McEnery Convention Center to be expanded

cially launch this planned $120 million convention center upgrade.

“The expansion is important for many reasons. First the economy...these are not the best of times for the economy but when it’s done we will have the capacity to fully serve the Sili-

con Valley with a world class convention center,” said Mayor Chuck Reed.

Reed acknowledged the efforts that had been going on for more than 8 years and was excited to announce that the bonds had been approved and issued.

Back in 2009, San Jose

hoteliers voted to institute a special dedicated hotel tax to finance this project.

“This is an investment that will truly be beneficial for the city, the convention center, and downtown,” said Bill Sherry, CEO, Team San Jose.

The convention center opened in 1989 and offers 425,000 square feet of exhibit, ballroom, and meeting space.

The expansion will add an additional 125,000 square feet of flexible ballroom and meeting room space. The convention center will be open for business as usual during renovations.

“This is going to mean jobs.

We have a 30% unemployment rate in our construction industry; this is going to be hundreds of jobs for construction workers,” said Councilmember Rose Herrera It also means that the convention center will attract and accommodate those conferences and conventions that needed more space than was available

here. After the renovations are complete, they will include San Jose when planning a business meeting.

The project is a key component of the city’s Economic Strategy and will be delivered through a Public Works-led, design-build approach, similar to the Mineta San Jose International Airport’s award-winning

$1.4 billion terminal modernization program.

“So we’re going to build it and then we have to book it, make sure it’s full. And that’s going to bring economic vitality to the whole area. It’s going to provide additional jobs because of the economic activity associated with it,” said Herrera.

Budget Cuts Today; Tax Reform Tomorrow

l próximo 1 de Mayo activistas y líderes comunitarios alistan la marcha por los derechos de los trabajadores e inmigrantes. A cinco años después de la gigantesca e histórica marcha, miles de inmigrantes guardan la fe que algún día la reforma migratoria llegará.

“La reforma migratoria” fue un tema utilizado por muchas campañas políticas y dejó como saldo a muchos decepcionados con la administración Obama. Sin embargo otro grupo de ellos no pierde las esperanzas de lograr el sueño de todos quienes cruzan la frontera para lograr una vida mejor.

Este próximo 1 de Mayo una coalición integrada por un grupo de organizaciones se suman a luchar por el derecho de trabajadores a sindicalizarse y el derecho de organización de una comunidad. La marcha también tiene como motivo buscar una reforma migratoria integral y humana. Los activistas piden un alto a las detenciones inhumanas y los abusos de los inmigrantes.

Detalles de la marcha El punto de partida será las esquinas de la calle Story y King a las 3pm y concluirá en la alcaldía de San José, localizada en la calle Santa Clara y Cuarta.

hat happened recently is ‘budget cuts’ rather than needed tax reform. We all witnessed the brinkmanship played out last Friday, April 8, 2011 when the leaders of the House, Senate and the White House dealt with the adoption of a federal budget extension in time to not have the Federal government shut down because its treasury was depleted. Both Democratic and Republican ideologies are confronting each other as the national debt ceiling is approached. The national debt keeps increasing because of very poor fiscal policy.

There is a Swahili proverb that says “When two bull elephants fight over a willing female elephant, it is the grass that gets trampled.” Such was the case last week. It is time Americans use the latest information technology communication vehicles to tell their elected officials to get down to dealing with the business of the people rather than the approaching election of 2012 or that of special interests.

The American economy is messed up today by policies of past administrations which result in undesireable outcomes. For example, recall that the George W. Bush administration entered into the Iraqi war using borrowed money. Also, recall that ‘Big Oil’ still benefits from subsidies provided when a barrel of oil cost $15. The subsidy was to encourage oil exploration. Today when ‘Big Oil’ reports profits on oil selling for $115 per barrel, it still receives those subsidies and pays almost no taxes.

It would be prudent to require a ‘sunset clause’ on all subsidies to permit reassesment and evaluation. Because of ‘Big Oil’ lobbyist activity, it is not possible today to divert all that ‘Big Oil’ subsidy funding towards the development of all types of renewable and sustainable domestic clean energy programs. This would create many jobs requiring technical education. All sorts of opportunities exist to develop and then generate energy from sunlight, wind, water, and plants (organic materials). An example is that prarie grass can be harvested for fermentation processes yielding alcohols which in turn can become gasoline additives or further processed into diesel oil.

All these efforts would enable American economy to become less dependent upon foreign crude oil.

That certainly would reduce our balance of trade deficits and result in less money going to those Arabian governments who fund Al Queda and Taliban. Who stands in the way of these new approaches? Well, it is those who perceive their current profits to be endangered. Of course it is those multi-national corporations who have more

than $1 trillion in surplus cash reserves parked in offshore banks to avoid income taxes. A conclusion already reached by many business leaders is that tax reform is required.

Consider the plight of that sharecropper in Louisiana who wanted to grow rice on land that laid fallow. The landowner would not lease the land to him because of subsidies provided by the Department of Agriculture. At a time when rice would be exported (and reduce our trade deficit), that landowner should have been forced to permit the land to be used in the most profitable manner in the national interest. That did not happen. Outcome: an unemployed sharecropper and land that remained fallow and unproductive. Who paid?

The taxpayer.

Also consider that NAFTA agreement. An undesired outcome was that many small Mexican corn growers could not compete with mechanized farming productivity of American corn growers who could produce corn (maize) at lower costs. Then when alcohol additives to gasoline were permitted, agribusiness shifted their corn sales to the alcohol fermentation industry.

This resulted in an acute shortage of ‘masa’ the base ingredient of corn tortillas. The price of tortillas went up. Keep that corn in the food chain rather than divert it toward the ‘fuel additive’ products. Those higher profits must be taxed at a higher level.

Corporations must pay fair taxes on profits realized regardless of where these profits were generated. In the past 75% of all taxes were paid by corporations; today only 25%. Presently, that money is being invested in business development opportunities offshore rather than being brought home to fund those factories needed to provide jobs to our own domestic labor force.

Tax reform is required today. Why? Because it is simply not prudent to give the very wealthy tax rates that permit payment of only 17% of their personal adjusted gross income. Many corporations pay no taxes at all because they can employ tax experts focused on development of legal strategic tax avoidance. Today the middle class and the very poor have 100% propensity to spend all their income as consumers of goods and services. This results in higher tax payments because with today’s high unemployment rate, there are millions more who are experiencing poverty.

Capitalism permits accumulation of wealth, but it is no good at distributing enough wealth to those who need a modest income required by the American Dream..

The program budget cuts today are not the required tax reforms needed now. ∆

Consulado da Apoyo a la Vivienda Por Rosario Vital - El Observador

l Consulado General de México en San José con el apoyo de diversas autoridades federales y estatales e instituciones privadas organizó del 13 al 15 de abril la “Jornada de Apoyo a la Vivienda”.

Esta jornada tuvo por finalidad preparar al público a evitar abusos en préstamos hipotecarios o contratos de arrendamiento.

También se asesoró a personas que fueron víctimas de fraude en sus préstamos hipotecarios o contratos de arrendamiento.

"Debido a la crisis que estamos pasando, nos dimos cuenta que muchos de nuestros connacionales enfrentan problemas graves de pérdidas de viviendas o pagos millonarios. Por esta razón se organizó este taller informativo totalmente gratis para ellos", dijo David Figueroa, Cónsul General de México en San José.

Por su lado Raechel Ferreira de la Corte Superior de Santa Clara dijo que ellos están para explicar el proceso legal de un desalojo, no para dar consejos pero si para ayudar a los inquilinos y propietarios.

Por su parte Maria Enomoto dijo que Surepath Financial Solution ofrece orientación gratuita para analizar los pasos a una modificación. “Las personas deben hablar al 1-877-615-7873 y los podemos ayudar” agregó la especialista.

Por su parte Jessica Fry aprovechó la ocasión para decir que todos deben buscar agencias sin fines de lucro que no cobran, para así ayudarles a solucionar un embargo, una hipoteca, desalojo o pérdida de vivienda.

“No queremos que sean engañados una vez más. Recurra a los servicios que hay en su ciudad o llame al (408) 280-2470 para que se les oriente sobre los pasos a seguir si es que está próximo a perder su vivienda. Hay gente oportunista que cobra por consultas que se dan gratuitas”, remarcó Fry. Finalmente Gilberto Barrios funcionario de el Departamento de Vivienda de la ciudad de San Jose dijo que hay personas que tienen que conti nuar en la lucha para salvar sus viviendas. La ciudad ofrece información sin costo alguno. “Aque llos que necesiten de nuestra ayuda les pido también nos hablen al (408) 794-1242”, explicó Barrios.

La Jornada de Apoyo a la Vivienda contó con la ayuda del Departamento de Vivienda de San José, de organizaciones como Asistencia Legal Para la Igualdad en la Vivienda asi como representantes de la Corte del Condado de Santa Clara y funcionarios de la ciudad de San José.

Durante esta primera jornada se ofreció valiosa información en español, a todos los mexicanos que fueron a tramitar algún pasaporte o documento.

El evento fue gratuito y se llevó a cabo en las instalaciones del Consulado General de México en San José, CA. En la foto el Cónsul General de México, David Figueroa en su último evento oficial en la ciudad de San José. Figueroa inauguró la Jornada de Apoyo a la Vivienda el 13 de abril.

Caltrain Seeks Community Volunteers for Advisory Committee

T

he Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board is seeking applicants for its Citizens Advisory Committee to represent San Francisco, San Mateo and Santa Clara counties. The CAC is comprised of nine volunteer members, who serve in an advisory capacity to the board of directors, providing input on the needs of current and potential rail customers.

Applicants must be residents of one of the three counties, and applications are due by Monday, May 9. The CAC meets the third Wednesday of each month at 5:40 p.m. in San Carlos, just one block from the San Carlos Caltrain Station. All

meetings are open to the public.

The JPB is a tri-county board, comprised of representatives from the City and County San Francisco, San Mateo County Transit District and the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority.

Caltrain operates commuter rail service between San Francisco and San Jose, with commutehour service to Gilroy. Last year, Caltrain carried nearly 12 million riders, and currently it carries an average weekday ridership of nearly 40,000.

uan Posadas (18) llegĂł de PerĂş hace dos aĂąos y medio. El joven creĂ­a que su vida se iba a concentrar en Lima, con sus amigos, su madre y su escuela.

Juan habĂ­a escuchado la posibilidad de vivir en este paĂ­s, porque su padre vivĂ­a en Estados Unidos y nunca olvidĂł a su hijo. Gonzalo el padre, siempre estuvo al pendiente de sus necesidades y no dudĂł en traerlo para culminar su carrera.

MĂĄs allĂĄ de eso, jamĂĄs imaginĂł que iba a culminar con un excelente promedio escolar (GPA 4.22) que le dio la posibilidad de ingresar la Universidad de Stanford.

Juan siempre habĂ­a ocupado el primer lugar en su pequeĂąa escuela primaria en el distrito de Salamanca en Lima. Cuando pasĂł a la escuela secundaria tambiĂŠn quedĂł en los primeros lugares.

A su llegada a San JosĂŠ, fue admitido en la Escuela Secundaria Pioneer, del Distrito Escolar Unificado de San JosĂŠ. “AĂşn recuerdo que se me hizo difĂ­cil pero no creĂ­a que nada fuera imposibleâ€?, dijo humildemente el joven de 18 aĂąos de edad.

Juan es hĂĄbil en las matemĂĄticas y ha elegido la carrera de economĂ­a. “Hasta los 12

aùos pensÊ que iba a ser abogado, aún recuerdo que cuando tenía 4 aùos y acompaùaba al Juzgado de Lima para ayudarlo a mover papeles a mi padre, quien era un abogado. Sin embargo la realidad fue otra. Me di cuenta que me gustaban los números y optÊ por continuar economía�, dice sonriente el joven estudiante.

Juan indica que no hay que perder la fe, que hay que ser persevarante y que nunca hay que dejar las cosas a medias.

Juan viviĂł separado de su padre por 10 aĂąos y a pesar del tiempo le demuestra un aprecio muy grande a su progenitor. “Quiero expresarle mi agradecimiento a mi padre. A pesar de la distancia nunca se olvidĂł de mi y fue una buena idea hacer un cambio en mi vida. Cuando yo era pequeĂąo siempre escuchaba que el ex presidente Alejandro Toledo habĂ­a estudiado en Stanford y yo me pregun taba ÂżCĂłmo lo hizo?. Es curioso ahora estoy viviendo esta alegrĂ­a yo mismoâ€?, dijo el futuro economista.

Juan practica el tenis y representa a la Escuela Secundaria Pioneer y estĂĄ involucrado en muchas actividades de la escuela. TambiĂŠn fundĂł el grupo de rock “Made in Chinaâ€?. “Como todo estĂĄ hecho en China derrepente a un grupo de amigos se nos ocurriĂł este nombreâ€? dijo Juan quien se da tiempo para todo ÂĄFelicidades por ese logro!

Leadership Academy T

he Young Democrats of America (YDA) announced the High School Leadership Academy on July 17 - 20 in Washington, D.C. This unique four-day summer camp will focus on developing the next generation of Democratic Party leaders.

Students will participate in leadership workshops and policy panels. They will be introduced to the nation's top Democratic elected officials and Party leaders.

YDA will provide an inside view of elections, the media, campaign finance, grassroots organizing, interest groups, the legislative process and careers in politics. The HSLA will feature a truly interactive experience unlike any other summer political camp in Washington.

YDA will be accepting a total of 48 students from graduating classes 2011 - 2014 with diverse leadership experience. Interested individuals should apply online by Wednesday, May 11. Final enrollment decisions will be announced by Friday, May 20.

There is a $575 registration fee, which covers hotel, meals, educational materials, a guided monument tour and ground transportation within Washington, D.C. Diabetic nerve pain, or neuropathy, is caused by nerve damage over time. This neurologic disorder most often affects the hands and feet. Pain can be a tingling, burning or cramping that disrupts a person's ability to do everyday activities.

Because nerve fibers are very sensitive to high levels of blood sugar, diabetic nerve damage typically occurs slowly. Your risk for diabetic nerve pain is higher if you: * Have poor blood sugar control * Have had diabetes a long time * Have high blood pressure * Smoke * Are tall "When neuropathy strikes, it is painful and can disrupt sleep; because of this it can also lead to mood changes and lower quality of life," says Dr. Vera Bril, a neurologist with the University of Toronto. "Diabetic nerve pain is often unreported and more often untreated, with an estimated two out of five cases not receiving care."

Bril is the lead author of new guidelines from the American Academy of Neurology that outline the most effective treatments for diabetic nerve pain. In addition to taking preventive steps like managing blood sugar levels, eating healthy and exercising, the guidelines

found that a number of drugs may also help relieve diabetic nerve pain.

According to the guidelines, strong evidence shows the seizure drug ‘pregabalin’ is effective in treating diabetic nerve pain and can improve quality of life. However, doctors should determine if it is appropriate for their patients on a case-by-case basis. In addition, the guideline found that several other treatments are probably effective and should be considered, including the seizure drugs gabapentin and valproate, antidepressants such as venlafaxine, duloxetine and amitriptyline, and painkillers such as opioids and capsaicin.

The guideline also studied a number of non-medicine treatments. Only one - transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation, or TENS, a widely used pain therapy involving a portable device - was found to help relieve diabetic nerve pain.

The nerves to the feet are the longest in the body, and this is why the feet are most affected by diabetes-related nerve pain. In order to take good care of your feet, consider the following steps: 1. Clean feet daily using warm water and mild soap.

2. Check feet and toes daily for cuts, blisters or other problems.

3. Keep toenails trimmed and filed smooth.

4. Wear shoes outside and slippers inside to protect feet from injury.

5. Make sure shoes fit well and don't cramp feet.

Celebrate “Month of the Young Child” at the 2011 San José Children’s Faire

AN JOSE, Calif.—San José Children’s Faire, to be held 10:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 16th, is expected to draw over 5,000 attendees to Discovery Meadow (in front of the Children’s Discovery Museum) in downtown San José. “Play Together, Learn Together: Growing with Giggles and Grins” is the theme for this year’s annual event, which features family-oriented stage entertainment, special attractions, and activity booths offering hands-on activities for children, ages two to 12, in addition to information for families about education, child care, health and safety resources, and recreational programs.

Los Lonely Boys

ith their latest self-produced record, Los Lonely Boys are still here, playing with no fear, and playing it by ear.

Q: Let’s start with the basics. Why did you and your brothers decide to form a band and create music?

A: “It kind of wasn’t really our choice to start the band. Music has been in our blood since before we were born. I mean our dad played with his brothers, my grandparents on both sides, my mom, my tios on my mom’s side. Everybody was already playing by the time we were born and we were just born into it, so we didn’t have a choice. We just started playing really young. We’re your average Chicano family, we get together on bar-b-q’s and quinceaneras and we were the guys that sat around with the cousins and family and played music. We really have our dad to thank for all of it. We know he’s our biggest influence. We grew up wanting to be just like daddy.”

Q: What does winning a Grammy mean to the band?

A: “Well you can’t get nothing at a pawn shop for it. No, winning a Grammy to us is the greatest honor of all. Once I found out more what it was about, I felt even more honored to have won the Grammy with my brothers. We

never did music to win awards or to become famous, we only did it because music is what we do.”

Q: You guys have opened up for Willie Nelson, how was that?

A: “Yeah, he’s our camarada, he’s like our Yoda. We get together and we try to jam and it’s just an honor. It’s also crazy because our Dad likes Willie Nelson, so when we got to meet Willie it was just like our Dad’s dream coming true through us. So it’s kind of overwhelming the way things have happened and the things we have been blessed with and the things we’ve got to see.”

Q: Tell me about the band’s latest album?

A: “Rockpango. Brand new record. The word rockpango, we made it up. We took the word wapango and and fandango and the meanings and fixed it with rockpango. Fandango is kind of like a carnival party and wapango refers to old traditional Mexican beats. We do what we call electric mariachi so we electrified a wapango beat and called it rockpango because were Mexican American and wanted to do something we can call our own.”

Q: What’s next for Los Lonely Boys?

A: “We’re just going to be touring and work on another new record, tour in Europe with Los Lobos, working all this summer, and putting our pedal to the metal.”

Gael García cuenta su experiencia de narrador ¿Planeta Humano es tu primer proyecto como narrador de un documental/serie para TV? ¿Por qué te interesaste en hacerlo?

P

Nunca había hecho la narración de una serie documental, sobre todo de historia natural, y me pareció una muy buena idea, algo con lo cual podía aprender mucho y me podía divertir haciéndolo.

Hay una distancia también muy buena al no estar en pantalla en vivo actuando. Acá es la voz lo importante. Esto te obliga a usar una herramienta que tienes: la voz; todo se basa en la intención con la que narras, la entonación… entonces, me parecía algo divertido y con lo que podía aprender mucho no sólo de la naturaleza, también aprender cómo usar este otro recurso que tenemos.

Claro… los actores en si se basan casi 100% en poner la imagen…

Bueno, pues en realidad se supone que los actores somos todo terreno. En cine, por ejemplo, hay muchos más filtros por los que pasa el producto, que en este caso no existen. ¿Qué opinas sobre la serie Planeta Hu-

El propósito es crear un ambiente que refleje armonía, estética y organización. Cuando entramos a una casa limpia y ordenada, inmediatamente experimentamos la sensación de comodidad y bienestar; lo contrario ocurre cuando visitamos un hogar descuidado y en desorden.

Cuando se comienza a evaluar el hogar, el primer paso a seguir es desechar objetos en desuso, la energía de éstos, crea obstáculos; puede tratarse de periódicos, revistas, prendas de vestir, adornos descontinuados, muebles o simplemente desperdicios. Venda, done o simplemente recicle lo que ya no le es de mayor utilidad y pronto comenzará a sentir la diferencia.

Mantenga limpios y ordenados los guardarropas y bodegas de los que disponga.

Los cinco elementos tradicionales (fuego, tierra, metal, madera y agua) deberán estar representados para simbolizar el todo universal.

La presentación de la casa debe ser agradable por dentro y por fuera.

Los colores deben ser apropiados para cada espacio de la casa.

El mantenimiento de la casa es fundamental, todo debe funcionar perfectamente. Mantenga las paredes con la pintura intacta, los escapes en los grifos deben reparase inmediatamente, los drenajes no deben observarse a simple vista, ventanas y puertas deben funcionar bien y no hacer ruidos cuando abren o cierren, vidrios rotos deben cambiarse, todos los bombillos deben funcionar, se debe contar con iluminación y ventilación adecuada.

Aromas agradables aumentan la cantidad de Ch'i positivo y crean un ambiente pacífico y relajado, por ello se recomienda utilizar aromatizantes e incienso.

Los cuadros, espejos y adornos deben limpiarse frecuentemente.

Manchas en las paredes y telas de araña deben ser removidas, pero no mate las arañas, trate de relocalizarlas en el jardín.

Los largos pasillos crean shars, para eliminar el ch'i negativo puede colgar en las paredes espejos octagonales.

Los cristales y las gemas ayudan a esparcir el ch'i positivo.

Los pasillos deben contar con suficiente iluminación y no se han de recargar con cuadros y colgijos.

El jardín se debe mantener en óptimas condiciones. Si existen plagas deben ser eliminadas.

Contenedores de basura deben permanecer limpios y cubiertos todo el tiempo.

Planeta Humano me pareció impactante, sobre todo ver lo que hace el ser humano para sobrevivir, cómo se adapta a la naturaleza. Creo que sobrevivir con tiempo libre es un lujo que tenemos.

Me impactó ver como diferentes culturas trabajan en forma similar para poder adaptarse al planeta. Existe una relación armónica entre el ser humano y la naturaleza.

Creo que todo el tiempo se trata de un balance del ecosistema.

También me impactó la manera en la cual fue filmado. Como piezas de cine, es bastante interesante la manera en que están realizadas, cómo se hicieron y también me sorprendió la adaptación que tuvieron que tener las personas que trabajaron en este proyecto, para acomodarse dentro de las culturas y las diferentes situaciones. Por ejemplo: meterse debajo del agua, andar en el fuego, meterse en una manada de animales, andar en medio de gente que no les parecía que ellos estuvieran ahí…en fin, como que todas estas cosas me parece que es un logro tremendo del documental. ¿Cómo te imaginas en una situación así? ¿En algún momento te preguntaste "que haría yo en esta situación”?

Pues de alguna manera, el documental te acerca mucho más a la especie humana, uno reconoce el tipo de actividades que hacemos para sobrevivir. Todos nacemos con ciertas aptitudes y ciertos defectos, pero el entorno nos potencia estas aptitudes o nos hacer resaltar estos defectos. Nos adaptamos al contexto.
