Marisol Muñoz-Kiehne, Ph.D. egún los hallazgos de estudios recientes, los niños Latinos en los EEUU demuestran tasas elevadas de sobrepeso, obesidad, diabetes infantil y otras dolencias debido en parte al estilo de vida sedentario que adoptan al vivir en este país, pues pasan gran parte de su tiempo libre sentados frente a la televisión y la computadora. Una de las mejores maneras de evitar estas condiciones y de fomentar el crecimiento y aprendizaje de nuestros niños y jóvenes es mediante el atletismo. Las investigaciones señalan que los deportes aportan al desarrollo físico, mental, y social infantil y juvenil, a la vez que nos proveen oportunidades para compartir como familia. Además, ¡son pasatiempos sanos y divertidos! Al practicar deportes los niños se ejercitan, se reduce su estrés mientras se aumenta su autoestima, y aprenden a trabajar en equipo. Aún si no llegan a ser deportistas diestros, el practicar compañerismo atlético y el esforzase honestamente les servirá en otras esferas de su vida. Las costumbres sanas comienzan a formarse a temprana edad. Nunca es muy temprano ni muy tarde para aprovechar los beneficios de los deportes. Claro, "mientras antes, mejor"; mas "nunca es tarde si la dicha es buena." Así que, comenzando hoy, fomentemos la participación atlética de nuestros niños e incluyamos al deporte en la rutina recreativa de nuestras familias. MLB Players Speak Out Against Arizona Immigration Law

ashington, DC – As Major League Baseball celebrates its All-Star game tonight in Anaheim, CA, a number of players are speaking out in opposition to Arizona’s anti-Latino SB1070 law. Some are even promising to boycott next year’s All-Star Game, scheduled to be held in Phoenix, AZ, if it is not moved to another state. According to Frank Sharry, Executive Director of America’s Voice, “In contrast to the Arizona law, which pits neighbor against neighbor and makes everyone who looks or sounds “foreign” into a suspect, our nation’s pastime brings together people from all walks of life and nationalities. As a country, we are better and wiser than what the Arizona law represents and we should commend these players for standing up for American values.” Among the players speaking out against the Arizona law include the following: * St. Louis Cardinals first baseman and three time Most Valuable Player Albert Pujols highlighted his opposition to the Arizona law, saying, " How are you going to tell me that, me being Hispanic, if you stop me and I don't have my ID, you're going to arrest me? That can't be.'' * Milwaukee Brewers All-Star pitcher
Yovani Gallardo stated that “If the game is in Arizona, I will totally boycott." * Jerry Hairston Jr. of the San Diego Padres said, "It reminds me of seeing the old movies with the Nazis when they ask you to show your papers. It's not right. I can't imagine my mom -- who's been a U.S. citizen longer than I've been alive, who was born and raised in Mexico -- being asked to show her papers. I can't imagine that happening. So it kind of hits home for me." * All-Star pitcher Heath Bell, also of the Padres, called for Bud Selig to move next year’s All-Star Game and noted that he may not attend next year’s game if he is once again selected, in a show of support for his Latino teammates. Said Bell, "If I'm voted I'm going to have to really think about it, because I have a lot of friends that are not white. Sometimes you need to stick up for your friends and family." Añade la carne; cocínala hasta que esté dorada por todos lados. Añade la cebolla, el ajo, los tomates, los chiles, los hongos, la sal y la pimienta. Cocina a fuego medio alto durante 3 minutos, revolviendo ocasionalmente. 2 Coloca los ingredientes en un platón de vidrio para hornear sin engrasar de 13 x 9 pulgadas. En un tazón, incorpora todos los ingredientes de la cubierta. besity is a disease that is affecting the lives of many Americans. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, one third of American adults are obese. Dr. Dan Delgado, director of the Pediatric Healthy Lifestyle Center, believes that obesity can be prevented at an early age if children learn to enjoy fresh fruit and vegetables. On Saturday, July 10, Delgado, along with some volunteers from The Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties brought their “Produce Mobile” to Valley Health Center East Valley in San Jose. with free, fresh produce that were distributed for free to low-income families. “This project that we have with the hospital is very important because many people today are not getting the proper amounts of nutritious food that they need to live a healthy lifestyle,” Delgado said. “The only requirement is that the families are low-income. We were specifically trying to find pregnant women.” On July 10, the refrigerated truck contained 10,700 pounds of produce, but it can fit up to 20,000 pounds. “Each family gets two bags of produce and we hope more and more people learn about this project so that we can fill our truck every time we come to the hospital,” Delgado said.
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, overweight and obesity are both labels for ranges of weight that are greater than what is generally considered healthy for a given height. The terms also identify ranges of weight that have been shown to increase the likelihood of certain diseases and other health problems. For adults, overweight and obesity ranges are determined by using weight and height to calculate a number called the "body mass index" (BMI). BMI is used because, for most people, it correlates with their amount of body fat. For children and teens, BMI ranges above a normal weight have different labels (overweight and obese). Additionally, BMI ranges for children and teens are defined so that they take into account normal differences in body fat between boys and girls and differences in body fat at various ages. “American’s really need to start to learn to eat healthy food because people who are obese have a higher risk of getting diabetes,” Delgado said. To save money and energy costs, San Jose's Green Vision proposes converting all of the City's 62,000 streetlights to zero-emission lights by 2022. The City has been testing "smart" and energy-efficient LED streetlights that can be dimmed in the late evening hours when traffic is minimal to help achieve that goal. Switching to white LED lights and dimming them during outside of peak hours may improve the quality of light on our streets, protect the night sky, reduce energy use and help the city cut its $4 million annual streetlight energy bill by more than half. Data collected at a streetlight demonstration in early March 2010 indicated that residents prefer
"full spectrum" (white) lights over the City's current streetlights and can see as far, if not further, under the white lights, even when the lights are dimmed by half. hefollowing nuggets of information were provided by Palo Alto Council of PTAs Parent Education, April 2009 in partnership with Challenge Success. I first became
aware of this information when it was presented at the forum, January 17,2010 at All Saints Episcopal Church, Palo Alto by parishioners Sigrid Pinsky and Marion Manely, who are both involved mothers and stakeholder parents. Sleep: Did you know that teenagers need 9.25 hours of sleep each night? Eighty percent of teenagers do not get the recommended amount of sleep. At least 28% fall asleep in school and 22% fall asleep doing homework. A majority of adolescents are averaging 7 hours of sleep per night, and one-quarter are getting 6 hours of sleep or less according to P. Wolfe, a sleep research scientist. Pre-schoolers need 11 to 14 hours of sleep per night. Children, ages 5 to 12 years old need 10 to 11 hours of sleep. Research established that 54% of first to fifth graders sleep just 9 to 10 hours per night and 17% sleep less than 9 hours per night. Adults need 8 hours of sleep each night (healthy range is 7 to 9 hours according to the National Sleep Foundation. What Is The Impact Of Not Having Enough Sleep? By every measure, human functioning declines impacting memory, attention, mood
and/or cognitive performance (Dr. Mark Rosenkind, Palo Alto High School, PSTA, 2008). Dr. Madeline Levine, (Palo Alto PTA Council Presentation, 2008) stated, “If you do only one thing, make sure your children and teenagers are getting enough sleep.” SCHOOL: In a national survey, students were asked to use two words to describe how they felt in school. The word most often used by students was “bored” followed by “tired.” (L. Lyons, Most Teens Associate School with Boredom, Fatigue, Gallup Poll, 2004). Studies have established that the time kids spend doing homework has increased 51% since 1961 (2004 national survey of more than 2,900 children by Institute for Social Research, University of Michigan). Moderate to high levels of stress are experienced by 9 to 13 year old children as reported by 70% of Bay Area parents. What causes the stress? Parents surveyed said schoolwork and homework. (Lucile Packard Foundation for Children’s Health, 2005) KidsData,org. New Poll Highlights Parents’ Views on Physical, Emotional health of Children). Nine to 13 year olds surveyed said they were more
stressed by academics than any other stressor---even bullying or family problems. (KidsHealth KidsPoll (2005) How Kids Handle Stress. National Association of Health Education Centers). Research shows almost no correlation between homework and achievement for elementary school students. (Cooper, H., Robinson, J.C., Patall, E.A. (2006) Does Homework Improve Academic Achievement? A Synthesis of Research 1987-2003, Review of Education Research, 761, 1-62). It is time that these studies and their results be known to all parents who have the responsibility to nurture the development of their children. It is time for local input by parents in the guidance and direction of the curriculum which is used to train the children. It is time that the professional educator’s unions and governmental agencies understand the responsibility for education begins with the parents, especially the mother who teaches a child its initial language and relationship skills. Invariably, successful school districts are those that include the parents as valued stakeholders which indeed they are.Δ

ith oil uncontrollably spilling into the Gulf of Mexico, the patience towards corporate tax breaks has begun to disappear. In San Jose, several groups and organizations gathered in front of an Arco gas station in on Tuesday, July 13, to express their anger towards corporations and the government that is giving them tax breaks. Arco was selected because Arco is own by BP Global. "The governor is proposing to cut several programs like Medi-Cal, and yet he is proposing to give tax breaks to big corporations," said Sandy Perry of CHAM Ministry in San Jose. "This is unfair and the corporations should be held accountable for being greedy." California is the fourth largest oil producing state in the US, but it is also the only state in the country that does not charge oil companies a fee for extracting oil. In 2009, California oil fields produced 630,000 barrels of oil a day. By introducing an oil severance fee, California would benefit from an estimated $1.5 billion in additional revenues annually - offsetting the need for disastrous cuts to health and human services and preserving private and public sector jobs. "We feel that the corporations should pay their share of the taxes because that would help keep service and programs from being cut," said Richard Hobbs, Associate Director for the
Services, Immigrants Rights and Education Network (SIREN). "These are the programs that greatly help immigrants and low-income families." According to SIREN, The governor is proposing to ration care for Medi-Cal patients by limiting doctor and clinic visits to 10 a year and six prescription visits a month, limiting access to medical supplies and equipment needed by people with disabilities such as wheelchairs and breathing machines, and eliminating coverage of Adult Day Health Care. Conditions that can require more than 10 doctor visits per year and six prescriptions per month include cancer, diabetes, high-blood pressure, heart disease, arthritis, multiple sclerosis and asthma. Schwarzenegger has also proposed cuts to In Home Support Services and food assistance programs for seniors and people with diabetes. Lynn Huidekoper of the Single Payer Healthcare Coalition was at the protest because she feels that the oil spill cause by BP Global is a perfect example of how corporate greed has ruined the lives of many people. She also feels that some of those that support corporations like BP Global should give some of their income to charities that would keep these programs and services from being in cut. "An example of one of these people is Meg Witman," Huidekoper said. "She is worth millions and millions of dollars and she could give some of it to help those who are struggling because of corporate greed." For more information visit www.siren-bayarea.org.

hen Rose Herrera, Councilmember for District 8, was a youth, she would spend many of her summer days swimming at various swimming pools in East San Jose. But when she heard that the only swimming pool that would be available this summer to East San Jose residents would be the pool located at The Mayfair Community Center, she made it her mission to have more than one swimming pool available for her constituents. “Summer is a time when people, especially children, can escape the heat and enjoy a day at the pool,” Herrera said. “That is why I found it unacceptable to have only one swimming pool in East San Jose open.” Herrera teamed up with West Coast Aquatics and their efforts resulted in the opening of a recreational swimming pool in Silver Creek High School. “This is a perfect example of what can be accomplished when a community and a non profit work together,” Herrera said. “We made it our mission
to make sure the swimming pool at Silver Creek High School would be open this summer.” About West Coast Aquatics: West Coast Aquatics is a non-profit organization that has been in the community for over 25 years providing people of all ages the benefit of developing healthy attitudes, bodies and minds.
