Los estudios científicos señalan contundentemente que si no se efectúan cambios ahora en la manera en que consumimos energía y utilizamos los recursos naturales, en un futuro cercano la Tierra experimentará una serie de crisis que amenazarán la supervivencia de la mayoría de sus habitantes. Los padres de familia tienen la oportunidad y responsabilidad de servirles de guías y ejemplos a sus hijos, al tomar medidas como las siguientes para conservar energía y proteger la atmósfera de nuestro hermoso planeta. Reemplazar bombillos de luz incandescentes por fluorescentes (CFL), los cuales usan 60% menos energía que los regulares. 2. Limpiar un filtro de aire ahorra 350 libras de bióxido de carbono al año. 4. Instalar termostatos programables. Ajustan la calefacción durante la noche y pueden ahorrarle hasta $100 al año en su cuenta de electricidad o gas. 5. Escoja enseres domésticos eficientes. Child Care/Calworks Program: Funding Vetoed

y surprise on Friday, October 8, 2010, during his completion of the 2010-2011 Budget, Governor Schwarzenegger vetoed $256,000,000 from CalWORKs Stage 3 Child Care Program. This eliminated childcare services for low income working families receiving Stage 3 funded child care through Santa Clara County Alternative Payment Providers. The immediate impacts of these cuts will include: * About 3,000 taxpaying, low income families who are currently contributing to the County’s struggling economy will be forced to decide between keeping child care or working. * Approximately 2,000 Santa Clara County Child Care Providers serving Stage 3 Families throughout the county will lose payment for services. This places their businesses at risk. * Destroys California’s 15-year investment, which moved families from welfare to work. This places 60,000 California families on the unemployment and welfare rolls. About 3,000 Santa Clara County children from low income working family homes are left without access to safe licensed quality childcare. The massive elimination of childcare services will result also in endangered child safety and lost learning opportunities for those young children who will be dropped from their child care programs beginning November 1, 2010. Child care providers are already struggling with high vacancy rates due to the current 11.1 local unemployment Rate in Santa Clara County. Further, these cuts will have a ripple effect on businesses losing employees who are working parents because they will be unable to work reliably without child care services.

a Iglesia del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús de San José se complace en anunciar su próximo banquete anual. Este año se rendirá un homenaje al Pastor, Mateo Sheedy. El padre Sheedy comenzó este banquete a fin de recaudar dinero para la reconstrucción de la Iglesia, severamente dañada tras el terremoto de 1989. Este año se presentará un documental sobre su vida.

La Familia Award

AN JOSE, California .—La Familia Payne of San Jose are the recipients of the 2010 La Familia Award. Brothers Daniel, Frank, and Ron Payne have a combined 49 years of military service in the United States Marine Corps. Additionally, Robert Payne has served as a San Jose Police Officer for 18 years. The family’s volunteerism includes working with the San Jose GI Forum, American Legion, Toys for Tots, The Republican National Hispanic Association, Girls Scouts of America, Relay for Life and working with at risk youth in local high schools and middles schools. The 2010 La Familia Award is the highest honor bestowed by the Hispanic Foundation of Silicon Valley and it is presented to an entire family who has demonstrated exemplary commitment and volunteer service to the community. This year the Hispanic Foundation Board of Directors decided to also recognize the long tradition of Hispanics serving in the U. S. Military. La Familia Payne’s history of service dates back to the 1900’s and the days of Pancho Villa when Great Grandfather Gaspar Cantu was a three star general in the Mexican Army and fought in the Mexican Revolutionary War. The Cantu family came to the United States in 1952 and settled in San Jose where the family con-
tinued its commitment and service to the community. Daniel Payne enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1973 and worked as a Missile Technician with a missile guided system. Frank Payne enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1973 serving in both Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Frank’s platoon was in charge in of loading over six war ships with supplies for troops in the Middle East and was just one of six honored for completing their mission in a timely manner. Ron Payne joined the Marine Corps in 1982, reaching the rank of Corporal and receiving an expert shooting badge, he retired after four years of service. He is currently a NASA engineer working on some of the country’s top programs including the Space Shuttle program. Robert Payne, the youngest of the Payne brothers, opted to serve and protect the local community through law enforcement. He has been a San Jose Police Officer for the past 18 years. He has been recognized by the CHP for his efforts in locating 32 stolen vehicles, 12 of which were occupied and all 12 suspects were captured. The family will be honored at the 21st Annual Hispanic Charity Ball, being held on Saturday, October 16, 2010, at the San Jose Fairmont Hotel.

Lessons in Retention:
Parents Can Help Young Minds Learn at Home

s an adult, you may know that lessons learned in high school or college can quickly go by the wayside. Studies have shown that children struggling in school score higher on achievement tests in June than they do at the end of the traditional summer break. Even more concerning are findings that indicate how these learning losses can add up with each passing year. In fact, by the time they reach middle school, some students may experience a 2-year lag in reading achievement. Even during shorter "breaks," parents should stimulate their children's minds through reading and learning games, during holidays, after school and on weekends. Experts have found that parents who incorporate learning toys and tools into everyday activities and playtime enable children to have fun while also learning lessons in physics, math, spelling and reading. Beginning in the '80s, tech toys started to play a role in helping kids learn. Toys like Speak & Spell engaged kids in new, fun, interactive ways to learn spelling. In fact, teachers have found technology to be effective in the classroom, as well. One such tool, the Tag Reading System from LeapFrog (www.leapfrog.com/tag), is actually recommended by 99 percent of teachers to help kids learn to read. Best of all, parents can
easily get it for kids to use at home, too, to reinforce learning. This handheld learning tool engages children in exciting, interactive ways. Ask them to talk about books they enjoy, retell the plots, and discuss their favorite characters. * Play board games and card games. While you enjoy valuable family time, you can help your child build skills related to problem-solving, memory, and comprehension * Go online. There are a number of websites with games that help children build important spelling, reading, and math skills while they're having fun. primeras horas de la mañana muchas personas quieren llegar a tiempo a sus respectivos centros de trabajo. Otros quieren tener unos minutos para agarrar un café, lo cierto es que ya se puso en marcha un servicio rápido y sin paradas que viene desde el sur de al centro de nuestra ciudad y viceversa en horas de mayor tráfico. El Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) comenzó un nuevo servicio de tranvía que mejorará su viaje significativamente. Así lo corroboró el Concejal del Distrito 3 y miembro de la Junta Directiva del VTA, Sam Liccardo. “Nos hemos basado en los estudios y encuestas trabajadas por las autoridades de transporte. Esta encuesta se llevó en diferentes idiomas y el público toma este transporte desde Santa Teresa que no se detiene hasta el centro de la ciudad”, dijo Liccardo a EO. La idea es que muchas personas hagan uso del servicio público. Especialmente después de las 7:00 am donde el tráfico está bastante pesado. La carretera 87 en dirección norte en horario matutino está bastante congestionada. Sin embargo este servicio llega en minutos al centro de la ciudad. El VTA ha establecido tres viajes durante las horas pico de la mañana rumbo al norte, y tres viajes rumbo al sur durante las horas pico de la tarde. Los trenes rápidos rumbo al norte saldrán de la estación de Santa Teresa durante la semana laboral desde las 7:16, 7:46 y 8:16 de la mañana. Rumbo al sur el servicio rápido saldrá de la estación Baypointe durante la semana laboral desde las 4:07, 4:37, y 5:07 de la tarde. Los trenes pararán en todas las estaciones entre Santa Teresa y Ohlone/Chynoweth, y continuarán sin parar hasta el Convention Center. Desde el Convention Center, los trenes harán todas las paradas hasta llegar a la estación de Baypointe. “Estoy satisfecho que el servicio va directo al centro de la ciudad. Me ahorro unos minutos y es bueno porque no evito todo el tráfico que hay en la autopista 87”, dijo

few weeks ago, the attempted coup d’etat in Ecuador was defeated. The same cannot be said for Honduras.
After the country's democratically-elected President Jose Manuel Zelaya was ousted in a June 2009 coup, he was replaced in office by a member of his own Liberal Party, Roberto Micheletti. The first successful Latin American military coup in decades. On October 11, Honduran Resistance members spoke about their fight against the coup at the San Jose Peace & Justice Center. "What the media says here and in Honduras, is that in Honduras everything is wonderful and nothing is wrong, while the reality of politics is another,” said Angel Antonio Jimenez, professor of economics, Nacional Pedagogical University Francisco Morazan, San Pedro Sula in Honduras. Jimenez lives in Honduras and is visiting the U.S. in support of the efforts by Frente Resistencia Hondurena de Los Angeles (FRHLA). The appropriate international attention to Honduras was short-lived, and though interest in the coup couldn't be avoided for at least a couple of days, it quickly faded away. One reason of why that happened can be given credit to the election of current president Porfirio Lobo. It is assumed that everything will get better with him in government, stated Jimenez. Things have actually got worse and that is evident through the economy. Jimenez remembers when the economy had grown 6% and how it drastically dropped after the coup. There is a lack of medicine, workers who try to unionize are fired, and people who live in the countryside are also being affected. "We are asking for the return of democracy in Honduras, so that our compatriots stop immigrating to countries that exploit them," said Carlos Mejia, member of FRHLA. "Because if we have democracy and economic progress we believe that the real development of the people to stop problems like that of hunger will only be achieved through solidarity and we need solidarity." Zelaya supporters have kept up their demonstrations to demand his return from exile in the Dominican Republic. On September, 15, over 200,000 people marched in San Pedro Sula but faced tear gas attacks. Overall, the Resistance is aware of 200 deaths, 8 of which have been journalists and the countless others that are harassed. "The repression has been becoming more violent and strong but not only because of the repression or the coup, it's also the arrests and the tortures," said Antonio. "But in spite of all this, the people are demonstrating great courage because they always resist and criticize both the government and ask in a systematic way to a possible constitutional foundation for the country." There is no current mechanism or force to get rid of the people supporting the coup, but the Resistance doesn’t give up. El anuncio lo hizo en la Escuela Secundaria de Evergreen Valley. Durante la presentación el Supervisor Cortese dialogó con los estudiantes sobre la importancia del voto. Este sistema se ha desarrollado por la compañía Verafirma y promete registrar a más votantes de una manera sencilla,segura y menos costosa para todos los ciudadanos. EO dialogó con Peter Allen, representante de Verafirma sobre este moderno sistema, el primero de la nación que se lanza y pretende ayudar a que más votantes se registren en los procesos electorales. “Estamos tratando de simplificar todo. Los votantes tienen que ir a register.verafirma.com a través de un dispositivo móvil como un celular, I-pad, I-phone. Chile celebra rescate Santiago, (Notimex) l presidente chileno Sebastián Piñera dijo tras culminar el rescate de los 33 mineros desde el yacimiento San José, en el norte del país, que los trabajadores dieron un ejemplo de compañerismo, coraje y lealtad. En un diálogo con el último rescatado, el jefe de turno Luis Urzúa, Piñera señaló que “nos sentimos orgullosos de todos y cada uno de los 33 mineros porque nos han dado un ejemplo de compañerismo, de coraje y de lealtad”. El mandatario agradeció a los “miles y miles de personas que trabajaron incansablemente para que ustedes estén aquí con nosotros”, entre quienes mencionó a los ministros de Minería, Laurence Golborne, y de Salud, Jaime Mañalich, y los jefes de rescate. El gobernante “recibió el turno” en forma simbólica de manos de Urzúa y lo felicitó porque “cumplió con su deber, saliendo al último, como lo hace siempre un bien capitán”, tras lo cual agradeció a Dios por el rescate realizado en las últimas horas. "El sueno del celta" recounts an eventful journey that starts in the Congo in 1903 and ends in a London jail, one morning in 1916. Here is the story of the vicissitudes of a legend: Irishman Roger Casement. Hero and villain, traitor and liberator, moral and immoral, his multifaceted figure dies out and is reborn after his death. Casement was one of the first Europeans to denounce the horrors of Colonialism with sound arguments. From his trips to the Congo and the Amazonian region of Peru two memorable reports survived whose revelations shook the society of the time. These reports exposed a painful truth: it wasn't the savagery of the inhabitants of the Congo or the Amazonia that turned civilized Europeans into barbarians; it was the latter who, in the name of commerce, civilization and Christianity, committed the most barbarous acts. What he witnessed during these two trips changed Casement forever and led him to embark on a different journey, this time intellectual, which was just as—or even more so—devastating. This journey took him to confront an England he admired and become an active militant for the Irish Nationalist cause. In the middle of World War I he traveled to Berlin to conspire against the United Kingdom and in 1916 he participated in the Easter Rising, the act that finally led to his imprisonment. Homosexuales contentos por resolución Los Angeles,(Notimex) na jueza federal estadounidense con sede en Riverside dispuso una histórica orden de restricción nacional, con la que se suspende la política que prohibía el ingreso a las Fuerzas Armadas de los homosexuales. Con la resolución emitida este día por la jueza Virginia Phillips, se da por terminada una política que se había mantenido por 17 años, conocida como “Don’t ask, don’t tell” (No preguntes, no digas), que se aplicaba a las preferencias sexuales en las fuerzas armadas. El Departamento de Justicia tendrá 60 días para apelar la decisión de la jueza, que consideró inconstitucional la disposición después de un juicio de dos semanas sin jurado en un tribunal federal de Riverside. La resolución fue recibida de manera positiva y hasta vitoreada por las comunidades de homosexuales y lesbianas, así como por organismos defensores de los derechos civiles en el país. “Hereafter” te da la pista "Hereafter" ofrece tres historias interconectadas que pueden servirnos para analizar el tema con la seriedad que se merece. El film comienza de una manera impactante, con la periodista francesa Marie LeLay (la actriz belga Cécile de France), una estrella de la televisión de su país, disfrutando de unas hermosas vacaciones junto a su pareja en una paradisíaca isla tropical. Mientras está realizando compras en la feria del pueblo, un tsunami impacta contra la costa, derribándolo todo a su paso. El mar pronto se lleva a Marie, y solo un milagro hace que sobreviva. Sin embargo, en los momentos más dramáticos, Marie "ha visitado" lo que parece ser el Más Allá. ¿Ha sido un sueño mientras estaba inconsciente, o lo ha visto de verdad? La respuesta la tiene el espectador, pero lo cierto es que ella ya no volverá a ser la misma. La segunda historia tiene como protagonista a Matt Damon, quien encarna a George Lonegan, un obrero norteamericano que tiene un don, al que él vive como una maldición. Cuando era niño, fue sometido a una operación en la que, técnicamente, permaneció muerto durante unos minutos. Al regresar a la vida, trajo con él una extraña capacidad para percibir las almas de los seres queridos que rodean a los vivos. Durante mucho tiempo, George se ganó la vida ofreciendo sus servicios a aquellos que buscaban comunicarse con los muertos,
pero la extraordinaria carga emocional que cada una de esas sesiones acarreaba terminaron convenciéndolo de que era mejor dedicarse a otra cosa, para la desazón de su hermano Billy (Jay Mohr), quien sabe que ese talento puede equivaler a una mina de oro. La tercera historia no tiene estrellas, y está protagonizada por dos niños gemelos, Frankie y George McLaren, quienes interpretan a Marcus y Jason, los que llevan una vida complicada junto a una madre alcóholica. Pero cuando Jason es atropellado por un vehículo tras huir de unos bravucones que lo acosaban, Marcus comenzará una búsqueda desesperada para tratar de comunicarse con el hermano que acaba de fallecer. Asi recurrirá a todo tipo de charlatanes, hasta que finalmente dé con el único hombre que realmente puede ayudarle a saber si existe el Más Allá, y por sobre todas las cosas, cómo está su hermano. Giovani Dos Santos regresaría al futbol español Madrid, (Notimex) l delantero mexicano Giovani Dos Santos, del equipo Tottenham, podría regresar al futbol español luego de darse a conocer la posibilidad de que sea cedido a Sevilla o Villarreal. Los equipos interesados en el joven futbolista van en aumento, luego de que apenas hace unos días se informó del interés por parte del Inter de Milán y Liverpool, de buscar los servicios de “Gio”. Según información de la Cadena SER, el jugador no ha tenido el nivel esperado con los "Spurs", por lo que su regreso a tierra ibérica podría ser una opción rentable. La buena actuación que ha tenido con la Selección Mexicana no le ha valido para ser tomado en cuenta más seriamente por el entrenador de la escuadra británica, Harry Redknapp y, por el contrario, el futbolista hasta el momento ha entrado sólo de cambio para algunos partidos, agregó el medio.
