tion between labor and trade unions, employers, and Work2Future a new national curriculum was refined to fit the needs of local students. “Everyone that started this program has graduated and I think that’s testimony to the dedication and focus of all of you who took the time to really empower yourself in a difficult time in our economy,” said Jeff Ruster, of Work2Future. The concept of a green job was behind the program, and the connections were made with construction groups. That type of work has to go through changes to keep up with the demand of green jobs in San Jose. Construction leads to new pathways for the workers and makes it a lot easier to get into green jobs. “This is not a one time effort, this is a piece to the puzzle in which we can do better for the community,” said Neil Struthers of Building & Construction Trades Council of Santa Clara & San Benito Counties. The program provides a career that some of the students wouldn’t have had access to otherwise. Silicon Valley is one of the first communities to test out the curriculum, where the students also have the option of enter a five-year training program. The organizers also believe

the program opens many doors to the graduates. “We brought the best instructors for each entity, we combined the instructors from Local #95, the Santa Clara County Building and Trades Council, the Workforce Institute, to give you the best of the best,” said Carol Coen, from Workforce Institute. Fourteen men with different backgrounds completed the four-week program. Some didn’t know what to expect, considering they had never worked on a roof, while others were already part of a union. It was hands-on experience that taught them everything from using a nail gun to the fundamentals of leadership. “I’m actually pretty happy that I joined the group and everything worked out really well,” said Francisco Heredia. “I learned a lot more than I thought I would.” The graduates were: Juan Alvarado, Jose Avila, Kip Burrus, Francisco Castaneda, Marco Castaneda, Jesse Diaz, Horacio Fuentes, Francisco Heredia, Kane Howell, Adam Mariscal, Alfred Redding, Abdul Saleh, Ricardo Solis, and Ruben Trujillo. “This is an incredible group of individuals,” said Dan Smith, of Roofers & Waterproofers Local #95. “I would employ every single one of them.”

Accompanying his mother to the U.S. as a four-year old along to escape domestic abuse. As the Boston Globe editorialized, “What country wouldn’t want to be home to someone like Eric Balderas?” Last Friday, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) granted Balderas “deferred action,” allowing him to stay in the U.S. and continue his studies. While the Balderas story is a particularly egregious example of the counterproductive nature of our broken immigration system, his story is far from unique. Absent immigration reform legislation such as the DREAM Act, the thousands of similar cases that have not risen to the Balderas level of notoriety may not have a similarly positive resolution. fter reading the report entitled "Jury Chastises Water Leader" (San Jose Mercury News, Local News Section, page 1, June 21, 2010) I decided to check out this report. A phone call to Ms. Gloria Chacon, manager of the Civil Grand Jury, resulted in her providing the web site address: www.sccsuperiorcourt.org/jury/GJ.html. Frankly, I was very surprised to learn that the document at this web site was not the presentation of the 2009 Civil Grand Jury Report which I wanted to read. My objective was to read the original grand jury report. What I had accessed was a summary interpretation thereof by a group named "Valley Water Watchdog". The three individuals named in this report are S.Kingman, Webmaster; R.Cerruti, Research; and T. Mahurin, Archives. I recommend that all go to this website to see for themselves the skewed information report that was on the Civil Grand Jury's Website. My concern is that the report I read online directly presented questions and answers which are skewed towards making the current Board of Directors, Santa Clara Valley Water District look like they are a group of self-serving incompetents. No reference is made to the effective operation of a system of water reservoirs and aquifers which have provided potable water to the residents of the County of Santa Clara during the recent three year drought. Richard Santos, current Chair, BOD, SCVWD, is alleged to have influenced the SCVWD board to engage in two projects which increase the commercial value of his family's property holdings in the Alviso Community. Recall that the same type of allegation had been made with respect to former Mayor Tom McHenry's property holdings in San Jose. In this case the SJ Redevelopment Agency agreed to spend millions for improvements in the San Pedro Square area which inevitably impacted the value of all properties. It takes no genius to discern that the recent two improvements in Alviso would possibly increase property values in Alviso. After all, that Education Center and that boat launching facility are needed improvements which have already attracted traffic to the Alviso Slough. Grand Jury of the County of Santa Clara. As a former member of the 1990-91 Civil Grand Jury, what I saw and read could not be a 'Civil Grand Jury Report', rather it is a very slanted opinion piece which reflects the objectives of ValleyWaterWatchdogs'. This experience underscores the unreliable nature of email and the internet when communicating information which is supposedly from a reliable official source. The material posted by ValleyWaterWatchdog.org had the purpose of a political hit piece targeting not only Richard Santos, but the entire SCVWD Board. The report in the San Jose Mercury news also is quite slanted. Santos was required to recuse himself (i.e., not vote) when he had a conflict of interest. It neglects the reality that the remaining six elected SCVWD board members voted on all the matters which resulted in the building of an education center, a boat launching facility and dredging the Alviso Slough, where the Guadalupe River and the Coyote Creek drain into the southern tip of the San Francisco Bay. Alviso, years ago, was the harbor for San Jose when it was the capital of California. Alviso properties have subsided as a result of overuse of the aquifers to the extent that its properties are now 13 feet below sea level. In this very complex issue, Santos is the beneficiary of a check & balance system. It was the SCVWD board that passed all the motions authorizing those two projects. In the scheme of things, the total expenditure of about $5 million to underwrite those two projects is a pittance when compared to the billions spent by county and local city governments. The Civil Grand Jury uses the continued relationship of Santos with local community civic organizations to create the ‘excessive influence’ allegation. Santos, like all other elected officials, are obligated to stay in touch with their constituents. This is done most effectively by staying involved and connected to the local civic groups that represent his constituents. Alviso’s residents are not the only beneficiaries, it is all those who own kayaks, boats, and enjoy the trails on the Alviso Slough wetlands. That increased human traffic will benefit all the restaurants in Alviso. Many Alviso blue collar residents still have to have several jobs to make ends meet in this recession economy.Δ

Demostrarles amor incondicional- rechazar la conducta inapropiada, pero siempre aceptar quiénes son 5. Ofrecerles seguridad a través de estructura, rutina, reglas, y expectativas consistentes 6. Sentar límites y aplicar consecuencias razonables cuando los violan, corrigiéndoles sensitivamente 7. Aceptar el fracaso como parte natural de la exploración y el aprendizaje- permitirles que cometan errores y aprendan de la experiencia 8. Dar a los niños responsabilidades, según su madurez y capacidades 9. Evitar presionar a los niños con expectativas no razonables basadas en nuestras aspiraciones

Why it’s important to become a Citizen? By Cinthia Rodriguez - El Observador “I feel proud of becoming a citizen and to have the chance to be one of the Latino voters that takes part in all electoral process. I will be able to vote and thanks to this vote we can have laws that are fair to all working people that are part of this country,” said Rosario Vital, Editor of El Observador. Our editor stepped on American soil during the year of 2001 and confessed the first years were very difficult, but never impossible to achieve her goals. Like any other working immigrant, she was missing her home country and regretted her absence from the life of her only son, Carlos, 15. “They were years of sacrifice and pain but also of much learning. We all have so much to share and I’m not a stranger to the pain caused by missing your parents and being so far away from family members,” said Vital. Vital became a naturalized citizen on Wednesday, June 23 with 362 others from 50 different countries. Congratulations!

AN JOSE, CA- The Tobacco Free Coalition of Santa Clara County and Community Advocate Teens of Today, with the Santa Clara County Public Health Department, have the final results of the 2009 - 2010 Community's Health on Tobacco Report Card. Now in its fourth release, the Report Card is a tool to both monitor SCC cities' tobacco control policies and encourage enforcement efforts. Despite facing another year of budget reductions and limited resources, cities in our community have made great strides in prioritizing tobacco prevention efforts. This year three cities earned top marks. Mountain View, Saratoga and Milpitas have all received "A" grades, and last year no cities achieved an "A". Santa Clara County has focused its grading criteria on tobacco advertising and displays, as well as preventing youth access to tobacco. Points are awarded for a high compliance rate with window advertising regulations, enforcement of underage tobacco sales laws and creation of policies requiring a tobacco retailer license. Extra credit is given to recognize cities' community-based tobacco control work, an important part of promoting lasting solutions. "We don't want young people to begin smoking. By working with the cities we can strengthen tobacco policies, support enforcement of current laws and prevent access to tobacco," commented Dr. Martin Fenstersheib, Santa Clara County Health Officer. "These actions impact and discourage the use of tobacco. We know that about 10% of our young people currently use tobacco, and that some obtain tobacco illegally from tobacco retailers. Stopping the use of tobacco is important in protecting the health of our community." Currently, no Santa Clara County jurisdiction has adopted a tobacco retail licensing policy. In San Jose, Councilmember Nora Campos proposed a Tobacco Retailer Permit Program and Mayor Chuck Reed included it in his June budget message. Supervisor Yeager has also made tobacco retail licensing a priority for Santa Clara County. The City of Saratoga adopted a conditional use permit policy in response to the Tobacco Report Card, restricting the location of tobacco outlets in proximity to schools and parks, and other tobacco outlets. Mountain View, a city with consistently high Tobacco Report Card marks primarily due to strong tobacco-related policies and a best-practice tobacco retailer responsibility program, conducted decoy operations this year with nearly every tobacco retailer in the city. Youth coalition members who have participated in decoy operations with other City Police Departments have seen first-hand how likely stores are to sell tobacco to minors when they aren't being regularly checked.

an José, CA,- Healthy Silicon Valley (HSV) in collaboration with Center for Employment Training (CET), and Santa Clara County Public Health Department present a Community Forum "Town Hall Meeting" on "The Health Profile of Latinos in Santa Clara County". The event will be hosted at CET (701 Vine Street, San José, CA 95110) on June 30th from 10:30 am - 12 pm as a way to begin the dialogue between Public Health Department and the Community of CET in regards of the rapid increase of obesity in Latinos, its consequences, and to explore ways to instigate environmental changes through policy. Santa Clara County has a total population of 1.8 million people of which 26% are Hispanic/Latinos according to the 2008 Census. According to the statistics, the proportion of obesity among young and adult Latinos is considerably higher in comparison with the other ethnic groups. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) reports that "nearly half of Latino children are likely to develop diabetes," with girls at a 53% lifetime risk and boys at 45% lifetime risk. In youth, the adverse effects of obesity include poor self-esteem, anxiety, eating disorders, social isolation, and lower educational attainment. Some of the collateral consequences of obesity include: heart attack, stroke, Alzheimer's disease, chronic respiratory disease, diabetes, and suicide, among others. The

lack of health insurance, lack of access to healthy foods, levels of assimilation, and lack of prevention education, is contributing to the rapid increase of obesity health-related problems in the Latino population in Santa Clara County. The staggering statistics put us in the forefront of the advocacy battle for the development of systematic environmental changes to address this problem. HSV and its collaborative partners are coming together to create a dialogue with the CET community to explore and discuss possible strategies for change. Rocio Luna, MPH, Division Director of Santa Clara County Public Health Department, and Karina Alvarez, outpatient Clinical Dietitian for the Santa Clara County Pediatric Healthy Lifestyle Center (PHLC), will present important data and facts that will serve as a starting point to instigate a public forum with community, advocates and public health experts involved. The Community Forum on "The Health Profile of Latinos in Santa Clara County," on June 30th, 2010 at CET in San José, is the first of a series of four that HSV will be organizing. This is part of an advocacy effort with collaborative partners to move the conversation about the impact of obesity in at-risk groups, to actions that are supported by policy changes. Latinoamérica hace fuerza en el Mundial 2010

éxico, Uruguay, Argentina, Chile, Paraguay y Brasil se convirtieron en los embajadores de este Mundial 2010. De éste grupo tenemos a Argentina, Brasil y Uruguay con posibilidades de pasar todos obstáculos. Lo cierto es que la presencia de estos países y sobre todo el dominio de ellos en los primeros lugares ha dado una buena imagen al toque futbolístico de Latinoamerica.

Francia, Italia, Alemania, Inglaterra han sorprendido por su pobre participación y los países africanos como Ghana, Camerún, Nigeria y el propio Sudáfrica, anfitrión del mundial no brillaron en los primeros partidos. Cuidado con Portugal y España porque prometen dar la sorpresa del mundial. Después del 29 de junio sabremos quienes pasan a cuartos de final y esperamos que Latinamérica siga adelante y con fuerza. Δ
