Six Figure Spanish-Language Ad Buy Highlights GOP Obstruction to Immigration Reform

A Debate It Was Not By Hilbert Morales

courages Latino and immigrant voters to make their voices heard at the polls. Various mobilization efforts are already underway in these six states, as well as in other locations featuring significant Latino voting populations. For example, in Colorado, Latino civic engagement organizations aim to turn out over half of all registered Latino voters this cycle through aggressive mail, phone, and grassroots outreach campaigns. And in Arizona, organizations are on track to turn out 230,000 Latinos in Phoenix, Yuma, and Tucson. “This is our moment—from Miami to Denver—to use the power of the Latino vote to fight back against the anti-immigrant attacks, the SB1070 copycat laws, and the petty politics in Washington that have blocked all progress on immigration reform," said Ben Monterroso, Executive Director of Mi Familia Vota Civic Participation Campaign. “Latino voters must take stock of who is with us and who is against us. This is the moment to vote for leaders who will offer real solutions to our broken immigration system and who will commit to building an economy that works for all working families." The ad buy and larger mobilization effort are designed to increase turnout among “surge” and “low propensity” Latino voters, and help close the gaps between those eligible to vote and those who turn out on election day. According to Frank Sharry, Executive Director of America’s Voice, “The outrageous decision by Senate Republicans to block the DREAM Act last week demands a strong response. We are pleased to partner with SEIU and Mi Familia Vota Civic Participation Campaign to bolster the on-the-ground efforts to mobilize voters and build support for needed immigration reforms.”

ashington, DC – The Service Employees International Union, Mi Familia Vota Civic Participation Campaign, and America’s Voice are launching Spanish-language radio ads in nine media markets across the country. The ads point to the Republican Party’s obstructionism on immigration reform, cite the GOP’s successful effort to block a vote on the DREAM Act last week, and encourage voters to support the candidates who “support our families, and make our dreams come true.” The $300,000 ad buy is the largest national ad campaign from pro-immigration reform organizations, and marks the beginning of a voter mobilization drive across the nation to hold politicians accountable for demonizing immigrants and blocking progress on common sense immigration reform. The ads will run in Phoenix and Tucson, AZ; Denver, CO; Miami and Orlando, FL; Chicago, IL; Las Vegas, NV; and Houston and McAllen, TX—all areas where Latino voters will play a decisive role in contested races this November and in 2012. For more information on the impact Latino voters are poised to make in the 2010 and 2012 elections, and how voters currently view the two parties, see this report from America’s Voice and these tracking polls from Latino Decisions. "Last week, the same Republicans who have rallied their support behind Arizona's ‘papers please’ law made a clear choice to crush the dreams of tens of thousands of highachieving immigrant youth," said SEIU Secretary Treasurer Eliseo Medina. "Today, it is critical that our community understands who is on their side and what is at stake if we do not hold our elected leaders accountable in November.” The ads are in additional to a national voter mobilization strategy this year that en-

he word ‘debate’ is defined as “a discussion, especially of a public policy question, in an assembly”. Debate involves the affirmative and negative sides of a proposition which is advocated by opposing speakers. California gubernatorial candidates Jerry Brown (D) and Meg Whitman (R), had their first face to face meeting. A litany of the experience and projections of each candidate was presented to those who cared to view this event that happened at U.C. Davis. Candidate jerry Brown touted his experience and made a few jokes especially about his pension. Meg Whitman recited all positions which have been already stated in her political ads funded by about $120 million of her own personal wealth. There was no pro & con discussion of taxation, education, state budget impasse (except to ‘punish the legislators’ by not providing funds), etc. etc. The most important public policy issue which could have been debated (pro & con) to reveal the differences between Republicans and Democrats was not evident at all. That issue was the cause of high unemployment levels in the current labor force in the state. What caused it? How could that cause be mitigated in the future? How to accelerate the creation of jobs in this new information technology era? The main issue of interest to all was ‘a plan to repair the current economy’. Presently, federal bail-out program funding is being used to shore up employment. A variety of sources reveal that many corporations have huge amounts of ‘cash on hand’, but none are investing it in a manner that creates jobs here in America. Meaningful jobs are in factories where a product is assembled (manufactured) and shipped out to locales where consumers may buy it. Some jobs can be created by government program and project funding. These are the ‘shovel ready’ projects which are a one time expenditure to correct a need which exists in the infrastructure for which government is responsible. This usually means construction work or maintenance/repair work on roads, bridges or overpasses, airports, and harbors. The current construction of infrastructure elements such as BART, Light Rail transit and high speed rail systems are such projects. The real problem today is that the American consumer economy has been seriously

damaged by the concept that America can be the creative think tank for a good idea, the scale-up (building the factories which produce the widget) is accomplished by investment of capital to build the factories and assembly lines needed. One issue not discussed at all was the impact of robotics, cybernetics and automation. Just compare photos of automobile assembly lines from the 1940’s with today’s assembly lines to see that fewer workers are needed because of automation. In the old days, all work was performed by a member of the skilled labor force. Today it is possible for many assembly tasks to be performed by an automated machine. The issue of how a former employe who was replaced by an automatic machine, may earn a living which enables the support of family, making timely payments on the mortgage, educate the children, purchase food and other commodities, etc. was not debated. That debate needs to happen. Take note that welfare and unemployment compensation entitlements do not solve this challenging situation. At the very base of this issue is that today’s corporate executive is focused on making profits without being committed to providing jobs for the local work force. Hence much manufacturing employment is now performed offshore where labor is cheaper and the permits, EIR analyses, licenses are simply obtained easily. Here in America all that takes time...in some cases about two years. Just consider the following: the American toy industry is replaced by toys “made in China”; All TV’s are made ‘offshore’; batteries are made elsewhere, and electronics commodities are now ‘outsourced’. Many of these commodities were once made in America…no more because it is more profitable to make them offshore. The debates of Brown and Whitman in the future must deal with their ideas and plans to enable markets to be established in California which are serviced by commodities manufactured in California in factories which employ Californians. Only then will the high unemployment levels drop. A skilled worker with a job that provides a reliable living wage is essential to the American consumer economy…that was not discussed at all. The face-off by Brown and Whitman was simply not a debate that enabled any registered voter to discern who would be the Governor, State of California. So a debate it was not.Δ

County of Santa Clara to Request to Opt Out of Secure Communities Program SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CALIF he County of Santa Clara Board of Supervisors unanimously voted to authorize efforts to opt out of the Secure Communities Program. This federal program involves local law enforcement in the enforcement of federal immigration law through an automated information-sharing system that compares fingerprint data collected by local agencies with a federal immigration status database. After hearing from community leaders, the Supervisors agreed that implementation of Secure Communities in Santa Clara County conflicts with the County’s policy not to participate in the enforcement of federal immigration law. The Supervisors further noted that participation might jeopardize the safety of County residents by causing residents not to call police or seek services out of fear that their immigration status will be questioned. The Secure Communities Program has been widely criticized for resulting in the detention and deportation of people with no criminal convictions or convictions for minor offenses like driving without a license, despite being promoted as a program targeting serious offenders. “From my perspective, this program does not make any community in our County safer, because it creates fear among our residents and prevents them from reporting crime,” said Supervisor George Shirakawa, Chair of the Board’s Public Safety and Justice Committee. “Our responsibility as a County is not to enforce immigration law at the expense of losing our residents’ trust.” Under current law, the fingerprints of anyone arrested in the County are sent electronically to the California Department of Justice. Historically, the Department of Justice has shared this information with the federal government for criminal law enforcement purposes only. However, under Secure Communities, the Justice Department has allowed fingerprint data collected by local agencies to be compared against fingerprints in the Department if Homeland Security’s Automated Biometric Identification System (IDENT) for the purposes of enforcing civil immigration laws. When this comparison leads to the identification of such individuals, federal agents seek the assistance of the County in detaining, questioning, and eventually taking custody of individuals. “It is unfortunate this so called voluntary federal program was implemented without our knowledge and without our approval,” said Ken Yeager, President of the County of Santa Clara Board of Supervisors. “We strive to implement transparent policies that are consistent with our priorities. We do not see how this kind of forced ‘collaboration’ can make Santa Clara County a better place.” In response to a request from County Counsel Miguel Márquez, the Department of Homeland Security has confirmed that Secure Communities is a voluntary program and provided a potential “Opt Out” process. Through today’s vote, the Board authorized the County Executive and County Counsel to take all necessary actions to allow the County to opt out of participation in Secure Communities. Following the Board’s direction, the County Executive and County Counsel plan to send a formal notification to the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE) and the California Attorney General requesting that they cease using fingerprints collected in the county to determine immigration status or investigate immigration violations.

He will be joining his good friend, Rev. Tim Storey during these services. Tim Story is an acclaimed author, teacher and life coach to a broad spectrum of people, from celebrities to top business executives. For Duane "Dog" Chapman, crime was a family business - though this was one family who ended up on the right side of the law. As a successfully reformed ex-con, Dog has made more than 6,000 captures in his 27-year career. He has come to run a successful bounty hunting business out of Hawaii, profiled on the popular reality TV series, "Dog the Bounty Hunter," aired on A&E. Shedding the spotlight on Chapman's particular business of tracking down the criminal element, the show distinguishes the former convict's ability to understand criminals and his efforts to help rehabilitate them after they were caught. This highly intense, charismatic ex-con and born-again Christian is the king of the comebacks.

Letreros para prevenir suicidios Por Rosario Vital - El Observador

C

Along with San Jose's birthday wishes she received the Steinbeck Award shortly after discussing the new Chicano civil rights movement at the Morris Dailey Auditorium at San Jose State University. As part of the 19th Annual San Jose Mexican Heritage and Mariachi Festival, the co-founder of United Farm Workers discussed politics and social change with Thomas A. Saenz, President, Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund (MALDEF) and three members of the Ozomatli band. The conversation was moderated by Richard Gonzales of National Public Radio. The audience traveled back in time with Huerta's stories about getting the Latino community to vote and be organized to get things done. She talked about the grape boycott and how perseverance really made a difference in accomplishing their goals. Dolores Huerta continues to work tirelessly developing Latino farm workers as leaders who advocated for the poor, women and children. Huerta is currently the President of the Dolores Huerta Foundation. The auditorium was filled by students that benefited from being reminded of UFW organizing as the panelists referred to the DREAM Act. Arizona's SB 1070 legislation was also discussed along with the nation's broken immigration system and the harm caused by remaining a broken system. As the conversation wrapped up, the famous slogan, 'Si Se Puede,' lingered in the auditorium resonating perfectly with every audience member.

Public Health Department Offers Free Vaccinations

S

anta Clara County, California – The Santa Clara County Public Health Department is offering three free vaccination clinics during October as part of BiNational Health Week for people who do not have health insurance or access to a physician. Vaccines for whooping cough/diphtheria/tetanus and seasonal flu will be available to protect residents against these diseases. 222 whooping cough cases have been reported in Santa Clara County as of September 14, compared to 25 in all of 2009. No deaths due to whooping cough have been reported in Santa Clara County, but nine infant deaths have been reported in California so far this year. Although flu seasons are unpredictable, getting the flu vaccine soon after it becomes available each year is always a good idea. The protection received from vaccination will last throughout the flu season. The 2010-2011 flu vaccine will protect against three different flu viruses: an H3N2 virus, an influenza B virus and the H1N1 virus that caused so much illness last year. At the BiNational Health Week vaccination clinics on October 10 and 16, whooping cough shots will be given to those over the age of 7 who live with or care for an infant. An additional clinic providing whooping cough vaccinations only will be held on Sunday, October 2. Seasonal flu shots will be given to people aged 18 years and over at the October 10 and 16 clinics. There is no cost to receive any of these shots, and these vaccination clinics are designed to provide vaccinations for people in our community who do not have health insurance or access to a physician. “No respetan mi arte”: India

P

“Mejor me quedo sola.

The Social Network

T

San Jose Police Activities League still kicking By Cinthia Rodriguez - El Observador

T

he San Jose Police Department is facing money problems like many other departments however volunteers are making a difference. Although there have been staffing reductions within the Police Activities League (PAL), the San Jose PAL volunteers will not stop serving the families and youth participants. Despite the reductions in services the initial planning for Spring 2011 has begun for Cambrian and East Valley. Meanwhile 2010 rolls along with games in the Cambrian, East Valley, Rose Garden and Willow Glen neighborhoods each Saturday through November. Registration fees that are paid by participants to PAL Soccer cover the operating costs for the league. Fees cover team uniforms, referees, field rentals, field equipment, public liability insurance requirements. Along with attending a professional soccer game played by the San Jose Earthquakes. The soccer league includes the municipalities of Santa Clara, Milpitas and San Jose.

The reduction in staffing and maintenance fees requires that more volunteers will have to continue to turn on the lights, secure the equipment and lock the gates. Volunteers currently organize the league from registration intake and team process to the game day field preparation and lining. The league and programs of San Jose PAL prides itself in providing a soccer program that is well organized in a pleasant environment and at an affordable cost. Scholarships are made available to families that cannot afford the current registration fees. At present 1500 youth and families are involved. In San Jose PAL Soccer will continue with their 2010 season. San Jose PAL invites everyone to join them on October 2, 2010 from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM at PAL Stadium with teams, players and families attending the annual Jamboree and Photo Day. San Jose Earthquakes will be present along with vendors and entertaining games with prizes. For more information visit, www.sjpdpal.com
