ENNIS PUBLIC THEATRE NEW HOME, SAME MISSION The show must go on, only this time somewhere new. The Ennis Public Theatre has moved to a new location in Historical Downtown Ennis. They opened with 100 Years of Broadway and will put on a production of Wait Until Dark at the end of May. Specializing in family friendly comedies, mysteries, musicals, and children’s shows, the theatre puts on productions year round. Since the new building did not previously serve as a theatre, it took quite a bit of creative vision to see the space through to its final stage. “When you walk through the door you are greeted by a beautiful foyer and lobby area… just as beautiful, if not more, than many theatres in the DFW area,” Artistic Director Shelley Aubrey said. For all those who have seen the theatre, it is hard to deny that the job was done well. The theatre is always open for people who are looking to participate in some way. “We

1 cup of kale, tightly packed 1 cup of cilantro, tightly packed 1/4 cup slivered almonds, toasted 1 garlic clove 1 serrano chile 1 tbsp lime juice Dash of salt 1/4 cup of parmesan, grated 1/2 cup of olive oil 1 knob ginger, sliced into shards olive oil 2 carrots, sliced into ribbons 1/4 cup of shredded coconut, toasted 1 box (8 oz) Explore Cuisine Edamame Spaghetti

BUILDING BLOCKS: A NEW HOME BUILDER’S GUIDE BY DIANE JOHNSON COLLARD PHOTOS BY THIBAUT

Springtime traditionally encourages the mood for change in our home. There are many factors to this urge to redo or uproot. Do you remodel, update or just relocate? What better time to consider a change than the spring when everything around us is changing. Summer is coming soon and we start thinking about the events of the next few months, too. The spring flowers and pending yard work could encourage the thought of a smaller yard. The upcoming heat might remind you how much you have always wanted a pool but never had the room for it. What about that guest room that you have needed every holiday? The kids will be out of school, so summer is a good time to start fresh. The weather is good, so builders are working day and night to complete the hundreds of new homes being built all over the county. Chances are, you could be in that new home by September. Now that the seed is planted, where do you start? You have to decide the area

you want to live in, the school you want to send your children to and then there is the builder... Choosing a builder is the hardest element of this newfound idea. Do you want a track house, a semi-custom home or a truly custom home? There is a difference. Budget has a lot to do with your choice. Of course, the track home is going to be much more affordable. The downside is that construction is fast and not always as efficient as it could be. The homes are generally on small lots and the designs are much the same. Your personal choices on colors and interior selections are little to none. If you want fast and economical, this is probably the best choice for you. However, don’t go into this thinking that you can add elements to enhance the basic construction without paying a high penalty. These homes are priced as basic with no frills. They may have a lot of living space, but it is bare bones basic. You can spend far more than you expected if you start making changes or additions.

If you want more trim and a little higher quality finish out, you might want to upgrade to a semi-custom home. Generally, the builder will have his own plans, but small changes can be made to accommodate your needs. So, you do have a limited range for creativity and personalized space. Most semi-custom builders have a model home. In this model, generally the higher grade flooring, trim and cabinet designs are used to show the home at it’s best. Beware, for each of these upgrades come at a high price. Semi-custom builders will probably have a show room with samples of tile, granite, roofing, brick and lighting. You are restricted to the choices in their showroom. The base price you are quoted is based on the least expensive choices. As you look at the selections, you are most likely not going to like those basic choices. The higher grade merchandise is priced out at an elevated cost. It can make a big difference in the bottom line.

Neighborhoods are typically more upscale with more features. Sometimes the subdivision fencing is stone and iron instead of cedar with stone columns. Sometimes there is an extravagant entrance to the community. A club house and community pool might be added to encourage sales. The bottom line here is, are you getting the quality and the look you are after at a fair price? If you are getting everything you need and are happy with the basic construction, then this could be the home for you. A truly custom home is one that you start from the ground up. You may or may not have a plan that you want to start with. An architect can put all of your thoughts together with the plan that you like and make it exactly what you want. The only limitation is your budget. Having your own personalized home drawn is really not that big in the scheme

of things. The amount you spend on plans will save you greatly on disappointments and mistakes in the end.

a change after something is done, there is an additional fee for time and labor to make that change.

With a custom builder you can go anywhere to make your selections of brick, stone, granite, tile and floor coverings. If you see it online, you can use it. If you find it in a showroom, you can use it. If you see it in a magazine, you can copy it. The creativity of your interior and exterior design is unlimited.

Appliances are a big deal for some people, but some have no desire to make that selection. If appliances are important to you, you must make sure that you can get what you want without paying too much due to change order fees. Track homes have basic appliances and there is no choice.

In custom homes, the builder will have an itemized specification sheet with allowances for all of your major selections. After looking at the collection of pictures you have accumulated and discussing with you the finish out that you desire, a price is worked out.

Semi-custom homes offer some upgrades, but make sure the cost difference is fair. You might want to ask for a credit that you can use to purchase your own appliances.

Often custom builders work on a cost plus basis. They add anywhere from 10% to 15% of the total cost for their fee. Whatever you spend is what you spend with no up charges. However, if there is

yourself very limited in selections. Part of this is due to the additions that are included in that allowance. Light bulbs, canned lights, outdoor lighting, flood lights, under and over counter lighting, garage lights, even the door bell is included in this budget. By the time you take all of that out of the total there often isn’t much left for actual decorative lighting. Don’t be surprised if you go over budget here. It is one of the most common areas of sticker shock. In track houses there is little to no choice in fixtures and rarely are there any special lighting features, so this will not apply. The other sticker shock item is granite. There are so many additions such as sink cutouts and special edges that it eats up your budget. If you have a $50 per sq ft allowance you have to remember that choosing a $49 per sq ft granite is going to take you over budget. There again, track home builders and often semi-custom builders will use only basic

granite styles that fits into their assigned budget. You are limited to that budget selection. There is no difference in granite quality. All granite is taken from the mountains and it is all formed in God’s perfect way. The difference in price comes from the availability of the materials. Some granite patterns are in great abundance, so the price is much lower than granite that is considered rare. So don’t be afraid of granite that costs far less than others. Your quality is the same. If it is what you like, it works as well as anything out there. In track homes and semi-custom homes all decisions have to be made before the house is started. No changes can be made, without a substantial fee. You will have one meeting to choose paint and tile and then just sit back until moving day. One thing is for sure, if you are building a custom home, getting a little help in

making decisions can make this process much easier. Every decision is yours. Everything from where to put the electrical plugs to how high the dining room light fixtures hangs is a personal decision. I think I could continue this article into a full book if I covered all of the aspects of home construction and the process. There is so much to learn. Hopefully this small contribution has given you food for thought. If I have helped you think through the process just a little more aware, I have done my job. Have a wonderful colorful spring! There is nothing wrong with having a modest bedroom, however in my experience, most people leave their room for last. Why is that? When you have kids or a demanding job, sometimes the Master bedroom can be a haven for you. (For example, yesterday the kids were wrestling with each other and sounded like shrieking dinosaurs, so I shut my bedroom door and told them to only get me out if they drew blood.) The bedroom is the first thing you see in the morning and the last thing you see before you close your eyes. Just like the proverbial oxygen mask on an airplane, if you love your bedroom, you will feel recharged for your other responsibilities. Here are some tips to get your own room in shape and transform it from an afterthought to a place of rest and rejuvenation.

UPDATE YOUR LOOK If it has been more than 3-5 years since you have refreshed your style, take a look at what is popular in stores and magazines. This is very difficult in our own home because our eyes glaze over issues after we see them so many times. You need a completely impartial opinion. To help with this, I tell clients to imagine they are hosting a big party or having a high school friend come visit. Then walk through the house and see what they will be seeing when they walk through the door. Obviously, you don’t want to completely redo your house based on what is trendy, however, you can bring in some updates that will refresh your room and keep things current. ADD A CHAIR The chair in my bedroom has a lot of functions. Mainly, it houses clothes that I need to hang up. (Better than my treadmill, right?) However, I love having it

there because it means I can retreat to a quiet place and read, check emails, or just sit and pray or think. If you don’t have a place to sit in your bedroom besides your bed, this might be a great choice for you! You do not have to make huge changes to create a more beautiful, cohesive space for your Master Bedroom. Even making one change can completely change the feeling of the room. One of the most helpful changes you can make is to begin to focus on your needs for flow and function and decide you want a bedroom you love. Don’t despair if you cannot make huge changes all at first. When you begin to think about your space differently, you will begin to think of creative ways to update your space and begin to love your home. Check tomatoes for signs of early blight (yellow blotches on lower leaves). Apply a labeled fungicide if needed. SHUMARD OAK The Shumard Oak is a large, deciduous tree reaching heights of 120 feet and a width of 50-60 feet. The Shumard Oak tolerates full sun and low to medium water requirements. This Texas native produces acorns eaten by wildlife. The Shumard Oak is a fast growing tree with orange to deep red fall color. Oak wilt can be a disease problem.

Buy and plant crape myrtles in bloom to be sure you are getting the desired color. Know the variety’s mature size to avoid future pruning. Ask for varieties that are resistant to powdery mildew. This is the best time to plant vinca (periwinkle) in full sun. Look for the variety ‘Cora’ since it is resistant to soil-borne diseases. Water with drip irrigation or soaker hose to keep water off foliage. Plant these tropical annuals for their flowers: tropical hibiscus, ‘Gold Star’ esperanza, mandevilla and Mexican heather. To deal with the hot weather, water deeply and less often. Hand-water newly planted trees and shrubs. Wrap the trunks of newly-planted shumard oak and Chinese pistache trees to prevent sunscald and borers. Take a critical look at your landscape while at the height of summer development. Make notes on how the landscape can be better arranged; plants that need replacement, overgrown plants that need to be removed; or possibly, areas that can be converted to more family-friendly activities. Save this information for implementation later in the year or next spring.

DESERT WILLOW The Desert Willow is a small, deciduous tree reaching heights of 15-20 feet and a width of 15-20 feet. It has low water needs and tolerates full sun. Beautiful trumpet-shaped, sweetly fragrant pink to light purple flowers occur from late spring to fall depending on rain. Its ability to withstand arid conditions, beautiful flowers and long flowering period make the Desert Willow one of Texas’s best small, native trees.

Typically at our gym, Swink Athletics, we see an influx of people right as summer starts or right before it starts. The goal these people are after? You guessed it, weightloss/getting in shape for the summer or to look better in a bathing suit. Sure, getting started to get in better looking shape is always good, but most often people miss the main point and that is to be a healthier version of themselves. I’m going to give you guys some great ways to start getting in great shape today as well as live a healthier lifestyle for tomorrow and beyond.

1.

It’s no secret that diet plays a huge role in anyone getting fitter or healthier. However, it’s definitely the last straw for most when it comes to getting in shape. When people step foot in our gym, we make sure they know it’s more than a workout, it’s a lifestyle change, as cheesy or overused as that may sound.

2. We’ve seen people lose more weight and become healthier by just eating cleaner versus working alone. So, the key here is to start eating better. How? Start small to make lasting changes. The first thing you should start eliminating over time is any and all added sugars. Added sugars are those that do not exist naturally in nature. Fruit has sugar, but it’s a part of the food naturally. Cake contains sugar, but was added to make it more delicious. As do donuts or sodas or basically any food that has been made or processed. This sounds crazy, but I’ve witnessed people drop as much as 10 lbs. by quitting sodas. 3. Next on the list would be to start preparing your own meals. This is so important for not only your stress levels, but for your health as well. Stressing about what you’re going to eat later or where you’re

going to get your next meal from is avoidable. Stress is a whole other factor for weight gain/loss, but we’ll save that for another time. Planning is how successful people continue to succeed. This is definitely a start-small type of change. Not only do you get to see what you’re putting in your food but you are also getting a chance to avoid what restaurants are putting in your food. A great place to start is using Pinterest for recipes. The fewer the ingredients, the better. Last thing on this topic, EAT YOUR VEGGIES AND LOTS OF THEM! 4. Being active other than working out. Sounds doable but most don’t realize how much sitting or “inactive” time they have in a day, especially if you have a desk job. Get up and move more than you currently do. On your lunch break, go for a walk. Do laundry and while it’s washing, go for a short run. Do you have kids in sports? While they’re at the fields practicing, go for a walk or run or even do some squats or pushups. They have bleachers or stairs I’m sure, so walk them and grab some other parents to join you so you can all benefit and be accountable. Just move more.

The goal will always be to lower yourself as deep as possible while maintaining the heels on the ground, the chest upright and the core engaged. Placing the arms out in front of you will help counterbalance your weight as you lower into your squat. As you stand, just like the jumprope, stand tall with shoulders over your hips and feet and tighten your abs and glutes.

Also as you lower, be sure to keep the knees over the toes and slightly towards your pinky toe. This keeps the glutes active as you squat and keeps the knees safe.

start here The goal behind this workout is to keep intensity high to help jumpstart the body and metabolism. There is rest in this workout and it should be taken. Resist working through the rest and make sure to recover almost 100% before trying another round. This will allow you to give you 100% during the time you’re working.

This workout is up to 10 Rounds, resting as needed between rounds and each round as fast as possible (this is relative to each person)

1. 1 SHUTTLE RUN For this, you’ll need to walk out 20 large steps, making a mark on both ends. This will be your distance for the run. For each shuttle run, you’ll run down and back between the marks 5 times, that equals 1 rep.

This is just like elementary school when you did jumprope then. Just 1 pass of the rope under the feet equals 1 rep. Just knock out 100 of those.

5. The last tip before giving you a workout you can do at home is to list your priorities. As some of you may roll your eyes or even say “I know my priorities” at this comment, this exercise couldn’t be more for you. You can only imagine how many people we get in the gym that tell us they want to lose weight or be in better shape and when it comes time to do the things needed like meal prep/cooking their own meals or even going for an extra jog on the weekends, they find a “way out” or the “I was busy” saying or many other reasons preventing them from success.

These are definitely some of the basic, very broad tips we give someone new to fitness and health, something obtainable within a few weeks time. Not only do we have people see amazing results, but they start to establish great habits and become more confident in themselves and their ability to overcome obstacles. In addition to all of these tips, if you’re also working out, you could see even faster results and have a reason to eat cleaner and keep your focus. As part of the tips I’ve given you, I am giving you a workout you could do at home to get you started in a routine. As always, be sure to consult your doctor before starting any workout routine.

It’s simple, ask yourself how badly you want something then do the things needed to get there. This may mean you have to adjust your priorities a bit to make this happen. Maybe that means going to bed earlier so you can get up sooner to go for a run before life starts for the day.

3. 25 SQUATS You’ll just need to make sure you’re performing a Squat properly. To do this, you’ll need to make sure to brace your core as if someone were to punch you in the stomach. Then, sit back into your heels and begin to sit down as if you were sitting into a chair. From there, try to lower your hips as low as you can, as long as your heels stay put and your chest stays up. When you stand up, be sure to activate the right muscles by making sure your knees don’t collapse inwards and squeezing your core and butt tight. That’s 1 rep and if you can hold a weight while doing so, go for it. It can be a dumbbell if you have it or a backpack with books in it or a dog, whatever you’d like! UNDERSTANDING CLINICAL TRIALS AND THE PURPOSE IN PARTICIPATION When I was a child, I struggled with asthma. To help my condition, my doctor gave me an inhaler that contained a preventative asthma medication. It was easy to use and it helped make physical activities easier for me. I was able to play my favorite sports without fearing I wouldn’t be able to breathe. This helped give me a better quality of life as a child. I no longer struggle with asthma, but I am thankful that there was a treatment available to help my condition. For me it was an asthma medication and an inhaler. For some it may be insulin or a blood sugar monitor. For others it may simply be an over the counter medication for a common cold or a headache. All medications or medical devices available for use by the general population are so only because of individuals who were first willing to volunteer to participate in clinical trials. Clinical trials are research studies that seek to answer questions about medical treatments, medical devices or medical strategies. All medical treatments and devices start as ideas. Those ideas are then developed and tested in the laboratory. If the research on these new developments is promising and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approves further research testing, then the idea may move forward into clinical trials with human volunteers. All potential treatments and devices are tested first in Phase 1 trials, which will only assess whether or not the products are safe for hu-

man use. If the products show to be generally safe, then the treatments or devices will continue into Phase 2 and 3 trials with larger numbers of volunteers. These trials continue to answer questions about safety, but also begin to assess how well a product works to improve patient outcomes, if it will benefit a patient, or if the product causes unexpected harm. The FDA monitors and reviews the research data on investigational treatments and devices very closely during all phases of clinical trials and can stop the trials at any time. After all trials are completed, the FDA may or may not decide to approve a new treatment or device. Only after FDA approval will these ideas turned treatments end up in our medicine cabinets. Research then continues on these treatments or devices after they enter the marketplace. There are many reasons why people choose to participate in clinical trials. The top reasons include to advance medicine, to help improve the lives of others, to help improve their own medical condition or to supplement their own standard health care. If you choose to join a clinical trial, you can expect to first be thoroughly informed about the study, what the study is testing, information about study appointments and procedures, potential risks and benefits and your role as a participant. The study doctor, also called an Investigator, will assess whether or not you would be eligible to participate in the study. Your eligibility may depend on

Throughout the course of your participation in a trial, you can expect your health to be monitored very closely by the Investigator and the study team. This is done through a series of visits to the clinical research site before, during and after a study treatment or device is received or used. Had no one ever participated in clinical trials for asthma, I may not have had access to a medication that helped my condition improve as a child. We’ve all been there. You wake up one morning with big plans for the day. You take a look at yourself in the mirror, and there staring back at you is a big red pimple on your face. Acne has struck again! Acne is the most common skin condition in the United States. Most people have dealt with acne at some point. Let’s go over some basics of acne and its treatment. WHO GETS ACNE? Males and females both get acne. Acne is especially common in teenagers and young adults. However, acne can occur or persist into adulthood. Some women can develop acne as they reach middle age. WHY DO WE GET ACNE? In acne, pores get clogged. Typically, as skin cells die, they are sloughed off, and pores remain clear. However, when excess oil (known as sebum) is produced, this sloughing of dead skin cells does not occur, leading to clogged pores. Finally, this bacterial burden inside the clogged pore can result in rupture of the pore. Sebum leaks into areas of the skin where it should not be. Additionally, P. acnes releases inflammatory chemicals. All of these events trigger the body’s immune system to react to clear this insult, causing inflammation. And an acne lesion has been born. WHAT ARE SOME AT HOME TIPS FOR DEALING WITH ACNE? In addition to treatment regimens, routine maintenance can be performed to keep acne under control. For example, it is best if you

wash your face twice daily (e.g., morning and night) and after sweating. If sweat and oil are allowed to sit on the skin, this makes you more susceptible to having clogged pores. Washing your hair daily can also help. Oily hair can contribute to acne, especially on the forehead. It is particularly important to wash before going to bed at night. Sleeping on sweaty or oily skin can flare acne. Additionally, be gentle with your skin. Use your fingertips for cleaning the face and applying treatments, instead of scrubbing the face with a washcloth or other. Use gentle non-alcohol cleansers as opposed to using cleansers that can irritate the skin (e.g., astringents, exfoliants). Avoid picking or popping pimples. This can actually lead to dark spots and scarring. WHAT MEDICATIONS CAN TREAT ACNE? Most cases of acne can be successfully treated with today’s many available medication options. First, it is important to keep in mind that acne treatments do not work instantly. Daily regimens must be adhered to in order to improve acne. Even with improvement or clearance of acne, continued adherence is necessary to maintain improvement and prevent recurrences of acne. I like to think of acne treatment as a stair-step approach from conservative to aggressive treatments, depending on the severity of acne and the patient’s wishes in each case. For mild acne, conservative approaches can be utilized with over the counter products. Generally, the most effective over-the-counter treatments contain benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid. Finally, for severe acne, especially consisting

of nodulocystic lesions and scarring, an oral retinoid (known as isotretinoin) can be prescribed. Along the way, particularly tender acne bumps can be injected with steroid to decrease inflammation and improve the lesions. So, consider visiting your dermatologist if over the counter treatments are not preventing acne or you are embarrassed by your acne. He believes a trip to the dentist can be fun, educational and pleasant for all his patients and their families. how kids develop dental problems Kids’ cavities are formed when bacteria has an opportunity to feast on sugars and starches in the food they eat. The process forms acidic waste that causes the outer enamel of the teeth to break down resulting in cavities. Almost always, it is the snackers, grazers and nibblers who are at highest risk of getting cavities (also called caries). Early childhood caries (ECC) is a significant public health problem affecting children. By kindergarten age, 40% of children have caries. It is the most common chronic disease of childhood, with over four million children affected nationwide.

what can a parent do? Dr. A. knows that parents worry about their children’s health and wellbeing, and he is interested in educating them about the causes and consequences of dental problems. He is especially excited about teaching how to prevent as many as possible. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry encourages parents to take their children to a pediatric dentist for an examination before 1 year of age. Many problems can be avoided by early detection and preventive measures. It is recommended that parents minimize saliva-sharing activities like sharing utensils to avoid passing the cavity causing bacteria from one mouth to another. Parents should also avoid letting their children frequently consume liquid or solid food containing sugar. That includes soft drinks and juices. Infants should never be put to sleep with a bottle containing juice or milk since that could be left on the teeth while sleeping. Drinking from a cup as early as possible is encouraged. Most importantly, children’s teeth need to be brushed at least 2 times each day to remove food and drink debris and sugars, especially just before bed. can children brush their own teeth? Children can brush their own teeth, and at Just for Kids, they are carefully taught at each of their checkups. Unfortunately, the motor skills of children are not sufficient to clean the teeth well until about the age of 8. Parents should help and watch over their brushing until they can tie their own shoes.

RECOGNIZING PTSD BY JOHN R. SKINNER, JR., PH.D.

Dear Dr. Skinner, I’m worried about my brother. He just returned from his third deployment to Afghanistan. He has trouble going to sleep, wakes up sweating and yelling, is really jumpy, and gets mad easily. He sometimes sits alone or goes to a closet and will not talk to anyone. What is going on and what can we do for him? Your brother sounds like he may be suffering from Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). PTSD has received increasing attention as more veterans return from the Middle East. Unfortunately, there are misunderstandings of PTSD sufferers, partly due to portrayals of these persons as psychos or recluses living deep in some forest and the violent actions of a very few.

PTSD SYMPTOMS AND TREATMENT OPTIONS THE 4 Signs of PTSD PTSD symptoms are individual in experience and severity. A person must have experienced severe and/or prolonged stress, including combat, a car wreck, witnessing trauma in others or physical/emotional abuse. Symptoms can include:

1. RE-EXPERIENCING

flashbacks, physical symptoms (high heart rate, sweating, trembling), bad dreams, scary thoughts

2. AVOIDANCE: avoiding reminders of the trauma places, events, objects, people, activities, thoughts and feelings

3. AROUSAL/REACTIVITY:

easily startled, tension, sleep problems, anger outbursts

4. COGNITION/MOOD: inability to remember elements

of the event, negative thoughts

about the self, world and ability to manage the world, distortion

of feelings, unwarranted guilt or shame, loss of interest

THE HISTORY OF PTSD

PTSD was first clearly recognized in World War I, when it was called “shell shock”. During World War II, this syndrome was referred to as “battle fatigue” or the “2000-yard stare”. Battle fatigue was also experienced by nurses and civilians. Military psychiatric hospitalizations reached 367,815 in 1944. Today, this reaction to extreme stress is called PTSD. Among active duty soldiers returning from Iraq, roughly 12% report mental health problems upon their return, with 17% reporting mental health problems 6 months after their return.

THE SYMPTOMS

PTSD is not a sign of weakness or shame. It is also not limited to the military. Over half of my patients with PTSD have not served in the military. PTSD is a brief or lasting reaction to some prolonged and/or severe stress that can be mild to severe. The intense emotion associated with the stress seems to over-stimulate one of the body’s stress management systems to the point that it has difficulty settling down. Learning to recognize and remember stressful or dangerous things is positive for our survival. When this gets out of hand and does not settle down, it interferes with our lives: work, relationships, interactions, sleep, dreams, energy and concentration, among others.

THE TREATMENT

Re-experiencing symptoms may seem to come from nowhere. Avoidance symptoms serve to avoid reminders or triggers of symptoms, for instance, avoiding driving or riding in a car after seeing or being in a bad car wreck. Cognitive and mood symptoms can begin after the trauma or be worsened by it. A person can experience a mixture or all of these symptoms PTSD is a treatable disorder. Treatment can involve medication, psychotherapy or both. If there is an ongoing trauma, such as an abusive relationship or anxiety disorder, then both need to be addressed. Drugs and alcohol make things worse. There are no psychoactive medications specific to PTSD treatment, but antidepressants and anti-anxiety medications may be used. Being a Strong Man Starts with a Strong Heart

PASS THE TEST Leading advocacy organizations such as the American Heart Association (AHA) believe that a series of simple tests performed routinely beginning in early adulthood are the bedrock of detecting heart disease early. Adults at normal risk of heart disease should begin the following screenings at age 20, according to AHA:

1. blood pressure check: at least once every two years. 2. cholesterol check: every 4-6 years. 3. weight/body mass index (bmi) every visit to a health care provider. 4.

waist circumference – as needed, especially in case of elevated BMI.

* starting at age 45, the AHA recommends a blood glucose test at least every three years.

The end of 2016 provided a stark reminder of how potent the top killer of men (and women) still is with the deaths of two male icons due to various forms of heart disease at relatively young ages. One of the all-time great television dads, Alan Thicke, passed away at 69, while pop legend George Michael allegedly died of heart disease-related complications at only 53. In each case, the fatal cardiovascular event appears to have been relatively unexpected, begging the question: given the resources celebrities have, if they couldn’t head off heart disease, how can most regular guys? “Screenings for cholesterol, blood glucose levels, blood pressure, tobacco use and body mass index – which all measure possible contributing factors to heart disease – are widely available and part of just about every primary care setting,” says John Shelton, RRT, CES, team leader for cardiovascular and pulmonary rehabilitation at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Waxahachie. DETECTION = FIRST STEP IN PREVENTION

While not all sudden heart or vascular events can be prevented, heart disease typically is something that develops over a long period of time, making the prevention of heart attack, heart failure and stroke – some of the most common, serious forms of cardiovascular disease – possible. “The key to preventing and managing cardiovascular disease is early detection, and the best way to find out if you’re at risk is through regular check-ups,” says Shelton. Unfortunately, rou-

tine visits to the doctor’s office seem to be low on the priority list for many men. MANAGING RISK…BEFORE AND AFTER

Men avoiding these screenings or a trip to the doctor because they are afraid they will be diagnosed with heart disease should know that there are many options for early intervention that don’t involve major surgery. In fact, by finding and addressing heart disease early on, the more likely it is that a major cardiovascular event or surgery can be avoided. In addition to medications, minimally invasive procedures to clear blocked arteries and lifestyle changes, cardiac rehabilitation also may be options for select individuals at risk of a serious cardiovascular event or who are recovering from one. “Cardiac rehab has been shown to have numerous benefits, including a significant reduction in all-cause mortality, as well as fewer symptoms of angina, shortness of breath and fatigue, and improved physical activity,” says Shelton. It is ideal for patients who have experienced a heart attack or heart failure, or who have had bypass surgery, a heart transplant, valve surgery, angioplasty or who have had a stent placed. Cardiac rehabilitation may involve monitored physical activity to increase cardiovascular efficiency, as well as education, stress management and nutrition counseling. While a cardiac rehabilitation program may only last six weeks to a few months, the results may provide a lifetime of benefit.

When our former State Representative, Jim Pitts, called and told me he was bringing Mark Zuckerberg to lunch at the Doves Nest, I assumed he was kidding. I mean why on earth would the Co- Founder and CEO of Facebook be coming to Waxahachie? Zuckerberg is known for the ambitious challenges he sets for himself at the beginning of each year, from learning to speak Mandarin, only eating meat from an animal he has killed himself and running 365 miles. For 2017 he posted on his Facebook page: “After a tumultuous last year, my hope for this challenge is to get out and talk to more people about how they’re living, working and thinking about the future.” Since he had business in Dallas/Fort Worth, he made Texas his first stop. He wanted to visit West, TX because he remembered the fertilizer company explosion and how it affected the small town. He was also interested in speaking to religious leaders in Waco. Noticing Waxahachie was on the way, he decided it might be a good place to stop for lunch and meet with community leaders and a top student in computer science. The following day his advance security team came to survey where he would be seated and to check out the building exits. After touring the Ellis County Courthouse, he walked into the Doves Nest true to form in his signature jeans and hoodie, looking more like a college kid than the fifth wealthiest man in the world. It was fun watching the expressions on customers’ faces as he walked through the dining room and sat down. I was fortunate to join the group at the

table and recommended he try our King Ranch Casserole as the special for the day. He had not heard of the Texas dish and seemed to love it. I was impressed with how engaging he was with each one of us. He was kind and asked each of us our thoughts on where the country was headed, our feelings on religion and our sense of community life. Having read Zuckerberg’s Facebook posts before he arrived, he doesn’t actually refer to the 2016 election, but writes about a “greater sense of division” in the country.” He goes on to say after Donald Trump won the presidential election, some in Silicon Valley admitted they were disconnected with much of the country. Polls have reported that 13 percent of Americans say they either “unfriended,” “blocked” or stopped following people on Facebook after the election. I’m sure Facebook would rather see friends bridging the gap rather than leaving the site altogether. Who doesn’t want to share in a community with people who have the same goals and values? But it’s also good to have a healthy discussion and debate issues important to both sides. I have numerous friends on Facebook who I know hold different political views than I do, but I’m not looking to end our friendship over it. As pleasurable as it might be for a right wing conservative to expunge her screaming liberal cousin from her Facebook feed, social media breakups don’t necessarily change hearts and minds. My husband and I recently met friends for brunch that we have known for almost 20 years, yet somewhere between the Bloody Marys and Eggs Benedict, the

conversation went south. My friend began rambling about wearing a pink hat and marching for women’s rights in Austin. She continued on with how she was confident President Trump will be impeached and then said something about how she had blocked me on Facebook. Wait, what? Long before there was Facebook, people have always disagreed on how our country should be run. Abraham Lincoln said “We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory will swell when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.” After Zuckerberg left Texas he posted: “In many ways, I still don’t have a clear sense of Texas. This state is complex, and everyone has a lot of layers--as Americans, as Texans, as members of a local community, and even just as individuals. But this trip has helped me understand just how important community is, and how we’re all just looking for something we can trust.” He messaged Jim Pitts on Facebook a few days later thanking him for facilitating his trip to Waxahachie and introducing him to his first King Ranch Casserole. Whatever your Facebook friend’s views are about politics it should mean infinitesimally less to you than what they’ve meant in your life. They are the very reason you should even care about politics in the first place.
