"The importance of keeping our community informed is an achievement that El Observador (EO) has had. I congratulate this good performance in our community," said CA State Assemblyman Joe Coto and former chair of Latino Caucus of the California Assembly. Along with Assemblyman Joe Coto, several additional local officials have recognized EO’s efforts of keeping the community informed for 30 years. Congressmembers Zoe Lofgren and Mike Honda, the Board of Supervisors Santa Clara County, as well as San Jose’s entire City Council and Mayor Chuck Reed. The city’s commendation states that EO provides information with cultural and language sen-

sitivity, commitment, involvement, and many social, economic and public policy issues. It also highlights the continuous support to aspiring reporters and the contributions made by the weekly newspaper. “EO has earned a great reputation in the community. I can’t stop reading it week after week. A newspaper both in English and Spanish,” said Supervisor Dave Cortese, who led the effort in recognizing the newspaper’s presence in the county. The resolution presented by the board of supervisors recognizes EO for its tireless dedication to the Latino Community, serving as a respected and reliable source for relevant news, but also as an advocate for furthering the community through education.

NCLR Urges Party Leaders To Denounce Negative Campaign Ads

W

ashington, DC—Janet Murguía, President and CEO of NCLR (National Council of La Raza), sent letters today to Democratic National Committee Chairman Timothy Kaine and Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele, urging both Democrats and Republicans to denounce efforts to advance campaigns by scapegoating Latinos. NCLR, the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the United States, issued the following statement:

tactics. In addition, we are urging them to take the necessary steps to ensure that all of their candidates and campaigns refrain from using this type of maneuvering for the remainder of the election season. “As a nonpartisan organization, we have worked closely with members of both parties, and we do not support or endorse any candidate for office. This is not a question of taking issue with any individual candidate or his or her policy positions. This is a matter of protecting our democratic process and promoting respect, civility, and common decency for all Americans. “These kinds of ads are offensive and disrespectful and have no place in our electoral process. They should not have a place in the Democratic or Republican parties either. We urge both parties to renounce such campaign maneuvers and avoid scapegoating in this critical election year.”

Ocurrielcias

“NCLR is very concerned by how several candidates for office in both parties are stirring up anti-immigrant sentiment for political gain. Recent ads aired across the country have used photos, footage, and language that contain blatantly negative stereotypes and caricatures of Hispanic Americans. While extreme attacks are, unfortunately, not uncommon to this election year, we are exhorting the leaders of both parties to immediately denounce such

T

he Latino voter really has three options this coming Election Day, November 2, 2010. Voting Republican, voting Democratic, and not voting at all. To be an involved citizen who gets the respect of others, Latino voters must vote because it indicates that you have exercised your right to vote which makes you some elected official’s constituent. Many youthful voters are very impatient with the progress made by the Obama Administration that was elected on the theme “Change you can believe in.” So let’s take a look at the reality, which may be perceived by the issues faced and addressed by the Obama Administration since taking office during January 2009, only 22 months ago. First, actions taken prevented the collapse of the world’s monetary system undermined by eight years of neglect by the prior Republican Bush Administration. Second, was the courage to bankroll financial institutions and the automotive industry with massive amounts of ‘bail-out funding’ that added to an already inflated national deficit. The outcome was that our financial system did not collapse and the world economy was sustained. That deficit was created by the Bush Administration which conducted two wars (Iraq and Afghanistan) using money borrowed from other nations while refusing to tax the very rich. Also Obama proposes to tax the extremely wealthy. The issue of jobs needed by the unemployed is really a false issue. The real issue is that corporate executives have focused on profits only without also being the creative stewards who create and sustain jobs in America. Corporations have parked profits made overseas ‘offshore’ to evade taxes that would pay for infrastructural elements needed by business (airports, harbors, roads, power grids, etc.). The unemployed voter must realize that jobs are located in factories. Corporations have located factories in offshore areas where labor is cheapest and have almost no rights to demand safe working conditions. Education has been supported with the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) programs. Now student loans are obtained directly from a federal agency rather CONTRIBUTORS: MARIO JIMENEZ HECTOR CURRIEL CINTHIA RODRIGUEZ

than a bank. Community colleges have received ‘expansion monies’ to increase the volume of students enrolled by 500,000 per year. President Obama has been harassed as no other American president with accusations that he was not ‘born in America,’ that he is a Muslim; that he is a socialist; and that he doesn’t care. Consider the record: a health care national policy was passed. A schedule to withdraw combat troops from Iraq was achieved. A promise to deal with the ‘Don’t Ask-Don’t Tell’ military policy is being addressed by asking Congress to pass the legislation required; the privatization of the Social Security Program has been thwarted. Consider President Obama’s effort to do something for the poor and unemployed of this nation. Obama wants to establish a policy that would reduce abortions; to have wage policies, which would pay women on a par with men; and to care for the chronically sick. Even mental health issues were included in that national health care policy which no partisan Republican supported. Do not forget that President Obama re-established American international standing in the world of nations by being willing to negotiate and communicate. President Obama is a well-educated, patient wise man that is succeeding without any help from neither the extreme left nor the extreme right. He has confronted racist prejudice, bigotry and bias very well. The Obama Administration needs a Democratic majority in both the Senate and the House. Is it possible that the Latino swing vote will deliver that welcome outcome much to the dismay of the Party of ‘No.’ If you want the peoples business to get more attention than that of corporations and special interests, you are well advised to vote Democratic and tell your friends to do the same. The Latino vote must get out to the polls where it will count. Acquire respect and honor by voting in your own interest. Latinos need to demonstrate that they are no longer ‘the sleeping giant.’ Simply stated, if you the Latino voter want less government: vote Republican so that the very rich and corporations benefit. If you want a government that cares for the business of the people, vote Democratic. Then let us all live with that collective vote. The Latino vote really can count this time.Δ

Caltrans Awards $24 Million for Safe Routes to School

S

acramento - The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) awarded $24 million for 85 Safe Routes to School projects to improve safety for children in grades K-12 who walk and bicycle to school. Nothing is more important than the safety of our children, said Caltrans Director Cindy McKim. By improving safety, more children are encouraged to walk and bicycle to school, ultimately resulting in healthier children and less traffic congestion around schools. The funding will pay for new crosswalks, curb ramps, sidewalks, bicycle paths, traffic signals, flashing beacons, signs, striping, and pedestrian countdown signals. California was the first state to legislate its own Safe Routes to School program with dedicated funding in 1999. To date, the state has awarded $268 million for Safe Routes to School projects.

“Estamos demostrando que los gobiernos locales pueden hacer una gran diferencia”, dijo el Concejal Sam Liccardo. ith students gearing up to apply to colleges this fall, it struck me that despite minimal guidance — from the types of courses to the exams we should have taken — my four siblings and I all went to college. Yet a lack of guidance about the college-going process often sabotages academic opportunities for many students. There were 1,000 students in my freshman class in one of Chicago’s biggest high schools. Our counselor had his hands full advising hundreds of kids at one time. It was easy to miss out on critical guidance. I know now that I wasn’t taking the kinds of courses that would have best prepared me for college-level work and the College Board’s SATŽ college admission exam. By my sophomore year, I was unchallenged, disillusioned and straying from fundamental courses. Like most kids, I didn’t know that I should be taking four years of English, and three to four years each of math, science, and history or the social sciences. This core curriculum builds critical thinking and reading skills and lays the foundation for college success. By pure luck, I became friendly with some fellow students who were unusually excited about APŽ courses. I signed up right away, challenging myself with these university-level classes that prepare students to do well on the SAT and in college. In this group of ambitious

kids, peer pressure meant we were all focused on doing well and getting into college. Where Parents Fit In Parents naively think that as long as their kids bring home fairly decent grades and don’t get into trouble, there is no reason to get too involved. That was certainly the case with my parents, who didn’t fully understand whether or not I was getting the best academic preparation to help me get into college and do well once accepted. I’m here to tell you, kids shouldn’t fly solo or leave college planning to chance. Although I was lucky, expecting students to navigate the college admission process on their own is a gamble that could adversely affect their whole lives. Latinos Are the Future Latinos are the future leaders of this country; let’s be prepared to take the reins. Parents and students should seek help from school counselors to ensure that kids take the right classes, enroll in advanced courses, study hard and familiarize themselves with the SAT. There’s too much at stake — not just for our families but for our country as well. The College Board’s SAT exam will be administered across the country on Dec. 4. Most universities need to receive applicants’ test scores by January to make admission decisions. Last year, the SAT enabled 1.6 million kids to get on the path to a university education to build a better life for themselves and their families. Don’t be left out next year.

By Cinthia Rodriguez – El Observador With only a few days left before the voting polls open, Justice for Immigrants (JFI) made a last attempt to remind the community to participate in mid term elections. On June 24th, JFI lead a 30 member delegation made up of faith leaders, public officials, media, students, community organizers, university professors and county department representatives that handle immigrant affairs to witness firsthand, the effects of SB 1070 and the history behind the controversial law. “In this state, it is quite possible that there are counties that can go the way of Maricopa County and what we saw happening in Maricopa County is once they started, it spread throughout the entire state,” said Supervisor Dave Cortese. Another reason for the trip was to find out what lead to the passage of the law and analyze if it can happen in Santa Clara County. Maricopa County and Santa Clara County have roughly the same number of immigrants, estimated at 650,000. “What I was told time and again, is that if Latino voters in Arizona that were elegible to vote, were registered and voted even in moderate numbers that law never would have passed,” said Councilmember Ash Karla. A series of speakers also gave shared their personal testimonies when it came to being treated unfair for being undocumented and all the hardships it entails. Although they can’t vote, they help mobilize and spread the message of how urgent immigration reform is needed. Students are hopeful that the DREAM Act will pass, market workers want to be treated fairly and others want to see an improvement in the relationship between the police department and the Latino community. “Lots of time people feel that their vote will not make a difference and I’m here to tell you that is not the case,” said Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren. “There is much at stake in this election. As you think about the candidates, I ask you to consider what is their stand on the Arizona law.”

Education

Improving your child's math skills with fun, educational programs (ARA) ow do you tell the difference between an online game that is a valuable educational tool and those that are merely fun? It may be difficult to assess the educational value of computer programs aimed at children - especially those aged 4 to 9.

technology, so fun, online programs can be a great way to supplement what they're learning in school."

"Parents may see a familiar cartoon character on a product and think that must mean it's a good game for their child," says Mickelle Weary, Academic Director of DreamBox Learning K-3 Math, a web-based math program. "But is it really educational? Or is it just fluff? It can be very difficult to know until you've already bought the software and your child has played it for a while."

*Does your child's school use it? Or other schools? If so, that's usually a great endorsement that the product is worth trying.

H

You may allow or even encourage your child to spend a substantial amount of time on a website featuring her favorite cartoon characters (or even spend a lot of money on it), only to find that it's not very educational. Worse yet, you may also discover that the program doesn't challenge your child or hold her interest for very long if the software doesn't adapt to her skill level. "With education budgets being slashed nationwide, many parents feel that supplementing their child's education is more important than ever," Weary says. "Kids are naturally drawn to

Weary offers parents and teachers some tips for evaluating the educational value of a child's math game:

* Is it web-based? Does it create a specific account for your child? Web-based software, like DreamBox Learning K-3 Math, is more likely to offer individualized instruction than older generation CD-Roms, and certainly provides more feedback than a workbook. * Does the game adapt as your child's skill level and needs change? The best products start out by assessing where each child is developmentally in his or her math skills, then adapt all aspects of the game experience to match the child's needs. And as the child learns more, the game evolves to present challenges that keep pace with the child's abilities and interest level. * Does the game teach conceptual understanding of new ideas or is it simply a fun way to practice math facts?

* Is it interactive and engaging? The product should be fun as well as instructional. Making education fun is a great way to get kids to keep coming back for more. Children will be drawn to products that encourage them to interact and affect the outcome of the game. * Does the game give the child freedom of choice? Kids will be more engaged if they can direct how they play and choose what to do within the game. A good educational game should offer children options for how to progress at their particular skill level. * Are parents able to track their child's progress through the game? Look for a product that provides parents the ability to generate detailed reports on their child's progress. Not only do these reports give parents a snapshot of what their child is learning and how effective the game is, they can be shared with children's teachers to help focus on areas of strength and challenges. * Is the game credible? Are You Passing Dental Disease on to Your Kids? (NewsUSA) id you know that, like health problems such as cholesterol and high blood pressure, parents can also pass on bad breath and dental disease? No, cavities aren't genetic -- but the oral bacteria that cause dental diseases are actually contagious. When parents share utensils, drink out of the same cup, kiss or share toothbrushes with children, they spread bacteria to their children's mouths. Children can also spread the bacteria amongst themselves by such actions as mouthing the same toys. Not sure how to protect your whole family from dental disease? Make oral hygiene a family affair by following these tips: * Establish good oral health habits. You can wipe young children's teeth with water to help avoid cavities. Start brushing your child's teeth with a pea-sized amount of toothpaste at 12 months, and start flossing when the gaps between your child's teeth begin to close. Teach older children to brush their teeth for the correct amount of time -- two minutes -- by singing a song like "Happy Birthday" or setting a timer. And make sure that you're brushing and flossing, too. * Use probiotics. Oral care probiotics can

D

be an effective step in a child's oral care routine. EvoraKids (www.myevorakids.com), a chewable containing a special blend of oral care probiotics designed specifically for children, works by flooding the mouth with good bacteria. These good bacteria adhere to chewing surfaces in the mouth, including crevices, pits and fissures, helping to support tooth health. Parents can get into the act, too, with another version of the probiotic called EvoraPlus (www.myevoraplus.com). By properly balancing the bacteria in the mouth, these products help support dental health. * Visit the dentist regularly. A dentist is more likely to notice problems with a child's teeth and gums than a parent. It will make it easier to track if you are able to set up regular dental visits for everyone in the family at about the same time each year. Most children and adults should see their dentist every six months for a regular cleaning and check up. * Choose tooth-friendly foods. When providing meals and snacks, choose foods that help increase saliva flow, like fresh fruits and vegetables. Teach kids to drink water after eating to rinse their teeth. Avoid foods that stick to teeth, like soft, chewy candies.

Is Your Foot Fracture an Early Sign of Osteoporosis? CHICAGO

U

nexplained foot fractures may be the first sign of osteoporosis, a bone thinning disease which affects over 28 million Americans and accounts for 1.5 million bone fractures a year.?? According to the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, osteoporosis is frequently referred to as the “silent crippler” since it often progresses without any symptoms or isn’t diagnosed until a person experiences pain from a bone fracture. Georgeanne Botek, DPM, FACFAS, a Cleveland foot and ankle surgeon, explains that the porous nature of bones in people with osteoporosis makes them more susceptible to bone fractures, especially in the feet. “Because the bones are in a weakened state, normal weight-bearing actions like walking can cause the bones in the foot to break,” says Dr. Botek. “In fact, many patients visit their foot and ankle surgeon suffering from foot pain only to find out they actually have a stress fracture, without having experienced an injury.” ?? While osteoporosis is most commonly seen in women over age 50, younger people and men are also affected. Early symptoms can include increased pain with walking accompanied by redness and swelling on the top of the foot. “Oftentimes patients don’t seek treatment for their symptoms for weeks or even months, thinking the pain will pass,” says Dr. Botek. “The best advice is, don’t ignore foot pain of any type. Early intervention can make all the difference in your treatment and recovery.” ??Foot and ankle surgeons are able to diagnose osteoporosis through bone densitometry tests, which measure calcium and mineral levels in the bones through lowdose radiation x-ray, or possibly through a routine x-ray. “This is why prevention and early intervention are key; women should make sure bone densitometry tests are part of their wellness examinations when indicated by their physicians,” Dr. Botek explains.??I f you are diagnosed with osteoporosis, it’s important to protect your feet from stress fractures. Wear shoes that provide support and cushioning, such as athletic running shoes, to provide extra shock absorption and protection. Custom orthotics may also be recommended to protect the foot from pressure and provide shock absorption, particularly during exercise. ??For more information on osteoporosis of the foot, visit the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons’ website, FootHealthFacts.org.

Celebrating Day of the Dead By Cinthia Rodriguez - El Observador remember when my mom would cook several traditional dishes and place them on a table decorated with candles, flowers and other food. It wasn't because we were having family over for dinner. It turns out that people celebrate Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) in different ways and my mom's is one of many. The table also had photos of family members who were no longer with us, like my grandfather. The table that can be described as a customary altar also had sweet bread and even beer. My

mom had told me the spirits of our family members would come and enjoy their favorite dishes and wash it down with a bottle of beer and enjoy dessert. She would pray and prepare everything by November 2, when Dia de los Muertos is celebrated. In other parts of Mexico and Latin America, families will travel to the cemetery, decorate the tombstone with cempasuchil flowers, have candles lit while they pray and tidy up the tombstone. Like my mom, they are making way for their loved ones to return to earth to visit them. As they all join for a colorful celebration that was once cel-

Although the Spanish viewed this practice as a pagan ritual it kept going and is now a very recognizable day throughout the Latino community. As the day gets closer, people prepare by setting up personal altars, decorating sugar skulls and in some cases people hold vigils at a cemetery. In the Bay Area you can celebrate Dia de los Muertos without traveling that far. Listed are the activities to help people join the celebration.
