sites could be important in landing the position you're seeking," says Bowen Hopper,

a former recruiter for Fortune 1000 companies and currently a career services director for Colorado Technical University, a leading provider of education for career-motivated students. By Shelly Palmer ’ve had my iPad 2 for almost two weeks now and I can say, without hesitation, it’s more fun than my iPad, but not by much. If you’re into the cosmetic and feature differences between the two devices, there is an excellent, geeky review on engaget.com. Cameras: The iPad 2 has two cameras. About the only thing you can use them for is video chatting and taking quick pic for Facebook. Considering how much hype there was around the camera, the picture quality is hugely disappointing. Apps: The iPad 2 features more powerful computer hardware than the iPad so it can run more hardware-intensive apps. Two stick out: Garage Band and iMovie. These two apps set the iPad 2 apart from the iPad. The iPad is primarily a media consumption device. You can check email, browse the web, watch a movie – but, because it is not a very powerful computer, there is not much media creation to be done. That is not the case with the iPad 2.Garage Band is buggy and sluggish on the original iPad, and buggy but awesome on the iPad 2, and iMovie (which only works on the iPad 2) is serviceable. At $4.99 each, they are an astounding bargain and clearly demonstrate the evolutionary step that the iPad 2 has taken over the iPad. With an iPad 2 you can both consume and create. The Official Apple iPad Case: The new iPad 2 case is really very clever. However, it’s just a screen cover with some magnets in it and, to be honest, I think it’s a pain to use. Will you love it? Doubtful. Thankfully, there will be literally hundreds of other choices. I have an original iPad, should I buy an iPad 2? Not necessary. Your original iPad still does almost everything that an iPad 2 will do. The only reason to purchase a new iPad 2 is for the built in VGA camera that faces you. The “HD” camera (it’s in quotes

because it is a very poor excuse for an HD camera) that faces away from you is awful. If you really want to video chat on an iPad, you will have to purchase the iPad 2. Also, if you are a musician or video maker and you really want to use the iPad as a music or video creation tool, you’ll need an iPad 2. The iPad will not run the new software. That said, as cool as Garage Band and iMovie are, if you’re serious about media creation, you really need a MacBook Pro or a killer Windows 7 box. On the other hand, because it has better hardware specs, I expect a new crop of apps to evolve that will take advantage of the power. None of the new, cool stuff will be backwards compatible because the original iPad hardware just won’t have the juice. Truly, there’s no hurry. Just wait for an app you can’t run on an original iPad and then decide if you need to drop another $829 for the privilege of running the app. I’ve never had a tablet before, should I buy and iPad 2? Like all Apple iProducts, the iPad 2 is a fashion accessory. If you want one, nothing else will do. However, if you are going to use it on the go, remember it is a 3G device. There are several 4G devices on the market. The iPad 2 will access the Internet six to 10 times slower than 4G devices. However, over WiFi it will be the same speed. Importantly, iPads (original or iPad 2) will never play flash files. This means that you cannot see the graphs on Google Analytics or other sites that use flash to generate graphs and charts. You will never see flash video on an iPad. I was taught, “Never say never,” but Steve Jobs has spoken. If you’re up for going rogue, there are a bunch of other tablet choices that are compelling. Should I get a Motorola Xoom or an iPad 2? iPad is to Apple as Xoom is to Google. If you are a gmail, Google calendar, Picasa, YouTube, Google Documents user, the Xoom is going to blow your mind. Google apps are seamlessly integrated into the Xoom and the interface is both emo-

tionally satisfying and highly usable. The Xoom is upgradable to 4G and will soon be able to play Flash files. If you have an Android phone and like it, you will love the Xoom. The key decision factors for Xoom over iPad 2 are 4G and Flash. If you don’t know what 4G and Flash will mean to you, take a minute to learn. This is a non-trivial difference between the devices. What about the BlackBerry Playbook or the Samsung Galaxy Tab or the HP TouchPad or wait for the HTC Flyer?Like I said, there are a bunch of tablet choices that are compelling. Some analysts are predicting a “tablet bubble,” saying that manufacturers have overproduced these devices to keep the prices competitive. If they are correct, tablets are going to actually get cheaper as the oversupply causes downward price pressure. Right now, Apple is the clear leader. The iPad defined the tablet market and everyone else is playing catch-up. This may not change. Apple has an uncanny way of staying aesthetically ahead of the hardware market and, as I said earlier, iProducts are fashion accessories as much as they are digital tools. However, in the next few months you will see Android tablets and WebOS tablets hit the market. They will all give you access to email, the web and hundreds of thousands of apps. The bottom line: If you want an iPad 2, go for it. You won’t be sorry. OCKVILLE, Maryland, /PRNewswireHISPANIC PR WIRE/ -- Un bajo nivel de conocimientos básicos de salud por parte de los estadounidenses de la tercera edad está asociado a un deficiente estado de salud y a un mayor riesgo de muerte, de acuerdo a lo que muestra un nuevo reporte de la HHS' Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (Agencia para la Investigación y Calidad de la Atención a la Salud del Departamento de Salud y Servicios Humanos). Helping people who are living with diabetes save on essential medications and products

SACRAMENTO – Coming a month earlier than in normal years, the annual quarantine of all mussel species publicly harvested along the California coast takes effect on March 28th. The quarantine is beginning earlier this year because testing by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) detected elevated levels of domoic acid and paralytic shellfish poisoning. “Poisoning from eating mussels can lead to severe illness, including coma and death,” said CDPH Interim Director Dr. Howard Backer. “It is critical that individuals do not consume sport-harvested mussels because there are no known antidotes to the toxins found in these mussels and cooking does not reliably eliminate the toxins.” Both domoic acid poisoning (DAP) and paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) are linked to natural food sources for filterfeeding animals, including bivalve shellfish. The overwhelming majority of illnesses among humans occur between spring and fall. DAP symptoms can occur within 30 minutes to 24 hours after eating toxic seafood. In mild cases, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, headache and dizziness may occur. These symptoms disappear completely within several days. In

PSP affects the central nervous system by producing a tingling around the mouth and fingertips within a few minutes to a few hours after eating toxic shellfish. Typical symptoms are loss of balance, lack of muscular coordination, slurred speech and difficulty swallowing. In severe poisonings, complete muscular paralysis and death from asphyxiation can occur. The mussel quarantine runs through October 31. It applies to sport-harvested mussels along the coast, including all bays, harbors and estuaries. Commercially harvested shellfish are not included in the annual quarantine. These products are certified by the state and subject to strict requirements to ensure that all mussels, oysters and clams entering the marketplace are free of toxins. na de las razones por las cuales el Cónsul General de México en San José, David Figueroa (40) se ha ganado el respeto de su comunidad es porque es un hombre que sabe escuchar y por su capacidad de liderazgo al llevar con justicia y humildad un mensaje a sus compatriotas que residen fuera de México. Figueroa, hijo de padres campesinos trabaja su última día como si fuera el primero. El Observador lo interrumpió mientras ayudaba a los trabajadores de los campos agrícolas en Salinas. Hace año y medio el saliente titular programó consulados móviles a Salinas y cada miércoles él a lado de su personal se moviliza para tramitar lo que necesitan sus compatriotas. La razón es que esta gente

que reside en Salinas se les dificulta hacer algún trámite en San José. Por esta razón se decidió movilizarse a estas zonas remotas. Figueroa se inicia como titular del Consulado en Los Angeles a partir del 25 de abril. Mientras tanto está dejando todo en orden para continuar con este gran reto. Los Angeles es el segundo lugar donde más mexicanos habitan. “Estoy muy motivado y estoy consciente del gran reto que implica Los Angeles. También es una gran oportunidad para hacer cosas por nuestra comunidad. Estoy contento de poder dar lo mejor de mi a la comunidad allá”, explicó Figueroa. El Día del Pasaporte

l sábado 9 de abril, el Departamento de Estado celebrará su tercer "Día del Pasaporte en los EE.UU." Durante esta celebración anual, los ciudadanos estadounidenses en todo el país podrán solicitar una libreta pasaporte o una tarjeta pasaporte en cualquiera de las oficinas regionales de pasaportes o lugares participantes donde se aceptan solicitudes de pasaportes, incluidas las oficinas de correos y las secretarías de los tribunales. Ahora que se avecinan las vacaciones de verano, este evento es la oportunidad perfecta para solicitar un pasaporte. La cita en San Francisco es en 95 Hawthorne Way, Fifth Floor, San Francisco de 10:00 am a 3:00pm El horario de apertura de las oficinas regionales de pasaportes se alargará el día sábado. Únicamente ese día no será necesario pedir cita, y los ciudadanos estadounidenses que no tengan previsto viajar en los próximos 14 días podrán presentar su solicitud directamente en una agencia regional de pasaportes. Se podrá solicitar tanto el trámite rutinario como el urgente. Las familias deben tener presente que los pasaportes para los menores de 16 años son válidos por cinco años. Es preciso que estén presentes el padre, la madre y el menor; pero, si uno de los padres no puede comparecer, éste deberá presentar el formulario de "Consentimiento del Menor (“Minor Consent”) certificado por un notario. Sin embargo, muchos no solicitan la ciudadanía debido a los altos costos del proceso, que suman a $675. Por primera vez en sus 15 años de exis tencia, la Colaborativa de Ciudadanía del Condado de Santa Clara ofrece dos alternativas para bajar o borrar los costos a re sidentes legales de bajos recursos: 1. Los Fondos de Oportunidad. Pueden pagar la tercera parte ($225) si asisten a clases de orientación financiera entregadas por este programa especial. 2. Perdones de Pago. Si el solicitante es de bajos ingresos y no puede pagar los $675 el Servicio de Inmigracion puede obtener una exoneración de la cantidad entera. Los que reciben beneficios públicos tienen una ventaja en este aspecto porque demuestran la falta de fondos por el hecho de calificar por estos beneficios. El Día de Ciudadanía se llevará a cabo el próximo 9 de abril en San José y Gilroy a partir de las 9:00am. l pasado 28 de marzo el oficial Devlin Creighton fue atropellado en las esquinas de la Calle Sur Primera y la avenida Alma. Según revela el informe policial, el oficial se disponía a sancionar a un vehículo que no había hecho la parada oportunamente. De pronto un segundo vehículo abruptamente se apareció delante de él expulsándolo del calmino. El oficial fue llevado al Centro Médico Regional con heridas en el rostro, dolor de cabeza, espalda, brazos y pecho. Una investigación preliminar revela que el oficial y un sargento fueron asignados a la Sur de la Calle Primera con la esquina de Alma debido a que esta intersección ocurren muchos accidentes. El oficial vio una violación de un conductor al no hacer la parada respectiva. Mientras el vehículo pasaba por la intersección un segundo vehículo dobló a la derecha en dirección sur en Monterey Rd. Directamente frente al oficial. El oficial de la motocicleta de la policía luego golpeó el vehículo sospechoso desde atrás. El vehículo sospechoso huyó hacia el sur en Monterey Road. El Distrito de Aguas del Valle de Santa Clara, ha preparado un reporte anual sobre la protección y el incremento de los suministros de agua documentando la información financiera y de la provisión de agua que sienta las bases para los cargos recomendados por la producción de agua subterránea para el año fiscal 2011/2012. El reporte incluye un análisis financiero del sistema de servicio del distrito de aguas, suministro y pronósticos necesarios; futuras mejoras de capital, mantenimiento y requisitos de operación y el método para financiar dichos requisitos. l Consulado General de México informa sobre la serie de eventos que se llevarán a cabo en el transcurso del presente año enfocados a crear conciencia respecto del crimen de la Trata de personas que se expresa en esclavitud laboral y explotación sexual. El Gobierno de México se encuentra profundamente comprometido con la lucha en contra de este flagelo social, y ha mantenido su posición de vanguardia en las iniciativas que buscan erradicarlo tanto a nivel internacional como regional. El Consulado General de México y la organización no gubernamental Standing Against Global Exploitation (SAGE) -una de las más importantes en este campo en los Estados Unidos-, han unido esfuerzos para combatir y prevenir este crimen en San Francisco y el Norte de California a través de un programa multidisciplinario de actividades dirigido a toda la comunidad mexicana de esta región. Con este esfuerzo se espera integrar a autoridades locales y agencias que tienen dentro de sus funciones y actividades luchar contra este grave problema, a fin de establecer una plataforma de coordinación que de manera rápida y eficaz, atienda

Cómo gastar menos en gasolina cuando suben los precios del combustible (ARA) ¿Recuerda cuando $4 parecía una cantidad inaudita para comprar un galón de gasolina? Ahora esa cifra no parece tan exagerada. Aunque nada se puede hacer para controlar los disturbios en el Oriente Medio ni las explosiones de plataformas petroleras que podrían elevar los precios del combustible en cuestión de minutos, hay algunas cosas que puede hacer para aliviar el dolor del alza de los precios. Aunque la compra de un automóvil más eficiente en consumo de combustible podría ser una opción para algunas personas, los nuevos y usados que hacen más millas por galón tienden a ser más solicitados - y más costosos - cuando suben los precios de la gasolina. Si un vehículo nuevo no es una opción en su caso, la implementación de los cambios siguientes puede ayudarle a garantizar el máximo aprovechamiento del combustible en su tanque: * Conservar la gasolina que compra en su vehículo. Cuando los precios de la gasolina se mantienen bajos, el robo de combustible podría no valer la pena. Pero cuando suben, no es común que los delincuentes saquen gasolina de otros vehículos, especialmente aquellos con tanques de gran volumen. La instalación de una tapa de tanque de gasolina con llave se puede hacer por mucho menos de lo que cuesta llenar el tanque. l estadio Oracle de Oakland fue estremecido por el tricolor. El seleccionado de México aplastó a los representante de Paraguay quienes regresaron a casa con tres goles en contra. ras su visita al Área de la Bahía, el golero Adolfo Ríos tuvo una jornada bastante productiva. El ex-portero acompaña a la selección mexicana durante su gira por todos los Estados Unidos. Rios además de ser la imagen de Allstate a través de la campaña "Protección a la jugada", el ex-golero del TRI busca reunir y apoyar a los jóvenes que tengan una gran pasión por el fútbol. "Por todos lados tratamos de promover la sana diversión y si podemos tratamos de apoyar a equipos locales por donde nos toque andar", explica el golero que más historia tiene en el seleccionado de México al haber jugado oficialmente 633 partidos. A su llegada Adolfo Ríos se dirigió a Hayward donde hizo una visita sorpresiva al equipo Los Pumas

de la Alianza, de la categoría sub-16. "Tenemos compromisos con la comunidad y queremos estar con la juventud. Les dimos balones, playeras, material y les dimos regalos especiales.
