"Su Participación es Vital" Por Congresista Mike Honda (D-California)

ste mes, diez preguntas llegarán a su buzón. Entre los muchos mensajes, este es uno que usted no debe desechar. Es el Censo, el cual define cuantos re presentantes irán al Congreso por cada estado y también determina como los $400 billones de dólares del gobierno federal serán utilizados en proyectos como hospitales, escuelas, centros de entrenamiento laboral, centros para ancianos, obras públicas y servicios de emergencia. Obtener la información sobre los habitantes del país, genera 1.4 millones de empleos. Pero el Censo no contará a millones de personas, ya sea porque la gente no sabe del Censo o porque las personas tienen miedo que su información sea compartida con las autoridades de inmigración - esto no va a suceder! Cada persona no incluida en el Censo nos cuesta mucho. El Censo del año 2000 dejó por fuera a más de 522,000 Californianos, lo cual resultó en la pérdida de $1.56 billones de dólares en ayuda federal al estado durante los ultimos diez años. Además, si las personas no devuelven los formularios con la información necesaria, se debe enviar a personas para que las visiten puerta a puerta, a un costo adicional de $100 millones de dolares. En 2007, el periódico Mercury News reportó que el Condado de Santa Clara tenía el porcentage más alto de inmigrantes en el estado, con 36% de personas nacidas en el extranjero. Nacionalmente, el Condado ocupa el primer lugar en el número de personas que hablan Vietnamés, el segundo lugar en personas que hablan Hindi, el tercer lugar en personas que hablan Chino y el cuarto lugar en personas que hablan Farsi. En el año 2010, la oficina del Censo en el Condado de Santa Clara, incrementó el número de empleados a 33, y está gastando gran parte de su presupuesto de $133 millones de dólares en campañas publicitarias para llegar a comunidades étnicas aisladas. Esta acción ayudará mucho. Los anuncios de televisión en 28 idiomas, y las consultas de ayuda a 150,000 negocios y grupos comunitarios indican la seriedad del esfuerzo para llegar a todas las comunidades. Aun así, los errores son un problema nacional. Un formulario de ejemplo traducido al Vietnamés describió al Censo como una "investigación de gobierno." Me he reunido con el director regional del Censo, he hecho anuncios de servicio público y he abogado por un plan de medios de comunicación al nivel de Condado. Estamos efectuando conferencias informativas, organizando eventos el día 26 de Febrero, y además, estamos en coordinación con organizaciones comunitarias, empresas y escuelas por todo el estado de California. Si bien el Censo no será perfecto, debemos evitar no censar a millones de personas, como sucedió en el año 2000. Nuestra habilidad de desarrollar políticas apropiadas depende de esto. n these days of easy access to information using electronic devices, much of that information is someone’s interpretation of the truth and the facts. It’s often misinformation. Too many individuals accept theses versions without the personal application of several simple questions: 1) Am I dealing with the facts and the truth of this matter? 2) Is what is being proposed or presented fair to all parties affected? 3) Does the proposed action promote peace and tranquility as commerce, which benefits the community? 4) Will my community benefit as much as others? Do not accept information without applying your own personal critical evaluation thereof. The outcome will be that you will not vote blindly come the next Election Day, Tuesday, June 8, 2010. Resolve now to begin to visit El Observador’s Web site: www.el-observador.com. Also, make a personal commitment to support this Latino owned and operated source of news by making a contribution to its operational expenses…just go to the Web site of El Observador Foundation, Inc., the sister non-profit entity which will use funds donated to assist worthy and needy individuals as well as other local based non-profit organizations. The Young Explorer By Osvaldo Castillo El Observador

he early teen years are a time of exploration for most kids. It is a time to wonder what else is out there beyond their city, state or country. But while most middle school students are exploring the world through video games, computers and the internet, Jose Rocha has an opportunity to set foot on foreign soil. Jose Andres Rocha, a 7th grader from Quimby Oaks Middle School in San Jose, is one of two students from San Jose to be accepted into the People to People International Student Ambassador Program, an educational travel program founded by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The European Odyssey will take Jose to France, Italy and Greece for 20 days in the summer of 2010 as a member of the Central Valley (Stockton/Modesto) delegation. “I want to see their culture, food and make friendships with new people,” Jose said. During the 20-day journey, Jose will have an opportunity to stay at the home of a host family, take part in meetings with government officials, and participate in educational activities with other students of his age. President Dwight D. Eisenhower founded the Program in 1956 on the principal that if people from different cultures came together in
peace and friendship, then the countries would soon follow. Jose has also participated in other activities and programs throughout San Jose including Relay for Life in Saratoga, "Step Out to Fight Diabetes", the Organization for Latino Affairs (OLA), and the Hispanic Heritage Month Event Organization for Latino Affairs (OLA). “I am very proud of him because he is not afraid and takes advantage of all the opportunities that come his way,” said his mother Leticia Rocha. Jose’s other interests include soccer, math, science, social studies and NASA. “I want to be an astronaut like Jose Hernandez,” Jose said. “That is why I participate in EAA Young Eagles program.” The total cost of the European Odyssey is $7,189.00, which includes all transportation, accommodations, meals and educational activities. Middle School Girls Reminded of their Potential By Cinthia Rodriguez - El Observador ilicon Valley Leadership Group and NASA presented the First Annual Silicon Valley Women & Girls Leadership Summit on February 12, 2010, at Peter Burnett Academy in San Jose. The half-day event featured keynote speakers, a panel, plus large and small group Q&A sessions among the girls and women executives. "You are not alone and you're not the only one that has faced or dealt with whatever challenge you're facing," said Shellye Archambeau, CEO, MetricStream. The panel participants shared the defining moments in their lives and the obstacles they had to overcome. A message of understanding was expressed to the 450 girls from the traditionally underserved middle school. "Never comprise your passion," said Councilmember Nora Campos, San Jose City Council. Like other executive women, Campos thanked her parents for pushing her and guiding her. She reminded the girls of activist Cesar Chavez and the importance of finding inspiration as soon as they can. The summit also featured women of different stages in their life, race, age and area of expertise. Students conducted interviews with three sets of women at a time, giving them a chance to let girls know that their dreams are possible. "What I remember about being in eighth grade honestly is, I was scared to death," said

Carly Fiorina, former CEO of Hewlett-Packard. "So if your afraid today, its okay, its part of life, but don't let it stop you." Fiorina spoke about aiming high because the higher they aim, the further they can get. She also spoke about not letting other people define you or to tell you what you can or cannot do. Young women have to decide on their own and they have the power to choose how to act. The girls were also told that surrounding themselves with the smartest people they can find is not a bad idea like many think. Instead, it can make things easier on them. "You're going to have to work harder than men, be smarter than men, and you're absolutely capable of it," said Assemblymember Anna Caballero, California State Assembly. "Education is the key." The executive women spoke about their circumstances. The girls have to make sure they know that they don't choose their circumstances, but they can choose how to respond to those circumstances. Education is just one of the many ingredients needed to affect circumstances. All of the panel participants spoke about going to college and chasing their dream. Although the middle school students have yet to finish high school, they have to take the time to choose their own path. "You live in a country where actually everything is possible," said Fiorina. "But not everything is easy."

n December 20, 2008, Shelby Lyn Allen died from acute alcohol poising, also referred to as binge drinking. In light of the loss, Voices United, the Silicon Valley Resource on Substance Use and Addiction, brought Debbie Allen, mother of Shelby. "Teens think if they land at a house and drink, and spend the night (and don't drive); the worst that can happen is a hangover or embarrassing pictures on Facebook or Youtube," said Debbie Allen. "None of them know that you can simply drink just a little too much alcohol, pass out and never wakeup." Debbie Allen spoke to approximately 80 people on February 16, 2010, at the Mayfair Community Center. After her daughter's death, she promised to do everything she could to educate teens, young adults and parents to the risks in alcohol poising. The crowd was able to see Shelby grow through a series of photos projected before the people. She was 17 years old and in high school she was in track and played volleyball. She would have graduated this year. "I'm not here for my Shelby, she's not here," said Allen. "I'm here for you." The Shelby Lyn Allen Alcohol Poisoning Foundation was started after Shelby's death and the message behind the foundation is that alcohol plus vomiting equals 911. Allen explained how some people can be left alone, thinking everything is okay, but the person can vomit, choke, and die. Binge drinking is popular and vodka is also becoming popular because of the perks it offers

It is easy to drink more than eight ounces in less than hour and the more a person drinks in less time can be fatal. "Our daughter made poor choices that night, but those choices should have never led to her death,” said Allen. Shelby never had a chance to go to the Emergency Room. Her death was preventable and young adults need to understand that. The signs have to be recognized. Vomiting is one of those signs that people have an uncomfortable attitude with. Census Campaign (It Is Time, Make Yourself Count!) - to inform and motivate the nearly 50 million U.S. Latinos to fully participate in the 2010 Census. The U.S. Census Bureau has had a poor track record when it comes to enumerating the growing U.S. Latino population. The 2000 Census, despite producing a net over count of the total population, produced an undercount of Latinos of around 3% (or one million Latinos). The ya es hora, ÂĄHAGASE CONTAR! Campaign will enhance the Bureau's efforts to count Latinos through a sustained and aggressive community education initiative to mobilize hundreds of local organizations on the ground. The campaign will also saturate targeted media with the assistance of Spanish-language partners Univision, Entravision and impreMedia. "A census that fails to accurately count all

Latinos is a failed census," said Arturo Vargas, Executive Director of the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials Educational Fund (NALEO). "As a community we need to understand that full participation in American life requires standing up and being counted." Despite the intensive national effort that the Census Bureau intends to mount during 2009 and 2010, ensuring a full count of the Latino population will require a comprehensive, community-based effort. The census is taken largely through the U.S. postal system, and factors such as unlisted addresses, households with large families and high mobility rates contribute to persons being missed. The recession and large number of foreclosures in the Latino community will make enumerating this population even more difficult in 2010. The ya es hora, ÂĄHAGASE CONTAR! Campaign will focus on promoting the importance of the census, educating individuals about filling out their census forms and encouraging households to mail back their responses once they complete their forms. This phase of the coalition's work builds on the success of the

ichard Calderón ex oficial del Departamento de la Policía de San José estuvo por 30 años al servicio de esta institución policial y ha decidido ahora postular para ocupar el puesto de Alguacil del Condado de Santa Clara. "Prometo trabajar con mi comunidad. Como cabeza de una oficina que aplica la ley promoveré una trabajo amplio de cooperación al más alto nivel. El diálogo es uno de los elementos importantes", dijo el candidato por el cargo de Alguacil del Condado de Santa Clara. En referencia a los recursos del Departamento del Aguacil Calderón se compromete a usar los recursos eficientemente para hacer del Condado un lugar seguro que beneficie a los ciudadanos y permita ofrecer mejor servicio a todos los miembros de la comunidad. El año pasado Calderón se desempeñó como Jefe del Departamento Policial de la ciudad de Gustine y permaneció por corto tiempo. A la Ciudad de Gustine no le gusto la rectitud y seriedad que lideró en el Departamento Policial. El pueblo "conservador" de Gustine se quejó de las multas de tráfico que recibía cons tantemente sin embargo la versión del actual candidato es que el quiso hacer respetar la ley en el marco de la constitución. "No
me excedí, hice cumplir la ley y no me fui a tomar al bar con el alcalde vistiendo uniforme y portando un arma como lo hizo el anterior jefe policial", explicó Calderón. "Richard Calderón como Jefe de Policía desempeñó el mejor de los trabajos en esta comunidad. Por ejemplo él trabajó con un programa de verano para jóvenes en Los Banios e hizo cosas más allá de lo que la comunidad pedía", dijo Alejandra Crisoles. Por su parte Dough Gorman consideró a Calderón como una de las personas más responsables y comprometidas con su comunidad. "Había una falta de liderazgo en esta comunidad y él se mostró como un hombre justo e íntegro", añadió Gorman. Calderón tendrá que correr con Laurie Smith (actual alguacil y que dice pocos la conocen del Condado), Martin Monica y Joe Charvez. Calderón sería el primer latino en este puesto tan crucial para el Condado de Santa Clara.

an Jose Council member Nora Campos’ (District 5) term will be ending December 31, 2010 and four qualified candidates are ready to fill her seat. On Thursday, February 11, the candidates held a forum at the Tropicana Buffet in East San Jose to speak to residents of the district, who are primarily Hispanic and Asian, and discuss the issues that affect their communities. The four candidates are J. Manuel Herrera, Trustee for the East Side Union High School District; community activist and small business owner, Aaron Resendez; San Jose family advocate Magdalena Carrasco; and Xavier Campos, Chair of the San Jose Planning Commission. This forum was organized and sponsored by People Acting in Community Together (PACT), the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the Service, Immigration Rights and Education Network (SIREN). Background: Xavier is Council member Nora Campos’ brother. He is 43 years old and works as a policy aid for supervisor George Shirakawa. He attended Overfelt High School and is a graduate of San Jose State. “My goal is to make District 5 thrive during this recession,” Campos told East Side residents. “I will also focus on public safety.” Magdalena Carrasco is the daughter of immigrant parents and has worked with both victims and perpetrators of domestic violence. “I have lived in District 5 for 21 years and have seen how the people of this district have suffered,” Carrasco said. “They have lost their homes and their businesses. I will work to see that they do not suffer anymore.” J. Manuel Herrera is also the son of immigrant parents and has served as a Trustee for the East Side Union High School District for 20 years. “I am committed to seeing that all of the children in our community succeed in life,” Herrera said. Aaron Resendez has been a teamster and is dedicated to the success of small business in East San Jose. “Our businesses have suffered long enough and it is time for a change,” Resendez said. Business Issues: Several residents criticized Nora Campos for allowing companies like Walgreens and Target to move into the district and driving out small businesses. Xavier defended his sister’s decision by saying, “These companies have provided our community with several jobs which provided healthcare for their employees. If anything, we need more companies like these in this district.” But the other candidates disagreed with what Campos has done to small businesses in the district. “It’s an outrage how sweetheart deals have hurt our communities,” Herrera said. “The developers have taken money from our district and it is time for this to stop.” Immigration and Police Relations Issues: These two issues concern many residents of District 5. However, the candidates did not seem to differ in their campaign platforms. All pledged to work with the police to improve relations with the community and all pledge to protect immigrant rights and to make sure they feel safe in the district. OS ANGELES - PBS News Hour, the New York Times, and the Investigative Reporting Program at the University of California, Berkeley, released an in-depth investigation over the weekend. Among other findings the report indicated DUI checkpoints in the state disproportionately target undocumented immigrants and raised questions about the automatic seizure and impoundment of vehicles from unlicensed drivers verses those cited for driving under the influence. While most cars impounded for DUI can be picked up the following day, the 30-day impoundment unlicensed drivers face generates significant revenue for the towing companies and the cities that they contract with. State Senator Cedillo was interviewed for the PBS News Hour segment and commented, "Cities are exploiting a broken immigration system, exploiting broken state laws, taking advantage and exploiting the most vulnerable members of our society." Cedillo has championed issuing driver's licenses to all drivers regardless of immigration status, for over a decade. He's presented versions of the bill, which adhere to the 9/11 Commission's Federal Real ID Act and include some of the most stringent security measures for a driving license in the nation. For Cedillo, licensing all drivers is the most direct means to improve public safety on our streets and highways. The Senator has also questioned the legality of automatically seizing the vehicle of an unlicensed driver on the sole charge of being stopped without a license. The practice has been questioned in courts with some cities modifying their handling of such citations. A 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruling deemed the practice unconstitutional in certain instances and a second case is pending in federal courts. That case looks into the automatic 30-day impound of the vehicle, longer than the period for a DUI citation. The joint report by PBS, the New York Times and the University of California, Berkeley found that in recent years the number of DUI checkpoints have increased significantly with many of the stops being staged in communities with high immigrant populations. The ratio for seizure of cars from an unlicensed driver to a driver cited for a DUI on average is 11 to 15 cars for unlicensed to one DUI per fiscal year. Here in Southern California the study found that in Montebello that ration was 60 to 1. In addition, the cars seized from unlicensed drivers are automatically subject to a 30-day impound, while a driver cited for a DUI in many cases can pick up the vehicle the next day. The study points out revenue generated from the 30-day impounds can be significant for the towing companies and the cities who they have contracts with.

os retenes no solo aterrorizan a las familias sino que también las lleva a una pérdida económica irrecuperable. ¿A dónde va el dinero de los retenes? Además de demostrarse que las personas indocumentadas son el blanco en los retenes un reporte realizado por el Programa de Periodismo de Investigación de la Universidad de California, Berkeley, ha des cubierto que en el 2009, los retenes generan un estimado de $ 40 millones por gastos de remolque y multas de la policía estatal. Las ciudades como Oakland, San Jose, San Rafael, Hayward y Redwood City dividen los ingresos con las compañías de remolque. El diario New York Times explica en un extenso artículo los detalles sobre retenes en dife rentes ciudades de California. Por su parte El Observador a nivel local ha venido reportando en los últimos dos años las injusticias de los retenes y la odisea que tienen que enfrentar familias indocumentadas. Luis Zavala residente de San José ayudó a su sobrino para sacar su auto cuando fue incautado por la policía de San José. "Esto ha sido un costo muy grande para la familia. Dejar a mi sobrino sin vehículo por 30 días es injusto. ¿dónde están los conductores ebrios? ¿Son los retenes un negocio?, esto devasta a la familia, parece una redada" explica Zavala. Zavala dijo que en noviembre del año pasado su sobrino fue detenido por una oficial quien sospechó que era menor de edad. Al no tener licencia se le quitó el vehículo. A continuación los gastos que hace una persona que pierde el vehículo y que debe ser multiplicado por el número de vehículos incautados cada vez que hacen un retén en San José.

Sin embargo la persona que no tiene licencia está obligado a dejar su vehículo por 30 días. La oficina del Senador Cedillo explica que esto está generando ingresos significativos para las empresas de remolque y las ciudades. Cedillo dice además que "Las ciudades son la explotación de un sistema roto de inmigración, que se aprovecha y explota a los miembros más vulnerables de nuestra sociedad". El senador ha cuestionado la legalidad de la incautación de forma automática del vehículo de un conductor sin licencia por el simple hecho de no tener licencia. La práctica ha sido cuestionada en los tribunales en algunas ciudades y un Tribunal 9 no. del Circuito de Apelaciones considera que la práctica es inconstitucional y actualmente está pendiente en los tribunales federales "los 30 días" a que están obligados a pagar. Cedillo ha defendido la expedición de licencias de conducir a todos los conductores independientemente de su condición migratoria, por más de una década. Se presentaron versiones del proyecto de ley federal que se adhieren a la Comisión 9-11 de la Ley Real ID y se incluyen algunas de las medidas de seguridad más estrictas para obtener una licencia de conducción de la nación. Para Cedillo, las licencias de todos los conductores es el medio más directo que tenemos que mejorar la seguridad pública en nuestras carreteras y autopistas.
Ebrios vs indocumentados PBS News Hour, El New York Times y el Programa de Investigación de la Universidad de California indicaron que las personas indocumentados son el blanco de estos retenes que tienen por objetivo atrapar a conductores ebrios pero que quitan desproporcionadamente los vehículos a los indocumentados. La investigación cuestiona el hecho que exis tan más autos levantados que el arresto de conductores ebrios. Esta investigación coincide con los reportes que hemos venido trabajando en los últimos años a nivel local en la ciudad de San José. El Observador publicó en diciembre el número de carros incautados en los últimos retenes. Desde mayo de 2008 a la fecha se han aga rrado más conductores sin licencias que conductores ebrios. La relación de la incautación de los vehículos de un conductor sin licencia de conducir antes por un DUI en promedio es de 11 a 15 vehículos sin licencia para uno de DUI por año fiscal. En el sur de California, el estudio encontró que en Montebello la ración era de 60 a 1. En San José la mayoría de los retenes se hacen en el Distrito 5.

l Alcalde de San José Chuck Reed anunció en su cuarto discurso de gobierno que a nivel global se han vivido momentos bastante difíciles que han puesto en aprietos económicos a la ciudad del Valle de Silicio. "Construyento una base para el futuro" fue el título de su discurso anual en el cual abordó el tema del presupuesto, creación de trabajo y seguridad pública. "San jose enfrenta un caída presupuestal de aproximadamente 100 millones de dólares en el año fiscal que empieza el 1ero. de Julio de 2010 y que va a afectar el presupuesto de los parques, bibliotecas, centros comunitarios y programas de recreación. Asi mismo Reed exhortó a los sindicatos de la ciudad a trabajar con la administración de San José a fin de reducir el costo de los empleados.
"San José es la capital de Silicon Valley, el centro del mundo de la innovación. Nuestras industrias seguirán creando puestos de trabajo e invertirán en la innovación, las instalaciones y equipos. La pregunta es: ¿lo está haciendo en San José?" se preguntó el alcalde. "Miles de residentes de San José han perdido sus empleos en los últimos doce meses. Nuestro pueblo necesita trabajo. A medida que la nación emerge de la recesión, debemos hacer todo lo posible para capturar los empleos y los ingresos fiscales que nuestras industrias líderes van a crear". En materia de seguridad el Alcalde elogió el tremendo esfuerzo del Departamento de Policía y los bomberos. Reiteró que San José sigue siendo una ciudad segura y como prueba está la reducción de homicidios. Afirmó que van a continuar trabajando en los asuntos del uso de fuerza pero no es justo responsabilizar al Departamento de la Policía en su totalidad basado en un pe-

La corta vida de Tutankamón Miami, Florida

na investigación forense sin precedentes, liderada por el renombrado egiptólogo Zahi Hawass, ha logrado revelar la identidad de los padres y los abuelos del faraón Tutankamón, la causa de su muerte y nuevos detalles de su reinado. Bisbal anuncia el nacimiento de su hija Madrid, (Notimex).l cantante español David Bisbal anunció el nacimiento de su hija Ella, quien nació la víspera en un hospital de Miami, Florida, fruto de su noviazgo con Elena Tablada, que al igual que la pequeña se encuentra en buen estado de salud. En un comunicado emitido por el artista a través de su compañía disquera en España, explicó que la pareja se encuentra muy feliz de dar la bienvenida al mundo a Ella Bisbal Tablada, quien nació con un peso de tres kilogramos 100 gramos. azatlán, (Notimex).- María de Jesús Lizárraga y Joel Lizárraga, madre e hijo, dueños de Banda El Recodo, destacaron que la agrupación ha superado expectativas en cuanto al éxito, al grado de convertirse en un atractivo turístico. Ambos coincidieron que: "No sólo tenemos esa dicha de que en el estado de Sinaloa, y en especial en Mazatlán, se le reconozca a El Recodo como un ente cultural sino también como semillero de nuevas voces y el motivo para que surjan otras agrupaciones de música de viento".

an José, CA-The Mexican Heritage Corporation (MHC), producer of the annual San José Mariachi and Mexican Heritage Festival, announced new additions to the festival's production staff, naming Dan Guerrero as Festival Creative Producer. On the local level, MHC has added to its team San José event production veteran Chris Esparza of Giant Creative as the Concert Production Manager, and Fil Maresca of Filco as the Outdoor Feria Production Manager. In addition, Guerrero will direct and stage the festival's mariachi gala. The festival also announced a new arrangement with Live Nation to produce the event's second annual rock tribute to Cesar Chavez. Guerrero, based in Los Angeles, is a highly acclaimed independent producer of diverse programming for network and cable television and of non-broadcast international arts and culture events at such prestigious venues as the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles, the National Hispanic Cultural Center in Albuquerque and the Cité de la Musique in Paris, France. Chris Esparza's Giant Creative has produced local events in San José for over 20 years, most recently launching Left Coast Live, San Jose's festival of live contemporary music.

"Arredondo debería retirarse" M éxico, (Notimex).- Iracundo, no tanto por la derrota 0-1 de último minuto frente a Cruz Azul, sino por la labor del juez central del partido Germán Arredondo, el director técnico del Morelia, Tomás Boy, explotó contra éste al señalar que debería renunciar. "Es a cada rato, en cuartos de final (del Apertura 2009) contra Santos se comió dos penaltis, ¿es algo personal?. No lo sé. Y luego me anda buscando para pedirme disculpas, eso no se hace. Para mí (el silbante Germán Arredondo) se tiene que retirar". Desde su arribo a la sala de prensa del estadio Azul, el timonel se quejó de la labor del nazareno, al señalar que a los celestes les permitió hacer gran cantidad de faltas y no las juzgó de igual manera. Ello al hacer referencia a que el volante cruzazulino "Israel López cometió más de diez faltas y no le sacó una tarjeta", mientras en decisiones divididas siempre señaló a favor de Cruz Azul, y que no es la primera vez que las marcaciones son contrarias a los suyos. Expuso que el examen sobre la labor de los árbitros "no me corresponde, esa es labor de ustedes (medios de comunicación), pero cada vez que vengo aquí si Morelia disputa el balón es falta a favor de Cruz Azul. Uno quiere hacer un equipo grande, que trabaje y nos represente bien, pero va uno a tener que tolerar estas cosas". Por primera vez en la historia del torneo la "legión azteca", con 49 miembros distribuidos en varios equipos, superó en número a los jugadores italianos, cuya presencia se redujo a 45; más atrás quedaron los brasileños con 26 representantes. Un total de 16 escuadras compuestas por 373 deportistas de 65 naciones diferentes se disputarán este torneo en las canchas del oratorio San Pietro, a unos metros del Vaticano. ixed Martial Arts (MMA) seems to be the newest craze in sports. Events are held on a weekly basis and MMA apparel can be seen on just about anyone. For some, MMA may seem like a hobby. But for others, it is a lifelong passion. Raul Castillo has been training in martial arts his whole life and is determined to be a top contender in the 185-pound weight class. On Friday, February 26, Castillo will battle Yancy Medeiros at StrikeForce's "Challengers" event at the San Jose Civic Auditorium. EO: How old are you and how long have you been a professional fighter? Castillo: I am 25 and I have been a professional fighter since 2006. I am from Half moon Bay. EO: What is your fighting style like? Castillo: I am a Ju-Jitsu Black Belt. My specialty is my ground game. I like to take my opponents to the ground and get them to submit. I have also studied Karate up to the age of 17. EO: How does it feel to be undefeated in your MMA career? Castillo: It feels good. I train hard and concentrate on one fight at a time. I put lots of heart into every fight I am in. EO: What was it like to tryout for the UFC Ultimate Fighter? Castillo: It was a good experience. I learned about the business and what it was like to be a character. Right now I am happy being able to compete and work with StrikeForce. EO: What do you think about your opponent and how have you prepared for him? Castillo: Well, he came down from the 205-division and he has a very strong ground game. He also has heavy hands and will do his best to resist any take down. I have been training very hard for him. EO: What are your goals in MMA? Castillo: To continue to be able to compete at the highest level in my weight class and to one day become a champion. EO: What's next for you?
