As a result of this growing awareness, today we stand witness to the growing might of a diverse, highly-motivated electorate that will change American politics into the future." Washington, DC he Latino vote has grown exponentially since 2000, changing the political landscape in more than a dozen states across the country, and is poised to be pivotal yet again in the 2010 cycle. According to experts on the politics of the Latino vote, who gathered on a telephonic press conference, candidates and parties need to do more than say a few words in Spanish-they need to understand and embrace the policies that motivate and influence Latino voters. How both parties handle such issues as comprehensive immigration reform will
Democratic for years, the Democratic Party does not hold a lock on these voters. How both parties handle such issues as immigration reform will have a serious impact on Latino political behavior, including turnout and party preference. The 40 percent of Latino voters who are foreign-born naturalized citizens, have proven to be a crucial swing vote in recent elections, and the immigration issue is of particular importance to them. Races to Watch: The report tracks 40 races for 2010 in 12 states-29 U.S. House races, eight U.S. Senate races and three gubernatorial racesand analyzes Latino voter percentages as well as the candidates' positions on immigration reform. All of these races are close, and Latino voters will make a decisive impact in choosing the winners. Highest Latino percent Congressional Districts: The report also highlights the 79 congressional districts in which Latinos comprise at least 25% of the population, and a significant number of the voting electorate as well. Fifty-four of these seats are currently controlled by Democratic Members of Congress and 25 are controlled by Republican Members of Congress. "In 2010, how Latino voters behave and how both parties deal with the litmus test issue of immigration reform will be of huge consequence," said Frank Sharry, Executive Director of America's Voice. "Both parties have a significant stake in connecting with these voters, leaning into and leading on the issue of immigration reform, and getting on the right side of the fastest growing group of new voters in the nation."

na de las grandes satisfacciones que he tenido como Cónsul de México en una de las áreas más habitadas por nuestros connacionales ha sido el otorgar personalmente constancias de estudio a mexicanos que además de trabajar arduamente durante el día, asisten a clases para aprender a leer y escribir para superarse. Es una realidad que no podemos negar, muchos de nuestros connacionales trabajan aquí largas jornadas en lugares como campos agrícolas, construcciones, servicios, etc. Llegan con mucha energía, motivación y con muchos deseos de superación. Sin embargo, las circunstancias en las que se encuentran se convierten en un problema cuando se enfrentan a los retos de adaptación a su nuevo entorno, ya que los desafíos de no contar con una educación generan más obstáculos para salir adelante. Con la educación, comprendemos lo que sucede a nuestro alrededor para poder tomar decisiones que nos afectan diariamente. El primer problema que enfrenta mucha de nuestra gente, es que para aprender el idioma inglés, necesitan saber leer y escribir, y aquí es en donde se dan cuenta de que para aspirar al éxito y obtener una mejor calidad de vida, requieren de la educación. Como respuesta al problema, existe en muchas ciudades de la Unión Americana el programa Plazas Comunitarias, espacios que integran recursos y acciones educativas para la vida y el trabajo de la población migrante. Las Plazas son escuelas para adultos interesados en aprender a leer y escribir, concluir sus estudios de primaria y secundaria a través de videos, computadoras, cursos en línea y bibliotecas. Estas Plazas Comunitarias son creadas con programas del gobierno de México y sostenidas por instituciones de la comunidad local, con apoyo de instituciones educativas o de asistencia social, tanto del sector privado como del sector publico. Una Plaza Comunitaria es también un
centro de reunión popular para intercambiar ideas y enriquecerse al convivir con la comunidad. De la misma forma, las Plazas Comunitarias atienden a otros programas sociales como seminarios informativos para padres de familia, clases de inglés, programas de protección, cursos sobre el sistema legal de Estados Unidos, talleres culturales, e incluso cursos para obtener la ciudadanía. Una parte fundamental de este programa, la componen los maestros de las Plazas quienes motivan a los estudiantes y tratan de resolver algunos problemas de transportación, cuidado de sus niños, y a veces hasta de alimentación. Gracias a estos maestros con gran vocación, los alumnos logran salvar grandes obstáculos desde saber leer y escribir, hasta su graduación de primaria y secundaria. Los estudiantes adultos se convierten en un gran ejemplo para niños y adolescentes a quienes se transmite la importancia del estudio, el valor de los libros, la dedicación y la disciplina. Sin duda alguna, las plazas comunitarias han logrado una comunidad migrante más educada y con mayores logros. He podido constatar el éxito de este programa de estudios. Don Antonio, un mexicano que llegó a este país con muchas metas, me comentaba muy entusiasmado el día que recibió su certificado "hoy estoy de pie, hoy puedo leer y escribir"; antes de trabajar como gerente en una sólida empresa Don Antonio pasaba largas horas agachado pizcando fresas en un campo al sur de San José. Pero gracias a que finalizó sus estudios en la Plaza Comunitaria de Watsonville, Don Antonio tiene acceso a mejores oportunidades de vida y comenta que hasta puede llenar por si solo las formas cada vez que acude al médico. La educación es la base del desarrollo y la mejor inversión para el futuro, por ello es necesario seguir fortaleciendo estos programas y sus objetivos ya que de esa forma apoyamos la formación de jóvenes y particularmente adultos mexicanos, para que adquieran diversas herramientas educativas y con ello tengan acceso a una mejor calidad de vida en este país y además puedan integrarse de manera mas productiva a esta sociedad.

Economic Action Coupled With Confidence Will Succeed

e need not abandon that confidence we had as a community before corporate greed led us all down the garden path to near financial system collapse. Without governmental monitoring, the financial institutional greed ran rampant and unchecked. Honesty, integrity, and transparency were lacking and led to total distrust. Now, when minimal monitoring systems are proposed by the Obama administration, the minority party in unison and with no logic that can be understood rises to their fear of big government. Obama's administration must proceed as if no barriers existed to its agenda which deals with promoting 'the peoples business." That is the change we can believe in. When everything in life seems to go well, it is easy to exude an air of confidence. After all, when things are going well; when employment was at high 95 percent levels; when we have a little extra money to spend, life is easier to enjoy. There is no challenge so it becomes easier to be complacent. It is when things go wrong; when we do wrong that our confidence slips. And if things go badly enough, our confidence not only slips, but we seem to abandon it. The result is a miasma of loneliness where doing well seems impossible. Something goes bad every single day. It seems that is what the mainstream media dote on to the point that their listeners become insensitive to both the good and the bad that goes on. The good news is the beginning of a growth economy seems to be on the horizon. Unemployment diminished slightly. Manufacturing is up slightly. The downward economic spiral towards another Great Depression seems to have been mitigated by all that money which 'We the People' provided to those overextended financial institutions. On February 5, 2010, President Obama outlined the latest in a series of new small business proposals which expanded already successful small business programs to increase access to working capital and to help these small businesses refinance their debts. Two legislative proposals were sent to Congress. Both were designed to help small businesses access capital. Small businesses are the innovative creators of additional jobs and the new technology, which creates additional jobs. ation will always be business. Today, we're taking another step towards assisting small business owners get the capital they need to grow and hire." Small Business Administration (SBA) administrator Karen Mills said, "These proposals will provide us with two effective tools to help small business meet specific challenges brought on by the recession. First, in the tight credit market of the last two years, lines of credit have been cut for small firms. Raising the limit on SBA Express loans to $1 million will mean more small business owners will have quicker access to this source of capital to help restock inventories and support larger revenue sales, and literally take the next step to grow their business and create new jobs. Second, thousands of good credit worthy businesses find themselves caught by declining real estate values as a result of this recession. With many of them now facing mortgages coming due in the next few years, the ability to refinance into SBA's 504 loan will give them the chance to lock in longterm, stable financing, as well as protect jobs by protecting small businesses from foreclosure." These two developments mean that expanded credit and capital will soon be available to small business if Congress passes this proposed legislation soon. We can expect the Republican minority to drag their feet. If they do, they will be helping the Independent constituency become even larger. They face a very real reality of becoming irrelevant because of their reliable and unwavering opposition to anything proposed by the President. Republicans need to take note when Jim McEntee repeated the famous quote: "Don't look for the flaws as you go through life. And even if you do find them, it is wise and kind to be somewhat blind and to look for the virtue behind them." We know that we have more than hope, when the Obama Administration takes economic action coupled with the confidence that we will succeed. Finally, money is being placed where it will be supportive of the people's business. In the small business arena, the money small business owners spend will trickle out into the community and up. The Obama administration’s proposal for our economy, coupled with the audacity of confidence, will succeed.Δ

a ha pasado más de un año desde que terminó el contrato de Barbara Attard como Auditora de la Policía de San José. Desde entonces se eligió a Chris Constantin como Auditor. Resultó que Constantin es hermano de un policía de la ciudad de San José. Por esta razón tuvo debut y despedida y dejó a disposición su cargo y salió. Debido a las duras críticas de esta elección donde incluso participaron latinos y Concejales se puso más énfasis que en esta próxima elección la comunidad tiene que participar. La Ciudad de San José está reclutando un nuevo Auditor para la Policía y está interesada en recibir los comentarios y sugerencias de la comunidad sobre las cualidades que un Concejal debe considerar en la evaluación de los candidatos para esta posición. Es una oportunidad para que los participantes planteen sus puntos de vista sobre los requisitos que deben ser contemplados en un candidato. La reunión con la comunidad está programada para el próximo 25 de febrero en el Centro Comunitario de Roosvelt localizado en la 901 E. de la calle Santa Clara en San José. o one knows your community better than you and your neighbors. You know what works, what needs fixing, and what's beyond repair. Where those district lines are drawn can make a big difference. Communities that stand together have more clout and get more attention. Neighborhoods divided among several representatives often get short-changed. These lines are changed once each decade after the Census. So who draws the lines - and how they do the job - really matters.
That work is about to begin. And this time, it will be done by people just like you. It's called the Citizens' Redistricting Commission. It's being created by the State Auditor's Office, which has set up a website to take applications from the public at www.WeDrawtheLines.ca.gov. You can be part of it - if you apply. This is serious, important work ... and it won't be easy. It will take thoughtful choices about which communities belong together within a district - so that every voter's rights are protected, and every community has an equal opportunity to be heard. That's real power - and a real opportunity to get involved and make a difference in California's fu-
ture. It's easy to apply - and the time is now. Applications are being accepted on-line until February 16th You can find out more, and file an application at www.WeDrawtheLines.ca.gov. Commission members will be paid $300 a day for their work. Think it over. Like most people, you've probably already got a lot on your plate. Assembly member Fong's Bill Will Help Students Pay for College Tuition

ssembly member Paul Fong (D-Cupertino) introduced AB 1761, which will increase college students' access to higher education. The Cal Grant Program is California's financial aid program for college students. Cal grants are awarded to students who meet certain income and academic requirements. The grants can be used to pay for any California Community College, California State University, University of California, private college, and most career technical or vocational schools.
When this program was created, it was assumed that low-income students would go to a community college first. Currently, first-year students only receive Cal Grant B money to buy books and other school supplies; the student must pay tuition. Only the second-year students can use their money to pay for tuition and supplies. This bill will change the unjust assumption that all low-income students must go to community colleges by allowing all Cal Grant B Program students to use their money to pay for tuition and supplies. AB 1761 will allow many deserving students to attend the college of their choice because they will be able to afford the tuition during their critical first year of college. "We need to ensure that California's colleges remain accessible to all students," says Assembly member Fong. "Our students' education should be a top priority in this state, and assisting them in these tough economic times is crucial to the future of California." Assembly member Fong serves as Chair of the Elections and Redistricting Committee and is a member of the Banking and Finance, Higher Education, and Utilities and Commerce Committees. In addition, Assembly member Fong serves on the Select Committees on Aerospace, Biotechnology, Community Colleges, Domestic Violence, and Innovation and the Bay Area Economy. He represents Cupertino, Mountain View, Sunnyvale, Santa Clara and San Jose.
"No hay nada más precioso en la vida que levantarte y saber que estas vivo, que hay gente, que hay tráfico porque hay vida. Tambien que puedes salir de tu casa sin el miedo a que te maten, que puedes ver flores, árboles y no solo ver el desierto", dice el Comandante Otto Lee quien está de regreso luego de haber sido destacado un año a Irak. Estar en el otro lado del mundo donde el conflicto sigue es terrible. "Me siento enojado por la población de Irak que vive bajo mucha inseguridad", dice el Comandante Lee. Aunque no puede asegurar del todo si en los próximos cinco años será llamado porque su servicio equivale a un año y los reglamentos cambian. Como oficial de logística para ayudar en la retirada de los EE.UU Lee tiene muchas experiencias que contar. En otoño cohetes fueron lanzados a 90 pies de distancia de su centro de operaciones. Lee se salvó y está aquí para contarlo. Otto Lee antes de ser destacado a la zona
de conflicto corrió para Supervisor del Distrito 3 pero el destino lo puso en una situación clave para servir a su país y tuvo que regresar a Irak. Otto Lee fue Alcalde de Sunnyvale y a su regreso retomará su puesto como Concejal en esta misma ciudad hasta el año 2012. Lleno de proyectos y energía Lee espera con ansiedad iniciar su labor como Concejal en la ciudad de Sunnyvale. Otto Lee se reincorpora el 23 de febrero a la ciudad para continuar los trabajos de ampliación y remodelación del centro de Sunnyvale y analizar el presupuesto y ver la mejor manera de cómo invertir en esta pequeña ciudad. "Lo peor lo hemos pasado" explica Lee refiriéndose a la situación económica en este país. A Lee la presencia del Estadio para los 49ers significa una fuente de ingreso a su ciudad en términos de servicios hoteleros, restaurantes, taxis etc. El 5 de febrero se honra al Comandante Otto Lee en el Dynasty Restaurant localizado en la 10123 N. ¡QUE NO CIERRE EL NUMMI!
Contratistas no recibirán indemnización por sus décadas de servicio

amilias viven bajo la incertidumbre luego que en agosto del año pasado se anunció que ejecutivos de Toyota decidieron terminar su contrato con la planta automotriz NUMMI localizada en Fremont a fines de marzo. Esto ha puesto en riesgo el empleo de 4,700 trabajadores y a más de 20 mil empleados que trabajan para otros contratistas. Esto dejará a California sin una de sus principales industrias y el nivel de desempleo se incrementará por su efecto dominó. Contra el reloj Una vez notificados del cierre de la planta y batallando por salvar su fuente de ingresos para muchos de ellos el cierre significa parte de su vida dedicado a trabajar y hacer de este planta todo un éxito empresarial. Este fin de semana un grupo de trabajadores de la planta NUMMI asi como otros trabajadores que laboran como contratistas salieron a protestar en la esquina de Stevens Creek y la avenida Kiely en la ciudad de San Jose. Los protestantes permanecieron por 5 horas en uno de los concesionarios de Toyota que más vende en el Área de la Bahía. Ni la lluvia ni el mal tiempo impedieron que trabajadores y simpatizantes llegaran desde Modesto, Fresno y Fremont para participar en esta protesta del pasado 6 de febrero. "He sido comunicado que solo trabajaremos hasta el 31 de marzo. Eso ya lo sabemos desde el año pasado, lo peor de todo es que muchos de los trabajadores en su mayoría latinos hemos trabajo más de 20 años y no vamos a recibir ninguna indemnización por nuestros servicios laborales", explicó René Bartres, Presidente del local 76 y contratista de Premier Manufacturing
(Contratista con NUMMI). Los trabajadores ganan $18.25 la hora y explicaron a EO que desda hace siete años no reciben aumento. Lo que si han recibido de aumento es el pago de seguro médico. "Tenemos que apoyar a estos trabajadores, quieren desbaratar el sindicato y eso no lo vamos a permitir", dijo activista comunitaria Patricia Martinez-Roach. A esta protesta se sumaron los trabajadores a lado de sus hijos. Un trabajador que no quiso ser identificado guarda la esperanza que no cierre la planta para que no perjudiquen el único ingreso para alimentar a sus 5 menores hijos y continuar con el pago de los estudios de sus hijos. Latino Overrepresentation in the Criminal Justice Systems By Cinthia Rodriguez - El Observador
L
a Raza Roundtable de California met city and county officials met at 12:30pm on Wednesday, February 10, 2010, in the Center for Training and Careers (CTC), to discuss a conflict assessment done by the Harvard Negotiation and Mediation Clinical Program (HNMCP). The issue was that of Latino overrepresentation in the justice and juvenile dependency systems in the City of San Jose and Santa Clara County. "We are here today to look for ways to reduce the disproportionate minority confinement in our juvenile hall branches and in our county jail," said District Attorney, Dolores Carr. According to the Probation Department of the Santa Clara County, more than 70% of the population in juvenile facilities is Hispanic. "It's a problem that we are all committed to solve," said Jeff Smith, County Executive. The HNMCP team conducted interviews with approximately 50 individuals. Approximately one-third of those interviews were conducted in person, during the team's visit to San Jose in October 2009 and the rest were done telephonically. "We are committed to working together," said Mayor Chuck Reed. "I'm pleased to see the work being done." In October 2009, Mayor Chuck Reed, San Jose City Manager Debra Figone, San Jose City Councilwoman Rose Herrera, and Rev. Sal Alvarez also met with the HNMCP team in Cambridge, Massachusetts to discuss the report. The HNMCP team developed recommendations based on the findings developed through the interviews and discussions held with La Raza Roundtable, Mayor Reed's office, and Supervisor Cortese.
There were five major findings and along with those findings, recommendations were made, which are fully explained in the report. "The assessment goes beyond making sure that systems are not in denial," said Supervisor Cortese. "This fully exposes the problem but in a collaborative manner and in an objective manner." "What's going on is a crime," said Victor Garza. "There is going to be positive change in this community."
The County of Santa Clara is fully on board. An equal justice task force within the office of District Attorney Dolores Carr is being developed. Christopher Arriola, Deputy District Attorney, will head the task force. The San Jose Police Department will be working collectively with the other law enforcement agencies in the Santa Clara County. They would like to experience the same success with other models that are being used.

A New Place to Play

hen I was a kid, my friends, brother and I used to go to our neighborhood playground and play until the sun came down. We would jump off swings, hang upside down and run down slides. The playground helped us grow and even learn from our mistakes. It was a place to forget about all of our cares and
to let our imaginations flow freely. Lately, the city of San Jose has been using funds to build and rebuild several playgrounds throughout the city. On Saturday, February 6, Council member Rose Herrera (District 8) was joined by members of the Department of Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services and local residents for a groundbreaking ceremony of the Aborn Park Playground. The playground project began in Au-
gust of 2007 with a series of community meetings to discuss the planning and development of a new playground. “The seeds for this project have been planted and it is time to watch this project develop,” Herrera said. “It’s like waiting for Spring to watch the flowers blossom. This is truly something wonderful and important to witness.” Herrera thanked the residents of her district for their input on the playground and their dedication to the park. “The residents who participated in these meetings came up with some great designs for this project,” Herrera said. The park project includes a youth lot (under five years of age) incorporating a ship structure, as well as a youth lot (over five years of age) with a castle design. “A playground gives a signature to what a neighborhood is all about,” said Albert Balagso, director, Department of Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services. “Playgrounds are were kids develop their characteristics.” The two new play areas will total 7.500 square feet with a completion date of June 2010. The Parks Trust Fund and the Construction and Conveyance Tax will fund the project.

en years ago, San Jose voters approved a Branch Library Bond Measure, which provided $212 million over ten years dedicated to the construction of six new and fourteen expanded branch libraries in San José. On Saturday, February 6, the 15th out of 20 projects was completed when the Santa Teresa Branch Library opened to the public. Despite the cloudiness, over 100 people showed up for the grand opening. “It is always a great day in San Jose when a new library is opened,” said Jane Light, San Jose Public Library Director. “Everyone who comes into this new library is going to be amazed by what they will find inside.” The new library is an extension of the old library that was built in 1984. It has grown from 13,860 square feet to 22,000 square feet. In addition, it contains more computers, more seats and more parking. There are also new group study and storytelling areas. “The people wanted a library that allows lots of natural light to enter, and a place to feel comfortable,” Light said. “We also saved one-million dollars when building this project.”
San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed was also present at the opening and thanked the people for passing a bond that made the expansion of the library possible. “Opening libraries in San Jose is one of the most exciting things to do,” Reed said. “What’s even better is that we have been able to do more with less on this particular project.” Terry L. Austen, a member of the Library Foundation Board said he was impressed by the energy and creativity that was given to the project. “This library will help increase the level of literacy in our community,” Austen said. "It will also inspire our imaginations.” “Libraries are what make civilizations great,” added Mike Nguyen, Chair of the
Library Commission. “Some of the libraries that San Jose has built are in places that have never had libraries before.” The theme behind the artwork that is displayed at the library is “Cultivating the Mind in the Orchard of Knowledge”. Three separate artworks with this theme are displayed at the library. “The art was made possible by the city’s Public Art Programs,” said Kerry Adams-Hapner, Director, City of San Jose Office of Cultural Affairs. “The community helped select the artists and the art that is here in this library.” The new Santa Teresa library is located at 290 International Circle across the street from Kaiser Permanente. "Together, Not Torn: Families Can't Wait for Immigration Reform" By Cinthia Rodriguez - El Observador
R
epresentatives Mike Honda (D-CA) and Yvette Clark (D-NY) joined Faith Leaders in a teleconference announcing the delivery of thousands of pro-reform postcards to members of congress from people of faith in their states and districts. Nearly 100 events across the nation urging immigration reform have also been scheduled. "Every day you witness firsthand how a broken immigration system continues to break up families," said Representative Yvette Clark (D-NY). "America is a nation of great humanity and it's time our immigration system reflects that." The participants of the teleconference explained "Together, Not Torn: Families Can't Wait for Immigration Reform," as a nationwide mobilization of people of faith standing up for immigration reform that keeps families together. A number of events in New York, Ohio, Colorado, Pennsylvania, and other states are working on developing tools for greater conversation within congregations. Vigils coordinated by faith leaders and community members are also planned. They will be taking place during President's Day recess and into early March. "Every day thousands of Silicon Valley families live in fear and in some cases panic, that their families will be separated," said Father Jon Pedigo of St. Billiart Parish in San Jose. Father Pedigo also said that neighborhoods can't continue to live in fear of deportation and distrust the local police. Everybody in his Spanish-speaking congregation knows somebody who has been detained or deported. "The folks that expose themselves to the dangers of crossing borders aren't doing it for fun, they're doing it because they love their families, they need to support their families and sustain them," said Mike Honda (D-CA). Family situations are different and deporting family members makes things even harder. A child may have a relative in the country and that's the best place for them. Parents also choose to leave their child behind in an attempt to provide a better life.

T
he existence of a cricket might seem boring, but that's because you've never seen a Brazilian cricket in action. You can see, hear, and smell what the cricket and his insect friends are really chirping about with Cirque du Soleil's latest production, “Ovo�. After submitting an audition video, Zeca Padilha, a native of Brazil, was called back and was offered the part of the cricket in the production. "I've been interested in gymnastics since the age of eight," said Padilha. "Now I'm jumping all the time." The production consists of 54 performing artists from 13 countries. They all work together during the spectacle to show the different aspects of an insect's life. Like the cricket, ants and fleas go unnoticed all their life. Ovo captures the essence of these insects' world. "This show is very good, it has amazing energy," said Padilha. As an egg is introduced to the cricket and his friends, the insects breakout with curiosity and a natural se-
quence of events follow. A caterpillar transforms into a butterfly, which was illustrated by an aerial silk performer. An appropriate flying act soon followed. "I liked Quebec City," said Padilha, when asked about the ideal place to perform. The mission of Cirque de Soleil, a Quebec-based organization, is to invoke the imagination, provoke the senses and evoke emotions of people, and that's exactly what it accomplished. The blue and gold tent where the main attraction takes place is filled with an earthy aroma that is easily recognized. As flowers bloomed on stage, the scent of the flowers also poured into the air, which was also filled with love. "The show is a complete experience," said Padilha. The production that took two years to develop, follows up on a couple that share mutual feelings. All while the life of the cricket and his friends is also being depicted. The sunny side of an insect's existence comes to life with the costumes and movements of all the different acts. Ovo is currently in San Jose with performances until March 7, 2010. Public Health Department's Contest Winners Educate Us About H1N1 Flu San Jose, California he Santa Clara County Public Health Department announced the winners of its H1N1 YouTube Video Contest, which was open to high school and college students in Santa Clara County, an age group at higher risk for illness and serious complications from the H1N1 flu virus. The contest was part of the health department's efforts to reach this demographic through social media avenues such as

Facebook, MySpace and YouTube. Mission College students Lucia Martinez Alvarez, Gladys Balajadia, Reina Batto, and Evangeline Obispo won in the Best Overall Video category. Their "H1N1 vs. Superheroes" video featured a college student who is saved from the H1N1 flu virus by superheroes who fight the "virus." The student falsely believes she is not at risk for H1N1, but the superheroes set her straight, encouraging her to get vaccinated and

orte una estampita de "San Valentín" en su billetera, para que siempre cuente con buena suerte en el amor y también con amistades sinceras. San Valentín es considerado como un santo muy milagroso que concede todo tipo de ruegos y peticiones. Pero ¿Quién es San Valentin? ¿Por qué celebramos San Valentín?. Para esto tenemos que hacer un poco de historia. San Valentín fue un sacerdote que vivió en Roma en el siglo III, en esa época el Emperador Claudio II, había prohibido la práctica del cristianismo y se condenaba a muerte a quien desobedeciera esa ley. San Valentín desobedecía la ley romana, consolaba a mártires, a hombres y mujeres que eran perseguidos y casó a muchas parejas cristianas; ayudaba a los necesitados. Cuando el Santo fue arrestado y encarcelado, enfureció al Emperador, porque rechazó frente a él, a los dioses paganos de Roma; entonces Claudio II, le mandó a encarcelar por un magistrado cuya
hija estaba ciega. San Valentín le devolvió la vista a la joven, y la convirtió al cristianismo a ella y a toda su familia. El Emperador enfurecido le mandó a apedrear y decapitar. Una día antes que se llevara a cabo la cruel sentencia, el Santo le envoi una nota a la muchacha, diciéndole que por todos los años que había sufrido sin poder ver, él le prometía ayudarle desde el mundo espiritual para que encontrara un gran amor que la hiciera inmensamente feliz por el resto de su vida, en la firma al final de la nota se leía: "Tu Valentín". A las pocas semanas de su muerte, un joven noble escandinavo, conoció a la muchacha, se enamoró y se casó con ella. La iglesia cambió un antiguo festival pagano del amor, en honor de la diosa de la fertilidad Februata Juno, que se celebraba a mediados de febrero por la de San Valentín, el santo del amor y la amistad. Significó un reto filmar nueva versión de "El hombre lobo": Del Toro

l productor Benicio del Toro aseguró que haberse arriesgado a filmar una nueva versión de "El hombre lobo", además de un reto significa una arma de doble filo. El actor se encuentra en gira promocional de la película, que dirigió John Johnson, en la que participa Anthony Hopkins, Emily Blunt, Hugo Weaving y Geraldine Chap-
lin, y en la que Del Toro aceptó que será el público quien decida luego de su estreno el próximo 12 de febrero, si el largometraje debe permanecer en cartelera. En entrevista con Notimex, el actor señaló que están seguros de que hicieron una buena producción para todos aquellos que ya conocen la historia de "El hombre lobo", y de quienes se enterarán de que existe. "Debo aceptar que en este proyecto cargamos un cuchillo de doble filo, pero insisto, consideramos que les va a gustar, pues además en los años recientes se ha generado una fiebre por los moustruos como vampiros y hombres lobo", expresó. Subrayó que aunque el tema tampoco es nuevo, en virtud de que en la era de los griegos, los mitos,
las fábulas y leyendas sobre los licántropos eran de todo mundo. Añadió que el "remake" servirá para provocarle curiosidad a los jóvenes que gustan de este tipo de cine, acudir a las salas. "Las películas siempre se hacen para que el público vaya a verlas, pero hay algunas que no lo logran en su estreno, pero al paso del tiempo encuentran varios nichos que le son favorables", afirmó. Enfatizó que ahora el termómetro para decidir la permanencia de un filme se mide a partir del ingreso inmediato en taquillas y no por otros factores. Sobre si esperaría a que algún día "El hombre lobo", la película que promueve, pudiera llegar a convertirse en un clásico como el filme de 1941, el cineasta dijo que todas las esperanzas son válidas. Cuestionado acerca de si espera que la gente se vuelque a la taquilla, Del Toro comentó que él cree que por lo menos que se le dé un buen tiempo en la cartelera. Al insistirle si se desilusionaría o tomaría como un fracaso el que la película no respondiera en taquilla, afirmó que el trabajo está ahí terminado y ya no le compete a ellos sino a la gente que quiera verla.
