n épocas de verano tenemos a los niños en casa y según las estadísticas ocurren accidentes. Por esta razón el Departamento de Policía de San José y la Unidad de Violencia Familiar quieren recordar a los padres, guardianes legales y niñeras a que tengan mucho cuidado con los pequeños, porque los accidentes ocurren cuando usted menos se imagina. Según los datos estadísticos del departamento policial en el 2006 se han investigado 15 casos de caídas de menores de un segundo piso y en el 2008 se reportaron tres caídas. También existe la preocupación de que muchos padres dejan olvidados a sus hijos a interior de sus vehículos y con esta tempe-

raturas estas avanzan en segundos pasando los 115 grados al interior de un vehículo La policía también indica que en los últimos años la policía ha investigado una serie de ahogamientos de menores en las piscinas y en las tinas de baño. Desde el año 2008 se han reportado hasta el momento 6 terribles pérdidas. En abril del año 2002, el departamento de policía rescató a dos pequeños uno de tres años y otro de 10 meses al interior de un vehículo. El padre los dejó porque se fue de compras al centro comer cial. En mayo del año 2000, los policías rescataron a un menor que había sido dejado en el interior de su vehículo mientras su madre se fue al centro comercial del Eastridge en el Este de San José. En Junio del mismo año sucedió una situación similar. Un niño de tres años de edad fue dejado al interior de su vehículo mientras

Lo más trágico del asunto es que tanto padres, guardianes legales o niñeras vivirán con un cargo de conciencia por el daño o la muerte de un menor que fácilmente se puede prevenir. he Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors has adopted a policy which states that minors 12 years old and younger should not be placed in Juvenile Hall and that the county should develop local alternatives for the safe, temporary placement of children 12 and under who commit a serious crime. In a congregate care setting such as Juvenile Hall, the opportunities are numerous for impressionable young children to model the behaviors of the older peers who have often been through the system many times and have developed negative behaviors. As a result, rather than providing them with positive role models to look up to, placing them in Juvenile Hall actually increases the chance that the young children will become repeat offenders. That is not to say that children should not be punished for committing serious crimes; rather that children of that age are easily influenced and that the county should help guide them towards being a good citizen of society. Too often, young children who commit crimes are instantly labeled as being a life-long criminal when with the right atmosphere and mentoring, they can learn right from wrong. By placing young children into Juvenile Hall, there is a risk of further aggravating the trauma that these children have most likely already experienced. According to the study undertaken by the County's Juvenile Justice Commission, 90% of the children

under 13 that have been placed in Juvenile Hall from 2007 to 2009 had a history of trauma or child abuse, a diagnosed mental illness or had an absent parent. Rather than correcting the behavior, this experience of being locked up will most likely make it even harder to educate the youth on how to become a model citizen. As an alternative, the county is developing therapeutic foster homes which allow for a more positive experience for the children who have come into the system. As such, these children will be more likely to respond to the positive inputs provided by the staff in a nurturing environment and will have a greater likelihood of a positive outcome. It is believed that this policy is the first of its kind in the nation. Therefore, I have also asked that the County explore working with neighboring counties to develop a policy of shared placements appropriate for children 12 years old and younger who commit a serious crime. Rather than allowing older criminal offenders to influence another generation, we can break the cycle and steer these young children on the path towards success. And by working with other jurisdictions in the Bay Area, we can design a successful program that will help to guide our youngest members of the community. Ideally this program will be adopted by others around the nation to truly make a difference in the lives of the generations to come. wo recent articles will give you a global perspective about jobs and this Great Recession. One is by Andy Grove, CEO of Intel, published in Bloomberg Businessweek magazine. The other is entitled “They Did Their Homework (800 Years of It), Business Section, page 1, New York Times, July 4, 2010. Both articles are recommended reading. The work of economists Kenneth S. Rogoff and Carmen M. Reinhart (maiden name: Carmen Castellanos. a Cuban immigrant at age 10) was first presented in a book entitled “This Time is Different”, Princeton Press. September 2009. The collection and analysis of 800 years of economic activity throughout the world is presented here. Unlike traditional economists who rely on untested theory, Reinhart and Rogoff base their observation on the fact that this Great Recession is not the first of its kind. The 800 years of historic economic data collected by Carmen Reinhart is the basis for this assertion. The Andy Grove article is entitled “How to Make an American Job”. The very first assertion is that Thomas L. Friedman is very wrong because while startups are wonderful, they do not create employment. This is followed by a very convincing presentation which quantifies Grove’s experiences and observations that following technological developments, a scaling process is required. Grove states, “The scaling process is no longer happening in America.” This scaling process builds the manufacturing capability which provides employemnt to the American labor force. Investment risks are taken by venture capitalists who would provide the capital needed. The cost of scaling up to make a job in America rose over the past forty years from thousands of dollars to billions. Also, the rise in the cost of labor, health care, and retirement benefits rose significantly. Grove says, “Today, manufacturing employment in the U.S. computer industry is about 166,000 lower that it was before the first PC was assembled in 1975.” Since that time a very effective computer manufacturing industry has emerged in Asia, employing about 1.5 million workers…factory employees, engineers and managers.” One example is Foxconn (aka, Hon Hai Precision Industry) with operations in Taiwan and China, which today employs 800,000 individuals and realized revenues of $62 billion. Apple employs 25,000 in the U.S. while 250,000 Foxconn employees in Southern China produce Apple’s products. For every one American employee, ten employees are working in China producing products. This same 10:1 relationship holds for Dell, Seagate, and other U.S. tech companies. In summary, high tech industry has been shipping jobs overseas to Asia while retaining the so-called ‘high-value jobs’ and profits. Grove asks,”What kind of society are we going to have if it consists of highly paid people doing highvalue-added work and masses of unemployed?” It is my observation that corporate leaders of high-tech firms, much like those of the financial industry, have focused on enhancement of profits. In the past corporations were operated to make profits for its stockholders as well as create and provide jobs for the masses of American employees. Today, jobs are outsourced to an extent that is detrimental to maintaining an American consumer economy. All of this is the result of opportunities to generate higher profits in those locales where scaling-up costs and labor costs are much lower than here in America. Grove suggests that government become involved by assessment of a fee onto profits and jobs outsourced. This will require the adoption of ‘job-centric economic theory’ rather than ‘profit oriented economic theory’. This is a very different paradigm than that currently used by those members of Congress who have been in office for too many years. It also requires capitalists to consider more than profiteering. Capitalists must now focus on creating jobs. In a recent discussion with Assemblyman Joe Coto, I pointed out to him that government does not create jobs. It is our creative industries. Government is doing the right thing with its deficit funding of shovel-ready infrastructure projects. However, our capitalists must begin to commit to re-creation of the American manufacturing base that has been shipped overseas. It is that manufacturing base which will provide the employment needed by those 8,000,000 unemployed American laborers. A final note: Labor union leaders need to ‘get it’ in that they must lobby Congress to pass the legislation which re-establishes the manufacturing base which provides employment to their union membership. The global economy has forced America to reconsider its profit oriented public policies.Δ

Community State Budget forces Kidango to make changes

Kidango, a local children's charity providing quality child care, early education, mental health and early intervention services to over 2,500 Bay Area families, announced today that it can no longer sustain 3 of its infant and toddler classrooms in Fremont (2 classrooms) and Livermore (1 classroom). Additionally, its infant/toddler program in Newark will be downsizing from 28 to 8 children. These changes will take place in late July/early August. After careful analysis, Kidango determined that it will be unable to operate these infant and toddler programs without significant financial loss. An in-depth analysis of their finances confirms some inevitable facts: The cost of providing quality infant and toddler care exceeds the agency's ability to continue to support many of these programs. The unreasonably low reimbursement rate provided by the State for subsidized care, combined with the high cost of compensating the staff and the mandates required by the State to meet required staff: child ratios are contributing factors preventing more financially stable programs. Kidango recognizes that the closure of these infant and toddler programs will result in inconvenience and difficulty for the impacted families. Kidango is doing everything it can to accommodate any displaced families at other nearby Kidango locations. Any displaced families will be offered available openings according to the guidelines set forth by Kidango's funding terms and conditions as required by the State of California.

In addition, today is July 1st and there has yet to be a passed State Budget for Fiscal Year 2010-2011. For this reason, Kidango also announced today that it will be unable to reimburse its 22 family child care providers in Santa Clara County for their service to children and families until a State budget is passed. Many of the family child care providers within Kidango's Community Family Services network rely heavily on Kidango's contracts and without payment, they may have to suspend services to children and families until a budget is passed. The State Budget stalemate and proposed budget cuts in the Governor's May revision are greatly impacting Kidango and many other organizations across the State. Kidango continues to advocate for its State funded child care and early education programs, as any additional budget cuts will further impact Kidango's ability to serve families throughout the Bay Area. Kidango programs not only provide children with the strong foundation they need to succeed in school and in the future, but these programs are essential to the livelihoods of Bay Area families, and therefore the California economy. n between going to the beach and family vacations, it's important for teens to make time for college planning. Summer is a perfect time for students to build their academic skills and set up a college planning schedule. Renﾃｩe Gernand, director of College Planning Services at the College Board, advises, "If you work together as a family, by the time the senior year of high school rolls around, you'll be on track to graduate and go to college." Here are some easy ways to help your children stay on the college path this summer. Practice Reading and Writing Thirty minutes of reading a day can do wonders for developing comprehension and communication skills - both are necessary for college success. Encourage your children to read books, newspapers or magazines. Need a suggestion? Check out 101 Great Books on collegeboard.com/padres under the tab Plan for College. To hone writing skills, students can keep a journal or blog, or by getting a head start on their college application essays. Get Tutoring According to summer school teacher Manny Martﾃｭnez of San Jose, Calif., even though a child may not have been required to enroll in a summer

course, he encourages parents to ask their children what skills they'd like to build and seek help. Community organizations or colleges in your area offer summer programs that build academic skills through fun activities. Look for lowcost or free programs through agencies like the YMCA and Boys & Girls Clubs. Seek Internships and Ways to Volunteer Many kids enthusiastically seek summer work to earn spending money, but it should not be the only consideration. Internships or volunteer jobs help teens become excited about possible careers and college majors. Internships also build life skills: self-confidence, responsibility and teamwork. Volunteer work helps kids see that they can make a difference in society. Encourage your children to follow their interests. For example, if they love animals, they can work at a pet shelter or the zoo. Start the search close to home and on your city's website. Internships and volunteer work also look great on college applications. Students show they have the ambition and the values to improve their university community. Identify Colleges and Scholarships Even if your child hasn't chosen a career, they should still identify what they want in a college and make a list of schools to consider. The College Board recommends students apply to five to eight colleges that they believe are a good

fit for them. Find out when orientations are taking place and get a head start on visiting the schools. Most financial aid comes from the government or colleges, but scholarships can come in handy. Study for College Admission Tests If your child plans to take a college entrance exam, he or she should become familiar with the test through a study plan that offers practice questions and tests. San Jose Evergreen Community College District Will Offer Training For 500 Skilled Jobs In Green Industry

he San José_Evergreen Community College District (SJECCD) has been awarded a $2,000,000 grant from the California Economic Development Department to provide new jobs and training for many professional workers, displaced workers, and former NUMMI employees. This grant represents one of only six that were awarded throughout California. The innovative action plan provided by the Workforce Institute, a division of SJECCD, will train worers for 500 skilled jobs in a wide range of positions within the Efficient Energy Home Building Performance market. "California is already seeing green job growth, but we must continue working to accelerate this trend. These Challenge grants will encourage innovative green companies to train and hire

Parks Acquisition Plan Public Workshops The County of Santa Clara Parks and Recreation Department is seeking public input to guide the County’s future parkland acquisition efforts. The voters approved the current Park Charter Fund in 2006, ensuring funding through 2021 for acquisition, development, operation, and maintenance of the County’s 46,000-acre 28park system. Fifteen percent of the funding is allocated specifically for land acquisition. Three community workshops are scheduled for July for the public to provide input on future direction of the County’s purchase of parkland, including trails. The three meetings will be held from 7 to 9 PM at: the Cupertino Community Hall on July 6; the Morgan Hill Community Center on July 12; and the Mayfair Community Center in San Jose on July 14. The public is encouraged to

attend one or more of these workshops. The workshops will provide an overview of current County parks, the planned Countywide Trail System, and future park expansion areas as identified in the County General Plan. While the updated Parks Acquisition Plan will not identify specific parcels to be acquired, the public will have an opportunity in these workshops to help identify acquisition criteria and provide other thoughts about parkland acquisition to County staff. A summary of the public input will be presented to the Board of Supervisors in August. The first County park to be purchased was the 400-acre Stevens Creek County Park in 1924 for $27,500. Voters established the County Park Charter Fund in 1972. As of 2010, approximately 46,000 acres of land have been incorporated into the County’s 28-park system.

"Through the Workforce Institute's training programs and industry partnerships we are creating immediate and long-term employment opportunities within the home performance market while paving the way towards sustained efficient energy usage throughout Santa Clara County," said Executive Director Carol Coen. The initiative will utilize a three-tiered training approach that will reduce barriers to the deployment of efficient energy practices and upcoming incentive programs. The following are degrees or industry credentials that will be offered: · Level 1-Outreach Specialists/Assessors providing lead generation for retrofit contrac-

tors. · Level 2-Home Performance Certification & Building Information Management (BIM) for Efficient Energy provided for contractors with experience in the construction field. · Level 3-Integration Demand Side Management (IDSM) for Power Engineers providing efficient energy analysis and management. The training is scheduled to begin in Winter, 2010. This initiative is a partnership of SJECCD's Workforce Institute, PG&E, the California Building Performance Contractors Association, and the NUMMI Transition Center Network to identify and meet the short and long-term workforce needs of the Efficient Energy Home Building Performance market. Santa Clara County Uses Novel Approach to Influence Residents to Sign Up for Emergency Alert Notices SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CALIF.—Santa Clara County is using a novel approach to encourage people living or working in the county to sign up at AlertSCC.com to receive emergency alert messages. Patterning its newest public awareness campaign tool after social networking web sites, the County’s AlertSCC site is now a place where people can go to share a photo along with an invitation to friends and loved ones to sign up their mobile devices. And in the future, they might be featured in an AlertSCC ad campaign. “We take seriously the responsibility for making sure people are prepared for disasters,” said Santa Clara County Board President Ken Yeager, who championed bringing the AlertSCC system to the county. “But just because it’s a serious matter doesn’t mean that residents can’t have a little fun encouraging the people they know to sign up for alerts.” The “little fun” is the “I Love You. Please Sign Up.” campaign and its new social networking tool to tell a friend. The

In the public sector, coordination of emergency response and mutual aid is one example of this. It is appropriate that Santa Clara County now has an emergency alert system and that residents can use a social networking tool to get the word out. “We can make the best plans for disaster mitigation, response and recovery,” said Yeager. “But to really be effective, we have to be able to get those messages to people who might be affected. We don’t want to rely only on landlines because the disaster might strike when you are out to dinner, or on vacation. Signing up mobile devices is the best way to ensure you’ll get these messages in a timely manner.”

By law, local governments are responsible for disaster response and the recovery their communities. Cities throughout the county are participating in AlertSCC so that both the County and its cities can send emergency notifications. At the same time, the County and cities are drilling employees on how to step up in a disaster to help with response and recovery such has mass care and shelter. “These are things that people don’t like to think about. ANTA CLARA COUNTY, CALIF. - The Santa Clara County Vector Control District (SCCVCD) confirmed on June 30 that adult mosquitoes collected from the Moorpark Avenue / Winchester Boulevard area of San Jose tested positive for West Nile virus (WNV). The detection of mosquitoes infected with WNV has prompted the scheduling of mosquito fogging in the surrounding area, in an effort to prevent human cases of WNV. Weather permitting, the ground fogging is scheduled for Tuesday, July 13, at 11 PM, and will last several hours. "As part of the District's ongoing efforts of surveillance and control of mosquitoes, we will be conducting ground fogging to suppress the biting adult mosquitoes," said Acting District Manager Russ Parman. "It is important this holiday weekend for residents to take precautions to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes while outdoors. We have every indication that West Nile Virus is very active at this time." The fogging area is bordered by Pruneridge/Hedding on the north, Saratoga Avenue on the west, Highway 880 on the east, and Payne Avenue on the south. Information packets will be distributed in the fogging area next week to notify residents about the fogging campaign. A community informational open house meeting has been scheduled for Friday, July 9 at the Asian Americans for Community Involvement Community Center, room 210, 2400 Moorpark Avenue, San Jose, CA 95128, from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM. Residents located in the fogging area are encouraged to attend the open house. Residents can visit the District's website at www.sccvector.org to view a map of the fogging zone, as well as sign up for e-mail notification of any WNV activity in the County. Residents may also call the District's WNV recorded hotline, at 800-314-2427 for up-todate information. Transmitted by mosquito bites, WNV can cause mild to severe flu-like symptoms such as fever, headache and body ache, and, in severe cases, significant neurological symptoms or even death. People over 50 and those with high

blood pressure are at higher risk for severe illness. In 2009, California reported 129 WNV infections, with 112 symptomatic cases and 4 human fatalities. While no human cases of WNV have been confirmed in Santa Clara County this year, fogging to suppress WNV-infected mosquitoes is needed to reduce the imminent risk of transmission of the virus to humans. Precautions that can be taken against mosquito bites are: At home: - DRAIN or DUMP standing water weekly since this is where mosquitoes lay eggs. Check items such as flowerpots and planter bases, toys, cans, leaky water faucets and sprinklers, rain gutters, buckets, pools, ponds, and old tires. - Make sure your DOORS and windows have tight-fitting screens. Outdoors: - Limit activities during DUSK & DAWN to prevent mosquito bites. Those are the times when the mosquitoes that transmit WNV are most active. If you need to go outside at dusk or dawn, or when in an area where mosquitoes are active: - Apply insect repellent containing D.E.E.T., Picaridin, or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus (p-menthane diol), following label instructions. - DRESS in long sleeve shirts and long pants, preferably of light colors. Dead birds and squirrels may indicate the presence of West Nile Virus. The Vector Control District asks Santa Clara County residents to call if they find crows, jays, sparrows, finches, birds of prey, or tree squirrels that have been dead for less than 48 hours and do not appear to have died because of an injury. Residents are encouraged to report dead birds and squirrels to the State of California WNV hotline at 877-WNV-BIRD or at www.westnile.ca.gov. For assistance on mosquito control, residents can contact the SCCVCD office by calling (408) 918-4770 / (800) 675-1155.

l pasado 6 de julio el presidente Barack Obama dijo que es inconstitucional ante una corte de Phoenix la legislación antiinmigrante SB 1070 de Arizona, que entrará en vigencia el próximo 29 de julio. Algunos piensan que esta medida es acertada y otros quieren que esto no sea un pretexto para olvidar la reforma migratoria. El Departamento de Justicia argumentó que esa legislación no sólo es violatoria de la ley de supremacía de la Constitución en la medida que la migración es regulada por normas federales y no estatales, sino que puede derivar en hostigamiento contra extranjeros y estadounidenses. "Las leyes de migración de la nación, reflejan un balance cuidadoso de la aplicación de la ley a nivel nacional, relaciones exteriores e interés humanitario. Un Estado no puede establecer sus propias leyes de migración", indicó el presidente. “El presidente Obama tuvo valor politico cuando la mayoría del público no latino está a favor de la ley. La intervención del Departamento de Justicia proyecta respeto por parte de las cortes y este pronunciamiento va a causar un gran efecto”, dijo el analista político Miguel Chacón. "La Constitución y la ley federal no permiten el desarrollo de parches de políticas migratorias estatales y locales por todo el país", agregó. "Aplaudo al presidente Obama y al fiscal federal por su decisión de comenzar este litigio contra el estado de Arizona. La ley es antinconstitucional, antihumana, viola derechos básicos y humanos y crea divisiones entre la comunidad inmigrante y no inmigrantes", dijo el abogado en inmigración, Mark Silverman. Por su parte José Sandoval de Voluntarios de la Comunidad dijo que es una muestra de que el presidente Obama reconoce la necesidad de acabar

con una ley antiinmigrante que promueve el perfil racial y genera zozobra, miedo terror y abuso en las comunidades inmigrantes". Polo Martínez, representante de CCISCO (Organización de Apoyo Comunitaria de Fe en Contra Costa) dijo que es un paso adelante para prevenir la discriminación. El presidente dejó claro que esto no es trabajo de los estados sino del gobierno federal. Queremos que Obama siga empujando a los republicanos". ¿Ley derrocada" El próximo 22 de julio se va a iniciar la evaluación de la demanda. Con la del presidente se suman a cuatro las demandas interpuestas para evitar a que tome efecto. La legislación SB 1070, promulgada por la gobernadora republicana de Arizona, Jan Brewer, en plena temporada electoral, fue rechazada en todos los Estados Unidos, incluso las asociaciones de jefes de policía a nivel nacional le dieron un rotundo no. Hace un mes atrás los jefes de policía de diferentes ciudades entre ellas San José indicó que la SB1070 estaba destruyendo la relaciones que los efectivos tienen con sus comunidades. El procurador federal de Estados Unidos, Eric Holder, reconoció que el público de Arizona está "entendiblemente frustrado con la inmigración ilegal", y admitió que el gobierno federal tiene la responsabilidad de encarar esas preocupaciones.

hecho el gobernador, a la escuela primaria Merrit Trace le llovió sobre mojado. Las primeras horas del 5 de julio un incendio arrasó con el pabellón A de la escuela loca lizada en la 651 de la avenida Dana en el vecindario de Rose Garden en San José. El incendio que se produjo a las 4 :17 am fue declarado de 6 alarmas. Más de 10 unidades de cisternas con 100 bomberos fueron a apagar el incendio que se presume fue provocado. Con la ayuda de caninos los investigadores siguen buscando elementos que inician un incendio y se espera dar detalles en el transcurso de los próximos días. "Trace es una escuela de bellas artes. De hecho, tienen el teatro, la música y tienen banda que ninguna otra escuela tiene. Y ahora no parece que van a tener mucho de nada por un tiempo",dijo José Ramirez padre de familia. "Estaba dormida pero me levantó el ruido de los bomberos y de pronto nos pidieron cerrar ventanas y puertas", dijo una de las residentes que no quiso ser identificada. Pasado el mediodía los bomberos seguían trabajando con este incendio y para garantizar se apague por completo tuvieron que demoler

todo el pabellón ubicado al interior de esta escuela. Clases con normalidad Las autoridades educativas indicaron que pese a esta tragedia la escuela estará ope rativa el próximo 16 de agosto como lo tiene programado el distrito. Están evaluando los daños y quieren asegurarse que los menores que asisten a la escuela desde el jardín hasta el quinto grado no corran peligro. A esta escuela asisten casi 1,000 estudiantes y el 45% de la población estudiantil es latina. La escuela de artes cuenta con un programa de doble inmersión. Ayuda La agencia bancaria Wells Fargo donó $25,000 para iniciar los trabajos que tienen que hacer para levantar aulas móviles. En breve se establecerá un fondo especial para la Escuela Primaria Trace. Las autoridades tienen que pagar 100 mil dólares deductibles de lo que corresponde al seguro. alifornia is currently facing a budget crisis and Governor Schwarzenegger is proposing a cutback on several social programs in order to resolve the situation. However, by cutting these social programs, the governor will negatively affect the lives of several of California's residents, many of which are legal immigrants. On Tuesday, July 6, Assemblymembers Jim Beall, and Joe Coto met some of their constituents to discuss how cutting certain social programs will affect their lives. "The Assembly and Senate have already rejected the governor's proposal to cut funds for Cash Assistance Program for Immigrant (CAPI) and the California Food Assistance Program (CFAP)," Assemblymember Beall said. "We are here to listen to your stories and to remind our colleagues in Sacramento why it is important to keep these programs in our communities." "We are committed to rejecting any of the governor's proposals that negatively affect our community," added Assemblymember Coto. Medi-cal and CalWORKs are two other programs that the governor has proposed to cut. "The governor proposed to cut these programs in January and May of this year," said Zelica Rodriguez, Policy Advocacy Program Director, for the Services. Immigration Rights and Education Network (SIREN). "Cutting these programs will greatly affect the lives of legal immigrants. This is a matter of life and death for some people." (CAPI): The CAPI program provides critical support for immigrant seniors and persons with disabilities, providing critical cash assistance for housing and food to roughly about 550 in Santa Clara County. California Food Assistance Program (CFAP): CFAP provides critical nutrition assistance to approximately 2,000 people in Santa Clara County. In difficult economic times, hard-working families should not be forced to go hungry. CFAP also provides a critical economic stimulus because food stamps are spent immediately in local stores. CalWORKs: Statewide, 24,000 recent lawful immigrants receive assistance under CalWORKs. Many are survivors of domestic violence. Medi-Cal: Preventive full-scope Medi-Cal allows lowincome Californians to access timely and costsaving medical care. “La gente no tiene idea de lo que escucha”: Alfonso Maya Entrevista con EO

Por Rosario Vital El Observador EO: ¿Dónde radicas en este momento? AM: Vivo en la ciudad de México, ya desde hace unos dos años y viví en Cuernavaca, mi ciudad natal. EO: Háblanos de tu última producción. AM: Fué una situación de coincidencia con otros músicos dedicados al género del jazz, me gustaba como tocaban y los invité a participar porque además el guitarrista era mi maestro. EO: ¿Crees que en los últimos años las composiciones en canciones han mejorado o siguen igual o peor? AM: Las canciones no pueden ser igual o peor, necesariamente tienen que ser mejores si te dedicas a eso y si además se van sumando experiencias y conocimientos, tanto del instrumento como de tu propia conciencia como ser humano. EO: En el mundo de la música ha proli ferado la música "regetonera" y las bandas mexicanas ¿Qué crees que está pasando? AM:Pienso que la gente no tiene ninguna idea de lo que consume, solo se deja llevar por la parafernalia publicitaria, si tu música paga para sonar todo el tiempo, la gente lo va a consumir porque muchas veces solo tiene acceso a eso, no existen muchos medios alternativos de información y en general la gran masa de gente no se da tiempo de investigar. EO: ¿Cuáles son tus planes a corto y largo plazo? AM: Pretendo grabar un disco que pueda ser del gusto de la gente, pero que también sea de mi propio gusto, pretendo llevarlo más lejos aún y que se enteré del trabajo la mayor gente posible, pretendo seguir viviendo de mi música, pretendo

hacer mejores canciones como cada año ha sido y seguir dejando constancia de mi obra que se quedé entre la generaciones venideras. EO: ¿Consideras que la música cambia a la gente o a sociedades? ¿Cómo harías este cambio? AM: Si, por supuesto que cambia a la gente y no solo eso, también sus principios, sus normas, sus costumbres, sus ideas, cambia su estado de ánimo, su energía, su trato con los demás. EO: ¿Cómo harías este cambio? AM:Quitaría de la radio toda la chatarra que no propone nada y que solo esta embruteciendo a la sociedad, sonaría solo temas que tuvieran contenido y propuesta, sonaría también toda la música independiente, sin límites ni corrupción de payola por ejemplo, dejaría sentada la pro puesta de que todos tienen derecho a ser escuchados sin preferencias. Creo que es una utopía porque cada día el mundo se mueve alrededor del dinero y la música comercial es precisamente con este sentido, hay que tener bien claro que es lo que haces, si haces arte o haces comercio. EO: Un mensaje final AM: Mi música nace de la necesidad de expresar lo que pienso y siento de viva voz, así como soy, sin pretender que sea del agrado de nadie, solo por nacer es que existe y solo para una propia catarsis. Muchas veces afortunadamente, la gente se identifica con lo que canto y me compañan en este camino tan dificil y tan largo de hacer canciones. AN JOSE, Calif. - The San Jose Earthquakes, the City of San Jose, the San Jose Sports Authority and the San Jose Downtown Association announced that they will host a viewing party in the SoFa District of San Jose for the World Cup Final match on July 11. The free event is slated to begin at 9 a.m. PT. The game will kick off at 11:30 a.m. PT. The block from 1st St. and San Carlos Ave. will be blocked off and a giant video display will broadcast the game facing South from San Carlos. Additionally, there will be an Earthquakes festival area with inflatables for families

near 1st Street and San Salvador. Verizon Wireless will also have a fan interactive area.
