Supervisor En la carrera por el Distrito 1 para el puesto de Supervisor del Condado de Santa Clara resultó ganador el republicano Mike Wasserman. Medida V Los votantes aprobaron la medida “V”. In 1975, he was the youngest governor elected and has become the oldest governor elected at 72 years of age. On election night, the race seemed tight, Brown only leading by a few. What seemed to be like an early victory speech, Brown thanked the youth for their votes and everyone else who believes in California’s future. Brown was right to assume victory over opponent Republican Meg Whitman, who broke a spending record by putting more than $141 million of her money into the race. “Looks like I’m going back again," said Brown. "Now, as you know, I’ve got the know-how and the experience and all those other things I said.” According to an exit poll of Latino Decisions, Brown's victory was due in large part to the overwhelming support of Hispanic voters toward the Democrats, a difference than ever before, 86% for Brown and 13% for Whitman. The Democratic ticket had several other victories. Barbara Boxer will remain in the Senate, with a similar story like Brown’s. San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom will be the next Lt. Governor, while Kamala D. Harris will take over Brown’s position as Attorney General. Latino Republican voters also helped win two new governorships, four new house seats, and a senate seat. More than doubling the number of Republican Latinos in Congress and giving the nation three Republican Hispanic governors for the first time. In Nevada, Senator Harry Reid (Dem.) was reelected with support from Latinos with 68% of Latino voters supporting him. In Florida, Republican Marco Rubio won election to the Senate with 55% of the Latino vote. In New Mexico, Republican Susan Martinez became the nation’s first Latina Governor joined by Brian Sandoval, Nevada’s first Latino Governor. However, Janet Brewer was reelected despite the fact that 71% of Latino voters supported her opponent.

Closely watched race in San Jose: San Jose City Council, District 5 – Xavier Campos declared winner over Magdalena Carrasco. If so, he will take his sister’s seat, Nora Campos, State Assembly District 23-elect.

Day on the Bay: A Resounding Success By Dave Cortese - Supervisor District 2

“Taste of Alviso.” Four of the fabulous local restaurants, Lunch with Tony, Vahl’s Restaurant, Maria Elena’s, and El Taco de Oro Taqueria, as well as the Michigan Avenue Market, provided free samples of their menus to the attendees. These delicious samplings, from raviolis and sandwiches to tacos and more, offered a taste of the multicultural community of Alviso. Thank you to all the volunteers that made this event successful including Independence High School Interact, SJSU Alpha Phi Omega, Central County Occupational Center and County Parks Volunteers. I would like to thank our Gold Sponsors, Target Corporation and Allied Waste Services, for their generous donations to make this event possible. With their support, we were able to provide free flu shots and the free BBQ food for attendees. am very pleased to say that the First Annual Day on the Bay, A Multicultural Festival was a resounding success. The finicky weather held out long enough so that the community could enjoy a beautiful day of fun, learning and togetherness. Held in partnership with the Santa Clara County Parks and Recreation Department, the Day on the Bay is just the first of many festivals to come that will celebrate the great diversity that is in Santa Clara County. Located in the beautiful community of Alviso at the new Alviso Marina County Park, this festival drew over 4,000 people. There were also over 90 exhibitors passing out information on their services. These included everything from county and city services to nonprofits and local businesses. I would like to also thank the Santa Clara County Firefighters for donating their time to work the BBQ to provide the free hamburgers for everyone at the festival. In addition to the free food, children were able to pick out a free pumpkin to take home for Halloween. There were many activities for families to enjoy, such as face painting and arts and crafts. Additionally, many families took free kayak rides on the Alviso Slough and were able to view the variety of wildlife, which lives in the San Francisco Bay. Thank you to the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office and the San Jose Fire Department’s Search and Rescue who ensured the safety of the kayakers on the slough. The attendees were treated to a day of diverse entertainment on two stages, which included Mexican Folk Dancing, African American Cultural Dances, line dancing, two middle school bands, three local bands and the laughter of Dr. Laughaway. ow that the Registrar of Voters, County of Santa Clara has reported the uncertified vote tally which will probably not change outcomes already reported, here are the results of decisions made by City of San Jose voters on Election Day, Tuesday, November 2, 2010. Assembly members Paul Fong (District 22), Nora Campos (District 23) and Jim Beall (District 24) were elected to represent their local constituencies. Our local diversity will be well served by these elected officials. Mayor Chuck Reed endorsed Magdalena Carrasco (District 5) and Larry Pegram (District 9) only to have them appear not to be elected per Wednesday's vote count. Both would have been supporters of efforts to downsize the current budget deficits. City monetary obligations, current and future, must be downsized if the city is to avoid bankruptcy sometime in the future. Voters of Council District 5 appear to have elected Xavier Campos to succeed his sister, Nora Campos by a vote of 3523 (51.73%). Magdalena Carrasco received 3,286 votes (48.27%) in this highly competitive election race. What this means is that union issues will have a ‘friend’ who will resist changes of those pension contracts, which need to be downsized. Current union contracts permit civic employees, especially police and firefighters, to benefit from very favorable retirement contracts, which permit retirement at 90% of salary level by age 55. The major issue Councilmember-elect Xavier Campos would have to face and deal with is the reconciliation of current personnel salary and retirement benefit obligations, which will dominate the revenues, received by the City of San Jose. Will the unions accept some sort of adjustments such as indexing retirements to the level of revenues received by the City? One way to change these current contracts is for the City of San Jose to declare bankruptcy when the appropriate time comes for that decision (just like Pittsburg, CA). City budget allocations will dominate the agendas if faced by Xavier Campos. We shall see how he copes with the pressure of dire fiscal issues the City faces. For Council District 7, Madison Nguyen received 53.09% (5196 votes) compared to 46.91% (4592 votes) received by her competitor Ming Duong. That “Little Saigon” issue will have a few more years until it becomes history. Meanwhile Madison will continue to be in touch

with her constituents, continue to favor affordable housing and economic development. Again, the extreme shortfall of city revenues will impact civic service capacity and delivery. While Proposition 19 (legalize marijuana) failed at the state level, San Jose’s Measure U passed with 78.9% of voters in its favor. Measure U permits the City to tax the sale of medicinal marijuana sold by licensed dispensaries. It will be a while before national policy and our local policy are reconciled. The Federal Attorney General indicated continued enforcement of current federal law prohibiting the use and sale of marijuana. So users be wary! With respect to Measures V (limit the powers of labor arbitrators) and Measure W (which will allow the City of San Jose to offer reduced retirement benefits), Mayor Chuck Reed managed to gain advantages in his quest to normalize the current contractual union obligations being faced (and projected into the future). Future levels of city services will depend on the ability to contain personnel retirement obligations. Finally, at a national congressional level, the Republican tsunami gained 58 seats to gain control of the House of Representatives while the Democrats barely retained a majority control of the Senate. Several analysts project that now the Obama administration has an identifiable opponent (the Republican Party) will need to be more responsible and accountable. Somehow, the middle class taxpayers as well as small businesses need to benefit from programs recently passed by Congress. The most important public policy issue to be faced openly requires the encouragement of American multinational corporations to bring ‘home’ all that cash now stashed in offshore banks to avoid taxation. Their investment in factories, which provide jobs to the middle class work force, is a requirement because these capitalistic investments do not adversely add to the current humongous national debt. These corporate multi-national mega-giants need to balance profitability with the creation of employment in all sectors of the global economy. That is their daunting challenge today because, without discretionary money in the hands of consumers, there is no consumer economy anywhere, especially in America. Meanwhile, the American consumer must continue to be frugal in the face of the oncoming holiday season and its winter weather. These are the election outcomes seen now.Δ

he San Jose Police Department (SJPD) announced support for private sector collaboration between technology companies, CrimeReports.com (www.crimereports.com) and Logitech. The collaboration with the city can support shared public safety goals among community members. It is also viewed as an addition to Neighborhood Central, traditional neighborhood watch programs and social media tools like Facebook and YouTube. People can get near real time information about crime in their neighborhoods. The SJPD has been using CrimeReports.com since 2007 and the new neighborhood central application helps improve the awareness, engagement and communication on shared crime prevention issues. When someone installs one of Logitech's Alert Digital Video Security cameras at their home or in their neighborhood, they can voluntarily register the camera with the new Neighborhood Central crime prevention service. "We are excited to be the first law enforcement agency to support this new technology, which allows community members to participate in proactive public safety at whatever level they choose," said Rob Davis, Chief of Police, San Jose. "Vigilant community members are one of our most important and effective allies in preventing and fighting crime. By applying innovative technology from CrimeReports.com

and Logitech, San Jose's residents will be able to work with law enforcement officers and with one another to share information in the on-line and social spaces they already use each day." Police Chief Rob Davis and Mayor Chuck Reed refer to update of the system as neighborhood watch San Jose style. They believe this will improve the quality of life for the entire community and the city can remain one of the safest cities in the country. Also by registering the camera, police know there is one in the area. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not a requirement and police say the camera owner only shared information and video when they choose to do so. San Jose is the first to integrate private owned cameras. Logitech is donating 50 of the security camera systems to the city to put in the hands of neighborhood associations and especially those with crime hot spots. The HD cameras include wide angle, 50 feet viewing distance, built in DVR and night vision for the outdoor kind. The cameras only record motion and can be placed indoor or outdoor with different access points when not at home. Footage can be viewed on smart phones and with any Internet connection. The cameras range from $300 to $350 and it includes the software. For mobile access there is a yearly fee of about $80 that includes camera alerts sent directly to the mobile phone. San Jose Among the Twenty Cities Nationally Recognized for Best Immigrant Integration Programs Washington, DC ecognizing that local governments play a central role in developing and implementing immigrant integration programs, a new report from the National League of Cities (NLC) showcases 20 city programs for promoting social cohesion within the community. The report, Municipal Innovations in Immigrant Integration: 20 Cities, 20 Good Practices, is produced by NLC’s Municipal Action for Immigrant Integration (MAII) program and focuses on public safety, immigrant outreach, civic engagement and city services.

How to Help Kids Stay Safe Online

he Internet can be an important tool for the academic and social development of children and teenagers, but it can also expose them to certain risks, including bullies, scammers and inappropriate content. The Federal Trade Commission recently launched a campaign to help parents and guardians of children deal with cyber security. The campaign is called Net Cetera and it features tips, videos, and downloadable guides. "The idea is to help parents start a conversation with their children, regardless of their age, about online security," said agency spokesperson Alvaro Puig. They can surf the web by using the home computer or other electronic devices such as mobile phones that belong to adults. Parents and guardians should supervise small children at all times, as they might come across inappropriate content. Once a child is ready to surf the web, parents can take the following measures to ensure safety: * Choose which sites they can visit * Activate parental controls if available * Frequently monitor their online activities Online Safety for Children between 8 and 12 years old As kids become more independent and knowledgeable about the Internet, they might start using it to research homework or to search

Astronauta insta a los jóvenes a estudiar Por Rosario Vital - El Observador “Claro que podemos, yes we can! Todo es posible en esta vida si uno persevera y busca lo que más le gusta. Es importante estudiar y echarle ganas”, dijo José Hernández, Ingeniero y Astronauta de la NASA durante una charla que ofreció a los estudiantes de la Universidad Nacional Hispana (NHU siglas en inglés). En una charla motivadora Hernández contó sobre su infancia, habló de la rectitud de sus padres y narró cómo creció entre los campos del Sur de California y su viajes a México. También contó que gracias a la intervención de una maestra logró que sus padres permanecieran en un solo lugar. “Mis padres siempre nos apoyaron en los estudios, pero constantemente teníamos que viajar a México y le pedía a la maestra que nos dejara mucha tarea durante los tres meses de ausencia en California”, dijo el destacado astronauta quien aprendió inglés a la edad de 12. José Hernández aún narraba la experiencia que sintió al ver despegar al espacio el primer astronauta a la luna. “Lo observaba en una televisor de blanco y negro con una antena que tenía muchas veces que agarrar para obtener una mejor señal. Miraba la televisión, salía al campo para ver la luna y así me la pasé viendo esa histórica transmisión. Pero cuando un día leí la historia de Franklin Chang Díaz, el primer hispano que subió al espacio tomé la determinación de que quería ser astronauta”, explica muy orgu lloso el ingeniero. Hernández no se convirtió en astronauta de la noche a la mañana. El lo intentó por 12 años, hasta que en el 2009 finalmente fue llamado por la NASA. En agosto de 2009, Hernández se desempeñó como especia lista de misión con la misión STS-128 de la tripulación a bordo del transbordador espacial Discovery. Durante su misión de 14 días en la Estación Espacial Internacional, la tripulación viajó más de 5,7 millones de kilómetros.

“Llegamos al espacio en 8 minutos y medio. Uno siente mucha presión por eso es importante la preparación física a la par con la educativa”, cuenta Hernández. “Me sorprendió la historia de una persona que creció en los campos y se convirtió en una astronauta, increíble”, dijo Christopher Sánchez de Latino College Preparatory Academy (LCPA). Celebrating Local Artists: The 5th Anniversary of the McKay Gallery

an José CA. - When the Leonard and David McKay Gallery opened five years ago, local historian and art collector Leonard McKay waxed on about the importance of local artists recording the history of the era in which they lived. Today his vision is realized at his namesake gallery inside the Pasetta House at History Park in Kelley Park. Celebrating Local Artists: The 5th Anniversary of the McKay Gallery will open its exhibit focusing on the art collection begun by McKay more than fifty years ago. The exhibit opens to the public on the afternoon of Saturday, November 20, and runs through March 2011.

Using Leonard McKay's art collection as a starting point, this exhibit will also include more recent additions to the collection as well as highlights from History San Jose's collection of paintings. Two rooms of the McKay Gallery will feature paintings by ADM Cooper and neverbefore exhibited drawings from Cooper’s sketchbooks. Astley David Middleton Cooper was born on December 23, 1856 in St. Louis, MO, attended Washington University in St. Louis, where he studied European art and later lived with Indian tribes through the regions of the Western U.S. Cooper came to San Francisco at the age of 24 and then in 1883 moved south to San

Jose, where the handsome artist frequented the local saloons, and according to lore, often paid his bar tabs with his art. Cooper’s contribution to historic art and his style of painting have made his work highly recognizable. Other artists included in the exhibit are: Laurence Burnham, Frances Harvey Cutting, Albert Thomas DeRome, Charles H. Harmon, Andrew P. Hill, R. G. Holdredge, Frances R. Malovos, Vida McCracken, Anthony Quartuccio and Marques Reitzel. Conference for Silicon Valley residents caring for aging loved ones. The Caregivers Count! Can Diet Help Treat and Possibly Prevent Autism?

Young has been living through the first two stages of that evolution with regard to her views on how diet can affect Autism Spectrum Disorders, but feels the third stage is just around the corner. “When it comes to our research, we’re a bit like the square peg in the round hole,” said Dr. Young, Chief Medical Advisor for the NoHarm Foundation (www.noharmfoundation.org). “It’s

not that other doctors aren’t gaining interest in what we’re doing with regard to diet and autism, and it isn’t that the results aren’t remarkable. It’s more that the medical community just isn’t accustomed to something this new, and the established protocols for publishing findings just don’t fit when dealing with something truly unique like this. Traditionally, findings like ours would be an offshoot of previous research, and

publishing an article about it would include lots of references to other articles, which is the standard. But what we’re doing has both the virtue and the vice of not having ever been tried before, and there is just no mechanism in the bureaucracy set up for what we’ve discovered. At face value, we’re using our Spectrum Balance Protocol Diet to control disorders that have baffled researchers for decades. How do you present results like that to an established medical community without a chorus of disbelief, especially when our research isn’t based on anything that’s come before? So, in spite of the resistance from the medical community, I’m taking the track record we’ve accomplished over the past five years out directly to the families of autistic children because they deserve to have this information now - independent of the ‘process’ that the system expects”. Dr. Young’s approach to helping autistic individuals primarily using just food, does not involve expensive drugs or large amounts of supplements, and it does not promote specific products or treatment services. Instead, it simply suggests a highly specific diet that is designed to reduce the unwanted symptoms of autism. “The problem we have theorized has actually been indirectly supported with plentiful historic third party research. We have located many studies that attribute manganese sensitivity as being one of the root causes of various neurological disorders, which looked suspiciously to me like the symptoms of autism. Since the problem occurs most specifically within the brain chemistry, neither blood nor hair testing alone will necessarily reveal and/or confirm this condition,” she said. “Specifically, we are talking here about individual sensitivity to manganese, and not a syndrome that can be applicable or susceptible to all children or adults. I often use the analogy of a person being allergic to a food such as peanuts: As one person could eat a pound of peanuts and have no ill effects and the next person may experience a violent allergic response to a miniscule exposure, it is obvious that the response produced by the peanuts is far more important in the equation than the amount of

peanuts that might be measured and quantified in one’s body.” She acknowledged that there is much disagreement and conflicting information in nutritional/toxicology research fields as to what actual levels of ingestion and retention of manganese is even considered “safe” above very trace amounts. However, she said her team has found numerous studies internationally that have pointed to negative consequences suspected from manganese levels that are currently considered to be within acceptable standards. That means that children eating what could be considered a healthy diet could still be ingesting enough manganese to affect their brain chemistries in a negative fashion. “We’ve designed a diet based on food choices that are healthy and inviting, inexpensive and simple to prepare that limit the amount of manganese and specific anti-nutrients in the body,” Dr. Young added. “It is this diet that we supply in detail for free on the Foundation’s website, which is helping many people -- not all -- achieve better outcomes than their current regimens on medications. bottle. Apply about 1 tablespoon to a soft, wet washcloth and gently scrub damp skin in a circular buffing motion (not too long or with too much force). Rinse with warm water and follow with moisturizer below. Moisturizer. We need a moisturizer to re-fat the skin after cleansing. Washing with soap lifts away dirt, make-up and dead skin and keeps skin bright and pores clear, but it also strips our skin of its natural, protective (and wrinklefighting) oil known as sebum. A light-bodied and absorbent, non-clogging oil such as grapeseed or jojoba applied to stilldamp skin after rinsing away your liquid soap-based cleanser will perform the same function as costly lotions and creams but at a fraction of the price. Ingredients: 1/2 cup grapeseed oil 1/2 cup jojoba oil 1/4 teaspoon lavender essential oil 1/4 teaspoon geranium essential oil Directions: Combine all ingredients in a small squeeze bottle, apply a teaspoon to the palm of hand, rub hands together and smooth over damp, freshly cleansed skin, pat dry any excess water or oil. Toning and hydrating mist. As the day goes on, you'll inevitably lose that fresh glow

of the morning. Some areas of your skin might become increasingly dry while others might be oily. A simple mixture of pure water and toning lavender and geranium essential oils can help diminish an oily appearance while moistening dry areas.

Ingredients: 1 cup water 1/4 teaspoon lavender essential oil 1/4 teaspoon geranium essential oil Small spray mister bottle

Directions: Combine water and essential oils in a bottle. Shake vigorously and apply two to three spritzes of the mist to skin. Smooth over surface if needed.

En el último día de filmación, las actrices Lucero y Silvia Pinal, así como el resto del reparto y del área de producción convivió con la presidenta del Patronato del Sistema DIF Hidalgo, Laura Vargas de Osorio. La producción también grabó algunas escenas en las haciendas de Minthó y Tetlapayac, en el municipio de Almoloya, locaciones

donde Televisa junto con todo su equipo trabajó durante 120 días a partir del pasado 19 de abril, concluyendo este 29 de octubre. Además, la telenovela incluyó locaciones en distintas comunidades y parajes de los municipios de Nopala y Actopan. Respecto al personal técnico y de producción, según datos de Televisa, fueron alrededor de 100 personas quienes integraron el equipo de trabajo. Minero chileno corre en maratón

ueva York (Notimex).- Edison Peña, el minero chileno conocido como “El Atleta”, quien permaneció con otros 32 compañeros atrapados a 700 metros de profundidad en la mina San José por casi 70 días, aceptó la invitación de participar en el popular Maratón de Nueva York este domingo. Peña, de 34 años, fue conocido por no dejar de hacer ejercicio y correr por medio de los camino subterráneos entre cinco y 10 kilómetros al día durante el tiempo que estuvo atrapado en la mina. Los coordinadores de la versión número 41 del maratón, que recorrerá los cinco condados de la “Gran Manzana”, indicaron que Peña, quien

fue el doceavo minero en ser rescatado el mes pasado en la mina de Copiapó, será el invitado de honor del evento. Mary Wittenberg, presidenta del maratón, destacó que el minero representa valores como “perseverancia” e “inspiración” y que será un honor su participación en la carrera anual. Peña, quien llega a esta ciudad el jueves, participará en la carrera promocional de cinco millas a realizarse el viernes. La maratón inicia en el condado de Staten Island, luego pasa por Brooklyn y Queens, recorre algunos sectores de Manhattan, sube hasta el Bronx y regresa al Parque Central, donde termina.

LA CIUDAD PROPONE PROHIBICIÓN DE BOLSAS DESECHABLES DE PLÁSTICO Y PAPEL San José propone una nueva prohibición de bolsas desechables de plástico y papel obtenidas en todas las tiendas de comercio. Las tiendas podrían ofrecer bolsas de papel echas de por lo menos 40% material reciclado por un costo de 10 centavos. Animarían a los clientes a hacer compras con bolsas reutilizables.
