PUBLISHER’S LETTER
The Lazy Person’s Guide to a Dust-Free Home
W
hat better time than the Home & Garden issue to talk about housecleaning, right? While I don’t think I have oikophobia (an aversion to house cleaning), I may have a slight case of clutterphobia. Now, I know that clutterphobia is not a real word, but I would venture to say most of us have at least ONE room in our house that strikes fear in our hearts when we approach the task of cleaning or de-cluttering. According to the internet, one in four Americans have a clutter problem. The average home contains 300,000 items! Of course, having a messy room might be the result of any number of factors. You may be busy and have little time to clean or organize. You might have too much stuff (300,000!!). Or it could be the result of having young kids in the house. In my case, it’s a little bit of ergophobia, which I define as “the art of laziness.” If you have a lot of stuff in the attic or garage, this might indicate an inability to let go of the past. A cluttered bathroom might reveal body image issues. Clutter in the living room might suggest a hectic social life.

The workplace is one of the most interesting spots in the home in terms of psychology. Some people sort everything into folders and put the folders on shelves. Others mix up all the papers, pens, pencils, laptops, etc. If you have a cluttered desk, there is a high probability that your workplace doesn’t “look” very clean. But it’s also quite likely that you often have unusual and creative ideas! The key is figuring out how to apply my ergophobia to house cleaning, so I decided to find the ONE best cleaning tip that I could apply to my house. After an exhausting search on the internet (okay, more like 5 minutes because this letter was due half an hour ago) I found a great tip that fits perfectly into my bachelor lifestyle: walk around the house wearing fluffy socks to avoid dusting! WOW! What a great idea! With a 188 lb. dog who slobbers and sheds constantly, this could be a gamechanger! They say we’re supposed to take 10,000 steps a day for health reasons, so I figure I can get my exercise AND clean my house at the same time! I just hope I don’t develop canineoslipaphobia: the fear of being chased by dogs around a kitchen table while wearing socks on a freshly waxed floor.

At the beginning of the pandemic, Frederica saw a trend of slightly larger home designs as residents welcomed grown children and grandchildren for extended periods. Thoughts on how the living space would adapt both for an empty nest and an expanding family led to plans for additional living spaces with guest quarters on the property, bunk rooms for grandchildren, and retreats for home offices. In speaking with local builders in Frederica, there is a design shift in homes towards a more transitional style. “Exteriors still remain more traditional and timeless; however, the interiors are trending more towards a contemporary flair evoking a clean aesthetic with natural light and a relaxed feel,” explains Chris Carter of Carter Custom Homes. Brett Flanagan of Flanagan Development adds, “Open living spaces are still a huge trend; however, in our area, we are seeing a big focus on larger outdoor living spaces with all the features of a home: fireplaces, summer kitchen, brick

Sometimes abstract art can be misunderstood. Depending on the viewer’s interpretation, an abstract piece might appear as simply a wild splash of paint or a mass of blue or red color; to other observers, the painting may create a sense of energy or feeling of calm and tranquility. It all depends on the viewer’s interpretation. Abstract art is a great solution to enhance the atmosphere of a particular space in your home by unifying the elements in a room creating harmony and consistency. It’s also important to consider what your home means to you and what you want it to convey to your guests. Think about this for a moment. What do you want to say to people who come to your house? It is important to think about who you are and how you want to express yourself. Do you want your home to reflect beauty? Power? Happiness? Safety? Love? Nature? To help bring your expression to reality, works of art can be a great place to start. The semi-abstract piece I’ve called Nature in Abstraction creates possible illusions of nature, like ripples of water on a pond or floating lily pads. The colors and subject of the painting can help stimulate the viewer’s fond memories of a hike through the woods

environments. My art patrons often like my bird images, and there is no mystery as to why. Birds are non-controversial. Their colors, posture, and facial features can be pleasing to the eye. Thoughts of birds singing in the wild can give us hope and peace. The blue heron is very territorial and hence is a common subject in many backyards and ponds in our area. People often feel safe when viewing something familiar. In selecting art, you need to think about color. It is not only important to consider colors that work with the décor in your home, but how can color enhance how you feel? In “Blue Heron,” there are soft blues and splashes of yellow and gray. Blues can promote tranquility and reds excitement. Yellows exude a sense of something coming, expectation, or anticipation. Art is one of the most dynamic sources of Nature in Abstraction
non-verbal communication. You can live in a home with just the essentials, but adding art to your décor makes life more joyful. It creates an atmosphere that is interesting and instantly adds a splash of personality. Color, subject, size, and style are important factors that will influence your selection. The piece you choose should give you a good “vibe” since you will see it every day. A wealth of art in a wide variety of styles and media is available in several galleries on St. Simons Island. Gallery owners can help you with the exciting journey of selecting just the right piece for that special place. Art patrons are invited to browse my working studio and gallery during open hours. I paint at my easel daily and enjoy answering questions about my work. Commissions are welcome and a good way to help the homeowner get what exactly they want. Stop and Smell
A
lthough our local garden walks take place in April, childhood rhymes taught us that May is the month for flowers. Colorful floral crowns and May poles festooned with blooms are traditional ways to welcome the month on May Day, but it’s the Run for the Roses that gets the big spotlight! The 148th running of the Kentucky Derby will take place at Churchill Downs on Saturday, May 7, and the best way to enjoy it on St. Simons Island is to “stop and smell the roses” at Frederica Academy’s signature Derby Day fundraiser. The 20th Annual Derby Day event will be held at Sea Island’s Retreat Clubhouse from 5:00-9:30 p.m. This highly anticipated evening of fun includes a race simulcast, raffle, online silent auction, and live auction. Ladies in their best Derby hats and fascinators and gents in seersucker suits will enjoy scrumptious fare, mint juleps, and other libations, on the scenic grounds
where Beachview Event Rentals & Design has worked their magic to create a festive atmosphere with tents, tables, and outdoor seating areas. When the trumpet sounds for the race at 6:45 p.m., guests will gather to watch the horses and jockeys as they speed down the track, jostling for a spot in the Winner’s Circle. Following the simulcast, the excitement continues with lively bidding for fantastic experience packages and other live auction items. Once the live auctions conclude, patrons can dance the night away with music by local favorites Mason Waters and the Groove Allstars during the post-race band party. Last call will be at 9:30 p.m. This year’s co-chairs Dana & Denny Carter and Katie & Jason Widener invite everyone to join the fun. “Derby Day planning began months ago, and we’re excited to say that thanks to a team of dedicated and inspired FA volunteers, this year’s event will be better than ever. We encourage patrons to dust off their hats and seersucker suits and join us on Saturday, May 7.” Once enrolled for a sponsorship or registered for the online silent auction, Derby Day patrons will receive email and text
communications, which will provide updates on the online auction and raffle. They can view, bid, and check-out via this the website. Derby Day attendees will need to have a smartphone accessible for the event. The items donated for this auction are always impressive and you’re encouraged to bid on as many items as you’d like! Remember the proceeds from this event directly supports Frederica
Academy’s mission, “To maximize the potential of each student and to prepare every student for college and adult life through the development of mind, body, and spirit.” All details and updates regarding Derby Day, including sponsorships, silent auction, live auction, and raffle can be found on the Derby Day website, which can be accessed by texting FADerby to 76278 or by visiting FADerby.givesmart.com.

Is Now a Good Time for a Roth Conversion? b y L i z C o o p e r m a n , C PA
A
Roth individual retirement account (IRA) provides tax advantages that a traditional IRA does not. Qualified Roth IRA withdrawals are always federal income tax-free and usually state income tax-free as well, depending on the state (they are tax-free in Georgia). Taxpayers can convert all or a portion of a traditional IRA to a Roth IRA by paying the tax now. This allows high earners to bypass the income limits for yearly Roth IRA contributions – this is also known as a “backdoor Roth.” This may seem counterintuitive, but there are several good reasons for Roth conversions. Current federal tax rates are probably as low as they will ever be. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 reduced the average federal income tax rate from
20.8% to 19.3%, but tax rates are increasing slightly each year due to inflation and new legislation passed by Congress that could raise individual tax rates significantly in the next few years. Additionally, the conflict in Europe has affected the stock market and prices are down. Essentially, this means that an investment that was worth $100,000 at the end of 2021 might be worth $75,000 now. If you convert that $75,000 and later your investments regain their value, you have avoided tax on $25,000. Another advantage of Roth IRAs is that there is no required minimum distribution, making them a great asset for higher income individuals to leave to their heirs. There are also some potential disadvantages to Roth conversions that taxpayers should
be aware of. First, there is a “five-year rule.” Generally, Roth IRAs allow tax and penalty-free withdrawals after the age of 59½. For Roth conversions, there is a 10% penalty on withdrawals made before the account is five years old. The clock starts on January 1st of the year that the first conversion occurs. Another consideration for retired taxpayers is Medicare Part B: the monthly premium is based on your modified adjust gross income (MAGI) for the prior

two years, and a Roth conversion could cause the premium to increase for some taxpayers. Of course, this only summarizes some of the advantages and disadvantages of a Roth conversion. There are many other factors that must be considered. Please contact us if you would like to discuss a Roth conversion. We would be happy to speak to you about the process in more detail and help you decide if this is a good tax strategy for you.

DOWNTOWN DELIGHT WE HAD SUCH A BLAST working on March’s “Takin’ It Downtown” feature and highlighting our special and unique Port City of Brunswick, its historic district, and many of the businesses that contribute to its fun and funky vibe. The overwhelmingly positive
A
t the point we decided to make downtown Brunswick our focus, naturally we reached out to h2o creative group to help us get started. Boy, did they come through and we’re so appreciative for their contributions. Not only did Lance Sabbe open his home as part of our “Old Town, New Vibe” section, the lovely ladies you see at Daddy Cate’s Coffee in “Brunswick: Morning, Noon & Night” are part of h2o’s dynamic creative team.
response to that issue has blown us away! When Ben Slade, the former Executive Director of the St. Simons Land Trust and the Chair of the Board of Directors for Forward Brunswick, tells you that it might be the best issue of Elegant Island Living ever, that’s heady praise!

Anne Goodstein is equally creative outside of her work at h2o. After the current exhibit of intriguing interactive photographic art by Nathaniel Thompson at SoGlo Gallery closes on April 9, an exhibit entitled “Hope” featuring works by Anne and her husband Christophe will be on display there. Come out to the opening reception on Wednesday, April 13 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. to meet her in person, if you haven’t already. Some other
new art we’re excited to share is vibrant work by Kevin Bongang that now beautifies the plain concrete building you saw in “Moving Brunswick Forward.” Owner Kelly Hnatt of BuildWise Project Management shared a photo of the new mural (above). Turn to our Social Scene gallery on pages 86-87 in this issue to see photos from the ribbon-cutting at Queen Square, March’s First Friday fun, and Tipsy’s 10th Anniversary Street Party. Continue to keep up with downtown events and live music by visiting EIL’s online calendar, “I’m With the Band” listings, and by following our social media accounts. As always, we encourage you to check the Marketplace Directory on our website to see listings including maps, social media links, and other information for the businesses you see in our pages. Elegant Island Living is proud to be a part of this community – on both sides of the causeway!

People often ask me, “Do I really need to bring a gift?” I always answer, “Yes.” We all know to give a gift when invited to a wedding, but with other occasions we tend to question if we should. Gifts don’t need to be expensive. GI F T GI V I NG T I P S F OR S PR I NG Never show up to someone’s home empty handed. Whether you’re visiting a best friend, new friend, or work friend, the gift should be based on the occasion and the relationship. It’s always best to bring a little something.

My favorite small gestures when going to someone’s home for dinner are fun paper cocktail napkins, good chocolate, a small bottle of wine or Prosecco, or fresh flowers. When staying in someone’s home for the weekend, some thoughtful gifts are linen cocktail napkins, personalized items, a beautiful picture frame, or a coffee table book. ost locals know Tracie Beane as the “Toy Lady” from her 20 years as the owner of Whippersnappers toy store. Although she sold that business in 2019 and retired, Tracie discovered that sitting at home isn’t her style and went to work at St. Simons Drug Co. As her time there has progressed, new tasks have been put on her plate, and she now handles the purchasing of the toys, games, books, and puzzles you see on their shelves. There couldn’t be a more natural fit! Tracie explains that retail is in her blood. Originally from Tennessee, Tracie moved to St. Simons Island in 1999 when her parents retired here. She had grown up working in her parents sporting goods store, handling its trophy and custom work. The opportunity to purchase Whippersnappers was available, so Tracie took advantage of it and started her life here on the island. While owning the business could be stressful and exhausting for a single mom, she is proud of the reputation and customer base she built, and rightfully so! Tracie credits her husband, Bob, who came into her life more than a decade ago, for being a huge help in the store and at home. Now Tracie is thrilled to be back doing what she loves in a place with a fantastic staff (that includes her son Spencer) and reputation for excellent service, where so many of her former customers come to shop. She says with a touch of bemusement, “And they’re always so happy to see me!” This really shouldn’t be a surprise as she has helped many parents and grandparents, friends and family, locals and tourists alike, pick out S T. perfect birthday and Christmas gifts for the children being celebrated. When asked what toys are currently popular or trending, Tracie says that’s tough to answer. “Electronics make toys a challenge, so we’re always trying to find toys that encourage kids to use their imagination. Without needing batteries. Family games are very popular, because they get everyone involved.” St. Simons Drug Co. has everything from classic toys and children’s books, stuffed animals, baby and toddler toys, to family games, puzzles, and creative crafting. Tracie’s favorite part of the job is demonstrating the toys. She loves when people ask her what a good gift would be for a certain aged child, so she can choose a toy or two and show how it works and exactly why kids find it appealing. She also makes the store employees try everything out when she gets an order in, so they too can answer questions about the toys offered. So don’t hesitate to drop by and pick out some new toys or games and let Tracie have some fun. If she happens to be wearing a toy tiara, just know that she’s earned it!

Thank You, RSM Classic!
T
itle sponsor RSM US LLP and tournament host organization Davis Love Foundation (DLF) recently announced that the 12th annual RSM Classic held last November raised $5,580,325 for charitable organizations. That brings the grand total raised by St. Simons Island’s official PGA TOUR event since its inception in 2010 to $28,869,523!
“The RSM Classic provides us with the opportunity each year to showcase our core value of stewardship by supporting deserving North American nonprofits in the 87 cities where our people live and work,” said Joe Adams, RSM US LLP managing partner and CEO. “Our people, clients, friends, Team RSM and the PGA TOUR share our focus on building tomorrow’s middle market leaders by supporting children and families in need.” Doug Opheim, CFO and chairman of the RSM US Foundation, says “I’m humbled each year by our people’s dedication to Birdies
Fore Love, our annual Volunteer Week and many other activities that enhance the quality of life for those in their local communities, and we at RSM are honored to amplify those efforts through the support of the RSM US Foundation. Through the 2021 RSM Classic alone, our people, clients and friends raised more than $4.8 million for those in need. Their commitment to making the world a better place is evidenced by their generosity and dedication.” In addition, RSM’s Birdies Fore Love Charity Competition donated $1 million to charities supported by PGA TOUR players who recorded the most birdies (or better) during Fall PGA events. Charitable dollars raised through The RSM Classic are distributed by the RSM US Foundation and DLF Established in 2005 by Davis Love III and his wife Robin, DLF supports national and community-based programs that focus on children and their families. Its mission is to help build a better
future for children and their families who are at risk of poor educational, economic, social and health outcomes. “Giving back to the community is at the center of the PGA TOUR’s long history, and the Davis Love Foundation is honored to partner with an organization where its tournaments have provided so much in charitable giving over the years,” said Love III. “Robin and I are thrilled about the total raised through the 2021 RSM Classic, and we’re looking forward to doing even greater things this November – all made possible due largely to our dedicated team at the Davis Love Foundation, and our incredible relationships with title sponsor RSM and other sponsors, and the Golden Isles community.” The 2022 RSM Classic is scheduled for November 14-20 at Sea Island Golf Club. PEDIATRIC SENSORY ROOM UNVEILED Wolfson Children’s at Southeast Georgia Health System recently unveiled its new Donohue Sensory Room, a therapeutic space designed to help children with autism spectrum disorders and/or sensory challenges feel calm, supported, and focused while at the pediatric specialty clinic. The room was made possible by a $40,000 gift from The AJ Donohue Foundation. “Our foundation’s mission started with my brother, AJ, who in the final weeks of his life, decided to raise money to support the patients and families at Wolfson Children’s Hospital,” said Luke Donohue. “It has now been 16 years since he passed away, but his vision is alive and stronger than ever.” Wolfson Children’s Hospital Vice President of Operations Thabata Ford stated, “Thanks to the generosity and continued support of The AJ Donohue Foundation, as well as to our longstanding partners at Southeast Georgia Health System, we are able to go the extra mile to meet the needs of families seeking specialized pediatric services close to home.” sghs.org MORNINGSTAR RECEIVES GRANT Thanks to the generosity of our community in meeting the funding challenge presented by the Murray Challenge Grant, Morningstar Children and Family Services recently received a grant from the Stuart and Eulene Murray Foundation to complete renovations to Bradley Cottage. One of three residential homes on campus, Bradley Cottage was temporarily closed in August 2021 due to staffing shortages created by the pandemic. This presented the opportunity to make extensive renovations
to the facility. Hank and Julie Rowland were on hand to officially present the grant. Hank’s great-grandfather, Stuart Murray, and his wife Eulene established the Foundation. Julie has worked closely with Morningstar through her business PillowGrace and its philanthropic arm, the PillowGrace Project, as well as other charitable organizations. Established in 1996, Morningstar is the only residential program in Georgia dedicated to foster children with developmental disabilities. Learn more at morningstarcfs.org.

Two wet bars are in service, as well. 4 bedrooms, 5.5 baths. 5,726 square feet plus double carport. .85 acre site with fenced back yard. Lots of potential! $2,995,000

Coastal Connection: Opening U.S. 17 in Georgia
T
hough the cooling breezes and beaches of the Golden Isles had attracted regional visitors for decades, the building of the Atlantic Coastal Highway from Calais, Maine, to Miami, Florida, transformed local tourism. The completion of U.S. 17 made this area of Georgia accessible by paved roads to thousands of motorists travelling along the coast. Construction of the Georgia section began in 1924. As the project neared completion, civic leaders in Brunswick started working on a plan to beautify local stretches of the road. As reported in The Brunswick Pilot on April 15, 1927, the state landscape engineer would be asked to develop a plan that could be executed with assistance
from the Brunswick Women’s Club. The highway near Savannah was already being planted with “palms, lilies, and other flowering plants.” The road through Georgia was officially opened at a ceremony attended by 3,000 people in the Liberty County town of Midway on October 27, 1927; however, another celebration was held nine months later in Glynn County. On July 11, 1928, the completed Georgia section was turned over to the president of the Atlantic Coastal Highway, Frank O. Miller, at an impressive, though rain-drenched, ceremony, held at the original County Casino on St. Simons Island. Unfortunately, as described in the July 13th edition of The Brunswick Pilot, the schedule of afternoon activities was curtailed due to stormy weather and high
seas. Two races were held at the St. Simons pier for “prawn boats” owned by the Portuguese fishing community, but races for smaller vessels were cancelled. Activities at the Sea Island Beach Casino were held despite the rain. These included a “Parade and Revue” of regional beauty queens, swimming competitions for adults and children, a diving exhibition, and dancing in the evening.
line was described as putting Brunswick “on the main line between north and south travel.”
The July 13th Pilot also announced the opening of passenger bus service on U.S. 17 between Savannah and Jacksonville with a stop in Brunswick. Owned by the Coastal Transport Company, a subsidiary of Sea Island Company, the new
This month’s images from the Coastal Georgia Historical Society archives show a Brunswick Pilot map of the southern half of the Coastal Highway and an early postcard of the Sea Island Casino, where many of the celebratory events took place.
