a Coalición de Bicicletas del Valle del Silicio insta a todos sus residentes a dejar los autos en casa y a salir al trabajo en bici el próximo 12 de mayo. Con esta acción miles de ciclistas del Área de la Bahía se estarían uniendo para cuidar sus bolsillos, su salud y el medio ambiente. Para el próximo 12 de mayo en toda la ciudad de San José se ha previsto instalar una 70 estaciones que regalarán agua, enegizantes, bolsos, entre otras cosas a todos las personas que se animen a montar una bici. “Esto se hará a fin de estimular a que todos desempolven sus bicicletas y dejen su auto en casa”, dijo Corinne Winter, Directora Ejecutiva de la Coalición de Bicicleta del Valle del Silicio. Según la coalición, un 40% de las personas vive a cinco kilometros de distancia de su centro laboral. El tramo no es tan largo y es ideal para la personas que incluso no están acostumbradas al ejercicio físico. “Si aquellas personas que viven cerca a su centro de trabajo dejaran sus vehículos, las ca rreteras contaría con 60 mil autos menos que contaminan el aire con los gases que emiten los

motorizados del tubo de escape”, explicó Winter. Los Concejales Sam Liccardo y Ash Kalra de la ciudad de San José, son uno de los seguidores de esta causa e instan a los residentes a participar. “Es importante andar en bicicleta sobre todo para cuidar los bolsillos, para cuidar el corazón y para cuidar el medio ambiente”, explicó San Liccardo. “Hemos hecho una buen trabajo de la zona oeste de San José hacia el centro de la ciudad. Tambien sabemos que necesitamos iniciar trabajos similares en la zona este de San José. Esto nos tomará entre dos a tres años y si es necesario construir más senderos para ciclistas”, expresó Liccardo. El Concejal Ash Karla, expresó similares opiniones y considera que viendo el multiple beneficio de andar en bici, van a seguir movilizando proyectos para construir y definiar vías expresamente para los ciclistas. ichard J. Rios began his professional career as the Director of Multicultural Programs. De Anza College where he advised, counseled and mentored many of the leaders in the Chicano student movement (1968-1971). At the State level,he was appointed by then Gov. Brown, Jr. to head the State of California’s Economic Opportunity Office (1978-1980). ). Here Richard J.

Rios was a very committed warrior in the War On Poverty. At the National level, Mr. Rios became the highest ranking Latino Government Official outside President Carter’s Cabinet when he served as Director, U.S. Community Services Administration (1980-1981). Rios later served as the State’s Deputy Secretary of Health and Welfare (1981-1983). Locally, Richard headed ESO (19711978) and was the president of the San Jose Development Corporation(1983-1984) .He retired as Deputy Director,Redevelopment Agency, City of San Jose. Over the years, Richard served on many community and civic boards, most recently, Center for Training and Careers (CTC), where he chaired its board for nearly ten years (19982008). Richard was admired and recognized by many of these organizations for his years of public service which benefited this community. Richard was a friend that will be missed by many of those he advised, counseled and mentored. These include Ron Gonzales. former San Jose Mayor, Rose Amador, CEO, CTC, Adam Escoto, former Superintendent, Ravenswood School District and many othes. Richard J. Rios was married to Susan Lujan Rios for 26 years. They had one daughter, Desiree Federman. He is sur-

vived by his wife, daughter and three grandchildren: Estreya 7, Xavi 5 and Amilana 2. He is also survived by his sister, Elaine Osborne, and preceeded in death by his parents, Pearl and John Rios

of Sunnyvale. Richard succumbed to cancer at the age of 68. A memorial service for Richard J. Rios was held on April 22, 2011. May he rest in peace.

esde la mañana del 11 de septiembre de 2001 el mundo cambió radicalmente. Las imágenes de la tragedia del ataque suicida a las torres gemelas en Nueva York con aeronaves comerciales secuestradas, repletas de pasajeros, y el posterior desplome de los edificios, fueron transmitidas a todos los puntos del planeta. Lo que nunca imaginé es que las acciones de terror, planeadas por Osama Bin Laden, terminaran perjudicando a los indocumentados radicados en Estados Unidos y dieran al traste con el arreglo migratorio que los presidentes George W. Bush y Vicente Fox estaban contemplando. Pero el terrorista más buscado del mundo, abatido el pasado 1 de mayo por fuerzas especiales estadounidenses en Pakistán, lo había modificado todo. Después del 11 de septiembre se desató en el país un ambiente antiinmigrante, que convirtió a los indocumentados en los chivos expiatorios de todos los problemas, dándole vuelo a la teoría de la invasión, que ha sido hábilmente aprovechada por los restriccionistas. Es difícil hacerle entender a los antiinmigrantes que en ese martes fatal hubo latinos y un porcentaje de indocumentados que fallecieron víctimas de la acción suicida de los miembros de Al Qaeda. Estadísticas del Departamento de Salud de la Ciudad de Nueva York concluyeron que cerca del diez por ciento de los 3,000 asesi-

nados por los seguidores fanáticos de Bin Laden fueron hispanos, entre estos: mexicanos, colombianos, dominicanos, ecuatorianos, peruanos, cubanos, hondureños, venezolanos, salvadoreños, argentinos y españoles. La Asociación Tepeyac, organización comunitaria, con sede en Manhattan, documentó un centenar de casos de indocumentados muertos, entre los que se contaban cocineros, aseadores y proveedores de otros servicios. Es casi imposible hacerle entender a los intolerantes, que los autores suicidas de la tragedia del 11 de septiembre ingresaron al país con visas legales estampadas en las misiones estadounidenses en el extranjero, y que entre sus víctimas están miles de latinos que participaron en las labores de limpieza de la Zona Cero, que han experimentado el dolor de que sus vías respiratorias se pudran como consecuencia del contacto con elementos tóxicos. A la Asociación Tepeyac acudieron más de 2,000 afectados, de los cuales 70 por ciento eran indocumentados. Ahora que el presidente Barack Obama se ha reafirmado en su puesto, desvirtuando las teorías de conspiración sobre su lugar de nacimiento, y se ha apuntado el logro de eliminar a Bin Laden, sería tiempo para que le hiciera justicia a los indocumentados que se han sacrificado por este país. or society’s members to experience personal acceptance, safety, security, and the respect which enables personal relationships, certain basic rules apply. Consider for a moment how many times behavioral standards which define what is ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ are ignored. My point is that for American society to function effectively, parents and role models need to transfer behavioral standards and religious beliefs to their children as well as to others they mentor. Having a faith taught to all of us is essential for our democracy to succeed. The separation of ‘Church’ and ‘State” is well defined in the U.S. Constitution. This concept is often misapplied. Many are offended by the ‘double standard’ which exists today .Especially consider the many instances whereby ‘false witness’ is performed by several public figures .Those who have asked President Barack Obama for his birth certificate are an example. What this amounts to is asking the President to ‘show his papers’. Until now no Anglo-Saxon President was ever asked to ‘show his paper’. Show me “your papers’ is an act of those who do believe that ‘you do not belong’. Back in the 1800’s before the Civil War, freemen (former black slaves) knew that to walk the streets of their community required that they carry evidence of being ‘a freed slave’ and therefore a ‘freed man’. Even as recently as the 1990’s, immigration officials would ask those suspected of being ‘undocumented immigrants’ to ‘show me your papers’. Many American citizens whose heritage was Mexican-American were often insulted and felt abused when this happened to them. One can imagine that President Obama has learned to be ‘cool’ about being asked to ‘show his papers’. ”These acts are racist in nature despite the rationalizations of many who express their opinions on mainstream media. . Consider the loving care of a Latino parent who prevents his/her children from wearing the ‘gang colors or gang shoes’. Have we allowed the ‘gang membership standard’ to change our personal behavior simply because they cannot accept letting a non-gang member wear their ‘colors’ or shoes? The Latino community could put an

end to this by speaking out. Most of us do not ‘covet’ their values and life style. Most of us resent those who believe that all Latinos could be, and are prone to be, “gang members.” Their use of violence and fear “steals” peace and tranquility. This diminishes us all. This sort of behavior ‘steals’ from members of ethnic groups the sense of ‘belonging’ as well as ‘being accepted’ in society. These actions are performed by being a ‘false witness.’ It is a remnant of the ‘Manifest Destiny’ dogma held by many Anglo residents as they migrated from the Atlantic seaboard towards the West Coast. Those who covet what we have are not aware of the damage they do to the entire society. So when they say that they want what little we have left, we best believe them. Many strive to achieve those levels of ‘conspicuous consumption’ which could be expressed by the clothing one wears, the restaurants frequented, the automobiles bought and used. Can you consider these acts as being ‘covetous’ in nature? Isn’t that what the practice of “keeping up with the Joneses’ amounts to? The real issue is ‘acceptance’. If we are to re-establish a ‘civil society’ which has ‘Law and Order’ then it is essential that all understand the role of faith and religion in the achievement thereof. What we need most today is less of avarice and more of sharing and compassion. Money cannot purchase what our society needs most today. We need to understand that if we practice those commandments directed towards human behavior, then we can achieve whatever our minds can conceive. We may even become innovative. Let’s begin being honest with each other as a starting point. Let’s also speak up whenever someone speaks dis-respectfully of another, especially our elected President. The silence of the majority is never acceptable nor warranted. As President Obama said, “We have better things to do. More serious things to attend to.” With ‘civil behavior’ we may be able to address our most serious issues without being diverted towards things that do not matter in the long run.Δ

En un comunicado emitido hace semana y media Mi Pueblo Fodos dice: “La campaña en contra de Mi Pueblo Foods empezó en Noviembre 2010, cuando el Concilio Intereligioso bajo la dirección de UFCW (siglas en inglés del Sindicato de Trabajadores de Supermercados) intentó presionar a Mi Pueblo Foods a que contrate ex trabajadores del Supermercado Suvianda. Era importante para el sindicato de trabajadores de Supermercado capitalizar la inversión que había realizado

con los empleados del Mercado Suvianda, quienes fueron ganando tracción en sus esfuerzos por organizarlos bajo el sindicato UFCW. En aquel momento, la UFCW esperó utilizar estos trabajadores para iniciar una campaña interna en sindicalizar a traba-

anta Clara County, Calif.In response to dramatic reductions in State funding and an increasing demand for library services, the Santa Clara County Library District Joint Powers Authority approved an $80 annual library card fee for non-residents of the District, effective July 1, 2011. Since 1988, the State has reimbursed public libraries for lending materials to non-residents of their district, and any resident of California could get a card at any public library in the state. Demands for service have increased to a point that the Santa Clara County Library District lends far more books to non-residents than District residents borrow from other libraries. At one time, the Library received over $2 million annually to partially reimburse the cost of this service. In the midst of an increasing deficit, the Governor’s proposed budget includes the elimination of $30.4 million in state funding for three of California’s most valuable public library programs: The Public Library Foundation, the California Literacy Program and the Transaction Based Reimbursement, a cooperative system of borrowing and loaning books that has existed statewide for several decades. The State Budget for Fiscal Year 2012 eliminates all funding for public li-

braries, including those that are part of the Santa Clara County Library District. Out of the current 356,107 Santa Clara County Library District cardholders, 202,559 are residents of the District. People living in the cities of Los Gatos, Mountain View, Palo Alto, San José, Santa Clara and Sunnyvale will continue to have access to their city libraries at no cost to them, and they will have the choice to purchase a County Library District card as a value-added service. The benefit of having a County Library card is that an individual or family may borrow up to 100 items at a time, per card from District libraries. ashington, (Notimex).- El Presidente Barack Obama dijo que Estados Unidos vive una nueva etapa a partir de este lunes tras la muerte del líder y fundador de la red al Qaeda, Osama Bin Laden. “Creo que todos podemos estar de acuerdo que este es un buen día para Estados Unidos”, dijo Obama en sus primeras declaraciones luego de anunciar la medianoche del domingo la exitosa operación que eliminó al hombre mas buscado por Estados Unidos. Hablando en la Casa Blanca previo a la ceremonia donde entrega de manera póstuma dos medallas de honor a familiares de soldados muertos en combate, Obama reitero su juicio que con la muerte de Bin Laden “el mundo esta mas seguro”. “Hoy recordamos que como nación, no hay nada que no podamos hacer cuando nos aplicamos, cuando trabajamos juntos, cuando trabajamos el sentido de unidad que nos define como estadounidense”, dijo. El mandatario recordó las celebraciones de júbilo y celebraciones originadas a través del país el domingo tras después de su anuncio, y las calificó como una muestra del patriotismo que persiste en la población. Obama tuvo también palabras de reconocimiento a quienes tomaron parte en la operación que culminó una cacería de diez años, y cuyos nombres e historias “quizá nunca conoceremos”. “Recordamos también la afortunado que somos de tener estadunidenses que dedican su vida a protegernos. Americans have been waiting for justice for over nine years now, and finally justice has been served.” said Debbie Lee, spokesman for the group. Debbie’s son Marc A. Lee was a US Navy Seal and was killed in Iraq in 2006. “I’m so proud that it was a Navy SEAL team that killed Osama bin Laden, and I just wish Marc could be here with his fellow SEALs to share this with the country he died protecting. Marc graduated from his SEAL training shortly before 9/11 and when that heinous attack was carried out by Al Qaeda, Marc wanted more than anything to see justice done. De acuerdo con la hija del líder de Al Qaeda, de 12 años de edad, los soldados capturaron a su padre durante el asalto militar contra el fortificado complejo en Bilal Town, en la ciudad de Abbottabad, antes de asesinarlo frente a su familia. Después que el comando estadounidense abandonó la residencia con el cadáver de Bin laden, fuerzas de seguridad paquistaníes recuperaron cuatro cuerpos acribillados -el hijo de Bin Laden, una mujer y dos hombres- y detuvieron a dos mujeres y seis niños, de entre dos y 12 años de edad. Otros informes sugieren que 16 personas, incluidos mujeres y niños, fueron detenidos en la casa, la mayoría de ellos ciudadanos árabes, según la información divulgada también por los diarios paquistaníes Dawn y The News. Safe Teen Driving By Cinthia Rodriguez – El Observador

ouncilmember Ash Karla teamed up with Impact Teen Drivers, law enforcement leaders and Oak Grove High School Administration to host a ‘Safe Teen Driving’ event. This event was in conjunction with City Council proclaiming the month of May ‘Safe Teen Driving Month’ in the City of San Jose. “Our youth are an asset we cannot afford to lose to needless crashes,” said Councilmember Kalra. “Every one of us has a responsibility to educate our youth and their families about the dangers of distracted driving and prevent this potentially deadly behavior.” More than two-thirds of fatal teen crashes have nothing to do with drugs or alcohol, but are a result of distractions, speed, and other poor driving decisions. The crash risk per mile driven by 16-year-olds is twice that of 18- to 19-year-olds and about four times the risk for drivers ages 30-59, according to a study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. “My son did not have to die that night,” said Martha Tessmer, educational outreach coordinator, Impact Teen Drivers. Tessmer’s son was a victim of distracted driving. Her son never came back from the movies. She wants others to make better choices. She speaks to crowds of adults and students about driving without distractions. She wants students to envision themselves in

preventable situations and learn from their mistakes before its too late. “As a parent, I should be watching my son play football,” said Tessmer. “Now I emphasize those bad choices that become deadly habits when behind the wheel.” More more than 3,000 lives are lost from avoidable everyday driving behaviors and distractions. Three main types of distractions include: visual, when the driver takes his eyes off the road; manual, when the driver takes his hands off the steering wheel, and cognitive, when the driver takes his mind off driving. Although all distractions are dangerous, texting while driving encompasses all three types of distraction, making it particularly lethal. “I don’t use my phone anymore while driving, but I will encourage my friends,” said Annie Chung, senior at Oak Grove High School. The event allowed teen drivers to navigate their vehicles through a cone course under the supervision of California Highway Patrol officers. Teens drove and simultaneously send text messages to show the real life impacts of distracted driving. This was done to provide the students with personal experience regarding why reckless and distracted driving is the number one killer of teen in the nation. as multitudes en las marchas del 1 de Mayo quedaron en la historia. Después de la histórica marcha de 2006 estas cuentan con menos seguidores. ¿Está la comunidad inmigrante decepcionada?. “Es obvio que no vamos a tener una reforma migratoria. Por eso pienso que la gente se cansó”, dijo Elena Garrido del vecindario de Mayfair. “Lo único que pienso es que debemos seguir presionando una vez más. Por eso propongo hacer una marcha todos los meses”, dijo José Sandoval de Voluntarios de la Comunidad. “Yo no creo que esto pueda ser posible. Si no vienen para la marcha que se organiza cada año, no creo que la gente vaya a venir todos los meses. La gente ya no cree en una

reforma, tampoco creo que esté intimidada, porque la comunidad no se deja asustar sino miren lo que pasó hace cinco años”, dijo Jacinta Rosas. “La gente no quiere marchar porque no hay nada. Estamos a la deriva, no hay líderes, no hay propuesta, no hay nada”, dijo José Carbajal. La marcha del 1 de mayo del presente año siguió la misma ruta-Story & King al Municipio de San José- contó con la participación de algunos miembros del Concilio Intereligioso como Jon Pédigo, Padre Bob Morán, Bill Leinenger , Rabin Melanie Aron y Sandy Perry. Participó también el Presidente de la Mesa de Supervisores, Dave Cortese y otros líderes de la comunidad como Aarón Reséndez, Samina Faheem representando a la comunidad musulmana. he Rehabilitation Center and Burn Center at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center (SCVMC) were named as 2011 Professional Research Consultants (PRC) 5-Star Award winners for excellent patient awareness. The Rehabilitation Center and Burn Center at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center received their 2011 PRC Awards for Inpatient Services - Overall Quality of Care. “It’s truly a testament of an incredible team. It’s hard work. It’s an emotionally challenging job,” said Jill Sproul, nurse manager, burn center, SCVMC. “The people that are here are really committed and the patients can tell.” Although burn center patients may experience life-altering injuries, they make sure the staff knows how grateful they are. The staff is also quick to insure they remain happy during their stay. As one of only two Burn Trauma Centers in Northern California, the Burn Center’s treats over 250 patients a year. While the Rehabilitation Center treats more than 550 patients every year. SSCVMC

uses research findings to continuously improve and enhance patient satisfaction. “They’ve done a phenomenal job,” said Phil Long of San Ramon. “They’ve got me 85 percent ready and they actually shortened my stay because of the progress I’ve made.” Long suffered a head injury after an empty wine barrel fell on his head. At first he had limited limb movement but with physical therapy, he has been able to perform daily activities. He has a minimum of three hours of physical therapy, six days a week. The expert and specialized staff of the rehab center demonstrate their excellence by providing compassionate and quality care for patients with the most complex cases. Physicians, nurses and therapy professionals help patients develop the skills they need to get closer to independence. “This is a really good facility. It wouldn’t be the same without the doctors and staff,” said Long. “I wouldn’t go anywhere else.” Phil Long is an active patient at the Rehabilitation Center at Valley Medical Center.

Innovations in Women’s Health Shine Brightly at Local Events Nationwide (NewsUSA) revention, diagnosis and treatment of women’s health conditions have come a long way, baby. phy (CT) scanner, custom designed for the breast, eliminates the need to compress breast tissue and produces a 3D image in as little as 10 seconds. The CT scanner can also detect tumors as small as 3 mm that are difficult to see on a mammogram. * Fibroids. Some fibroids don’t need treatment, or can be managed by taking birth-control pills or other drugs. But others do require surgery, in some cases a hysterectomy. In the past, a hysterectomy would require many weeks of painful recovery, leaving large scars. Thanks in part to newer robotic surgery techniques, like da Vinci Surgery, hysterectomy patients can leave the hospital the next morning with only a few tiny (1/2 to 1 inch) incisions to heal, reaching full recovery within days. * Osteoporosis & Osteoarthritis. Advances are being made in the treatment of osteoporosis, including new drugs, like Forteo, designed to increase bone mass rather than just prevent bone loss * Gestational Diabetes. Left untreated, gestational diabetes can lead to overweight babies. New testing standards announced in March, according to the American Diabetes Association, may mean more women affected by the condition will have the chance to reduce their bloodsugar levels. n May 3, Empire Gardens Elementary, San Jose Unified School District (SJUSD) held their first annual health fair. Hundreds of students and parents participated in outdoor games as they learned about the benefits of being active. The school’s nurse along with parents decided to organize this event to address childhood obesity. “I want parents to know what they have in their community and be able to meet some of the different resources,” said Chantal Malebranche, registered nurse (RN), SJUSD. As the school nurse, Malebranche witnessed firsthand the need for parents to become familiar with the different resources available regardless of immigration status. She knows how shy parents can be. This health fair was an easy way of exposing the parents to available information resources. “There is a lot of information that I was missing,” said Maria Quezada, mother of a second grade son. “It encouraged my kids and me to eat more fruits and vegetables. It also motivated us to be more active.” The health fair engaged kindergarteners and fifth graders alike by handing out jump

ropes and hula hoops. They also interacted with different plastic fruits while playing games. They were reminded of the benefits of making healthier choices. Some of them also showed off their zumba moves. “Sometimes parents cannot afford health insurance for their children and during the health fair they will learn about eligibility to those programs,” said Malebranche. Some of the organizations present included Kaiser Permanente, Catholic Charities, Diabetes Society, Dairy Council, Women-Infants & Children’s Programs (WIC) and San Jose Healthy Start Family Support. All these organizations provided their information in both English and Spanish languages. They also answered questions about immunization, preventing drug abuse, and emergency preparedness. “I learned a lot, like about foods that have a lot of sugar and high fructose syrup,” said Sandra Mejia. “I plan on using the information.” Empire Gardens Elementary will encourage exercise and lifestyle changes that are attainable yet fun for students. A second elementary school in SJUSD is scheduled to have a similar health fair in the near future.
