Durante estos tiempos estresantes, podemos descubrir maneras de ahorrar dinero mientras reducimos nuestro estrés y nos mantenemos conectados a nuestra familia. Un paseo a un parque local puede ser tan divertido como un costoso parque de diversiones. Los niños pequeños son buenos ejemplos, ya que disfrutan simplemente jugando y pueden usar su imaginación para inventar actividades y juegos entretenidos. No necesitan juguetes caros o equipo sofisticado, pero sí necesitan adultos con quienes jugar, en lugar de tener siempre la TV como pasatiempo. ASHINGTON, D.C. Este lunes participé de un programa radial en español de la costa Oeste que recibe llamadas de los radioescuchas. Uno de ellos sentenció seguro que “no habrá reforma migratoria”. Todos los políticos y los grupos de presión, afirmó, prometen cosas que no pueden cumplir y los inmigrantes “somos sus conejillos de Indias”. La frustración es entendible, sobre todo en su caso porque afirmó que se bene ficiaría de una reforma migratoria integral que hasta ahora ha sido elusiva. Pero tras largos meses de espera y promesas por cumplirse, ahora más que nunca hay que ejercer la mayor presión posible. El 20 de enero Barack Obama cumple su primer año como presidente. La promesa de promulgar una reforma migratoria amplia durante ese primer año obviamente no pudo cumplirse, pero la promesa de campaña no desaparece por ello. Muchos aguardan a ver qué dirá o qué no dirá Obama sobre el tema migratorio en su primer discurso sobre el Estado de la Unión que pronunciará ante una sesión conjunta del Congreso a fines de mes. El debate de la reforma de salud está en su recta final. Las versiones aprobadas por la Cámara Baja y el Senado serán unificadas y está tratando de evitarse el tradicional sistema de conciliación con miras a agilizar el proceso. De no haber mayores complicaciones, la intención es tratar de completar el proceso y la aprobación final de dicha reforma sanitaria en las próximas semanas. Aunque hay otros asuntos en la agenda legislativa, muchos abogan para que la reforma migratoria se discuta en el Senado en los próximos meses. Ahí, el senador demócrata de Nueva York, Charles Schumer, y el senador republicano de Carolina del Sur, Lindsey Graham, arman una medida cuyos lineamientos podrían presentarse próximamente. En la Cámara Baja, donde el congresista demócrata de Illinois, Luis Gutiérrez, anunció un proyecto de ley el pasado 15 de diciembre, (presentado por el congresista demócrata de Texas, Solomón Ortiz, como la medida H.R. 4321), los líderes demócratas aseguran que aguardarán a

que el Senado actúe antes de considerar un proyecto de reforma. También hoy hubo reportes de prensa de los esfuerzos por lograr una medida bipartidista de reforma migratoria. Tomando en cuenta que 2010 es año electoral, obviamente el tiempo apremia. Los diversos sectores de interés están ejerciendo presión conjunta e individual. Cuatro estudiantes que defienden la DREAM Act, medida que legalizaría a estudiantes indocumentados y que formaría parte de una reforma integral, partieron desde Miami en una caminata de 1,500 millas con miras a llegar hasta a la capital estadounidense. Esperan completar la caminata en cuatro meses y presionar de esa forma por la reforma migratoria. “Estoy cansado de volver a la escuela cada semestre y escuchar sobre otro amigo que fue detenido y deportado”, dijo Juan Rodríguez, uno de los estudiantes, según reportó el diario The New York Times. La Iglesia Católica, por su parte, espera concretar el envío de millones de tarjetas postales al Congreso instando por la reforma migratoria. La presión de los grupos ha sido constante por los pasados meses, pero digamos que ahora no es el momento de bajar la guardia. Dependiendo de lo que pase -o no pase- en el frente migratorio, quienes gozan del privilegio de votar tendrán la oportunidad este año de acudir a las urnas en las elecciones de medio tiempo en noviembre y pasarle factura a quienes obs truyan la reforma o no cumplan con sus promesas. Muchos de esos votantes son inmigrantes que en los comicios del 2008 votaron por primera vez. Otros son votantes que pueden ser la voz de indocumentados que son sus familiares o sus amigos. Demostrar el poder político en las urnas es finalmente la mejor arma de persuasión y la que mejor entienden los políticos que están eternamente en campaña aunque muchas veces olviden que su supervivencia está en mano de los electores. n making your 2010 New Year’s resolutions you have asked for certain issues to happen or improve. What does the publisher of El Observador want to happen or improve? One action that our community of readers already know is that when they want to read EO, they can read our information in its entirety on our website: www.el-observador.com. Another is that our readers begin to provide the editor and publisher with feedback communications that help us guide our efforts to do the research that enables us to inform you about matters that you care about. We all need good, factual, and truthful information as a base for our personal decision making process. As a community we need more leaders who have the wisdom to communicate, collaborate and truly be committed to service the people. Too many of our current leaders, especially elected officials, do not focus on doing what is best for the people, but rather focus on doing what is best for their reelection. An outcome is the partisan politics, which has prevented them from attending to “the business of the people.” May our current leaders have the wisdom to govern all of us? One thing we might all ask for as a 2010 New Year’s resolution is to have the wisdom to know what is right from what is wrong in our lives and to have the courage to act on it. Many in our community are stoic. They silently endure what is happening in their community and its economy. May these folks begin to speak out about their concerns? And these folks need to be responsible for providing some support to those who try to speak up on their behalf. Learn to express your thoughts using a ‘gentle tongue’. We must all have the faith that good things will prevail over bad things. When the news is very bad, we must have the faith that some good will come in the end. We must understand that we are all interconnected by our relationships in this community. We all need jobs that contribute to the well being of others and ourselves. Individuals feel good when they are employed without exploitation. We must all try to perform the work we have very well because its products or services affect others. We all need the ability to remember what is le-

gitimately needed. We all must begin to practice forgetting those things that are best forgotten. The community must be able to trust groups, such as the local sheriffs and police, whose duty and purpose is to maintain ‘law and order’ in the community. The mis-use of force and the abusive events we hear about involve only a few individuals out of the 1300 police officers in the San Jose Police Department. The violence that goes on in this community cannot be dealt with effectively without the involvement of those who truthfully relate what was witnessed. The fear of being a witness seems to hinder the ability to resolve many violent events, murders, and vandalism. A major concern deals with this community’s ability to remain sensitive to what is going on in this community. It may be possible that too many of us have become insensitive as a result of tuning out all those reports on war, violence, terrorism, local murders and destruction that we witness daily. An example is that just south of the MexicanU.S.A. border, during the past three years more than 15,000 individuals have been killed (or disappeared). Why does the American mainstream media not provide the appropriate level of news coverage? This ‘drug war’ may be as expensive as the wars in the Middle East. What has been going on is not good for both Mexico and the United States. Could it be that it is time to legalize the current drug traffic so as to be able to know who is involved, who profits, and most importantly, have the ability to tax its cash flow? What 2010 New Year’s resolutions have you made? One important action that this community needs is to resolve to fully participate in the Census 2010 effort because that impacts the representation in Congress, the allocation of tax revenues, and much more. Everybody who is a resident must participate in the 2010 Census. An important resolution is to continue increased support of EL OBSERVADOR with your business advertisements, your interest and involvement because we are your community’s source of useful information. Ten-Cent Per Drink Fee To Mitigate Billions In Alcohol-Related Harm Dies In Assembly Committee

"At a time when Californians are seeing drastic cuts to their schools and essential services, the alcohol industry continues to escape paying a single penny more to offset the billions in harm their products generate in medical, court, police, and prison costs,'' Beall said. "We cannot afford to subsidize the alcohol industry's free ride. It's time for Big Alcohol to sober up and help pay the tab. Drinking is a matter of personal responsibility. But I also believe the alcohol industry has a responsibility to pay its fair share for the damage their products create." The alcohol industry is entering its 20th year without any state fee or tax increase despite inflation. But polls by the Public Policy Institute of California and the Field Poll show three-quarters of Californians support increasing levies on alcohol. Researchers also say increasing fees on alcohol will also curb under-age drinking which comprises an estimated 12 to 20 percent of the market. After completing the course, students can utilize their new skill set by applying for tax preparer positions. Liberty Tax will donate all collected phones to Cell Phones for Soldiers. This organization is dedicated to enabling soldiers stationed in Iraq and overseas to afford to call loved ones. They recycle used cell phones to provide calling cards for soldiers. ince August 2009, 9,000 hotel workers have been working without a new contract. They have tried negotiating with hospitality corporations that continue to remain profitable, even in a recession year. Boycotts have been called at four San Francisco hotels: the Grand Hyatt, the Palace, the Westin St. Francis, and the W Hotels. Over 1,000 hotel workers have participated in strikes at three of these hotels, and future work stoppages remain a possibility. Even after all of this, hotel corporations refuse to settle a contract that would have cost them only 1.5% increase in total labor costs during the one-year term. Thus, hotel workers continue to fight - with renewed vigor and spirit. January 5, 2010 marked the launch of the largest boy-

cott target yet, the Hilton Hotel Union Square. Led by Unite Here’s International President, John Wilhelm and AFL-CIO President, Richard Trumka, over 1,400 hotel workers marched through downtown San Francisco. “We’ve proposed the cheapest contract in the union’s history while the corporations continue to make millions,” said John Elrod, a bartender at the W Hotel. “I think the hotel workers have sacrificed enough. It’s time the hotel corporations realize that we’re not going to give up.” Nearly 100 hotel workers and community members were arrested in September 2009 for engaging in nonviolent civil disobedience. On Tuesday, the SFPD arrest over 140 hotel workers and their supporters during the rally.

We have the ability to quickly implement additional screening measures including explosive detection canine teams, law enforcement officers, gate screening, behavior detection and other measures both seen and unseen. Coalition Calls Governator the Worst By Osvaldo Castillo El Observador

everal community organizations gathered across the State to present Governor Schwarzenegger with the“World’s Worst Governor” Award on Thursday, January 7, for the actions he has taken during his administration. “We are very disappointed with the governor because he has put California in a very bad situation,” said Astrid Campos, Community Organizer for the California Partnership organization. “The governor has not been putting California families at the top of his priorities. Our coalition will fight to protect working families.” Kim Kruckel, State Budget Campaign Coordinator for the California Partnership organization added, “He has insinuated that many people are committing fraud to access services, while ignoring (until now) the tax breaks and expenditures given to corporations.” The community coalitions gathered at several cities across California such as San Francisco, Los Angeles and Modesto to express their frustrations with the governor. Most of the protests were held in front of the governor’s office in each city. “This event took less than two weeks to plan, because thousands of people across the Bay Area are still outraged over last year’s budget fiasco,” Kruckel said. The coalitions have asked for the creation of a recovery plan that helps

people bounce back by creating a safety net, the creation of jobs and in vestment in workers, close tax loopholes and acquiring federal dollars. “Cuts to various programs are going to happen, but we need more than just cuts, we need solutions,” Campos said. “Solution that will help all of our c ommunities.” California Partnership is a sta tewide coalition of community-based groups, organizing and advocating for the programs and policies that reduce and end poverty. They are spearheading campaigns to develop electoral power in low-income communities, give a voice to local communities in creating a more just state budget and building a movement for healthcare for everyone. CAP member organizations fight for a fair budget be cause the low-income communities they serve are directly affected by the state budget, from limits in financial aid for college students to the elimination of dental treatment for seniors on Medi-cal, from pay cuts for service workers assisting the disabled to threats to funding for child care and food assistance. In some areas where CAP members are organizing, up to 17% of the population is unemployed. Thirty percent of the population does not have health insurance. Humilde jardinero apoya a la educación Por Rosario Vital - El Observador

on Catalino Tapia (64) no tenía idea que su gran sueño se convertiría en la esperanza de muchos jóvenes estudiantes. La historia de Don Catalino es increíble y lo más increíble aún no son los miles de dólares que en tiempos de crisis ha reunido para entregarlos como becas a estudiantes, sino el corazón tan grande que tiene para ayudar a jóvenes de bajos recursos a través de la organización sin fines de lucro que él fundó en el 2002 denominada Bay Area Garderners Foundation (BAGF). Criado en Arteaga, Michoacán ,Tapia conoció la escuela hasta el 6to grado y con muy poca educación vino a los Estados Unidos para hacer de todo. Lavó platos, horneó panes, hizo trabajos de construcción, trabajó como tintorero y también en la jardinería. De este último empleo logró establecer su pequeño negocio y de allí se inspiró para hacer cosas grandes. Con poca educación pudo mantener a su familia y este le costó largas horas de trabajos forzados. "Trabajaba 14 a 15 horas por día y me pagaban $ 0.45 centavos la hora. Estaba obligado a tener dos o tres trabajos. No hablaba ingles soy de la "universidad" de la vida", sonrie Catalino. Catalino a lado de su esposa Margarita hicieron ese gran esfuerzo para salir adelante y hacer que sus hijos continúen una carrera profesional.

En 1,999 Catalino tuvo el momento más grande de su vida. Él a lado de su familia asistió a la ceremonia de graduación de su hijo Noel, quien terminó la carrera de Leyes en la Universidad de Berkeley. Aquella noche fue clave y Catalino notó que pocos latinos se graduaron y que había que hacer mucho para que los jóvenes continúen sus estudios. "Ningún joven con deseos de triunfar debe quedarse sin educación", afirma Catalino. Tapia reunió a sus amigos los jardineros para que se unan en la creación de una fundación que ayude a recaudar dinero para ayudar a estudiantes. Tapia y compañeros se encargaron de pedir a través de cartas a sus patrones algún donativo y las respuestas no se hicieron esperar. Por otro lado su hijo y un equipo de abogados se encargaron de los pasos legales para crear una fundación. Bay Area Gardeners Foundation quedó constituida en el 2002. En el 2006 en una sencilla ceremonia la fundación entregó las primeras cinco becas de $1,500 dólares cada uno. En el 2007 BAGF entregó a 9 estudiantes la misma cantidad de dinero a cada uno. En el 2008 la lista se incrementó a 16 y el año pasado 21 estudiantes recibieron becas para su colegio siempre con el mismo monto de $1,500 dólares. Don Catalino ha aparecido en portadas de importantes medios de comunicación. El junio del

año pasado recibió el prestigioso premio por su servicio a la comunidad, llamado Jefferson Award. Pese a estos grandes logros la humildad que lo caracteriza y la bondad que tiene en su ser no se ha visto afectada. "Quise ser torero o boxeador pero soy jardinero y disfruto mi trabajo y todo lo que hago con mucho amor. Aprecio los centavos de dólar que llegan a esta fundación, asi como a los grandes cheques de miles de dólares", comenta Tapia. Hasta el momento el humilde jardinero sigue podando las plantas, se levanta todas las mañanas para embellecer los jardines y llenarlos de color no solo a la naturaleza sino al futuro educativo de muchos jóvenes de bajos recursos y con muchos deseos de estudiar. Catalino no llegó a ser torero ni tampoco boxeador pero si un gran jardinero que cambió al mundo con amor. Tapia está escribiendo un libro y tiene mucho que contar. La fundación nació con amor y compasión por quienes menos tienen. Don Catalino no es el tradicional hombre de negocios, sino el humilde hombre que desea ver una sonrisa y un futuro diferente para la juventud de hoy. En su vivienda de Redwood City comparte su vida con su esposa Margarita y como cualquier persona común y corriente toma su "troca" para ir a trabajar. NUMMI Workers Take Their Fight To Save California Jobs To San Jose Auto Show

orkers from the New United Motors Manufacturing Inc. (NUMMI) plant held an informational picket outside the San Jose Auto Show as part of their ongoing effort to keep Toyota from closing down the auto plant in April of this year. At the auto show, NUMMI workers and supporters urged attendees to sign the petition and pledge not to purchase Toyota products unless Toyota rescinds its decision to close the NUMMI plant. If the plant closes, it would leave nearly 5,000 auto workers unemployed, and could result in as many as 50,000 jobs lost at other Bay Area employers that depend on the NUMMI plant to stay in business. an Jose, California -The Santa Clara County Public Health Department has advised the local medical community that they can vaccinate the general public. Previously the vaccine had been directed only for those at high risk of illness or serious complications from the H1N1 flu

virus. An estimated 800,000 Santa Clara County residents are in the high-risk category and about three-quarters of them have been vaccinated so far. Public and private healthcare providers have received about 600,000 doses from late October to December 31, 2009. Another 250,000 doses are expected to be shipped to local medical providers in January and early February. The H1N1 vaccine offers the best protection against the H1N1 flu virus. While hospitalizations due to the H1N1 flu virus have been declining in Santa Clara County, the virus is still causing serious illness. Flu pandemics are unpredictable and there could be another resurgence of the disease over the next few months. It’s important to get vaccinated to protect yourself against the virus and to help prevent another outbreak of the disease. If you have not received your vaccination yet, you should get it as soon as possible. Contact your healthcare provider to see if they have received the H1N1 vaccine. Anuncian nominados a mejor película para los premios PGA

os Angeles, (Notimex).- Las películas “Avatar”, “An education”, “District 9”, “The hurt locker”, “Inglorious basterds”, “Invictus”, “Precious”, “Star trek”, “Up” y “Up in the air” contenderán por el galardón a Mejor Película de 2009 en los premios PGA. Los nominados a esta categoría fueron dados a conocer por el Sindicato de Productores de América (PGA, por sus siglas en inglés). Los ganadores serán revelados en una ceremonia de gala prevista para el próximo 24 de enero en el Hollywood Palladium, después de que los triunfadores sean seleccionados mediante el voto de los cuatro mil 200 miembros que conforman la agrupación. Para esta edición, la PGA decidió ampliar a 10 sus

favoritos a Mejor Película, tal como lo hizo la Academia de las Artes y las Ciencias Cinematográficas, que otorga el Oscar, y extender el número de postulaciones. El ganador del premio Darry F. Además, los bebés menores de seis meses todavía no pueden ser vacunados.
