n los próximos días, nuestra comunidad inmigrante tendrá una de las más grandes oportunidades de poner nombre y apellido a la necesidad de reformar la ley de inmigración. La lucha de una comunidad que vive en las sombras, que vive con miedo, pero que en años ha sido capaz de demostrar su capacidad organizativa con el grito de SI SE PUEDE, ha quedado demostrada como ya está escrito en la Historia: En el 2006 las demostraciones masivas en todo el país, donde San José, se dio a conocer al mundo, no solamente como el Valle del Silicio sino como un lugar donde se sufre y lucha por el reconocimiento de sus habitantes, donde nos hicimos solidarios unos a otros sin importar, edad, sexo o situación migratoria. Salimos de las sombras, tomando las calles y levantando la voz! En el 2008 el voto Latino marco la diferencia e hizo que la balanza le diera la oportunidad a un candidato de raíces inmigrantes, volcándonos a los urnas desde muy tempranas horas. Esto ha demostrado que la comunidad Latina, no tiene miedo y que ya no se merece vivir en las sombras y que demanda un:" SI SE PUEDE" un "Honren nuestras contribuciones". El Censo 2010 que fue creado hace muchos años (el Primer Censo fue en 1790) y por Ley TODOS debemos ser contados (Articulo 1), este fue creado por esta nación para saber cuantas personas viven en este país y así asegurar la distribución de fondos federales, para que los estados reciban apoyos monetarios que se ven reflejados en la construcción de escuelas, carreteras, empleos, servicios de salud, en otras palabras asegurar el desarrollo y bienestar de todos sus habitantes en una forma equitativa y justa. Para los Latinos es importante y no podemos darnos el lujo de desaprovechar la oportunidad que se nos presenta como parte de dar un paso firme de demostración de fuerza política y participación cívica y por supuesto de seguir siendo parte de la historia de este país
por dos razones: 1. El Censo 2010 nos da la oportunidad de ponerle nombre y apellido a la necesidad más grande que tiene la comunidad inmigrante que contribuye y fortalece a la riqueza de este país. Tenemos que contarnos todos, niños mayores, empleados, desempleados, todos los que habitan en nuestros hogares, entendiéndose como hogar: la casa, un cuarto, una sala, estudio, diván, no importa con cuantos compartamos nuestros hogares, debemos ser solidarios y contarnos todos. 2. Está en nuestras manos asegurar que el gobierno federal reparta de una forma equitativa los fondos que lleguen a los diferentes estados de mayor concentración de latinos, para seguir apoyando la creación de escuelas, empleos, servicios de salud, seguridad publica que en resumidas cuentas significa el asegurar el progreso de nuestros niños que son el futuro de América. A veces escuchamos o nuestra comunidad se queja que no nos toman en cuenta, que no sirven tantas marchas, que no tenemos voz y nada va a cambiar. El cambio se ha dado y se sigue dando, pero la tarea es de todos. Próximamente, llegara un cuestionario a nuestras casas, les invito a que los abramos sin miedo y en familia, completémoslo contando a todos los que habitan en nuestro espacio, desde el mas grande hasta el mas pequeño, sin olvidar a los que por solidaridad o por necesidad estamos rentándoles o compartiendo un cuarto, azotea o garaje. Acordémonos que los Latinos también hemos demostrado y enseñado al mundo lo que significa la palabra solidaridad, seamos solidarios para nosotros mismos, para nuestra familia y para nuestra comunidad, no olvidemos que sino nos contamos en esta oportunidad, sufriremos las consecuencias por los próximos 10 años. El Censo esta en nuestras manos. Hagamos valida aquella consigna que tanto oímos en las marchas: "No somos uno, No somos cien, Somos un muchos, cuéntanos bien", Hagamos la tarea solidaria y fortalezcamos nuestra fuerza política.

in duda algo tienen que estar haciendo bien las organizaciones pro inmigrantes con toda su variedad de matices y puntos de vista para haber logrado colocar nuevamente en la palestra de Washington el tema de la reforma migratoria integral. Desde diferentes frentes, quienes abogan por cambiar el actual sistema migratorio anquilosado, ruin y falaz, han obligado a que el presidente Barack Obama rememore los tiempos en que él acompañó el "sí se puede" gritado por los hispanos de todos los rincones del país. Este efecto también ha calado en el Capitolio, donde el senador demócrata por Nueva York, Charles Schumer, ha estado en los últimos días revisando el borrador de proyecto migratorio que había quedado en estado de reposo desde el año pasado. Por su parte, el senador republicano de Carolina del Sur, Lindsey Graham, ha dado señales de interés en meterle mano al asunto migratorio para mover una propuesta bipartidista. No obstante, la súbita suspensión del encuentro de Obama con Schumer y Graham, previsto para la tarde del pasado lunes 8 de marzo, deja un mal sabor entre los latinos del país, quienes esperaban que la reunión no fuera simplemente una demostración de buenas intenciones sino un paso real hacia la discusión de la reforma. Algunos medios en español habían interpretado la reunión como un paliativo para calmar los ánimos de irritación de los latinos antes de la marcha del domingo 21 de marzo en la zona de monumentos de la capital. Independientemente de las razones para la posposición, las organizaciones pro inmigrantes no deben quitar el pie del acelerador, que es lo que ha dado resultado en los días recientes. Los políticos deben entender que lo que está en juego es su relación con un electorado que cada vez es más poderoso e influyente y que no olvidará nunca si de nuevo es objeto de burla. La disyuntiva de la clase política de Washington está en tomar partido por el sector retardatario de los amotinados del té con su cantaleta anti inmigrante o apuntarle al voto latino, que será consecuente con el trato que le den a la comunidad hispana. El anuncio de la realización de la manifestación y sus efectos políticos en Washington ya originó una reacción de los anti inmigrantes. La organización nativista Federación Americana para la Reforma Migratoria (FAIR) emitió un comunicado en el que se mofa de las organizaciones "etnocentristas" y afirma que "tal como se ha reportado ", el jefe de personal de la Casa Blanca puede desdeñar privadamente la promesa del presidente del "si se puede" a favor de un enfoque más pragmático de "no te atrevas". Otro de los tentáculos del movimiento anti inmigrante, NumbersUSA, propone a sus correligionarios realizar actividades del 19 al 22 de marzo, para contrarrestar la marcha. La campaña "Parar la Amnistía en Cuatro Días" pretende efectuar acciones en los 435 distritos congresionales del país, una meta incierta de lograr. No tengo duda que los acontecimientos recientes han conmocionado a los nativistas y sería ideal hacerles pasar el mal rato de una eventual aprobación de una reforma migratoria amplia. Por eso se tiene que salir otra vez a la calle y colmar de banderas estadounidenses y camisetas blancas el National Mall de la capital del país. t a national level, President Obama is stumping for Congress to pass a Comprehensive Health Care Reform bill by March 18, 2010. If no reform now, when? These same questions are facing the Board of Supervisors and the County Executive, Dr. Jeff Smith, who began reorganizing efforts by assuming control of the Alcohol and Drug Programs. Recently two SCVMC top management officials left and the sudden termination of a chaplaincy contract with the Catholic Diocese of San Jose surfaced. The local community, especially its Hispanic component, needs to become very concerned about what is being planned for the future of SCVMC. The easiest thing to resolve is the chaplaincy issue. In keeping with the separation of church and state, a coordinating office of religious affairs needs to be established which coordinates faith services between patients, their families, and medical care professionals. No recognized religion can be excluded such services. The more difficult issue is how to retain an effective medical care system that has served the residents of the County of Santa Clara for many years. SCVMC began as a tuberculosis treatment center; evolved into a 'county hospital' followed by being a 'community hospital, and then was transformed into one of the best medical tertiary care systems in the nation operated by a county jurisdiction. The most important part of SCVMC is not very visible to those who focus on the central medical facilities located at Bascom Avenue and Moorpark Street. The Health and Hospital System operates a number of community clinics which provide local access by residents; providing excellent general medical care in their local community. These local clinics are very effective in providing the primary medical care that a community requires. Diseases that require more differential diagnostic knowledge and the use of high tech medical technology (Cat-scans; MRIs, radiology and clinical chemistry testing, etc.) are provided those services at the centrally located SCVMC. Here the patient is often provided the same differential diagnostic expertise now available at Stanford Medical Center simply because many Stanford Medical School training programs are at SCVMC. Simply stated, SCVMC is a teaching hospital where many medical technology, nursing and medical students obtain their practical training and experiences. It is very superficial to just think about this medical care system as a 'hospital'. What has to be taken into account is the reality that with increasing medical knowl-

edge and its applied technology, the ability of health care professionals to effectively treat patients while keeping them ambulatory has increased significantly. Therefore, it is essential that the plans for SCVMC, as well the medical facility in downtown San Jose, be permitted to develop and be implemented while dealing with the budgetary issues of the Health and Hospital Systems which incorporate mental health care. While the major focus today may be balancing the budget of the County of Santa Clara, which is projected at $250 million, it would be wise to be very careful about major changes in a health care system, which works so effectively that every resident is seen at least once every four years. What is possible immediately is the necessary search for waste caused by the inefficiencies present, some of which are a direct result of ineffective and inefficient personnel management practices, which protect certain union employees by slowing down performance review procedures. A variety of agreements with suppliers and medical professional groups need to be included in a performance effectiveness evaluation and assessment. This Health and Hospital System, County of Santa Clara, does need to change in ways that permit the local county community to continue to directly support it. In closing, let the major changes be subject to review by interested members of the public. The Hispanic community, which is the largest ethnic group that has depended on this facility for decades, must find a way to be involved, supportive, engaged, and become a full fledged stakeholder actively monitoring what is being planned by others who have their own agenda and goals. A very important issue is to have continued access to health care. The community must insist that the 'open door policy' at SCVMC's Emergency Room be continued. It is the only ER operation with an open door policy in the entire San Francisco Bay Area. It is very important that local residents tell their elected officials, especially those in Congress, that any new Comprehensive Health Care Policy must fairly compensate SCVMC on a performance basis. The Health and Hospital Systems, County of Santa Clara earns and deserves the support needed while making changes to remain contemporary and current to permit delivery of a mosaic of health care services to this community.Δ

Hay dinero sin reclamar

eembolsos sin reclamar sumando más de $1.3 mil millones están a la espera de casi 1.4 millones de personas que no presentaron una declaración federal de impuestos para el 2006, dijo el Servicio de Impuestos Internos (IRS). Sin embargo, para reclamar su dinero, debe presentarse al IRS una declaración del 2006 a más tardar el jueves, 15 de abril del 2010. El IRS calcula que el promedio de reembolso de impuestos sin reclamar para el año 2006 es de $604. Algunas personas pudieran no haber declarado debido a que sus ingresos fueron muy bajos para estar requeridos de presentar una declaración de impuestos a pesar de que tuvieron impuestos retenidos de sus salarios o hicieron pagos estimados trimestrales. En los casos en que una declaración no fue presentada, la ley otorga a la mayorÌa de los contribuyentes una ventana de oportunidad de tres años para reclamar un reembolso. Si no se presenta una declaración para reclamar un reembolso dentro del plazo de tres años, el dinero pasa a ser propiedad del Tesoro de los EE.UU. Para las declaraciones del 2006, la ventana se cierra el 15 de abril del 2010. La ley requiere que la declaración tenga la dirección correcta, sea enviada por correo y tenga un sello postal para esa fecha. No hay penalidad por la presentación de una declaración tardía que califique para un reembolso. Aunque las declaraciones de im-
puestos de años anteriores no pueden ser presentadas electrónicamente, los contribuyentes aún pueden apresurar sus reembolsos eligiendo tenerlos depositados directamente a una cuenta de cheques o de ahorros. El IRS recuerda a los contribuyentes que buscan un reembolso del 2006 que sus cheques serán retenidos si no han presentado sus declaraciones de impuestos del 2007 ó 2008. he Azteca Mexica people and the larger Native Community will be conducting its annual Ceremony for the Yancuic Xihuitl - The Azteca Mexica New Year on March 13, 2010 and the celebrations will go on until Sunday from 10am to 5pm. The new year begins March 12 at sunrise or about 6am according to the Ancient Aztec Solar Calendar of 365.25 days at the National Hispanic University in San Jose. This will be the Year Matlactli Ihuan Ce Tochtli (11 Rabbit), a year of abundant fertility, of working for those things which bring pleasure and harmony into our lives. This extends out to our community and world beyond. It is
a good year to start or add to your family; to develop and put to good use your skills and abilities, to improve your home and community environment; to strive for understanding and harmonious relations. The number 11 signifies rest, pleasure and leisure. The entire community is welcome to join in celebration of the New Year with a full weekend of Native Dancers representing the Ohlone, Zuni, Zapoteca, Northern & Southern Traditional and the hosting Azteca Mexica peoples. Extension of Deadline for Grand Jury Applications El Observador he Honorable Jamie Jacobs-May, Presiding Judge of the Superior Court of California, County of Santa Clara, has announced that the filing deadline for Grand Jury applications has been extended to Friday, March 19, 2010.

Residents, who have lived in Santa Clara County for one year, are United States citizens and 18 years of age or older, may apply to serve. The oneyear term will begin on June 24, 2010. The Civil Grand Jury is part of the judicial branch of government and serves as the county’s investigatory body. It carries out its civil watchdog responsibilities by exercising its authority to examine all aspects of county and city gov-
ernment and special districts, including school districts. The Grand Jury also has the authority to inspect the adult and juvenile detention facilities in the county. Grand jury service requires a significant commitment of time. During the one-year term (June 24, 2010 through June 23, 2011) grand jurors will be expected to commit to 20-25 hours per week, and frequently more. The Grand Jury contributes to-
wards the efficiency and integrity of local government and affords citizens a unique volunteer opportunity and a great learning experience. Coto Vows to Protect Public Education By Osvaldo Castillo - El Observador

alifornia is facing a budget crisis and the state is looking to cut back on various programs in order to solve this problem. Some of these programs are in public education. As of this year, students in the East Side Union High School District (ESUHD) have lost access to librarians and are only allowed to be in their school library for an hour. On Thursday, March 4 students and staff of the ESUHD gathered at the Independence High School gymnasium to protest the budget cuts to education. They were joined by Assemblymember Joe Coto (D-San Jose) and members of the ESUHD Board of Trusties. "This is a crisis that affects all of us and we need to start coming up with real solutions," said Melissa Hanson, president of the East Side Teachers Association. "Our students need to spend more than an hour in their library if they are to succeed in school." "We need to tell people from every part of the state that they cannot take from our community," added Eddie Garcia, president of the ESUHSD Board of Trustees. "The schools in our district have helped many people succeed in
life. I would not be here if it were not for the education that I received at James Lick High School." Joe Coto encouraged the students to keep fighting for a better education and that they were not alone in this fight." "When I left Sacramento, there was a rally of at least 7,000 students and staff shouting 'No more cuts to education!' " Coto said. " So we are definitely not alone in this fight." He spoke about his bill (AB 2090), which he said would help balance the budget and provide funding for public education in California. "It is time to eliminate tax loopholes that favor corporations. These loopholes prevent us from getting the money we need," Coto said. Coto suggested enacting an oil severance tax in order to balance the budget. "California is the only state that does not tax companies that drill for oil. It is time for these oil companies to stop getting a free ride," Coto said. "If these oil companies were taxed, California would receive $1.2 billion and that money can be used to fund education. ocial networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Myspace have made it easier for individuals to communicate, express themselves and keep in touch with
friends. Facebook allows it users to create fan pages that are dedicated to a specific person, place, idea or topic. But with fan pages titles such as Soccer is Better that Football, Saying the Word Hella and Texting in Awkward Situations, it is clear that the majority of these fan pages are for entertainment purposes only. Arturo Fass created his own fan page on Facebook. However, he did not create the page for jokes and giggles. He created the page to promote the area he grew up in, East San Jose. "I started the page to try to get parents and kids active and aware about positive events and organizations," Fass said. "I wanted people to be aware of helpful phone numbers, and to inform families of city and statewide activity that may affect our community. I wanted to use Facebook as way to bring our community together." The page gained 70 fans within four days and Fass says he hopes the page reaches 10,000 fans. "I ask the fans to participate and share events or programs that can benefit our youth and community," Fass said. "I hope that the members become active in the neighborhood associations and
at all of our different school board meetings. I see the page as an online forum to voice concerns, share experiences, and generate ideas to share with the rest of the Facebook crowd. Through the power of networking I feel we can accomplish transparency and generate positive action." Fass has lived in East San Jose for 33 years and attended Overfelt High School. He is a custodian for East Side Union High School District, local union 187 member, and runs a small sole proprietorship landscape business. He is also J. Manuel Herrera's campaign manager, in his run for City Council (District 5). "Working with him has enabled me to meet people from all walks of life, from stay at home moms to city officials," Fass said "I became aware of programs run by the city and non profit organizations that invest in educating parents and kids." Fass said he plans to continue working with the community even after this year's council election. "I'll continue to be a community activist, organizer and continue helping shape our youth so they can become strong leaders," Fass said. Andrew Hill, James Lick, Gunderson, Overfelt, San Jose High Academy, Yerba Buena, and Willow Glen high schools are eligible for scholarship funds provided by the College Access Foundation in collaboration with the Silicon Valley Community Foundation. The Silicon Valley College Success Scholarship Fund provides needbased scholarships for college-bound, seniors at Andrew Hill, James Lick, Gunderson, Overfelt, San Jose High Academy, Yerba Buena, and Willow Glen high schools. Students seeking to attend community college or a fouryear college or university can submit their scholarship application by the April 16, 2010 deadline and qualify for an award ranging from $1,000 to $6,000. "The Educational Partnership Center provides a variety of support for students in these schools, but many need financial support in addition to advising, tutoring and other services to get to college," said Felicia Nance, Assistant Director, San Jose Cal-SOAP, and Educational Partnership Center (EPC). "Después de la inspección se ahorra como $180 dólares al año y en términos de energía se reduce a 2 mil libras las emisiones carbónicas contribuyendo a la mejora de un mejor ambiente limpio y sano", explicó Sarmiento.

Hermelinda Sapien Chosen as 23rd Assembly District's Woman of the Year
O
n March 8, 2010, Assemblymember Joe Coto and the California State Assembly honored Hermelinda Sapien as the 23rd Assembly District "Woman of the Year." The California State Assembly's "Woman of the Year" program honors eighty dynamic women who work to make their communities better places to live. They are chosen by the Assemblymembers of each of California's eighty Assembly districts and recognized during a ceremony in the Assembly Chambers. "Hermelinda has dedicated her life to being a champion of the disadvantaged and unemployed. The outstanding job training programs she has helped to develop and provide have allowed thousands of people over the years to transition back into the job market and improve the quality of their lives. This recognition is just a small token of appreciation for her contributions to the residents of the 23rd district." Throughout the 80s and 90s, Ms. Sapien's experience and knowledge of workforce development and her civic involvement enabled the Center of Employment and Training (CET) to grow from a single center into a national net-
work of independent and affiliated programs. She was appointed in 1999 as executive director of CET and has worked to bring local, state and federal resources to the students of CET nationwide. Under her continued guidance, CET continues to be one of the premier employment training programs. Recent awards bestowed on CET include: U.S. Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration's 2009 Excellence in Economic Development Award, MACSA's 2008 "Most Influential Latino National Organizations", U.S. Department of Labor's 2004 "Top Workforce Innovations", PepNet's 2003 "Promising and Effective Practices in Youth Initiatives", among many others. In addition to her many achievements at CET, Ms. Sapien is heavily involved in her community, she serves on numerous boards and commissions. esar Chavez is a hero to many people of different backgrounds throughout San Jose and throughout the world. In March 2009, the San Jose, the City Council designated a route through Downtown and East San Jose as Cesar Chavez Memorial Walkway. With funding from the Mayor's office, walkway signs will be installed at seven landmark locations along the route. On Wednesday, March 10, San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed was joined by members of the San Jose City Council and Rudy Chavez Medina (the Chavez family representative) to unveil the signs to the public. "This is a collaborate effort with the City Council and the community to honor Cesar Chavez and his importance to our community," Reed said. "It is fitting that the unveiling of these signs be made here at the Mexican Heritage Plaza, which was the site of the old Safeway where Cesar first began his community actions." The seven sites were the signs will be located are the Plaza de Cesar Chavez, the Cesar Chavez Arch of Dignity, Equality, and Justice, the Mexican Heritage Plaza, Cesar Chavez Elementary School, the Mayfair Community Cen-
ter. Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, and the site of Cesar Chavez's former home. "These are all fitting sites to have these signs," said District 5 Councilmember Nora Campos. "For example, the Mayfair Community is were Cesar had many of his roots. His brother also still lives in the house that Cesar lived in when he was in San Jose. Campos went on to say that Chavez became a great leader naturally. He saw the wrong and injustice in his community and dedicated his life to correcting it. Sam Liccardo, Councilmember for District 3, said he was honored to have the signs place throughout downtown San Jose. "Cesar's journey began in East San Jose, but it took him everywhere there was injustice," Liccardo said. "He has taught us that it is important to work for justice wherever we are." The Mayor, City Council and all those involved hope the signs will remind and inspire the youth in San Jose about Cesar and his life's work. "We need to reach kids in our communities and teach them about Cesar's ideas about peace, justice and education. " Mayor Reed said. "Our kids will be much better off today if they know about Cesar and his work. The signs will be put up throughout the seven designated area over the next two weeks, just in time for this month's Cesar Chavez Day.

Protesta para el 21 de Marzo Por Rosario Vital - El Observador "¿Y la promesa de la reforma?" se pregunta Diana Gonzáles residente de Oakland quien recientemente ha sufrido la separación de un hermano por su orden de deportación que tenía pendiente. Así como ella hay miles de personas preocupados, desepcionados por la administración del Presidente Barack Obama. Las deportaciones y separaciones de familia no han cesado aún en el gobierno del Presidente Barack Obama. De acuerdo a un reporte del Movimiento por una Reforma Migratoria Justa (FIRM) la administración Obama ha superado a su predecesor George W. Bush en el número de deportaciones. En el primer año de la administración Obama, el Servicio de Inmigración y Aduanas (ICE) deportó a 387 mil 790 inmigrantes, un incremento del 61.8 por ciento con respecto al promedio de 240 mil deportados anuales bajo el segundo periodo del gobierno de Bush, indicaron. Hay un promedio de mil deportados diarios con el gobierno de Obama, en comparación con los 650 inmigrantes deportados diariamente durante el segundo mandato de Bush, de acuerdo con el informe. A
finding by Movimiento por una Reforma Migratoria Justa (Movement for a Just Immigration Reform) shows that President Barack Obama has beaten his predecessor George W. Bush in the number of deportations, in an article provided by Mexican news resource, Notimex. In the first year of the Obama administration, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) deported 387,790 immigrants, an increment from 61.8 percent compared to the 240,000 immigrants deported annually during Bush's second term. There are thousands of immigrants being deported daily versus the average of 650 deported on a daily basis during the Bush administration. During the historic win for Obama in 2008, many people were hoping that he keeps his promises of getting rid of the raids and to begin the immigration reform during his first year, explained Angelica Salas, Director, Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles (CHIRLA). "Mr. President, we are taking the March for America to your patio on March 21," said in reference to the thousands of people getting ready for immigration reform. "Every deportation destroys a family," said Salas. Salas asked Obama to "apply his leadership to bipartisan legislation," before that date to be included in the Congressional calendar. Adolescent Beatriz Vasquez, 15, was born in the United States to Salvadorian parents and lives in fear since ICE arrested her mother. Her mother is undocumented and is in the process of being deported. "I'm scared that I'm not going to see her
again," said Vasquez. "I've become traumatized, I have nightmares." She is asking her President to keep his word in keeping families together. March 21st Community leaders and organizations representing labor, faith groups, students, business and diverse communities from across the County of Santa Clara announced a massive mobilization on March 21 in solidarity with the national March FOR America action in Washington D.C. Both actions demand Congress to fix our nation's broken immigration system. Locally Richard Hobbs, Associate Director of SIREN, urged immigrants to be brave and bold and take action. "Immigration reform is only for two kinds of people: those who have the courage to take risks and those who are willing to fight for human rights. There is no group of people who have taken more risks, because they got to the United States in the first place, or who fight more for human rights--because they do so in their daily struggle of existence--than immigrants. It is time for immigrants to stand up and demonstrate their personal courage." "We have a last opportunity to act, to push for and achieve immigration reform now to save the millions of families from the horrors of forced separations, detentions, and deportations. If we do not take the concrete steps necessary, our communities will suffer the consequences of deportations, desolation and despair. Immigration reform could help a robust recovery of our economy. Fixing the broken immigration system is a fundamental link to fixing our economy. E
l día 17 de marzo se celebra en el mundo católico, el día de San Patricio, fiesta de origen irlandés que honra al Santo, quien fuera el misionero que evangelizo y llevó el Cristianismo a la Isla en el siglo 400 DC. Durante la semana que se conmemora a San Patricio, los creyentes suelen vestir prendas de color verde, ya que él ha sido por decreto popular, declarado como el Santo patrono de la prosperidad. Fieles de muchas partes del mundo, aseguran haber sido receptores de grandes milagros, cuando han acudido con fe al patrocinio de San Patricio. La primera vez que se celebró en el continente Americano la conmemoración en honor a San Patricio, fue en 1773 en Boston, Massachussets. San Patricio cuyo nombre real era "Maewyn Succat", fue secuestrado a la edad de 16 años por unos corsarios, quienes lo vendieron como esclavo. Durante sus seis años de cautiverio, él encontró su fortaleza para seguir adelante en la fe religiosa. Después que escapó, San Patricio estudió religión en Europa occidental y viajó a Irlanda para llevar la palabra de Cristo a la isla. Él se acostumbró a usar el trébol de tres hojas, como una metáfora para explicar el concepto de la Trinidad (padre, hijo y espíritu santo.) En tiempos modernos, el trébol también se usa como símbolo de prosperidad y anuncio de tiempos mejores. Una antigua leyenda, relata que San Patricio, condujo a todas las serpientes fuera de Irlanda, llevándolas hasta el mar en donde perecieron ahogadas. La serpiente era un símbolo pagano venerado en Irlanda, hasta que el cristianismo surgió en el año 444 de nuestra era. La devoción a los santos, no tiene idiomas ni fronteras, del mismo modo que nuestros santos son
venerados en otros continentes: San Luis Beltrán, San Martín de Porres, y Santa Rosa de Lima, por mencionar algunos. De la misma manera, los santos de otras partes del mundo también son acogidos con fe y devoción por los fieles creyentes. Ritual para pedir prosperidad a San Patricio El día Jueves 17, inicie el día dándose un enjuague con agua de hierba buena, utilice al vestir una prenda color verde oscuro, encienda tres velas verdes en honor al Santo y si le es posible, ofréndele incienso de sándalo. Trate de hacer una obra de caridad en este día. Y durante la noche, antes de irse a dormir, récele con fe la oración en honor a San Patricio y hágale tres peticiones. Si lo hace con fe, los favores le serán otorgados antes del 15 de abril Oración a San Patricio Nobilísimo San Patricio, santo fuerte y valiente, patrón excelso de la prosperidad. Tú que eres el sabio por excelencia, te ruego que ilumines nuestro camino hacia la sabiduría, justicia y abundancia. También te pido que protejas mis afectos y valores, así como guardaste fielmente los mandamientos dictados por Dios a Moisés. Sea tu divina protección, nuestro sagrado refugio, hoy, mañana y siempre. Let the Eagle Fly or What's for Lent? By Rosana Madrigal de Beattie

f you are still wondering what to do for Lent, here is my suggestion. Find out who are the poor who Jesus talks about in the Gospels. For inspiration or motivation, checkout “Let the Eagle Fly,” a musical on the life of Cesar Chavez. While you may think you cannot do what civil rights leader did for the farmworkers. Perhaps. But remember, with God everything is possible! I did not know what to expect from a musical on the labor organizer. Let the Eagle Fly is sometimes funny or it's better to laugh then to cry or get angry. Depending on your history with the labor union, you may come out singing a line or two. It features the labor union's traditional spiritual song of De Colores. It is easy to follow because it is roughly docu-drama of Cesar Chavez' life. The husband-wife team of Cesar and Elena moved me. Especially, how much Elena fought to keep the marriage together and how she followed and trusted her husband. I was inspired by Cesar giving-up a good job and the small comforts of the "Sal Si Puedes" San Jose neighborhood to go back to the fields to organize the farm-workers. I know in my heart, I could not do what Cesar did. But, I
am still waiting for my next calling. Despite knowing Cesar Chavez' story, I was still amazed by the Grape Boycott. I remembered walking the picked-line in front of Safeway, the company for which my dad worked. After all these years, I am still feeling, "WOW!" I was very touched by the farmworkers’ faith to picket with just a $70 stipend. God will provide. Two years later, the fund still had not run out. That is faith and commitment! Please, take a young person or anyone who has no idea who Cesar Chavez is. I use the present tense because his spirit is still with us. Many are still working on the problems facing farm-workers and their families, such as, immigration reform, health care access and better working conditions. Let the Eagle Fly could touch, move and inspire you to do something this Lent. Maybe that something is right in front of you! “Let the Eagle Fly” runs through March 31st at the San Jose City College Theatre (2100 Moorpark, along I-280 at I-880). Give yourself at least 40 minutes to get there because it is difficult, but not impossible to find parking and the theatre. Tickets are reduced to $20 on Community Night, Thursday, March 25th. A Colorful Mission

inequest had a clear theme this year: mavericks in the film industry. A maverick is an unbranded calf or a person who refuses to conform to a particular group. Actor Benjamin Bratt was recognized as such and was the Maverick spirit award recipient for Cinequest 20. Before Bratt was presented his award, "La Mission," his latest film, was screened. Everything came together as to why he was this year's theme recipient. The film was shot on location in San Francisco's predominately Latino neighborhood, where his character faced his greatest mission. Without giving away too much, Bratt's role is that of a stereotypical Mexican father discovering his son's true identity. I mention stereotypical because like many Mexican families, homosexuality is not tolerated or hardly ever talked about. The true mission for Bratt is to realize who he is and how he wants to be, as a parent, lover, and bus driver. The film's message is very powerful and can affect the lives of many Latino families. It explores a very realistic situation
and can create the opportunity many young adults look for in coming out. This film is right for its time and the location makes it easier to understand. Soon after the film Bratt was on stage holding his new award. In an appropriate interview with San Francisco's First Lady Jennifer Siebel Newsom, Bratt talked about how he got into acting, family, and life in general. There was talk about being a teacher and how he sort of fell into acting by accident. Although his paternal grandfather had been a Broadway performer, he never saw himself in the arts. With parents of strong work ethic, Bratt explained that he wanted to be a teacher. He talked about auditioning for a show, it was never aired but he was paid for it anyway. It helped him pay some loans and was soon on his way to becoming a full time actor. There is a true love for what he does, but he also loves being a husband and a father. Bratt has realized how much joy comes with being a father and in his latest film, that realization hits the viewers. The film will be in theaters by early April.
