Trabajadores de Kaiser protestan por despidos

l pasado 16 de septiembre cientos de trabajadores de Kaiser Permantente protestaron en las afueras de el hospital localizado en Santa Teresa en San José. Ellos protestan por anuncio que hizo Kaiser Permamente al querer reducir más de 1,800 empleos en todo el estado, a pesar de los excelentes resultados financieros y el alto nivel de atención que ofrecen los trabajadores de Kaiser indica el sindicato. A mediados de agosto, el Kaiser anunció que los ingresos

netos para el trimestre fueron de $ 620 millones, casi el doble del segundo trimestre del año pasado y muy por encima de sus propias proyecciones. Pocos días después, Kaiser anunció su intención de eliminar 1,350 puestos de SEIU UHW en todo el estado - y con conocimiento de muchos de nues tros miembros por el nombre que sus posiciones fueron en la lista. Este es el caso de Miguel García quien trabaja en limpieza y está preocupado porque en dos semanas perdería el trabajo. “Nos negamos a aceptar que el hospital no tiene dinero cuando efectiva-

mente si lo tiene”. En un comunicado de prensa, las autoridades de Kaiser Permanente expresaron que se han tomado varias medidas para ayudar a administrar los gastos y mantener el cuidado de sus miembros y sus clientes. Pero con la situación económica ahora enfrenta desafíos. Por esta razón tomó la difícil decisión de eliminar a un número de posiciones representadas en el Norte de Cali fornia. Cada uno de los posiciones afectados han sido evaluadas cuidadosamente para que no haya ningún efecto negativo en el servicio a sus pacientes.

hen one considers all that is involved in having an economy that benefits all, a wholistic approach is a requirement. Identifying the economic theory being applied helps the public understand what is going on. Time is a factor. There is a need to gather factual information, which is then used to formulate public policy that benefits all stakeholders. Legislation and regulation is needed to ensure that our captains of industry are guiding their corporations in a manner that produces the greatest good for the nation. Corporations must earn profits while providing employment for the labor force. There is a need to constantly monitor all financial activities in order to detect fraud, profiteering, waste, ineffectiveness and other negative consequences. This past summer was spent dealing with the need to develop a comprehensive health care plan to create a seamless program of health insurance coverage, which provides for all. It was only when all the stakeholders engaged were identified that it became possible to propose a framework of legislation that built on what works now. However, if we are to provide comprehensive health care insurance for all, we must formulate an economy that provides income, if not employment, for all. What is required is the placement of money in the hands of consumers who become empowered to make choices

when purchasing anything needed, including health care insurance. When our financial industry tanked, so did consumerism allegedly because each individual became more thoughtful and frugal as a consumer. Recently credit card companies which have taken steps to raise their interest rates and charge fees for every possible service provided, even the use of an ATM, are constricting consumerism. The American consumer economy has been crippled by the prior fiscal policies of this nation. The Obama administration would do well to analyze the current practices of the entire financial industry so as to know where consumers are being abused, exploited or neglected. There are too many financial industry executive leaders who are totally committed to profiteering without consideration of the several hundred millions of consumers who make up this most powerful economic engine: The American Consumer Economy. Another major financial meltdown must be prevented if America is to remain a global superpower. Why is all this important to the average citizen? Well this stagnant economy, which results in high unemployment levels, was caused by faulty fiscal public policy. Neither the American people nor their elected officials are facing the current reality that this recession presents. Past public policy permitted manufacturing to

go offshore with the outcome that ordinary Americans have no local jobs. The main challenge to be faced by the Obama Administration and which must be addressed is the loss of competition in too many sectors of the global economy’s markets. One major challenge is the loss of America’s manufacturing capability, which provides well paying jobs to its labor force. Another major challenge is to discover new ways to provide economic support to the unemployed. Poverty levels are increasing. Today the requirement to be successfully competitive requires high levels of automation and robotics, lower corporate taxes, wages dropped to the level of those prevailing offshore, and relief from the high costs of employee health care insurances. Today there is no comprehensive political discussion about any of these essential basic issues, which are the proper objective of public policy affecting everyone. Until the Obama Administration begins its due diligence on these issues dealing with these economic matters, there will be no recovery from this recession. The outcome is already evident: too many low income wage earners simply have no work providing incomes which enables them to participate as American consumers with a re-envirgorated vision of their American Dream. This stagnant economy needs wholistic attention addressed to its basic foundations.Δ

l 24 de julio a la altura de la 3020 de Alum Rock la comunidad estaba de fiesta. Una nueva tienda â&#x20AC;&#x153;Goodwillâ&#x20AC;? se habĂa inaugurado, estrenando una de las tiendas mĂĄs concurridas en el Este de San JosĂŠ. La madrugada del 14 de septiembre un incendio de tres alarmas consumiĂł los 15 mil pies cuadrados que comprendĂa esta tienda que contaba con novedosos ambientes, sistema computarizado, servicio de internet gratuito ademĂĄs de una zona con ropa exclusiva a precios increĂbles. El fuego movilizĂł a mĂĄs de 60 bomberos quienes controlaron el incendio pasado las 10:40 de la maĂąana. SegĂşn informa el Departamento de Bomberos recibieron una llamada como a las 3 de la maĂąana sobre un incendio. El fuego arrasĂł con la tienda y dejĂł en cenizas el almacen y todas las ĂĄreas de la tienda. Apenas se podĂa visualizar una prenda

en las esquinas de la tienda que durĂł exactamente un mes y 20 dĂas al servicio de la comunidad. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A penas tenĂamos inventariado productos por el orden de los $80 mil dĂłlares. Era la quinta tienda mĂĄs concurridaâ&#x20AC;?, dijo el Presidente de Goodwill, Michael Fox. Fox habĂa comentado a EO que durante el primer fin de semana la tienda habĂa generado $45 mil dĂłlares en ventas. he events of September 11, 2001 led many people to feel compassion towards others throughout the country and the world. People that would otherwise not want anything to do with others that were different from them suddenly found themselves lending a helping had to those in need. Race was not an issue. In April of this year, President Obama signed the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act. The bill officially recognized September 11 as a National Day of Service and Remembrance. The day is intended to remind individuals that their fate and that of the United States is inherently tied. Service projects marking the eight-year anniversary of 9/11 took place in all 50 states, ranging from food drives and home repairs to neighborhood cleanups and disaster preparation activities. In many areas, volunteers honored veterans, soldiers, or first responders by collecting donations, assembling care packages, and writing thank you letters. In San Jose, Sacred Heart Community Service did its part to serve the community by creating a new program called La Mesa Verde. The program is a partnership between local busi-

nesses, schools, faith communities, and our low-income neighbors and provides all the materials to plant raisedbed, organic gardens in the yards of low-income families. “So far today we have built 18 gardens,” said Todd Madigan, director of development and communications at Sacred Heart. “We want people be able to grow their own food so that they could eat it and share it with their neighbors. Hopefully they will have some left over and share it with Sacred Heart.” Over 150 volunteers participated in this program. Many of them were happy with the results. Some said the boxes were well designed, while others said the land was easy to work with. The seeds for these vegetables will be planted on September 26. Mayor Chuck Reed praised Sacred Heart for their work and said, “There is no better community service organization in San Jose than Sacred Heart.” Sacred Heart will continue its work and hopes that more people will come forward and volunteer for this project. “We hope to have built 100 of these gardens by the end of this year,” stated Madigan. However, the organization still needs extra equip ment to complete this task. This equipment includes gloves, drills, hoes, rakes, shovels and a wheelbarrow. Community Leaders Reject Tax or Ban on Carryout Bags, Urge Recycling Instead

wenty three community leaders are urging San Jose and area cities to reject a proposed 25 cent tax or ban on plastic and/or paper carryout bags. Academic, business, political and taxpayer representatives call the proposal a new shoppers’ tax and are voicing support for expanded plastic bag recycling, public education and increased litter clean-ups. “We encourage the Santa Clara County Board and other municipalities to support Californians new plastic bag recycling law (AB 2449) before arbitrarily enacting plastic bag

bans or taxes that will hurt anyone who shops at any type of store without benefiting the environment,” community leaders stated in their letter to area officials. We know from experience that education and convenient collection points motivate consumers to recycle. San Jose’s proposed bag tax penalizes consumers, does nothing to promote recycling and won’t reduce litter. The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Silicon Valley also has expressed its opposition to the new tax or ban on bags.

Honda Promises to Work on Healthcare Reform By Osvaldo Castillo El Observador

he healthcare issue has been debated at town hall meetings throughout the country all summer long. For the most part, the participants of these meetings have been loud, rude and obnoxious. They have interrupted elected officials and depicted President Barack Obama as Hitler. Fortunately, that was not the case on Sunday, September 13, as Congressman Mike Honda (15th District) held a healthcare town hall meeting at Santa Clara University. “We have been dealing with this issue for over 50 years now,” Honda said. “It is time for this country to make sure that everyone has some form of health insurance.” Honda said that he and the members of Congress will be working on a bill that will drive the cost of healthcare down and create competition. He also said that companies will not be able to deny coverage to individuals due to pre-existing conditions or because they had lost their jobs. “If this bill passes, people will receive health insurance from their companies because it will be against the law not to have any form of health insurance,” Honda said. According to Honda’s office, in 2007, 60 percent of U.S. bankruptcies that were filed were a result of high medical costs. In the next ten years, the number of Americans without health insurance will reach 61 million. Honda’s own district already has 72,000 residents without health insurance. “The U.S. spends twice as much money on health insurance as any other industrialized nation, but we have worse results,” Honda said. “All we see is a continued rise in premiums.” Aside from a few hecklers, the town hall meeting was full of people who believed the public option was necessary. They asked Honda what sort of coverage they could expect to receive and if all the Democrats were on board to pass the bill. Guadalupe Rodriguez, a resident of Honda Congressional district, asked if the healthcare package would cover women’s reproductive healthcare. However, Honda said that is an issue that is still being discussed. According the Web site, healthcare.barackobama.com, the healthcare plan that is in the works will provide more security and stability to those who have health insurance. It will provide insurance to those who don’t. And it will slow the growth of health care costs for families, businesses, and government. It’s a plan that asks everyone to take responsibility for meeting this challenge - not just government and insurance companies, but employers and individuals. And it’s a plan that incorporates ideas from Senators and Congressmen, from both Democrats and Republicans. n septiembre hay mucho que celebrar. Las fiestas patrias de México, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala, Costa Rica. Estas festividades se convierten en la celebración más esperada en los Estados Unidos; el “Mes de la Herencia Hispana” . A esta gran celebración a nivel local se suma el tradicional Festival del Mariachi. Este año el 18vo Festival del Mariachi que pronto se inicia el 20 de septiembre con una gran fiesta en el Discovery Museum culmina con broche de oro el próximo domingo 27 de septiembre a las 8pm con la presentación de Carlos Santana a lado de Los Lobos y Little Joe con un tributo especial dedicado a “César Chávez” en su concierto que tendrá lugar en el HP Pavillion de San José localizado 525 W. Santa Clara St San Jose, CA 95113 (ver calendario). Este año El Festival del Mariachi honra a los “Héroes de Nuestra Herencia”. En sus años de existencia por primera vez dedica esta celebración a un gran líder sindical que movilizó a campesinos y que transcendió por su labor, esfuerzo y sacrificio. Nos referimos a César Chávez. En este festival se exhibirá desde una película y por primera vez se hará un taller especial de comida denominado “Comida para el Corazón y el Alma”. Además de los tradicionales talleres programados para jóvenes a cargo de expertos mariachis, nuevamente llega la Feria de mariachis. éctor Gómez pisó en noviembre de 1988 el suelo estadounidense para presenciar un partido de fútbol americano. Pero jamás imaginó quedarse toda su vida en este país. Por esas situaciones de oportunidad que pocas se presentan en la vida llegó en un momento en que el país estaba atravesando por el proceso de amnistía, permitiendo a miles de indocumentados legalizarse. Gomez se las jugó del todo por el todo y como todos llegó con unos cuantos centavos en el bolsillo. A este intrépido hombre natural de Autlán de Navarro, Jalisco, México la suerte le acompañó. Durante su visista a la ciudad de Glendale, CA,apostó en una carrera de caballos y apostó por el menos favorito y ¿qué creen?, ganó la apuesta y por su puesto el dinero. “Con ese dinero decidí tramitar mis documentos y así logré arreglar mi estadía en muy corto tiempo”. Pero algunos dirán, que suerte la de este hombre así cualquiera llega lejos. Gómez regularizó sus documentos pero sabía muy poco de ingles y eso era básico para poder trabajar, sobrevivir y triunfar si uno desea. Así que su primer trabajo fue en la cadena de restaurantes Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC). Para cocinar no se tenía que hablar, así que aprendió a preparar los pollos más deliciciosos, acompañados de sus papitas doradas y ensaladas. Gómez no entendía casi nada a sus compañeros de trabajo, a veces tenía que leerle los labios para entenderles un poco. Pero también tenía amigos que escuchaban los Bukis y hablaban todo el tiempo español y él no quiso seguir sus pasos. A Gómez le interesaba aprender más, porque la única manera de salir adelante era aprendiendo ingles. No se pudo comprar un popular programa de ingles muy promocionado en ese entonces. “Conseguí un CD y texto de $10 porque no podía pagar más. También escuchaba música y radio en ingles la única manera de aprender”, recuerda con orgullo el hombre mexicano. Al final de su turno de trabajo se le presentó la oportunidad de limpiar el restaurante. “Lo hice para ganar horas extras”, luego fue encargado de contar el dinero al final del día y finalmente comenzó a hacer inventario. En corto tiempo y producto de su gran esfuerzo se hizo asistente del administrador y en dos meses se convirtió en administrador. El joven trabajó de local en local, administró sucursales en San Ramón, Dublin, Walnut Creek, Newark, Hayward, Modesto. Lo cierto es que el local que administraba elevaba increiblemente las ventas. Fue tan exitoso su trabajo que hizo de una tienda de Oakland como la número UNO luego que ésta andaba descuidada. Gómez fue ganador de importantes reconocimientos a nivel corporativo. Los éxitos llegaron unos tras otros, pero no de la noche a la mañana. Esto significó muchas horas fuera de casa . “Siempre quise superarme, si te piden tres cosas recuerda que puedes hacer cuatro”, dice este personaje ejemplar. En los últimos 10 años, el hombre de Jalisco fue acumulando éxito tras éxito. Desde hace dos años y medio fue nombrado Director Regional de KFC que surpervisa a cuatro estados que son: Utah, Washington, Colorado y California. Gómez es el único latino entre la Mesa Directiva de la Corporación y toma grandes decisiones para el futuro de esta cadena de restaurantes. Gómez se sigue levantando muy temprano para atender a conferencias telefónicas e incluso cuenta que el año pasado se la pasó 212 días en el avión. El actual Director Regional no sabía que iba a llegar tan lejos. “Algo si sabía que no iba a hacer, era limpiar casas”. Esto es un ejemplo de superación de miles de inmigrantes que empiezan desde abajo y alcanzan posiciones ejecutivas donde estamos orgullosos de compartir. “Los latinos podemos ser los mejores arquitectos, doctores porque somos excelentes trabajadores, hay que ser mejor que los demás y claro que podemos”, concluye Héctor. ¡Héctor gracias por compartir tu historia y gracias por representarnos a los latinos en tus decisiones ejecutivas!.

The Artsy Side of Evergreen College

he campus of Evergreen College (EVC) can now add a Center for the Arts on their maps. The center refers to the new theater that can seat 400 people and the new classrooms. The students can take anything from jewelry sculpture, to beginning drawing, 3-D design, and digital media. Along with the typical classes that are offered, new additions were made possible because of the new center. There are painting studios as well as practice rooms with pianos and even dedicated dance studios; all a first for EVC. EVC is celebrating the grand opening of the center with a week-long festival. Articulate! will begin on September 21 and run through September 26, 2009. The festival of global arts and cultures will showcase the many programs EVC has to offer. San Jose State University Write to Protest

tudents for Quality Education held a march to deliver letters on Wednesday at San Jose State University and to protest the budget cuts that students all across California are facing. Letters written by students expressing how they feel and how they are being affected by the budget cuts were delivered. With different picket signs and flyers, the students started their march across the Tommy

Smith and John Carlos statues on campus and marched past the Event Center, through the Spartan Complex corridor and paused at Tower Lawn, only to finish their march in front of the Administration Building; were the letters were delivered. Different chants were heard throughout the march and they will continue to protest. The next rally will be held on the third furlough day of the semester, September 22, 2009.

The Fire Department of San Jose came together with community members to remember those who served and gave their lives. A flag held together by two fire trucks waved in the air as different people went to the podium to shared personal stories. A feeling of mourning was present, but dealt with in a noble manner. A wreath was placed next to the bell at San Jose’s first fire station and after, the bell rung to commemorate the fallen fire fighters of 9/11. It is clear that that day changed the nation, and we will continue to remember.

Alum Rock Counseling Center’s Turning Point Mentoring Program at Foothill Continuation High School matches over 35 high-risk students (ages 14-18) with highly trained mentors, who will assist youth to develop strategies, tools, and resources to overcome their personal and academic barriers and achieve individualized goals.

ith all the stress of work (or lack there off) and other everyday life circumstances, it has become very difficult for many Americans to stay fit and healthy. Obesity rates have hit 63 percent and the diabetes rates continue to climb. These unhealthy statistics are the driving force behind the 5th Annual Healthy Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Day. The event was held on Saturday, September 12, at the Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Discovery Museum of San Jose and was put together by Assembly member Joe Coto, 23rd Assembly District. Cotoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s office even gave out free admission to up five family members. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We want to educate parents and their children about the importance of staying healthy by eating right and by exercising,â&#x20AC;? said Lorraine Guerin, District Director for Assemblymember Coto. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We want the children to learn while they are still young and to pledge to stay healthy.â&#x20AC;? The children also learned about the impor-

tance of good hygiene from Kaiser Permanente, one of the many agencies involved in the event. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Kaiser is here to show the children how to properly take care of themselves.â&#x20AC;? Guerin said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They also told them about the importance of getting the proper amount of sleep.â&#x20AC;? Other agencies that were involved with the event include: Mt. Diablo Dental Health Society, Sports Basement, Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Health Initiative, Partnership for Prescription Assistance, Beverly Burbank Lions and VSP Vision. â&#x20AC;&#x153;All these agencies provide the children with different ways to take care of themselves,â&#x20AC;? Guerin said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;VSP Vision is giving the children free vision test and the Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Dental Clinic is giving out free toothbrushes, dental floss and toothpaste.â&#x20AC;? Most children like to drink soda and other sweet drinks. Rethink Your Drink was there to provide information on drink alternatives. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It is important for children to know that there are other drinks other than soda out there,â&#x20AC;? Guerin said. Author Kymberli Brady was also at the event

Despite having several agencies volunteer their time for this event, Guerin said that it was not difficult at all to get everyone on board for the event. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Everyone was very excited and wanted to do their part in making sure this event was suc-

Las luces se encenderán a partir de las 8 de la noche con “El Tributo a los Héroes de Nuestra Herencia” a cargo de esta afamada cantante. Ghosts of the River Ghosts of the River is a shadow theater play that incorporates silhouetted, masked actors and live music along with Octavio Solís’ epic writing into a unique collection of ghost stories remembering those who have encountered the murky waters of the Rio Grande throughout time. This will be a bilingual play with Spanish/English translation provided through subtitles. MLS suspenderá partidos para Sudáfrica 2010 L

os Angeles, (Notimex).- Por primera vez en su historia, la Liga Mayor de Futbol de Estados Unidos (MLS por siglas en inglés) suspendería su calendario de juegos durante la Copa del Mundo Sudáfrica 2010. Esta liga en los últimos dos campeonatos organizados por la Federación Internacional de Futbol Asociación (FIFA) era la única en el mundo empecinada en continuar sus torneos locales, a diferencia de lo que hacen todas en el mundo. El anuncio fue revelado este día por el Comisionado de la Major League Soccer (MLS), Don Garber, quien confirmó que por primera vez en la historia de la liga habrá un

receso en la actividad. La fase de grupos del Mundial comprende de 48 partidos del total de 64 que tiene el torneo que iniciará el 11 de junio de 2010 en Sudáfrica. El último partido de la MLS previo al Mundial se jugará el 10 de junio y la MLS no programará ningún partido adicional hasta después de la culminación de la fase de grupos, el 25 de junio. Asimismo, planea no programar ningún partido de temorada regular en las fechas de semifinal y final de la Copa del Mundo. La temporada regular de la MLS 2010 se jugará nuevamente con una base de 30 partidos para cada equipo, seguido por la liguilla entre los ocho equipos clasificados.
