Let’s look at both the Good and the Bad

y column has been absent from this space for six weeks because I have been assisting my daughter, a nurse in Nevada, take care of her preemie twin babies. In feeding, diapering, bathing and swaddling baby Gracie and baby Ruthie, and after raising my own children to adulthood, I have the exquisite opportunity once again for the most important labor of love in the world: nurturing a child. As I held my grand daughters, I looked into their tiny angelic faces, their eyes staring into my eyes, and I pondered their future. At this age they are total possibility: future scientists, legislators, artists, educators, astronauts. Time, nurturing, education and dedication will tell for my babies, for all babies, what they will be. They are adored by our extended family and I know that every need, birthday wish, and enriching experience will be provided to the extend possible within our middle class ability. I know that a quality education, from pre-school to graduate school is on their horizon as they age into childhood, adolescence and young adulthood. But as I look into their eyes, I imagine the eyes of other babies—equally needing to be fed every two hours, kept warm to sleep well, with parents safe in their homes, secure in their livelihoods to provide for their children who they surely love as much as I love my grand babies. How many children are not assured of the most basic needs: food, shelter, healthcare, and education? The answer is that although our nation can easily ensure that all children “born in the U.S.A.,” as the song goes, can have all their needs met, this does not happen. Prenatal health care to ensure healthy development is not a given, as babies are born everyday with preventable congenital illnesses, often condemned to diminished lives. Mothers addicted to drugs give birth to babies toxic with alcohol, cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, or HIV. Parents living on the streets or shelters have no secure home to take their baby after birth. Our nation, the richest in history, has a child poverty rate (according to the United Nations)) of 22%, only slightly less than Mexico’s rate of 26%. This measure is substantiated by a U.S. Census Bureau report that 26% of Latino children in California live below the poverty level of $13,000 for a family of three. More alarming, this data is prior to the expected peak of our current financial meltdown of closed factories, home foreclosures, and more than one in ten workers unemployed. A number of states are joining California’s approaching bankrupt status, limiting or even eliminating the very safety-net services for children and families created after the Great Depression that may be eclipsed by our current national economic mismanagement. Prior to this dismal economy, parents earning low wages (under-employed) or no wages at all (un-employed) qualified for services, including subsidized childcare, so that they could work or train for work, and equally important—to ensure child safety, good nutrition, a nurturing environment and the early educational development of infants. These are exactly the CalWORKs programs being ironically terminated by the Terminator Governor— a billionaire whose four children are assured the best of everything that money, fame and ruling elite connections can offer. But what are the prospects for the children of the non-famous, not wealthy, not well connected? What public infrastructure will remain after the state budget cuts for the children and families, not just for the low-income, but also for the middle-income working families whose modest American Dream is to raise a family, nurture their children, provide them with a quality education, and the benefits of a lifetime of honest work and responsible citizenship? As a society we are shortchanging too many of our children, failing to nurture their potential as future scientists, educators, compassionate leaders, inspiring poets, and enlightened world citizens. Our present economic myopia squanders the future, perhaps even the survival of our society. usually has the consent of those being governed. Volunteer Work An Invaluable Experience Did you know that though unemployment is 11.2% (and probably higher in Latino communities) and that summer jobs for students are in short supply? However, there are many non-profit organizations which are looking for volunteers. Latino youth, in particular, need to be encouraged to be community volunteers. However, to gain the most out of a volunteer job, try to find one wherein you learn a skill or are supervised by a senior employee who will take time to be a counselor and mentor. Many individuals end up being hired by an organization after being a volunteer who becomes a known person whose skills, communication styles and personality fit the company’s needs. Are you aware of the many good things done by local civic groups? Kiwanis, Pueblo de San Jose (Gloria Torres, President) and Kiwanis, East Valley Chapter, have both raised monies which are used to do things for needy youth and to award scholarships? Their “Turn Around Scholarships” are provided to Latino youth who are still in high school. The San Jose American GI Forum Scholarship Foundation, whose board membership includes representatives of the GI Forum, San Jose Chapter, and the GI Forum, East Valley Chapter, have made awards exceeding $30,000 to deserving high school applicants who plan to con-

tinue their education. This is a good thing, however, more will be done to support the best and brightest students in our community when more small businesses contribute at least $100 each. If every local Latino owned and operated business provided $100, an estimated $1,400,000 could be raised and distributed as scholarships. The good is that this is possible; the bad is that it has not yet happened to this level of engagement. Los Amigos de Washington Elementary School and The Digital Club are both committees of the Rotary Club of San Jose. These two groups will be merged this year because one supports the school with literacy mentors, a career fair along with underwriting the costs of Thanksgiving, Christmas gifts, and field trips (all needing funding) and the Digital Club has been providing computers, computer training, and has become an effective fundraiser. Principal Maria Arias Evans has been delighted with the support provided and creative in directing its use. This is a good thing. The point being made is that in spite of two wars, political unrest, high local unemployment, and an economy damaged by greed and dishonesty, many ordinary people are going about their lives and coping very well. Those who cope best are the ones who make it a point to help others according to need and ability to provide. A good mental health exercise is to take a look at both the good and the bad in your own life.Δ

an you imagine it happening here? The Iranian demonstrations involving millions of individuals who are asking “What happened to my vote?” This has been occurring since that election’s outcome was announced within an hour of closure of the polls. Note the extensive influence of the Islamic religious authorities. Now contrast this to the concept of “separation of church and state’ here in America where every vote must be counted. Election outcomes are determined by a transparent process which is the result poll watchers, observers, and the Federal Department of Justice officials who monitor the vote counting process to ensure its honesty, objectivity and correctness. Remember that this was not always so. Jim Crow laws are a thing of the past and now women can vote. Consider the creative application and use of twitter, facebook and texting. These communication systems can be applied when one’s cell phone may access the internet for emails. The Iranian officials did their best to ‘jam’ these electronic communication systems, however, enough information got transmitted that several news services could provide news coverage which we all viewed on our local television news. The good thing is that event news was made available to all who were interested. Another good outcome was that the autocratic authorities in Iran could not suppress the concerns of their people who were asking “What happened to my vote?” An effective stable government

Time for Immigration Reform is Now allowed big business to exploit both sides. Clearly, working-class citizens and immigrant workers have much in common - dreams of better homes, education for their families and quality healthcare. There is more that brings us together, than separates us. United we can be a strong force for change, changes that that bring more workforce safety and humane conditions. Immigration is often portrayed as an explosive, divisive issue. In reality it’s not. Since the repeal of the national origins quota system in 1965, which discriminated against certain immigrants, a consensus has been building towards an immigration system that respects the country’s core values. These include economic opportu-

T

he White House and members of Congress must move quickly on enacting a just and humane immigration reform package that will reunite families, reinvigorate the economy, and remove the term “illegal or undocumented immigrants” from the dialogue in this country. Ethnic media, which reaches over 60 million adults in the United States, calls on Congress to move decisively on immigration reform because there are few issues as important to the nation’s well-being as an overhaul of the inefficient, inhumane and economically debilitating immigration system. More importantly, we are also urging our readers and viewers to contact their Senators and Congress-

men and let them know that immigration reform must be a national priority. The immigration system is broken not just for 12 million undocumented immigrants, but also for specialized workers blocked from joining the American economy because of narrow quotas, and mothers and fathers and brothers and sisters of U.S. citizens who must wait for years before being reunited with their families. Our nation needs comprehensive immigration policies that will replace a broken system of raids and roundups with one that protects all workers from exploitation, improves America’s security and builds strong communities. It’s time to end the division between workers, which has

nity, equality under the law regardless of ethnic background, and an embrace of the world’s most innovative, energetic and ambitious workers. Now, with the country facing serious competition from workers abroad, it’s more important than ever to create a world-class immigration system. It’s for the good for families, good for communities and good for America. This editorial was produced in association with New America Media (www.newamericamedia.org), a national association of ethnic media, and was published by ethnic media across the country this week to bring attention to the urgency of immigration reform

Don’t Drink Your Baby’s Future Away Mothering Begins Before Birth

E

very year, more than 40,000 babies are born with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.

Do you know what fetal alcohol syndrome is? Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is the leading known cause of mental retardation and developmental disabilities in children. It is caused when a mom drinks alcohol while she’s pregnant. Alcohol acts like a poison and can permanently damage a baby’s development. A baby with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome may have slow growth, facial defects and brain damage. The good news is that Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is 100% preventable! By not drinking alcohol while pregnant, a mom can prevent her unborn baby from developing Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. The US Surgeon General says that NO amount of alcohol is safe while pregnant. Beer, wine, wine coolers, hard

liquor (whiskey, rum, vodka, etc.) and liqueurs all contain alcohol. Any alcohol that a pregnant woman drinks goes straight into her baby’s tiny body. So don’t drink your baby’s future away! The effects of alcohol in pregnancy will last a lifetime. If you are pregnant and are concerned about your alcohol consumption, stop drinking today and talk with your doctor. For help to stop drinking, please call: Gateway: Alcohol and Drug Adult Managed-Care Services at 1-800-488-9919 or contact Alcoholics Anonymous in Santa Clara County 12 step support group meetings at 408-374-8511. For more information on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, please contact your doctor or FIRST 5 Santa Clara County at 408.260.3700 or www.first5kids.org.

ate last year, the County of Santa Clara Board of Supervisors approved the creation of an honorary post of Santa Clara County Poet Laureate. The position was given to Nils Peterson. Peterson’s job as Poet Laureate is to elevate poetry in the awareness of Santa Clara County residents and to help celebrate the literary arts; serve as an advocate for poetry, literature, and the arts; contribute to Santa Clara County’s poetry and literacy legacy; and lead a community project that makes poetry more accessible. Peterson’s first task was to create a poem that embodied the lives and experiences of those that live in Santa Clara County. He created this poem by asking residents of Santa Clara County to write and submit lines about their lives in the county. “I received roughly 500 lines and used 100 of them to create the poem,” Peterson said. “The poem is called A Family Album, Santa Clara County, 2009.” In order for the lines to be selected, Peterson said that the lines had to be between 9 and 13 syllables long. “There are many reasons for this,” Peterson said. “The first, and more obvious is that it gives a uniformity to the end product. It also gives a challenge. One learns that to say something beautiful is to use up three syllables, which one could use to show its beauty.” The poem consists of six sections; Work, People, Our Lives, What Was Lost, What’s Here, and The Look of Our Place. Some of the lines in the poem included, “From plump, purple plums to shiny silver apples”, “A hint of garlic seasons the morning fog”, and “Heading west on Hedding and the road looks like a feel”. Peterson choked up as he read the entire poem. “We have a broad range of people in this county,” Peterson said. “Our county consists of people of different ethnicities, different ages, different levels of employment. We are very lucky to have each other here in Santa Clara County.” All contributors to the poem had their names printed below the section of the poem they contributed. For more information on the poem call the Santa Clara County office of Public Affairs at (408) 299-5119.Δ

Graduating Students Ask “Now What?” I

magine working hard through college and earning a degree in one of many fields. Imagine the excitement and joy about the possibility of making decent pay and working reasonable hours. Then, imagine being told that after all your hard work and dedication, the only job that you are able to get is flipping burgers or serving food. Gabriel is a San Jose State graduate who has had to hear these words. “I graduated from San Jose State in 2007 and received a degree in industrial engineering,” Gabriel said. “I want to be able to put my degree to use.” Gabriel believes that immigration reform is needed because it will motivate students to stay in school and better themselves. “A lot of these students have nothing to look forward to and end up dropping out,” Gabriel said. “They need a reason to stay in school.” Another student who may have to find work at a restaurant rather then use his degree to achieve something better in their life is Fernando.

“Because of my undocumented status, I will not be able to go to medical school,” Fernando said. According to the Bay Area DREAM Act Coalition, approximately 65,000 students graduate from U.S. high schools each year and have been in the country more than five years, but face limited prospects for completing their education or working legally in the U.S. because they were brought here at a young age without immigration documents. Approximately 50,000 undocumented students are currently enrolled in higher education institutions across the U.S. and are eligible for the DREAM Act. They are educating themselves in hopes of DREAM Act passage so they can legalize their status and pursue their dreams. Currently, only a small fraction of undocumented students who graduate from high school go on to college. Some who support the Dream Act are also upset that the current version of the Dream Act includes military services as an option to gain citizenship. According to www.one-voice.info, the current version of the Dream Act isn’t only about education, it is bipartisan legislation that dangerously ties education and recruiting immigrants into the military with

gaining U.S. citizenship. Military recruiters have free access to high schools across America, particularly in poor and disenfranchised communities. The Pentagon spends billions of dollars every year marketing the military. Their advertising strategy is simple: utilize a slick

and flashy marketing campaign to glorify war and killing to children and young people. For more information on the Dream Act and other forms of immigration reform visit www.reformimmigrationforamerica.com, or call 1(866) 961-2143.
