Los latinos sienten el "ardor" como todo el mundo Por Senador Robert Menéndez

odo tema es importante para los latinos, y ya es hora que los latinos tomen su muy merecida posición en el debate sobre el cambio climático. Con las negociaciones en Copenhague comenzando esta semana, los latinos pueden ayudar que la respuesta global al cambio climático gane impulso y velocidad. Por mucho tiempo, los americanos han creído que los latinos sólo se preocupan por temas en específico como la reforma migratoria, pero - como todos los demás - los latinos son parte de la comunidad global. Los latinos están participando en todos los temas importantes. Entienden la importancia de fomentar el uso de energía renovable y sostenible. Reduciendo nuestra dependencia en petróleo creará empleos verdes- que nuestro país y nuestras comunidades necesitan desesperadamente. Tenemos tanto como, sino más, en juego sobre los temas del medio ambiente como cualquier otro grupo demográfico en los Estados Unidos El Sierra Club encontró que el 80 por ciento de los votantes latinos piensan que los temas de energía y medio ambiente tienen un impacto sobre sus vidas y la de sus familiares. Es por eso que los latinos, ahora más que nunca, deben participar del debate. La amenaza a nuestro planeta es real; y la oportunidad de conocer los desafíos tomar las responsabilidades - no solo para las generaciones futuras pero para los millones de americanos que buscan trabajo- también es real. Los empleos "verdes" que nacerán de la nueva economía verde del siglo 21 será la clave de nuestro crecimiento económico. Los latinos tienen que saber que el cambio de los Estados Unidos a una economía nueva, sostenible, y "verde" beneficiará a todos - especialmente a los jóvenes latinos que buscan no solo un trabajo, sino una carrera. Una economía verde crearía millones de trabajos nuevos y oportunidades nuevas en áreas de energía solar y de viento, modernización de viviendas, y el desarrollo de nuevas tecnologías y productos. Los latinos tienen que tomar su lugar en la mesa de negociación en el debate sobre el cambio climático y reconocer la oportunidad de a una economía que reducirá nuestra dependencia en el petróleo extranjero, crearía nuevos empleos, y salvaría nuestro planeta. ¿Cómo no van a ser parte de ese debate? La creación de empleos debe llegar a los negros y latinos desempleados

l Presidente Obama dice que está abierto a nuevas ideas sobre cómo abordar la crisis de empleos, sin embargo parece que ya ha tomado una decisión. En la Cumbre del Empleo que se realizó en la Casa Blanca el 3 de diciembre, el Presidente dejó muy claro que su administración ha hecho todo lo que se puede hacer. Ahora le toca al sector privado dirigir la economía a la meta final de la recuperación. Las últimas cifras de desempleo no dejan de ser un contundente recordatorio de que el Presidente y el Congreso aún tienen muchos asuntos pendientes. El desempleo ronda por el 10% a nivel nacional, pero ha llegado hasta el 12.7% para los latinos y el 15.6% para los negros. De hecho, durante más de nueve meses, el desempleo de dos dígitos ha sido la realidad para los latinos y los negros. A pesar de las anteriores disparidades en la falta de empleo, muchas comunidades de minorías no se han beneficiado equitativamente de la ayuda del gobierno. En una encuesta reciente, menos del 30% de los latinos dice ver los efectos de la Ley de Recuperación y Reinversión de Estados Unidos en sus comunidades. Es obvio que la ayuda no ha llegado a algunos de los trabajadores y familias más afectados. A menos de que los formuladores de políticas presten mayor atención a la equidad y justicia mediante la creación de puestos de trabajo específicos, es poco probable que el empleo llegue a estos trabajadores y familias. Para poder satisfacer una mayor demanda de sus comunidades, estos grupos necesitan préstamos asequibles y asistencia técnica para mejorar sus instalaciones y su equipo. Se debería alentar a las instituciones de crédito para que dirijan el 20% de sus préstamos a estas organizaciones, y les proporcionen planificación financiera, gestión y servicios de reestructuración de préstamos. OUTRAGEOUS TRAGIC BEHAVIOR

HE community has experienced several examples of outrageous tragic behavior. The most recent is an innocent slumber party attended by three girls which resulted in the death of one teenage girl who allegedly consumed too much alcohol. In due course, this tragic loss of life will be verified by an autopsy by the CoronerMedical Examiner. What youth need to know is that alcohol, especially absolute alcohol (100%) is a dehydrating agent that damages vital organs such as the liver, kidneys and brain. A dehydrated brain will not function properly, so if vital functions are impaired, the afflicted individual dies. Throughout the years past, there have been reports of youth dying because of 'binge drinking'. Responsible parents must instruct their kids to never binge drink at all. Moderate amounts of alcohol are useful during social events because 'social drinking' seems to facilitate the conversations that occur in such settings. A second outrageous event occurred when a group of boys stabbed to death another boy in the back yard of his own home. Since when does stabbing a person solve a dispute? When will the use violence to solve disputes stop? Yet, another young life wasted. A third outrageous event occurred on October 31st (Halloween) when two youths who were in their neighborhood "trick or treating" were assaulted with the outcome that one was shot in the head and the second stabbed. From the news reports this attack was unprovoked, but nevertheless may result in serious impairment or a tragic death. There seems to be no reason behind these three tragic events. Do they indicate the outcome of a new social reality? Is there a need for both parents to work in order to earn enough money to pay the family bills. When this reality occurs what is sacrificed is the ability of having a 'stay-at-home' parent, usually the mother. What developing youth need most as they grow up is the guidance of a responsible parent who teaches the child values, social skills, and acceptable personal behavior. One lesson is that disputes are not settled by violence. There are rewards for positive behavior patterns and consequences for negative behaviors which result in damage to property and injury to other individuals. Parents are held responsible for the actions of minor children under their care. Yet too many

times, agencies intervene with the parenting efforts being applied because these efforts are deemed to be 'child abuse'. In addition, many school teachers are not willing to discipline a student after witnessing unacceptable behavior. Somehow, the ability of responsible parents, teachers, coaches, and other adults who deal with children have become handicapped by the prospect of being labeled as a 'child abuser'. Several generations ago, there existed the saying: "spare the rod, and spoil the child." Juvenile justice may have become too intrusive to the efforts of a responsible adult to discipline a child for that child's own developmental good. One may also wonder about the impact of TV violence and all that violence portrayed in many computer games. If it takes a village to raise a child, then our communities must begin to have forums which include representatives of families, civic leaders, police representatives, and religious leaders. Parents need a lot of help in properly training a developing child with current information about substance abuse, acceptable sexual behavior and teach acceptable parenting skills and responsibilities. It seems that our diverse society has forgotten and neglected to transfer to our youth the acceptable human behavior, accumulated over millenia of human development and incorporated into a variety of social cultures. Acceptable human behavior was defined by social codes and religious teachings which are not being communicated. There is a need to convey the outcomes of substance abuse and physical abuse. And youth must learn that there are consequences for behavior which causes injury and destruction. Growing up and staying alive and well are great outcomes for responsible and knowledgeable behavior. Where is the outrage in this community about all this evidence that we are not dealing with these issues effectively? Let's begin with parents who must know enough to always be vigilant about the potential dangers their developing child faces. Let's not assign the responsibility of acceptable behavior based on knowledgeable judgement to a child. It is outrageous for our community to be stoic about these events and their implications. It's outrageous behavior on the part of all involved.Δ

an Jose Mayor Chuck Reed had a vision when he came into office, and his vision, was "Green". It is no secret that many of the world's latest high tech innovations originate in Silicon Valley. Clean Tech innovation is the latest in world changing technologies and San Jose is at the fore-front of this transformation. "This Clean Tech wave is something we need to stay on top of," said Mayor Reed. "It only makes sense that the latest technologies in this field come out of Silicon Valley." On Friday, December 4, the San Jose held its annual Clean Tech Legislative Agenda Summit. The city announced partnerships with several local businesses and organizations, such as PG&E and the Silicon Valley Business Perspective, in ensuring that San Jose becomes the leader in the latest Clean Tech Technology. "This collaboration is needed to ensure we live in a clean environment," said Nancy McFadden, Senior Vice-President of Public Affairs for PG&E. "This collaboration will also help fix our economy by creating new jobs." McFadden also commended San Jose's Green Vision and what is has accomplished so far. "San Jose's Green Vision should be applied

not only statewide, but nationwide," McFadden said. Some of the Clean Tech technologies that the collaboration will continue to support and promote are zero-emission vehicles, which use alternative fuels that reduce the emission of greenhouse gases. Green Buildings also reduce

of the city's street lights with smart, zero emission lighting, ensure that 100 percent of public fleet vehicles run on alternative fuels and reduce per capita energy use by 50 percent. "The Green Vision will also help create 25,000 new jobs," Guardino said.

The activities took place in front of the Mexican Consulate of San Jose. The movement began in hopes of stopping the privatization of the electrical industry and to restore jobs and prevent future loss. The protestors report that over 40,000 people have already lost their jobs, and others are

The SWP normally accounts for between 10 -20 percent of the district's total water supplies. The initial five percent allocation would mean a delivery of only about 5,000 acre-feet in 2010, as opposed to the district's average delivery 60,000 acre-feet. While this allocation number could potentially increase, it's still the lowest alloca-

tion on record from DWR. The district's response to annual water shortages usually occurs in late spring when more reliable information becomes known about water supply conditions related to imported water allocations, Delta export restrictions, operations, and local supply yields. A time extension of the conservation resolution until late spring would align with a more complete picture of the 2010 water supply outlook and annual water supply decision-making.

he Santa Clara Valley Water District Board of Directors adopted a resolution continuing the call for 15 percent mandatory conservation through June of 2010. The board's original call for 15 percent mandatory conservation came last March after careful analysis of the county's water supply conditions and contingency planning to factor in the potential of additional years of drought. Santa Clara County residents answered that call by achieving an 18 percent reduction in water use. While the 2009 water supply condition has improved from the March 2009 forecast, overall conditions appear very similar to a year ago, and the drought could persist for a fourth year. To ensure adequate water will be available in 2010, staff recommended extending the conservation Resolution 0925 from December 31, 2009 to June 30, 2010. "We may have rain in our current forecast, but we are facing another season of water supply uncertainty," said Board Chair Sig Sanchez. "We want to send a consistent and strong message to the community that conservation is still needed." Despite recent rainfall, the water district's local reservoirs are at roughly 42% of capacity. When coupled with the Department of Water Resources (DWR) recent announcement that they will only be

losing their benefits and retirement funds. Women in Mexico City have begun a hunger strike in protest and the group wants to show their support by making more people aware of the situation. As people handled their consulate transactions, the San Jose group awaited Viridiana Sanchez, of the Mexican Consulate to receive a letter on behalf of the community. The letter was written to Mexican President Felipe Calderon and spoke

Durante los últimos 14 años VTA se ha unido con "Toys for Tots" del área del Condado de Santa Clara. Some will get warn clothing to help them get through the winter. Unfortunately, many will not receive anything at all. Thankfully, the Turning Wheels for Kids organization has made its mission to see that no child is without a present this holiday season. On Saturday, December 12, Turning Wheels for Kids will be giving

away 2,200 bikes to low-income families at The South Hall in downtown San Jose. "The bikes will be assembled and given out throughout the day," said Sue Runsvold, Founder and Chairman of Turning Wheels for Kids. "It's going to be like Santa's workshop in there." Aside from putting smiles on the faces of low-income children, Turning Wheels for Kids also feels that it is important to encourage kids to exercise. "Exercise is key to a child's development. We need to get them to like being outdoors now so that they continue to enjoy being outdoors when they are older," Runsvold said. "More

children are now obese and this could lead to serious diseases like diabetes. Instead of having their limbs amputated at 60 or 70 years of age due to diabetes, they could have them amputated at 30." Registration for the bicycles began in October and was full within eight hours. "We spread the word by emailing those who we had in our database and by having our partners email those they knew would need help," Runsvold said. "Our volunteers also helped by spreading the word." Over 700 volunteers (from corporate companies, non-profits, and area residents) will be at the event helping to build the bikes, but the organization

is still in need of more. The volunteers will be stationed at the table that morning and will be in charge of working with the bicycle count agents to ensure receiving charities are given the correct type and number of bicycles. They will also be in charge of greeting the agencies picking up bicycles and signing off on bikes. Though registration is full for this event, Turn Wheels for Kids gives out bicycles throughout the year. According to America's Second Harvest Food Bank, today an estimated 35.5 million Americans are food insecure; meaning their access to enough food is limited by a lack of money and other resources. This includes an esti-

mated 12.6 million children. Forty-nine percent of food stamp recipients are children, 40 percent of adults requesting assistance are employed, and 29 percent of seniors choose between food and healthcare.

pplied Materials held its third annual Solar Car Race on Wednesday December 8, in an effort to raise money for the Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo counties. The race is a friendly competition among Applied Materials employee teams assembling and racing miniature solar powered cars. "This event is one of the events that Applied Materials holds in order to raise money for those who are in need this holiday season," said Amaya Wiegert, public relations specialist for Applied Materials. Participants are allowed to "cheat" in order get their cars across the finish line. The teams can "cheat" by pushing their cars across the finish line. But teams have to pay a fine for each times it "cheats" or receive a penalty. There is also an entry fee. The track was originally going to be 50 feet long, but due to bad weather, the

track was shortened to 25 feet. "The contestants work hard on their cars for about two weeks," Wiegert said. One team member would be at the starting line in order to get the car going. Another would be at the finish line to catch the car. Teams were given an option of purchasing a head start of up to ten feet, with each foot costing 25 dollars. Every push to the car resulted in a fee of $25 and the car could not move more than three inches. Applied Materials held similar events throughout the country. The company's goal is to deliver 2 million meals to families. The company hopes to raise over a $1 million dollars and several pounds of food through this effort. "Last year we raised over $6,000 at this event here in this area," Wiegert said. "We are hoping to surpass that this year." The Solar Car Race is not the only event Applied materials holds in order take raise money for needy families. "We also have bake sales and arm wrestling competitions," Wiegert said.

Because of the Administration's stewardship of the TARP program - combined with our broader efforts to revive the economy - we now expect the cost to be at least $200 billion less than anticipated as recently as August. This includes: extending unemployment insurance for Americans who are struggling to find jobs, extending the Recovery Act provision that helps out-ofwork Americans keep their health insurance through COBRA, providing an additional $250 Economic Recovery Payment to our seniors and veterans, and taking steps to ensure that state and local governments are not forced to lay-off teachers, police officers and other key personnel at this critical time. These steps will build on the efforts that the Administration has already taken to accelerate the pace of job growth, including tax cuts for struggling businesses, an expanded homebuyer credit, additional unemployment insurance to one million Americans, and the Cash for Clunkers program. The Administration is also continuing to pursue efforts to increase the competitiveness of U.S. businesses and strengthen their capacity to export to overseas markets.

atthew Blea, 16, San Jose High Academy student who was injured during a Thanksgiving Day football game is now stable. On December 4, Dr. Marco Lee from Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, explained that Blea went from critical to serious condition and is making good process. "I know the road ahead is going to be tough, but I know he will pull through," said David Blea, father of Matthew Blea. The injured football player is making amazing improvement and will slowly get out of the coma that has helped him remain calm. Blea spoke to his father and even joked with him that day. "He actually whispered he loved me," said David Blea. Blea's father thanked all the nurses, doctors and the fire department that arrived on the day of his son's injury. He spoke about Matt's ability to keep on fighting, reflecting on his son's beginning as a premature baby. He also acknowledged the outreach of the community, the love and support the whole family is receiving. He admits it's a difficult time and insists that his son is a fighter.

AN FRANCISCO.-United Way's report, "Struggling to Make Ends Meet," reveals that Santa Clara County families require four fulltime, minimum wage jobs -- compared to three in other Bay Area counties -- to pay for basic necessities, when measured by the California SelfSufficiency Standard. The report indicates high school graduation continues to be a key indicator to achieving self-sufficiency. Nearly 61% of 39,477 Santa Clara County households headed by someone who did not complete high school have incomes below the Standard, compared to 10% of householders with a bachelor’s degree or at least some college. Based on the most recently available U.S. Census data from 2007, United Way's report, "Struggling to Make Ends Meet," shows that hard times preceded the recession for a significant number of Santa Clara County families. Even before the global economic crisis, having a job was not a guarantee of adequate income, as indicated by the fact that 87.2% of local households with incomes below the Standard had at least one worker. "Even this pre-recession data reinforces our focus on helping families achieve an income that provides for financial stability," said Carole Leigh Hutton, president and CEO, United Way Silicon Valley. While we will always offer and support programs that help feed and house families, our mission is to address the root problems that persist in creating these conditions. The access to services that 2-1-1 Santa Clara County offers, the financial stability assets like our “Bank on San Jose” and “Earn It! Keep It! Save It!” income tax assistance programs, and the programs offered by our partner agencies are working toward this outcome." Other key findings from the report: · Local families headed by single women are two and a half times more likely than two-parent households to have incomes below the Standard. · 32.3% of Latino households in the Santa Clara County have insufficient incomes to meet their essential needs as compared to 13.5% Whites. The Self-Sufficiency Standard, part of a state and national movement to reform the way poverty is measured and understood, measures the actual cost of living on a county-by-county basis, using the costs of housing, food and shelter, as well as the work-related costs of transportation, child care and taxes. The Standard represents a "bare-bones" budget that excludes common expenditures such as credit-card and loan payments, retirement savings, emergency expenses, and assumes that all adults in the household work to support their families. In contrast to the Self-Sufficiency Standard, the Federal Poverty Level, which identifies only 6.4% of Santa Clara County residents as poor, is based on the cost of food and does not take into account wide variations in the cost of living in different counties. The drive begins at the Peninsula Harley Davidson dealership in Redwood City and ends at the hospital, located on the corner of 39th Avenue and Edison Street in San Mateo (222 W. 39th Avenue). SMMC volunteers will welcome the riders and the public by hosting a reception beginning at 10 a.m. in the main hospital lobby. The riders are expected to arrive between 10:15 and 10:30 am. Refreshments will be served. At the reception, the Harley riders and other visitors will place their gifts under a Christmas tree decorated especially for this event. The gifts are later given to children in the hospital and in the medical center's community clinics throughout the county.

Suspect Arrested O

n Dec. 6, 2009, John Detches (32, a transient based in San Jose) was arrested for three counts of assault with intent to commit rape and one count of kidnapping in connection with a case from Nov. 29, 2009, and two other cases. On Nov. 29, a woman was attacked while jogging on the Stevens Creek Trail. She successfully fought him off and he fled on his bicycle. Responding officers were unable to locate the suspect at that time. The investigation revealed a suspicious circumstance that had occurred on the trail on Nov. 12, 2009, and was reported at that time. A 24 year-old female had been jogging on the trail when a male approached her. Officers had been unable to locate the subject and it was classified as a suspicious circumstance. In reviewing that incident, it was determined the description of the man and his clothing matched the description of the suspect in the case from Nov. 29th. Additionally, after seeing media reports regarding the attack, a woman in her 20s contacted the Mountain View Police Department (MVPD) to report that a similar incident had happened to her on Nov. 25th. In that case, a man matching the description of the suspect approached the female. After comparing the details of each incident, detectives believed one suspect was responsible for all three cases. On Dec. 2, 2009, two MVPD officers were patrolling the trail when they located a man who matched the descriptions given by all three victims. That man, John Detches, had a misdemeanor warrant for his arrest from another jurisdiction and was on parole for burglary. Detches was booked into the San Jose Main Jail and was initially given no bail. Women who believe they had suspicious contact with Detches anywhere on pedestrian/bike trails, whether or not they believe a crime actually occurred, should report that to incident to their local police department.

¿Por qué es milagrosa la Virgen de Guadalupe? Por Mario Jiménez Castillo El Observador

a veneración a la Virgen de Guadalupe, se ha convertido con el paso de los siglos, en todo un dogma inalterable de la fe católica. Sin embargo, existen personas que han puesto en duda que dichas apariciones sean reales. Hace unos años atrás el abad Guillermo Schulenburg, puso en duda las apariciones de la Virgen Morena y hasta intentó desacreditar la existencia del indio Juan Diego, enviando una carta al Vaticano para que se le pusiera un alto a su canonización. En aquel momento miles de sacerdotes, obispos y cardenales, se opusieron al abad, adjudicándole el nombre de "católico de pobre fe". La controversia surgió debido a unas pruebas que se le hicieron a la mantilla original, la cual según la historia, Juan Diego presentó como evidencia de las apariciones ante el poder eclesiástico. Uno de los investigadores puso en tela de juicio la autenticidad de la mantilla. Las apariciones de la Virgen María siempre han sido puestas en dudas, lo mismo sucedió en Fátima, Portugal y con la Virgen de Lourdes en Francia. La Virgen de Guadalupe se apareció por primera vez al indio Juan Diego, en el Cerrito del Tepeyac, el 9 de diciembre de 1531, pidiendo que en ese lugar se levantara un templo en su honor. El obispo de ese entonces, Fray Juan de Zumárraga, recibió la noticia con mucha reserva. Posteriormente el 12 de diciembre la

Virgen volvió a aparecerse y le pidió al indio que recogiera las rosas que brotarían en el cerro. Juan Diego las recogió, las colocó en su ayate y fue y las mostró al frayle como prueba de la aparición. Son también notables los santuarios a la Virgen de Guadalupe en Cáceres, España y en San Salvador, El Salvador,lugar en donde también se apreció la Virgen Morena en 1953, por lo que se le edificó una hermosa basílica. *Vale la pena mencionar que en España ya existía desde el siglo I la advocación a la Virgen de Guadalupe. Según la leyenda la imagen de la Virgen de Guadalupe que se encuentra en Extremadura se remonta al siglo I y se cree que fue esculpida por San Lucas. San Juan Diego fue finalmente canonizado en el año 2002 por el Papa Juan Pablo II, convirtiéndose así, en el primer Santo de origen indígena. El nombre de la advocación Guadalupe, proviene de la palabra nahuatl "Coatlaxope", que significa la que aplastó la serpiente. Con el paso del tiempo la palabra se castellanizó a Guadalupe. La Virgen Morena, La Sagrada Virgen de Guadalupe, es la Reina de México y Emperatriz de las Américas y las Islas Filipinas.

VICIOUS CIRCLE: UNA HISTORIA DE AMOR Y SUSPENSO Por Martín del Palacio ependiendo de la edad que tenga con quien uno platique, mencionar el nombre de Paul Rodríguez puede generar diferentes reacciones. Es que mientras los mayores de treinta identificarán de inmediato al simpático comediante nacido en Sinaloa, México, y criado en Estados Unidos, los que apenas estén saliendo de la adolescencia sabrán que ese es el auténtico nombre de P-Rod, una de las estrellas latinas del skateboarding que es lo suficientemente famoso como para que la marca Nike le haya puesto así a un modelo de calzado especialmente diseñado para los que practican ese deporte. Lo que no muchos saben es que los dos tienen una conexión tan estrecha como la que pueden tener un padre y un hijo. El padre fue un verdadero pionero de la televisión latina en inglés en Estados Unidos mientras que el hijo ya es un verdadero ícono para los jóvenes de hoy, un astro del skateboard que con solo quince años ganó una medalla de oro en la competencia callejera de los X Games,

transformándose en los cinco años que siguieron en uno de los rostros más reconocibles para los fanáticos de ese deporte. Lógicamente, cuando uno ve el nombre de Paul Rodríguez como protagonista absoluto de "Vicious Circle", la nueva película que ha lanzado la división de Home Entertainment de los estudios Maya, piensa que se trata del comediante. Lo cierto es que por el contrario, el filme marca el debut de Paul Rodriguez Jr. en el cine, después de un auspicioso paso por la televisión en un episodio de la difunta serie "The Brothers Garcia". Ceramic Sculptures by Pancho Jimenez

he Community School of Music and Arts (CSMA) at Finn Center in Mountain View presents Ceramic Sculptures by Francisco "Pancho" Jimenez. Works will be on exhibit in CSMA's Mohr Gallery until January 24, 2010, with an opening reception and artist talk on Friday, December 11, 6-8 pm. The exhibition will present recent works by the artist and will include a combination of freestanding, small tabletop, and wall-mounted sculptures. Jimenez's work takes inspiration from ancient art, much of it in ruins, found in Mexico and throughout the world. "Jimenez describes his work as "evolutionary rather than revolutionary." The catalyst that always propels his work is his desire to explore his primary medium, clay, in varied and technically challenging formats. "My use of organic and geometric motifs is rooted in my belief that these forms are a universal language linking the past and the future and cutting across cultures."

Francisco "Pancho" Jimenez holds an M.F.A. from San Francisco State University and a B.A. in studio art and history from Santa Clara University. He is a lecturer in the Art and Art History Department at Santa Clara University, where he is also the Faculty Director of the Unity Residential Learning Community. He also teaches ceramics at West Valley College. He has shown his work nationally in both solo and group exhibitions. Most recently, his work has been exhibited at the Pence Art Gallery, Davis, CA, as part of "Firing a Legacy, 35 Years of SFSU Ceramic Art." Other recent shows include exhibitions at the University of CA, Merced, CA, and the American Museum of Ceramic Arts, Pomona, CA. He has received numerous grants and awards for his art and his teaching. ive students from San Jose State University performed a mini series of plays at the Biblioteca Latinoamericana to a Spanish speaking only audience. The plays are a way of educating people about immigration. The students began with a daughter that gets separated from her mother, while two friends spoke about higher education and undocumented students. The students also talked about the rights of farm workers and immigrants in general. The different scenarios were of importance they offered a way of dealing with them. The actors explained what was going on and approached the situation with full confidence. The actors call themselves the "Nameless," in reference to not having social security numbers. They began working together in the summer of 2008 and continue to interview people to get ideas. The students' first play was based on the raids and eventually moved towards representing undocumented students and are even considering a short film. The next play will be in May, around Mother's day. The students would like to develop their material about mothers that are separated from their children.
