n July 15, a San Jose coalition a ssembled at Sacr ed Heart Community Service Center. They provided their stories relating to Operation Community S hield a nd t he c onse-

quences for the local police department when sustaining this program. San J ose P olice C hief Moore h as i ncorporated t wo Immigration Customs and Enforcement (ICE) agents into the city’s police department as part of the Depar tment of Homeland Security P rogram called Operation Community Shield. â€œAt this time there is much fear in the community in knowing that w e hav e two agents working with the police department,â€? said Maria Fernandez, community or ganizer, Sacr ed Heart Community Service Center. “ This is of gr eat concern and is why we are united.â€? The c ommunity s ent a clear message that they don ’t want the agents in San Jose. The reality is that a lot of people in the immigr ant community reasonably don’t trust the police department. Some have witnessed crimes or have been victims, y et they r efuse, because of lack of trust, to hav e the police involved. Many anxiously believe Operation Community Shield will only make matters worse. “As you all know it is v ery easy to do and we all survive in this community by stereotyping. We don’t know who these ICE agents are, we don’t know

if they’re male or female. We don’t kno w anything about them and right no w they ar e these faceless feder al Homeland Security agents who ar e bringing anxiety, concern and fear in the community , said Judge LaDoris Cordell (Ret.), Independent Police Auditor, City of San Jose. This appr ehensive community is willing to work with the police depar tment. They want to be able to depend on the police and build a trusting relationship. They also want to meet the agents and r equest that it be done within 30 days. “I am str ongly in suppor t of going this next step of having these ICE agents meet face to face with community leaders in the immigrant community, said Judge Cordell. The coalition believes that thousands of families ar e being separated by police encounters. They fear the number will increase with the additio n of these ICE agents. They would like to meet them to better understand their role. They also want to kno w how a person can report misconduct. “We will be aware. We will not let them do whatever they want and we’ll be watching this program, said Fernandez.

a Santa Clara County Tradition By Dave Cortese President of the Board of Supervisor of SCC

L

ast w eek I shar ed with y ou some ideas for fun family activities as well as places to look for additional activities, such as your local library or community center. I would also like to invite y ou to another great FREE family event this summer, the Santa Clara County Youth Fair. It runs from August 4-7, from 10AM to 8PM each day, at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds, 344 Tully Road, San Jose. Parking is FREE on Thursday and Friday and it’s only $5 per car on Saturday and Sunday. This year’s theme is Get R eady to Saddle Up! I have many great memories of the fair – the smell of funnel cakes and r oasted corn, the rush of the carnival rides, the agricultural exhibits, and the sights and sounds of the livestock ar enas. And of course a fun day spent with my family. This year’s fair will have all of those classic fair activities and much more. It has been transformed into a modern fair with something for everyone. There will be many hands on activities including the “World of Music” exhibition. A “World of Music” is an inter active ‘hands-on’ museum of music, housing over 300 different ethnically diverse and/or historical instruments from six continents. By exploring the instruments in this exhibit, you will get a glimpse into other cultures and history in an educational yet fun environment. In addition to the museum portion of the exhibit, A World of Music features ongoing interactive rhythm workshops wher eby students of all ages can gather to learn simple patterns under the guidance of a musician or

teacher. There will also be daily drum circles where even people without music experience can explore the world of percussion and drum rhythms. For a l ighthearted an d en tertaining glimpse at Wild West, come watch the Fables of the West perform daily at the fair. “The little cowboys on the little horses” combine improv comedy, western flair, and wacky antics to show how the West was fun! The fair will also be hostin g a talent and performing arts competition. Sure to be a hit, this competition will include y outh performing a variety of acts fr om ballet and hip hop dances to br oadway and country singing. These performances will be held throughout the day on Saturday and Sunday. You can’t forget the amusement rides. The fair will be bringing in ev en more rides this year for hours of entertainment. Grab a rucksack to ride do wn the slide or climb on the Ferris Wheel for a bird’s eye view of the fairgrounds. Last but not least, visit the air conditioned Expo Hall to view the liv estock sho w. This show provides an opportunity for kids to see all sorts of livestock from chickens to sheep to cows. These animals were raised by youth participating in the 4-H pr ogram. If you see them grooming the animals, feel free to ask them what it is like to raise farm animals and how much work is involved. I’m sure it will be an experience never to be forgotten. To see complete details on the fair, visit www.thefair.org. You can also contact me with any questions or comments at 408299-5030 or dave.cortese@bos.sccgov.org. Δ

Tech Job Growth Poses Both Opportunities and Challenges for the Valley

“To make the most of these oppor tunities, job seekers must adapt to changes in what employers want by demonstrating increased flexibility and the ability to work as part of a team to remain relevant in the futur e workplace,” said Stephen Levy, director of the Palo Alto-based Center f or C ontinuing S tudy o f t he Ca lifornia Economy (CCSCE) and an author of the study. “And the Valley faces enormous challenges to provide great schools, world-class infrastructure and a high quality of life so that talented entrepreneurs, workers and their families will want to live and work in Silicon Valley,” he said. Based on 250 employer surveys and more than 50 executive interviews, this research study provides a roadmap for Silicon Valley’s efforts to address workfor ce changes and competitiv e challenges. The study – Silicon Valley in Transition: Economic and Workforce Implications in the Age of iPads, Android Apps and the Social Web – proposes a number of r ecommendations for better preparing and connecting job seekers with available employment opportunities and for Silicon Valley to maintain its dominance as the world’s preeminent innovation factory. To compete for future tech jobs, job seekers will need to: • Demonstrate entrepreneurial skills, flexibility, adaptability and a passion for life-long learning in addition to relevant technical skills. • Shift their resume and job search strategies to focus on their experiences helping pr evious employers solve problems and innovate.

The study contains “Tech Resume 2.0,” with resume advice from 27 tech recruiters and hiring decision makers. Executives locate in SiliconValley to be near the world’s largest pool of high tech talent, to be near their key customers, to enjoy a high quality of life and to hav e access to capital and gr eat universities. Today’s fiscal struggles ar e threatening many of the Valley’s advantages – advantages that are critical to r emaining competitive in an area with high labor and housing costs. Going forward, leaders must find ways to implement an active investment agenda – in the Valley’s workforce, infrastructure and communities. “Current success is no guarantee of future success in our increasingly competitive world,” said Kris Stadelman, Executive Director of NOVA, one of the Silicon Valley workforce board study sponsors. “W orkforce boar ds, our education partners and Valley companies know we have to work hard to adapt to the changes and challenges identified in the study.” The study recommends workforce boards must remain aligned with ever shifting local employer skill demands in or der provide job seekers with r elevant advice on job sear ch and resume strategies. Boards can a lso es tablish portfolio learning labs to give laid-off job seekers opportunities to demonstrate their grasp of new technologies and their passion for learning and innovation. The sponsoring workforce boards provide job training and career development assistance for job seekers, as well as connecting job seekers and local employers. Participating boards include NOVA, based in Sunnyvale, work2future in San Jose and San Mateo County and Santa Cruz County. Green LMI of Massachusetts, BW R esearch of Carlsbad, CA and CCSCE led a national research team that co nducted the eight-month study.

(ARA) ens, pencils, erasers, paper - these are the school supplies students need year after year and are on almost every parent’s back-to-school shopping list. Ho wever, that doesn’t mean they’re the only supplies students need to survive the school year with ease. Instead o f w aiting u ntil y our s tudent r ealizes what he’s missing once it’s too late, shop now for these easily overlooked back-to-school essentials. “Most students hav e that ‘ oh no’ moment once they’re under a deadline and r ealize they don’t have the right materials to com plete it or when they’re already stuck in a difficult situation,” says Rebecca Smith of Master Lock. “Using past experience to think ahead and shop early will help students - and parents - avoid those dreaded moments and navigate the school year a bit easier.”

P

1. Pencil sharpener. You’ve got the pencils,

but sharpening them can be a real hassle as not all classrooms have a functioning built-in sharpener. To help students av oid trips to and fr om their desk during impor tant tests, pur chase a small pencil sharpener with a built-in shaving collection system that can be stor ed in a backpack pocket.

2. Portable stapler. Students are often in

8

need of a quick staple, y et a stapler is no where to be found. A small, por table stapler can be a major timesaver for students who are frequently required to turn in multiple-page assignments.

3. Umbrella. Whether walking to class on

a college campus or home fr om middle school, umbrellas are an easily overlooked school essential that pay dividends in student comfort. A collapsible m odel t hat f its i n y our s tudent’s backpack or book bag will be easiest to carry whenever the weather looks questionable.

4. Correction fluid or tape. For last-minute,

on-the-go fixes to important school assignments, a bottle of white corr ection tape or a corr ection pen is a must when r e-printing or re-doing isn’t an option.

5. USB flash drive. Since so many school projects are now completed on computers, a USB drive makes it easy to save files and work on them anywhere. Whether your student is working on a paper at home, or on a group presentation at a friend’s house, files will be easily accessible.

6. Stain remover pen. From lunch spills, to

grass stains to stray pen marks, students appreciate being able to touch up messy spots that wind up on their clothing throughout the day. Where water doesn’t always work, portable stain remover pens work w ell on har d-to-remove spots.

7. Security products. School supplies be-

come useless if they’re stolen from your student. To help avoid theft, invest in at least four types of security products: a padlock for students’school or gym lockers such as Master Lock’s Speed Dial combination lock, a backpack lock to deter pickpockets, a portable mini-safe that can help keep valuables safe in a dorm room or in transit and a lock to attach to your laptop or desktop computer.

8.Three-hole punch. From organizing class

notes and handouts in a three-ring binder for easy r eview, t o b inding pr esentations b efore turning them in, students find endless uses for a three-hole punch after investing in one.

9. Mints o r br ush s trips. S ince m any

schools do not allo w gum in classr ooms, mints or brush strips are great options for students to carry with them for use after a potent lunch.

10. Water bottle. If your school allows it,

help y our st udent s tay h ydrated b y providing them with a portable water bottle that can hang from a backpack via a simple car abineer. A hydrated student equals a happier and mor e productive student. Water bottles are particularly handy if the school is old er and not equipped with air conditioning. week after the Diabetes Society announced that it was closing its doors, regretfully canceling the oppor tunity for more than 100 children with type 1 diabetes to go to camp, the YMCA of Silicon Valley took the lead and found a way to make camp possi ble for these deserving children. With less than thr ee weeks to pull it off, the Y is working feverishly to prepare for YMCA Campo de Los Niños to be held Sunday, Aug. 7 thr ough Saturday, Aug. 13, at YMCA Camp Campbell, located at 16275 Highway 9, Boulder Creek.

The Diabetes Society has run the camp since 1974. YMCA Camp Campbell, a br anch of the YMCA of Silicon Valley, has been one of the host camps for more than three decades. “We are committed to make this happen for these children,” said Elizabeth Jordan, Sr. Vice President of Operations of YMCA of Silicon Valley, “because they look forward to this very special week all year. We’re pulling together the support and par tners we need to ensur e that we are fully organized and equipped to fulfill all the special needs of these campers.” The Y is working with doctors and diabetes health care professionals at Stanford University and Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital to help

Little Joe “live” in Santa Clara By Cinthia Rodriguez – El Observador

M

any would agree that Joe Hernandez of Little Joe y la Familia helped pioneer Tex-Mex music but Hernandez says he just wanted to play music that his dad and compadres listened to. The band’s sound soon evolved into a mixture of eras that include jazz, swing, country, and Spanish music that his family would compose. The music incorporates bits and pieces of many genres and styles. It has a little bit of something for everyone all ages and races. “Although it’s been called Tex-Mex, la onda, and tejano, I call it Chicano music,” said Joe Hernandez during an interview with El Observador. “It’s a form of American music that has r eally not been disco vered nationally or internationally as well as it should be.” The band brings in new audiences all the time. Their music is hand me down music wher e gener ation after gener ation his music gets passed down. The spectators include young adults with their parents and sometimes their grandparents. During the 60’s, the band was for tunate to experience the awakening of the hippy movement while touring in California. The song titled “Las Nubes”, arranged in San Jose, has become one of the band’s signature songs and consider the city a home away from home. “First time I played Japan was something very special to me,” said Hernandez. The front man was first inter ested in Japan’s culture after r eceiving a book that he couldn ’t put down. He was fascinated and knew he wanted to visit the country. After what seemed a lifetime, 14 years exactly, the band booked four dates on the island. Hernandez has also sung for the Pope in his home state of Texas. He has had small roles in different movies and will soon be launching his own salsa products. On July 29, Little Joe y la Familia will be at the Avalon in Santa Clara. Little Joe was in San Jose visiting Damian Trujillo who is celebrating 15 years as a news reporter and producer of Comunidad del Valle, NBC - Bay Area.

to as “fr ankenfoods” for this reason. F or instance, a plant can be engineer ed to become resistant to a pesticide, or even contain i ts o wn p esticides within the p lant c ells, s o that the fields can be sprayed with the chemical and the crops will not die along with weeds. So, what does this mean to you and your family? The truth is, we really don’t know yet. The science has not been ar ound long enough for studies to show the long-term health effects that consuming GMO foods might have. “From a nutrition perspective it’s not hard to connect the dots from GMO crops to health issues. We have exponential increases in digestive issues, allergies and autoimmune diseases today and GMO crops are found in so many of the foods and food products (soy, corn) implicated in these health issues,” says r egistered dietician Ashley K off. “ This is enough for at least 30 other countries to enforce significant restrictions or outright bans on

GMOs because they ar e not considered proven safe. What we do know is that anyone eating GMOs is, in effect, a guinea pig in a very large health experiment.” More and more, people are demanding transparency about what is in the foods they eat. One pr oblem is that the F DA does not r equire that companies disclose if they contain GMOs, so it can be hard to tell which products have them and which do not. What can y ou do if y ou want to avoid GMOs or at least know which foods they are in? 1. Learn more about GMOs at www.nongmoproject.org. 2. L ook for pr oducts that have the Non-GMO Project Verified Seal. This seal means that

a product has been pr oduced according to rigorous best practices f or G MO a voidance a nd evaluated against strict standards. Companies like Nature’s Path, a n e arly s upporter a nd board member of the Non-GMO Project, hav e pr oducts independently tested for GMOs in order to be able to bear the seal - in fact, they are the brand with the most Non-GMO Project verified products. 3. R ead labels. The most common GMO ingredients are non-organic so y, canola, corn and now beet sugar, including all of their derivatives like corn oil, corn syrup, soy protein, soy sauce and canola oil. Av oid products that contain these ingredients unless they are certified o rganic, a s i t i s h ighly

probable they are GMO. 4. Use the Non-GMO shopping guide to make y our grocery shopping lists. You can find the guide at www .nongmoshoppingguide.com, and you can do wnload it to take with you to the market. 5. Go organic. U.S. government law does not allo w genetic engineering to be used in organic production or processing. If you are concerned about what is in the food that you feed to your family, now is the time to learn more about GMOs and look for pr oducts that do not contain them. With a little time and effort, you can feel peace of mind that you are making the best choices for your family.
