E

sta semana dio inicio la 5ª Semana Binacional de la Salud, una semana que reúne esfuerzos de autoridades locales, gobiernos federales, agencias, organizaciones y vo luntarios. Estos días están destinados a actividades que ayuden a mejorar la salud de una de las poblaciones más desfavorecidas que vive en Estados Unidos: la población inmigrante.

La Semana Binacional de la salud, es una oportunidad para concientizar a nuestra gente, a los trabajadores y sus familias que tanto apoyo necesitan. Porque ellos llegaron a este país con objetivos, motivaciones y con sueños que pueden estropearse sino hacen conciencia de que además de trabajar también hay que atender, prevenir y cuidar su salud.

Ellos trabajan largas jornadas, expuestos al sol, a fertilizantes, químicos, trabajos que requieren de fuerzas que muchas veces no tienen por cambios que se han visto en la necesidad de enfrentar, como el clima, la alimentación, el estrés y principalmente hábitos de vida distintos a los que acostumbraban en sus lugares de origen.

Aquí en California, en la zona del Valle de Salinas, mundialmente conocida por la producción de alimentos, existen miles de trabajadores agrícolas quienes cosechan con sus propias manos, que van directo a las mesas de millones de familias estadounidenses.

Pensando en ellos, hoy en día existen programas que, desde donde nos encontremos tenemos que apoyar, porque son ellos los que apoyan a la economía de ambos países y por eso debemos unir esfuerzos.

Este es un mes muy importante en el que estamos trabajando todos los consulados con un solo objetivo, el de trabajar en forma conjunta en la Semana Binacional de Salud, una semana que se ha creado para hacer conciencia en nuestra gente, hacerles saber que las consecuencias de no atenderse, pueden ser costosas e irreversibles.

A diario, por el contacto con nuestra gente, he sido testigo de rostros agotados, que en muchas ocasiones reflejan más edad de la que

Por tal motivo, todos estamos buscando la forma de llegar a los lugares en los que están los trabajadores, para que mediante activid a d e s educativas y de promoción de la salud sepan la importancia de prev e n i r enfermedades y de cuidar su salud.

Pero algo importante que no puedo dejar de mencionar, es cómo hacer y a donde acudir si nuestra comunidad se encuentra en desventaja en cuanto a cobertura médica. Muchos de nuestros trabajadores sufren por no tener un seguro médico. No tienen los servicios necesarios de salud y los resultados se reflejan en una comunidad pobre en

salud.

Debido a este hecho es que es muy importante esta Semana Binacional de Salud, porque nosotros como autoridades, en conjunto con las autoridades locales del departamento de salud, trabajamos en este tipo de programas que aseguren las condiciones mínimas de vida aceptables a nuestra comunidad.

Dentro de las actividades que incluye la Semana Binacional de Salud se contemplan hoy en día, eventos familiares en los que se ofrecen consultas médicas gratuitas, así como de detección y prevención, todas las personas que asisten a estas actividades obtienen información impresa de muchos problemas de salud que afectan a nuestra comunidad como enfermedades de transmisión sexual, embarazos no planeados, diabetes, obesidad hipertensión arterial, etc.

Las estadísticas pueden darnos indicativos alentadores o desalentadores, pero creo que lo más importante es tener conciencia de que las decisiones políticas pueden tomarse en Washington frente a temas como el migratorio, sin embargo el deber de todos nosotros es asegurarnos de mantener una comunidad sana, ya que nuestros trabajadores son una parte muy importante para ambas economías y además gracias a ellos hay gente que trabaja el campo, los servicios, las construcciones y mucho mas áreas.

s our nation being damaged in any manner by those who continuously attack the personhood of the 44th President of the United States with falsehoods? His recent election made history, both in the world and in this nation. An overview of his campaign during 2008 reveals that those who supported his successful political campaign managed to change American politics forever by using the latest information technology techniques to raise $780 million in campaign contributions from the people. The average amount was $109, which indicates that the American public supported him and his team.

This fact is a very strong indication that the people had more to do with his election than did corporate special interests (both unions and corporations) who contribute very large political donations of $5,000 or more.

So the outcome was that registered voters elected the first American president whose heritage included both African and European components. In addition, his Kenyan father left so his Anglo mother was obliged to raise him as a single parent with the assistance of his Anglo grandparents.

Barack Hussein Obama was exposed during his formative years to the Muslim ethos, but remained a Christian. This exposure to the Muslim faith must be very useful today when the major threats to world peace and our national safety emanates from Muslim Jihadists (Al Qaeda and Taliban extremists) whose fanatical objective is

to eliminate anyone who is not a Muslim.

And let us not forget that President Obama experienced much as a community organizer in the low income communities of Chicago, whose populations are predominantly African American.

Then there is the reality that President Obama is a former professor of constitutional law at the University of Chicago, which is a well-respected accredited institution.

This President has the thoughtful habit of looking at all perspectives of any situation being addressed. He seeks and evaluates all the advice and counsel from others and from history before making a decision, which becomes public policy.

President Obama communicates to all often, and is engaged and accessible. What a contrast to the recorded acts of the prior Republican Bush administration, which neglected many domestic issues while looking the other way when major financial institutions were making very risky investments with those dishonestly valued ‘derivatives’.

It is disquieting to experience the major mainstream media’s habit of providing extensive press coverage to those who are obviously racists, bigots, or just plain ignorant of our national norms of respect and acceptable social behavior.

Why was an objectionable Internet survey on Facebook allowed to happen? Where were those accountable for accepted levels of decency and responsibility? Does the quest for higher ratings paralyze their judgment? Those who promul-

gated that survey abused the American constitutional ideal of ‘Freedom of Speech’. It is simply as wrong to ask the question about ‘killing the President’ as it is to scream FIRE in a crowded theater.

Those ultra-conservatives who are racist, bigots, and prejudicial need to know that they have the freedom of thought, but not the freedom of very public expression of those inappropriate thoughts. The Secret Service needs to pursue their investigation and publicly reveal who perpetrated that survey, including those Facebook officials who were not reasonable stewards of their public responsibilities.

Some individuals need to learn that when their opinion is needed, the community will ask for it. Others need to understand that theirs is not the only opinion that prevails. And too many who are members of the silent majority, do care, but do not express their deep felt sentiments.

President Barack Hussein Obama was elected fair and square using the established political systems. Today many need to accept this election process outcome. It is essential for our world super power interests that we all express our thoughts about him and his public policy agenda in a behavioral manner that conveys our respect, honor and acceptance of him as our nation’s legitimately elected leader and President.

All must demonstrate acceptance, respect and honor the Office of the President of the United States of America.Δ

s health care reform bills wind their way through the labyrinth of Congressional committees, caucuses, lobbyist meals at five star dining rooms, district office forums, tea bag rants and secret deal making with the very industry any reform must regulate, the American public might ask: What kind of health insurance do members of Congress have?

Our nation’s “Masters of Legislation” have a conveniently located health clinic right in the Capitol, called the Office of the Attending Physician, staffed by doctors, nurses, technicians, a pharmacy, chiropractor and physical therapist (for those painful golf injuries). In addition to assigned staff, on-call specialists are available, as well as treatment or surgery at veteran’s and university hospitals throughout the nation. The clinic is initially funded by $3 million out of the U.S. Navy medical budget, with additional funds available. Medical staff report, “The services are the best on the planet.” And so they should be for those charged with legislating our nation.

So what do the members of Congress pay for their health care?

Would you believe: $503 per year? Yes, per year! And some do not even pay that amount, though they are not refused treatment for failing to pay the premium or for pre-existing conditions. The legislators also have a choice of ten health plans for their families, with the public paying 2/3 of the premiums, while they pay one-third.

Americans might ponder this information as they pay their premiums for health insurance. Further questions: Is your insurance tied to your job? What happens when you lose your job, the company decides to not offer coverage, or you retire? Questions for the 60 million uninsured Americans: Are you healthy enough to obtain health insurance, and if so, can you afford it? Can any of us afford not to have health insurance?

The truth is we are biological beings—at risk of injury or illness throughout our lives, and in the end, life is a terminal condition we cannot escape. We all need health care from prenatal to end of life. Responsible governance demands of an actual health care system of illness prevention (immunizations), health promotion (smoking cessation) and treatment alternatives so that we can all live the healthiest life possible.

A state of well being for our nation must ensure health care for everyone, not just the wealthy, the presently employed or healthy, corporate CEOs. Everyone includes: the teacher, nurse, police officer, auto worker, bus driver, chef; but also the dishwasher with a persistent cold, the child care provider who needs an annual TB test, the woman who cannot survive another pregnancy, the coal miner coughing blood.

We all need health care, not health care insurance. The present morass of buying health insurance in order to pay for our health care treatment is an absurd multi-billion dollar misdirection toward obtaining what we need: doctors, nurses, diagnostic exams, and the occasional surgery. I know of no insurance salesperson, actuarial analyst, lobbyist or ad agency pitchman who can cure any illness. All they do is take our money to then tell our doctors why our premiums do not cover what ails us, creating evermore esoteric loopholes to deny coverage. Tell your Congressional representatives you want the same health plan that you are paying for them to have. If they say the nation cannot afford such health care for everyone, you will know them to be Masters of Hypocrisy.

This role model conference will be special for Founder and Director, Esau Herrera.

Herrera, a lawyer during the day and an Alum Rock School District trustee on his free time, will reap what was sown many years ago.

Some of this year’s role model speakers were former student attendees at prior conferences. But what makes Herrera burst with pride is two particular role model speakers; his son, Alejandro, and his daughter, Kiara.

What moves him to tears is that this conference will be a family affair, as his wife, Angelina, will also be among the stellar list of role models.

Eleven years ago, when Kiara was a 3rd grader and Alejandro a 6th grader, they first accompanied their father to a role model conference. They were the only youngsters wearing printed name badges, given to adult role models showing their profession and their college alma mater. Prophetically, Kiara’s name badge read “student, Santa Clara University Class of 2012.” Alejandro’s name badge was similar, with a different college listed.

Kiara, now a sophomore at SCU (class of 2012) and majoring in environmental sciences, will serve on the “Environmental Sciences/Industries” panel. Alejandro, a graduate of UC Santa Cruz and now in a combined Master’s degree/teacher credential program at UCSC, will be a panelist on the “Teacher/Counselor” panel. Angelina, a Xerox Corporation Vice President and recipient of Santa Clara County’s prestigious “Hispanic Portraits of Success” award, will serve on the “Business & Management” panel.

“If we can be role models for our kids and inspire them to their path of success, then we will have accomplished much in life,” said Herrera, himself a graduate of Alum Rock and East Side high schools. “And in reality, the students here are all our kids. Today, we’re planting dreams in their brains. Tomorrow, they will be our next role model speakers.”

O

ne of my priorities as a county supervisor is to promote healthy, peaceful and harmonious neighborhoods. Sometimes basic “neighbor to neighbor” communications break down and neighborhood peace— turns into neighborhood war. Imagine you bought a new home three years ago in a great neighborhood with wonderful and friendly neighbors. Now imagine that it is has become a nightmare for you. Over the three-year time frame your neighbor next door, who welcomed you warmly, has acquired cars for his two kids.

They park in front of your house, leaving no room for visitors to park and creating disturbances with loud music late into the night.

To add insult to injury, the neighbor’s dog is barking incessantly at any minor noise and you’re losing sleep.

You’ve tried talking to him. His answers have been less than cordial; “it’s a public street” or “You know how kids are”. The friendly smile that was there to greet you as a new neighbor has been replaced by glares and silence. You’ve called the city’s code enforcement department for help. They have investigated and determined there are no code

violations. In retaliation for your call, you suspect your neighbor is the one who has been littering your property and tagging your fence.

What can you do? Where do you turn?

The answer might be the Community Dispute Resolution service provided by the County’s Office of Human Relations. They provide a wide range of services, which include neighbor-to-neighbor disputes as well as entire neighborhood issues resolution.

They are trained specifically to handle situations where small things have escalated into larger fights and even court action. Their success lies not in resolving the dispute but in assisting the parties to achieve the resolution on their own.

It is key to keep talking with your neighbors and to maintain the attitude you had when you first moved in. If something comes up, don’t be afraid to talk to your neighbor about it. omar un vuelo local requiere como mĂ­nimo estar presente una hora antes, el vuelo de San JosĂŠ a Los Angeles tarda 1:15 minutos y luego si lleva equipaje tendrĂ­a que esperar lo que le resultarĂ­a casi tres horas de viaje por un equivalente mĂ­nimos de $138 dĂłlares y con suerte podrĂ­a agarrar alguna promociĂłn de descuento.

El proyecto del tren rĂĄpido estĂĄ enfocado precisamente en ahorrar tiempo y dinero. El tren va a 200 millas por hora (322 kph). SegĂşn las autoridades dice que un viaje de San JosĂŠ a Los Angeles tomarĂ­a 2 horas 21 minutos alguien por ahĂ­ dijo dos horas 9 minutos. Viajar en tren de

San JosĂŠ a San Francisco tomarĂ­a nada mĂĄs que 30 minutos.

Los ambientalistas dicen que el tren cuidarĂ­a el medio ambiente, menos gente manejando sus vehĂ­culos harĂ­a menos contaminante las carreteras. El proyecto del tren traerĂ­a oportunidades de trabajo y en tiempos de crisis invertir en estos grandes proyectos serĂ­a muy conveniente para el estado de California. Se estima que se crearĂ­an 600 mil Fuentes de trabajo en el rubro de la construcciĂłn y 450 mil empleos fijos una vez que el sistema sea construido.

TOLTEKAYOTL: The Indigenous Roots Exhibit

E

gypt has majestic displays such as Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs. In Latin America, we have many great works of art by various indigenous peoples. One of these groups of indigenous people is the TOLTEKAYOTL. As part of the Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations, San Jose City College is currently displaying an exhibit of approximately 1,700 pieces from the TOLTEKAYOTL. Mexican historian Luis Gova collected the pieces over several decades.

These pieces are on display thanks to the support from SJCC. The school has also officially founded Gova’s Inter Americas Center.

“This exhibit is a wonderful asset for the SJCC community and students. To highlight the indigenous roots during Latino Heritage Month allows us to appreciate art and the immigrant experiences that are behind the artifacts,” said San José City College President Michael Burke.

“This exhibit is very rich and the collection is incredible. I am truly surprised by these artifacts,” added San Jose Mexican Consul General David Figueroa. “This exhibit is a great way to celebrate Mexico’s bicentennial anniversary.”

or primera vez en la ciudad de Mountain View se llevará a cabo un gran evento netamente latino. Si bien esta ciudad se caracteriza por celebrar el Festival de Arte y Vino los latinos tenemos lo nuestro.

La ciudad de Mountain View cuenta con casi un 20% de la población latina. Aunque a simple vista no se vea mucho latino, nosotros nos hacemos sentir cuando la Virgen de Guadalupe recorre cada 12 de diciembre las calles céntricas de esta ciudad, así como cuando cada domingo después de la misa recibimos la bendición del Padre Bob

Blanca Cinco es una héroe de la comunidad que por muchos años continúa trabajando en silencio organizando grandes eventos como estos.

Cinco es gestora de la Academia de Policía en español, fue la promotora para que los latinos lleven cursos de Prevención de Desastres, CERT, también en español y gran defensora para que nuestra genta tengan una voz en esta ciudad, ella es líder de este gran proyecto que por primera vez se organiza en esta ciudad.

“From the cultural point of view the exhibit follows the teachings of the Toltec Elders, Huehuetlatoli. Tlapiliztly is a Nauhatl word that means “This is what belongs to us, what we must preserve”. All of the contents of the exhibit contain art, cultural and historical forms that all Latinos must preserve to stay in touch with their Indigenous Roots,” stated Gova.

The Indigenous Roots Exhibit and the rest of the Inter Americas Center collections have been developed by a large group of volunteers with the assistance of Mr. Gova.

The Inter Americas Center is leading organization dedicated to the preservation, dissemination, and advancement of the Latino culture in the Bay Area.

For many years the Center has produced historical, artistic and educational materials from instructional booklets, trainings, hands-on workshops to museum exhibits.

The exhibit is free and is open to the public from Tuesday through Saturday 10 am to 4 pm at San Jose City College located at 2100 Moorpark Avenue. n el marco de la celebración de la Semana Binacional de la Salud el Condado de Santa Clara celebró con éxito la semana dedicada a educar y a atender consultas gratuitas en las diferentes ferias de salud. Este evento es uno de los proyectos internacionales para mejorar la salud y el bienestar de los inmigrantes necesitados de origen latinoamericano que viven en Estados Unidos, Canadá y México. Se estima en este evento se sirve a más de 10,000 hispanos y sus respectivas familias. En la foto el Cónsul General de México David Figueroa dando por inaugurado la 5ta. eople usually cut a ribbon to celebrate the grand opening of a building. The Alum Rock Union School District (ARSD) had a similar reason to celebrate. Arbuckle, Chavez, Cureton, Dorsa, Hubbard Elementary Schools, and Mathson Middle School were improved by the completion of Measure G. In February of 2008, the ARSD informed the community of how it needed to improve the facilities but lacked funds. An assessment was done and with support from the community, the Board of

Trustees took action to place a general obligation bond measure on the June 2008 ballot to fund the improvements.

The request was supported; Measure G was approved with more than a 79% yes vote. The Measure G ribbon cutting celebration was held at Chavez Elementary this past Tuesday and the bond managers, architects, and construction partners were acknowledged. Parents, teachers, and students were also present during the celebration. Six different ribbons were cut.

12th Annual Walk to End Domestic Violence

AKLAND - Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-Oakland) convened a roundtable meeting on Saturday, October 3, 2009 with U.S. Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis and a small group of local civic, community, education, labor and business leaders to discuss green job creation, the emerging green economy, workforce, education and healthcare reform in the Ninth Congressional District.

During the roundtable, Congresswoman Lee and Secretary Solis were briefed on how funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) is helping to bolster the local economy, the impact it is having in underserved communities and the effect the funding is having on green job development and the educational system.

“Through the Recovery Act, we have provided more than $500 million in grants to support projects-such as those in California’s ninth Congressional District-which open opportunities to workers and help them become an integral part of the nation’s 21st Century clean energy economy,” said Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis.

he message accompanying this year’s annual walk reminds people that domestic violence can happen to anyone. The City of San Jose’s Family/Domestic Violence Advisory Board hosted the 12th Annual Walk last Friday.

Participants and speakers met at San Jose City Hall’s Plaza, where a victims’ tribute took place and a special survivor of domestic violence shared her story.

The victims that were remembered were all victims of domestic violence and of Asian descent. A single rose was placed on a chair to remember them.

A survivor of domestic violence also shared her story. She recalled being abused since childhood and has finally realized that she wanted her daughter to be proud of her and that meant being violent free.

Actress, author and also survivor of domestic violence, Robin Givens, was the featured speaker of the event. Her talk with the audience included her views on celebrity scandals re-

lated to domestic violence and how speaking is therapeutic.

Givens and all the participants of this year’s walk went on a 1.3 mile walk around downtown San Jose. A lunch soon followed, as well as a resource fair in the San Jose City Hall Rotunda.

In the rotunda a signing of memoir, “Grace Will Lead me Home,” was also being held.

The walk was open to the public and was sponsored by the

City of San Jose, County of Santa Clara, San Jose Police Officers Association, Santa Clara County Cities Association, Paradise Sweet Balloons and Gifts, and NBC Bay Area 11.

Llegaron las vacunas contra la gripe H1N1 Distrito Escolar Unificado dará vacunas gratuitas Por Rosario Vital - El Observador

E

sta semana la comunidad ha recibido en medio de una gran preocupación las buenas noticias. Ya llegó un primer lote de vacunas al Condado de Santa Clara y por el otro lado el Distrito Escolar Unificado de San José (SJUSD) anunció que vacunará gratuitamente a sus 32 mil estudiantes que componen su distrito.

Han llegado aproximadamente 14,000 dosis de esta vacuna en forma de aerosol nasal que se va a entregar a los proveedores de servicios médicos públicos y privados en el condado, así como al Departamento de Salud Pública.

A finales de octubre o a principios de noviembre, más de 200,000 dosis de vacuna se espera que esté disponible en el Condado de Santa Clara.

Vacuna gratis para escolares “Porque nos preocupamos en nues tros estudiantes, porque deseamos que se mantengan saludables y porque no queremos que falten a las clases, la directiva ha decidido dar vacunas, claro siempre con la autorización de los padres”,

dijo a El Observador, el Jorge Gonzalez, Miembro de la Mesa Directiva del SJUSD. Ahora los padres de familia ya no tendrán excusas para no vacunar a sus menores. Tal como se había reportado en una visita que El Observador hizo a la Escuela Primaria Anne Darling, localizada en el Este de San José los padres expresaron su preocupación sobre el costo de las vacunas.

González explicó que a través de las escuelas serán informados oportunamente sobre cómo y cuándo se iniciará el proceso de vacunación.

“Las vacunas también incluyen a los maestros que están cerca a los niños”, indicó la autoridad educativa.

Por su parte las autoridades de salud del Condado de Santa Clara indicaron que el el primer envío de la vacuna se presenta en forma de aerosol nasal, no todos pueden recibirlo. Sólo las personas sanas entre las edades de 2 y 49 años pueden recibir la vacuna nasal. Los Centros para el Control y la Prevención de Enfermedades (CDC) y el Departamento de Salud de California han identificado en niños sanos entre las edades de 2 años y 10 años de edad como una prioridad.

La vacuna nasal no debe administrarse a: Niños menores de 2 años de edad Adultos de 50 años de edad y más de Las personas con una condición médica que los coloca en alto riesgo de complicaciones de la gripe y las personas con enfermedades que debilitan su sistema inmune Los niños menores de 5 años de edad con antecedentes de sibilancias recurrentes Los niños o adolescentes que reciben aspirina Las personas con historia de síndrome de Guillain-Barré, un trastorno poco frecuente del sistema nervioso, Las mujeres embarazadas Las personas que tienen una alergia severa a los huevos de pollo o que son alérgicas a cualquiera de los componentes de la vacuna nasal.

Basándose en las recomendaciones de los CDC, una vez que la demanda de la vacuna para las personas con mayor riesgo de enfermedad o de complicaciones se haya cumplido, el Departamento de Salud Pública y los proveedores locales podrán ofrecer la vacuna a todos los demás que lo deseen. Δ

Virgen del Pilar “Patrona de la Hispanidad” Por Mario Jiménez Castillo El Observador

C

orría el año 40 de nuestra era cuando el apóstol Santiago, se encontraba predicando en la Hispania pagana, en Zaragoza, en las riberas del río Ebro. En ese sitio Santiago predicaba día y noche, entonces en la madrugada del 2 de enero, él y sus acompañantes, escucharon voces angelicales que cantaban “Ave, María, gratia plena” y de repente vieron aparecer a la “Madre de Cristo”, de pie, sobre un pilar de mármol. La Virgen le dijo al apóstol Santiago que se construyera allí una iglesia en cuyo altar estaría el pilar en el cuál ella posó de pie y éste permanecería en el mismo sitio, hasta el final de los tiempos.

Fue así como la iglesia fue construida, aún así, la controversial aparición ha sido defendida por unos y refutada por otros. La Virgen del Pilar es una de las advocaciones marianas que cuenta

con el mayor número de milagros. Ya en el año 1438 se escribía un libro de milagros atribuidos a ella. Muchos fieles afirman haber sido receptores de hechos milagrosos obrados por la Virgen del Pilar.

Uno de los milagros pilaristas más afamados, es el milagro del Cojo de Calanda, que data de 1640. Tratándose de un hombre a quien le amputaron una pierna. Tiempo más tarde el hombre soñó que visitaba la basílica de la Virgen del Pilar y la pierna sanada volvió a su sitio.

tigos de dicho milagro, por tal motivo en la pared de la basílica existe un cuadro recordando aquel portentoso milagro. Fue el Papa Clemente XII quien señaló la fecha del “12 de octubre para la festividad de la Virgen del Pilar”, fecha que coincide con la celebración del día del descubrimiento de América. Es hermoso saber que fue “una nación hispana” la que escogió la Virgen María para aparecerse por primera vez y así difundir su devoción.
