Calculador de beneficio por jubilación
E
Eliminating Birthright Citizenship Would Affect Everyone
A
ilar to the process used for children born abroad to military parents, missionaries, or employees of international companies. Whether or not a child born abroad is a U.S. citizen depends on the year the child was born, whether one or both of the parents were U.S. citizens, and whether the parents were married or unmarried at the time of one’s birth. Some children would immediately acquire U.S. citizenship, but others might have to naturalize to become citizens. Assessing citizenship is an arduous and expensive process. Currently, the State Department and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) charge a substantial fee to make derivative citizenship assessments. The current DHS fee is $460. Depending on the case, the process can take weeks or even years, and can require the production of numerous documents, including old historical records. Americans could be denied citizenship because of a mistake. Government agents and others at the state and local level responsible for issuing birth certificates would not have expertise in complicated citizenship laws and in the complexities of determining the immigration status of the parents. Many Americans could be denied citizenship due to a mistake or misunderstanding of the law. The implications of erroneously being denied citizenship would be huge. Big government “solutions” would be expensive. The U.S. government would have to create a large new bureaucracy responsible for determining the citizenship of all children born in the U.S., and would have to create a national registry of citizens and some sort of identification document to be used as proof of citizenship. This would be expensive. Δ (Information provided by Immigration Policy Center)

ttacks on birthright citizenship at the federal and state level are bound to take many forms—from outright repeal of the Fourteenth Amendment to refusal by states to issue birth certificates to children of undocumented immigrants. Whatever the tactic, attacks on birthright citizenship hurt everyone. Eliminating birthright citizenship would impose a significant burden on all Americans, who would no longer have an easy and inexpensive way to prove their citizenship. We have a simple, easy-to-use system. Throughout its history, the U.S. has had a simple, straight-forward way to determine citizenship. Anyone who is born on U.S. soil (with very few exceptions) is a U.S. citizen. The Fourteenth Amendment affirmed that this definition of citizenship could not be denied based on race, nationality, or family history. Our birth certificates are proof of our citizenship. If birthright citizenship were eliminated, U.S. citizens could no longer use their birth certificates as proof of citizenship. Everyone is affected. If birthright citizenship was eliminated, all American parents—not just immigrants— would have to determine the citizenship of their children. For some parents, this would be relatively simple. For others, it would be extremely cumbersome. Proving a child’s citizenship can be difficult. Establishing U.S. citizenship other than by birth in the U.S. is complex. Americans would have to prove that their children derive U.S. citizenship through one or both of their parents— a process that can be difficult for even experienced immigration attorneys. U.S. law with regard to derivative citizenship is extremely complex. Derivative Citizenship laws are complex. Proving a child’s citizenship would be sim-

iven the state of our national economy which was ‘in the making’ for the past 50 years of so, it is time to begin needed corrective measures. What the American people want and need is an affordable government working collaboratively with the private sector. Since the hot-button issue is available jobs, it is essential to establish a new mindset in heads of those who make policy and invest. The cost of government at all levels, local school districts, city, county, state and federal, is simply too much to pay with the current levels of revenues generated by the present economy. The simplest economic relationships are being violated at all levels. The net worth of any business is the difference between its assets and its debts. That is a static measure true for only a point in a market activity. Jobs today are diminished by automation and robotics. In addition, jobs go to the locale where the labor force is both educated, possesses the pertinent skills, and can be employed at the lowest cost. Today’s factories are being built offshore because the American work force expects and demands a living wage plus benefits which pay for medical care and retirement funds. An immediate way to reduce the cost of labor is to involve and engage employees in the payment of these benefits which really are deferred funding of future expected costs. Many individuals and governments simply never learn to live within their means. One has to admire City of San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed for advocating and supporting Measure V and Measure W. The issue being faced is that retirement contracts formulated in the past simply were not tenable because the costs involved were never fully determined nor funded. These contracts were set in place when the economy was much better than today. The City of San Jose has deferred retirement fund obligations which are unfunded. Organized labor has been very assertive about retaining these retirement fund obligations. There are incidences which are viewed as unrealistic and abusive. Recently a retired fire marshal who was to be paid 90% of the employed salary level, was rehired by the County of Santa Clara at full salary (about $250, 000 per year). This individual, under current practices, will be paid both a retirement benefit as well as the current salary (also at about

$250,000) for being the active on-the-job County Fire Marshall. While it may be argued that this individual earned his retirement and is earning the current salary, this particular case reveals that public employee pension funds need to be scrutinized and appropriate adjustments made. It also demonstrates that the management of human resources did not exert common sense. The employment of this high salaried individual needed to be accomplished with the requirement that employment be extended without payment of retirement funds. A professional who keeps working is simply not retired. Why should the taxpayers end up providing tax revenues which pay a ‘double-dipper’? Other factors to be considered and changed are the following: Why should an individual be entitled to retirement pay at age 55 after 30 years of service? Why not require that retirement pay be indexed to the current economy? No corporation (including government) can pay for obligations for which no escrow fund was established and used. That union contract which established these future obligations was never fully described nor implemented so therefore it does not exist. These local examples are repeated at state and federal levels when grouped in a category called entitlements. Some of these entitlements are not ‘transparent’ because of the practice of accounting for them ‘off the books’. If America is to re-establish an economy wherein 95% of the labor force is gainfully employed, the entire economic system must become known and transparent. And, if we are to continue to have a government that takes care of people (its true constituent), then the silent majority must begin to speak up on behalf of its own essential needs and interests. The entire economic system is out of balance today. The American public is justifiably cynical and disappointed in the self-interest behavior of its leadership, both in government and in the private business sector. Since we are all residing on one earth, engaged in one global economy, let us all begin corrective measures in ways that are fair, that distribute wealth (money) which enables the masses to participate as wage earners. Those wages need to be at a scale that permits and empowers the individual to make choices with availble discretionary funds. Too many today (14,000,000 or one in twenty) simply have no job and therefore are forced to rely on welfare. Let’s begin comrrective measures which produce the greater good...employment for the masses.Δ

Temporada de Impuestos
L

A

Do Travel Web Sites Offer the Best Bargains? B
Empieza bien el 2011: organiza tu negocio casero Por Jamie Sutherland Vicepresidente y Director General, Sage Simply Accounting
S
Puedes perder dinero y volver a ganarlo.
(NewsUSA) efore Americans hop aboard planes, they go online. According to the U.S. Travel Association, the Internet was the nation’s top-ranking source of travel information in 2009. Between travel agency Web sites and search engines, Americans saw little reason to call travel agencies or airlines. But do travel Web sites really offer the best deals? Many Web sites offer ridiculously low prices at first glance, like a $99 flight from New York City to London. But the price you see might not include taxes and other fees, which can increase costs quickly. In a 2004 Consumer Reports Webwatch research report, testers experienced repeated fare-jumping — the largest jump increased the ticket price by $748. Would-be travelers might also click on a good deal, only to find that, by the time they enter their information, the seat is no longer available. Travelers might also spend hours online comparison-shopping, only to find the best prices gone by the time they go to book. Others might struggle to find a reasonable price on the return flight. What is going on? “When you’re buying a ticket online, your seats aren’t confirmed until you enter your credit card information, so the seat can be lost while you type,” explains John Ferry, CEO of CheapTrips (www.cheaptripsandfreeairfare.com). “However, if you’re on the phone with one of our agents, they secure the price as they talk to you on the phone. You’re always better off speaking to a person.” Travel agents can also compare prices far faster than the average computer user — often closing deals within five minutes — and advise travelers on hidden fees, like those on checked-baggage. Ferry says that many Web sites do not publish the best prices. Airlines frequently offer less expensive, wholesale tickets that cannot be sold online. “Our travel representatives and vendors buy these confidential tickets in bulk, then sell them to our customers for less than online ticket prices.” If you’re determined to book your flight online, look for travel Web sites that offer flexible booking — many tickets cannot be refunded, even if you find a better deal. For example, CheapTrips not only lets its members cancel trips, but also offers a full money-back guarantee if the customer finds a lower price within 24 hours. The Web site also offers free trips every day, which are available on a first-come, firstserve basis. You should also make sure that you know what’s included in the ticket price. CheapTrips offers benefits like emergency funds or emergency tickets home, while others give you nothing more than a seat on a plane. To learn more, call 800-383-7708 or visit www.cheaptrip-

11 Ways to Save in 2011
(NewsUSA) f you occasionally struggle to balance your checkbook (or just want to be more frugal), a few simple changes can help you save. Coupon Mountain (www.couponmountain.com), the most trusted website for online coupons, discount codes and deals from major consumer brands, suggests the following tips:
I
1. Brew your own coffee. Home-brewed coffee costs about .12 cents a cup; buying your coffee will cost $1.50 to $3.50 a cup — you could end up saving between $500 and $1600 a year. 2. Drink filtered water. With filtered water, you will spend about 15 cents/gallon. Purchasing bottled water costs a lot more — about $10/gallon. 3. Use lower-wattage bulbs. Not only will less-powerful light
bulbs lower your energy bills, they may also last longer. CFL bulbs can also save money longterm. 4. Shop online. Shopping online allows you to easily compare prices, plus you can use coupon codes from CouponMountain.com to gain additional savings. 5. Cancel your gym membership. Do bodyweight exercises from home to build up strength, or locate a recreation facility or park that offers free exercise equipment. 6. Invest in a vacuum sealer. Purchase your meats and veggies in bulk. A vacuum sealer will keep your foods fresher, longer. 7. Buy generic, store brand or discount. Generic brands will often use the same ingredients or materials. Shop discount stores to find name-brand items for less.
8. Shop out of season. Stores put summer and winter items on clearance at the end of the season — this is a good time to snap things up for next year. 9. Check your monthly bills and usage. Cancel all unwatched movie channels — or use sites like Hulu vs. cable. Use free VoIP like Skype or Google Voice for long distance calls. 10. Don’t overpay for cell phones. You probably rarely use all of your monthly cell-phone minutes, so reduce your plan. Unlimited texting is a good bet, though, because it’s very expensive to go over. 11. Get social to save. Social networks like Facebook and Twitter abound with discounts. Check out Facebook.com/couponmountain for savings tips, exclusive giveaways and more.

Your New Year’s Resolution: Track Finances and Pay Off Debt
(NewsUSA) etter budgeting contributed to Americans paying off nearly $1 trillion in debt over the past two years, according to a recent report by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. “This is good news for the nation’s long-term economy as it shows that Americans are doing a better job at budgeting,” said Suzanne Poole, executive vice president, retail sales strategy and distribution, TD Bank. With the new year now upon us, this is the perfect time for Americans to commit to a New Year’s resolution to keep better track of their finances in 2011. If implemented with easy-to-use financial tools, consumers may actually stick to the resolution throughout the entire year, and it will undoubtedly help Americans continue — and maybe even increase — their rate of debt payments next year. Here are a few tips that consumers can put to use in order to keep better track of their finances in 2011: * Develop a realistic plan. Figure out what you want and what you need, and make sure you factor both into your budget. Also, don’t forget to be realistic and set aside funds for fun activities. * Set up a savings account. Consider opening a high-yield savings account that you will be able to rely on for future emergencies, so you don’t have unexpected spending items. * Easy-to-use programs always help. Today, consumers have access to a wide range of inexpensive programs and online services that can be used to develop budgets. From Quicken’s computer programs and online services, to pre-formulated spreadsheets on Microsoft’s Excel and Apple’s Numbers programs, there is a plethora of user-friendly options. * Pay in cash. People tend to spend less when they pay with cash. Swiping a plastic card has less of an emotional impact. There are times when it makes sense to use your debit card, such as to generate rewards or to avoid ATM fees. Make sure your bank offers debit card rewards and free ATM use. These options can save you money. * Take full advantage of mobile and online banking. Unlike four years ago, when a majority of Americans did not have access to their checking account at their fingertips, mobile banking apps for smartphones and hand-held computers allow consumers to keep track of their expenses and budgets on a daily basis. The same can be said for online banking. These options give you instant access to your money and better control over your finances. “To avoid all fees, consumers should use mobile banking apps and online banking to track their checking accounts on a daily basis,” said Poole. “They should also consider using automatic bill pay so they know their bills are paid on time every month and avoid late payment fees.” * Get a full return on your smartphone investment. Mobile banking apps aren’t the only tools consumers have to track their spending. A quick search of app stores for iPhone, Andriod and BlackBerry devices will generate “checkbook” apps that are easyto-use tools to keep detailed records of your daily expenses, bills and due dates, and bank accounts. The apps are password protected, and most don’t even require consumers to add sensitive information such as bank account numbers.

Habrá obstáculos, deslices, y recaídas. anuary 6th is Three Kings Day in Mexico, known as the “Dia de Los Reyes.” That date is Epiphany, which remembers the coming of the wise kings bringing gifts when visiting the Christ Child, who by so doing reveal Jesus to the world as Lord. The Catholic religion that dominates Mexico instills biblical stories, like this one about the three wise kings, in children. It is said the kings Melchoir, Gaspar, and Balthazar gave the Christ child gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. The three kings continue to do the same, as Santa Claus, to all the children around the world. In Mexico, children typically write letters to the three wise kings during the first five days of January. The letter is then placed in their shoe that is left near the nativity scene. In the letter, the child asks for a gift after explaining how they behaved during the previous year. With a day free of school, the children wake up as early as they can to unwrap the gifts the three wise kings have left behind. The rest of the day is spent with the family. On that same day, they will also share a sweet bread referred to as the “rosca de reyes,” with champurrado, their version of hot chocolate. But it doesn’t end there. In the rosca or king’s cake, there is a hidden baby Jesus. The person who gets a slice of bread with him in it gets to make the tamales for “Dia de la Candelaria,” or Candlemas Day on February 2. l número de muertes por violencia en el Condado de Santa Clara durante el año 2010 fue de 20 personas. Education
Opportunity for High School Students
Conquering culture shock while studying abroad
B
(ARA) s American students prepare to work in the global economy, many are leaving home to gain international experience and exposure. In fact, according to a study by the In-
A
stitute of International Education, the number of American students studying abroad has more than doubled over the past decade. “Attending classes abroad - whether for a summer term, a full semester or a year - has
valuable benefits that prepare students for careers in an increasingly global economy and can improve their marketability once in the job market,” says Aleksandra Hulisz, associate director of admissions for the American Inter-
Continental University (AIU) Study Abroad Program, which offers students the opportunity to study at AIU London or in Florence or Paris. “But students should also prepare themselves for potential feelings of homesickness and culture shock that may set in shortly after arrival.” When living in a new country, students need to adapt to the culture, customs and being away from loved ones. Many find it a stressful mix to balance, but Hulisz feels the benefits of studying abroad are worth it. To help cope with culture shock and homesickness Hulisz offers these tips: * Expect things to be different in a different country. When you feel stressed or uncomfortable about your new environment, try not to blow things out of proportion. Put things into perspective and try to understand why it is different. * Make friends through favorite activities. Get involved in school activities and join clubs of interest. For instance, the AIU cultural activities team plans day, evening and weekend excursions that are designed to complement the education taught in the classroom. * Know that everyone ex-
periences some culture shock. Talk with an instructor or adviser if you feel overwhelmed or alone. The truth of the matter is that many students feel this way when living in a foreign country - so don’t be afraid to share your feelings as you adapt to your new home. * Try not to label differences as good or bad. Instead, see them merely as “different.” Remember that immersing yourself in a different culture is a beneficial aspect of studying abroad and embrace the opportunity to experience a new country. * If class work is proving too difficult, seek help from a school administrator. The stress of adapting to a new culture in addition to taking classes can become overwhelming. Seek study abroad programs that offer special support to help students in their studies. For example, AIU offers tutoring, student services, advisers and a learning center. “Studying abroad is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that students should take advantage of,” says Hulisz. “It’s an enlightening experience that allows students to experience all the world has to offer.” Δ

Hospitals join the ‘going green’ movement meaningful change and cost savings. Studies show that a hospital with more than 300 beds can use between 21 and 22 pounds of textiles per patient day, which is why doing laundry accounts for most of a hospital’s energy and water use. Eliminating the need to do laundry isn’t feasible in a health care setting, so many hospitals are taking steps to lower the energy, water and chemicals needed to clean textiles and extend the usable life cycle of textile products. While changing the structure of the building can take years of remodeling, changing textiles and other materials within the hospital can immediately take
(ARA) ustainability and the greening of health care facilities have been hot-button topics for many years. For hospitals, “going green” can be a challenge for a variety of reasons, including building structure, internal functions and even patient needs. However, the health care industry has been tackling these issues and making important changes so that facilities become not only stewards of patients, but also stewards of the earth. “Because of their 24-hour nature and the need for infection control, hospitals have historically been one of the biggest generators of waste and consumers of water and electricity in a community,” says Llora Wonder, vice president of marketing for health care products maker Medline Industries, Inc. “But hospitals are becoming increasingly more sensitive to positively impacting their communities, as well as individual patients. Plus, they recognize the long-term cost-savings of green measures. Many hospitals have now launched initiatives to conserve resources, lower their consumption costs and reduce their
S
negative impact on the environment.” Facilities trying to go green are focusing on two main problem areas: reducing waste and curtailing water consumption. Wasteful ways Hospitals’ waste is not only seen in materials thrown out but also in money spent. Hospitals generate about 6.9 million tons of waste annually, according to calculations by Slate.com’s environmental blog, “The Green Lantern.” Also, a study written by Dr. Martin Markay, a gastrointestinal surgeon at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, stated the health industry is the second-largest contributor to landfills after the food industry. In terms of cost, although no recent tracker exists, it has been reported that hospitals spent about $44 to $68 per ton on solid waste disposal, according to a commonly cited study from 2000. The cost has spurred hospitals to introduce a number of waste reduction initiatives such as: * Replacing disposable cups, plates and tableware in cafeterias and food service with reusable items. * Using rechargeable batteries in equipment whenever
possible. * Reprocessing and remanufacturing certain low risk devices such as elastic bandages, pressure infuser bags, tourniquet cuffs and general-use surgical scissors. For the facility, the added cost-savings and increased efficiency improve its overall ability to serve the community. For the community, less waste, especially potentially hazardous materials, will wind up in the local landfills. Water damage The American Hospital Association (AHA) reports that there are nearly 11,000 registered and community hospitals in the United States. A study of Boston-area hospitals found they used 40 to 350 gallons per patient, per day, according to EnergyStar.gov. “With the water and sewer costs of these facilities averaging over 20 percent of total utility costs, the more efficient hospitals can deliver quality patient care at lower cost,” EnergyStar.gov points out. Hospitals use the most water in their laundry facilities. From bed linens to patient gowns, textiles are everywhere in a health care facility, making them a great way to create
place and effectively help hospitals become greener. Some of the changes hospitals are employing include: * Using surgical gowns, barrier sheets and other products made from reusable, durable energy-efficient textiles, such as Medline’s PerforMAX textile line. Made from next-generation polyester, the fabric is as comfortable as cotton but provides increased strength and durability, better moisture absorbency and wicking properties, is easier to clean, more stain resistant and dries faster. All these qualities mean a hospital will spend less energy and use fewer chemicals for cleaning and drying, and will need to replace items
less frequently. * Replacing old single-use underpads - used to protect hospital beds - with high-tech versions that require just one pad to do the job of three oldstyle ones. “It’s a big commitment for any hospital to join the green movement that has gained momentum in America,” Wonder says. “But ultimately, the chance to reduce costs, improve efficiency and become better stewards of not just patient health, but the planet’s health as well, make the efforts well worthwhile. In addition, just by changing the products used within the hospital, a big difference is made.”

AKLAND, CA,– January is typically a difficult month for the American Red Cross Northern California Blood Services Region to meet its commitment to local hospitals due to a lack of blood donors. This is often attributed to holiday fatigue, illness and bad weather. The Red Cross is trying to obtain potential donor attention through a variety of activities. Cities throughout the Bay Area will be honoring the Red Cross
with proclamations, recognizing the need for blood and encouraging residents to give blood. January is nationally recognized as National Blood Donor Month. In addition, the Red Cross will hold its 3rd annual Project: Plasma. Throughout January, all presenting blood donors can enter a drawing for a new 50” plasma 3-D HDTV.* The drawing will take place on Feb. 2, giving the winner time to set up that new TV before the Big Game on Feb. 6. Daphne’s Greek Café is helping the Red Cross by providing donors with $5 coupons* towards a meal at their local restaurants in Alameda, Santa Clara and
San Mateo counties. The Red Cross operates blood centers in Oakland, Pleasant Hill, Pleasanton, Newark and San Jose. It also holds mobile blood drives throughout the Bay Area. Call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-7332767) or visit redcrossblood.org to schedule an appointment. Individuals who are at least 17 years old (16 with parental permission), meet height and weight requirements (at least 110 pounds based on height) and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood.

Amo a Bolivia”.
