Por su parte Marta Donayre, declarada lesbiana cuenta que su transición no fue tan fácil como muchos piensan.

"Me di cuenta de mi opción sexual cuando yo tenía 25 años. Mis amigas en la secundaria hablaban de las sensaciones de besar a un muchacho, yo las descubrí el día que besé a una mujer.

Mi madre siempre se dio cuenta de mi opción sexual hasta que luego de vivir algunos años separada de mi familia respondí abiertamente a las preguntas de ella sobre si era lesbiana o no", dijo Donayre quien vive feliz con Leslie Bulbuk en Sunnyvale.

Salir del closet no es cosa sencilla y cada caso es diferente. Este es el caso de Andrés a quien reservamos su apellido a solicitud del entrevistado.

Andrés recibió amenazas de su padre y

nunca se volvió a hablar del tema. "Saben que soy pero no me aceptan y es difícil salir a trabajar o a la calle porque hay cosas que no se pueden ocultar y no puedo contarlo abiertamente porque mis padres no me aceptan", dijo el joven que acaba de cumplir 37 años.

Andrés explica que perder el cariño de su padre y madre le aterra por eso el tema es un tabú en casa. El joven aún recuerda que su padre le gritó "toma hormonas porque yo tuve a un hijo hombre", cuenta nervioso el residente de San José.

"Las reacciones en la familias son diferentes yo recomiendo que hay que estar seguros de uno mismo y declararlo abiertamente. No entiendo el por qué vivir un martirio en el silencio. Ayuda mucho ser independiente y la distancia con la familia. Conozco personas mayores de edad, madres de familia que temen perder a sus hijos por confesar su opción sexual...¿ por qué? La vida es tan corta", dijo Donayre.

"He visto a familias Latinas que aunque sean conservadoras eventualmente aceptan la situación. Las personas que no lo confiensan por asuntos y raíces religiosas", concluye Partida quien también contó que tanto la Comunidad Latino y Afroamericana existe un 10 a 15% de homosexuales y que está reprimidos por su cultura.

En el aspecto religioso por ejemplo la Diócesis de San José ha sido uno de los territorios romanos eclesiástico católicos más amigables en los Estados Unidos. El Padre Jon Pédigo de la Iglesia Saint Julie Billiart localizada al sur de San José dice su parroquia está abierta para que todos, es decir incluye a los homosexuales. “No rechazamos a nadie, nosotros integramos personas en la comunidad y practicamos la posición moral de la Iglesia, aceptamos a los gays católicos”, dijo Pédigo quien es un religioso y activista que sigue luchando por las causas de los homosexuales.

Martin confirmó lo que todos ya sabían y habían notado durante sus conciertos desde que se hizo cantante. Pero un silencio y un profundo dolor se veía en su mirada esquiva que finalmente terminó en una confesión por escrita.

Salir del closet no es tan fácil como lo pintan y más si la persona es famosa y tiene mucha res ponsabilidad en su imagen. Pero esa misma presión y miedo afecta a la gente de nuestro barrio, vecinos o círculo social.

"Cuando alguien como Ricky Martin sale del closet, cientos de millones de personas ahora tienen una conexión con un artista, una celebridad, y quizás lo más importante, un padre que es gay," dijo el presidente de GLAAD Jarrett Barrios, padre de dos adolescentes y abiertamente declarado gay.

"Su decisión de ser un ejemplo de apertura y de honestidad puede conducir a una mayor aceptación de innumerables personas gays en Estados Unidos, en América Latina y a través del

siguientes recomendaciones para las personas que deciden salir del closet: 1. Estar seguro de recibir un tipo de apoyo.saber qué tipo de respaldo tiene y quizás también preguntarse cuál es la razón por tomar o no tomar una decisión.

2. Una persona que sale del closet esta más contenta, está más integrada y tienen posibilidades de ser más feliz.

3. Es importante poner los pro y contra.- Preguntarse a quién tienes de apoyo y cual va a ser el impacto en tu vida profesional y personal.

4. Es de vital importancia que los que están dispuestos a salir del closet tengan a su pareja con quien están seguros van a contar para este momento. Alguien que los ame porque es difícil tomarla si se está solo o si tiene una enfermedad como el VIH 5. Finalmente aceptarse tal como son.

Elections Should Be Won, Not Bought

Support Proposition 15 on the June 8 Ballot

ur California economy, education and services are on life support but our politicians are spending most of their time raising money instead of raising issues. If we want to take the first step toward limiting special interest campaign contributors, we all need to get behind Proposition 15 on the June 8 ballot.

Proposition 15, also known as the California Fair Elections Act, will establish a voluntary pilot program to provide limited public financing for Secretary of State candidates in the 2014 and 2018 elections.

Under this path breaking pilot program the candidates qualify for the funds if they gather signatures and $5 fees from at least 7,500 registered voters, accept strict spending limits, and forego all private contributions. Each candidate with this demonstrated public support would receive the same amount, and participating candidates would be prohibited from raising or spending additional money.

The public campaign fund would consist of the voluntary contributions and a $350 annual registration fee imposed on lobbyists, lobbying firms, and lobbyist employers, who only pay $12.50 per year now. The fees on 1300 lobbyists and 3400 registered lobbying groups would go into effect on June 9, 2010 and raise approximately $1.7 million a year to support candidates for the Secretary of State-a key position in that it determines the integrity of all California elections.

Proposition 15 could also open doors for many local candidates with big ideas but small resources. Prop 15 would overthrow existing law that prohibits all city and county governments in California from adopting fair election laws.

Locally we are fortunate to have state office-holders who understand that elections should be won and not bought. The Proposition 15 Kickoff at the Unitarian Church, San Jose on March 28 was at-

tended by state leaders who are sick and tired of the undue influence of corporations, developers, and the wealthy.

State Assemblyman Ira Ruskin pointed out that when he first won election he defeated millionaire Steve Poisner, who with his own money "raised" over $6 million. Assemblyman Ruskin said that he had to devote all his time to raising funds, instead of focusing on issues of importance like the environment.

Assemblyman Jim Beall, a strong advocate for the poor, stated that the reason we have problems in California is "because of the money machine". Assemblymen Joe Coto and Paul Fong, both strong advocates for public education, decried the special corporate and financial interests that undercut access to basic public services. Assemblyman Fong and former Assemblywoman Sally Lieber pointed out that when campaign finance laws are fully implemented, such as in the case of Arizona, where more minority and women candidates run for office.

In the seven states where Fair elections systems have been adopted, voter participation has increased dramatically.

Candidates focus on the public's issues, rather than returning political favors to their campaign donors. Reforms like heath care reform are not undermined by insurance companies through massive spending to influence candidates.

According to the Fair Political Practices Commission, California politicians have raised over $1 billion since 2000. Evaluate All Entitlements

ederal programs such as Social Security, Medicare & Medi-Cal, are entitlements for eligible individuals. Many other entitlements, called subsidies, are provided to corporations. These are all subsidies which government agencies provide for a variety of reasons and may have seemed reasonable when enacted.

Unfortunately, most entitlements, except those for human services, are not reviewed and evaluated on a periodic basis. This needs to be done by both Congress and state legislatures, especially the California State Legislature, because of the influence of lobbyists and their special interests.

The Land Bank program of the Department of Agriculture needs such a review along with its distribution of food. Another is the prescription drug industry, which today enjoys a non-competitive national market wherein pricing is not subject to market competition.

In California, the most important entitlement that needs full disclosure and review is that of water allocation. Some years ago, a book entitled "Cadillac Desert" revealed how large amounts of government subsidies were used to create water storage (dams & reservoirs) and distribution systems (aqueducts, canals, and pipelines such as the Hetch-Hetchy, which feeds Crystal Springs Reservoir). The local Santa Clara Valley Water District is often accused of having a 'golden faucet'.

Water is the most critical resource in California because life and many industrial-processing industries require it for proper operation. The recent issue of National Geographic (April, 2010) is totally devoted to Water and the reality that most peoples throughout the world do not have reliable, secure, and accessible water.

California agribusiness uses 70 percent of all potable water, which is a volume that could be reduced significantly if the most efficient irrigation drip methods were applied. This will be necessary soon because of population growth projections, which indicate that 10 million more persons will soon reside here. All levels of government are involved (federal, state, local) in resolving the reallocation of the current water entitlements. An economic approach alone is not enough. A holistic approach is needed which includes the need for potable water for the people coupled with a need to have no negative impact on the environment; and the need to do what is reasonable, fair, and affordable. of Crystal Springs Dam are just more of the same old technologies applied to ensuring adequate available water resources.

Locally, potable water needs to be recovered from all that sewage treatment plant effluent which is 99 percent water and 1 percent suspended solids. This technology is already being used in Orange County and San Diego County. It takes about 8 to 10 years to build the facility needed.

That needs to begin very soon despite its cost estimated at $40 billion. This project will provide for all kinds of job opportunities as well as ensure future potable water supplies.

Another entitlement that is very basic is the use of land. It is criminal to pay landowners to keep agricultural land fallow when the food, which could be produced, is needed in the world market and could provide for import/export revenues as well as jobs. The current practices of the Department of Agriculture need to be re-evaluated and redirected. This item is an example of an entitlement, which would help reduce federal subsidies and therefore reduce the federal budget deficit.

Education is viewed as a right and entitlement. However, over time it has been forgotten that the proper mission of education is to enable each individual student with the capability of reading, writing, and arithmetic coupled with knowledge of local civics and social teamwork skills requiring communication capability. K to 10 instructional programs need to focus on these basic skills. It is up to each individual to prepare for professional and vocational capabilities to earn a living. It is time for parents to begin to direct and influence the course content provided by their local school districts because much of the current course content does not relate to the reality to be faced by the developing student who then tunes out and drops out. Many programs such as 'No Child Left Behind', 'Race to the Top', and STEM (a program focused on science, technology, engineering and mathematics) do not include any effort to include, inform, and engage the parent who is very influential with the guidance a child receives. This is a very local public policy issue.

So, if we want to reduce the budgets of local, state, and federal agencies, which are all currently facing deficits, there is a great need for all elected officials to ignore the guidance of special interests (unions & lobbyists) and begin to review and reevaluate all existing entitlements.Δ

It's never too early to begin conversations about the future, especially because you want your children to make the most of their college education.

"In today's world, the most successful professionals will be those who have a calling to the profession that they enter," said James Montoya, vice president for Higher Education Relationship Development at the College Board and former vice provost for student affairs at Stanford University.

The top three intended majors listed by 2009 Latino seniors who took the SAT(r) college entrance exam were in the health professions, business and engineering.

"It's great if a student becomes a financial consultant or a computer engineer; however, parents should be careful not to pressure their children into careers mainly for financial gain," emphasized Montoya. "They should also encourage their children to explore their passions."

Most students will need to invest time and effort to discover their interests. One of the best ways is through internships, which expose students to the day-to-day realities of a particular profession. Often, internship experiences lead to jobs.

The U.S. Department of Labor's job growth projections were examined by U.S. News and

World Report in "The 50 Best Careers of 2010."

The article highlights positions that will add jobs in the next decade and provide an above-average median income. The list includes jobs representing a wide range of majors.

For example, a graduate with any bachelor's degree can break into entry-level event planning.

The median pay for meeting and convention planners was $44,260 last year, and earnings ranged from about $25,000 to $75,000.

Other growing occupations mentioned in the report were veterinarian and meteorologist. For kids who love animals or get a thrill out of hurricane-force winds, these might both be incredibly interesting and provide a good income.

There are also many professions, such as Xray technician, that require two-year or vocational degrees. According to the article, health care professions have shown resiliency in this economy, and there will be continued demand in this area.

"The key to helping your child find a fulfilling career is to understand what their interests are by seeing what they like doing, reading and talking about," said Renée Gernand, director of College Planning Services for the College Board.

"Talk to your children about how they would like to spend their workday, and then research college majors that would enable them to fulfill those dreams," added Gernand.

Cada forma del Censo 2010 contiene una barra de código único, así como un número de identificación de 20 dígitos, lo que permite al Buró del Censo contar con precisión los domicilios que corresponden respectivamente a ciudades y condados.

Para evitar que oportunistas y timadores se aprovechen de ésta operación nacional, y para asegurar que el conteo sea seguro y confidencial, la siguiente información le ayudará a la población a evitar fraudes y trampas: · La barra de código y el número de identificación de 20 dígitos se encuentran en la parte de atrás del cuestionario del Censo 2010. · Ninguna pregunta en la forma del Censo 2010 pide el número de seguro social, la licencia de conducir, cuenta de banco ni número de identificación personal (PIN, siglas en inglés), ni estatus migratorio.

AVISO PÚBLICO AGENCIA DE PROTECCIÓN AMBIENTAL DE LOS ESTADOS UNIDOS INICIA LA TERCERA REVISIÓN DE CINCO AÑOS DE LIMPIEZA EN EL SITIO SUPERFUND LORENTZ BARREL & DRUM, CO. La Agencia de Protección Ambiental de los Estados Unidos (EPA, por sus siglas en inglés) ha iniciado la tercera revisión de cinco años en el Sitio Superfund Lorentz Barrel & Drum, Co. en San José, CA. La revisión evaluará si las acciones de limpieza continúan protegiendo la salud humana y el medio ambiente.

HISTORIA DEL SITIO Operaciones de reciclaje de la compañía Lorentz Barrell & Drum comenzaron en una porción de propiedad de 6.72 acres, en un sitio de 10.5 acres en 1947. Durante los primeros años de operación, partes de la propiedad fueron vendidos o arriendados a otras compañías. El Sitio recibió más de dos millones de tambores de más de 3,000 partidarios en conexión con las operaciones de reciclaje hasta que fue cerrada por un orden judicial en Julio 1987. La fabrica recibió tambores conteniendo deshechos líquidos, solventes orgánicos, ácidos, oxidantes, y aceites para el desecho. Los tambores fueron reacondicionados con una variedad de métodos incluyendo lavamiento acido y cáustico, incineración, granalladación (rociando tambores con esféricas pequeñas de metal), y limpieza al vapor. Los residuos y los materiales de limpieza fueron desechados hacia depresiones y cuencas en el sitio andes de ser expulsados hacia los colectores de aguas pluviales. El Sitio fue agregado a la Lista a de Prioridades Nacionales (NPL) en 1989 para abordar el resto de la contaminación de tierra y agua subterránea. everal Cities, companies and organizations have joined forces in an effort to create the largest multi-jurisdiction renewable energy procurement effort in the U.S. It is the largest public renewable energy procurement in terms of both number of sites and number of jurisdictions participating, although not in total installed capacity.

"The reality of funding this sort of renewable energy project is very difficult these days," said Santa Clara County Supervisor Dave Cortese (District 3). "That is why we created this partnership and I am encouraged by the possibilities."

Named the Regional Renewable Power Purchase Initiative, and put out to bid this week, elected officials are lauding the effort for its magnitude and because it represents a monumental step to move public agencies to renewable energy sources and away from fossil fuels. The purchase, with a total planned solar capacity of 14.4 Megawatts, will include renewable power for a total of 70 sites across 43 separate locations, with 9 participating cities and agencies lead by the County of Santa Clara.

When Phase I is completed, in 2011, this project will have the environmental impact of planting over 2,800 acres of trees, or removing over 2,600 passenger cars from the roads, or providing more than enough energy to power 2,700 California homes for a year.

"This project will also create jobs throughout the county," Cortese said.

Some of the cities involved in this project include San Jose, Milpitas, Mountain View and Cupertino. Valley Transit Authority, Rethink Waste, and Joint Venture Silicon Valley are also involved in the partnership.

"This project is harder then it looks and there are many barriers," said Russell Hancock, President and CEO of Joint Venture: Silicon Valley Network. "This partnership is a testament to the dedication of all parties on this project."

VTA has identified two sites for renewable energy systems VTA's North Bus Maintenance and Operations Division in Mountain View, and the Guadalupe Light Rail Maintenance and Operations Division in San Jose. The proposed solar panel canopies at VTA's facility in Mountain View will provide a number of direct and indirect energy and greenhouse gas emission reduction benefits.

"This program will reinforce VTA's commitment to create a

greener Santa Clara Valley through the reduction of greenhouse gases and the use of renewable energy," said Margaret Abe-Koga, Mountain View City Councilmember and Vice Chair of the Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) Board of Directors.

The County of Santa Clara's Facilities and Fleet Department provided project management expertise and overall coordination of the regional effort and procurement.

OBJETIVOS DE LIMPIEZA Los objetivos de limpieza para el agua subterránea poco profunda son proteger la salud humana y el medio ambiente al prevenir más migración de la columna de contaminación hacia Coyote Creek y los pozos que entregan agua potable en el acuífero profundo y a restaurar la calidad de agua subterránea. Para alcanzar estas metas, un sistema de bombeo y tratamiento fue instalado y sigue operando hoy. En 1998, el ESD permitió un cambio en la tecnología de tratamiento del agua subterránea para aumentar la eficiencia y significativamente reducir gastos de operación y mantenimiento.

Para las tierras contaminadas del Sitio, el remedio indica que habrá acciones para llegar a niveles de limpieza que protegen usos en el futuro de comercio e industria.

Acciones de limpieza de la tierra incluyen una sistema de extracción de vapor de la tierra para sacar los productos orgánicos volátiles (VOCs); una cobertura de capa singular, para eliminar la exposición a la tierra contaminada y minimizar el escurrimiento de los contaminantes causado por la infiltración de agua de la superficie; el retiro y la disposición fuera del sitio de las cenizas del incinerador además de el sistema séptico contaminado y líneas de pipas contaminadas; y restricciones al uso de propiedad (también conocido como controles institucionales) para prohibir el uso residencial en el futuro en el Sitio. EL PROCESO DE REVISIÓN Cuando la acción de limpieza de la EPA deja contaminación en su lugar o cuando la limpieza tarda más de cinco años para completarse, la ley Superfund requiere una evaluación cada cinco años de que tal protegen los sistemas de recuperación para permitir acceso sin restricciones hasta que el Sitio ha sido suficientemente limpiado. El propósito de la revisión de cinco años es para entender cómo el remedio construido está funcionando, medir el progreso hacia lograr los objetivos de limpieza del Sitio, y asegurar que la acción protege la salud humana y el medio ambiente. he occasional rider on a light rail has a lower risk level of being in an accident than the frequent rider, but both can be sure that the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) will respond accordingly.

munication center for the incident," said Brandi Childress, Community Outreach Supervisor for the Santa Clara VTA. The first goal is to preserve life. The light rail operator has to make sure that passengers stay put until medical units can respond, unless the operator is hurt. Since that was the case during the drill, the passengers were screaming and very nervous.

VTA employees and their relatives played the role of the light rail passengers. The light rail was assumed as derailed, the call was made and the action began.

The fire department arrived, jumped right in and located the passengers that were slightly injured, placed them on the back of the train and continued to separate passengers according to their injury status.

"The one thing we need to keep in mind is the real thing is going to be a lot easier than training because in training you have try to get people to act a part," said Bruce Turner, VTA Safety Manager.

The light rail passengers were individually asked if they were in pain, and if they were they were, asked to point out the spot. The ones with minor

injuries had a tag placed on their hand, along with the seriously injured. The tag clearly indicated minor or immediate attention.

The fire department teams evacuated the passengers placed in the back, while the seriously injured were taken out on stretchers to be further

helped by paramedics. The fire department practiced using medical radios from American Medical Response (AMR) to get a better feel for them in the future.

"Things seemed to run real smooth, the VTA, the sheriff's agency, the AMR, and county fire," said Captain Steve

Werner, Santa Clara County Fire. "We worked very well."

Everybody stayed in character throughout the entire drill.

It was very realistic and everybody reacted to the situation in various ways. Simulations are beneficial and if they continue with them, emergency response will improve.

El derecho a que se respete nuestra integridad, a tener condiciones laborales dignas, a que se nos trate con decencia y como ciudadanos de primera.

Ahora bien, existen deberes que debemos cumplir.

Deberes que pueden engrandecer y poner en alto a nuestra comunidad, por ejemplo: aprender el idioma, progresar culturalmente, involucrarnos en la comunidad y en labores sociales y human-

itarias, darle prioridad a la educación de nuestros niños y jóvenes; mantener limpios nuestros vecindarios, tener "solamente el número de hijos" a los que se les pueda dar una vida digna; respetar el derecho de los demás. Debemos comportarnos de la mejor manera posible y evitar lo obvio, que es no actuar en contra de la ley.

"No cometer delitos de ninguna índole", respetar la privacidad de nuestros vecinos, respetar las señales y las leyes de tránsito, etc.

Para recibir debemos "primero dar". Claro, somos buenos trabajadores y pagamos impuestos, pero ahora debemos ir al "extra mile" y demostrar todo lo bueno y lo

Legendary Teacher Jaime Escalante has Passed Away

T

he family of famed teacher Jaime Escalante, 79, has announced that he passed away at 2:27 pm on March 30, 2010. The cause of death was coronary and respiratory failure, precipitated by cancer.

A native of La Paz, Bolivia, and the son of two elementary-school teachers, Escalante came to America in 1963 at age 33. Although he was already an accomplished and popular science and mathematics teacher in Bolivia, he spoke almost no English and had to return to school to become a certified teacher in California.

He worked at a series of jobs as he studied, from a restaurant to a computer company, and in 1974 attained his goal. Arriving at Garfield High School in East Los Angeles, he encountered a culture of low expectations, gang activity and administrative apathy.

His success in overcoming these odds and in enabling "unteachable" students to master advanced mathematics made him a national and international hero. The 1988 movie about his Garfield AP Calculus program, "Stand and Deliver", remains one of the most popular and beloved films ever made about the teaching profession.

His career has been celebrated in a number of books, most notably "Escalante: The Best Teacher in America" (1989), by Washington Post writer Jay Mathews. He became a presence in classrooms throughout the U.S. - and the world - through the PBS series FUTURES with Jaime Escalante. One of the most popular classroom programs in the history of public broadcasting, FUTURES combined examples of Escalante's teaching style with his purpose to help his students discover rewarding careers in math and science.

"Jaime exposed one of the most dangerous myths of our time - that inner city students can't be expected to perform at the highest levels," said Edward James Olmos, who played Escalante in Stand and Deliver. "Because of him, that destructive idea has been shattered forever. This is a legacy that changed American education, and I will work to ensure that it continues long into the future."

His wife, two sons, and six grandchildren survive Escalante. Services are pending. Donations can be sent to the Jaime Escalante Legacy Project at 236 West Mountain Street, Suite 105, Pasadena CA 91103.

The ceremony touched on the contributions of women and the evolution they are experiencing. The pioneers were remembered as well as the present veterans.

The evening was dedicated to the fallen soldiers and to recognize the women veterans in the Santa Clara County who served in World War II. Barbara London, Barbara Squire, Lourdes Castro, May Alm, and Janie Tilbury were all acknowledged.

"I want to recognize and convey my gratitude to the active duty and veterans that are here," said Rose Herrera, Air Force Veteran, San Jose City Council, (District 8).

There was talk about the contributions women have made as well as the barriers they have to overcome. There is a record of women serving since the Revolutionary War and beyond that, including the times when women were disguising as men.

"We must make sure our sisters are treated fairly while they serve and when they come home," said Herrera.

Opportunities to serve weren't always there and they were proven

wrong. Many women paved the way and there is a need to repay them for all their work.

"We hope that you as a community will open up our arms to them and allow them to feel welcomed," said Diana Marroquin, Air Force Veteran, and Event Chair.

Once the women come home, they might have some health issues that need to be resolved and those services are available. They have the option to receive care from a private doctor or a more general setting.

"The majority of the women that are now coming to the VA are from Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom," said Samina Iqbal, MD, Medical Director of Women's Health Center of Excellence, Veterans Affairs (VA) Palo Alto.

They also know that the women who serve in these two combats have significant mental health issues. Comprehensive care is given at the VA, making sure that the right mental health care services are being provided to the women.

Women have put their life on the line for something they believe in for so many years. Recognizing them with a dozen flowers and a certificate is only a reminder of their endurance and contributions along the years.

Practical Tips for Osteoarthritis of the Knee

T

hese new tips are an extension of our previous knee tips presented in ARTHRITIS INFO Nos. 1 and 11, which contain many basic principles and which we would like to recommend once again.

Causes 1. Excessive Stress Anyone who regularly puts excessive stress on the knees during work (for instance as a floor installer), or who is overweight, has an increased risk of developing osteoarthritis of the knees. The same is true for those engaged in athletic activities with a high degree of stress and a high risk of injury to the knees. Patients who are overweight can help their joints a great deal by going on a vigorous weight-loss program (please refer to pages 4 - 6 of this issue).

People who already have knee arthritis should avoid kneeling and squatting on the job.

2. Effusion or "Fluid within the Joint" Overuse of an osteoarthritic knee almost always causes effusion, or excess fluid within the joint. Unfortunately, this additional joint lubricant cannot replace the missing cartilage. In fact, it places more strain on the joint, which often swells up uncomfortably, resulting in increased strain on ligaments and tendons that can contribute to joint stiffness. Treating the inflammation with ice, elevation, and medication, can often reduce the excess fluid, but sometimes it must be drawn out of the knee by needle puncture.

3. Is Cortisone Still Used?

Cortisone is a very potent substance that can relieve pain and inflammation in an amazingly short period of time. Unfortunately, though, these injections can cause harm to the joint and the rest of

the body if they are given too frequently and in too high a dose.

Therefore, when cortisone has to be used in certain selected cases, physicians today see to it that the doses are kept as small as possible and that injections are repeated only after long intervals.

Treatment: Bandages and Wraps Significant relief from acute inflammation of the joint can also be obtained with simple, increasingly popular home remedies.

These may include wraps that you can make out of chilled curds or cottage cheese. They can cool the joint and help reduce the swelling. Just spread a finger-width layer onto the inflamed joint, cover it with plastic wrap, and then wrap the joint with an elastic bandage. This treatment is particularly effective if the joint is relieved of stress at the same time, e. g. by limiting activity and spending time with the knee elevated.

Exercise The following exercise can help to carefully strengthen the muscles and maintain flexibility.

1 - Lie on your back in a comfortable position.

2 - Bend the healthy knee until your foot is in a comfortable, flat position.

3 - Now, keeping the arthritic knee straight, raise the leg until your heel is about a foot off the ground. Simultaneously, bend your toes upward, and hold this position for about 7 seconds.

After a short rest (7 seconds), repeat the exercise several times.

The whole routine should take about 5 minutes.

Alma Neighborhood Left Without a Soul

S

eniors from around the Alma neighborhood in San Jose held a mock funeral because of the recent decision to close the Alma Youth/Senior Center.

"We're going to be lost without our center, we're going to be floundering around not knowing where to go," said Elena Martinez.

Several seniors who felt the same way attended the mock funeral, properly dressed in black, some with veils and others in their wheelchairs. They all presented flowers to the black casket that represented the center that lay in front

of them.

The San Jose Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services Department proposed the closure of the center. The City Council voted on the proposition and agreed to close the center at the end of June.

"I've been going to the center since I was 8 years old and I'm 42 now," said Diane Perez, a volunteer.

The casket was filled with a mixture of items. There were cleats to acknowledge the soccer league the center offers to the youth, as well as a shattered high school diploma, food, and even a bingo sign being buried. The community

was burying dreams and sorrows.

"Without the youth center, kids will have nowhere else to go and as much as the city tries to combat youth violence and gangs, we should all be considering that the youth center serves as a prevention measure to keep kids off the streets," said Aaron Carrera, a San Jose youth. "I know what it is to be pressured to follow the wrong path."

The Mayor's Gang Taskforce identifies the neighborhood as a high-risk area for gang activity and many of the seniors see the change in kids’ attitudes once they start going to the center.

The youth who go to centers drift away from the

violence and gangs and are provided with a safe place.

The center also provides friendships and a free meal to the seniors that visit daily. Many also feel that without the center, they would be isolated in their homes with nothing to do. They like playing bingo and doing the little exercise their body allows them, but most importantly they socialize.

"Alma, your name in Spanish means soul and quite simply, that is what you have been to me and to all of us, the Soul of this community," said Martinez, during the eulogy.

lena Martínez a sus 94 años de edad lleva gran parte de su vida asistiendo a lo único que su barrio le podía ofrecer, diversión y tranquilidad. "El Centro Comunitario Alma era el "alma" de nuestra gente, y solo gente desalmada nos lo puede quitar", dijo Martinez quien no puede aceptar el cierre de este lugar.

El pasado 29 de marzo un grupo de personas de la tercera edad así como jóvenes lamentaron en un acto simbólico la muerte de este centro. Asistieron al funeral miembros del centro y ancianos que hacían uso del centro.

Para los vecinos de este vecindario- muchos de ellos son familias de bajos recursos - el centro re presentó su único alimento del día, para los jóvenes un lugar seguro para mantenerse alejados de las pandi llas.

El centro localizado en la 136 W. de la avenida Alma es una zona identificada por el Comité de Prevención de Pandillas como un lugar de alto riesgo debido a la violencia criminal y a las actividades pandilleras.

El Departamento de Servicios de Parques, Recreación y Vecindarios propuso reusar o cerrar este centro que por cierto lleva 40 sirviendo a este sector de la comunidad. El cierre del centro le aho

rrará 148 mil dólares y el Concilio de la ciudad votó a favor un plan que busca rescatar solo 12 centros comunitarios y el resto sera utilizado para organizaciones no lucrativas.

Esto va a tener un gran impacto en los residentes que viven en el vecindario de Alma y Washington.

La ciudad ha propuesto que las personas vayan a otro centro cercano pero esto no es posible para los jóvenes quienes tendrían que enfrentar el peligro si se acercan a otros grupos de pandillas, expresaron vecinos del área.

"El cierre del centro no solo solucionará el déficit presupuestal sino que también tendrá dramáticas consecuencias para los niños, personas de la

tercera edad y familias trabajadoras que aún continúan enfrentando pobreza y violencia", dijo Martínez.

Los recortes propuestales a los centros y sus programas eliminarían 38 puestos de trabajo y aho rrarían $ 4.3 millones en el primer año, y $ 5 mi llones al año después de eso. El departamento de parques recomienda que los edificios utilicen de forma gratuita por organizaciones no lucrativas que sirven al público.

lobal warming has affected the lives of many species throughout the world. Some have lost food sources and have had to adapt to their degraded surroundings in order to survive.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium hopes its new and compelling special exhibition will show the effect that climate change has had on the ocean's wildlife.

The exhibition's name is "Hot Pink Flamingos: Stories of Hope in a Changing Sea," and it opened on March 29, 2010.

The exhibit reminds us that we all belong to this Earth and are responsible for taking care of our home - and that we can help lessen the impacts of the climate crisis.

"In the fight to counter the effects of climate change, the oceans will be our most important battleground," said Aquarium Executive Director Julie Packard. "Hot Pink Flamingos" brings visitors face to face with the ocean animals impacted by our daily lives. It also shares stories of hope and change from around the world - examples of the things we can all do to help solve the climate crisis - small things alone, and big things together - for all of our tomorrows."

It is one of the few exhibitions in the country to focus on the many impacts climate

change is having on marine wildlife, at a time when few people associate climate change with the oceans.

Hot Pink Flamingos highlights global stories of hope and success, and provides tools for visitors to help reduce their carbon footprint.

The exhibition offers many reminders that we all belong to this Earth and are responsible for taking care of our home, and that we can lessen impacts of the climate crisis by making small changes on our own and big changes together.

The Flamingos come from South America and are 2.5 to 4.5 feet tall, with a 4- to 5-foot wingspan. The bird's characteristic plumage is the result of its diet - small crustaceans and algae rich in red pigments. Flamingos are filter feeders, putting their heads upside-down underwater to strain out food items. This species is apparently declining somewhat rapidly due to egg harvesting, hunting, disturbance and the degradation of its habitat. It's classified as near threatened on the World Conservation Union's (IUCN) red list.

Visitors will also gain a new perspective on global climate change by viewing its potential impacts on tropical wading birds, green sea turtles, the colorful creatures that inhabit coral reefs, hypnotic jellies, playful Magellanic penguins and other ocean animals.

erkeley, California, _ El Lawrence Hall of Science (LHS) de la Universidad de Berkeley en California es una de las organizaciones que ha sido escogida para participar en la celebración de Pascua en la Casa Blanca. El 5 de abril, Lawrence Hall of Science formará parte del tradicional festival infantil conocido como "Easter Egg Roll" (Carrera de Huevos de Pascua). very family has its share of extreme characters, and ours is no exception.

For evidence, look no further than the newest exhibit at the California Academy of Sciences. Extreme Mammals: The Biggest, Smallest, and Most Amazing Mammals of All Time showcases some of our most intriguing relatives, from the speedy to the sloth-like, the towering to the tiny, even the venomous and the armor-clad. Featuring spectacular fossils and reconstructions alongside recent specimens and live animals, the exhibit explores the surprising and often extraordinary world of extinct and living mammals. A whale that could walk? A bat the size of a bumble bee? Mothers who are pregnant for almost two years... or just 12 days?

Extreme Mammals will allow visitors to meet this colorful cast of characters, discover their place in the family tree, and learn why humans are perhaps the most extreme mammals of all.

The exhibit opens on April 3, 2010 and runs through September 12, 2010.

During a trip through the world of Extreme Mammals, visitors will learn how mammals evolved, how scientists define this group (would you have guessed one of the defining traits is the ability to eat and breathe at the same time?), and how some of the most extreme adaptations in the mammalian family support survival and reproduction. Highlights of the exhibition include taxidermy specimens-from the egg-laying platypus to the recently extinct Tas-

manian wolf-as well as fleshed-out models of spectacular extinct forms, such as Ambulocetus, a "walking whale." Visitors will encounter an entire skeleton of the giant hoofed planteater Uintatherium, with its dagger-like teeth and multiple horns; the skeletal model of Puijila darwini, a newly discovered extinct "walking seal" from the High Arctic with webbed feet instead of flippers; a life-size model of Indricotherium, the largest land mammal that ever lived; one of the oldest fossilized bats ever found; and an impressive diorama featuring the warm swamps and forests that flourished on Ellesmere Island, located in the High Arctic, about 50 million years ago.

Another mammal featured in the exhibit, Homo sapiens, may look more familiar, but this big-brained, bipedal mammal has evolved several extreme features. "We don't often think of ourselves as extreme mammals, since we don't have long horns or venomous spurs," said Dr. Zeresenay Alemseged, Curator of Anthropology at the California Academy of Sciences.

"However, we are without a doubt one of the most extreme mammals that evolution has produced. Our brain-to-body weight ratio is higher than any other mammal on Earth, and our ability to make and use complex tools sets us apart from all other life forms. That trait has enabled us to occupy virtually all parts of our planet and even explore others." Dr. Alemseged's research, including his discovery of the oldest and most complete known hominin child, will be featured in a video display in the exhibit.

México, (Notimex) l cantante Christian Chávez, ex integrante del grupo RBD, aseguró que afronta con alegría y motivación el futuro, sin temor a fracasar con su primer disco como solista que va dirigido a todo el público y no sólo a la comunidad gay.

"Estoy muy contento con este material que preparé durante un año, quise mejorar mi técnica vocal, mi baile y composición, pues hice dos coautorías con Samo, de Camila, por lo cual es una obra muy personal y a la vez muy universal.

Admitió que como todo inicio de proyecto, ha sentido temor de fracasar, no obstante, cree que pensar así no le ayudaría en nada.

"Más bien te quitan voluntad. Siento nervio por las expectativas, pero definitivamente, si uno no hace ni lucha por lo que quiere, ¿para qué vienes a esta vida?.

Los Tigres siguen produciendo y trabajando duro en su última producción titulada "Granja".

En 1968, los hermanos tuvieron que dejar su tierra natal, Rosa Morada, Mocorito, Sinaloa, México y emprender su camino hacia Estados Unidos, con la esperanza de ayudar a su familia.

Un día, después de tocar en la ciudad fronteriza de Mexicali, fueron contratados para actuar en un desfile del 'Día de la Independencia' en San José, California, el grupo en ese entonces aún no tenía nombre y fue un oficial de inmigración, quien los llamó 'Little Tigers', y como viajaban hacia el norte, completó su frase con la expresión 'The Tigers of the North', Los Tigres del Norte, dando así origen al nombre del grupo. El grupo se estableció en San José, California, la ciudad que hasta hoy permanece como su lugar de residencia.

Este sábado 3 de abril, Los Tigres del Norte se presentan en el San Jose Convention Center y como siempre agotan las entradas. La agrupación pasa a Santa Rosa, luego a Reno, Salt Lake City, Utah, Phoenix, Arizona y continua una larga gira por todos los Estados Unidos.

El Gobierno del Distrito Federal informó que a través de la Secretaría de Turismo se le rendirá un homenaje al jugador dos veces mundialista por México en Francia 1998 y Corea-Japón 2002.
