here are those who look to the New Year with relish and think of the clean slate that awaits them when the calendar page turns to the new year, and there are those who dread the way time marches on. Whichever perspective you have, you have to appreciate the fact that history repeats itself and that as one gets older you see trends and fashions come back into style when you least expect it. This year’s Home of the Year is a perfect example of how to combine the past with the future to make a home that is innovative and still familiar. Laura Beth Anderson took her time renovating her 1930s cottage that was built and maintained by a single family until her family purchased it and began bringing it back to life. Diane Johnson Collard took her time going through the home, the decor and the personal projects that the Andersons took on to create their eclectic home. It is an homage to using what is around you, maintaining historical context in an older home and not being afraid to modernize where it suits you. This issue also features one our most beautiful fashion sections we have ever done. Waxahachie photographer Matthew Moore worked with Assistant Editor Tyler-Marie Hartmann to style and shoot the latest trends from local boutiques in a historic space in downtown Waxahachie. We really hope these looks inspire you to update your wardrobe along with our handy list. Happy New Year and may it be a prosperous one for Ellis County.

WSA Spring Season Features Classical Performances BY MELISSA CHAPMAN

Lovers of classical music will find the Waxahachie Symphony Association Spring Season to be music to their ears with classical performances by some of North Texas’ best musicians. World-renowned Steinway Artist Stephen Nielson kicks off with a performance on February 25. Nielson will play a mix of classical and sacred solos on, of course, a Steinway Grand Piano. Performing has taken him to cities around the world such as Hong Kong, Bogotá, Berlin, London, Vienna, Brussels and Jerusalem to name a few. WSA will also present its Young Artist Awards this evening to outstanding Ellis County graduating seniors for vocal and instrumental performance. “Nielson gives a performance full of beautiful and fun music, much of which he plays in his own style,” said WSA President Sherry Dyess. “An Ambassador of Culture for the World Cultural Alliance,

Nielson loves encouraging young musicians and enjoys playing when the WSA presents their scholarship winners.” Grammy nominated Dallas Jazz Orchestra makes their debut with the WSA on April 8. Known for their jazz and big band sound, several of their members attended the University of North Texas and performed in the One O’clock Jazz Band. One of nation's premier contemporary big bands, since 1973 the Dallas Jazz Orchestra has entertained two United States presidents and accompanied numerous celebrities, including Doc Severinsen, Bob Hope, Steve Allen, and Mel Tormé. Former President George Bush remarked, “Your music was great; and, now that I have your sixth album and cassette, it doesn’t have to end.” “The Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra fills our stage with musicians and per-

formers on May 6 for our Season finale,” said Dyess. “We always have wonderful feedback about their energy on stage, and our audience really looks forward to their annual performance.” This year’s concert will feature an array of timeless classics from masters such as Brahms, Mozart and Tchaikovsky performed by the same world-class artists that play in Bass Performance Hall. “Band directors, choral directors and music teachers are encouraged to bring their students to the concerts,” said Dyess. “Students through high school are free.” Complete schedule, tickets and concert details are available at waxahachiesymphony.org. All concerts take place at the Hagee Center, 1200 Sycamore Street, at Southwestern Assemblies of God University.

LIFE & STYLE

Getting the SKINNY Advice from Tiffany Miner,

your DermOne skin care expert

Resolve to Have Beautiful, Healthy Skin in 2017 What’s on your list of resolutions for this new year? While you are aspiring to do better in all aspects of your life, don’t forget your skin. It’s the first thing the world sees! Committing to healthy skin not only boosts your confidence – it can also save your life. Add these resolutions to your list and watch your skin get more beautiful each and every day of the new year: »» SCRUB AWAY YESTERYEAR and let exfoliation give new skin the

spotlight. While the New Year’s baby’s skin will replenish itself completely every 14 days, adults take a full 30-60 days to replenish. Skin cells tend to dry out and lose their luster, so exfoliating helps to jump-start the renewal process. Consider a scrub like Bliss Pore Perfecting Facial Polish, or the Clarisonic Skin Cleansing System, and also a retinol cream. You can use something over-the-counter, such as SkinCeuticals Retinol 0.5, or, for a stronger retinol, your doctor can prescribe one at a good strength for you. Retinol helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines, discoloration, blemishes and blotchiness while helping your skin to turn over to new cells. If you are pregnant or are planning pregnancy, however, products with retinol should not be used and you should work with your physician on a skincare routine that is good for you and baby.

»» LEARN TO LOVE SERUM. Why are you hearing so much about se-

rums? Because they do great things for your skin. Face serums are like lightweight moisturizers that penetrate deeply into skin to deliver active ingredients. They are not heavy or greasy feeling, and they contain a high proportion of active ingredients. Using a serum regularly, in addition to your everyday skincare routine, can help your skin have a firmer, smoother texture and can increase its moisture levels. Some of the products you could try include Clarins Double Serum Complete Age Control Concentrate, Origins Original Skin, or Murad Rapid Age Spot and Pigment Lightening Serum.

»» MAKE SUNSCREEN PART OF YOUR DAILY BEAUTY ROUTINE. Even in the

winter? Yes! Any time that your skin sees light – even indoors – it has the potential to be damaged. Outside, loss of leaves on the trees and reflective surfaces such as snow or concrete actually increase your exposure to sunlight – more than you might think. Even if your makeup has SPF in it, that’s not enough. Look for a product that you can wear every day. Products such as those from Cotz, SkinCeuticals and EltaMD are good ones to try. And don’t stop at your face – don’t forget your ears, arms, chest, neck, feet and anywhere else that is not covered. Sunscreen helps prevent brown spots, skin discoloration and blotchiness – in addition to potentially saving your skin from cancer.

»» DRINK MORE WATER than you think you need to. Most adults say

they get enough water, but most simply do not. Being dehydrated makes your skin look tired, dull, and pronounces any wrinkles you have. So stay hydrated! In general, aim to drink eight eight-ounce cups (or a half-gallon) or more of water per day, and plan to increase that if you are exercising. If your urine is light yellow or colorless, you are on the right track. If you have any questions, consult your physician. Proper water intake is vital to so many important systems in your body – and it’s one of the best things you can do for your skin.

Make an appointment for a skin cancer check and make this an annual tradition. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the U.S., with more than 3.5 million skin cancers diagnosed in more than two million people annually. When left unchecked, it can be disfiguring or deadly. Whether you are 15 years old or 75, add a skin cancer check with a dermatologist to your annual doctors’ visits.

Have a question you would like to ask Tiffany? Send it to editor@living-magazine.com and you may be featured in a future issue! 26

Dinner for Two

There are lots of sweet ways to celebrate the one you love most, but few gestures are more romantic that cooking a meal for them. Preheat your oven to 400˚. Slice the top off the head of garlic, exposing the tops of the cloves and place in the center of a piece of aluminum foil. Drizzle a teaspoon of olive oil over the top and tightly wrap the garlic in the foil. Place in a 400˚ oven for around 45 minutes. Once cooled, squeeze the cloves out and mix into a paste with a fork. Toss a bit of flour on your counter and unroll the sheet of puff pastry on top. Use a rolling pin to even out the sides, being careful not to flatten the pastry. Use a pastry brush to cover the pastry in a thin layer of the butter. Then use half of the garlic and spread over the butter, then sprinkle half of the herbs, then half of the goat cheese, and lastly salt and pepper the pastry lightly. Start at the bottom and tightly roll the pastry into a swirl. Chill for about 10 minutes. Using a sharp knife, cut 1” rolls and place on a parchment lined cookie sheet. Bake for 18-20 minutes or until golden brown.

Heat your 12” cast iron skillet on medium high heat and add 1 tablespoon of oil and 1 tablespoon of butter. Add salt and pepper on both sides of the steaks. Once the butter is melted and bubbling, add your steaks, making sure they are not touching, and let them cook for seven minutes on each side. Try to avoid flipping them back and forth while they cook, otherwise they won’t get the caramelized crust. After flipping them, add two tablespoons of butter and the rosemary sprigs to the skillet. Using a large spoon, pour the butter over the top of the steaks continuously until they are cooked to your preferred temperature. Let them rest for a few minutes on a cutting board and either slice or serve whole.

Did I Write That Down? PLANNERS DESIGNED BY WOMEN FOR WOMEN BY MEAGAN CAMP

Are you tired of not being inspired to use the planner sitting on your desk from last January? There are many women who are designing paper goods and agendas these days. Their creativity and organization ideas give you the flexibility to find a system that truly works for the many parts of your life. We found five different planners to fit different planning personalities. JUMP-START YOUR GOAL SETTING FOR 2017! SIMPLIFIED PLANNER by Emily Ley www.emilyley.com $58 Emily Ley is a fabulous graphic designer and Florida-based mom who set out to design a minimalist, easy-to-read planner for women who need to “start fresh everyday.” The covers are bright, colorful and can be monogrammed as well. There is also a Simplified Planner app for those who need to keep it written and digital. Emily published her first book “Grace not Perfection” in October—“an inspirational book that encourages women to simplify and prioritize.” Click around Emily’s site to see her entire line of desk accessories and printables library.

“JARDIN DE PARIS” DAILY PLANNER by Rifle Paper Co. www.riflepaperco.com $34 Ann and Nathan Bond started Rifle Paper Co. in their garage in 2009 and have been leaders in the resurgence of stationery, eclectic hand-drawn designs and bright colors that are all the rage now. Their line of daily planners features bullet points instead of hours to mark your day. The hard covered metallic spiral binding book will stand up to even the deepest of purses and the creamy paper is great for stickers, markers and that random pen in your glove compartment. Pick this up, if style and portability are your top priorities.

KATE SPADE 17-MONTH AGENDA IN “FLORAL” by Kate Spade www.katespade.com $36 Planners and agendas were given an elegant upgrade when Kate Spade began designing paper products in the 90s, and the company continues to put their classy stamp on the industry. The Kate Spade planner comes with not only a space to jot down your tasks, but with wish lists and a handy double-sided pocket to store tickets and receipts. The social butterfly will keep this handy for her appointments and thank you notes.

I AM VERY BUSY PLANNER IN CARNATION by Ban.Do www.bando.com $20 If the cover hasn’t caught your eye yet, the glitter band and thin shape should. This can slip into the thinnest of tote bags or can be kept out as an eye-catching accessory. Ban.do’s mission is to have fun and it doesn’t stop with the cover. The entire line of products is designed by a group of female designers in Los Angeles. Inside you’ll find stickers, bright drawings, multi-colored tabs and full-page monthly themed art. This is for the artist who wants to have lots of space to draw and room to create. The end pages are for note taking and writing down that funny dream you had the other night. Poets and painters, this is the planner you’ve been waiting for.

Oscar-Worthy Films BY TYLER-MARIE HARTMANN

Mark your calendars for February 26th, when stars will glide down the red carpet in the most dazzling dresses, where directors will cheer from their seats as their nominated films win and where host Jimmy Kimmel will bring us all to tears, whether in laughter or emotion. The 89th Academy Awards is coming up so, to prepare our readers, here are some films that we suggest you watch to prepare yourself to judge, just like the Academy!

Director Damien Chazelle has already shocked audiences and brought home Oscars with his film “Whiplash,” so it’s no surprise that his most recent film is in the running again. Watching “La La Land” is watching a dreamy Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone romance with the backdrop of modern-day Los Angeles. But what sets this film apart are those nostalgic, richly colored musical scenes with a stunner original soundtrack and a contemplative story. Besides the possibilities of winning Oscars for Best Actress, Best Score and Best Director, this film is in the running for Best Picture.

Natalie Portman is nothing but striking in Pablo Larraín’s film portrayal of Jacquelyn Kennedy during the most tumultuous time of her life. While many have been predicting that this will be the starlet’s second time to win an Oscar, this film has been named as a possible winner in other categories, such as Production Design and Best Picture. A great way to learn about history, channel your inner Jackie and see the performances that are blowing audiences away. FUN FACT: The last time Natalie Portman and producer/director Darren Aronofsky collaborated was on set of the memorable Academy award-winning film “Black Swan.” A dynamic pair.

Take a trip to the world of 1979, where halter-tops were in and Jimmy Carter was almost out. The Oscar talk for this film begins with Annette Bening’s Best Actress worthy character, a middle-aged bohemian mother raising her son as a divorceé in Southern California. Rather than focusing on a classic plot line, this film focuses on the moments between its characters, allowing Bening to experiment and shine in her role. After four previous Oscar nominations, this might be the winning performance for Bening! A truly nostalgic look into the past, full of indie savvy dialogue, sweet moments and lessons on learning from other generations.

A top contender for Best Picture and Best Director, “Moonlight” focuses on the question of identity during three stages in Chiron’s life. Chiron, a young man who grows up in lower class Miami, deals with a drug-abused world, sexual prejudices and racism. Through these defining moments of his growing as a child, as a teen and as a young adult, Chiron grasps onto the realization of who he is, as a gay and black young man. If you’re looking for a beautiful, moving film, that will capture you in your seat and leave you with a defining question, then watch “Moonlight.”

HONORABLE MENTION

Doctor Strange for the fantastical comic book story While Marvel movies are not know for scoring big at the Oscars, Doctor Strange has been in the talk for a possible Visual Effects nomination and win. Whether or not it wins, this film is a definite watch for all the comic book loving, super hero watching and action enjoying audiences. So, get together with your friends to watch one of Marvel’s most famous stories, starring our favorite Benedict Cumberbatch. Prepare for astounding visual effects and decide whether you think this film should take home an Oscar.

How Social Media Will Expand Your Business BY TYLER-MARIE HARTMANN After such great changes in 2016 for the social media world, 2017 will most indefinitely heighten the social media game for businesses once again. If you want to understand social media advertising more or how the social media worlds work, take a look at this breakdown of the 4 major social media platforms:

FACEBOOK

INSTAGRAM

TWITTER

PINTEREST

THE GOAL: If you would like to create an online presence for your business, then start with Facebook. Begin to brand your online image in your profile and header pictures and your posts. Hiring a social media manager to specifically design and brand your image will draw attention to your business, allowing your company to stand out. When posting content, create posts that people would want to interact with. If you are promoting your restaurant, write a post on the top 5 healthiest New Year’s resolution plates that could be helpful to followers and that would get your name out at the same time. Be the page you want to read.

THE GOAL: The main purpose of your company’s Instagram is to tell a visual story. Take a look at the Instagrams of companies like Rifle Paper Co., Anthropologie and Ladurée Macarons. Each of these companies has branded images, hashtags and a look specific to what they want to sell. A great idea would be to hire a photographer for fun, pretty product shots that you can post on Instagram (no more than once a day), to show your followers that there is a standard of high quality, and to encourage followers to take a further look at your products. Followers also love behind-thescenes pictures, so maybe post a few of what it is like behind-the-scenes of your company.

THE GOAL: Because Twitter is a tighter and smaller package than the previous social media platforms, every piece is vital. This means that when someone goes to your page, they will see your profile picture, header picture, about description and pinned post (at the top of your statuses), and that’s when they will decide whether to follow you or not. So, the branding on your Twitter profile page is even more important. For a business, the Twitter power lies in the wording and photo. If you were promoting a sale, a great way to use Twitter would be to post a short, concise statement about the sale, then a photo of the item that’s up for grabs.

THE GOAL: The connecting power on Pinterest is of usability and creativity. More of the popular pins that get passed around either show great tips or ideas, or are beautiful displays of creativity. Now, it makes sense when people talk about the perfect Pinterest wedding, party or home. So many companies will actually create these blog type posts for the benefit of their followers, and to spread their products. Another option on Pinterest is the direct buying of products. If you have high quality photos, a Pinterest user might want to buy the item from just seeing it posted on Pinterest. On this social medium, the goals are to create quality pins and then to spread the word through the site.

If you want more bang for your business marketing, consider heightening the social media portion. In the 21st century, social media platforms are affective forms of marketing. So, take a look at these options and consider making some changes for the New Year!

THE FIREMAN’S WIFE

New Year, New You BY CHRISTINA DRISKELL

“What you put in your mouth is so important!” This is a quote I read the other day and it really stuck with me because there is so much truth in that simple sentence. You have full control over what you choose to eat. Lately, I’ve been doing a lot of research and watching lots of documentaries concerning food. Let me just tell you, it’s not pretty. While the burgers, fries, chicken fried steaks, chips, cookies, etc. might taste yummy, they’re actually toxic to our bodies, especially when eaten in excess. Not to mention, the chemicals hidden inside the food are literally tricking our brains and causing us to crave more bad food. It’s a vicious cycle, but I have good news! It’s a cycle that you CAN BREAK! When I left the hospital after having our beautiful, perfect baby boy in January, I was 45 pounds over my pre-baby weight. It was depressing. I had already begun my research into clean eating and the effects that food has on our bodies and I knew it was time for a change, not just for myself, but for my new family. I wanted my husband and son to have good, real foods to eat that nourished and healed their bodies, not harmed them. So we began a transformation in my household. I grocery shopped better, I cooked healthier, and we started on the best supplements that we could get our hands on through AdvoCare. We were instantly feeling better, had more energy, and we were losing weight! Fast forward to now, all my baby weight is long gone and my husband has shed some pounds as well. While all of that is great, the most amazing thing is how it’s affected our health. We haven’t visited a doctor or got a prescription filled in over a year. How freeing is that? Not to mention, saves us money!

SAUSAGE STUFFED ACORN SQUASH

1 Acorn Squash About 1 T Olive Oil Salt & Pepper, to taste 1 lb. Turkey Sausage ½ Onion, diced 1 Apple, chopped 1 stick of Celery, chopped 2 cloves of Garlic, minced ½ t Dried Sage ½ t Dried Thyme 1 T Arrowroot Powder 1 Egg, beaten Parsley (for topping)

1. Preheat oven to 400˚. Prepare acorn squash by carefully cutting in half lengthwise. Scoop out the guts like a pumpkin and throw away. 2. Place on a baking sheet, flesh side up. Drizzle with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Cook in the oven for 40 minutes. 3. While the acorn squash is cooking, prepare the stuffing. Cook the sausage in a skillet along with the onion, apple, celery, and garlic. 4. When the sausage is done, add in the herbs and arrowroot powder. Stir to combine and turn off heat. 5. Allow to slightly cool, then add the beaten egg. You don’t want the stuffing to be so hot that it cooks the egg. Stir to coat the sausage stuffing with the beaten egg. 6. Remove the acorn squash from the oven and stuff each half with the sausage mixture. It will be overflowing with goodness! 7. Place back in the oven and cook for an additional 20 minutes. Remove, top with some fresh parsley, and dig in!

Brooks LOVES broccoli. I often make a simple side of broccoli to go with this dish and puree a small amount for our little one.

1. Preheat oven to 375˚. 2. Place broccoli florets, olive oil, garlic powder, and salt and pepper into a large Ziploc bag. Seal and shake the bag until the broccoli is coated with the oil and seasonings. 3. Place broccoli on a greased baking sheet in a single layer. Cook in 375˚ oven for about 20 minutes. 4. To make into baby food, place a few florets into a food processor. Add a little bit of water and blend. Add more water until you reach the consistency and thickness your baby can handle.

Traveling Throughout

THE UNITED KINGDOM BY TYLER-MARIE HARTMANN

I could not fully describe how it all came together, but on October 24th, my best friend Kyla Burke, her sister Kori and I were headed to the United Kingdom to pleasure travel through England, Scotland and Northern Ireland. We were going to be spending our fall with coats, crunchy leaves, cups of tea, Big Ben and more.

LONDON, ENGLAND was the most fast paced city on the trip with the all-day tourist activities and a bouncing nightlife! The girls and I chose to do a few things differently in London to make it stand out from the usual itinerary. One of our favorites was the tearoom SKETCH, located right near Piccadilly Circus. A very girly spot that make you feel like you’re sipping tea and eating scones in a room made of pink bubble gum. Reservations are advisable (and worth it!), so you do not have to stress about there not being any room. Of the whole U.K. trip, this tearoom had the best scones and tea—absolutely heavenly! Some other experiences that made London worthwhile was seeing the magnificent Buckingham Palace, breathing in history at Westminster Abbey, feeding the swans at Kensington Gardens, figuring out how to take the famous photo on Abbey Road, strolling through all the pretty, pastel buildings in Notting Hill and enjoying the dazzling nightlife in Soho. Everyone in LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND will tell you that there’s no better place than Liverpool. Only a few hour bus ride from London, Liverpool is not a usual tourist spot, but for anyone who has a fascination with the Fab Four, it is a must. Only spending a full day in Liverpool, we got

40

LIVING-MAGAZINE.COM // JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2017

everything we wanted done. This included walking through the famous Beatles story museum, taking the Magical Mystery Bus ride tour (seeing all the famous Beatles spots within Liverpool) and talking to all the local Liverpool natives. Being a serious Beatles fan, everything was a dream—from seeing Paul McCartney, George Harrison and John Lennon’s home to seeing a Beatles cover band play live at the legendary CAVERN CLUB. There are even Yellow Submarine onesies to take home to your nephews and nieces. Beatles who? If this is you, then Liverpool is still such a perfect English city, full of orange and red foliage, delicious pubs and a lively nightlife. A great city if you want to be an English local for a day, especially during the fall. Flying from John Lennon airport into EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND was cheap, easy and quick, especially when Kyla’s cousin met us there. Edinburgh (pronounced Ed-in-bruh) was hands-down the favorite city on the trip. Almost as if it was magically pieced together, this city is full of castle-like buildings, stained glass windows, local pleasures, and the sound of someone’s bagpipes always floating to your ears. It is no surprise that it is known for being J.K. Rowling’s home, and where she drafted the Harry Potter se-

ries, inside of the ELEPHANT HOUSE café. Ironically, we arrived in Edinburgh on Halloween day, so that meant dressing up as a witch, wearing Gryffindor socks and having a cup of coffee at the Elephant House café in honor of our favorite wizard. The next few days in Edinburgh were spent, not as a tourist crossing items off a list, but as a local wanderer, finding comfort in surrounding green land, stone buildings, quaint shops and shadowy pubs. One of the prettiest sites was at the Edinburgh castle, which sits atop the city. You can get a hot coffee at the red cart out front and make your way through Scottish history. Being in Edinburgh was a nomadic experience that brought joy in simply dancing from street to shop. The most

magical city to visit—maybe you will see Hermione, Harry and Ron wandering around a street corner too. Originally, our trip was going straight to Dublin, but when we found out that the “Game of Thrones” tour was located in BELFAST, IRELAND, so we had to stop. For all GoT fans, seeing the real life Winterfell and other castle locations is a treat, especially when you are given a Jon Snow cape and fake sword to complete the experience. We were able to bike around this area, which was full of the quintessential Northern Irish scenery. One of the most memorable parts of the whole U.K. trip was biking through Ireland in the season of fall. Land covered with green moss, auburn leave mixtures covering the ground and water sur-

rounding the area. Yes, we would stop and see a famous castle from the show’s film shoots, but we loved to just pause and breathe in that brisk Irish air. For any trip to Northern Ireland, put seeing the countryside at the top of your list. All together, the trip felt like we jumped into the pool of British culture, with pounds in our pockets and fake accents on our lips. We met all different kinds of people, hearing their perspectives, and saw so many ancient and picturesque places that we will carry in our memories forever. Traveling to a new place truly creates a time machine to the past, but also to the future. You see more of the person you want to be and notice the intricate details that only you remember. Where will you travel in 2017? And who will you become because of it?

POLITICS BY JOHN WRAY, STATE REPRESENTATIVE, DISTRICT 10

PRIORITIES AND PROBLEM SOLVING: THE 85TH LEGISLATIVE SESSION After an eventful and historic 2016, the political landscape has settled and the legislature is eager to work on the priorities and problems that face Texas. The 85th legislative session begins on January 10th and I will have the tremendous honor to represent District 10 again in the State House. Serving in this capacity demands responsibility and accountability, and I remain committed to fighting for our values and advocating for our district. Keeping Texas the biggest and brightest star in the nation requires constant work, unwavering commitment to our principles and steadfast dedication to the constituents we are entrusted to represent.

levels, implementing innovative solutions and making important investments in our children and their futures.

During the interim I had the opportunity to continue my work on legislative issues, meet with government agencies and commissions, spend time listening to the folks at home about what matters most to them and how I can help enable the growth and prosperity of our communities. Time and time again I heard about these major topics: Infrastructure, Education, Taxes and Public Safety.

Our state deeply values the sacrifice and contributions made by all law enforcement and first responders and will honor and protect them in any way possible, as they do for us on a daily basis. Governor Abbott has called for legislative action in the form of the Police Protection Act, which would extend hate crime protection to law enforcement officers and increase criminal penalties for those who perpetrate crimes against police.

From a strictly local perspective, the rapid growth of our area mirrors closely the growth of our state. Transportation infrastructure and funding for those projects continue to be near the top of the list for our cities and counties and for the residents who travel those roads. Along with transportation, both public and higher education are key components in supporting increased population growth and tied closely to healthy economic development. Texas has the opportunity to improve our education at the K-12 and post-secondary

42

LIVING-MAGAZINE.COM // JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2017

During my tenure on the Ways and Means committee, I helped to continue Texas’ commitment to a low tax environment for both individuals and businesses. Our success in increasing the homestead exemption and lowering the franchise tax rate served as examples that the House is committed to producing fiscally conservative results. We will continue to look for ways to help Texans keep more of their dollars and to create a climate that encourages new business and job growth.

In addition to these issues, a few items have garnered attention from every corner of the state - the biennial budget, the reform of Child Protective Services and the assertion of states rights have topped the Governor’s list, as well as the lists of the Lt. Governor and Speaker. The Comptroller’s Office has notified lawmakers that this session’s budget will be significantly tighter than last biennium. Following a slowdown in economic growth, the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and

Speaker sent a joint letter in July to all state agencies requesting a 4% reduction to all Appropriation Requests. Although in line with our commitment to fiscal restraint in times of hardship, our economy remains relatively strong, surpassing Russia and Canada to become the 10th largest economy in the world. Child Protective Services has come under strong scrutiny after reports of abuse, neglect, and murder were covered extensively in the media. The legislature will reform CPS this session, addressing its shortcomings, and protecting some the most vulnerable among us. Legislation has been pre-filed and emergency funds have been approved to hire additional case workers and to increase pay for current case workers. Lastly, the Governor called for support of Article V Convention of the States legislation. These efforts focus primarily on imposing fiscal restraints on the federal government, limiting the power and jurisdiction of the federal government, and supporting term limits for federal officials. I supported these efforts previously and will continue to support efforts to reign in the federal government should they not take proactive measures. I look forward to the months ahead and to working on your behalf in the Texas House. With offices in Waxahachie and in Austin, me and my staff stand ready to serve you and I hope to hear from you if I can ever be of service. God Bless You and God Bless Texas!

POLITICS BY CAROL BUSH, ELLIS COUNTY JUDGE

HAPPY NEW YEAR ELLIS COUNTY There’s something special about January. After the revelry of the holidays has concluded, a sentimental goodbye wave is given to the ending year and a hopeful toast ushers in the new. January arrives, and with it, permission to hit the reset button. We make resolutions, set goals and commit to achieving them. Exercise more, spend less, eat healthier…and the list goes on. While it would seem more natural to hibernate in the status quo through the winter months, the new calendar year commands our attention and demands action and commitment to improvement. It is a Happy New Year for Ellis County. I am proud to report that we have entered 2017 energized by the County’s strong financial position. The 2017 Budget is balanced and the County tax rate of .413 per $100 valuation has remained the same for six consecutive years. Moody’s and Fitch recently confirmed our AA Bond rating, commenting favorably on our low tax rate and our conservative fiscal and management practices. Because of our solid economic standing, the County had the opportunity to refund the eligible portion ($39,195,000) of the outstanding Series 2007 General obligation Bonds for significant debt service savings. In late October 2016, the Commissioners Court voted to approve the issuance of General Obligation Refunding Bonds, Series 2016; and we recently received word that the Attorney General

44

LIVING-MAGAZINE.COM // JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2017

reviewed and approved the County bond issuance. Why is that important? It’s important because our County’s credit worthiness allowed us to take advantage of lower interest rates and save us taxpayers approximately $7 million dollars. With the swearing-in of returning and newly-elected officials, the clock has started ticking on the work that will be done in the year ahead. A new administration and a new legislative session will bring change that trickles down to the local level. As County Judge, I am pleased to continue working with Congressman Joe Barton, Senator Brian Birdwell, and Representative John Wray, because I know that we can expect a continuity of advocacy for this community at the federal and state levels. As in the past, I anticipate open lines of communication as we deal with topics of concern such as unfunded mandates and high-speed rail. Also this month, the Commissioners Court welcomed its newest member, Randy Stinson, County Commissioner for Precinct 1. We look forward to his participation and contributions as we tackle challenges and opportunities that come from the growth the County is experiencing. I like to joke that when I first moved here 28 years ago, I could have taken a nap

on Hwy. 287 without too much concern. That is definitely no longer the case. Our population has increased to approximately 165k and will continue upward. There are currently over 14k permits issued for new rooftops across the County. Everywhere you turn, there is a building project. With growth comes a heavier demand on County services. In response, the Budget I proposed for FY 2016-2017 was heavily committed to Law Enforcement and to the health, safety and security of this community. It provided for additional Sheriff’s Dispatch personnel for emergency response, support for DPS Highway Patrol, the addition of a Code Enforcement officer to assist the Department of Development and additional staffing for the County and District Attorney’s Office. The months ahead will be busy. I will be championing the efforts of our cities, advocating for transportation dollars to assist with County road projects, and working with a long range planning committee to discuss the County’s future. And as a Commissioners Court, we will turn our attention to facilities and communications enhancements, building repairs, and long term road improvements. It is definitely an exciting time for Ellis County. I feel good about January’s call to action and the County’s response. Now, I just need to figure out how to exercise more.

POLITICS BY PATRICK WILSON, ELLIS COUNTY & DISTRICT ATTORNEY

EVOLUTION IN ELLIS COUNTY 2017 marks the beginning of my second full term as the elected District Attorney of Ellis County. It has been my honor and privilege to serve in that role since 2011. My, how time flies! This year is a milestone of change and growth for the office. As 2016 came to an end, Sandy Fisher retired as the office manager of the DA’s Office. Sandy joined the office in December 1994. As Sandy tells the story, she was hired by my predecessor, Joe Grubbs, just to balance some books. For the next 22 years, her role grew significantly. Consider that in 1990 the official population of Ellis County was only 85,167. Today our population is estimated to be more than 168,000. As Ellis County has grown, so too have the demands on my office, which now has 45 employees. There are not enough words to describe how important Sandy was to my office. From balancing books and supervising staff to monitoring state audit requirements and stockpiling Band-Aids and aspirin, Sandy did it all. When I took office in 2011, I had a lot to learn about the operation of the office. In that learning process, Sandy was a great friend and teacher. I lovingly and frequently called her the center pole of our circus tent. As she enjoys her retirement, we are going to

46

LIVING-MAGAZINE.COM // JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2017

miss her far more than she will miss us! I’m happy to announce that Sandy’s successor is Kelli Wallace. Kelli previously worked in the office in a support position. She has been working with Sandy for a few months to ease the transition. I’m sure it will be great. I just hope Sandy left her little toolbox behind, otherwise, Kelli might get confused when someone asks for a hammer. It’s easy to forget that Ellis County is a part of a major metropolitan area. The U.S. Census Bureau calls it the DallasFort Worth-Arlington Metropolitan Statistical Area, with a population of more than 7 million. This area is one of the fastest growing regions in the country. With that in mind, the second milestone for my office in 2017 is the growth and evolution of the felony division. As a result of a new attorney position and a new support staff position being added within the fiscal year that began in October 2016, we are finally able to begin the process of restructuring our felony division in a manner consistent with that of larger metropolitan offices. It’s a long-overdue evolution. Ellis County has three district courts. Felony criminal cases are heard in two of those courts, the 40th and the

443rd District Courts. The 443rd was added a couple of years ago, but no additional staff was provided for my office until now. In that time, the staff of my felony division had to juggle the demands of both courts, sometimes needing to be in two places at the same time. It was a very inefficient, but necessary way to do business. Going forward, we will have dedicated teams of three prosecutors, two support staff, and an investigator assigned to each of the two courts. As part of this evolution, we are reinventing our entire felony case processing system. The early returns have been positive. The new system is already creating much-needed efficiencies for our overburdened criminal justice system. As the new process becomes fully integrated in the early part of 2017, we expect all involved parties to see improvements, from the police and courts, to the defense attorneys and the victims of crime. My office is dedicated to keeping Ellis County a safe place to live, work, and raise a family. I am confident that the change and growth we experience this year will be positives for our entire community. Please have a safe and happy 2017!

Home of the Year

For many years Living Magazine has featured a home of the year. In the past, our chosen home has been relatively new construction, but this year we have made a change. We have found a historic home that warrants our attention and your enjoyment.

Sam and Laura Beth Anderson

2017

Sam and Laura Beth Anderson have restored several homes in Waxahachie. Laura Beth has a keen eye for design and magical ideas to enhance these old ladies. She has lovingly brought them back to, what I would deem, more than their original beauty.

The most recent home restored by the couple is a lovely Tudor style cottage typical of homes built in Waxahachie in the 1930’s. Steep gables and rigid rooflines enhance the exterior of this style home. The interior features natural hardwood floors, arched doorways and built-in corner cabinets. All are indicative of homes built during this era. From the outside you would think this home is much like many others in town. However, as soon as you enter through the front door you realize that this home is one of a kind. The eclectic style of modern rustic and antiques fills every room to perfection.

LIVING-MAGAZINE.COM // JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2017

49

FEATURE Laura Beth installed the herringbone ceiling in the dining room made from recycled wood. It is rustic and rich, while the natural oak hardwood floors and antique furniture are more fitting to the period. The ceiling adds a dimension of texture and warmth that transforms the room. The original walls in the home are solid horizontal plank wood, Typically, these walls were covered in cheesecloth and wallpaper. In many areas the wallpaper was removed and the wood exposed as a design feature. The breakfast room (center, page 49) is one of those areas. Painted with black lacquer, this plank wall is striking against the white woodwork and stained ceiling. Built in corner hutches stand out against the crisp black walls. The updated kitchen (page 51) is a mix of rustic, industrial and period with its farm house sinks and enormous island with a natural wood top. The floor is reclaimed pine that is stained to match the original oak perfectly. One wall of the kitchen is left in the original horizontal plank, while the others are a combination of texture and misty green glass subway tile. The sharp contrast of the plank and the glass tiles is stunning. The 48-inch gas range backs up to a backsplash wall of glass tile and is surrounded by open shelves holding cookware and dishes. The oversized island fills the center of the room with an inviting flare. A focal point for the island is the magnificent industrial light made by Laura Beth. The massive hallway (right, page 49) that leads to the bedrooms is enhanced by wood ceiling beams and arched door openings that line the walls. The children’s bath is a delight. The metal sinks with built in backsplashes are free hanging on fabulous round blue glass tiles walls. The large mirrored medicine cabinets over each sink offer lots of storage. The claw foot tub sits against a wall of reclaimed wood and accent molding purchased from the museum. The first bedroom belongs to one of the Anderson’s two sons. This room is filled with baseball memorabilia. The red, navy, gray and white color scheme is a perfect backdrop for the collection. An old red metal utility table and a metal typing table add to the charm. The colors in the second bedroom are much the same, but the memorabilia, which includes baseball, also includes old tools and cars. The night stand in this room is, also, a metal typing table bought from the school district. The master bedroom, left, is vibrant with bright red accents on natural wood floors, ceiling beams and furniture. This combination creates an inviting atmosphere for relaxing with a good book and cup of hot tea. In contrast to the bedroom, the master bath (page 52) is a big surprise. The more modern, sleek look of gray marble walls and countertops with a white mosaic tile floor is bright and crisp. The bright white cabinets and trim sparkle against the cool gray walls. The room is spacious and glows with charm.

“I designed and created the light in the kitchen with modern and antique elements, so it would have an eclectic feel. The board on the bottom is a true dimensional 2x4 from the 1800’s, with amazing saw mill marks, that I found in a friend’s burn pile. I attached it to the gas pipe extending from the ceiling which gives the cloth cords something to wrap around. I used various shapes and sizes of Edison bulbs to create added interest.”

“The master bathroom is definitely sleek and modern, but with a closer look, the antique features tied into the design can be seen. The entire back wall makes a statement with the Carrara marble tiles that were laid in a herringbone pattern. It also became a great backdrop for the antique tub and antique leaded glass window.

The wood staircase leads to an attic space that has been transformed into a fun living area. This eclectic space is a combination of contemporary, rustic and industrial styles. The window wall is a collection of wood signs, planks, architectural trim scraps and metal that forms a collage of texture and color. An upstairs bath vanity is made from an old metal kitchen cabinet. The sink is a porcelain kitchen sink, complete with a drain board. Features like this make this home a fun place to visit. The Andersons have added their own personal flare to an already amazing little house, which, by the way, is no longer a little house. The additions through the years have collectively turned this house into a 3,500 square foot home. Laura Beth’s creativity shines in every room of this home. It is warm, inviting, well lived in and full of love. Located on one of our historic streets, this home has it all. That is why we felt it worthy of being our home of the year. It represents our past, our present and our small town culture. What more could we ask? I hope you enjoy strolling through the rooms of this wonderful home as much as we did.

Interior Innovation BY COURTNEY WARREN

Does all this talk of house renovation, updates and restoration make you want to raise your hammer and break through your existing wall like the Kool-Aid man? Don’t break that wall just yet! There are some easy, low-level changes you can make to your existing home without making a mess and breaking the bank.

PHOTOS BY MARIE Q

CUSTOM WOODWORK DETAILS When we installed our kitchen cabinets, Pinterest had my heart ablaze. I think I actually showed our contractor a photo of Tom Brady’s kitchen, and said, “I want this.” Appropriately, he laughed like it was a joke. I laughed too, but inwardly I cried. Sure, I am not an NFL quarterback married to a supermodel, but I want beautiful cabinetry too! I settled for beautiful cabinets with a plain island front, then later, hired a woodworker to add details. My island started simple, but now has amazing woodworking that cost me a small percentage than if I had installed it from the beginning. I had to be patient and do things in steps to make it a reality for my timeline and budget.

DOOR DO-OVER

Doors are such an easy way to make a big WOW statement! With my pantry door, I wanted to use the beautiful rounded screen door off the front porch and include it in the angles of the home. Such a neat door was wasted out there, in my opinion! We had the pantry built around this door, but if you already live in your home, that is not always possible. It might be that you can add an old door to your existing door frame with a little work and a saw. Or buy a brand new door to fit, and make it look unique with paint, glass, distressing or other details. Pinterest is full of tutorials for someone with a paintbrush, tape measure and weekend afternoon free! Is that a project you could take on?

Remember, don’t despair if seeing other great houses leaves you wanting more. You can love your home- just spend a little time and creativity and start with small changes that improve your satisfaction. And remember, the home is so much more than what we can see, the most important thing in our homes is the people we love! Don’t you agree?

PLANTING

»» Plant shade trees, shrubs and woody ornamentals from nursery containers. Check out the Texas SmartScape™ program at www.txsmartscape.com to help you create an environmentally friendly landscape. »» Transplant small trees and shrubs while they are dormant. Water the plant well before digging. »» Plant cold-tolerant herbs such as chives, cilantro, garlic and parsley. Onions from transplants can be planted late month. »» Seed for warm-weather annuals can be planted in flats in a temperaturecontrolled environment. Tomatoes and peppers, especially those hard to find varieties in the spring, can be started from seed mid-month. All require bright light and warm temperatures (60˚70˚F). Use grow lights for best results. »» Tulip and hyacinth bulbs which have been chilled for 8 weeks should be planted immediately. »» Plant blackberries, fruit and nut trees. Cultivar or variety selection is critical. Contact the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service - Ellis County at 972-825-5175 or visit http://aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/ fruit-nut for recommended varieties.

FERTILIZING AND PRUNING

»» Prune trees, including live oaks and red oaks, to remove dead, broken and unwanted branches, or to raise the canopy to allow more light underneath. »» Keep a spray can of pruning paint handy to immediately paint any wound on your oak trees. To help prevent oak wilt, we no longer say there are windows of safety because of cold weather or hot weather. Paint every wound all year long. »» Water newly planted trees and shrubs as needed; and apply a liquid root stimulator monthly. »» Peach and plum trees should be pruned to stimulate lateral branches and keep their “bowl” shape. Thin out branches to open the center to allow more sunlight resulting in fruit production over the entire tree. »» Apply blood meal or a slow-release fertilizer to pansies and other coolseason annuals. »» Maintain free-form crape myrtles by removing “root sprouts” growing from the base – but please, never cut the tops out of crape myrtles. It produces unsightly knots and it delays blooming. However, removing spent seed pods is okay.

GARDEN WATCH

»» Remove by hand, broadleaf weeds such as clover, dandelions, henbit and chickweed in lawns and beds. If necessary, spot spray turf with a broadleaf herbicide when temperatures are above 70˚. Be careful when using herbicides in flower beds to prevent the drift from harming desirable plants. »» Now is the time to have the soil tested in your lawn, vegetable and flower gardens. Contact the local AgriLife Extension office at 972-825-5175 for a soil sample test kit and mailing instructions. For additional information, go to http://soiltesting.tamu.edu.

PLANTING

»» Cool-season vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, kale and potatoes should be planted midmonth or about 4 weeks prior to the average last freeze date (March 15 in Ellis County). Beets, carrots, lettuce, radishes, spinach, Swiss chard and “greens” (collard, mustard and turnip) should be planted 2 to 4 weeks prior to the average last freeze. »» Plant asparagus crowns in 10-12 inches of soil. When buying crowns, look for 2-year old root systems with healthy roots. »» Container and bare-root roses can be planted now. When planting from a container, use a two-gallon or larger size. Consider Texas A&M EarthKind® varieties which are easy to maintain and need less water, fertilizer and pesticides. For more information on these special roses, go to http://aggiehorticulture.tamu.edu/earthkindroses. »» When buying plants, biggest is not always best, especially with bare-root plants. Small to medium sizes establish faster. »» Dig and divide warm-season perennials (cannas, coneflowers, perennial salvia, mums) before they break dormancy.

FERTILIZING AND PRUNING

»» Prune bush roses around Valentine’s Day. Prune old, dead and weak canes back to the ground. Leave 4 to 8 vigorous canes, removing one-half of their growth above an outward-facing bud. Wait to prune climbing or leaning roses until after they bloom. Prune errant canes at any time to maintain desired shape. »» Herbaceous perennials and ornamental grasses may be cut back now. Prune autumn sage (Salvia gregii) by 50%. Mexican feather grass does not require pruning. »» Dig and divide large clumps of warmseason ornamental grasses especially if the center of the plant has died. »» Cut or mow liriope before new growth emerges. Asian jasmine may be trimmed back to 4 or 5 inches.

LITTLE GEM MAGNOLIA The Little Gem Magnolia is an evergreen tree reaching a height of 15-20 feet and a width of 8-10 feet. The Little Gem Magnolia will tolerate full to partial sun and low water needs. Its ornate, large flowers are white and creamy with a sweet fragrance. The dark, glossy, green leaves provide a nice contrast to the beautiful flowers that bloom for several months.

GARDEN WATCH

»» Begin controlling insects and diseases on fruit and nut trees. Spraying is essential for a successful harvest. Contact the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service – Ellis County for a copy of the “Homeowners Fruit and Nut Spray Schedule”. »» Look for aphids and caterpillars on vegetables, and control with insecticidal soap and Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis), respectively. »» Check for scale insects adhering to the trunk, branches and leaves of hollies, euonymus, shade trees, pecans, fruit trees and other woody plants. Apply horticultural oil (or “dormant” oil) to control these and other over-wintering insects. »» Inspect the lawn sprinkler system to ensure proper operation. Replace worn or broken sprinkler heads. Adjust spray patterns to reduce runoff.

SEASONAL AFFECTIVE DISORDER BY DR. KATHERINE DONALDSON

Dear Dr. Donaldson, Every winter I get depressed and it lasts until spring. I can’t wait for spring to come. The rest of the year I am fine.

STAFF PICKS

It sounds as if you may be suffering with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Many people who may not be depressed at other times of the year become depressed during winter with the lack of sunlight and the cold weather. Light therapy, psychotherapy and medication are effective treatments for SAD. Phototherapy, or light therapy, involves sitting by a light therapy box that provides you with bright light. The light is reported to affect your brain chemicals and improve mood. It helps to replace the sun you are missing during the short winter days. It can start working as quickly as a few days but for some people can take up to two weeks. Many people have

found light therapy helpful in improving SAD symptoms. Your doctor can help you choose the light box that is best for you. Anti-depressant medications are also helpful in decreasing symptoms of SAD. Some people with SAD take anti-depressants as a preventative for episodes of SAD. These can be prescribed by your primary care physician or a psychiatrist. As with light therapy, if you wait to take medication after the depression sets in, it can take a couple of weeks (or even longer) before you feel relief. Psychotherapy with a psychologist or other therapist can address behaviors and thoughts that increase depressive symp-

Menopause and Hormone Therapy: TO TAKE OR NOT TO TAKE? BY BAYLOR SCOTT & WHITE MEDICAL CENTER - WAXAHACHIE

After more than a decade of sometimes conflicting research, for many middle-aged women, that is still the question. Back when your mother went through menopause, the onset of hot flashes, night sweats and mood swings meant it was time for one thing: hormone therapy (formerly known as hormone replacement therapy or HRT). Not only was hormone therapy supposed to help lessen the symptoms of menopause, but it was also thought to help lessen the risk of serious health hazards such as heart disease, stroke and even dementia. For decades, it was considered the gold standard for women of every age and health status going through menopause. That all changed after the turn of the millennium. “In the early 2000s, an extensive research study was published that raised serious questions about whether or not hormone therapy was the right course of action for every woman going through menopause,” explains Nicole Davis, MD, an OB/GYN on the medical staff at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Waxahachie. The results of the Women’s Health Initiative study sent shockwaves through the medical community, as it found that one common type of hormone therapy actually increased the risk of serious medical conditions. Due to the findings, many women stopped hormone therapy and looked for alternatives, only to have the uncomfortable symptoms associated with this chapter of their life come rushing back.

FINDING A HAPPY MEDIUM

“Since some of the initial concerns about hormone therapy came to light, more studies and analysis have shown that it is still an effective, safe option for many women to control symptoms associated with menopause,” says Dr. Davis. “But there are women with certain risk factors or characteristics who should probably avoid it.”

mitigating the risk of serious complications. There are many more options available, so in that way, today’s hormone therapy is not your mother’s hormone therapy.

Women who should probably steer clear of hormone therapy include those who have or have had: »» Breast, ovarian or endometrial cancer »» Blood clots in the lungs or legs »» Stroke »» Liver disease Additionally, women who are going through menopause, but are not experiencing significant symptoms hampering their quality of life, probably don’t need hormone therapy. The benefits of hormone therapy still outweigh the risks for many – if not most – menopausal women. In fact, the North American Menopause Society, the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, and the Endocrine Society all support hormone therapy to address menopause symptoms. “We typically don’t promote hormone therapy as a way to prevent serious diseases like heart disease or memory problems anymore,” says Dr. Davis.

RISK AND REWARD A number of clinical studies over the decades have shown that hormone therapy can help relieve menopause-related symptoms, including: »» hot flashes »» vaginal dryness »» night sweats »» bone loss Certain hormone therapy regimens have been associated with an increased risk of: »» breast cancer »» stroke »» blood clots »» heart attack To minimize risks and side effects, most physicians recommend the lowest dose of hormones over the shortest time possible to control menopause symptoms.

It’s important to realize that hormone therapy – the type and amount – has a lot to do with

LA FIN

The Savvy Traveler I have always admired those free-spirited travelers who backpack through Europe after college or who raft down the Rio Grande and pitch a tent for the night, but I am not one of them. I don’t have to necessarily sleep in five-star hotels, but a hostel in a foreign land with one bathroom per floor is not my idea of fun. Although I have stayed in a thatched-roof hut in the rainforest of Belize and sailed a boat for days in the British Virgin Islands with no hot water, in most cases I want my accommodations to be as nice, if not better, than my home. After all, a vacation is a treat and should be a fun and comfortable experience. I am the self-appointed travel agent when it comes to finding the perfect place to stay for friends and family. I am actually rather obsessed with it once we have nailed down our destination. My favorite choice of accommodation, if we are going to stay in one location for several days, is to rent a private villa or vacation home. I think it’s the only way to go when traveling with friends or family members. I have found designerdecorated homes all over the world with fabulous furnishings, fully stocked kitchens, swimming pool, high thread count sheets and big fluffy towels for half of what a nice hotel costs. I love waking up in a house with multiple rooms and having the option to brew our own coffee and cook some of our own meals. The way I go about finding the perfect place to stay is to start a GOOGLE search on the location we are traveling to, along with the words “VACATION HOMES.” I scroll through and look at all of my choices and often find links to other sites along the way. I study every picture of every room before I decide on my top three. I then check TRIPADVISOR.COM for any reviews on the property and search to see if the owners of the home have their own website. If you can book directly with

the homeowner it is usually cheaper, since they don’t have to pay a commission to the booking site. Of course, there are also sites like VRBO.COM (Vacation Rentals By Owner) and AIRBNB.COM, but you sometimes have to weed through a lot of not-so-great homes to find a few good ones. Reading reviews is essential in finding a good home, as well as making sure the location of the home is in an area convenient for you. Don’t be afraid to haggle on the price, especially if you are traveling off-season; you will never know unless you ask. Owning a vacation home is a luxury, but most owners rely on their rent income and would rather have something coming in than none at all. I have booked a five-bedroom oceanfront villa on Turks and Caicos Islands for the price of one hotel room when I was able to have direct contact with the owner and explained that it was only my husband and me who would be staying there, but wanted to check it out for a larger family vacation in the future. I have even found owners of luxury properties who let us drive their car they keep in the garage for a fraction of what a rented car cost. When traveling from one place to another every few days, it makes more sense to book hotel rooms. I like small boutique hotels that have more flavor of the country we are in rather than large hotel chains with rooms that all look alike. I usually search on TripAdvisor.com for the top-rated hotels and then cross-reference them with a site called SMALL LUXURY HOTELS OF THE WORLD. Once I find a few hotels that interest me I start checking online rates. However, if you call the hotel directly you can usually get an even better price. I also learned a little trick from an expat owner of a boutique hotel in Istanbul who contracts with online booking sites and is required to save a percentage of rooms. If a hotel shows they have no vacancy you might find rooms left through sites

such as Expedia and Hotels.com. I recently did just that when trying to book a hotel in Spain and I was told they were full. I jumped online and was able to grab two more rooms through Booking.com. If you don’t mind paying up front there is a great site called JETSETTER.COM that offers exclusive deals on the world's greatest properties. All of the resorts and hotels they feature are hand-selected by their globetrotting correspondents with special deals lasting just a few days. I just booked a premium room at a five-star hotel in Madrid for $167/night that normally goes for $682/night. If all the research and time isn’t your thing in finding the perfect place to stay, but you want to do something truly unique, I recommend LINDBLAD EXPEDITIONS. The company's underlying mission is to introduce "curious and intrepid travelers to the international capitals of wildness." Operating a fleet of small ships that nose into ports where large cruise ships cannot go, they are accompanied by expert naturalists including National Geographic photographers offering life-changing encounters with beauty and seldom-seen nature. Lindblad’s emphasis is on active exploration, learning and sustainable tourism in places like Alaska, Antarctica and Galapagos. Whether your ideal vacation involves a passport or an RV, I challenge you this year to not just watch the Travel Channel, live it. In this day and age, travel is a bit more complicated, but there have never been so many resources at our fingertips to help us plan a great vacation. Don’t be afraid to venture out. The key to safe travel is being aware of your surroundings. Visit the places you have always wanted to see and experience the sites you have dreamed of while you are strong and healthy enough to get around and hopefully finding the best places to stay will just make it even better.
