E

l defensor de los inmigrantes, Senador Ted Kennedy partió y ha dejado un gran vacío en nuestra comunidad. El respetable político representó una figura dominante en asuntos del cuidado de la salud, derechos sociales y civiles y relaciones exteriores.

Kennedy dejó un legado de legislación de servicio público.

Kennedy luchó hasta el final para avanzar la reforma migratoria, y cuando no se logró este objetivo, instó a los líderes comunitarios de cada estado a que continue con la tarea de esta lucha.

“Se le recuerda con profundo agrade cimiento por su constante lucha en favor de los derechos de los inmigrantes y en los últimos años, por sus inmensos esfuerzos

en tratar de concretar una reforma migratoria integral. Kennedy fue algo así como la “conciencia” del Senado, de los demócratas del Senado, de los demócratas en general. La esperanza es que quienes queden atrás muestren al menos una fracción de esa conciencia y del compromiso de Kennedy para hacer realidad la reforma migratoria”, indica Maribel Hastings de America’s Voice. “ El movimiento progresista perdió un héroe. El Senador Ted Kennedy sirvió sin tregua en el Senado para el estado de Massachusetts y la nación por más de cuatro décadas, poniendo todos sus esfuerzos en temas decisivos progresistas como la educación, la reforma migratoria, la lucha contra la pobreza, la expansión de los derechos civiles, y la labor de garantizar el cuidado de la salud para cada estadounidense. Cuando se trataba de extender su mano a través de partidos, crear compromisos y actuar en algo, el Senador Kennedy no t e n í a comparación”,cita John Podesta, Presidente y CEO, de Center for American Progress.

“El lide razgo, sabiduría y habilidad política del Senador Kennedy eran únicos”, dijo el Director del Sierra Club en Massachusetts, James McCaffrey.

Por su parte la Congresista Barbara Lee dijo, “Ted Kennedy siempre mostró gran compasión por los menos afortunados y dedicó su vida a mejorar las vidas de otros en el mundo.

En San José se recordó su trabajo a lado de César Chavez y su compromiso para ayudar a quienes menos tienen. Las circunstancias pueden cambiar, pero la labor de la compasión debe continuar. “Estas palabras perduran hoy y proporcionan una sólida orientación a los que están al servicio del público.”, asi lo dijo el alcalde de San José, Chuck Reed.

Por su parte el Asambleista Joe Coto dijo que “El senador Ted Kennedy fue más que una figura pública en la política estadounidense. Su muerte debe alentar a todos a reflexionar sobre sus diversos logros como senador y líder. Luchó por los jóvenes, los ancianos, los enfermos, los pobres, las personas que luchan con discapacidad,a quienes se les niegan los derechos civiles básicos que todos los estadounidenses tienen derecho.

En algunos de los momentos más trágicos y difíciles de nuestro país, Ted Kennedy reunió a sus fuerza y concentró su energía en el desarrollo de un futuro más esperanzador. Ya que una nación y como pueblo, nos alentó a desarrollar el liderazgo inspirador de sus dos hermanos y lo utilizan para dejar un legado de la transformación social que es lo que era capaz de lograr.

Se sumó a los comentarios el Presidente la Universidad Hispana, David Lopez “El Senador Kennedy y la familia Kennedy, han sido guerreros a favor de las clases trabajadoras y el pueblo. El Senador, así como su familia, han luchado siempre por la igualdad social, acceso a la educación y servicios de salud. También fue líder en el proceso de la reforma migratoria. Deseamos que él y otros grandes familiares que han dedicado su vida al servicio de los demás descansen en paz.

Todos debemos esforzarnos por mantener vivo su legado.”

“Fue un gran patriarca de la familia Kennedy. Fue una inspiración para todos nosotros. Aquellos que conocimos sabemos de la calidad de persona que fue. Muy humano, muy justo, mediador, negociador en situaciones difíciles,” asi lo dijo la Vocera de la Casa de Representantes, Congresista Nancy Pelosi quien vio por última vez al Senador para hablar sobre una Legislación de Voluntariado en America. ¡Gracias Senador por apoyarnos, descanse en paz!Δ

Latinos will miss Senator Edward M. Kennedy’s Advocacy and Leadership.

pon learning that Senator Kennedy had died this past night (August 26, 2009) because of his brain tumor affliction which he coped with for the past 18 months, I decided to present to our EO readership some comments concerning the impact and meaning of this man’s passing on. As publisher of EO, I want our readers to know what this loss means to the Hispanic-Latino community. Kennedy was a champion for what was right for the people; was an excellent negotiator; had an ability to get the other party to see reason, etc. He was known as the “Liberal Lion”. The public policy arenas of labor law, health care, civil rights, and comprehensive immigration reform were all issues for which he was a champion.

Here are comments made by our elected officials who represent “Silicon Valley”: The Honorable Zoe Lofgren, (D, Congressional District 16, San Jose, CA) Chair, California Delegation to the House of Representatives, stated,“Our nation has lost one of its most outspoken voices for justice and equality. Senator Edward Kennedy was a champion for those who had no voice, and I join with my fellow Americans in mourning his passing. He leaves a lasting and enduring legacy, his work on civil rights, social justice, immigration reform, and health care access, will continue to inspire us as we work to make America a better place.”

California State Assembly member Joe Coto’s comment were “Senator Ted Kennedy was a larger than life figure in American politics. His passing should encourage all of us to reflect on his many accomplishments as Senator and leader. He fought for the young, the old, the sick, the poor, people struggling with disabilities, those denied the basic civil rights all Americans are entitled. At some of the nation’s most tragic and difficult moments, Ted Kennedy gathered his strength and focused his energy on developing a more hopeful future. As a nation and as a people, he encouraged us to build upon the inspirational leadership of his two brothers and use it to leave a legacy of social transformation which he was able to accomplish. May he rest in peace.”

A statement from Mayor Chuck Reed on the passing of Senator Edward Kennedy reads as follows: “Today, as the world mourns the death of Senator Edward Kennedy, I and the residents of San Jose want to share our condolences and prayers with his family. Senator Kennedy’s commitment to public service will be a lasting legacy and a model for others. Public service for Senator Kennedy was a way of life, and his commitment continued even through his final difficulties. Here in San Jose, we remember his work with Cesar Chavez and his commitment to help those in need. In 1980 he said the following,“Programs may sometimes become obsolete, but the ideal of fairness always endures. Circumstances may change, but the work of compassion must continue.” These words endure today and provide solid guidance to those who serve the public.”

The President of the National Hispanic University located in San Jose, CA, Dr. David Lopez, made the following statement: “Senator Kennedy and the Kennedy family have all been “warriors” or ‘guerreros’ for the working class and people. Senator Kennedy, as the rest of his family, have always championed educational and social access as well as equality for Latinos and others. May he and his other great family members that have sacrificed unselfishly rest in eternal peace. We all must strive to keep the American Dream and the flame alive.”

Now that our‘Liberal Lion’has passed on, it seems that as a Latino community acting collectively and individually, we must act in our own self interest by registering to vote, learning about the issues, and then voting in our own best interests. There will be three very important elections. One election on November 3, 2009; a gubernatorial primary election during June 2010; and an election during November 2010. Our votes may be individual and private, but collectively they will count. When counted, as Latinos we will responsibly experience our collective power and influence in this American nation. We must all strive to be engaged and involved because together we are a positive force which keeps the American Dream Alive. In honor of Senator Ted Kennedy, we Latinos must become responsible and engaged as citizens and as a people. So let’s do just that. (Read more comments on www. el-observador.com)

I

t was interesting to hear the commentary of the panel composed of Josue Garcia, Building & Construction Trades Council, Pedro Espinoza of the Mexican Consulate, San Jose and Lorraine Garcia, United Food Commercial Workers Service Union with moderator Damien Trujillo on the Comunidad del Valle program of Sunday, August 23, 2009. The theme being addressed is the coming National Labor Rights Week of August 31 to September 4, 2009 which precedes the coming national Labor Day Holiday.

Their comments focused mainly on the monitoring and enforcement of ensuring laboring peoples prevailing wages; maintaining safe working conditions; providing rest periods (at least a 15 minute break every two hours; bathroom breaks, a reasonable lunch hour period, and no verbal, physical or sexual harassment. These are all items leading to the respectful treatment of honest laboring folks.

But there is a serious concern which was not addressed at all. We must remember those who are without work; who suffer from want and anxiety from lack of work. We must ask the leaders of our nation to use our public and private wealth in a manner that all may find suitable and fulfilling employment and receive just payment for their labors.

We, as a laboring community, have not discussed the reality that as corporate business leaders invest in automation, cybernetics, and robotics, the production of goods can be increased without the employment of additional labor. Do recall those video clips of

auto assembly lines where robots do the welding. This automation has eliminated jobs and reduced labor expenses because robots do not require rest periods (other than maintenance and calibration downtime), retirement funds and medical insurance. We must take note of the business reports which reveal that production is rising while employment is declining as an outcome of the use of robots.

It is these trends projected into the future which must be analyzed and discussed from the perspective of laboring communities. If future information and technical developments lead to fewer jobs, then the question that must be addressed is “How will individuals be able to earn a living without a traditional job? The question that follows is “How will a couple earn enough to support a family?” Relying on big government to tax very rich individuals and corporations in order to distribute those tax revenues as ‘unemployment benefits’ or ‘welfare benefits’ is already being resisted by many policy makers, especially those of the Republican Party whose mantra seems to be “Reduce Taxes” in order to stimulate business.

It seems to me that a nation with as many resources as America already has, can and must address the challenges which lead to a fair and humane distribution of wealth for all to afford a home, basic universal health care, appropriate nutrition, recreation and necessary training and vocational skills for self improvement. Can we initiate a local discussion on this very important concern soon so that we continue to generate ap-

propriate public policy and related standards which apply to all of us fairly?

My observations are that those who have, are in a position to get more! How can the American Dream be sustained in a business as usual climate which favors ‘The Haves’ and presents almost insurmountable challenges to the ‘Have-Nots’? We are already discussing the public policy about ‘Universal Health Care’ which contains a public option and experiencing the many misrepresentations made by those who fear change. The creation of jobs for people has become very important. If the powerful American Consumer Economy is to be reestablished, then it must be the concerned responsibility of businesses (corporations) which are located in our communities to sustain jobs for workers who are essential to maintaining the American Consumer Economy. People need jobs and current technology seems to be eliminating those jobs. Let’s participate in an analysis of this process so that cybernetics, robotics, and automation are used to the benefit of all of us and not just those who already have enough. This is a challenge that must be addressed collaboratively by Labor leaders, business leaders, and our elected officials. The goal is to use our national resources for the benefit of all of us.

I suggest that National Labor Rights Week is the time to begin this analysis and discussion with all stakeholders included and involved.

It seems to me that Labor does have a right to have access to a job which permits the individual to earn his/her way to their American Dream.Δ

s a hyper-partisan Congress and broadcast pundits blather incessantly about the economic meltdown and the plutocrats on Wall Street who perpetrated it by their fraudulent financial manipulations grab billions from taxpayers, working class Americans are losing their jobs, homes, health care, and hope for any secure retirement. Our nation faces diminished prospects for our children, grandchildren and generations to come.

Though some honest elected and appointed officials seek solutions to the pathetic state of our nation, financial corporate vultures insidiously circle the meltdown with keen eyes on evermore opportunities to transmogrify defaulting home loans and 401K retirement and other investment accounts in free fall into opportunities for their multimillion dollar bonuses.

It’s the Iron Law of Unregulated (read: lawless) Capitalism: for every loser there is a winner. In fact, for thousands of losers, those losing their jobs, their homes, their retirement savings, their so-called prudent/safe/conservative investments in the stock market of American free enterprise, there are handfuls of winners who are winning BIG. These winners are not just the bonus recipients of AIG recently laid bare by media, exposing the lifestyles of these rich who did not want to be famous in their excess. No, the really big winners have been with us all along, called the Masters of the Universe, who’s Wall Street “financial paper” exploits netted them millions per year, billions for really big players such are Robert Rubin and Henry Paulson. These Masters, so-called self-made billionaires, were the foxes let into the henhouse as Clinton’s and George W.’s Treasury Secretaries, where they sharpened their expertise on how to turn the American economy into a never empty piggy bank for their Wall Street ruling class.

Yet the most obvious solution to the meltdown has been on our horizon all along: fix the economy by serving human needs. Rather than give billions to shore up defaulting banks that instead of lending to employers to get Americans working again, are actually buying other banks in Europe and Asia.

We must spend our tax dollars on rebuilding our own civil society. How? At the end of World War II, when most of Europe was devastated by five years of the most destructive war in history, our nation created the Marshall Plan to rebuild the infrastructure of Europeans nations’ transportation, water, sewage, and power generation systems. Today America desperately needs its own Marshall Plan to rebuild our infrastructure which is in great disrepair, evidenced by preventable yearly disasters such as falling bridges, failing levees (remember New Orleans after Katrina?), and the shameful reality that we are the only developed nation on Earth without universal health care and preschool to graduate school education.

What keeps America in such a state of disrepair and inequity? A Congress with too many mini-demagogues more interested in remaining “in the game” by serial re-elections financed by industry lobbyists, rather than serving the public by actually solving our nation’s problems. What are your state and national representatives doing to fix our economy? Go ask them!

EL SUICIDIO, UNA MODA ENTRE ADOLESCENTES Por Rosario Vital El Observador

E

l pasado 5 de mayo un joven de 17 años de edad se suicidó en las vías del tren en la ciudad de Palo Alto. El 12 de junio otra joven de 17 años de edad también se suicidó en el mismo lugar. El 21 de agosto una adolescente de 13 años se suicidó nuevamente en el mismo lugar. Estos tres estudiantes pertenecen a la Escuela Secundaria Gunn de la ciudad de Palo Alto. ¿Qué está pasando entre los jóvenes?

En junio una madre salvó de morir a su hijo quien tenía todas las intenciones de suicidarse y gracias a la intervención el joven se encuentra en proceso de recuperación. Este estudiante es de la misma escuela secundaria. ¿Cuál es el problema en la escuela? ¿Qué pasa en la mente de los estudiantes? ¿Qué tanto podemos hacer los padres? ¿Es un pacto secreto entre los jóvenes? El Observador (EO) tuvo oportunidad de hablar con padres de familia de esta escuela pero no han querido ser identificados.

Todos afirman que la Escuela Secundaria Gunn una buena escuela y como tal es exigente, los muchachos llevan mucha tarea a casa.

“Si los estudiantes pertenecen a un grupo de exigencia excesivas.

Los jóvenes entre ellos entran en competencia y cada vez se exigen más, causando estrés”, indica el Dr. en Psicología Clínica Samuel Tabachnik.

El suicidio es la tercera causa de muerte entre los jóvenes adolescentes según indica la Asociación Americana de Suicidios. Un promedio de 33 mil personas mueren por suicidio en los Estados Unidos. A nivel local tres jóvenes se han suicidado y hubo un intento de suicidio en tan solo tres meses. ¿Cómo identificar a un joven con intentos de suicidios?

“Hay cambios en el comportamiento. Hay falta de apetito, hay problemas de alimentación, perdida de interés en cualquier tema, se retraen, se desconectan de su medio ambiente de las fuentes de conexión y cariño. Otras veces los jóvenes muestran exceso de emociones, llanto, preocupación, que-

El especialista en psicología también indica que muchos de estos jóvenes usan drogas, están descuidados en su aspecto personal así como otros tienden a vestirse solo de negro. Otro de los indicios es que los

jóvenes se preocupan de la muerte.

Rising Together

hen a society experiences harsh and difficult times, it is important for a community to unify and share resources so that no one struggles to get by.

Local artists Matt Gonzales and Diana Medrano put together an event on Saturday, August 22, that enabled community members to reach out to each other and share resources.

The event was called For the People, By the People! (Para la Gente, Por la Gente!).

“We wanted to do something different,” Medrano said. “We wanted to show that we were united.”

“We also want the people to know that we can all reach the top if we all worked together,” added Gonzales.

The event featured artists like Anabella Pinon, Ivan Gonzales and Miguel Verar.

“The artist will do some live painting, which in a way is the same as performing.” Medrano said.

Gonzales and his band, The Blank Manuscript, along with several DJ’s provided the musical entertainment.

Several non-profit organizations were also at the event and handed out information. These organizations included Cochilehautli, which provides services for immigrant student, and health services organizations that provided information

on health care.

“We also got Heart of Chaos to get involved with what we were trying to do,” Medrano said.

“They specialize in helping out troubled youth and introducing them to art.”

Despite the success of the event, the organizers said that putting together the event was not a simple task.

“The first thing we needed was funding,” Gonzales said. “Neither of us had ever done anything like this before, so this was definitely a learning experience. But once people knew what we were about and what we were trying to do, they got on board to be a part of this event.”

Gonzales and Medrano both said that they hoped those who attended had a positive experience at the event and with a sense of community.

“We want people to leave feeling inspired,” Medrano said. “We want them to want to create and to volunteer in their communities.”

Unified Artist’s next event will be held on October 31. The exact location of the event is to be determined, but Gonzales said that the event would have a Dia de los Muertos theme.

“We are starting to plan it now and it should be a successful event because we have more time and experience now when it comes to putting these sorts of events together,” Gonzales said.

Se vence plazo para reclamar reembolsos W

ASHINGTON - El tiempo se está terminando para muchas pequeñas empresas que deseen aprovechar la opción expandida de deducir pérdidas de negocio en años anteriores incluidas en la ley de recuperación de este año, señaló el Servicio de Impuestos Internos (IRS). Las personas elegibles tienen hasta el 15 de octubre para elegir esta opción expandida. Las corporaciones elegibles con año calendario tienen hasta el 15 de septiembre.

Esta disposición para pérdidas tomadas en años anteriores ofrece a pequeñas empresas que perdieron dinero en el 2008 una excelente manera de rápidamente obtener dinero en efectivo muy necesitado si tuvieron ganancias en años anteriores. Esta opción solo está disponible por un tiempo limitado, así es que las pequeñas empresas deben considerarla cuidadosamente y actuar antes de que sea demasiado tarde.

Bajo el Acta de Recuperación y Reinversión Americana (ARRA) promulgada en febrero, muchas pequeñas empresas cuyos gastos excedieron sus ingresos en el 2008 pueden elegir tomar las pérdidas resultantes hasta por cinco años en lugar de los dos años tradicionales. Esto significa que un negocio que haya tenido una pérdida neta de operación (NOL, por sus siglas en ingles), en el 2008 pudiera tomar tal pérdida en

años anteriores hasta el año tributario 2003, en lugar de solamente hasta el 2006. Esto significa no solo un reembolso tributario especial, pero el reembolso pudiese ser mayor, porque la pérdida se está distribuyendo entre hasta cinco años tributarios, en lugar de solo dos.

Bajo el ARRA, los contribuyentes elegibles pueden elegir deducir pérdidas NOL derivadas en un año tributario comenzando o finalizando en el 2008 por tres, cuatro o cinco años en lugar de dos. La opción está disponible para pequeñas empresas elegibles (ESB, en inglés) que tengan un promedio de no más de $15 millones en ingresos brutos por un período de tres años culminando con el año tributario del NOL. Esta opción puede hacerse solo para un año tributario.

Los individuos pueden acelerar un reembolso al presentar el Formulario 1045, “Application for Tentative Refund” (Solicitud por Reembolso Tentativo). Igualmente, corporaciones con NOL también pueden acelerar un reembolso usando el Formulario 1139, “Corporation Application for Tentative Refund” (Solicitud de Corporación para Reembolso Tentativo). Normalmente, los reembolsos son enviados dentro de 45 días. Estos formularios, junto con respuestas a preguntas frecuentes acerca de esta opción especial de deducir pérdidas en años anteriores, y otros detalles están disponibles en IRS.gov.

By Osvaldo Castillo El Observador “In order for a community to progress, the community needs to know and be proud of its roots, “ said San Jose artist Angel Luna, (A Tape Called Mex) Luna, along with Fernando J. Perez (DJ Tlacoyo) and Marcos S. Jimenez used this mindset to produce a video that features local San Jose musicians, and focuses on Latino music’s past, present and future. The title of the documentary is Musica Pop-bre.

“We wanted to make a documentary that showed how young Latino music had evolved in San Jose,” Perez said.

The video focuses on Latino Hip-Hop artists and punk rock bands.

“We wanted to unite these different artists and to show them that we are all the same regardless of our musical taste,” Luna said.

“Punk rock and Hip-Hop also follow the tradition folk music,” Jimenez said. “All three styles of music deal with politics and corruption. This music is blunt and can not be marketed because it belongs to us.”

The documentary features bands and artist like La Grita, La Plebe and Las Adelitas.

It also features Hernan Hernandez of Los Tigres del Norte.

“Hernan agreed to be in this video because he knew it was important that young Latinos need to know about Latin musicians in San Jose,” Luna said.

Funding for this movie was provided by a grant from 1st Act Silicon Valley and from Silicon Valley DeBug. The documentary also features Latino DJ’s from San Jose State’s KSJS. “KSJS promotes our culture,” Fernandez said. “The DJs do what they do, not to promote themselves, but to inform the community about what is out there. They are the real risk takers.”

The producers of the movie said that they hope to present their video in local high schools throughout San Jose.

“We want these kids to know that they are not alone,” Luna said. “We want them to know that there are other people out there that they can relate to.”

They also hope to be able to get the video available On Demand and showcase it at the up coming San Jose Mariachi Festival.

“We hope to get all the bands in the video to perform at the event also,” Luna said.

“Jamás me imaginé que iba a salir tan rápido”, dice el hombre que se desempeña como transportista y que aprovechó su único día de descanso para iniciar los trámites en su consulado. Así como Chávez otros 500 personas más recibieron una atención personalizada.

Para que todo esto se haga realidad el personal del Consulado de México de San José se movilizó desde las cinco de la mañana y otro grupo adelantó con un día previo para la instalación de todo el sistema computarizado que se exige para emitir los documentos.

El consulado móvil emite pasaportes y matrículas consulares y atiende a más de 600 personas cada vez que sale de San José. “En años anteriores se han hecho 11 consulados móviles ahora hacemos 18, esto es un gran esfuerzo”, dijo el Cónsul General de México en San José, David Figueroa.

Esta oficina consular tiene que servir a una comunidad gigantesca que incluye además del Condado de Santa Clara, cubre San Benito, Monterey y Santa Cruz, en los cuales se estima hay cerca de

660,000 mexicanos, provenientes en su mayoría de los estados de Michoacán, Jalisco, Guanajuato, Zacatecas y Oaxaca.

El Observador compartió una jornada laboral con todos las personas que hacen posible que estos consulados móviles tengan éxito. “Siendo las 8:15 de la mañana se entrega la primera matrícula consular”, anuncia satisfecho el Cónsul Figueroa.

Figueroa entregó de comienzo a fin a cada uno de sus connacionales los documentos que solicitaron y a su vez dio información y respondió a preguntas de los usuarios.

El pasado sábado 22 de agosto el consulado móvil se desplazó a King City, a unas dos horas de distancia de San José,

más o menos 108 millas de distancia. En ese consulado móvil fueron atendidas 600 personas quienes programaron sus citas previas llamadas telefónicas al 1-800 6394835 (línea gratuita). El consulado móvil llega a King City después de 5 años y tuvo lugar en la Escuela Intermedia Chalone Peaks localizada en el 667 Meyer St. de King City, zona muy céntrica permitiendo que algunos mexicanos llegaran caminando.

nte una audiencia de 400 invitados en el Club de Rotarios de San José, la Vocera de la Casa de Representantes, Congresista Nancy Pelosi habló sobre reforma de salud, inmigración y de su libro “Conoce tu Poder”.

Pelosi fue presentada por la Congresista Zoe Lofgren y respondió a dos preguntas básicas en relación a la reforma de salud.

Transcurrido el evento, El Observador único medio latino que tuvo acceso a este evento preguntó para cuándo una reforma migratoria. La Congresista dijo que “hasta que no se resuelva el Cuidado de Salud no se podrá tomar el asunto de inmigración”.

“La inmigración es una prioridad para nosotros, es algo que tenemos que hacerlo bajo prioridades como lo es la seguridad fronteriza, la aplicación de la ley, la reunificación familiar y legalización para todos lo que estén aquí.

Pelosi también habló de la contribución de los inmigrantes a los Estados Unidos. Ella dijo que los inmigrantes hace de los Estados Unidos un pais más unido gracias a su temperamento, a su determinación, esperanza de tener un futuro mejor, ellos vienen con el sueño americano y eso es este pais.

En referencia a su libro titulado “Conoce tu Poder” fue inspirado en su experiencia personal y demostrar que toda persona tiene poder para hacer grandes cambios.

Executive Director Marcela Davison Aviles introduced festival Artistic Director Linda Ronstadt and this year’s new guest performer, legendary singer and human rights activist Joan Baez. With great excitement, these two world famous musical divas who blend social activism into their music and public personas, announced other performers, including Carlos Santana, Los Lobos, Little Joe y La Familia, Mexico’s Queen of Mariachi Aida Cuevas, as well as Mariachi Cobre, Mariachi Los Camperos de Nati Cano, Mariachi Azteca, and Mariachi Tradicional de Nayarit.

Guerrero obtuvo su tercer título y ganó por unanimidad. A pesar que Klassen inició dominando el encuentro finalmente el boxeador latino tomó control de la situación.

he Verizon Wireless Copa Alianza will be kicking off it sixth consecutive season and will hold tournaments in the Bay area beginning August 22.

The tournament will be played over three consecutive weekends. The teams will be divided into eight groups of four. The tournament’s championship game will be held on Friday, September 4th, at Pal Stadium in San Jose.

A total of $5,000 in prizes will be awarded to the champion. The winning team will also represent the Bay Area in an exhibition match against Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles de Caliente, which will be played on Sunday, September 6, at Pal Stadium.

In addition, the El Sueno de Tu Vida national scouting program will be on hand in search of soccer talent within the U.S. Hispanic community. The program is part of a partnership between Alianza de Futbol Hispano, Fox Sports en Espanol, and Sears.

Last year, 18 players from around the country received formal tryout invitations from MLS and Mexican professional teams. Six of

the players thus far have signed professional contracts.

Alianza de Futbol Hispano was founded in 2004 and is dedicated to the support and development of amateur, Hispanic soccer in the United States. The organization has sponsored local, regional and national tournaments, and brings together and showcases the talents of Hispanic amateur players nationwide.

Alianza and its corporate partners reach out to a growing community of hundreds of thousands of Hispanic Soccer players and their families. The 2008 edition of the Alianza tournament had a total attendance of 115,000.

So far, 16 teams have advanced in this tournament, which continue this Saturday.

El Sueno de tu Vida will continue also this weekend at the Central Park Sports Complex in Fremont.

“Jose Manuel Abundis, representing Club Toluca, will be one scouts that will be present at this event,” said Joaquin Escoto of Alianza public relations department. “We also have visitors from Tigres, Santos y Chivas.

ith streets blocked off and people dancing to live salsa music, the Second Annual Salsa Festival was a celebration of local communities and businesses working for the greater good.

The event was held on Saturday August 22, at Alum Rock Avenue in San Jose, between White Road and Manning/Miller Avenues.

“This event is a chance for us to give back to a community that has given so much to us,” said Frank Cortez, a business owner in the Alum Rock District and one of the organizers of the event.

The Alum Rock Village Business Association and the San Jose Redevelopment Agency put the event together. Councilmember Nora Campos, District 5, and Supervisor Dave Cortese were in attendance.

“This festival would not have been possible without the leadership of all those involved,” Campos said.

“It is important to support local businesses in East San Jose.”
