his Valentine’s Day, give the gift that will not only melt in their mouth, but will melt their heart as well. No more waiting until the last minute to score some chocolatecovered strawberries and grocery store flowers only to have your significant other look at the receipt of your purchase made on February fourteenth (who does that anyways?!). According to my wife, there is nothing better than receiving a gift that required thought and effort, is homemade, AND edible. The sweetheart ribeye is a triple whammy that is guaranteed to win you bonus points…you can thank me later... you’re welcome!

We recently celebrated a special occasion out at a steakhouse. I was warned not to order steak as I can typically do better at home with a salt-brined, well-seasoned reverse sear. Of course I didn’t listen. Well, I was disappointed, and I had to admit that she was right. So do yourself a favor whether it’s for Valentine’s Day or another special occasion, stay home and make a meat heart for your sweetheart. You may be wondering... what is a “meat heart” and how do I make one? You’ve got a friend in me because I am here to salvage your day and quite possibly your relationship!

If you’re a cutting corners type of person, you can purchase a ribeye cut into the shape of a heart from our local HEB or many other grocery store chains. If you want to be a stud, you’ll make your own meat heart. Trust me, this will earn you major bonus points. Head to the butcher and have them cut you a fresh two-inch thick prime ribeye. On a cutting board, set the steak on its side fat cap up, grab your best knife and butterfly the ribeye through the middle being careful not to cut all the way through it. Open it up by laying it flat and trim off any unnecessary fat around the edges to create the perfect heart shape.

For this type of steak cook, I would use the hot and fast method (right on par for your romantic evening, *wink). Get your grill or smoker going at a medium high heat. Put the steak over a direct flame flipping it every minute or so until you reach your desired temperature. I prefer it medium rare, so I pull it around 128 degrees internally. Let it rest with a resting butter for 10-15 minutes. Garnish with some fresh rosemary, garlic, and finishing salt. Serve your meat heart to your sweetheart and prepare to impress.

An Interview with Beauty Expert Tracey Richardson

Q: Tracey...what inspired you to open Tru Love Salons?

A:

I spent years working in Uptown Dallas operating my own salon boutique in the Design District. When COVID hit, like many of us, I found myself homebound and wondering what was next. I had been so busy for years going north of Ellis County, I hadn’t noticed the burgeoning culture of the Waxahachie downtown district. As a history fanatic, I took one look at the intriguing Rogers Hotel in all of its historic glory, and I immediately knew I wanted to open a high-end blow-out bar/full service salon. I love bringing a little bit of Dallas to Waxahachie with a glamorous menu of cut, color, styling, braiding, extensions, blow outs, lashes, microblading, permanent makeup, facials, body contouring, waxing, Princess Parties, and more!

Q: What is one of your favorite memories since you opened Tru Love? A:

The grand opening of our recent expansion was pretty spectacular! We have doubled in size...growing from 1,400 square feet to 3,000 with the help of Chasco Interiors. It was so heart-warming to feel the support of clientele from both Dallas and Ellis County on that memorable day! Many people were simply walking by and popped in to see our “everything pink glam” salon. I was overwhelmed with the pride and joy shown by our incredible team, many of whom have been here throughout all the construction and growing pains. I looked around, humbled and yet confident, at all of them; including the young stylists that I’ve mentored...and I am so very proud of them. It was a day I’ll never forget.

Q: Will you share a little bit about your experience as a stylist? A:

I have been in the hair and beauty industry for more than 25 years. I had the honor of being featured in D Magazine and have received recognition from Modern Luxury Magazine as one of 2016’s “Stylists of the Year.” I have worked Fashion Week in New York and have studied with celebrity stylists. I learned to “perfect my blonde” with over three years of training under “hair guru” Michael Canalé.

Q: What is your idea of a perfect downtown Waxahachie date?

A:

ho doesn’t absolutely love the dreamy idea of staying at a century old Texas mansion...especially one that sits majestically on a neighborhood hill in the heart of Dallas? Upon your arrival at Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek, you will feel like a personal guest entering “private residential ambiance” at the evocative estate-turned-extraordinaryhotel. Recognizing its value as a precious gem that sparkled with grandeur opulence in Dallas history, Rosewood acquired the property in 1979 to protect the luxurious site and expand into an exquisite restaurant, bar, and 142-room hotel. The mansion’s iconic history, charm and affluent style was preserved in the magnificent transformation. The veranda was enclosed in glass to create more indoor dining, still leaving a spacious terrace area designated for seating and events. A pool, fitness studio and additional special event areas were added. To commemorate the 40th anniversary, the property recently unveiled a must-see spectacular and perfectly serene redesign. The Mansion’s indicative quatrefoil motif is cleverly echoed in visual elements. Suggested guest experiences and local excursions stay current and on trend with local culture. Solo travelers, couples, families, business executives, and celebrities all love to wine, dine, and stay at Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek.

The Welcome Guests are graciously welcomed with warmth and smiles by the hotel valet attendants. They are polished, professional, and also quite proud of Duncan, the grey feline “guest greeter.” For well over a decade the hotel cat (with attitude!) sits perfectly poised at the hotel entrance, with a rhinestone encrusted dish and a petite brass bed...complete with linens. At check-in, you’ll find unmatched customer service. I quickly became intrigued with the rare dedication of the accommodating staff and the number of years each of them has been with Rosewood. I made it a point to strike up a conversation with just about every employee I encountered to inquire how long they have been with The Mansion. Many have been there for decades...up to 42 years! A happy, well-trained staff certainly makes all the difference!

The Opulent Entrance

Entering the rusty-pink stucco estate, you are visually transported to a European destination. No expense was spared as the original owners and architect traveled relentlessly to gather ideas, purchase architectural elements, and collect elaborate furnishings and accessories from all over the world. The 10,000 square foot mansion had all the grandiosity of a 16th century Renaissance Italy estate and one of the first private elevator residences in the area. A glimpse into the entrance, peeking back through the pair of 19th century Spanish cathedral carved wooden doors, showcases the famed cantilevered staircase and the two Rosa Verona marble pillars dating from the 1500’s. The stunning craftsmanship in every treasured detail of the original residence is fascinating!

A room of peaceful indulgence...a soothing monochromatic palette mixed with muted touches of color…oversized black and white architectural photos framed in black, gold, and eggshell. Luxe linens, a mix of damask and mahogany wood paneled walls, leather furnishings, and pretty mirrors. No less than a thousand decorative upholstery tacks perfectly streamline design details. My favorite touches...like jewelry throughout...the glamorous satin hardware and oh that white oval tub! I loved using the signature toiletries at this hotel. The air fills with a fresh, earthy scent as the hot water falls from the rain shower while lathering with La Bottega’s (D.S. & Durga) Cowboy Grass products. The tongue-in-cheek label reads...”Perfect for robbing banks on horseback.” Well…hmm...that’s certainly an adventurous thought to start the day! Room service delivered a picture-perfect breakfast with a fresh coral rose...and the best homemade whipped cream for my coffee!

The Mansion Bar

It’s the little things. The unassuming, deepest midnight blue linen cocktail napkin squares that add a touch of elegance under every drink. It’s the big things. The welcoming smiles, sparkling eyes, the stories, and trivia ready to be shared by every bartender and barback. It’s connection. The engaging and entertaining Texas margarita lesson, savory seasonal bites, signature cocktails, a curated wine list, weekday social hours, and live music weekends. The estate’s original kitchen and dining room transitioned into the now famous bar. Fashionable silhouettes are poised in the sultry lighting among various textures. Sitting areas are candlelit and inviting with rich velvets, wood paneling, wallpaper, art in gilded ornate frames, comfortable leather, and the amber shades of circular leaded glass windows. The poetic chatter of various languages is a confirmation...this destination is internationally embraced.

The Mansion Restaurant

Over the top luxury! The original library and living room of the estate were transformed into their fine dining restaurant. Completely surrounded by architectural beauty (oooh that ceiling and fireplace!) and an impeccable staff, I enjoyed the company of at least five elegant gentlemen overseeing my dining experience. Attentive and amazing...teamwork and professionalism at its finest. Personable and humble Chef de Cuisine Brenden Frankel took the time to sit and chat about his culinary experience, lavish dishes, and delectable flavors.

The warm rusty pink stucco, whimsical tree lanterns casting magical light, decorative patio tables, cozy fireside lounge seating, and a view of the Turtle Creek neighborhood create a memorable outdoor experience. You don’t have to miss a workout...utilize the modern health and fitness studio! Take the time to wind down and relax by the glamorous pool. Designated spaces with various “personalities” are tucked in different areas of the property for your special event!

Experiences&Excursions

Before your stay, speak with the hotel concierge on the most current suggested experiences and excursions based upon the season and availability. For instance, plan for a driver to deliver you to the colorful tile steps of Highland Park Village that lead upstairs to the creative world of Miron Crosby for a “Boot Experience”. You will find yourself in a very well-branded atmosphere (complete with mini bar) and a delightful staff ready to assist amidst their gallery of artistic boots. Sister owners Lizzie Means Duplantis and Sarah Means are living their best life influencing footwear and beyond. Choose from gorgeous boots in stock or have fun designing a custom pair! An exclusive tall dress boot was designed in honor of Rosewood Mansion’s recent 40th anniversary. Open their branded box to the rich smell of fine leather. The boot shaft is scattered with the recognizable quatrefoil motifs which are visually repeated throughout the hotel, and the icy blue piping runs down the side of the soft cognac and cream leather. Miron Crosby carries boots for the entire family, so consider making this a part of your Dallas adventure!

Like a divine gift to my sixth-floor balcony view...a glorious sunset was painted perfectly over the pool and lawn area. Later...boots up...I relax poolside. Nighttime falls peacefully upon Dallas. Lights dance and shadows grow. Reflections of looming pillars, ornate capitals, and decorative iron gates are a reminder for me to pause and also reflect on my gratitude...such a beautiful stay! WHERE TO PRESERVE & WHERE TO REVAMP

Being a fourth generation resident of Ellis County, the adoration and appreciation of historical homes runs deep – but styling a historic home can pose some unique difficulties. How do you incorporate antique pieces without going overboard? Where should you preserve...and where can you revamp? Read along for tips to help you navigate and successfully master the styling of a historic home.

Historical architecture is worth celebrating –When styling historic homes, embrace their timeless aesthetic. Unique features such as custom millwork, pocket doors adorned with intricate hardware, and antique fireplaces are worth celebrating. Let these features be the focal point of each room and allow their character to dictate the floor plan of the space as well as the direction. Arrange area rugs so custom details in the hardwoods are not covered. Keep the pocket doors slightly open to show off ornate hardware. Remove heavy draperies to reveal original trim work. The character of an older home cannot be replicated, so be certain they are the center of attention and foundation for styling.

Foundational pieces – For the furniture pieces in each space, opt for traditional and timeless, with one or two ornate pieces. Incorporate a sofa with angled arms and tapered legs for casual elegance. Use armchairs and ottomans to increase seating and allow areas to congregate. Source a coffee table with curvy legs and carved wood details to break up straight lines. Historic homes (because of their age and delicate details) can feel stuffy and unwelcome – use soft furnishings and textiles to create a warm inviting space.

Lighting – Switching out lighting is an easy and cost effective way to bring personality to a space. In a historic home, I’d recommend selecting fixtures that are transitional in style with an aged patina. An aged finish gives a vintage feel with an updated look. If budget does not allow a lighting update, switching out the bulbs alone can work wonders. Remove warm, often yellow-casting halogen or incandescent bulbs and switch them out for fresher LED bulbs. That alone can make a tremendous difference!

Accessories – When styling historic homes, antique pieces and heirlooms are pivotal. Source from antique stores locally that are filled with treasures. Frequent Round Top or Antique Alley to score pieces with individuality. A space that is only accessorized with contemporary items will feel out of place in a historic home. Source vintage rugs with natural wear and “lived in” aesthetic. Reframe art in vintage frames. Preserve original cabinetry but update with new hardware. Be careful not to go overboard with the number of accessories...stay simple and minimal. Let the surfaces breathe. Doing so will allow the beautiful historical architecture to shine.

Navigating through Valentine’s Day after the loss of a significant loved one, your life partner, can be extremely devastating. The feelings of being all alone and the question of, how are you going to go on, can be unbearable. My journey was excruciating at times after losing my significant partner of 18 years. I was determined to live my best life and not let this destroy me! I leaned heavily on the Lord to help me through this valley that I was placed in.

I started attending a grief group which enabled me to learn the process of grief while being surrounded by people that were experiencing the same thing that I was. This helped me to HEAL, to understand and to grow, to allow me to be victorious in living my life to the fullest.

I found the tools I needed to fast track me to living fully and presently through utilizing the 12 steps of recovery, journaling, praying and meditating. I encourage you to find the tools you need to cope and manage grief so that you do not get stuck in grief. I have seen many people that are not able to move on with their lives. I feel that God has given me a mission to help those that grieve by helping them move forward by taking steps that they may not even know they need or know how to.

Lead by example: Children learn by observing the adults in their lives. Show them what love and kindness look like by being kind and loving to others and by treating everyone with respect.

Encourage empathy: Help children understand how others feel by asking them to put themselves in someone else’s shoes. Encourage them to talk about their own feelings and to be sensitive to the feelings of others.

Practice active listening: Listen to your child’s thoughts and feelings without judgment. Give them your full attention and let them know that you understand what they are saying.

Show appreciation and gratitude: Express appreciation and gratitude for the people in your child’s life. Teach them to say “please” and “thank you” and to show appreciation for the things others do for them.

Model healthy relationships: Show children what healthy relationships look like by treating your partner, friends and family members with kindness and respect.

Read stories about love and kindness: Reading books to children is a great way to teach them about love and kindness. Look for books that feature characters who show love and kindness in different ways.

Practice forgiveness and apologize: Teach children the importance of forgiveness and apologize when you make mistakes.

Use positive reinforcement: Praise children for showing love and kindness. It will help to build a positive association with these behaviors and encourage them to repeat it.

How to Know if You Qualify

for Weight-Loss Surgery

Your body weight and your health conditions could mean that you’re a candidate for surgical treatment for obesity

If you’re overweight or obese, you may wonder if weightloss surgery could help you lose excess pounds and improve your health. Whether or not you might qualify depends on a few considerations. According to the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), three main factors play a part in the decision.

1. YOUR BODY MASS INDEX (BMI)

To qualify for weight-loss surgery, in most cases, you need to have a BMI of 40 or more. “Your BMI is calculated from your height and weight, and for most people, being 100 or more pounds overweight means your BMI is 40 or more,” said weight-loss surgeon Timothy Kelly, MD. You can calculate your BMI on the ASMBS website at asmbs.org/patients/bmicalculator.

2. YOUR OTHER HEALTH CONDITIONS

“It’s common for people who are overweight or obese to have other chronic health conditions,” said weightloss surgeon Watson Roye, MD. So, you may qualify for weight-loss surgery if you have a BMI of 35 or more, plus at least one of these other diseases or conditions:

• Type 2 diabetes

• High blood pressure

• Sleep apnea or other breathing disorders

• Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease

• Osteoar thritis

• Abnormal cholesterol levels

• Cer tain gastrointestinal disorders

• Hear t disease

3. YOUR ATTEMPTS AT LOSING WEIGHT

To qualify for weight-loss surgery, you need to have tried other methods for losing weight. “If dieting, exercise, medication, or other weight loss strategies haven’t been successful for you, you may be a candidate,” said weightloss surgeon Mazen Iskandar, MD. If you’ve been able to lose weight in the past but you’ve regained the weight, you could still qualify for surgery.

WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU QUALIFY?

If you meet these requirements, you can likely start down the path toward weight-loss surgery. But you’ll need to take some additional steps to ensure that you’re likely to succeed. You’ll need a psychological evaluation to make sure any mental health conditions are under control or being treated. You’ll talk to a nutritionist, so you understand the changes you’ll need to make in your diet. You may need to start losing weight before you have surgery. And you’ll need to have your medical and surgical history and your lab tests evaluated, to make sure any other health conditions won’t adversely affect your outcomes.

Most private insurance plans and Medicare cover weightloss surgery. If you’re a candidate, you’ll want to find out if your insurance company has additional requirements. For example, they might need you to have your surgery performed at a center that includes a team of experts along with your surgeon, such as a nutritionist, an exercise specialist, and a mental health professional. And they may want you to have your surgery at a facility that meets certain standards for quality. If you don’t have insurance coverage, you can still qualify for weight-loss surgery, but you would need to pay for it out of pocket.

For ten years in a row Andrew and I spent a week in the California wine country. We knew our way around Napa Valley pretty well, driving above the fog up Spring Mountain Road to Cain Vineyards and through the forests of Mt. Veeder to the beautiful Hess Winery. Other days we traveled along Napa’s Silverado Trail sampling from the barrels of Stags Leap, Silverado and Clos Du Val. After a couple of days we would venture over to the laidback County of Sonoma and wind our way through the Russian River Valley, and the off-beat roads of Dry Creek. We brought home award winning wines for under $20 per bottle back then, building a nice collection with big bold cabernets, crisp chardonnays, and jammy zinfandels. Then, as quickly as Napa started producing world class wines, they began building lavish new wineries and charging a fee in their ritzy tasting rooms. Don’t get me wrong, we love visiting Napa, but it seemed as if it was becoming a Vegas style destination, instead of the quaint relaxed valley we had grown to love. We worried the Sonoma winemakers would soon follow suit.

We stopped going to the wine country and started exploring the well priced wines of Spain, Chilean Malbecs, and Australian Shiraz, but when American Airlines offered flights to San Francisco for $200, we decided to head back and see if Sonoma was staying true to its roots.

After a Sunday morning drive over San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge, we sat down to a wonderful brunch at The Girl & the Figin in Sonoma Plaza in just over one hour. Before we left, our waiter wrapped up several selections of local artisan cheese for us. We grabbed a baguette in the bakery a few doors down and headed up Highway 12 for an afternoon of wine tasting at B. R. Cohn, Valley of the Moon, and Kenwood. You get the sense that in Sonoma, life is being lived

the way it was meant to. Sonoma is full of winemakers and restaurateurs, farmers and bakers, all living off the land, helping to create a kind of DIY gourmet paradise. Overall Sonoma has kept its original low key charm. Some wineries are now charging a nominal tasting fee, but are happy to refund it if you buy a bottle of their wine.

Our second day we continued north through Santa Rosa into the Russian River Valley, considered among the top appellations for growing and bottling cool climate grapes. Sitting high on a ridge top among native redwoods, oak and madrone trees is the Gary Farrell Winery, where turning out top chardonnay and world class pinot noir is their specialty. The setting is nothing short of magical as you taste their wines high above the tree tops and listen to the wine maker explain how one wine goes through malolactic fermentation and the other ages in stainless steel barrels. From there we worked our way back down to Rochioli Vineyards and Winery, which has earned the reputation as one of Sonoma County’s finest wineries. Situated in a pastoral setting overlooking a rose garden and seductive vineyards, Rochioli Winery’s tasting room is classy yet unpretentious. The small charming space has a rotating art gallery devoted to local artists.

Heading even further north up US-101, we were happy to find that the town square of Healdsburg has emerged into a cosmopolitan hub with a mix of chic hotels, creative chefs, and stylish boutiques. We stopped on our third day to visit with Zin Master, Doug Nalle. Nalle Winery is still making incredible wines inside a makeshift bunker covered with fresh rosemary. Instead of a fancy tasting room they have a basket ball court at one end and a few folding tables that serve as their front counter. The Nalle family opens by appointment, or just when they feel like it. However, there are plenty of charming

family-owned wineries that open daily to the public. Charlie Palmer’s restaurant, Dry Creek Kitchen, is a great example of drawing from the region’s natural ingredients to create some of Sonoma’s five star dining. The restaurant also waives their corkage fee if you want to bring in your own bottle from a Sonoma winery.

On our last day, we headed west towards Dry Creek, a beautiful valley sixteen miles long and two miles wide, with just under 9,000 vineyard acres. We enjoyed visiting some old favorites like Fritz Winery, Lambert Bridge, and Ridge/Lytton Springs Winery. We ordered a picnic lunch at the Dry Creek General Store, while contemplating our next stop. We chose a wine cave tucked into a steep hillside on West Dry Creek Road, called Bella Vineyards. After tasting a flight of their zinfandels, we enjoyed a great picnic on Bella’s beautiful grounds and cooled down, from the afternoon sun, in their chic Bohemian cave. Another charming discovery was Preston of Dry Creek. Once there, it was clear this wasn’t just any winery and tasting room. Preston is a working farm with fresh vegetables and just-baked bread they sample with their homemade olive oil and goat cheese. A true example of how these Northern California farmers use their land as a source of inspiration, still paying homage to its rural Sonoma roots.

We had a great time in Sonoma. We realized how much we truly missed our wine country excursions. Sonoma has managed to flourish, producing as fine of wines as Napa, without losing their organic charm. For wine and cheese makers, chefs, farmers, and idealists of all kinds, Sonoma is a place for growth and creation, for cooking and eating, for life’s essential pleasures. For travelers it’s a place to unwind, enjoy Sonoma’s culinary wonders and experience life as it should be---simple, laidback and true to its roots.
