AKLAND, CA.- The federal government, in its infinite wisdom, has tried to define for us what being hungry means. They've come up with a yardstick, called "food insecurity." It means people who have less food than they want and need. It includes people who actually go hungry, but also those who've had to reduce the amount they eat, skip meals, or eat food they know isn't good for them, because they can't afford what it really takes to eat. Late last fall the U.S. Department of Agriculture shocked even those people who are used to thinking about the problems of hunger, when it released a report that counted the number of hungry families in this, the richest country in the world. It turns out we're not so rich after all, as anyone who's lost a job or a home in the Great Recession could easily tell you. Still, the numbers are like a sharp blow upside the head. Some 16 percent of all families were food insecure - they didn't have the money to buy enough food at some point during 2008, up from 12 percent the year before. That amounted to 49 million people, including more than 16 million children. That's almost a quarter of all the children in the United States, and 4 million more than it was in 2007. This year we know the number is higher - we just don't know how much higher - yet. About a third of those families simply didn't get enough food to eat. That's called, in USDA parlance, very low food security. That means these families went hungry. That included 12 million adults, and 5 million kids. The other two thirds of food insecure families only survived because they had access to federal food programs, or got food at a local food pantry or soup kitchen. That
means they were hungry too, but not quite as much. Hunger isn't really spread evenly, as is obvious when you think about it. More in Oakland. Less in Lafayette. More than a quarter of all black and Latino households were food insecure - compared to 16 percent in general. And more than 13 percent of all families made up of single moms and their children were not just food insecure, but outright hungry. Some 42.2 percent of food-insecure households had incomes below the official poverty line, which is $21,834 for a family of four in 2008. So more than half of all hungry families actually had incomes above the poverty line. That poverty line, that official yardstick, is so low that millions of families not officially "in poverty" still don't have enough money to buy the food they need. This was 2008, when the recession was just beginning. Last year, with unemployment in California reaching more than 12 percent, these numbers all went up. Again, we don't know yet by exactly how much, but we can be sure it's going to be a big jump. National numbers sometimes don't tell the local story, though. How many hungry people do we have where we actually live? Alameda County, with a population of 1.5 million, had probably a quarter of a million food insecure people in 2008. Contra Costa 160,000. Oakland 64,000. Berkeley and Richmond 16,000 each. Hayward over 22,000 and Alameda over 11,000. There were over 20,000 hungry children in Oakland alone. Do the math for your own neighborhood or city. These are the numbers. The real question is, in your neighborhood? On your street? In the house down your block, or next door? Or could we be talking about you?

rizona has become a lightening rod for people on both sides of the Mexican immigration debate. AB 1070 and efforts to curtail the Mexican American Studies programs in the state's universities have contributed to a firestorm of debate and controversy around the country. However, an indispensable piece of the discussion that can shed light on this difficult subject has been left out, and many of the essential questions in the debate have not even been asked. Why are there so many undocumented Mexican immigrants in the United States? Why are undocumented immigrants willing to risk dying a horrible death in the southern deserts to get into the country? The great surge in Mexican immigration began in earnest after the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) went into effect in 1994. The World Bank granted Mexico a Sectoral Adjustment Loan (SAL) so that Mexico could restructure its economy to facilitate the country's partnership with Canada and the U.S. in NAFTA. True to neoliberal economic ideology, a provision of the loan requires that Mexico curtail its social services to the poor and end price supports for small corn farmers. With the stroke of a NAFTA signatory pen, Mexico's small corn farmers could no longer sell a portion of their corn crop to the government for an economic return sufficient to support their families. In addition, Mexico's staple food stores supplied by the corn farmers and supporting the rural and urban poor became history. U.S. agricultural industries are great supporters of NAFTA. In the U.S. corn farmers are heavily subsidized by the government. Without these taxpayer supported subsidies, they would go out of business. U.S. corn farmers and exporters have always wanted to sell a portion of their huge, subsidized corn harvests to Mexico. However, prior to NAFTA, Mexico's tariffs on corn at the border both protected Mexico's small corn farmers and made the sale of U.S. corn in Mexico unprofitable. Because corn was deemed a "sensitive" crop by the NAFTA originators, corn tariffs were given a fifteen-year gradual phase-out period to allow small corn farmers to adjust to the NAFTA economy. Corn tariffs would gradually decrease from 1994 to 2009 ultimately resulting in "free," (no tariffs) trade. However, corn tariffs mysteri-

ously disappeared only 30 months into the NAFTA economy. Corn from the U.S. began flooding the Mexican markets, undercutting the government price that small corn farmers had long expected. Almost overnight, the return on corn for small corn farmers was cut in half. Hungry small corn farmers who understand nothing about NAFTA have few choices in the NAFTA economy; either stay in Mexico and starve with your family, migrate to a big city in search of work, or migrate to the U.S. The NAFTA Accords made no provision for the estimated 15 million corn farmers predicted to leave the land when NAFTA went into effect, since NAFTA's master minds considered the subject too controversial. However, Mexico's president Salinas de Gotari knew that millions would be forced off their land. Where did they expect them to go? As farmers flee the countryside as economic refugees of NAFTA and U.S. subsidized corn, much of it genetically modified floods the Mexican market, Mexico's 7000 year old traditional farming culture is disappearing. Additionally, NAFTA has facilitated the entrance of giant U.S. corporations into Mexico: Wal-Mart, Dow agribusiness, Monsanto agribusiness, Marlboro cigarettes, Coca-Cola, signaling the end of many small Mexican businesses and creating yet another wave of former shop owner immigrants to the U.S. Those farmers and small business people that have been forced to leave Mexico face formidable and treacherous obstacles; from the very real possibility of a deadly border crossing, to living with the psychological pain of family separation, to the ever-present possibility of deportation. Given NAFTA's enormous social cost to Mexico and the resultant horrific human rights abuses entailed along side the lucrative profits garnered by U.S. corporations, other salient questions in the immigration debate must be addressed: What is the United States' responsibility for the destruction of a 7000 year-old sustainable farming culture in Mexico and the resultant displacement of millions of small rural corn farmers? Rather than punitive walls, I.C.E. raids and further militarization, wouldn't a more cost effective and humane alternative be to work with Mexico's NAFTA economic refugees to create a new sustainable rural economy at home in Mexico?

an Jose City Councilmembers along with city leaders and advocates gathered to denounce the recent signing of the State of Arizona's immigration reform bill "Support Our Law Enforcement and Safe Neighborhoods Act," (SB 1070) last Friday, May 7, at the City Hall Plaza. "I'm proud to be part of a group of city council members today that are condemning this law because I think it's a very bad policy and it sends a very negative signal to Americans, immigrants, every one in our country," said Councilmember Rose Herrera. "We're a land of immigrants and that's what makes our country strong and I think this law is basically very unpatriotic and very un-American and I'm proud to stand up against it." Councilmember Herrera was present at the press conference with fellow councilmember Madison Nguyen, Sam Liccardo, Ash Karla, and Nora Campos. They discussed a memorandum urging the City of San Jose to avoid renewing contracts with companies headquartered in Arizona as well as urging the passage of a resolution denouncing Arizona SB 1070. "We couldn't possibly tolerate a law like Arizona passed because it would completely undermine our ability to work with our community, to enforce the local laws that protect us from violence, that ensure that our fire department can respond to emergencies, and all those critical city services," said Councilmember Sam Liccardo. The memorandum stated that SB 1070 is a tragically misguided attempt at reform that will
create a disconnect between law enforcement and the communities they serve, undermine fundamental civil rights protections and create a legislative precedent that may lead to a patchwork of inconsistent immigration policy across the country. "The issue is greater than Arizona. What we're saying as law enforcement is we understand that there is a huge need for immigration reform," said San Jose Police Chief Rob Davis. "We see the social cause and the social problems that come with illegal immigration, everybody understands that, what we're saying is that everyone, no matter where you are, need to be careful when you're making laws in which you're asking the local law enforcement officials to take the main lead in federal immigration enforcement because that drives a wedge between local law enforcement and a variety of different cultural groups that exist within our cities, including those who are American citizens." The Chief of Police is worried about undocumented people being afraid to share information that can help solve a crime. It is clear that they follow state law but that doesn't include reporting people to the Immigration and Naturalization Service. The councilmembers remember the early 1990s, when people last boycotted Arizona for the state's refusal to observe Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Travelers canceled their vacations to Scottsdale and the Grand Canyon. Together they hope to peacefully demonstrate their disapproval of the immigration policies taking root in Arizona. A council committee chaired by Mayor Reed last Wednesday scheduled a June 8 vote by the full council.Δ

Santa Clara County To Take Action Against Arizona

t the request of Supervisor George Shirakawa, the County of Santa Clara Board of Supervisors on a 41 vote, agreed to participate as an amicus curiae or 'friend of the court' in opposition to Arizona's anti-immigrant law, SB 1070. Supervisor Shirakawa, overtaken by emotion, recalled his family's history. As a descendant of Mexican and Japanese immigrants, both sides of his family were impacted by the government's past practice of systematic prejudice through the Repatriation Act in the 1930s (a law that forced people of Mexican descent to go to Mexico even though many were Americans) and Japanese Internment during World War II. "I see the Arizona law as a veiled attempt to do the same thing again. I had planned on playing golf in Arizona in the fall but I don't

plan on brining my papers with me to prove that I am American, probably sixteen generations on my Latino side, and four generations on my other side," said Supervisor Shirakawa. "Any and all communities of color should not be a target of the government." In addition, Supervisor Shirakawa asked the County's lawyer to return to the Board with a resolution affirming that employees of the County of Santa Clara - sheriff deputies, social workers, correctional officers, and health workers - will NOT check into individuals' immigration status, unless required by federal law. While this is current practice by the County, this resolution seeks to provide reassurance that the tactics in Arizona will never be sanctioned in Santa Clara County. Δ

When California gained statehood in 1850, San José began planning for and setting aside several public squares including St. James, Washington, and Market Plaza. Today, San José boasts more 175 parks with 3,770 acres of land. "Designating land for public use was unusual for a city of San José's size in 1850. This exhibit will examine the different types and uses of parks for the last 160 years," said Melissa Johnson, Curator of Interactive Media and the Curator of Explore San José Parks. Las uvas son buenas para el corazón

NN ARBOR, Michigan.- ¿Es posible que el consumo de uvas haga más lenta para muchas personas en Estados Unidos la secuencia de alta presión sanguínea y resistencia a la insulina que conduce a la enfermedad cardiaca y la diabetes Tipo 2? Los científicos del Sistema de Salud de la Universidad de Michigan están analizando señales del efecto de las uvas en la reducción de los factores de riesgo relacionados con la enfermedad cardiovascular y el síndrome metabólico. Se cree que los efectos se deben a compuestos fotoquímicos -antioxidantes que ocurren naturalmente - y que están incluidos en las uvas. atinas Contra Cancer held their Mother's Day Walk on Sunday, May 9, walking from San Jose City Hall Plaza to the Mexican Heritage Plaza. Despite the rain and overcast day, spirits remained high. Latinas Contra Cancer (LCC) is a Silicon Valley based non-profit whose goal is to educate and raise awareness about cancer, as well as provide support group services for Latino families, targeting the underserved, Spanish
speaking population, faced with this terrible and often deadly disease. Founded in 2003, LCC collaborates with other agencies working in the Latino community around issues of breast and other cancers. Their bilingual website provides resources and other cancer information. Latinas Contra Cancer works with health providers and grass roots groups to create educational tools to raise awareness and improve culturally and linguistically sensitive services for Latinos. Δ

County to Implement a Non-Detention in Juvenile Hall Policy for Youth Under 13 Years Old SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CALIF he County of Santa Clara Board of Supervisors accepted a series of recommendations and policy changes that will guide decisions to limit the detention of children 12 years old and younger in Juvenile Hall. The action followed a report from the Juvenile Justice Commission that looked at the specific circumstances of youth that had been detained. The Juvenile Justice Commission reviewed the court files of 30 youth 12 years old and under who had been housed in Juvenile hall and had a case opened. Seventeen of them had been a Department of Family and Children's Services client and had been physically or sexually abused; 11 had a mental health diagnoses including Post Traumatic Disorder Syndrome, bipolar, depression, borderline personality, suicidal, oppositional defiant and conduct disordered; 13 already had significant drug and alcohol problems; 21 had prior Probation contact without detention; 18 had a parent who was incarcerated, dead or disappeared; six were not attending school at all; 13 were diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, or Serious Emotional Disturbance, and/or have an

Individual Education Plan; five have gang affiliation; nine have been or were currently placed in an institutionalized setting; 27 had one or more of the above issues. Although the Probation Department's recommendations are considered, the Board acknowledged that the final decision about the placement of youth is made by the Courts. Probation Chief Sheila Mitchell reported on discussions with other Probation Departments in the area and with local community based organizations. She indicated that as a rule, the Probation Department works with community partners to place kids under 13 years old. Multidimensional Treatment Foster Care (MTFC) is a proven cost-effective alternative to regular foster care, group or residential treatment, and incarceration for youth who have problems with chronic disruptive behavior. The County expects to be able to offer this service through a community based partner, beginning July 1. Most Bay Area counties struggle with the challenge of appropriate placements for youngsters with serious behavioral challenges. Fresno County has used MTFC model with success for the past four years. The County will examine their approach for lessons learned.

na gran polémica se ha desatado luego del incidente ocurrido en la Escuela Secundaria Live Oak en la ciudad de Morgan Hill el pasado 5 de Mayo. ¿Fue discriminatorio enviar a los estudiantes a su casa? ¿es correcto que en celebraciones del Cinco de Mayo salgan con su bandera? Algunas personas en San José han reportado que recibieron una infracción CVC 35111 por portar banderas en su vehículo. ¿tienen las banderas un mensaje equivocado? "Todo acto que genere provocación y recrudezca enfrentamiento no puede ser bien visto, yo creo que en el ámbito multicultural el respeto es la base fundamental. Yo llamaría a que todo aquel mexicano que porta un símbolo patrio se conduzca con respeto y que haga respetar a su bandera", dijo, David Figueroa, Cónsul General de México en San José. "Ni la bandera Mexicana ni la bandera Americana. La bandera es un símbolo que representa a nuestros países y como tal merecen respeto. Pienso que debemos usarlas en eventos cívicos y ceremonias oficiales. La gente en Cinco de Mayo manda mensajes equivocados", dijo Lupe García de la ciudad de Freemont. "La bandera de la paz debe reinar en el con-
flicto de la escuela de Morgan Hill. San José Police clamp down on Cinco de Mayo street celebrations

By Sharat G. Lin ars adorned with Mexican flags and red flags of the United Farm Workers - founded by former San José resident César Chávez - crept down Santa Clara Street bumper-to-bumper. Joyous rhythmic Mexican music blared through the air of a cooler-than-normal Sunday in May. Some car owners were out to show off their low-riders whose pneumatic suspensions made their cars "dance" in the street. A few gunned their engines in quests for attention. In general, there was little evidence of activity that would endanger public safety. However, during the daytime on May 2, 2010 during two half-hour intervals on seven blocks of Santa Clara Street, there were at least 9 different cars stopped by San José police. This amounts to more than one stop every seven minutes. In the majority of cases, a citation was issued. Two cases led to arrests. Another case involved a time-consuming inspection of the under-carriage of an SUV. Two cars were released without citation. Cars were being asked to stop for inspection without any obvious traffic violation or unsafe behavior. With bumper-to-bumper traffic, speeding was impossible. Each case was photographically documented. This writer walked along Santa Clara Street between Eighth Street to First Street for a half hour from 4:35 pm to 5:05 pm and again from 5:45 pm to 6:15 pm. The time in between was spent walking down Market Street to San Carlos Street up to Discovery Meadow where the official Cinco de Mayo celebration was being held and no police cars were on patrol. The frequency of stops was a reduction in targeting the Mexican American holiday over 2009, when 14 vehicle stops per hour were photographically documented along a 4-block section of Santa Clara Street (Sharat G. On Sunday evening between 9 and 10 pm, as traffic backed up downtown, police road blocks prevented cars from turning south from Santa Clara Street towards San José State University or east from Fourth Street. The road blocks appeared to be aimed at funneling traffic out of downtown to the eastside or onto Freeway I-680. However, southbound traffic on King Road and Jackson Avenue was also prevented from reaching Story Road. Several drivers later complained that police refused to allow them to reach their homes even when they offered to show proof of residence in the area. A similar scene was repeated on the night of Wednesday, May 5. Numerous groups of youths began walking down Santa Clara Street in the evening. Police resumed stops of vehicles and pedestrians. By 10:30 pm the road blocks were in place to divert traffic out of the downtown area. Before midnight, Santa Clara Street had been virtually evacuated. "I've never seen anything like this anywhere else," observed new resident Chris Lepe. "In the tenth largest city, downtown has been turned into a ghost town." The police presence was intensely focused on Santa Clara Street where Latinos were out to enjoy Cinco de Mayo by cruising into downtown from the eastside. The visible police presence was important in effectively preventing numerous groups of youths from doing mischief. However, the arbitrary pulling over of cars at random checkpoints yielded few citations for violation of public safety, such as driving while intoxicated or threats of violence. Most youths were too young to be even admitted into bars. Instead, many citations were for license or registration documents out of order, parole violations, and issues not related to immediate public safely. This raises the question as to why the San José Police Department does not implement the same sorts of random checkpoints during other crowded festivals like the Saint Patrick's Day parade, Tet Festival, Veterans' Day parade, Independence Day, Amgen Tour
of California, or Christmas in the Park. A similar question can be asked about why SJPD does not evacuate downtown routinely on Friday and Saturday nights or on New Year's Eve. The controversy over alleged San José police targeting of Latinos began years ago with charges that police made more arrests during Cinco de Mayo celebrations than at any other time of the year in apparent response to a few years of reported rowdiness and public drunkenness. These allegations against the police were given more weight when the San Jose Mercury News (Sean Webby, "Drunkenness arrests in San Jose outpace other California cities," October 18, 2008, http://www.mercurynews.com/sanjose-public-drunkenness/ci_10755739) reviewed arrest data, showing that 57 per cent of those charged with public drunkenness in San José in 2007 were Hispanic. Yet Hispanics represented only 32 per cent of the city's population in that year. Community leaders have repeatedly emphasized that the community is not against the police, but really wants to work with police to ensure public safety. A visible police presence is necessary to keep the peace, but frequent stops exclusively on Cinco de Mayo appear to be discriminatory. The unnecessary stops only serve to drive a wedge between police and the community, and in particular between the police and Latino youths. This can only have an adverse impact in preventing and investigating crime. Community activists have repeatedly appealed to the San José City Council to review police practices on Cinco de Mayo. At a time of San José's most severe budget crisis ever, many residents are asking how the city can afford thousands of hours of police overtime pay for unprecedented enforcement actions exclusively on Cinco de Mayo. rothers Sam and Jimmy Orozco have been jamming together since they were children and used to play Funk and R&B during open mic nights at Iguana's, a taqueria in San Jose that the brothers own. But as time passed, the brothers began to get tired of playing the same styles of music over and over. They were looking for something else. Something that was louder, faster and more aggressive. The brothers found what they were looking for when Albert Bracamonte plugged in his guitar at Iguana's and began shredding through some heavy riffs. Modern Ruinz was born. Bracamonte and the Orozco brothers have been creating music together for over five years. Modern Ruinz recently sat down with El Observador to talk about their musical journey and plans for the future. LL: How did you guys come up with your name? MR: "The name goes with what is going on nowadays with the economy suffering and everything else," Bracamonte said. "We're what's coming out of these times. The name also just sounds cool." LL: Describe your music. MR: "Our music is a mixed bag because we all come from several styles and backgrounds," Sam Orozco said. "We all bring something different to the table." "We also try not to be repetitive by working with different rhythms and textures," added Jimmy.
LL: How do you guys go about writing songs? MR: "Usually it will be a little concept or idea by anyone of us and we just build around the riff or beat," S. Orozco said. "We write in parts and eventually get a song out of those parts." "We also try not to stick to the standard way of writing songs. For example, some parts of a song may not comeback into the song," Bracamonte added. "We have some songs that are really technical, then we have songs were we really focus on the singing. Sometimes the songs are written in an hour if we are really into it." LL: Do you have any songs in Spanish? MR: "We have one and working on another one right now," S. Orozco said. LL: What's next for Modern Ruinz? MR: "Our band is a work in progress, S. Orozco said. "We're always writing and recording songs and should be coming out with something soon." LL: What do you want to be remembered for? MR: "For Being good musicians who took their craft seriously," S. Orozco said. "And for just being awesome," added Jimmy. osé y Jesus son de Veracruz, Uziel de Cuernavaca, Morelos y Angel de Guanajuato pero ahora se encuentran en Fresno. La banda ha tocado en Bakersfield, San Francisco, Oakland, San José. Tienen su propio estilo de metal, punk, hardcore y desarrollan su propia música. LL: ¿Cómo se formó JABU? J: Jose: Los cuatro tenemos poco tiempo viviendo en los Estados Unidos y vamos a la escuela de adultos para aprender inglés y ahí es donde encontré a Angel, el guitarrista de la banda. Y a Uziel, el vocalista y así se inició JABU. LL: ¿De dónde salió JABU? J: Jesus: Eso fue cuando empezamos a grabar las primeras dos canciones que tenemos en el Myspace. Pues JABU es la primer letra de cada uno de nosotros y asi fue como empezamos. LL: ¿Qué nos pueden decir sobre las canciones? J: Uziel: La música la escribimos entre José y yo pero todos tenemos participación. Y bueno realmente participamos en lo que es la música y la letra en si las escribe José o las escribo yo.
LL: ¿Qué los inspira? J: El desamor pero nos reimos de nuestras desgracias y tratamos de sacar lo más simpático de cada experiencia. A veces las experiencias son ciertas, contar historias sobre eso y de también de lo que esta pasando en actualidad. Y nos inspira mucho las niñas bonitas.

ormer farm workers and union members wrapped up the final speaker series that celebrates 40 Years of the Chicano Movement in San Jose on Wednesday, May 12, at the Mexican Heritage Plaza. "Often we get caught up in the democratic political this
and that just because there's people that look like us up there, but don't forget our roots and our humble origins, because it's the blood of our movimiento to question authority," said Louie Rocha, Jr., community and labor activist. Rocha was joined by Salvador Bustamante, former farm worker and leader of the United Farm Workers Union in 1979, Calvin Miaw, organizer for Unite Here! Local 19, and Rev. Deacon Sal Alvarez, Vice-President of the Dolores Huerta Foundation. All the speakers answered questions that dealt with the labor in the Chicano Movement, how they remembered it. One of the questions looked at the contributions made by Mexicans in the labor movement, primarily in San Jose. That's when Rev. Alvarez took us back to the 1950s, where no more than 65,000 people lived in San Jose and remembers when the Chavez family arrived from Arizona. People worked in the Evergreen area picking apricots,
like Cesar Chavez and the majority of Mexicans, but by the 1960s things would start to change. "You had a prize fighter in the family if someone was able to get into a trade or a job where you didn't get dirty throughout the day," said Rocha. "It was someone that was really looked up to because the fact that most of us were working in agriculture." The panelists all agreed that the United Farm Workers forever changed lives in the way it organized and the awareness it created. Cesar Chavez made a promise to dedicate his life to organizing farm workers, and along the way, changed the attitude of some of the speakers. "We need to be more imaginative, more creative in terms of the campaigns," said Bustamante. Bustamante recalls being 20 years old and witnessing so many leaders gather for one cause, to fight for union workers. He believes that there is a lack of leaders to inspire the
youth of today. As the first Vice President of the Services Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 1877, he worked on building bridges between unions and the community. Unite Here! Local 19 also works on building those bridges between different communities. The panel's intention was to honor the contributions of the older generations to the Chicano movement and to create a historical context for the current struggles and achievements of Chicanos advocating for social change in San Jose. "Our work is not done, we still have the need to solidify ourselves with workers who are suffering," said Bustamante. The event was organized by MAiZ and Teatro Vision with an intention to strengthen intergenerational engagement contributions of the Mexicanos in the labor movement. a música está corriendo rápido en la mente de Arturo Ortiz, el guitarrista de una nueva banda en San José que se llama “Aura Omega”. Junto con Giovanni Olguin (Vocalista), Christian Galicia (Bajo) y Alberto Villagran (Bateria). Aura Omega combina los elementos de la música industrial, oscura y electrónica para crear un sonido único. LL: ¿Cómo se conocieron? AO: "Todos estábamos tocando en otras bandas y nos juntamos. Yo conocí a Arturo hace un año y a Albert hace seis meses," dijo Olguin. LL: ¿Por qué Aura Omega? AO: "Pues tratamos de escogerlo entre muchos nombres pero cada nombre que escogíamos pertenecía a otra banda," cuenta Ortiz. "Estábamos viendo un CD con la palabra Aura, pero tambien ya existía una banda con ese nombre. Finalmente, Giovanni fue el que le agregó la palabra Omega." LL: ¿Cuánto tiempo tienen como banda? AO: "Tenemos un año nosotros tres (Ortiz, Galicia y
Olguin) y seis meses con Alberto". (explica Olguín) LL: Describan su música. AO: "La música está influenciada por muchos estilos de rock," dijo Galicia. "Nos gusta el metal, el dark o goth y la música electrónica." "También nos gusta la música industrial, progresiva y pop", agrega Ortiz. LL: ¿Cómo escriben las canciones? AO: "Yo escribo la música porque soy el que tiene las ideas para canciones en este momento", explica Olguín. "Escribo la música primero y después las palabras. Despues, cada miembro lo ajusta a su propio estilo a la música. LL: ¿En qué están trabajando en este momento? AO: "Estamos escribiendo canciones grabándolas," responde Olguín. "Queremos escribir y grabar cinco canciones más y después escoger las mejores para ponerlas en un disco". LL: ¿Cuál es el siguiente paso para Aura Omega? AO: "Tocar y grabar más música. Queremos tener más experiencia tocando en vivo," agrega Villagran. "También queremos conocer a otra bandas de rock en San José para

im McEntee fue un hombre que sembró amor, paz y compasión por los demás. McEntee dejó asuntos perso nales que atender para ayudar a los más desprotegidos. Su legado, sus enseñanzas y consejos lo llevaron a la gloria para ser reconocido como uno de los seres humanos más respetables y queridos en diferentes comunidades del Condado de Santa Clara. Jim McEntee fue Director de la Oficina de Relaciones Humanas del Condado de Santa Clara por más de 27 años y murió en el 2004.
