Cierre de otra década

l año 2010 cierra otra década en la humanidad. Ha sido un año bastante difícil para la economía de los Estados Unidos. La tierra del “sueño americano”, ha sido testigo del desempleo, embargos de casa, conflictos sociales y también desastres naturales. A nivel mundial hemos sido testigo de muchos desastres naturales, conflictos políticos que están afectando nuestra sociedad. A nivel local El Observador cumplió honrosamente sus 30 años al servicio de la comunidad latina, cubriendo y reportando eventos locales. Sin importar quien fue primero, nuestros lectores han seguido prefiriendo a un periódico que se mantiene semana a semana informando a su comunidad. Lo mejor de 2010 Los Californianos eligieron a Jerry Brown y no a Meg Whitman para la gobernatura de éste estado. El Censo desplegó una intensa campaña para contar a todos las personas que viven en Estados Unidos. La creación de Wikileaks puso al descu-

bierto los secretos de diferentes estados. A nivel internacional lo que todos creían imposible y que finalmente terminó siendo un milagro, fue el rescate de los 33 mineros en Chile. Los mineros permanecieron dos meses a 700 metros de profundidad. Por primera vez España obtiene el titulo en el mundial de fútbol 2010. La madre patria logra el triunfo y sorprendió a todo el mundo. Ricky Martin finalmente confirmó su opción sexual al admitir su homosexualidad. Vargas Llosa recibió el Premio Nobel de Literatura 2010, un orgullo de todos los peruanos y españoles. La mujer más bonita del universo vive en México. Se trata de Ximena Navarrete nacida en Guadalajara. Lo peor de 2010 El 20 de abril de 2010 se produjo la explosión y el incendio de la plataforma petrolífera Deepwater Horizon que se hundió el 22 de abril de 2010 provocando un derrame de petróleo incontrolado en el golfo de México que está causando enormes daños de complicada y lenta reparación. Bajo la administración de Barack Obama ya no es posible una reforma migratoria. Acabados los sueños del Dream Act,

también están fulminadas las esperanzas de una probable amnistía bajo su administración. Desempleo agravó más la situación financiera. A nivel internacional El sismo de gran magnitud jamás visto en la historia del mundo fue sufrido en Chile. 8,8 de magnitud devastó al país de América del Sur. Hirieron a un prometedor jugador de fútbol en la liga Mexicana. Salvador Cabañas quedó malogrado al recibir una bala en la cabeza, que lo puso al borde la muerte. Lo mejor de la década La red sociales como “Facebook” y “Twitter” han tenido un gran impacto en nuestras sociedades. Bueno o malo son los medios más rápidos y masivos de comunicación. En otro tema, todos los medios periódisticos reportaron la marcha del 1ero de Mayo organizada por los inmigrantes en el año 2006. Las portadas del New York Times, revistas como Time y la cadena de noticias CNN dieron una cobertura gigante a la histórica marcha que quedará guardada para todos, quienes fuimos testigo de la búsqueda de una reforma migratoria.

Un presidente de color asume el poder en los Estados Unidos el 2008. Lo peor de la década Después del ataque terrorista ocurrido el 11 de septiembre de 2001. Las medidas de seguridad se pusieron más estrictas en Estados Unidos. En marzo de 2003 EU invade Iraq. Tema que disgustó a la mayoría de estadounidenses. El desempleo ha ido cada vez de mal en peor. Un gran problema de recesión que concluye una década muy mala para EU. Miles de familias enfrentan embargos de sus viviendas. Las altas tasas de interés acabaron con los bosillos de sus propietarios. El huracán Katrina fue uno de los ciclones tropicales más mortíferos, destructivos y costosos que haya impactado a Estados Unidos en décadas. Katrina formó parte de la Temporada de huracanes en el Atlántico de 2005. Fue la tercera tormenta más poderosa de la temporada. En el mundo del espectáculo muchos fanáticos no se recuperan de la pérdida de Michael Jackson. Su súbita muerte dejó a muchos seguidores marcados por su ausencia. Δ

Los ladrones del Sueño Por Maribel Hastings America’s Voice ASHINGTON- A fines de 2009 dije que si en el 2010 no progresaba ninguna medida de alivio migratorio tendría que cerrar el año con una columna que usara el estribillo de un aguinaldo de Navidad puer torriqueño que dic e: “Todos los años vienen con la misma cosa”. Y eso fue lo que pasó el sábado en el Senado cuando cinco senadores demócratas y 36 republicanos, presentando las excusas de siempre, mataron las posibilidades de concretar el DREAM Act este año para cientos de miles de jóvenes indocumentados que sólo quieren estudiar, trabajar y servir en las Fuerzas Armadas. Se necesitaban 60 votos para cerrar el debate y proceder a la medida. Al final, 55 senadores votaron sí, pero no fue suficiente. Los tres republicanos que votaron a favor fueron Richard Lugar, de Indiana, Rober t Bennett, de Utah, y Lisa Murkowski, de Alaska. Los cinco demócratas que votaron en contra habrían hecho la diferencia. Sus nombres: Max Baucus y Jon Tester, de Montana, Ben Nelson, de Nebraska, Kay Hagan, de Carolina del Norte, y Mark Pryor, de Arkansas. Pero también la habrían hecho algunos de los republicanos que antes defendieron y auspiciaron la medida, pero que le han dado la espalda al plan y a sus principios. Uno de esos, el senador republicano de Carolina del Sur, Lindsey Graham, lanzó veneno desde el pleno. No fue sólo lo que dijo a los estudiantes sino cómo lo dijo: “A aquellos de ustedes que han venido a mi oficina, siempre son bienvenidos pero están perdiendo el tiempo. No vamos a aprobar el DREAM Act ni ningún otro programa de legalización, hasta que asegur emos las fronteras. Nunca se aprobará de manera independiente. Tiene que ser parte de una reforma migratoria integral”, afirmó Graham. No aclaró que él se ha dedicado a bloquear esa reforma porque como a otros de sus copartidarios, ni 400 mil deportaciones anuales ni nada de lo que se haga en la frontera será suficiente. Es más , algunos de esos r epublicanos que en el pasado defendieron el DREAM Act, ni estaban presentes

para votar en c ontra, como el senador de Utah, O rrin Hatch, quien ir ónicamente falt ó par a asistir a la gr a duación de su nieto. Hatch es uno de los r epublicanos que enfrentarían reelecciones complicadas en el año 2012 y vela por su futuro político sea como sea, aunque a su colega Lugar también podría surgirle competencia y sin embargo, mantuvo su apoyo al DREAM Act. Otros republicanos, que ni siquiera fueron electos sino designados, como George LeMieux, de Florida, velan por el futur o polític o que cr een que pueden t ener. LeMieux votó en contra y ni siquiera retorna al Senado en enero porque sólo llenó la vacante del cubanoamericano Mel Martínez, promotor de la reforma migratoria integral, cuando renunció al escaño en el 2009. Ese escaño lo ganó el republicano Marco Rubio. A todos les faltó lo que pidió el principal pr omotor del DREAM Act, el senador demócrata de Illinois, Richard Durbin: valentía. “Hoy no sólo est oy pidiendo un v oto por el DREA M Act… les estoy pidiendo mucho más: un voto de valentía política”, afirmó Durbin. Desconozco qué carta tratarán de jugar los republicanos para atraer a los votantes latinos en los c omicios presidenciales de 2012 tr as tanta retórica y animosidad en el tema migratorio y tanta saña contra jóvenes que no decidieron venir o permanecer en este país sin documentos. Desconozco si el “casi se pudo” de la administración será suficiente para mantener el mismo nivel de apoyo entre los votantes latinos. Sólo sé que en el nuevo Congreso en 2011 asumirán el control de la Cámara Baja los republicanos encabezados por líderes que han prometido hacerle la vida más difícil a la comunidad inmigrante del país. Cuarenta y un “Grinches” del Senado, 36 republicanos y cinco demócratas, que “un diciembre muy helado se sintieron muy malvados”, ya comenzaron a ayudarlos. Recuerde sus nombres. Happy New Year 2011 By Hilbert Morales

his is a very special New Year’s Eve 2011 because it is the end of a decade (2000-2010) plus the beginning of the next decade (2011-2020). The main happenings of the past decade were the terrorist attack of 9/11, the Iraqi war initiated using mis-information, and the recession which began with the fiscal collapse of Wall Street. A less visible process was the relocation of jobs to off-shore locales having lower labor costs; the erosion of the American consumer economy by the loss of millions of jobs coupled with the non-growth of the middle class wage earnings and the home mortgage crisis. Somehow, the influence of lobbyists and corporations needs to be curtailed because these special interests are now totally focused on profits without being responsible stewards of the local domestic economy. Beginning in 2011, public policy must be carefully monitored to ensure that education, health care, and social security are not compromised. Our elected officials must understand that all levels of government are over-spending too much. The result is a deficit at all levels of government. Not only must the national deficit be faced realistically, but also the deficits of state, local, and educational jurisdictions. This may require frugality which the public will easily accept, however, forced austerity is more unacceptable. Everyone must understand that our domestic economy must be rebuilt so that we all enjoy the profitable fruits of our creativity, skills and labor. California must strive for a sustainable economy that provides jobs for 95% or more of its labor force. America has a very high standard of living which is now being challenged by developing economies of China, Brazil, India, and Southeast Asia. These communities have benefitted from the extremely expensive world policing activities which America has borne since World War II. Many do not realize that the American military defense budget is greater than the combined military budgets of our allies. It is time to begin having others share their proper burden of maintaining world peace which is required, if we are to have a stable global economy. Just consider that in our local communities, no economic development occurs in those communities wherein conflict exists. Incoming CA Governor Jerry Brown is al-

ready ‘on the job’ learning about the deficit and considering sources of revenues. All entitlements and subsidies need to be examined in the light of the establishment of a sustainable economy which provides jobs, coupled with opportunity for our resident labor force. The High Speed Rail Authority needs to redefine its mission to the establishment of high speed rail service from San Diego north to Crescent City. An objective is to encourage the next 10 million residents to live in Northern CA whre there is more potable water and land at reasonable cost. This infrastructure element will serve to encourage economic development in areas north of Sacramento. Let’s address the system of justice, police and prisons which now incarcerate too many people of color. At least 80,000 individuals are being imprisoned for non-violent crimes. Developments in mental health, in electronic home surveillance, and in social and job training permit the release of these non-violent prisoners at a savings of $3.6 billion. The CA State prison guard unions cannot be permitted to lobby against these changes because of a basic conflict of interest. Health care and education programs may benefit from this approach. During 2011 Hispanics must be fairly and equitably represented by having four or five members of the CA Citizen’s Redistricting Commission. The data provided by the Census 2010 effort will be used by the CA Citizen’s Redistricting Commission to ‘draw the lines’ for congressional and state assembly districts. A New Year’s resolution must be to continually monitor redistricting efforts. Our representative democracy requires that each citizen’s vote have the equal influence and weight. At the national level it is essential to begin comprehensive immigration reform by passage of the Dream Act as a first step. Existing bipartisan support must act during 2011. A major New Year’s 2011 resolution is to become more actively engaged in the public policy formulation by elected officials. Where there is an evident conflict of interest, lobbyists must not be permitted to make influential campaign contributions. During the coming decade 2011-2020, the constituents have their work cut out for them at many levels. Let’s make a serious resolution to be engaged and involved.Δ

Nuevas leyes tendrán efecto el 1º de enero

ACRAMENTO – Varios proyectos de ley presentados por el Senador Leland Yee (D-San Francisco) tendrán efecto el 1 de enero del 2011.El Senador Leland Yee dijo que las leyes nuevas van a ayudar a los niños, van a traer más transparencia al gobierno, también protegerán a los consumidores, van a proteger el medio ambiente, y a mejorar la economía. Entre 14,500 y 17,500 víctimas son traficadas a los Estados Unidos cada año y esclavizadas para ser explotados de forma sexual o laboral. La ley SB 677, permitiría a los tribunales a confiscar cualquier propiedad, como una casa o un coche, que fue usado durante el tráfico de humano. La legislación también añade penas civiles de hasta $25,000. La SB 782 permitiría las víctimas a permanecer en sus hogares aunque reciban una orden de desahucio basado

principalmente en los actos de violencia doméstica, la agresión sexual, el acoso sexual. La ley nueva fue modelada por una ordenanza de San Francisco que fue aprobada en el2009. El Senador Yee dijo que la posibilidad del desalojo desanima a mujeres de presentarse ante la policía para reportar los incidentes de violencia doméstica y agresión sexual. Si una víctima quiere quedarse en su casa, debería de tener esa oportunidad y no deben de enfrentarse con una presión de mudar ni de la posibilidad de quedarse sin techo. Otra ley, es la SB 535, la cual daría acceso a los carriles a coches con dos o más pasajeros (carriles de HOV) para los vehículos de las cero emisiones de la generación más reciente, tal como los vehículos eléctricos y de hidrógeno híbridos – similar a un programa que antes permitió algunos vehículos híbridos el mismo acceso.

Específicamente, el SB 535 provee hasta 40,000 vehículos de tecnología avanzada, tal como coches híbridos de enchufe y coches de pilas de combustible hidrógeno, el acceso a los carriles de HOV durante las horas de conmutar empezando en 2012. Los individuos que compran tales vehículos en 2011 solicitarán para la etiqueta adhesiva nueva con el Departamento de Vehículos Motorizados. Además, la ley nueva daría acceso a todos los vehículos eléctricos por unos cuatros años adicionales y extendería el acceso a los coches híbridos básicos por unos seis meses adicionales – hasta los finales de junio del 2011. La SB 650 protege a los profesores y trabajadores en la Universidad de California (UC) quienes denuncian acciones ilegales hechas por la administración de la misma universidad.

La l e y proveerá las mismas protecciones legales que tienen todos los demás empleados estatales para empleados de la UC – incluso el derecho de demandar la universidad en los tribunales con respecto a quejas de represalias administrativas. La SB 438 es uno de los proyectos de ley más recientes presentado por el Senador Yee para proteger los derechos de la libertad de expresión y proteger los empleados de represalias injustas por defender los derechos estudiantiles. En 2006, el Senador Yee logró aprobar legislación que prohíbe los administradores de censurar la prensa estudiantil y protege estudiantes de ser disciplinados por expresarse o hacer actividad de la prensa. En 2008, puso en práctica otra ley para proteger los maestros y otros empelados en escuelas secundarias y universitarias de represalias administrativas por haber protegido la expresión estudiantil. Otros proyectos de ley que tendrán efecto incluye: * SB 888 permite la producción segura de noodles asiáticos. * SB 1116, cual el Senador Yee se unió con el Senador Bob Huff (R-Diamond Bar), requiere las escuelas culturales a seguir las leyes que apliquen a las esuelas privadas y guarderías. * SB 1333 requiere la facilitación cerca de aeropuertos ser garantizados más temprano durante el proceso de desarrollar propiedades para mejorar la

Improvements Project San Jose, Calif. – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), in cooperation with the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) and the City of San Jose, is proposing to modify the existing SR17/I-280/I-880, I280/Winchester Blvd., and I-880/Stevens Creek Blvd. interchanges in San Jose to improve operations and safety on the freeways and local roadways; improve access between the I280 and I-880 freeway corridors; and reduce traffic congestion and delay in the project area. The Draft Environmental Impact Report/Environmental Assessment (EIR/EA), outlining the effects this project may have on the environment, is now available to the public for review and comment from November 5 through January 3, 2011. The comment period has been extended to January 3, 2011. An environmental public hearing was held on Dec. 8, 2010; members of the public viewed project exhibits, discussed the Draft EIR/EA with project staff, and entered formal comments into the public record before the Final EIR/EA is prepared and the final design is selected. The public can review the Draft EIR/EA at the Caltrans District Office in Oakland. They can also review it at VTA’s Administrative Office in San Jose, the San Jose Public Library – Rose Garden Branch in San Jose, and the Santa Clara Public Library in Santa Clara. Caltrain to Test Weekend Baby Bullet Service

eginning Jan. 1, 2011, Caltrain will introduce weekend Baby Bullet service, a pilot project aimed at increasing revenue and ridership for the rail system. At its October meeting, the Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board adopted service reductions and fare increases to close a $2.3 million budget gap in the Caltrain Fiscal Year 2011 budget. At that same meeting, the Board authorized exploring ways to increase ridership and revenue, including a pilot project to operate express trains on the weekends, a proposal made by many members of the public during Caltrain budget meetings held throughout the community. “We listened to our customers,” said Mark Simon, Caltrain’s Executive Officer for Public Affairs. The pilot project is scheduled to be in place for three months, with an option to extend it. This is additional service – no trains or stops have been dropped from the weekend schedule. The schedule features one train in each direction in the morning and one train in each direction the evening – four trains in all. Each train will make seven stops between the terminals in San Francisco and San Jose –

Sunnyvale, Mountain View, Palo Alto, Redwood City, Hillsdale, San Mateo and Millbrae. The stops were chosen based on ridership, available connections to other transit and proximity to city centers, such as a major shopping center or downtown. Caltrain ridership statistics show that the majority of weekend customers are excursion riders headed to San Francisco, so there is a longer gap of time between the morning northbound express and the evening southbound express. Nonetheless, because the weekend schedule is unchanged, there are ample opportunities for customers to head home at their leisure on a non-express train. To keep costs as low as possible, the additional service will use one crew to operate all four trains. The service will be evaluated using customer surveys, ridership counts and ticket sales information. Caltrain is a proof-of-payment system and passengers are required to have valid tickets while onboard. odos tenemos horarios ocupados y puede ser un reto encontrar tiempo para estar juntos en familia. Pero pasar tiempo de calidad es importante porque cuando los padres aprenden y juegan con sus hijos todos los días, fortalece la autoestima de un niño y ayuda a desarrollar relaciones positivas. Sólo 10 a 30 minutos al día es un buen comienzo, siempre y cuando sea parte de una rutina regular. Los niños pequeños se beneficiarán del amor y la atención que reciben en estos momentos tan valiosos. Esta temporada de fiestas, FIRST 5 Santa Clara County anima a los

padres así como a los abuelos y los cuidadores para dar el regalo del tiempo de calidad. According to a new survey of office workers, sixtynine percent said they would be willing to sacrifice their preferred temperature in the office to help their company conserve energy. However the survey also found that nearly four in five participants (78 percent) say they are less productive at work when they are too hot or too cold. Johnson Controls (NYSE: JCI), the global leader in providing energy-efficiency solutions, commissioned a survey of nearly 800 American adults who work in an office setting regarding a variety of issues, including temperature, productivity and energy efficiency. The survey is part of the company's Efficiency Now campaign to build nationwide awareness of the importance of energy efficiency at work and at home. The good news: The findings indicate that many workers think their employers could be doing more to be energy-efficient. The challenge: Business owners must avoid a negative impact on office productivity and the possibility that workers may take action to circumvent their discomfort, including the use of portable heaters or fans, if temperatures are not ideal. "Employers may be tempted to turn down the thermostats this winter, but this quick fix could lead to hidden costs," said Clay Nesler, vice president of Global Energy and Sustainability, Johnson Controls. Recientemente ha inaugurado un restaurante llamado “Bistro Sabor” localizado en la 1126 First Street Napa, CA 94559. Amelia Ceja también se ha distinguido por combinar nuestras comidas y el buen vino. Desde un pozole, tamales hasta chilaquiles, todos estos platillos son una buena combinación con un vino en la mesa.

Camarones con cebollitas rojas y ajo Ingredientes: 3 libras camarones sin pelar (16-20 shrimp/pound) 8 cabezas de ajo finamente picadas 8 cebollitas rojas 1/3 taza de aceite de oliva + 1 cucharada 1 cdta. de pimienta 1 cdta. de sal ? limón

Preparación (Para 8 personas) Enjuagar los camarones por agua helada. Secar con un paño limpio y cortarlo por la mitad longitudinalmente y ponerlo en un tazón de vidrio . Mezcle ajo, la cebollita con el 1 / 3 taza de aceite de oliva y sal. Revuelva la mezcla en los camarones por completo. Agregar la pimienta a la mezcla de camarones y mezclar bien. Refrigera durante 1 hora. Añadir una cucharada de aceite de oliva en una sartén antiadherente a fuego medio y de alta temperatura agregue la mezcla de camarones y saltee hasta que los camarones se vuelvan rosa (unos 3 minutos). Exprima el jugo de limón y revolver, sirva de inmediato. Se recomienda combinar este platillo con Ceja Carneros Chardonnay y Ceja Carneros Pinot Noir. l 2011 será un año que llamará la atención por los conflictos internacionales, muchos países estarán en pugna aunque esto no desencadenará nada más que ataques verbales y conflictos diplomáticos sin consecuencias graves que lamentar. Extremistas del medio oriente intentarán atacar nuevamente posesiones de Estados Unidos y sus aliados. Desdichadamente los terremotos y las inundaciones volverán a sacudir el planeta en los primeros meses del año y se hablará otra vez de grandes cifras de damnificados. La temporada de huracanes será más pasiva que en años anteriores. La actividad volcánica retornará con fuerza en varias regiones del planeta, volcanes que habían permanecido inactivos volverán a tener actividad en Asia, Europa y América. Indudablemente el tema que tendrá a todos pendientes será la economía, en los primeros seis meses del año habrá señales de recuperación, pero de agosto a diciembre la situación será muy incierta y el desempleo marcará cifras

record a nivel mundial en ese período. Varios países de Europa entre ellos Grecia, vivirán una época de gran austeridad. En Estados Unidos se seguirá hablando de una reforma migratoria, pero esto quedará allí “solamente en pláticas”, lastimosamente no se hará nada relevante al respecto. Aunque sí se estudiará la opción de otorgar un permiso de protección temporal a los inmigrantes mexicanos debido a la violencia que azota a algunas regiones del país azteca. ‘Ojalá y esto se logre con prontitud’. Países como China, India, Rusia y Brasil ampliarán sus mercados y se notará cada vez más su presencia especialmente en naciones de Asia y América latina. Australia también se prepara para alinearse en un futuro como una potencia mundial. En varios países hispanos la violencia irá en aumento y ni los cuerpos de seguridad ni el ejército serán suficientes para combatir la delincuencia y el crimen organizado. La paz mundial y la prosperidad financiera global serán simplemente sueños difíciles de alcanzar en el 2011. A la economía de Estados Unidos le falta un trecho muy largo que recorrer para que

todo vuelva a la normalidad. Socialmente la gente en su mayoría andará en busca de sosiego y espiritualidad. Por otro lado, será el año de los escándalos políticos, del mundo del deporte y del medio artístico, sin embargo, muchos de estos escándalos serán simplemente artimañas y trucos publicitarios para llamar la atención, parece que el público por fin despertará de su letargo y no se dejará influenciar tan fácil como antes. Algunos programas de televisión muy reconocidos llegarán a su epílogo. La posición de los astros anuncia que será el año de las “bodas y los divorcios”, habrán muchos matrimonios apresurados, también separaciones y rupturas irremediables tanto en el medio de la farándula como en la población en general. El amor será un tema prioritario en el 2011, la mayoría de relaciones pasarán por una etapa de transición en ocasiones difícil de superar. Sucederán varias muertes de talentos que dejarán una huella perdurable, casi cada dos meses habrán decesos muy publicitados. Al estar tan cerca del 2012, se comenzará a notar una gran incertidumbre y se darán a conocer los neo profetas quienes anunciarán el

gran cambio que se avecina, unos lo tomarán en serio, otros no lo creerán, lo principal de todo será tener fe y creer que un mejor futuro nos espera. El 2011 nos dejará experiencias valiosas en nuestras

Salud oral y diabetes un vínculo importante (ARA) ¿Sabía usted que los diabéticos son dos veces más propensos a padecer de graves enfermedades de las encías? Según los Centros para el Control de las Enfermedades (Center for Disease Control, CDC), existe un predominio cada vez mayor de enfermedades de las encías entre los diabéticos, lo cual hace que la salud e higiene oral apropiadas sean un factor clave para los que padecen de diabetes. Por esa razón los odontólogos de todo el país quieren informar a los casi 24 millones de diabéticos que las enfermedades graves de las encías pueden ser una complicación adicional en sus casos. Los diabéticos corren un mayor riesgo de padecer de enfermedades graves de las encías porque son generalmente más susceptibles a la infección bacteriana, y tienen menos capacidad para combatir las bac-

terias que invaden las encías. "En general, la comunidad de diabéticos tiene poco conocimiento de la asociación entre la salud oral y las implicaciones a corto y largo plazo que podrían existir en un plan exitoso e integral de control de la diabetes", expresó el Dr. Víctor Rodríguez, presidente de la Asociación Dental Hispana (Hispanic Dental Association). "Una de las numerosas complicaciones de la diabetes es un mayor riesgo de enfermedades periodónticas". El Dr. Rodríguez recomienda los siguientes consejos preventivos de salud oral, además de que se debe visitar regularmente al dentista: * Use el hilo dental al menos una vez por día: el hilo dental contribuye a eliminar el sarro entre los dientes y la línea de las encías. * Cepíllese por lo menos dos veces al día y use un dentífrico antibacteriano como Col-

Santa Clara County Executive Names Linda M. Smith to Head Santa Clara Valley Medical Center

ANTA CLARA C O U N T Y , CALIF.— Jeffrey V. Smith, County Executive of the County of Santa Clara announced the appointment of Linda M. Smith (not related to Jeff Smith) to head the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, the County’s 574-bed acute care hospital. Linda, whose appointment is effective February 1, 2011, will be returning to Valley Medical where she began her health career as a respiratory therapist. “We are pleased to have Linda join the County’s executive management team,” said County Executive Smith. “She is returning to Valley Medical Center with an impressive track record in hospital administration and both the vision and experience to lead the or-

ganization.” Smith was employed by the $4 billion non-profit Aurora Health Care system in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, from 2001 to 2010. There she served as a hospital administrator of the Aurora BayCare Medical Center. She was responsible for the daily management of the 167-bed regional tertiary level 2 trauma center, including two ambulatory surgery centers. Smith opened that new tertiary facility including hiring 1,200 employees, and passing initial State, Federal and Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) surveys. She ran a professional organization and ended each of the past nine fiscal years ahead of budgeted net

income. She was promoted to Executive Vice President, North Region and was responsible for ensuring the quality and financial success of all health care services in the region which consisted of seven counties with net revenues of $475 million, 24 clinics, and two acute care hospitals. In a recent restructuring, she became the Vice President for Critical Growth Markets, and oversaw the successful openings of two Medical Centers and served as interim Chief Administrative Officer for Aurora Sheboygan Medical Center. She will reside in Morgan Hill. Her annual salary will be $284,867.

Add to that list of Spanish cultural exports to the world Theatre Flamenco (www.theatreflamenco.org), San Franciscoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s second oldest professional dance company. For ONE NIGHT ONLY, the â&#x20AC;&#x153;power, intensity, and rhythmic virtuosityâ&#x20AC;? (Pasatiempo) of Artistic Director Carola Zertucheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s vision takes to the stage of the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts (January 8, 2011, Saturday at 8pm) with the 45th Annual Home Season production, Una Nota Flamenca. Traditionally, orchestral instruments accompany the flamenco guitar, cajon and cante as dancers hearing the same musical note interpret the music through their own unique and alluring style of flamenco. Joining Zertuche and her company onstage will be renowned guest artists from Spain Manuel Gutierrez, Juan Siddi and Cristina Hall. Musical direction for Una Nota Flamenca is by Jose Valle â&#x20AC;&#x153;Chuscalesâ&#x20AC;? and Gypsy singer Cristo Cortes. Onstage musicians are Tregar Otton (violin), Alex Conde (pianist) and Jesse Wolff (cellist) Theatre Flamenco of San Francisco is the second oldest dance company in the Bay Area (after the SF Ballet). Founded in 1966 by Adela Clara, Theatre Flamenco was conceived during a flowering of cultural pride in the 60s that led to the revival of Latino arts. Theatre Flamenco shunned percussive footwork in favor of a lovely Ronde'as: a female quintet marked by sensuous unisons and wonderfully expressive shoulders, sheathed in blinding white dresses and the traditional trains. Under the leadership of new Artistic Director Zertuche, the vision for Theatre Flamenco is that of a highly professional company that, in addition to the annual home season, has an annual touring schedule and presents a quarterly community outreach series.
