When I see the word “love”...I tend to initially think in terms of “romantic love.” Also words like joy, peace, faithfulness, respect, commitment, integrity, delight; and possibly covenant, all come to mind. Romantic love can seem somewhat elusive at times. If you find a true connection with compatibility...hang on and honor it. You know when you know and it’s most definitely something to celebrate! In this issue, we get a glimpse into some fabulous local weddings! Such creative ideas for the most special of moments... anchored by the backstory. I treasure stories and learning from others! Some of us have lived a series of love stories, and some have life stories. Some are blessed to have a love story and a life story as one in the same! I wanted to find one of those lifelong love stories right here in Ellis County. Iris and Charley Wilson, married 68 years, share their heartwarming response to my quest on Page 58. My own family is so blessed as we applaud my parents who celebrate 61 beautiful years this month! Unfortunately for some, they have loved deeply and lost. Be encouraged by my dear artist and author friend, Sara Thurman, on page 60. Whether single or partnered, loving well is important in all of our relationships. Not always easy! We are reminded in 1 Corinthians 16:14 to “Do everything in love!” Now even more words come to mind: forgiveness, kindness, goodness, and gentleness. Our relationship with God is the ultimate love story! His love is perfect. He pursues our affection, chases us down, and keeps His solemn oath and promise of His faithfulness...forever! We may fail in relationships with each other at times...but His love never ceases and it never fails. He forgives and never gives up on us! I’m still a student when it comes to the concept of love. My own prayer is to stay teachable and to love others well even amidst difficulties and disappointments. His love for us is a constant reminder for me to show grace, as I’ve been shown much grace! “And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love! Whoever lives in love, lives in God, and God in them.” (1 John 4:16)

Delight in Him and in each other!

Peace and blessings,

Psalm 37:4

Wedding Day Glow with Glam Esthetics by

Hi...I’m Heather! I’m a wife, mom, grandmother (Honey), daughter, sister, esthetician, beauty enthusiast, nail specialist and have a constant need for a creative outlet. With a passion for high-quality products and services, I have been involved in the beauty industry since 2003.

When I started my career over 19 years ago, I learned there is an art in itself to working with whatever we have personally been given. At first I was always focused on how things looked, but I quickly learned that whatever we are focusing on, whether it is on the outside or inside of our body, needs to be healthy. Even more importantly for me, there is a sincere desire to make every person that sits down in front of me feel better than when they initially walked through the door.

My mission is to offer my clients everything that they need to feel and look their best through all the latest beauty trends. Youth flies by at record speed, so it is extremely important to take care of our skin. IT IS AN INVESTMENT. I want to be part of the treatment world that can assist women or men in feeling the best that they can about themselves. I am truly drawn to the artistic side of the industry, so anything that involves being creative or personalizing an individual’s look is right up my alley. I love detailed work. Whether it is brows, lashes, permanent makeup, body waxing, body treatments or facials, I’ve got you covered. I understand that

life is hectic; Glam Esthetics by Heather is guaranteed to be here when you need me the most. Want to make certain that you look your best for your big day or a special occasion? It’s never too late to start, but if possible, give me a call six months in advance and let’s plan (women or men!) a course of action. I will strive for excellence, and aim to satisfy all of your beauty needs.

Beauty tip for your special day: Prepare the perfect canvas! On this day, you should continue to focus on hydration and soothing ingredients for your complexion. The ideal base for makeup is calm, moisturized, and firm skin. This allows the makeup artist to focus more on enhancing your natural glow rather than concealing or correcting. Be sure to use water-based products that provide deep hydration. Remember to get plenty of sleep, drink plenty of water, limit caffeine and alcohol, and most of all...

Relax! & Have Fun!

How did the two of you meet?

We met working at Pine Cove Bluffs, a Christian family camp where we were counselors!

Any fun facts?

Both of our college mascots were "The Bears." He went to University of Central Arkansas and I went to Baylor. Our entire relationship was long distance for two years!

When did you "know" and how?

I knew he was the one when I saw him serving families at camp, leading others well, and being obedient to what the Lord was calling him to do.

How did he propose?

He surprised me in Waco with family and friends!

When and where did you get married?

We were married on May 19, 2023 at Bella Woods in Midlothian, Texas.

Every moment of forever

Laughing, dancing and spending our time Loving each other for the rest of our lives

You make life so much better

I'm gonna love you...every moment of forever

Today is the first kiss, in my white dress

This Arkansas boy and Texas girl are closing the distance You're looking fine, boy

Now you're mine, boy

And after today we're never gonna say goodbye, boy Hand in hand with my best friend

Today we can finally begin Every moment of forever

Laughing, dancing and spending our time Loving each other for the rest of our lives

You make life so much better

I'm gonna love you...every moment of forever!

Lyrics to a song written by Ansley to Reese for their wedding...

THERAPY before Marriage?

while brides are most excited about planning the BIG day, attending engagement parties, and being showered, the grooms are excited about their bachelor party. Let’s be real, during the weeks and months leading up to the wedding this is our one chance to be the center of attention. As I tell my wife, “You got attention growing up, I didn’t” and then I bask in the glory of being recognized and publicly celebrated.

There are always those cliché bachelor parties that you don’t remember and hope no evidence of mayhem makes its way to social media. Of course, I wouldn’t know anything about that (*WINK*). Whether the plan is a nice dinner and drinks or “whatever happens in Vegas stays in Vegas,” any chance to hang out with the fellas is a good time. Who wants a good time when you can have a great time AND remember that great time the next day?!

Sometimes the best, most memorable ways to celebrate your last few days of freedom is a low key gathering that involves your best buds, delicious brown water, great cigars, and meat…A LOT of meat. Picture this: a beautiful historic home, a dozen of your closest bros, meats (plural) on the smoker, endless old fashioneds, and the Latitude Cigar mobile lounge. This is what we call a Therapy Session. Just consider it your premarital counseling. For all those Bachelors (or Bachelorettes) interested in therapy that won’t break the bank or your engagement, consider booking your ideal party now. Meat Therapy and Latitude Cigar are both local, Veteran-owned small businesses and we appreciate your continued support!

L A T I T U D ECigar

According to the Jimmy Buffet song, “Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes,” one’s perspective can change depending on vertical location on the globe. These lyrics, along with a blended passion of blue water sailing and enjoying a premium cigar with friends, have allowed for the birth of Latitude Cigars right here in Ellis county (or more precisely 32°23’04.9”N 96°51’05.7”W).

Originally just an idea of making quality cigars more accessible to people, we quickly realized there are a lot of misconceptions and bad advice out there regarding cigars. Having personally enjoyed cigars for several years with friends and family, it was time to “ReFresh our Cigar Attitude” and create a destination location for people to learn more and discover the cigar community.

In February 2022, on Charles’ 50th birthday, we launched Latitude Cigar’s mobile lounge in the backyard of our town’s first craft beer manufacturer and local taproom, Railport Brewery.Quickly we recognized that weddings, bachelor parties, golf tournaments, car shows, other breweries and food truck events were asking for us to enhance their events and bring premium cigars to the multitudes. Later in June, we had a unique opportunity to pair premium cigars with BBQ at a Father’s Day class by Meat Therapy at the beautiful historic J.S Berry House. This event gave us confirmation that many people have questions and want to learn more about cigars, as they do BBQ, and are open to explore and share experiences.

Opening a small business during the pandemic was certainly a challenge. We love our city and look forward to being active in our community for many years to come. We were so happy to open a brick-and-mortar lounge located in the Railport District which allows this passion for community and premium cigars to continue outside of these special events. Stop by sometime and learn about premium cigars, ask about blue water sailing adventures, or just say hi.

WESTERNWedding A Branded

The most romantic season of the year is upon us…Wedding Season! We love getting to know the western brides and grooms that visit us at Cheyenne Ranch so we can help them pull together and create the perfect wedding that represents their lifestyle. The entire wedding party, including the sponsors of the bride and groom, the bridesmaids and groomsmen, the grandparents, and all family and guests, are key parts of the vision; every detail is important with this day being one of their most important lifelong memories. With a western wedding, all the textures, jewelry, clothing, accessories, and even the gifts bring the whole look together!

It’s an Event

Leading up to the big day there are many festivities like showers, bachelor and bachelorette parties--and let’s not forget the honeymoon! It’s a detailed planning process. Brand your vision...your style matters!

The Outfits

Brides and Grooms are incorporating so many unique personal and unconventional touches that represent their love for the western lifestyle. Think warm autumn hues, fringe, lace, sequins, and other great textures and silhouettes for dresses and other fun outfits that match the style of each individual bridesmaid and guest. Here are some ideas to bring your vision to life. Try big statement accessories like a bridal cowboy hat and cowboy hats for the groom and his groomsmen. Unconventional jackets – like suede, tweeds, or leather with patterned or denim shirts paired with jeans for the guys. Gorgeous boots for all! Native American sterling with gemstones or turquoise jewelry will compliment the look!

Something Turquoise & Wedding Traditions

Adding turquoise to your bridal look, whether it be a bracelet, earrings, or a statement piece like a Squash Blossom necklace, will add a beautiful pop of color. Whether it’s new, old, or borrowed, it’s definitely “blue” and; based on wedding tradition, will help bring the promise of a “good and happy marriage.”

Gifts for WeddingtheParty

Giving thoughtful gifts to the wedding party and important loved ones is the best way to thank them for being a key part of the wedding – and your lives. Besides the “I Do’s”, asking family or friends to be by your side on this special day is part of the excitement! Gift them a pair of beautiful earrings, a Navajo Pearl bracelet, or a stunning necklace to compliment their bridesmaid dresses on the wedding day! Gifts for guys might include flasks, drinkware, ball caps, cufflinks, and other meaningful gifts they can continue to use for years while remembering this special time.

A Toast toYou!

When Cody and I reflect back on our own wedding, every special and unique detail and every person that shared it with us are all part of the captivating memories that we’ll have for the rest of our lives. Our hope and wish for every bride and groom... beautiful blessings and a life full of health, happiness, prosperity, and peace!

Until next time... Cheers!

Jordan & Jake

Jake and I first met when he attended the First Baptist Church of Maypearl. He had been stationed in Hawaii for the Navy where his pastor gave him a list of five churches to try once he arrived home. After trying out two of the churches on the list, he decided to attend First Baptist Church of Maypearl. Upon arrival, he was greeted with love by everyone there and he just so happened to sit directly in front of the row where I was sitting with my parents. One of the Deacons of the church walked up to our family and pointed towards Jake, telling us that he was new to the church and joked that he was single. My father, Joe, instantly walked up to Jake and introduced our (Davis) family to him, making sure he emphasized me...his daughter! After the service, my Dad invited Jake to lunch and then my parents left after we finished eating. Once my parents got back to their truck, my Dad immediately wrote in his prayer journal. Jake asked me to stay after eating so we could get to know each other a little better. We ended up hanging around together an additional two hours before exchanging numbers and then proceeded to spend every moment we could together from then on. Jake proposed to me on March 12 during a special Highland cow photo shoot, surrounded by family! We were married a few months later at The Graily in Waxahachie on June 24, 2023!

Jordan’s Advice: Communication is key, especially during the wedding planning process. The best thing we did to start our marriage was premarital classes with our pastor, Tony Sheffield. Try and remember to relax. Don’t let the stress of one day affect your relationship. Your wedding day goes by so fast, so take little moments to pause and soak it all in.

White Sand and Warm Sunsets

...in the Piney Woods!

28 LIVING-MAGAZINE.COM // AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2023

High Hill Farm is a secluded luxury resort with an event center, an adjoining restaurant and bar, a relaxing spa, a cute little boutique, hiking trails, a wine-producing vineyard and wellappointed bungalows. Around the corner from the farm, take a turn on High Hill Drive and you will find a totally unexpected surprise--High Hill Resort Community. Who would have thought there would be a development where Alys and Rosemary Beach, Seaside AND California’s river valley, along with a touch of northern Italy and Santorini seem to magically collide...in Arp, Texas! Wait...where is Arp?

Arp is centrally located between Dallas and Shreveport and about twenty miles southeast from charming Tyler. In other words, deep in the heart of the East Texas Piney Woods. The resort is “about 15 miles and three turns off I20” and down county roads lined with looming pines and trees so thick they seem to form a tunnel over the road. A little over two hours from Dallas, the only sky-scrapers here are the trees!

Road-tripping wanderers, future wedding parties, meeting attendees, and second home buyers...plan a trip to High Hill Farm. Spend some time getting to know the energetic visionary, Jason Romano, and his beautiful wife, Sharon. The spirited couple who not only own, but live on the property, have unapologetically traded the hustle and bustle of Dallas for what Jason refers to as “the great exhale.” There is indeed an unequivicable calming sense of peace everywhere! Every curated aspect of High Hill has been carefully thought out. The couple had honeymooned on Florida’s 30A many years ago. It captured their hearts and has remained one of their favorite vacation destinations. That feeling of a slow exhale combined with the beauty of the coast continues to be their main inspiration for what they want guests to experience. Along with their strong faith, it is a driving force in the dream of what is now High Hill. The topography of the heavily wooded hills and landscaping, the architectural design, and watercolor hues seem to transport you to an environment that mixes several of their favorite places.

Bungalows and a Barn

Choose from well-appointed accommodations in one of the eight sun-washed bungalows or there are rooms and a suite with various options in the barn. Upon arrival, I filled out menu choices and “breakfast in bed” was delivered promptly at 9am! The private fenced in patio was a perfect place to enjoy a cup of coffee. I’ve never seen so many dragonflies and butterflies. Magical!

Côte Restaurant & Napolean Bar

Your dining experience has a view of the pool and the vineyard, perfect for sunset watching. Food is locally sourced and farm-to-table options are grown right on the property. I loved the design of Napolean bar! You will find craft cocktails, specialty beers, and a nice wine selection, including High Hill’s signature wines.

Grace Spa

Allow time at Grace Spa as part of your exhale. Choose from a Swedish, deep tissue, or hot stone massage. Absolutely amazing!

The Event Venue

The Odeon is the main event area and can entertain 250 guests. The room is an elegant “canvas” just waiting for your wedding ideas and decor. For larger gatherings, your celebration can incude the expansive lawn to accommodate an additional 200 guests. The grounds are well-manicured with pretty flower beds and ready for open air or white tent events. Additonal sites include The Willows and The Gazebo. Côte Restaurant will handle all of your culinary needs onsite.

High Hill Resort Community

What exactly is High Hill’s concept as a master-planned community? To create an extraordinary opportunity for residents or guests who enjoy gorgeous homes, luxury resort services, boutique shopping, exquisite dining, live music, hiking... and even Topgolf in a one-of-a-kind development! All of this and more is on the horizon at this meticulously well-thought out village where walking is encouraged and a sense of connectedness nurtured. We left the farm and Jason drove Sharon and I over to Hill Top Drive. When we pulled in, I was immediately mesmerized by the property. It is all very much a work in progress, and you really have to stand in the white sand just before dusk and take in all of the expansive beauty of the painted sunset, the almost turquoise water, the wispy beach grass, white houses and the wooded surroundings. A beautiful chapel will sit on one of the highest majestic sites to overlook the newly planted vineyards, the pool, the beach, amphitheater and more. There are over 100 amazing homesites available for purchase. The white homes will be designed and built by High Hill and can also be managed and rented later. They have an incredible design team which is led by Yvette Leihgeber...another highly creative visionary, interior designer, and artist. Her fresh coastal style and pieces of art are unmistakable. You’ll see her extra touches scattered throughout both the resort and the custom homes. The homes are priced as fully furnished! Jason quips, “Just bring your toothbrush and your wardrobe. It will have everything in it you will need.” It’s all designed to perfection, styled and color-coordinated; and so plush and comfortable. Pure luxury!

If you enjoy this type of lifestyle, you can rent one of the completed homes and get a feel for what it’s like to live there. Let’s just say if I only could... there’s a chance I would. I can at least dream...totally my vibe!

Jason is affectionately nicknamed “Walt” by Sharon. Now that I’ve seen his future village plans, I understand the nickname. She says his mind is always working. He’ll wake up early and say “I have an idea!” She braces herself and says “Now what?!!” He is the first to admit that Sharon is an integral part of all of his visions. He may be the grand dreamer and doer of building luxury homes, resorts and developments, but her gift is hospitality and it shines. Loved seeing them interact as a down-to-earth power couple. I hope to return in cooler weather to check the progress. Maybe I’ll enjoy a picnic from Côte near a hammock on the beach!

From its humble beginnings as a piece of idle dirt with only a past, Hera’s Haven has been transformed into a living, breathing haven of beauty with a future, a soul, and a heart. Its purpose is now to serve as the stage for a beautiful union and the story of the ring--the miracle circle--that binds two in foreverness, witnessed by others, and recorded in the book of promises one to another. A place where prayers are spoken, memories are born and not easily forgotten. Where family and friends join together in community to bless and shower with heartfelt wishes of happiness reaching the heavens. A place where those in attendance witness the transformation where once two is now one. That once idle piece of dirt, now touched by God’s hand, has become a sacred and special place of dedication and commitment. The start of the journey of love that has only new beginnings and no end.

How did y’all meet?

We met on a dating app, actually! We didn’t talk to each other much on the app. It was always very friendly and short conversations. We eventually got each other’s social info and didn’t talk again until months later, but hit it off eventually when the timing was right!

Any fun facts?

We both have been near each other all along, but we had never actually cross paths!

When did you “know” and how?

Hers: I knew when I realized he was my safe space. I felt safe & at peace.

His: I knew when I realized I was taking things more seriously. When I saw how much my family, especially my grandma, loved her.

How did he propose?

We went on a picnic one day and were just having random conversations. He eventually brought up getting married and asked if it was something I wanted to do. Fast forward to about a month or two later, we drove to my parents so he could ask for my hand in marriage. After we left, he proposed to me outside of their house!

When & where did you get married and how did you pick the venue?

We got married April 22, 2023 at Willow Creek in Waxahachie. When we were touring venues, we fell in love with the wedding venue’s owner. She was funny, good with people and very welcoming!

Honeymoon Destination:

We have not taken our honeymoon because we got pregnant! We are totally looking forward to going to the mountains in Colorado next year!

Advice for couples:

Life really is short, don’t waste it on being mad at each other. You never know when your last day will be together.

Paige & Ryan

Ryan and I recently got married on April 29, 2023 at his family farm in Italy, Texas. We gathered roughly 100 of our closest family and friends to celebrate our marriage. Our love story has been a long time in the making...7 years!

We have “known of each other” for as far back as I can remember. I recall seeing him in middle school and us having mutual friends in high school. As embarrassing as it is to admit, it all began over a message from him on Instagram inviting me to dinner. We totally hit it off! Shortly after that, I knew there was something special between us. Throughout our seven years together, we have stood by each other through many exciting life events, including the welcoming of our daughter, Harper.

Ryan and I, along with Harper, share a love for cows and farm life. On May 28, 2022, Ryan insisted that we had to feed the cow at sunrise. Little did I know that one heifer would be extra special!! Ryan was leading her out of the herd with an ear tag asking, “Will you marry me?”

I said “Yes!!” We both knew we wanted to get married at the family farm in the springtime. The farm is where his parents were married over 30 years ago, and of course that is where we had just become engaged! We wanted our special day to be simple and intimate and allow the beauty of the property to speak.

Paige’s Advice: Splurge on the photographer and videographer. The night flew by and having so many photos and a beautiful video to look back on was huge for us!

Katie & Walker

Walker and I met through work. He is a project engineer for an oil company and I am an office manager in Midland, Texas. When we were first introduced, Walker was just graduating engineering school (it was his last week living in Midland) and was going to move to Houston for work. It was my first week living in Midland, so I truly didn’t put a whole lot of thought into him. It’s funny when someone asks because I still, to this day, remember my initial thought when I saw him for the first time being “Oh wow. I wonder if all the guys in West Texas wear this much jewelry. I do not like that!” He moved to Houston and I began my work in Midland. A year later, he moved back to Midland for work. Several months after that he sent me a couple of messages on Facebook, which I never opened or responded to because I just wasn’t interested! We ran into each other on my birthday a couple of months later and had a great time! He continued to be persistent and I realized how much I liked him...and the rest is really history!

When did you “know” and how?

I’m really not sure there was an exact moment of when I knew. I think he just really grew on me over time. Walker is such a hard working, caring, “above and beyond” guy and I think there just came a point after a few months when I genuinely couldn’t imagine life with anyone else but him!

How did he propose?

Walker proposed on the beach in Orange Beach, Alabama! We had been dating for two years. He told me we were just running down by the water to take pictures before dinner, picked out a random mother and daughter strolling, told them he was going to propose, and they took a video and photographed the whole thing! It was perfect!

When & where did you get married and how did you pick the venue?

We got married at Willow Creek in Waxahachie on March 25, 2023. I knew I wanted to marry in the DFW area in the springtime, and once I visited Willow Creek and saw all they had to offer and how kind they were...I was in love!

Honeymoon Destination?

We flew out to Bora Bora the day after the wedding, for two weeks! We stayed in an over-the-water bungalow and it was literally the trip of a lifetime! Fun fact-- I found out I was pregnant the week after we got back and we are expecting a little girl, Anna Kathryn, in December!

Katie’s advice for couples: Communication really is the key!

Bonnie Jean & Drew

Iwas a bartender in NYC in the summer of ‘16 when I went through a bad breakup and needed a break from the city. My sister had moved to Texas with her family a few years prior, so she flew me down to stay with her for a little while. What was supposed to be a week-long stay turned into an extended vacation. Well, one night my sister brought me over to her best friend Davecia’s house who lived a few minutes away, and while we were making dinner, Davecia’s neighbor walked in! Her neighbor happened to be the man I am married to today, because as soon as I saw him, I very strangely and inexplicably knew that Drew was “the one” and that my life would forever be in Texas. Now Davecia is my neighbor, also!

Bonnie Jean’s Advice: While you are wedding planning, compromise with each other, but not anyone else. The only people that matter on your wedding day are the two of you, so don’t feel pressured by family, friends, and loved ones when they start saying you should do things a certain way. They may mean well, but it’s not their day. Do what you want and what works for you two, and don’t think twice! You’ll have so much more fun that way. Marriage is the same way; stay honest and true to each other, find what works for you, and don’t worry about the “…well back in my day…” comments. Have fun!

Lyndsey & Andrew

My name is Lyndsey Prentice (formerly Dickerson). I’m actually writing this on our one year anniversaryfunny enough!

My husband, Andrew, and I got married on July 7, 2022 at the Blue Lakes outside of Breckenridge, CO. It was the two of us, my parents, and our photographer. We had originally planned to do a traditional wedding, but instead opted for an intimate elopement that doubled as our honeymoon.

Andrew and I met in our 7th grade science class at Red Oak Jr High. We were put into a lab group together for frog dissection, probably to the dismay of our teacher, because we kept trying to make each other laugh! That hasn’t changed. We had our first daughter in 2017, got engaged in 2019, had our second daughter in 2020, and finally married in 2023. Now, I’m a middle school teacher in Red Oak myself so it’s funny to see things come like this come full circle. We still live in Ellis County and have two beautiful girls!

Brandi & Dalton

My name is Brandi Butler and I grew up in Waxahachie and graduated in 2006. I have worked for Baylor since 2011, and before that I worked at the Hope Clinic and also at Chili’s in Waxahachie. I am definitely a local girl and we used as many local vendors as we could for our big day. I took so much pride in planning all of the details and absolutely loved everything about our wedding!

I married Dalton Butler on November 19, 2022 at Old Bison Ranch, It was the coldest day of the year to date in 2022! Dalton is from Farmersville and we met on Bumble during the year of Covid, 2020. On September 19, 2020, we went to a Dallas Stars watch party/game that American Airlines held at the center as our first date and we have been together ever since! On the evening of our one year dating anniversary, Dalton took my hand (after we came home from dinner), brought me to our backyard, got down on one knee...and proposed!

Fast forward to a year and two months later our wedding day was nothing short of magical! Despite how cold it was outside, all of my planning and dreams came true that day. Every single detail (which are my favorite parts of our wedding) were executed flawlessly.

Brandi’s Advice:

Planning a wedding is super stressful, so remember to enjoy it and especially the days leading up to the wedding and the day of the wedding, it truly does go by so fast. Continue to date each other before and after your wedding. The only marriage advice I have is to put God in the center of your marriage. Study your spouse, learn their love language, and pray often. Celebrate the big things, and let go of the little!

Makayla & Coleman

We just recently got married on May 20, 2023 in Alvarado, TX at The Springs Event Venue. It was the most beautiful day!

How We Met: We actually met online in college and met up a couple of times then went our separate ways, but always kept in touch. Coleman would continue to try to get together, but I was always too stubborn to take the chance. In the summer of 2021 we went on our first official date, and we were engaged 6 months later! I guess it’s how the saying goes, “When you know, you know!”

How He Proposed: Coleman had one of my photographer friends reach out and pretend she needed a couple to pose for her portfolio at a new spot and she wanted us to do it. He surprised me and proposed at the shoot!

Makayla’s Advice: I loved the wedding planning process and watching all of my visions come to life on the most magical day! It was all so perfect and I relive it over and over through all of the photos. I just want to tell all brides that no matter the circumstance, the stress, or even if things go wrong; it’s still about you and your partner in the end. No one else’s opinions matter. It’s a day about you and your partner. All of the stress and planning will be worth it. It will go by so fast, so take it all in. Be in the moment with everyone and enjoy your special day!

It All Began by the Ferris Wheel...

The year it all began was 1950 in downtown Waxahachie. The Optimist Club's main fundraiser was hosting their annual carnival around the Ellis County Courthouse. This was back in the day when two 14 year old girls could walk downtown and enjoy the activities without chaperones! My friend and I were standing by the big ferris wheel when two guys came up and started talking. My friend knew them, but all I knew was that one of them was the best looking guy I had ever seen!

He had just graduated from Waxahachie High School and was much older than me...17!! His name was Charley Wilson, better known at that time as “Balky.” His grandmother tagged him with that name (I wonder why?) After 68 years of marriage I don’t wonder why anymore! At that initial moment, our love story began. Charley worked at C. A. Wilson Plumbing Co, which his family had owned since 1934. The next week I began my four years at WHS. We dated off and on for three years. He said he didn’t want to go steady because he wanted some other guy :( to take me to all the banquets & proms. In May 1953, he was drafted into the US Army and was stationed in California for two years. Before he left for basic training, we talked about getting married when he planned to return in 1955.

I graduated WHS on May 31, 1954, and went to work at Texas Power & Light Co. on June 1, 1954. I received a scholarship to Mary Hardin Baylor, but all I wanted to do was get married that next year! Charley came home in December 1954, and (without any big celebration like couples have today) we became officially engaged! Our wedding was the first one in the new sanctuary of Waxahachie First Methodist Church on July 8, 1955.

STORY & PHOTOS PROVIDED BY IRIS WILSON
58 LIVING-MAGAZINE.COM // AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2023

Our family grew from two to six by adding four sons in just 16 short years. When anyone had asked me what I wanted to be when I “grew up”, I always said “a good wife and mother.” This wife and mother also became a mother-in-law to four “daughters”. In 1983 the extra blessings started coming! In 15 years we had eight granddaughters and three grandsons. Now, by adding more grands by marriage we have 23 and even more blessings with 19 great-grands!! Our Wilson family now numbers 51 with more to come next year! Charley retired as one of the family business owners of C. A. Wilson Co. in 2016. We closed our Trend Development Real Estate Partnership in 2022. Our son Justin and his wife, Denise, continue the family business in a new location on N. Hwy 77 in Waxahachie.

On our 60th wedding anniversary, our family totally surprised us with a big celebration at The Harbor on Possum Kingdom Lake. It was an amazing place owned by our oldest son, Darrell. We enjoyed many fun family celebrations there, and Charley and I always danced to the song, “Sweet Pea.” All of these special times can be summed up with a sign that hangs in our home breezeway...

“The Best Place to be is Together! ”

Happy and blessed, we just celebrated our 68th anniversary on July 8th by sharing our traditional Braum’s Banana Split. Charley turned 90 years old in June and I am 87. What else is there to say except that... “God has been so good!!!” His Word says we are blessed for the purpose to be a blessing. Together as a couple, this is what we’ve been seeking to do in our family, church, business and community throughout all of our years together.

A reminder in Ephesians 5:25 & 33: “Husbands, go all out in your love for your wives, exactly as Christ did for the church--a love marked by giving, not getting” and “Nevertheless, let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she respects her husband.”

God bless you all...invite Him on your journey! Numbers 6: 24-26

THE GOODNESS OF Celebrating Marriage

Marriage is to be celebrated! I believe it is God’s idea, a holy communion and covenant between two people “until death do us part,” and one of His greatest gifts to mankind.

I want to share the story of our marriage of nearly 35 years. Wayman and I were a unique couple; not supposed to get married because our circumstances were outside the handbook of marriages that would last. But God! Oh, let me tell you the difference in our ages, with Wayman being twenty years older than me, the fact that he had been married for twenty years to his first wife and divorced and that he also had a fourteen year old son did not push us apart, but only connected our hearts even more.

What are the secrets to having a good marriage? A marriage where you find joy every day and are each other’s best friends? Marriage is work because it is two different people coming together as one. You have to stay on the same side, not becoming enemies but working through all the “stuff” and hard times.

In my recent book, 27,000 Miles in Love: An Epic Marriage Story GuidedbyFaithLeavingaLegacy, I share about the nitty gritty of our marriage. We walked just about every day of our marriage and it added up to over 27,000 miles. Wow! So much happened in our communication on these walks. Wayman went to heaven in January 2020 after a nearly 35 year blessed marriage. My book is a vulnerable story of a husband and

wife. I believe it will encourage you to focus on clear communication by taking a daily walk, increasing respect and honor in your marriage in ways you never imagined!

SUN TIPS:

Use sunscreen with SPF 30+ or higher. Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours. Wear sun protective clothing.

Detect Skin Cancer...Early!

As summer rages on here in North Texas, remember that we get a ton of sun exposure. With sun exposure, over time, comes the risk for developing skin cancers. Here are some signs of the most common types of skin cancer and how to detect them early.

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common type of skin cancer but also the least aggressive type. BCCs grow slowly and have the lowest chance of spreading elsewhere in the body. Remember that BCCs are still skin cancers and can be locally destructive. BCC often starts as a pink bump with a “pearly” appearance that can be tender and bleed.

Squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) are more worrisome as they can grow more quickly and have a higher chance of spreading elsewhere in the body, or metastasizing. SCCs can also be quite destructive locally if not treated in a timely manner. They often start as scaly or crusted bumps and can become painful and prone to bleeding and ulceration. Both BCCs and SCCs most commonly occur on the face, but they can occur in really any area where someone has had sunburns or a lot of sun exposure, including the scalp, ears, neck, trunk, arms, and legs.

To protect yourself, remember to apply sunscreen to all sun-exposed areas. Use sunscreens with SPF 30 or higher that protects against both UVA and UVB (contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide). Reapply sunscreen every 1 to 2 hours while outside and after swimming and sweating. Wear sun protective clothing: wide brimmed hat, pants, long sleeves, sunglasses.

If you notice any new skin growth that is not healing, growing in size, painful, or bleeding, contact your dermatologist. We’ll be happy to help you out!
