ELEGANT ISLAND LIVING
Pickleball is a paddle sport created for all ages and skill levels. The sport combines many elements of tennis, badminton and ping pong. It is played on a badminton-sized court, or a slightly modified tennis court, using a paddle and a plastic ball with holes that looks like a wiffle ball. It can be played as singles or doubles. After getting run ragged for an hour by my friend Maggie and her father Larry, I vowed to practice so that the next time I played with them I would not get embarrassed. Whatever it is that you might want to master, you can become better at anything. But you
will NOT get better if: 1) you don’t want to, and 2) you aren’t willing to feel the discomfort of doing things differently. Maybe you want to be a better cook, or break 80 on the golf course, or learn to tango. Learning anything new is uncomfortable at first. You need to act in ways that are unfamiliar. Take risks that are new. Try things that will probably be frustrating initially, because they won’t work the first time. You are guaranteed to feel awkward. You will make mistakes. You may end up embarrassed or even feel shame, especially if you are used to succeeding a lot. Just remember, if you remain committed through all of that, you’ll get better. All I know is Maggie is coming back to town in April, and if I don’t get some practice, I’ll be in a real pickle!

The azaleas and magnolias start to bloom and the island comes alive for the Episcopal Church Women of Christ Church Frederica’s annual Tour of Homes on St. Patrick’s Day weekend. That’s only fitting because it’s also a season of rain and rainbows, and, in a sense, the Tour is really a pot of gold for our community because its proceeds benefit many local non-profit agencies that serve children and families in the Golden Isles. In these pages, we celebrate this golden opportunity for giving and good works with fine jewelry from local retailers being modeled by representatives from some of the local charities who received funds from the ECW following last year’s Tour. he Annual Tour of Homes presented by the Episcopal Church Women of Christ Church Frederica is now in its 66th year. The proceeds of the Tour are used to benefit local and regional charities that assist women and children. More than a decade ago, Barbara Bruce, 2008 Tour Chairman, said of the grant award process that is used to distribute the proceeds raised from the Tour of Homes, “For me, this is one of the most rewarding aspects of the Tour…fulfilling our mission statement which is to benefit women and children. We meet as a board to review all the grant requests and meticulously select from that list. We share the joy of this ministry with the entire congregation of Christ Church.” That year, the ECW gifted $70,000 to approximately two dozen charities. Amazingly, that generosity has grown and flourished. Last year, the ECW was able to make a record high gift of $85,000 to nearly 40 local and regional charities. Every organization that applied for a grant was accepted! Grant requests range from program funding to equipment purchase and improvements to facilities. These funds are incredibly beneficial to the agencies receiving them, and words of gratitude are echoed in the many letters of thanks from the recipients. “Please know how grateful we are for your partnership. There are so many who fall through the cracks and don’t qualify for financial help from other agencies due to race, age, income, and (other criteria).” “Your good work in the community is such a gift. Your kind and generous donation allows
us to continue to help kids.” “Words cannot express our gratitude for your generous donation. It will help us feed single moms and their
children from every racial, economic and spiritual background.” And there are many more opportunities to serve needs in our (continues)

Be a Good Neighbor by
Jane
Bozza
Everybody loves Mr. Rogers, and can probably recite his signature song, “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” Yet there’s another quote attributed to Fred Rogers that is not quite as well known, but is especially appropriate for this story: “Anyone who helps a child in his life is a hero to me.”
P
ossibly no one was more of a children’s advocate than Mr. Rogers, and he was definitely a hero in his own right. But, heroes come in many shapes and ages and from all walks of life. The staff and advocates that serve at the Glynn Community Crisis Center are most certainly heroes. For over 35 years, the Glynn Community Crisis Center has opened its arms to those fleeing from domestic violence, including their children. A variety of child-specific programs are offered, including stress-relieving dog therapy. Other activities provided include board games, outdoor play, reading time, movies and other special events throughout the year. There is no question that domestic violence takes its toll on the adults in those relationships, but, often, little attention is given to the children and youth in those homes. More than five 30

million children witness domestic violence each year in the US. 40 million adult Americans grew up living with some level of domestic violence. These are not just statistics. These numbers relate to current and former children of domestic violence; real children and adults who struggle to survive and cope on a daily basis. Through Amity House, an emergency shelter, the Glynn Community Crisis Center has supported and empowered victims in creating a new life, free of domestic violence. The Glynn Community Crisis Center staff and advocates are very sensitive to the needs and feelings of the children. The Agency’s Outreach Coordinator Kathlene Manor recently assisted a client and her 16-year-old son at Amity House. “We helped register him for school, and prior to attending the first day, he expressed concern about not having the right shoes for school.
As his advocate, it became important for us to ensure that he had a pair of shoes that he would not feel out of place wearing as a new student in a new school. After collaborating with another agency, we were able to get the youth a brand new pair of shoes.” She continues, “He was so excited. He cleaned his shoes daily, and the smile on his face let us know that he felt at peace among his peers, even though he was living in a domestic violence shelter.” Glynn Community Crisis Center Coordinator Kathlene Manor: a hero.
The Agency’s Child/Family Advocate, Rachel Edwards, is watchful of the children, to ensure that their needs are met. “A client came into Amity House with her seven year old daughter. When it was time to go to school, (continues)

the daughter expressed concern about starting a new school without her hair being done.” Rachel explained, “It was important for the child to begin a new school without feeling badly about the way she looked. I could tell it affected her self-esteem. We reached out to a staff member, who agreed to do the little girl’s hair in a stylish, but age-appropriate manner.” She continued, “We all know how one’s outer appearance can be judged by peers and become a source of bullying. Getting her hair done made a world of difference for this child. She was like a ray of sunshine, smiling from ear to ear every day we saw her.” Glynn Community Crisis Center
which provides support for the agency’s non-residential clients; and Community Outreach/ Education, which offers prevention programs for agencies and groups within Glynn and McIntosh counties in order to break the cycle of domestic violence. Each incentive is a key component in the transformation from victims to survivors, and exemplifies the Glynn Community Crisis Center’s vision of caring for victims of domestic violence, as well as its commitment to breaking the cycle of violence through education.
Advocate Rachel Edwards: a hero.
Executive Director Dottie Bromley says, “One of the many goals of the Glynn Community Crisis Center is to help the kids feel as at-home as possible and to provide a safe environment that allows the children to have the opportunity to express themselves without censorship. It’s bringing the child back to the place of being a child and doing childlike things.” She stresses, “It is important for children who experience domestic violence, or other traumatic situations in their lives, to have a chance to feel as normal as possible, and that includes how they present to other children. Whether it’s hair, clothing, shoes or a jacket, they want to appear to be like any other child, not poor, not living in a shelter, not wearing hand-medown clothes.”
“Many parents think that their children’s lives are not impacted by the domestic violence. But, sadly, the children are, and many who do not seek help are four times as likely to become abusers themselves, or victims,” said the Agency’s Lead Victims Advocate Charmaine Thomas. “I encourage all victims/survivors that I work with to seek counseling for their children. As an agency, we encourage the parents to spend quality time with their children and to listen to them. It is important that the family is renewed and can focus on rebuilding after leaving the abuse. I always say, the children are our future and we need to invest in them today in order to have a better tomorrow,” Charmaine concluded. Glynn Community Crisis Center Lead Victims Advocate

Charmaine Thomas: a hero.
Executive Director Dottie Bromley: a hero, leading other heroes.

Brave, courageous, and a child of domestic violence, Barry Porter is definitely headed for a better tomorrow. Barry’s mother, Titania Cook, shared, “Unfortunately, my son, and all my children, have been exposed to domestic violence all of their lives. I feel so bad to have to admit that, but it is the truth. One that I have to deal with.” Barry was eight when his siblings and his mother went to Amity House, having escaped from domestic violence in Virginia.
Titania Cook and son Barry Porter
“I went to Amity House,” explained Titania. “And I am so grateful that I was able to go there. They made sure my children and I were safe, and assisted me in coming up with a plan to work on stabilizing my family.” Now, almost 10 years later, Titania has a good job, is active in the community, and she and her children have their own place. A mother, a domestic violence survivor, Titania Cook: a hero.
Although Barry is a quiet, soft-spoken young man, one can’t help but feel the strength of this 17-year-old. “When I was younger, I felt helpless and alone. I was too small and too young to protect my mom and brother,” said Barry. “I was angry and frustrated.” Slated to graduate from Glynn Academy in May, Barry is still weighing his options as to what to do then. One possibility, he said, is to go to culinary school. In the meantime, in order to redirect his anger and frustration of domestic violence, Barry vents his emotions through music. Barry has written a rap song that warns of the dangers of domestic violence, speaks to the fear and loneliness, and encourages change, which is the title of the song. Set to the background music of Michael Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror,” the lyrics of “Change” draw you in to Barry’s hope for change, not in just himself and his family, but also in the world. “I’m going to deliver this earth from the violence and pain ...” (continues)

The full song lyrics can be heard on YouTube by searching for YRH Eman’on Doee. Barry’s goal is to encourage those who find themselves a part of the abuse to direct their emotions toward positive actions rather than negative. “My real hope for the future is that someday I can set up a fund that will help children of domestic violence. I want to be able to give them a place to feel safe, where they won’t feel alone or scared,” said Barry. “I want to someday be able to have enough money to take a group to a camp or the beach or just out somewhere for the day, so that they can enjoy some time and have fun like a child is supposed to have, without fear or pain.” A high school senior, a child of

The mission of this family business is to brew a barrel of beer that feels like Southern comfort and the crisp mornings Georgia knows best. Eagle Creek Brewing Co. was founded in August 2013 with a focus on producing delicious, interesting and highly drinkable beers using the very best ingredients available. His lifelong connection to the land and passion for bringing music, food, and people together was a natural path to wine. Sharing a common passion and respect for the land with his partner, despite growing up on opposite ends of the country, Californian John Killebrew is able to tap into his desire to make things with his own hands, stay immersed in nature, and find each season’s expression through the vines in his role as winemaker. THE PINE BOX DWELLERS
Matt and Jerry English first learned to fish and hunt on this family land in Americus, Georgia. Wolf Creek was at one time a successful golf course, but was later abandoned, and the cousins purchased it and turned it into a winery and vineyard that now boasts over twenty five hundred vines covering more than twenty acres of beautiful vineyards with ten varieties of muscadine grapes. Or perhaps, you’d like to get into the spirit(s), with Four Roses Bourbon or Lit Vodka. Four Roses Bourbon has been made with the same passion in Kentucky since 1888 and is unlike any other Bourbon. Only Four Roses handcrafts 10 distinct and extraordinary Bourbon recipes. One has been selected by hand to become Four Roses Single Barrel. Four are expertly mingled by hand to create Four Roses Small Batch. And as many as all 10 are used to create Four Roses Bourbon. You’ll agree that the extra time and effort spent on this artistry is well worth it when you taste the results. Midland, Georgia’s Lit Ultra-Premium Vodka markets itself as a lifestyle brand for the modern thrill seeker who lives life without regret. In that case, we’ll be happy to see what they’re mixing up for cocktails at this fun event.

The Pine Box Dwellers, out of Waycross, Georgia, play in local venues regularly and were the entertainment at the Saint Simons Food & Spirits Festival’s 2018 Taste of the Golden Isles event. Southern Rock royalty, Randall Bramblett has been a regular performer at Brunswick’s Blessing of the Fleet over the years and often appears for special concerts locally. Athens cover band Strawberry Flats fronted by John Keane has been known to appear at Gnat’s Landing, although it’s been a while. Now, you’ve got a chance to see them all at one event. The Pine Box Dwellers had the distinction of being named “2018 Band of the Year” at the Georgia Country Awards and the American country-roots rock band was also popular at last year’s historic downtown Brunswick PorchFest. Dubbed “Swampadelic,” their music combines the authenticity of folk and Americana with energetic rock and blues grooves. Many of the band’s original songs reflect how being raised in a small swamp town has shaped their love for family, life and music, and their covers of popular tunes range the gamut from classic country to “Purple Rain.” Fronted by Sean Clark on vocals and acoustic guitar, the band members include Jesse Herrin on bass, Connor Griffin on vocals and pine box, Jody Perritt on vocals, lap steel, and harmonica, with “extended (continues)

Dweller family members” John Pope joining on electric guitar and Lee O’Neal on drums and vocals. C’mon out and do some Dwellin’! Randall Bramblett is, of course, Southern Rock royalty, and has been a regular performer here at The Brunswick Blessing of the Fleet and other musical events and festivals. This talented multi-instrumentalist has graced stages with legends like Bonnie Raitt, The Allman Brothers Band, Steve Winwood, Government Mule, The Band, and Widespread Panic. His songwriting skills are equally as impressive, as he penned the title track for the Grammy nominated Blind Boys of Alabama’s new album, as well as an extensive catalog of songs covered by Gregg Allman, Bonnie Raitt, Delbert McClinton and more. Bramblett has 11 albums under his belt, and it’s in his career as frontman where his artistry is on full display. With Juke Joint at the Edge of the World, his most recent, and first solo, album, his storied career rolls on with continual reinvention and true conviction. With a commitment to the necessary evolution of music, Bramblett has kept his career as fresh as the day it began. Reason #528 he is Georgia’s Musical Treasure. His band is second to none and are the perfect team to bring his brilliance to life with tons of soul, funk and talent. Do not miss an opportunity to experience them live! Grammy-nominated record producer John Keane is well known for his extensive work
with R.E.M., the Indigo Girls, and Widespread Panic, among others. What you might not have known is that he fronted the Athens cover band Strawberry Flats! Strawberry Flats was founded in 1985 as a fun cover band to pay tribute to the psychedelic music era of 1967-1972 and the tunes by the likes of Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Steppenwolf, Cream, Deep Purple, and, of course, The Beatles. Original founder Wade Hester traded off lead vocals and lead guitar with John Keane until Wade’s busy professional schedule made gigging with the Flats impossible. The band took an 11 year hiatus until a few years ago, and, aside from Wade’s absence,

all band members are the original members, with John Keane on lead vocals and lead guitar, Scott Sanders on vocals and bass; Tim White on keyboard, and Dean Quinter on drums. This show is sure to rock! The St. Simons Food & Spirits Festival is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization that highlights the best of the Golden Isles’ culinary bounty, scenic beauty and history while raising funds and awareness for its charity of choice, Hospice of the Golden Isles. Tickets for Bites & Bands are $75 each. Pro-Scramble, But Anti-Squirm W
hile we’re all for scrambling to help raise money to find a cure, we don’t like squirming with the discomfort sometimes that comes with mammograms. In fact, some women may avoid having mammograms because they find the procedure uncomfortable or painful. However, experts at Baylor Health Care System state that mammography is currently the most effective way of finding breast cancer in its earliest and most treatable stages, so the procedure is necessary. Here are some tips they offer to lessen discomfort: Opt to wear something easy on/easy off. One-piece dresses, rompers,
and bodysuits may not be the best bet for simple and quick removal.
taining caffeine. (Check the label of any OTC medication you take.)
The use of deodorant, oils, perfumes or powders should be avoided the week before a mammogram. These products can leave behind a residue that gets picked up by the X-rays, obscuring the mammogram and interfering with the results. This may mean you’d need another screening.
And something many women don’t think about: “Most women’s breasts are naturally more tender or slightly swollen during the week prior to their menstrual period,” Dr. Alicia Starr, medical director of the Women’s Imaging Center at Baylor Regional Medical Center at Plano, noted. “Try to avoid scheduling your annual mammogram during this time.”
The week before your mammogram, you should also stay away from coffee, tea or caffeinated soft drinks. Caffeine can make breasts tender and lumpy, which may result in discomfort during the procedure. You should also avoid chocolate and over-the-counter pain relievers con-
Follow these tips, share with your friends, and make sure you encourage them to follow a regular mammogram schedule too. It’s a good way to take care of yourself and each other.

I’m not new to aging, but I am new to this age. The age where my balance is mischievous, reaction times lazy, and my agility is sometimes asleep at the wheel. I love my life. I have lived life full, and will continue to do so for a long, long time. But I have limits now, a few more than a decade ago. I can overcome most of them, but now I just need a little help. That sounds simple, though it was a bit of a journey to admit with full authenticity. You see, I’m a man of proud accomplishments. I’ve actually caught trout from a stream, seasoned steak the right way, tired out my grandkids and picked up a hitchhiker. A man living the extremes. Then, somewhere along the way, frequent trips, drops, buckles and spills began shaping this larger story. At first I thought it was me being clumsy, or slippery new material originally created for space exploration. The recurrence of blunders proved my reasoning flawed, and my pride slowly relented.

Like all those who conquer so many days, the accumulation of experience takes a toll on one’s body. Today, those trout are safe, steaks not so much, hitchhikers, do yourself right and take a cab or Uber, especially at night. My tires have seen just about every road shoulder this side of the Mississippi. Like I said, reaction times have slowed, traffic hasn’t. I’m not one to let some weeds stop me; I adapt. I know what I want, the goal has always been the easy part to figure out:
REMAIN INDEPENDENT, STAY INDEPENDENT, BE INDEPENDENT. The question I eventually asked myself:
“How does this remain my reality?” I Google searched my friends, scoured endless referral lists, and combed .gov sites that redirected to pages of nothing. It felt like hours had been wasted and all I had was the term ASSISTED LIVING added to my lexicon. So equipped with an industry term and horrific feeling, I turned to my trusted inner circle.
My colleagues and self-anointed geniuses weren’t exactly in the know, but they had some great assumptions about Assisted Living. (continues)

More than Just a
W
e opened this issue talking about the community giving that is done through the grants issued to local non-profits from proceeds raised by the annual Tour of Homes presented by the Episcopal Church Women of Christ Church Frederica. Now we’d like to shine a light on another local outreach founded by the community for the community. Many people think of Hello Goodbuy, the little resale shop on the corner of Highway 17 and Gloucester Street, as simply another thrift store, but it is so much more than that! In the 1950s, the St. Mark’s Thrift Store was started as an outreach ministry of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Brunswick by a small group of people with big hearts. Their giant leap of faith gained modest success in the store’s early years and a model for giving back to those in need in the community was developed. In 2011, the store was relocated and reborn as Hello Goodbuy, the Golden Isles’ Non-Profit Resale Store, and is run by a paid and volunteer staff. The thrift store is run completely on community

donations and is fueled by locals helping locals. Their purpose is to utilize sales from the thrift store to support church outreach work and to finance projects led by local non-profit agencies and outreach programs through quarterly distributions, and their mission remains the same as it always was: to return ALL proceeds in excess of operating expenses to the Golden Isles community. On January 12, Hello Goodbuy distributed $29,611 to 11 area non-profits at their 4th Quarter of 2018 Giving Back ceremony, bringing their total Community Impact since opening to almost $800,000 to date and assisting approximately 100 organizations. That is incredible! And it can only be accomplished through generous donations, hardworking staff and volunteers, loyal customers, and community support. (continues)

You can make a difference in people’s lives just by bargain shopping or getting rid of your unwanted items! Donations are accepted between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. and pickup can be arranged if you have gently used furniture or large items to donate. Hello Goodbuy accepts anything from furniture, clothing, children’s items and toys, beds and bedding to housewares, jewelry, media, collectible, and more. If it’s in decent condition, they’ll take it! And if they can’t use it, they’ll find someone who can. Remember your donations are tax-deductible too!
Something else Hello Goodbuy does well is digital. In addition to selling in the thrift store, they are a vendor on eBay. Their website (hellogoodbuystore.com) is very well done and user friendly, with a link to their e-bay listings, as well as a photo gallery of many items in the store. Here you can also find information about the quarterly distributions, a list of recipients, and an online application for quarterly funding, if you happen to represent a qualifying 501(c)(3). There’s also an online volunteer application too, so you too can get involved.
In addition to the quarterly giving through the Outreach Program, Hello Goodbuy also hosts special First Saturday Sales with deals in the main building and in the annex located in the adjacent building. These sales are used to raise funds for a specific community non-profit each month. In January, funds were raised for the St. Mark’s Towers Residents Council to provide entertainment and activities for their homebound residents. In February, proceeds from sales in the annex were used to support the local Coast Guard Auxiliary, as they were affected by non-payment during the federal government shut-down. Hello Goodbuy also helps people with material needs on a daily basis. In 2018, they gave away more than $20,000 worth of merchandise to people in need in the Golden Isles community.
The Hello Goodbuy Facebook page is another fabulous resource. They post regularly so you can find out about new items in the store as well as any special sales and events. They also use it to celebrate and support their volunteers and the work they do outside of Hello Goodbuy. For instance, they shared a photo posted by Keep Golden Isles Beautiful showing a team of volunteers at February’s GreenScreen Film Festival Local Environmental Organization Fair, with this comment: “Hello Goodbuy Board Member and Volunteer Chrys Graham sets a great example of what we stand for — not only being part of our Community, but actively working to make a difference and leave a positive impact. We are proud to call her one of our own.” They are helping to promote the West Marigold Mardi

She believes in our Community and actively makes her mark as a caregiver, nurturer, and supporter.” They are wonderfully supportive of others: encouraging people to visit local businesses where volunteers are employed, sharing other outreach projects, and even announcing the opening of the new Safe Harbor Thrift Shop. We love seeing this type of engagement! Hello Goodbuy is located at 1523 Glynn Ave. in Brunswick, and is open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. every day except Sunday. They can be reached at 912.264.8181 with any questions or to arrange furniture pick-up. Follow Hello Goodbuy on Facebook and visit the thrift store website at hellogoodbuystore.com. For a truly uplifting experience, drop in the store during the Quarterly Funding Ceremonies to see who the non-profit recipients are and hear about what they plan on doing with the money. It’s amazing to see how so many people in our community can be touched by the work of this one little store! CHANGES TO TURTLE CRAWL Turtle Crawl was created in 2003 as a fundraiser for the Georgia Sea Turtle Center (GSTC). Since that time, the event and its participants have raised more than $100,000 to help save sea turtles. As the Center continues to grow and change, so will the event that supports its lifesaving work. The sprint and international triathlons have been eliminated from the Turtle Crawl events, but the highly popular 5k and 10k races remain and a one-mile Fun Run on the beach has been added. The new earlier event date is March 9. Registration prices remain the same, including a donation to the Georgia Sea Turtle Center an daily admission to the Center. A Ghost Crawler option has been added to allow people who can’t participate in the event to support GSTC and receive a race shirt. For more information, visit jekyllisland.org.

SSI ARCHIVES
This month’s images from the Coastal Georgia Historical Society archives are the cover of the booklet and an illustration of the clubhouse with floorplans. It appears that the East Beach familyclubhouse project was never implemented. A subdivision plat prepared for the Bruce family in 1924 shows the parcel divided into the lots that we see today.
An Early Plan to Develop East Beach
A
round 1914, an intriguing promotional booklet was produced by Edward C. Bruce to interest families in buying lots on an undeveloped parcel known as East Beach. The booklet proposed an unusual type of residence for each lot: the family-clubhouse. Twenty families would band together to form a club, and each club would build a clubhouse with twenty-two small bedrooms, a “general assembly room,’’ a large screened porch, a kitchen and dining room, a servants’ room, and two bathrooms on each floor. The extra two bedrooms could be used for guests of the club members. Owners of an East Beach clubhouse would have access to 7,000 feet of frontage on the Atlantic Ocean and a beach 400 feet wide, which was “as smooth as an asphalt
drive … in constant use as the main speedway for motorists during the hours when bathers are not in the surf.” An illustration of the clubhouse design indicated that Leila Ross Wilburn of Atlanta was the architect. A native of Macon who attended Agnes Scott Institute (later Agnes Scott College), Wilburn received private instruction in architectural drawing and served as an apprentice before opening her own office. She was a pioneer in her field, not only because of her gender but also because of her business model. Instead of pursuing private commissions, she published illustrated plan books with mail-order house designs, which contractors and builders used to construct hundreds of homes throughout Georgia. Known as one of Georgia’s most prolific architects, she also designed apartment buildings and duplexes.
Our monthly images on this page are from the vast archives of the Coastal Georgia Historical Society. The Society’s mission includes the “administration, restoration and maintenance of historic facilities and resources … preserved as a living part of the historical and cultural foundations of our coastal community.” Society facilities include the St. Simons Lighthouse and Museum, the A.W. Jones Heritage Center, and the World War II Home Front Museum at the Historic Coast Guard Station. To learn more about the Society, its diverse programs, and the benefits of Society membership, please call 912.638.4666, or visit coastalgeorgiahistory.org.
