Workers Sue Su Vianda ore than 50 grocery workers abruptly fired last June have sued the supermarket chain Su Vianda, its parent company and the board of directors for unpaid wages after the chain filed bankruptcy. A $500,000 taxpayer investment from San Jose was also lost in that bankruptcy. The Bay Area Justice for Mercado Workers Coalition in conjunction with San Francisco-based Instituto Laboral de la Raza, organized more than 50 Su Vianda workers, who are being represented by Instituto Laboral de la Raza's general counsel, Marc L. TerBeek, an Oakland attorney. They are suing not only the listed owner of the defunct ethnic supermarket chain, Kimomex, but also Kimomex President, Al Lujan, the Kimomex board of directors, Kimomex's parent company, Pacific Community Ventures, and its board of directors, on the basis that Kimomex's efforts to evade responsibility for their claims by filing bankruptcy revealed that it was a shell organization that did not maintain any books or records and which could not account

M

for any revenues it had generated. Among the unaccounted for revenues was a $500,000 investment the City of San Jose made in 2008 with taxpayer funds. The Su Vianda employees are also considering a qui tam action to recover the City of San Jose's investment if the city elects not to pursue the matter on its own behalf. Before Su Vianda shut down its operations in June, the Justice for Mercado Workers Coalition denounced the unfair anti-consumer practices Su Vianda engaged in. Coalition members revealed during one press conference dozens of expired food products Su Vianda was selling – including baby formula that had been expired for 251 days prior to the day of purchase. The Justice for Mercado Workers Coalition is an entity integrated by local organizations and individuals focused on improving the working conditions of the estimated 9,000 Bay Area Mercado workers. Members of the coalition include interfaith organizations, grassroots groups and labor unions among others.

Anti-Immigrant Politicians Undermine Public Safety and Community Policing

W

Security is expanding the role of state and local police in immigration enforcement despite concerns raised by local police. Internal DHS documents and memos, obtained by the National Day Laborer Organizing Network, Center for Constitutional Rights, and the Cardozo School of Law, illustrate a shocking pattern of coercion and misinformation on the part of Secure Communities officials, in order to meet their goal of having all state and local police agencies participating in the program by 2013. They also show a reckless disregard for the program’s impact on community policing, concerns that have been raised by local governments in some locations. Although federal-local “partnership” programs like Secure Communities and 287(g) are supposed to focus on serious criminals, they cast a much broader net. Nearly 80% of the people deported via Secure Communities and half of those targeted under 287(g) had no criminal record or were charged with low-level offenses, such as traffic violations. When immigrants are whisked away for deportation after being stopped for a broken taillight, it sends a clear message to the community: police are on the hunt for immigrants, not serious criminals. Clearly, state and local law enforcement leaders are right to worry about the impact these programs have on their relationship with the community and their ability to fight crime. “State and local police need to be able to focus on their number one priority: protecting the public from dangerous criminals. Rather than leaning on state and local police to round up immigrants who aren’t criminals, DHS should either reform these programs to focus on people who have been convicted of serious offenses, or scrap them altogether. And politicians at all levels should stop playing politics with the issue, and advance a real solution through comprehensive immigration reform,” Sharry concluded. (Opinion piece provided by America’s Voice)

Ocurrielcias

ashington - As certain politicians offer up sound bites rather than real solutions to the problem of illegal immigration, it turns out that the policies they are pushing are actually undermining public safety. By coercing local police into doing the federal government’s job on immigration enforcement, they are undermining successful community policing strategies and diverting law enforcement resources away from criminals. “It is unconscionable that politicians would put community policing and public safety at risk in order to score political points on immigration. When law enforcement leaders think a state-based immigration law or federal program will actually hurt their ability to fight crime and protect the public, politicians should pay attention. When they don’t, it shows that they are more interested in getting attention for themselves than helping the community solve problems,” said Frank Sharry, Executive Director of America’s Voice. State and local law enforcement leaders have been raising objections to anti-immigrant state bills like Arizona’s SB 1070 since last year. As a profile of former Sacramento Police Chief Arturo Venegas recently highlighted, “politicians are making it harder for the cops to do their jobs.” Venegas and other police veterans know that immigrants will stop reporting crimes and information to the police if doing so could lead to deportation. Law enforcement leaders also oppose diverting their limited resources to paperwork violations instead of serious, violent crimes. As Reggie Lloyd, the head of South Carolina’s State Law Enforcement Division put it: “Do you want us to chase the guy who cut his wife’s head off or is in MS-13 or dealing drugs, or do you want us to get the guy on top of the roof nailing shingles?” While Arizona Governor Jan Brewer ignored the concerns of law enforcement and signed S.B. 1070 anyways, politicians in states like South Dakota and Colorado are starting to listen. At the federal level, though, new evidence shows that the Department of Homeland

Toles cartoon first published in the Washington Post, then republished in the editorial section of the San Jose Mercury News last Sunday, February 20, 2011, crystallized a series of disjointed observations which I have made since 2001. The cartoon depicted a group of people, labeled “UNEMPLOYED’, standing before a factory building (labeled “the economy’) whose spokesperson said, “Don’t take this the wrong way, but we discovered it (the economy) works better without you.” Nothing could be further from reality and the truth. The unemployed need jobs to earn money which permits them to participate in the economy as CONSUMERS. Many ‘news items’ are distractions that prevent us all from facing the real policy issues that are beginning to become evident to those who are willing to view our domestic economy realistically. Consider the following: Historically, agriculture has become so productively efficient that today it takes about 3 persons to grow the food consumed by 100 residents. Likewise, today factories in which investments have been made to utilize robotics, cybernetics, and automation, can produce goods while providing employment to fewer members of the local labor force. The challenging public policy issue to be addressed sooner rather than later is ‘When products can be produced with fewer employees, how does the unemployed labor force obtain the funds needed to be responsible for their customary financial responsibilities? For a head of a family, the money to pay the rent or mortgage, put food on the table, educate the children, provide for clothing, furniture, an automobile, etc. requires gainful employment providing a ‘living wage scale.’ The American consumer economy. which has made America the economic and military superpower on this earthly globe, was the outcome of business providing jobs to the domestic labor force while earning profits. Henry Ford and Andrew Carnegie understood this relationship very well….they provided good wages to their employees as well as jobs. An example is the U.S. Steel mills, Gary, Indiana where during World War II, fourteen blast furnaces produced pig iron. That product was fabricated into all manner of steel alloy products in factories employing 360,000 steel workers. Today, about 60,000 steelworkers tend two automated super-sized blast furnaces which produce more pig iron than did the 14 original blast furnaces. Simplistically, 300,000 individual working CONTRIBUTORS: MARIO JIMENEZ HECTOR CURRIEL CINTHIA RODRIGUEZ

positions no longer exist or are necessary. In the past, with the growing domestic service industry, an individual worker could find another job in another field after some vocational retraining. No so today, because the captains of industry are focused on profits rather than ‘profits and employment for our domestic labor force’. Using information technology, many white collar jobs are being serviced by employees in offshore locations. And many items are now made in India, South East Asia, and China where trained labor is cheaper and not unionized (i.e., no collective bargaining rights). In addition, productivity in America is increasing as are profits being reported. So fewer workers are needed to produce goods. The service industry can do only so much to abosrb additional labor. The question not being addressed is “How does our American society provide for those who remain unemployed? Charitable entitlements administered by government, local nonprofit, faith-based community organizations, and other mechanisms need to be developed, examined, evaluated, etc. The only thing happening now for the unemployed is their unemployment allocation which is on occasion threatened by Congressional inaction. What will our new economy do for the ordinary citizen? Right now the focus of capitalistic dogma is ‘profits’. An additional realization for capitalists is that for a business cycle to exist, the masses need a ‘living income’ (i.e., money) that provides for the necessities of life along with some discretionary money where the consumer makes his/her spending choices. This complex challenge is not being faced. What is being attempted is the repair of an existing American consumer economy that is severely challenged by the global competition and by low cost skilled labor elsewhere. Until this challenging current situation is addressed in a holistic manner by public policy makers, union leadership, and the captains of industry, no effective corrective action can be initiated. Meanwhile, many are suffering from this current economic downturn. Our entire society needs to be informed so as to understand what is going on. Global competition from developing economies offshore need to be part of this analysis and re-direction. The current American domestic economy will not correct itself without the understanding by the labor force and the guidance of public policy that benefits us all. We have ignored the signs of economic change long enough and it has hurt many,∆ EL OBSERVADOR was founded in 1980 to serve the informational needs of the Hispanic community in the San Francisco Bay Area, with special focus on San Jose, the capital of Silicon Valley. Hotel Workers Call for Boycott of Hyatt Regency Santa Clara; Spirited Picket and Rally Draws Hundreds (Santa Clara, California)

H

otel workers, along with clergy, labor, and com-

munity supporters, held a raucous protest this afternoon outside the Hyatt Regency Santa Clara, announcing the launch of a boycott of the

property. The Grand Hyatt is owned and operated by Hyatt Hotels Corporation [NYSE:H] In 2009, it conducted an initial

public offering that raised more than $1 billion for its principal owners, the Pritzker family. “Hyatt doesn’t respect our rights.” said Leoncia Rodriguez, a housekeeper who has worked at the Hyatt Regency for seven years. “They won’t commit to letting us organize freely, without intimidation. In the meantime, we are overworked and we get hurt. This is why we are calling a boycott and letting customers know: Don’t eat, meet, or sleep at the Hyatt Regency Santa Clara!” The boycott launch comes after Hyatt Regency workers have organized for over two years to secure a fair process in their attempt to form a union. Workers have called for customers to honor the boycott at the property by refusing to book rooms, hold events, or spend any money at the Hyatt

Regency Santa Clara until a fair process is secured. “Hyatt workers just want a fair and democratic process. Hyatt has had plenty of time to decide to be fair, but they haven’t budged.” said Enrique Fernandez, business manager of Local 19. “This boycott turns up the heat on Hyatt. The company can end the boycott today just by agreeing to let their employees organize freely through a card-check neutrality agreement.” Locally, Hyatt has previously signed card-check neutrality agreements in San Francisco and San Mateo counties. Hyatt Regency Santa Clara workers began organizing in 2008 because they face excessive workloads, low wages, lack of respect, and a lack of quality, affordable health care. For example, housekeepers are

expected to clean at least 16 rooms in a single 8-hour shift, making up to 32 beds with 96 pillows and 128 sheets. Many housekeepers surveyed at the Hyatt Santa Clara reported daily workplace pain or injury. Further, the average weekly wages of non-unionized hotel and motel workers in Santa Clara County is a mere $538.00. Hyatt has distinguished itself for its pursuit of profit at any price. In Boston, for example, Hyatt fired all housekeepers at its three non-union hotels, replacing them with outsourced workers paid about half of what the fired workers had earned. The company’s CEO, meanwhile, was paid $6.7 million in compensation in 2008, and its chairman received a bonus of $1.4 million.

Seven Top Retirement Tips for Tax Time

By Rick Rodgers “There are more ways to save for retirement than just taking advantage of your company’s 401K, which today is almost the equivalent of stuffing your savings in a mason jar and burying it under your porch,” said Rodgers. “People need to get creative and really take advantage of all the different ways the law allows to save money now, earn more money tomorrow and have more to retire on later.” Rodger’s advice for tax time this year includes: • The average tax refund for 2009 was $3,035. If this was saved each year for 30 years it could provide a significant part of your retirement income. Better yet, reduce

your tax withholding at work by $253 per month and save the same amount monthly. Monthly compounding instead of annual compounding grows even faster. • Do not defer your income in a 401(k) plan if you are in a 15 percent tax bracket unless your employer matches the amount you save. Save the money in a Roth IRA instead. Tax brackets will probably never be lower than they are now and there’s a good chance they will be higher. Distributions from a Roth IRA will be tax free in retirement. • Money saved outside of a retirement account should be invested in stock mutual funds. Most of the earnings on stock funds are either in the form of qualified dividends or long term capital gains. Both types of income are taxed at 0 percent in a 15 percent tax bracket and a maximum of 15 percent in higher tax brackets. • Tax-free funds currently offer returns comparable to taxable funds. The average yield on intermediate tax-free fund was 3.6 percent in December versus an intermediate taxable fund at 3.9 percent. • Say no to higher health insurance premiums. Start a Health Savings Account with a high deductible policy. The maximum deductible contribution is $6,150 for 2011 for families and $3,050 for single coverage. Distributions are tax free if used for medical expenses and balances can be carried over from year to year. Premiums on a high deductible health insurance policy are typically half the cost of a traditional policy. • Taxpayers that are age 70 with IRAs can give money directly to a charity from their IRA this year. Making charitable gifts this way keeps the taxable income off your tax return. This could lower the amount of your Social Security benefits that are subject to tax. • If you took money

out of a retirement account before age 59, you will owe tax on the distribution but you may be able to avoid the penalty. There are six exceptions to the penalty. Find out if you qualify for any of them. “The law allows people many ways to save money, so while those filing the quick and dirty tax forms may get a quick refund, they may be shortchanging themselves in the future,” Rodgers said. “There are so many more opportunities out there to stretch

your retirement savings. A little research today could mean a lot less worrying about retirement later.” Rick Rodgers is a retirement counselor and author of the new book The New ThreeLegged Stool: A Tax Efficient Approach To Retirement Planning (www.TheNewThreeLeggedStool.com), tax time is a time for planning how to have more gold for your golden years.

“People need to get creative and really take advantage of all the different ways the law allows to save money now, earn more money tomorrow and have more to retire on later.”

United Way Silicon Valley’s Free Credit Coaching Program Can Help Improve Credit Scores

S

AN JOSE, Calif.– Financial experts call January “credit hangover” time, when many Americans suffer the ill effects of charging too much on their credit cards during the holidays. According to a Consumer Reports poll taken in October 2010, 13.6 million people were still paying off credit card charges from the 2009 holiday season. That lingering holiday debt can sink your credit score. January is a good time to get your credit on track and United Way Silicon Valley can help. United Way’s free Credit Coaching program provides volunteer mentors who work one-on-one with participants to help them improve their credit scores. “A decent credit score is needed for financial stability,” said Carole Leigh Hutton, president and CEO of United Way Silicon Valley. “Without it, you

may not have access to lower-cost conventional loans. A low credit score can even affect employment opportunities.” Credit scores are used by lenders, landlords and increasingly by employers to assess a person’s worthiness, not only for credit or a loan, but also to rent a home or to get a job. For many lower-income individuals and families, their credit score is a significant barrier to accessing resources that could help them become more financially stable. For example, people with lower credit scores often pay much higher interest rates for loans, dramatically increasing the cost of a loan.

gram is part of United Way Silicon Valley’s effort to improve financial stability. The program is an extension of United Way’s Bank on San Jose, which helps “unbanked” households open checking and savings accounts, build a credit history, gain access to lower-cost credit sources, and invest in their future. People who attend United Way’s Bank on Basics financial education class, offered in English and Spanish, are eligible for the Credit Coaching program. During the year-

long program, participants meet with their credit coaches monthly for the first three months and then quarterly after that. “I maxed out my credit cards due to having to cover my basic needs as a single mom of a teenage daughter,” said Lourdes Robles, an administrative assistant who is working with a credit coach through United Way’s program. “Now I find myself without credit cards and trying to learn how to budget. I’m working with a credit coach because I want to

learn how to budget effectively and save more,”

herself in the same predicament I’m in now.”

With the help of their coaches, participants like Robles set financial goals and create a plan for achieving those goals. They also learn how to use a number of free online credit services to monitor their scores as well as other financial management tools.

United Way Silicon Valley is leading a movement to improve community conditions by helping local people become financially stable and independent. To drive positive change, United Way Silicon Valley helps people help themselves by identifying critical needs, mobilizing the caring power of the community, and aligning resources to achieve the best solutions. United Way is focused on the building blocks for a good life: income, education and health. For more information about United Way Silicon Valley, visit www.uwsv.org.

“Once I achieve these goals, I know I’m going to have a sense of relief because I will be in control of my money and it’s not going to be controlling me,” Robles said. “Added to that, my daughter will be learning from me. I’ll be leading by example and she won’t find

Advisory Council Formed on Bullying

S

AN JOSE, CA – An Advisory Council to eradicate bullying in county schools has been formed by Santa Clara County Board of Education President Joseph Di Salvo. "As a former elementary and middle school principal, this has been a subject that has touched me in many divergent ways," Di Salvo wrote to the board as an information item at its Feb. 16 meeting. "The threat of being bullied is one of the number one reasons for students staying at home." The entire memo can be found on the Santa Clara County Office of Education website, linked within the Feb. 16 board agenda. Di Salvo has asked John Lindner, a

Strong Community Support for New Charter High School

S

upporters of Communitas Charter High School are looking ahead to the March 2 meeting of the Santa Clara County Board of Education for the decision on the charter petition submitted in December. The Communitas Charter program is an innovative and groundbreaking model of high school education that offers a new option for Santa Clara County students. Members of the public are encouraged to attend and add their voices to the school's growing following. At least 70 people attended the charter's public hearing on February 2, including many prospective students, wearing bright neon stickers and carrying flags with the words "Communitas Now!" More than 20 speakers stood up to advocate for board approval the of the charter. Communitas will open its first campus in Santa Clara County in fall 2011 with grades 9 and 10. The school will add one grade each year after that until it is fully enrolled with grades 9-12. The school plans additional locations as the demand for its program expands. "Communitas offers a truly unique alternative to traditional public high schools in the County," says Stephen Fiss, the interim Executive Director of Communitas. As the founding Executive Director of Discovery Charter School and a Communitas founder, Steve has an extensive background in high school and district management. "We have the opportunity to teach students with proven ed-

ucational best practices. We are committed to fostering a more personalized and engaging school experience for students that will support the achievement of all students." The educational program combines academics with real-world projects and relationships; adult mentorships, student-driven integrated curriculum, internships, and service learning. Communitas students will encounter the depth of learning, and how it relates meaningfully to them in their lives. Communitas Charter High School is a local initiative by a group of progressive educators and parents from all over Santa Clara County to offer a collaborative, integrated classroom experience where each student is known and grows in enthusiasm, curiosity, and wisdom. This distinctive educational program will better prepare students for college through personalized inquiry and self-reflection, and in-depth cultural study. The name "Communitas" refers to an anthropological concept based on the work of Victor Turner: "an intense feeling of social togetherness and belonging, standing at the threshold of the rite of passage into adulthood. In this free and connected place, young people are able to express their extraordinary capacities for learning, caring, determination and creativity." Un Milagro en el Área de la Bahía Santa María Magdalena Por Rosario Vital El Observador

J

In Hospitals, Safety Begins With Communication (NewsUSA) ia Lee, the child of Hmong-speaking parents, died as much from miscommunication as from illness. When Lia was a few months old, she started experiencing seizures. Twice, she was misdiagnosed with pneumonia because her parents couldn't describe her symptoms to her doctors. When she was finally diag-

L

nosed, she was prescribed a complex regime of medications that her parents couldn't understand how to administer. With doctors and parents unable to communicate, Lia experienced a grand mal seizure. Unfortunately, the Lees' experience is not uncommon. According to the 2000 Census, over 21 million Americans speak English less than "very well," and 22.5 percent of Asian and Pacific Islander speakers either don't speak English well or can't speak it at all. Some people have family members to help them, but that can lead to other problems. If a husband acts as an interpreter for his wife, the doctor will have difficulty asking her about spousal abuse. Even when family members mean well, they are not medical experts and may mistranslate or fail to report every symptom that the patient describes. In 2003 a study, researchers analyzed 13 patientdoctor encounters that involved an ad hoc translator, such as a nurse, social worker or sibling. On average, these translators made 31 mistakes per encounter. Seventy-seven percent of these errors could have had clinical consequences.

Hospitals can help avoid mistakes by using medical interpreters, or trained professionals who facilitate communication between patients and doctors. Hospitals are required to offer interpreters, but it's an unfunded mandate: only 13 states offer Medicaid reimbursement for interpreters. If healthcare reform truly aims to improve patient care, it must improve communication. Reimbursing hospitals for providing medical interpreters will not only save lives, but also prevent needless errors and reduce overall costs. "In addition to improving quality of care and patient safety, language services reimbursement would alleviate the financial burden faced by hospitals with a large population of Limited English Proficient patients." said Mursal Khaliif, senior director of multilingual services at Cambridge Health Alliance, a Harvard University Medical School Teaching Hospital in Cambridge, Mass. The International Medical Interpreter's Association has been leading the fight for reimbursement. For more information, visit www.imiaweb.org.

Is your home causing your health concerns?

(ARA) hen you get the sniffles - do you blame your allergies, or the air inside your house? Surprisingly, air pollution trapped inside your home

W

could be the cause of many of your family's health concerns especially if members suffer from asthma or allergies. Poor indoor air quality is a health threat. Indoor air is one the top five environmental

threats to the country, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. And in the winter months, your family is probably spending a lot more time inside, breathing in the polluted air.

Fecha Límite Para Inscripción a la Cobertura de Medicamentos de Receta de Medicare

E

Indoor air pollutants come from many different sources. The combustion fuels you use oil, gas, kerosene, coal and even wood - add chemicals to the air so do tobacco products. Pets and carpeting can add dander and dust particles to the air. And even the cleaning products you use can build up. Newer homes are built to be more air tight, which helps to keep the heating bill lower in the winter months, but does nothing to freshen the air inside the house. Minor health consequences from breathing poor quality indoor air include watery eyes, a scratchy throat and runny nose. But more serious consequences could show up after years of breathing in poor quality indoor air, and those include respiratory diseases, heart disease and even cancer, according to the EPA. You can clean the air inside your home to help reduce the pollutants, dust and dander in several ways: * Take a peek inside your air ducts. Use a flashlight and

mirror, or a digital camera to see if the walls of the ducts are coated in dust bunnies and grit. That build up of dust signals you need to have your heating and cooling system cleaned. Your heating unit will continuously circulate any dusty and dirty air throughout your home, so that your family is always breathing it in. Hiring a National Air Duct Cleaners Association member to clean your HVAC system will help you keep the air circulating throughout your home free of dust, pollen and dander. NADCA members must carry general liability insurance and must have at least one certified air systems cleaning specialist on staff. "Cleaning your ducts isn't something a do-it-yourselfer should try to tackle," says Bill Benito, board member of NADCA. "NADCA-recommended contractors will loosen contaminants with brushes and compressed air, then use negative pressure collection equipment to collect all the debris so

that nothing is blown into your living areas." Visit www.nadca.com to find a NADCA member near you. * Replace your furnace filter frequently, and use the highest efficiency filter recommended by the manufacturer of your heating and cooling system. * Run bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans when needed, and make sure these units circulate to the outdoors, rather than blowing back into the house. If you have the opportunity, take the covers off the fans and clean off the fan blades to help remove additional particles from the air. * When the temperatures warm up, open up your screened windows and doors to help circulate the air inside your house. Nobody likes having a runny nose or scratchy throat, and if your family members are exhibiting these symptoms, you may need to review the air quality in your home. Sigue la restricción a los Tucanes

T

C

iting multiple sources, Kara Swisher of All Things D revealed the date on Tuesday. Though a venue has not been named, it is expected to be held at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, where previous Apple media events have been held. Given that the event is a little over a week away, Apple is expected to send out invitations to the event soon. Other details on the event, including potential details on the rumored "iPad 2," were not given. The first-generation iPad was announced in late January of 2010, ahead of a U.S.-only launch of the Wi-Fi model in early April. The 3G model and international launches came out over the following weeks and months, on its way to sales of 15 million units in the calendar year. The iPad 2 is widely expected to be thinner and lighter with a faster processor, more

RAM, and a camera for FaceTime video chat. It is also expected to have advanced graphics capabilities to allow playback of high-definition video and superior 3D graphics. As onlookers await the iPad 2, speculation has already begun that Apple could unveil a different version of the iPad, perhaps with more features, as early as this September. The release of a so-called iPad 3 would align the device with the annual announcement of new iPods just before the holiday buying season. Earlier Tuesday, AppleInsider exclusively reported that Apple has scheduled an "all hands" meeting for its retail employees in the coming days. Employees were asked to sign a non-disclosure agreement, and those who do not sign cannot partake in the meetings, expected to be held at individual stores on Sunday.

Bringing home a 3-D TV?

What you should know before you buy (ARA) veryone, it seems, is eager for 3-D. It's a fad that's had its heyday more than once in pop culture, but this time all signs point to 3-D finding staying power in American theaters and homes. If you have any doubt that 3-D is hot, consider the fact that more than 100 movies - from children's animated films to big-budget sci-fi offerings - were released in 3-D in theaters and on DVD in 2009 and 2010. And weigh the fact that nearly every major TVmaker has at least one 3-D set on the market. In fact, manufacturers are banking that Americans will embrace 3-D in their home viewing experience just as they did flat screens, high definition and Internet access. A 3-D TV may well be the high-tech investment your family opts for in 2011, but before you buy, here are a few things you should know - and consider about 3-D television: Cost considerations As with any new technology, 3-D TVs appeared on the market at higher prices than what you would pay for a comparable quality 2-D high definition set. While you could easily find large flat-screens for $1,000 or less in 2010, most 3-D units sold for upward of $2,000. Prices are coming down, however, and industry watchers predict they'll drop lower this year as the technology improves and manufacturers try to stimulate consumer interest. Many manufacturers have announced lower prices on their 3-D sets for 2011. "Prices for 3-D TVs will definitely go down this year as our production costs have been dropping with improved technology," says Skott Ahn, LG's chief technology officer, who also predicts that 3-D technol-

E

ogy will become mainstream in a few years. What this means for you, the consumer, is that this year you can probably pick up a quality 3-D TV for about what you would expect to pay for a good 2-D set. 3-D Glasses Current 3-D TV technology requires viewers to wear a pair of 3-D glasses to enjoy the technology. Most 3-D TVs use active 3-D glasses which contain a power source within the glasses. Expect to pay around $100 to $200 per pair of active 3-D glasses. Some 3-D TV manufacturers are beginning to offer a passive 3-D technology. Passive 3-D glasses do not require a power source to view 3-D content, so they are lighter and cheaper. Despite some reports that "glasses-free" 3-D TV is set to come soon, most consumer electronic experts agree that the technology is several years away from being available to consumers. Viewing angle caveats If you've ever tried to watch a big game or movie on a 2-D LCD or LED TV with a large group of people, you've probably experienced the issue of limited viewing angle options. Because of the technology used to put the image on the screen, LCD and LED TVs don't always offer a good image from every viewing angle. The issue is even more relevant for 3-D TVs, according to Best-3DTVs.com. That's because 3-D TVs share the same viewing angle issues as some 2-D flat screens, but with the added challenge that 3-D glasses can also block light from the screen, lowering brightness and contrast. If you're also viewing the screen from an angle, all these factors can lead to a "very underwhelming 3-D viewing experi-

ence," the website points out. "Most industry experts argue that 3-D technology actually increases the viewing angle problem," says Jim Wohlford, vice president of Sanus, makers of TV mounts and accessories. "Early 3-D reviews indicate a ghosting effect around objects on the screen when viewed from an angle." Fortunately, wall-mounting on a full-motion mount, which can resolve viewing angle issues for 2-D flat screens, is a good option for 3-D TVs as well. Products like the VisionMount VLF311 Super Slim Full-Motion Mount allow you to

maintain the sleek, low profile look of a flatscreen while still having the ability to move the set to whatever position or angle is best for your viewing needs. "By placing a TV on a full-motion mount, you can be sure you can always achieve the optimal viewing angle from any seat in the room," Wohlford says. "Full-motion mounts are available to accommodate all sizes of TVs, are easy to install and simple to use. They apply a lowtech, time-honored solution to one of the most common problems of our favorite high-tech toys."

Vergüenza por el Pachuca

P

(Foto Notimex)

No experience is necessary and leagues are played with soft no-sting balls, making it a fun adult sport for all skill levels. New-to-dodgeball players can learn the rules on

the first day of the season or at the open gyms. Full teams, small groups and individuals are encouraged to join. The cost for the season is $55 per person, which includes weekly 50minute games, a sweet league t-shirt and the chance to meet some awesome people. WDS also offers leagues throughout Los Angeles, Illinois, Maryland, Mississippi and New York, on varying weeknights, for both beginners and hardcore players, all followed by the opportunity to socialize with fellow players at local sponsoring pubs. Seven Trees Recreation Center is located at 3590 Cas Dr., San Jose, CA 90511. For more information, visit: http://dodgeball4ever.com/ba lls/staypuft-san-jose-home. ∆
