munities' message is our values of peace, love and justice. We want our families to be treated with respect and dignity. Arizona's SB 1070 is opposite to these values.” Ali Rahnoma was also present at the event. “I think Arizona's SB1070 is an embarrassment to the state. The way I understand it, that the law is an act of desperation by the conservatives to unite their base of support since most of them have grown disenchanted with their political leadership,” Rahnoma said. “At the same time the SB1070 is showing the resiliency of families and community members who are protesting the new law- this is an example of the how the racist law is blowing up in the faces of those who authored it. Brian Helmle attended because he feels SB1070 picks up where HR4437 left off after the Gran Paro of 2006 defeated it by the movement for migrant workers' rights. “I think it is an attempt to make the lives of the hardest working and most exploited workers even harder,” Helmle said. “It pushes workers who are already forced to work under the table even deeper into the shadows of our society

communities.” Many who attended the event also said that they plan on boycotting products produced in Arizona and attractions located in the state. “I have always wanted to see the Grand Canyon, but as long as the state of Arizona has SB 1070 or any other racist or anti-immigrant law on the books, they will not be getting my tourism dollars,” Helmle said. “Especially when there is support for SB 1070 by white supremacist organizations like the Minutemen and the National Socialist Movement.” Aside from boycotting, many of those who attended said they would keep fighting against SB 1070. “To attend any event in San Jose that opposes Arizona's SB1070 is an acknowledgement of attacks on working people,” Rahnoma said. “I also feel that it's important to show that such laws will not be tolerated in San Jose, in case anyone has the idea of introducing them to California or any local government.”

Pundits Should Listen to Voters on Immigration

problem of illegal immigration solved and want a national solution instead of a state-by state approach. A number of recent surveys have shown that while the Arizona immigration law is popular, comprehensive immigration reform enjoys even wider support. Bi-partisan nationwide polling conducted by Lake Research Partners and Public Opinion Strategies found that 60% of voters support the Arizona law with 23% opposed. This support for Arizona's SB1070 reflects people's frustration over Washington's failure to act on immigration reform. Even more voters-78%--support federal, comprehensive immigration reform. Notably, 84% of those who support the Arizona law also support comprehensive immigration reform, and by a margin of 60% to 18%, voters want the federal government to act instead of letting the states decide. 路 Republicans in Washington have formed a wall of resistance to working on immigration reform, leaving states like Arizona floundering under the weight of a problem that must be solved at the national level. While some Republicans are calling on the Obama Administration to "make immigration reform a priority" following the judge's decision, the fact is these same politicians have done nothing to advance the issue this year, and even refused to work with Democrats on a reform proposal this spring 路 Latino voters are re-engaged and energized by immigration. While conventional wisdom has it that western Democrats in close races have the most to "lose" from the court's ruling, the exact opposite is true. Conservative voters were already motivated to turn out and vote against Democrats this cycle. It is the Democratic base, including the crucial Latino voter group, that needed a reason to show up. ashington, DC - News coverage of this week's ruling on the Arizona anti-immigrant law is re-igniting the debate over comprehensive immigration reform and the need for a federal solution. But as Washington pundits analyze the political implications of the judge's decision, they are turning to outdated thinking instead of real facts from real elections. Conventional wisdom in Washington has it that the Obama Administration's lawsuit, and success this week in court, will hurt congressional Democrats in swing districts and help Republicans mobilize their base. Once again, these experts prove that they have a superficial understanding of the politics of immigration. According to Frank Sharry, Executive Director of America's Voice, "The Arizona law and Wednesday's ruling only heightens the public's desire for a federal immigration solution. While polls show the Arizona law is popular with voters, these same surveys show comprehensive immigration reform is even more popular. The public is hungry for leaders in Washington to solve this problem, and they will reward politicians who cut through the rhetoric to offer real solutions." Some points to consider about the politics of immigration: 路 Conventional wisdom has consistently been wrong: While running on a hard-line immigration stance may work in some Republican primaries, it has not proven to be successful in the vast majority of general election campaigns. Polling in swing districts and states consistently shows that comprehensive immigration reform is supported by a majority of voters because it is a practical solution that increases the tax base and restores order to the system. 路 The American people have complex views on immigration, and support pragmatic approaches to fixing the problem: Voters want the

udge LaDoris H. Cordell (ret.) as pictured above, has been on the job for a bit more than 50 days as the new Independent Police Auditor (IPA), City of San Jose. EL OBSERVADOR had an exclusive and extensive discussion about priorities and strategies with her this past Tuesday. These are definitely community oriented, with the focus on the need to engage and involve the youth of our community, especially the ethnic communities. It was distressing to be informed that Anglosaxon men, African Americans, Asian Americans, and one Latina had applied for membership to the Independent Police Auditor Advisory Committee (IPAAC). Its purpose is to provide community input and favor plans with cultural and ethnic sensitivity and values. "Where are the Latinos?'asked Judge Cordell. "I am aware that Juvenile Hall and the jails have at least 65% Latino occupancy. Where are the interested and engaged Latinos needed to formulate public policy and establish approaches and priorities which are acceptable to the very large resident Hispanic community now residing in San Jose?" All need to understand that the IPA is the appointing authority, which also includes the authority to dismiss. If you want to be an involved social change agent, here is an opportunity to begin to do something about the concerns that will create the future social order desired in this community. Be informed that Judge Cordell is thoughtfully proactive in a very logical and thorough manner. Application forms for the IPAAC appointment can be downloaded from the IPA web site (www.sanjoseca.gov/ipa/). As El Observador's publisher, I agreed to do something about the underrepresentation of Latinos in the IPA.s Advisory Committee which will meet four times per year to review, monitor, ad-

dress, be informed, establish priorities, and learn about the behavioral incidents which provide so many of Latino youth with their first police encounter. Two year terms and an embargo agreement (to practice total confidentiality) are required. You are encouraged to apply and serve because you will experience and learn much from a very distinguished and respected individual who is totally committed to public service. In her first 50 days, Judge Cordell has been to many community meetings throughout the city to inform the public that one does not have to have an encounter with the police to have a reason to present a 'concern' which will be investigated by San Jose's new IPA. New pamphlets (in English and Spanish) are already prepared; wrist bands with the IPA phone number are available; and flyers are already prepared and available. The I.P.A. office is easy to access in downtown San Jose. Its address is 75 East Santa Clara Street (at Second Street); Suite P-93 (lower level); San Jose, CA 95113, Phone 408-794-6226; FAX 9771053; and the receptionist is a Latina who is bilingual (English and Spanish languages). Staff have been oriented to a new approach which is designed to communicate concerns; to present constructive commentary rather than criticism; to establish a community relationship through collaboration and cooperation as an ongoing effort to maintain peace and tranquility in San Jose's diverse community....especially the ethnic communities of Vietnamese and Hispanics. The new IPA favors having individuals with complaints to meet face to face with the police personnel involved. Judge Cordell has experienced that approach leads to successful communication and resolution of issues while establishing communication channels coupled with trust. It was very interesting that the City Council agenda of Tuesday, August 3, 2010 had item 2.8 Outside Employment Approval process. The Mayor and City Council members avoided practicing a double standard when the resolution "to delegate to the Mayor the authority to approve, after consultation with the City Attorney, requests by the IPA to engage in outside employment providing mediation services." This Agenda item 2.8 was approved by a vote of 9 ayes and 2 nayes (Nora Campos and Pete Constant were the 'no' votes.). Remember that Hispanics are being sought to serve on the IPAAC as you read this article. I.P.A. FRIDA IMPACT By Osvaldo Castillo - El Observador

F

rida Kahlo is one of Mexico's most recognized and influential artists whose work has been celebrated by many throughout the world. On Friday, July 30, MAIZ and Cihuatl Tlatocan hosted the 5th annual Frida celebration at Washington United Youth Center in San Jose. Hundreds of Frida's admirers attended the event. "To me, Frida is a symbol of struggle and finding one's inner self about what a woman is," said Jessica Castaneda from San Jose. Castaneda was on hand to help out with the Frida look-a-like contest, one of several activities for individuals to participate in. Other activities included musical performances, dances, and a silent action. "The works of art for this auction were donated from local artists and we have over 60 pieces from throughout California," said Marisol Solorio of Maiz. "It's nice to see the different perspectives on Frida.” The goal of the event was to raise $5,000 to help women who have left a domestic violence situation. "The money will help these women get back on their feet after all they have been through," said Lydia Martinez of Cihuatl Tlatocan. "These women will also learn about the many resources that are available to them." Frida Kahlo was born in Coyoacan, Mexico

in 1907. Perhaps best known for her self-portraits, Kahlo's work is remembered for its "pain and passion," and its intense, vibrant colors. Her work has been celebrated in Mexico as emblematic of national and indigenous tradition, and by feminists for its uncompromising depiction of the female experience and form. Kahlo had a stormy but passionate marriage with the prominent Mexican artist Diego Rivera. She suffered lifelong health problems, many of which stemmed from a traffic accident in her teenage years. These issues are reflected in her works, more than half of which are selfportraits of one sort or another. Kahlo suggested, "I paint myself because I am so often alone and because I am the subject I know best." MAIZ Mujeres created Cihuatl Tlatocan, a community organization based out of San Jose. The committee is comprised of multigenerational, bilingual and monolingual Mexican females. It began as a volunteer committee doing event production and is now a mass organization organizing to address the multiple oppressions that Mexican females face locally and globally. Its mission is to foster leadership to change the social conditions of Mexican Women using education, cultural, and community action. Silicon Valley Students Receive National Recognition as Outstanding Volunteers, Leaders

S

AN JOSE, CALIF. - Empowered with the knowledge that changing the world starts at home, 230 civic-minded high school juniors and seniors - including five from the Silicon Valley - have been selected as 2010 Bank of America Student Leaders for their leadership and passion for community service. As part of their award, the selected high school juniors and seniors headed to Washington, D.C. July 18-23, 2010 for the Bank of America Charitable Foundation's weeklong Student Leadership Summit. The summit aimed to inspire students, who are already answering the nation's call to service, to continue serving their communities and effect a lifetime of positive change. In addition to attending the summit, Student Leaders participate in eightweek nonprofit internships, paid for by Bank of America, at organizations in their local communities. Students gained hands-on experience and learned the finer points of nonprofit management and leadership while the nonprofit organizations benefit from the additional resources and support. Local Student Leaders are: · Vikram Kanth, a San Jose resident and rising senior at Lynbrook High School, is interning at the Silicon Valley Education Foundation. · Megan Lee, a San Jose resident and rising senior at Lynbrook High School, is interning at City Year. · Katia Licea, a San Jose resident and recent graduate of Willow Glen High School, is interning at the Silicon Valley Education Foundation. · Bridget McAnany, a San Jose resident and recent graduate of Archbishop Mitty High School, is interning at City Year. · Thuy-Khue Tran, a San Jose resident and recent graduate of San Jose High Academy, is interning at City Year. "At Bank of America, we strongly believe that an investment in future leaders plays a pivotal role in revitalizing our communities," said Raquel Gonzalez, Silicon Valley Market President, Bank of America. "Providing opportunities for our youth to be leaders in their communities today is important not only to our long-term success in the Silicon Valley but also as a nation and world. Through our

Neighborhood Excellence Initiative and our larger corporate social responsibility efforts, we're helping to create a culture of global service - one that benefits individuals, families, nonprofit organizations and the neighborhoods they serve." At the weeklong leadership summit, students learned how service benefits communities economically; how corporate, nonprofit and government collaboration is instrumental in community revitalization; and the important role that nonprofit organizations play as community anchors, particularly during times of economic stress. Through a series of interactive workshops and hands-on activities, the summit included educational seminars and the participation of several special guests. Highlights include: · Meetings on Capitol Hill to discuss important issues that impact young people such as lack of financial education in secondary schools and affordable opportunities for a post secondary education. · A financial education policy discussion, including panelists Michelle Greene, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Financial Education, Laura Levine, Executive Director for Jump$tart Coalition and Phil Martin, Assistant for Financial Education, US Dept of Education. · Leadership sessions that introduce business etiquette, identify personal strengths, develop future goals and identify opportunities for giving back to the community wherever they land. · A large-scale, environmental service learning volunteer activity with the National Park Service and the National Park Foundation at Fort Dupont in the Anacostia neighborhood to study the harmful environmental effects from everyday pollutants. The Student Leaders program is one component of Bank of America's signature philanthropic program, the Neighborhood Excellence Initiative. Since the program's inception in 2004, it has recognized and awarded more than 1,200 Student Leaders, many of whom have gone on to leadership positions at colleges and universities while continuing to lead civic engagement efforts. Breastfeeding Longer Creates a Stronger, Healthier Future for Mom and Baby

S

an Mateo, Calif. — San Mateo County Women Infants and Children (WIC) is launching an outreach campaign to encourage new mothers throughout San Mateo County to breastfeed longer. The campaign – which coincides with national breastfeeding month – will raise awareness about how “each additional month of breastfeeding creates a stronger, healthier future for mom and baby” and benefits the community. “The evidence for the health benefits of breastfeeding beyond the first few months is striking,” said Dr. Scott Morrow, San Mateo County Health Officer. “Breastfeeding for at least six months decreases the risk of childhood obesity, asthma, and diabetes. And extended breastfeeding has been shown to benefit the mom by lowering her risk for obesity and type 2 diabetes, post-partum depression, and breast, ovarian, and endometrial cancers.” “There is no question that breastfeeding works wonders for babies and for mom,” said Anne Garrett, R.N., supervisor of breastfeeding support services at WIC. “Babies need nothing but breast milk for the first six months of life; and breast milk remains an important part of baby’s nutrition when solids begin.” For more information about the benefits of breastfeeding longer, visit www.breastfeedingsanmateo.org or contact San Mateo County WIC at 1 (800) 205-0333.

Is Arthritis Turning the United States Into a Sick and Disabled Nation?

W

ASHINGTON, -- Arthritis is the single greatest cause of chronic pain and disability among Americans(i) and the treatment of arthritis costs the nation more than $128 billion(ii) a year in medical care and lost earnings. Persistent, chronic joint pain determines the choices people make and limits their ability to perform basic tasks for themselves and their family. Eighty percent of Americans either have, or know someone who has, arthritis(iii) and these numbers continue to escalate(iv). Women, African-Americans and Latinos are more disabled and have a greater incidence of co-morbid diseases as a result of arthritis than the rest of the population. The physical and economic burden of arthritic pain and disability is an important connecting thread in the dialogue about health disparities among women and racial/ethnic minorities, yet it is not being widely discussed. On September 2021, 2010 in Bethesda, MD, a first-of-its-kind National Summit, MOVEMENT IS LIFE: A National Dialogue on Arthritis, Musculoskeletal Health Disparities and the Health Of The Nation, will shine the spotlight on this national public health issue. More than 27 million Americans suffer from the most common form of arthritis, osteoarthritis (OA),(v) and almost 40 percent report activity and work limitations(vi). In April 2010, the CDC reported that severe joint pain, activity limitation and work limitation due to arthritis were significantly

higher among African-Americans and Latinos, even though they were less likely to report their medical condition.(vii) Various national health surveys demonstrate that women are also disproportionately affected by arthritis and related disability.(viii) "The compound effect of arthritis and chronic medical conditions among women and racial/ethnic minorities is a costly national health crisis," said Mary O'Connor, MD, Chair of the Department of Orthopaedics at Mayo Clinic Florida and Co-Chair of MOVEMENT IS LIFE. "Understanding the effect of arthritis on disability and physical inactivity is critical to effective chronic disease management in the United States." Led by Summit Co-Chairs Dr. O'Connor and Dr. Said Ibrahim, of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and Philadelphia VA Medical Center, MOVEMENT IS LIFE will feature discussion topics including the role of culture, social/psychological factors and the economic impact of musculoskeletal health disparities. Drs. Ibrahim and O'Connor will be joined by a consortium of stakeholders representing primary care physicians, orthopaedic surgeons, health advocacy organizations, community organizations, academia, faith-based leaders, community advocacy organizations, nurse associations and industry. Dr. Louis W. Sullivan, MD a nationally-recognized industry expert on health disparities and founding President of the Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, GA will deliver the keynote address. Δ

"Kick, Lead and Dream" By Rosario Vital El Observador

V

icente Cabrera, who is an 11-year-old boy, is celebrating one of his dreams. He is training to become a famous soccer player. He admires "Chicharito" – a Mexican national soccer player- and wants to be part of the professional soccer league. "I like to play soccer, I love to play soccer this is what I want in my life," said Cabrera, a student from Sunnyvale Middle School. Community Together For the fourth year in a row, police, teenagers and at-risk kids have come together for the wildly successful "Kick, Lead and Dream" soccer camp held at Cherry Chase School in Sunnyvale. The goal of the program is to help kids develop skills both on and off the field. As in past years it features drills, scrimmages, motivational speakers and the chance for high school students to volunteer their time for a proven cause. Due to the success of the program, the camp has grown to become a year-round program serving various communities within Santa Clara County. This two-week experience brought together Mountain View, Sunnyvale and Los Altos young soccer stars, Mountain View and Sunnyvale Police Officers, community volunteers and at-risk youth on the playing field to develop both soccer and life skills. The volunteer coaches for Kick, Lead, and Dream are 14 - 17 year-old male and female soccer stars from local area schools, including schools in Mountain View, Los Altos, Sunnyvale,

Cupertino and San Jose. The campers are at-risk 8-15 yearold boys and girls from various communities in the area. This year's program grew dramatically in size, with over 70 coaches and 220 campers. 95% of the kids who participate are Latino. "I like to help other kids. I work as a volunteer and I don't see this as a job. I enjoyed every single day with my team. We had fun and this is very nice," said Allie Gamble, who worked as a volunteer in this program and who studies at Crittenden Middle School. Akash Nigam, a Los Altos resident and Mountain View High School graduate first conceived "Kick, Lead, and Dream.” Following in his footsteps, Akash's sister, Sonia Nigam, a 15-yearold incoming sophomore at Mountain View high School, took over as the Camp Director this year. Senior Camp Leaders include Robby Gamble and Josh Luther. Junior Camp Leaders are Allie Gamble and Sonia Nigam. This initiative is backed by Kiwanis, the Mountain View- Los Altos (MVLA) Soccer Club and Kaiser Permanente. Mountain View Police Activities League's (MVPAL) and Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety (SVDPS) are the umbrella organizations behind the initiative. MVPAL and SVDPS are instrumental in procuring key resources, such as playing fields, and in leveraging their outreach programs to identify and recruit campers. Other sponsors include Google, YMCA, El Camino Hospital, Lucile Packard Children's hospital, Palo Alto Medical Foundation, Mesa de la Comunidad, Sonitrol, Trackle.com and All Star Soccer. Δ

Former Wells Fargo Bank Manager Pleads Guilty on Embezzling Case.

F

ollowing an investigation by the San Jose Police Department, the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office Elder Fraud Unit has issued a criminal complaint charging ex-Bank Manager John Tran, formerly of Wells Fargo Bank in San Jose, with several charges including Theft from an Elder, Grand Theft and Forgery. From March 2008 to February 2009, Tran was a manager at Wells Fargo Bank on Lincoln Avenue in San Jose. Tran befriended several elderly clients, and even made visits to their homes. Unbeknownst to the clients, in February 2009 his employment with the bank ceased, yet he continued visiting some of the bank's customers. In some instances, Tran convinced elderly customers to invest in certain CDs, only to pocket the money himself through an elaborate money-laundering scheme. In other instances, Tran forged signatures of bank customers, including recently deceased senior citizens, and simply drained their bank accounts. Tran is alleged to have structured over $900,000 in suspicious transactions. Tran was arrested on March 10, 2010. Anyone with information about this crime, or who thinks they might be a victim is requested to call Detective Leonard Lim of the San Jose Police Department's Financial Crimes Division at (408) 277-4521. On Friday, July 30, 2010, John Tran pleaded guilty to all charges in this case and agreed to a 6-year prison term in the California Department of Corrections. Tran also agreed to pay $553,000.00 in restitution to Wells Fargo Bank, as Wells Fargo Bank had previously reimbursed all of its customers who had been victims of Tran's scheme. Tran will formally be sentenced Tuesday, October 5, 2010.

Los Hijos del Maíz Por Rosario Vital El Observador (Reporte especial de Cuquio, Jalisco- Mexico)

A

A

Real Madrid won 3-2 against Club America on Wednesday, August 4, in San Francisco.

Real Madrid's midfielder debut a success By Cinthia Rodriguez - El Observador

A

friendly game between Real Madrid and Club America gave way to the arrival of midfielder Sergio Canales, who started his professional career with great success. "He's very young and has a lot to learn and growing up to do, but the quality is there and the most important thing in a player is the quality," said head coach Jose Mourinho. "It looks to me that he is very open and today without any kind of work, I just explained a few important things about the dynamic of the team and he did it." Canales, set up by Benzema, scored the first goal of the game at Candlestick Stadium in San Francisco. It came 11 minutes before half-time, but Enrique Esqueda scored at the 51 minute, tying the game for 9 minutes. Vicente Sanchez side-footed a goal on the hour and gave America the lead. "A game of soccer is played when the players aren't tired," said Mourinho. "In this game, Real Madrid played tired." Head coach Mourinho really liked the way his team played during the first half, everything went smooth. Overall he was happy with the results and likes playing against Mexican teams. He finds their plays positive; they don't lack

speed and are enthusiastic. "I like America because they're a team that has a different rhythm," said Mourinho. Club America is considered Mexico's most popular club when it comes to fan support, history and quality, with the largest stadium in Latin America and fifth in the world. "I'm happy because I've learned so much and I'm going to keep on training and learning and working hard," said Sergio Canales. With a debut hard to forget, Spanish midfielder Canales started his career with Racing Santander, but left the Primera Division side for Real Madrid, which proved to be an excellent choice for both. Although Real Madrid was missing internationals like Iker Casillas, Sergio Ramos, Alvaro Arbeloa, Raul Albiol and Xabi Alonso because of holiday leave after their World Cup victory, the team wasn't let down by Cristiano Ronaldo. Ronaldo's free-kick sealed the deal for Real Madrid, with a 3-2 win over America. "It's a pre-season game, we won, but we don't want to win pre-season games," said Mourinho. "We want to win season games." America also lost to Manchester City last week on penalty kicks in Atlanta after playing a 1-1 tie in regulation.

C

Flipped

W

hen second-graders Bryce and Juli first meet, Juli knows it's love. Bryce isn't so sure. Beginning that day, and for the next six years, young Bryce (Callan McAuliffe) does everything he can to keep his outspoken wannabe girlfriend at arm's length...which isn't easy since they go to the same school and live across the street from each other. Smart, dreamy, independent and willing to stand up for what she believes in, Juli (Madeline Carroll) is different from anyone else he knows and, frankly, it's a little overwhelming. What's a guy supposed to do when a girl tells him his hair smells like watermelon

or wants him to sit in a tree for the spectacular view? There's just no telling what Juli will do next, and Bryce is one guy who'd rather be safe than sorry. Though disappointed by Bryce's unwillingness to see things her way, or even to see the things in life she finds most meaningful, Juli continues to give her potential dreamboat the benefit of the doubt. Until those doubts stack up so high that she finally thinks maybe she was wrong about him. It's just about the same time Bryce starts to think maybe he was wrong about her, too. But is he too late?. Eat Pray Love

L
