¿Cuándo es la Celebración de El Mundo?

Esa pregunta la contestamos simplemente: Cada vez que sale una edición es motivo de celebración, tanto para los lectores como para quienes trabajamos en redacción, producción, distribución, comercialización y administración. En los 40 años que lleva El Mundo Newspaper, siempre orientado y manejado por la familia Vasallo, el solo hecho de poner a circular miles de ejemplares ya es motivo de regocijo. El lector fiel siempre busca sus secciones favoritas o le da una “ojeada” al material informativo para estar actualizado. Sacar una edición, es decir, un periódico una sola vez es muy fácil. Pero sostenerse 40 años con el esfuerzo diario de brindar información, educación y entretenimiento es algo que exige perseverancia, fe en lo que se hace y amor por el oficio. El Mundo pasó de ser un periódico a convertirse en una empresa diversa que programa eventos, apoya campañas comunitarias y estimula a los estudiantes. Como medio de gran influencia en la comunidad es un generador de opinión y el vocero de todos. Eventos como el Latino Family Festival, el Latino Youth Recognition Day y el Hispanic Heritage Breakfast, son acontecimientos de gran calibre que impulsan iniciativas valiosas. En el Festival anual, la información sobre salud, servicios para la familia y artistas de primera, les llegan directamente a los inmigrantes. El Desayuno de la Herencia Hispana reúne a importantes ejecutivos que dicen verdades en medio de sonrisas. El Día de Reconocimiento a la Juventud estimula a los estudiantes a seguir en las aulas, prepararse y tomar la responsabilidad de representar dignamente a su comunidad. La función social de El Mundo va más allá de informar, educar y recrear. En estos 40 años no hay un solo día de celebración: cada fecha, cada salida del periódico es la oportunidad para reconocer este esfuerzo y agradecer a todos aquellos que lo hacen posible. Alberto Vasallo, el padre y fundador, la señora Flor María, dueña de gran bondad para administrar con sabiduría, y la creatividad interminable de Alberto III “Albertico” son respaldados por un equipo que cumple su misión diaria con vocación de servicio.

Lo último en inmigración

Muchas personas han confundido la Acción Diferida con el Dream Act. Recordemos que ninguna de las dos es una nueva ley. La acción Diferida (una decisión ejecutiva tomada por el presidente Obama) concede a los estudiantes entre 16 y 30 años de edad el beneficio del permiso de trabajo por dos años y la esperanza de solicitar la residencia permanente. No es una promesa de ciudadanía.

El Congreso está considerando la ley DREAM. Sería conceder la residencia legal a estudiantes inmigrantes indocumentados.

Requisitos: los que entraron a Estados Unidos antes de cumplir 16 y han estado aquí continuamente por lo menos cinco años antes de la aprobación del proyecto de ley, se graduó de una escuela secundaria estadounidense, obtuvo un GED, han sido aceptados en una universidad, o se unieron a las fuerzas armadas. El proyecto de ley también dice que deben tener entre las edades de 12 y 35 años en el momento de la solicitud y deben ser de “buen carácter moral”. No es una ley todavía.

Todavía debe ser considerado y votado por el Congreso en la próxima sesión, y muchas cosas al respecto podrían cambiar o ser añadido y eliminado. Si se convierte en ley, cumpliendo todo el proceso, su aplicación sería para el próximo año.

El fenómeno migratorio toca tierras de Panamá y Colombia. El jefe del servicio migratorio de Panamá dijo que al menos tres migrantes cubanos han muerto este año en su intento de cruzar a Panamá por la boscosa frontera con Colombia. Es la primera vez que se informa en Panamá sobre la lucha de algunos cubanos por llegar a los Estados Unidos, exponiendo su vida en la selvática región de El Darién. Se cree que cada semana entran a Panamá de 40 a 50 cubanos, cruzando la frontera con Colombia. El año pasado fueron detectados 400 cubanos. La cifra es 4 veces mayor en el presente año: han sido interceptados 1,894.

El recorrido para estos migrantes está lleno de riesgos.

Muchos llegan a Ecuador, donde no les exigen visa, atraviesan Colombia, pasan la selva de El Darién y llegan a Panamá.

Quienes no siguen hacia los Estados Unidos, cruzando fronteras, se quedan en Panamá donde el gobierno les concede permiso de trabajo. La vía de Panamá también es recorrida por africanos y asiáticos con la ilusión de llegar a USA.

Lanzan programa para educar a latinos sobre Alzheimer

N

ovartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation (NPC), en colaboración con Univision, ha lanzado una iniciativa que busca educar e informar a la comunidad hispana sobre la enfermedad de Alzheimer.

Según investigaciones de la Alzheimer’s Association de los Estados Unidos, la cantidad de hispanos de edad avanzada con Alzheimer y demencias relacionadas podría aumentar más de seis veces, de menos de 200,000 casos actuales a un total que podría llegar a los 1.3 millones en 2050.

Los estudios también demuestran que las familias hispanas poseen un mayor nivel de responsabilidad en lo referente al cuidado de las personas mayores y la aceptación de las disfunciones cognitivas y la demencia como parte normal del

envejecimiento.

A pesar de que las familias están fuertemente comprometidas a cuidar a sus seres queridos, es posible que al no poseer información adecuada sobre la enfermedad de Alzheimer no puedan atender apropiadamente las necesidades de los miembros de la familia.

“La comunidad hispana se enfrenta a una multiplicidad de desafíos e ideas equivocadas que afectan su comprensión y reconocimiento de la enfermedad. Para superar algunas de esas divergencias, NPC desea ayudar a crear conciencia y mejorar la comprensión de la enfermedad y las opciones de tratamiento”, afirmó André Wyss, Presidente de Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation.

Celebrating Together: Hispanic Heritage Breakfast in Boston...

In a city steeped in tradition, El Mundo Newspaper proudly continues a new one that began last year and has grown to unexpected heights. In 2010, El Mundo Hispanic Heritage Breakfast looked to become an annual tradition for New England’s Latino community in the same spirit that the annual St. Patrick’s Day Breakfast and the MLK Breakfast provide for the rich and diverse community of Greater New England. This year we make good again on that promise.

In honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month, El Mundo will once again highlight the many idiosyncrasies and characteristics that make up the diverse Latino community of New England through the eyes and ears of our friends representing some of this great Commonwealth’s most traditional institutions.

The third annual El Mundo Hispanic Heritage Breakfast’s purpose is to bring together a diverse range of representatives from the distinct fabric of New England society in a joyous setting that we know will bring about a few good laughs and smiles to all who attend. The event will take place Friday October 5th at the Revere Hotel in Boston.

The distinguished individuals who make up our honored head table include our Commonwealth’s top leader Governor Deval Patrick, our beloved Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino, Boston City Councilors Tito Jackson and Ayanna Pressley, Suffolk County Sheriff Andrea Cabral, as well as Superintendent of the Boston Public Schools Carol R. Johnson.

Boston City councilor Felix G. Arroyo and State Representative Jeffrey Sanchez are charged with the duties of presenting special awards.

Completing the head table we will have Massachusetts State Treasurer, Steven Grossman, and Steward Health Care System Chairman and CEO Dr. Ralph de la Torre.

It’s a star-studded local line-up that is sure to make the event another for the historic books. We will have extensive coverage in our upcoming editions for our readers.

En una ciudad llena de tradiciones, El Mundo Newspaper continúa orgullosamente una nueva que se inició hace dos años y ha crecido hasta alturas inesperadas. En 2010, El Desayuno de la Herencia Hispana buscó convertirse en una tradición anual para la comunidad latina de Nueva Inglaterra, con el mismo espíritu que se celebra el Desayuno del Día de San Patricio y el Desayuno MLK para la rica y diversa comunidad de Nueva Inglaterra. Este año seguimos cumpliendo esa promesa.

A

ccording to a new report by the Pew Hispanic Center, “a record 23.7 million Latinos are eligible to vote in the 2012 presidential election.” This is up by more than four million since 2008, when the figure stood at 19.5 million.

There were nearly 52 million Latinos in the United States in 2011, about 16.7 percent of the nation’s population. But while Hispanics make up the largest minority group in the country, the turnout rate among eligible

Latino voters lags behind that of whites and blacks by significant margins.

For example, a 2009 study found that, “in 2008, just 50% of eligible Latino voters cast ballots, compared with 65% of blacks and 66% of whites.”

And despite continued growth in the Latino population, the number of Latinos who said they are registered to vote dropped by about 600,000 between 2008 and 2010, according to the Census Bureau data cited in the report. Some of that may be due to less enthusiasm in

Another interesting factor is voter displacement. Latinos were hit hard by the foreclosure crisis.

Many moved to different states,

which may have impacted their voter registration. Hispanics are also younger in general -- young people vote less often than their older peers -- and less likely to hold citizenship than other groups.

To top this off, most Latinos live in states that are either solid red like Texas, or solid blue like California. They do, however, stand to play a key role in swing states. Two battleground states, Florida and South Carolina, have already published information that shows an increase in Latino voter registration from 2008.

As the report points out, that may be due to an increase in the Latino populations of both states.

The report also provides a breakdown of Latino voters rarely spelled out in other polls.

“Among Latino eligible voters, 58% are of Mexican origin, 14% are of Puerto Rican origin, 6% are of Cuban origin and 22% are of Central American, South American or other Hispanic origin, according to the Pew Hispanic analysis,” notes the report. “This differs from the overall Hispanic origin distribution of the general U.S. Hispanic population in which some 64% are of Mexican origin, 9% are Puerto Rican and 5% are Cuban origin.”

While Obama is expected to garner about two-thirds of the Latino vote, the number of Latino voters who will actually turnout to vote remains uncertain.

“Latinos for Obama” Mobilize and Refocus Efforts

atino supporters from the Boston area met at the newly opened Vejigantes Restaurant in the South End to organize and refocus efforts to get President Obama re-Elected. City Councilor Felix G. Arroyo, representatives for Obama for America Massachusetts, and numerous community leaders were in attendance.

The Boston based Latino for Obama group that was formed in early April has been active with phone banks, canvassing and other campaign efforts to spread the word about the election, as this latest meeting in the community was an effort to gather more volunteers and also to intensify campaign activity.

means several things including remembering the significance of the moment of when the President was elected.

“Something happen in this country when a man that looks like him [Obama] became President of the United States of America… now people that looked like him could realize what they could be.” Additionally, Arroyo stated that you don’t have to agree with the President on everything in order to vote for him. “I am not voting with the President because I agree with him all the time, but because I agree with his values.”

Carmen Pola, long time activist and the first Latina to run for state rep in the 70’s, said it’s important to do less talking and take more action and asked everyone to act with a sense of urgency.

Republican presidential candidate Gov. Mitt Romney stepped up efforts to woo Latino voters last month (Wednesday, September 20th) in a forum broadcast live online by the Spanish-language Univision network.

Student supporters in the audience at the University of Miami cheered as Romney responded in English to Spanishlanguage questions about immigration, education, health care, jobs and the economy.

“The immigration system, I think we all agree, is broken and it’s been a political football for years and years...and it needs to be fixed,” Romney said.

He criticized U.S. President Barack Obama for pledging to fix the problem, but not delivering.

The GOP challenger seeks to woo Hispanic voters as a Gallup poll conducted partially before and partially after the Republican National Convention at the end of August said Obama leads Romney among Latino registered voters 64%-27%.

Centro Presente, una de las organizaciones pro-inmigrantes de Boston, acaba de lanzar un minidocumental para denunciar la “explotación laboral” a la que son sometidos muchos trabajadores inmigrantes indocumentados.

“Lo que queremos es generar conciencia en la comunidad inmigrante y no inmigrante y hacer llegar este mensaje a todo el país porque hay una explotación del trabajador inmigrante”, dice Patricia Montes, directora ejecutiva de esa organización.

Con el apoyo de líderes y activistas de diferentes organizaciones que se reunieron en Space with a Soul en Boston, Montes expresa que con el documental quieren enviar un mensaje a las autoridades, a la Fiscalía General del Estado y al Departamento de Trabajo para que ayuden a las organizaciones comunitarias que tienen centros laborales a fin de sancionar a los empleadores que violan los derechos de los trabajadores inmigrantes, así como las leyes laborales tanto a nivel estatal como federal.

“Desgraciadamente hay mucha explotación laboral y los trabajadores inmigrantes son muy vulnerables por su condición migratoria, muchos piensan que por su condición migratoria no tienen derechos laborales y eso es un error, porque las leyes laborales tanto a nivel estatal como federal protegen a todos los trabajadores independiente de su condición migratoria”, enfatiza.

Entre los asistentes estuvo Gladys Vega, directora ejecutiva de la Colaborativa de Chelsea, quien se identificó con los trabajadores inmigrantes. Como maestra de ceremonia estuvo Sara Suárez, directora de Noticias Univisión Nueva Inglaterra.

“Yo fui explotado” Marcos Cucuy, de origen guatemalteco, es uno de los miles de inmigrantes que ha sido “explotado” por su empleador. “Desde mayo del 2010 trabajé para una empresa que me hacía trabajar seis días a la semana, de 11:00 de la mañana a 11:00 de la noche, las dos primeras semanas me pagaron 375.00 dólares y luego comenzaron a retrazarse en el pago”, relata.

“No reclamaba por mi condición de indocumentado y lo que quería era trabajar para enviar dinero a mi familia en Guatemala, tengo esposa e hijos a los que mantener”, anota.

Cucuy señala que la empresa le debía dinero por su trabajo y para evitar que se fuera le subieron el salario a 400.00 dólares a la semana por 12 horas de trabajo, seis días a la semana.

Maltratado por su empleador, Cucuy decidió en octubre del año pasado salir del trabajo y le quedaron debiendo varias semanas. “Se quedaron con el dinero de mi trabajo”, subraya.

Boston Latina to lead largest association of Latino professionals in the country This week, ALPFA, the largest association for Latino professionals and students, announced its incoming National board of Directors. Boston’s very own Yvonne Garcia, Senior Vice President at State Street Corporation was elected as ALPFA National President for the 2012-2014 term effective October 1, 2012.

T

he naming of Garcia is significant as, with more than 20,000 members, including CEOs, CFOs and board members, through 40 professional chapters and 100 student chapters in campuses around the nation, the organization has the largest member base and footprint among professional associations for Latinos.

To have a local Latina leading this organization is another reason why Boston’s Latino professional landscape has

quickly become a model for others across the nation.

El Mundo recently had an interesting Q&A with Garcia. Here are her answers:

What is your vision for ALPFA going forward?

I call it “The WHY of ALPFA” - ALPFA’s mission has always been very clear. However, just as importantly, I would like to

explain WHY we exist. We exist to change the reality of today’s world, such as the earning and education gap among Latinos, the scarcity of Latinos/a in top level management positions and

Board Directorships. We exist to build the ALPFA Nation, where a rich partnership between our members, corporate partners and our communities lead to addressing the need for top talent while providing career opportunities to our members and inspiration to our communities.

A big part of my plan is also to implement a new technology strategy as well as exploring international expansion to keep up with the global economy.

What advice would you give to any Latina who is entering the workforce?

In order to you advance in your career you must step outside and look to advancing your community as well. It does not matter if you get the corner office, if your peers or community have no inroads to achieving success. My approach to leadership, delegating, and public speaking was greatly enhanced by the time I volunteered to ALPFA. It is not easy to do, and being a working professional and a mother of two already gives me a full plate, but you will not know your true potential unless you

another successful “Business After Hours” networking event at the Citizens Bank offices (28 State Street, Boston) where State Representative Jeffrey Sanchez addressed those in attendance.

“These events are so important for our community that I have always told the Chamber that they can count on me. I’ll keep

coming as long as they keep inviting me”, said Sanchez.

“Connecting small business owners with elected officials and corporate partners such as bankers is what we are all about and this was a great event for all involved”, stated Nader Acevedo, Chamber President.

En una reunión de coordinación de la celebración del Columbus Day o Día de la Raza que se realizará este domingo 7 en pleno corazón de East Boston, se confirmaba la participación de unas 30 organizaciones y negocios latinos, lo que muestra una mayor presencia de nuestra comunidad en un evento que antes era mayoritariamente italiano.

“Hemos crecido como comunidad y van a participar ademas de las organizaciones y negocios latinos todos los

Consulados latinoamericanos acreditados en Boston”, señala Hernández luego de la reunión a la que asistieron también Luis González, reconocido activista y representante de Inter Group Realty, y Sergio Cannon, quien vive muchos años en East Boston.

La celebración del Columbus Day se ha dividido en cuatro bloques dejando a los latinos para el cierre del desfile multicultural con más música, más grupos, más integrantes y más colorido. “El cierre del desfile será de todo el

grupo latino”, anota Hernández.

“Esta celebración va a ser la más grande en la historia de Massachusetts”.

El grupo de mayor participación latina será el de El Salvador que participará con la Banda de Paz y sus waripoleras, seguida por la mexicana, colombiana, hondureña, peruana, guatemalteca y la brasileña que por primera vez tomará parte del desfile.

El Columbus Day se celebra desde hace más de 20 años alternativamente entre East Boston y el North End. “Lo que empezó como una celebración de los italianos ahora hay una participación de todas las razas”, indica Hernández.

Se ha previsto comenzar el desfile a la 1:00 de la tarde partiendo desde Suffolk Dow hasta Maverick Station. Abrirán

el desfile los veteranos de guerra y los representantes de todos los institutos armados, seguido por los grupos locales de East Boston y luego la colonia italiana para dejar el cierre a los latinos que va a ser la representación más grande.

El alcalde Menino ha pedido la participación de toda la comunidad y se espera una asistencia de entre 90 y 100 mil personas. “Va a ser una celebración muy colorida y bien organizada y es la primera vez que los latinos van a tener una gran representación en coordinación con los Consulados, grupos comunitarios y negocios”, explica Hernández.

Como invitados especiales estarán el gobernador Deval Patrick, el alcalde Thomas Menino, el Concejal de la ciudad de Boston Sal LaMatina y los demás miembros del Concejo de Boston.

Galluccio stays active in the Latino community

F

ormer State Senator and Mayor of Cambridge Anthony Galluccio has always had a soft spot for the Latino community. It is well known that Galluccio has endeared himself to this segment of the population out of a genuine fondness as his attendance, support and dedication to a number of Latino initiatives has outlasted his days in office as he continues to be as active as ever in the Hispanic community of Massachusetts. From attending the Colombian Independence flag raising ceremony to being one of the first to show up in the South End at the opening of the new Puerto Rican restaurant Vejigantes, he just doesn’t stop.

He currently serves on the board of the non-profit Centro Latino in Chelsea, where he is not only an active board member, but a powerful resource for President and CEO Juan Vega who calls Galluccio “a true champion who has a deep understanding of how lifting up Latino and immigrant families can help us achieve better communities for everyone.”

Recently Galluccio spearheaded an effort that brought bring medical equipment to hospitals and clinics in Bonao and Santiago, Dominican Republic after meeting children in cancer ward there over 3 years ago.

Recently El Mundo caught up with Galluccio and had an interesting Q & A. Here are his answers:

What is it that makes you want to stay so involved in the Latino community?

Well, my father - an Italian immigrant - always referred to himself as latin. It’s something about the warm culture and the “latino flavor” in general that serves as a reminder of those traditional values which were very important in my life. New immigrants always remind me of what my family went through and how blessed we are to live in this great country.

What are some of the events or projects in our community that have kept you busy this past summer?

My schedule has not changed much. From flag raisings, parades to business openings and charity events, Latinos never really saw a difference when I left office. They kept looking at me as a community

leader. I was grateful and humbled so I just kept showing up. I even got a chance to sing “Paz en la tormenta” to my friend Hector “El Torito” Acosta backstage at Fenway Park last year. That’s a song that I adore and helped sustain me during difficult times.

How do you describe the Latino community to your nonLatino colleagues and friends?

“Yo soy latino is what I always say (I am Latino). I honestly think at this point I am part of this community and not an outsider.

My Spanish has gotten a lot better

- I even swear now in Spanish when I get mad – and my bachata dancing is legendary!

How are you enjoying your life as a private citizen, working at your law office in Cambridge?

I loved public service and I am humbled that people still see me as a community leader. I still get calls every day from people in crisis looking for help. I never say I am no longer an elected official. I just do my best to help. In the end taking votes is a small part of the job as an elected official. The fun part is inspiring the community to work together, erasing differences and fighting for the underdog.

I am fortunate to still be able to play that role as a youth sports coach, board member on non- profits, as an attorney and activist. I guess it’s also been fun to show people I am not going anywhere and that what drives me is people and NOT just votes or elections.

------------------------------------Gallucio currently is a partner in Galluccio & Watson law firm in Cambridge and serves on a number of non- profit boards that support a range of services from ESL, public health, affordable housing and youth sports. He also coaches 7 to 14 year olds in youth baseball and football and remains very active as a civic and community activist.

Everett, una de las ciudades con una gran diversidad de habitantes, entre latinos, italianos y afroamericanos, celebró el Mes de la Herencia Hispana con una gran participación de la comunidad que desafiando el clima bailó y gozo de un espectáculo al aire libre en el que participaron artistas locales de las diferentes culturas.

Los mariachis “Mi México Lindo” fue una de las atracciones de una gran celebración que tuvo también al payaso Renato haciendo reír a la gente con sus chistes y bromas y a El Primo Simón, uno de los artistas locales salvadoreños que se llevó los aplausos del público.

Para la celebración del Mes de la Hispanidad, la ciudad de Everett levantó una gran tarima en plena Brodway, entre dos negocios latinoamericanos como Cancún Restaurant y Los Tres Gatos Lounge Restaurant

próximo a inaugurarse, y cerró el tránsito en la Norwood Street para darle paso a negocios y diversas organizaciones a que tomen contacto con el público.

La Comunidad Inc., una de las organizaciones pro-inmigrantes que tiene sus oficinas en Everett, estuvo presente registrando votantes para las próximas elecciones presidenciales. El abogado Roland Hughes que presta un valioso apoyo a la comunidad de Everett y de otras ciudades estuvo entre los asistentes.

“Los latinos nos estamos haciendo sentir cada vez más, somos una comunidad en crecimiento y la celebración de la Herencia Hispana en una comunidad tan diversa como Everett es una muestra de nuestra presencia en esta ciudad”, dice Antonio Amaya, director ejecutivo de la Comunidad Inc. La presencia latina fue notable y no le importó el clima ni las amenazas de lluvia, la gente gozó del gran espectáculo y bailó en las calles al ritmo de la música que le tocaban. “Hoy es un día de celebración”, anota Amaya.

El alcalde de la ciudad Carlo de María estuvo presente visitando negocios y tomando contacto con las organizaciones que hacen rica a esta ciudad. “Esta es una ciudad con una gran diversidad entre latinos, italianos y afroamericanos que se unen para celebrar la Herencia Hispana”, señala el activista latino.

Amaya y otros miembros de su organización estuvieron registrando votantes, animando a la gente para que salga a votar en las elecciones presidenciales del 6 de noviembre. “Es importante salir a votar para que nos cuenten”, anota.

esde hace una década en la ciudad de Lawrence cada 26 de septiembre se realiza una marcha donde mujeres vestidas de novias, sin llevar en sus rostros la sonrisa característica de toda mujer que contrae matrimonio, caminan en silencio, con la mirada perdida como buscando respuesta al porqué existe el flagelo de la violencia doméstica. La marcha en homenaje a la vida de Gladys Ricart, una mujer de origen dominicano que fue asesinada el 26 de septiembre del 1999 en New Jersey, el día de su boda.

Ricart perdió la vida de manos del hombre con quien mantuvo una relación por varios años.

Como ha ocurrido desde hace 10 años la organización Delamano, junto a la YWCA, la Unidad especial a Beneficio de la Salud de la Mujer de la alcaldía de Lawrence, realizan la ya tradicional: “Marcha de las Novias” en un esfuerzo no sólo por recordar el vil asesinato de Ricart y demás víctimas, sino para llevar un mensaje de educación y de concienciación en relación al rol que nos debe tocar como miembros de una sociedad que cada día se ve manchada por el maltrato, el atropello, las humillaciones, las lágrimas, el dolor, la sangre y en el peor de los casos la muerte.

Este año 19 personas han muerto en Massachusetts a causa de la violencia doméstica.

La marcha que se llevó a cabo el pasado miércoles 26 de septiembre, partió de la plaza de la ruta 114. En la misma participaron decenas de mujeres vestidas de novias, y hombres de negro, partieron revestidos de solemnidad hasta el Lawrence Senior Center, 155 calle Haverhill, donde hubo una Vigilia. Allí se leyeron los nombres de las víctimas y fue encendida una vela por cada una de ellas.

Acto seguido el Sacerdote Joel Almonó de la Iglesia Episcopal de Gracia hizo una oración en recordación a las víctimas.

Entre los oficiales electos presentes en la marcha estuvieron: el alcalde William Lantigua, el Representante Estatal Marcos Devers, el presidente del Concejo Municipal Frank Moran y los Concejales Dan Rivera, Kendrys Vásquez y Estela Nuñez, entre otros.

Luis Martinez y Joshua Alba dirigen el Juramento del Lazo Blanco, hecho por 20 hombres que participaron en la marcha, en dicho juramento se comprometen a ser parte de la solución de la violencia contra las mujeres.

NOTICE TO BIDDERS Sealed bids for MBTA Contract No. B00CN01, RECONSTRUCTION OF ASHMONT RED LINE BRIDGE OVER CLAYTON STREET, BRIDGE NO. B-16-138 (A39) MP 157.00, BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS ( CLASS 1GENERAL TRANSIT CONSTRUCTION and CLASS 4A-BRIDGE, PROJECT VALUE - $8,687,000.00, will be received by the Director of Contract Administration at the Contract Administration Office, 6th Floor, Room 6720, Transportation Building, 10 Park Plaza, Boston, Massachusetts, 02116-3975, until two o’clock (2:00 p.m.) on October 30, 2012. Immediately thereafter, in a designated room, the Bids will be opened and read publicly.

Work consists of: Removal of existing bridge superstructure and piers, modifications to existing abutments, construction of new superstructure, and all incidentals. Work includes but is not limited to 1. Systems Relocation. Install temporary crossing for relocation of the MBTA system conduits. Install and connecting systems cables through the new bridge 2. Abutment Tiebacks. Install total of 8 abutment tiebacks for existing abutments - 2 rigs concurrently 3. Abutment Micropiles. Remove of temporary crossing for systems relocation and sidewalk restoration This Contract is subject to a financial assistance Contract between the MBTA and the Federal Transit Administration of U.S. Department of Transportation. FTA Participation 80 percent.

Each prospective bidder proposing to bid on this project must be prequalified in accordance with the Authority’s “Procedures Governing Classification and Rating of Prospective Bidders.” Copies may be obtained from the Contract Administration Office at the above address. Requests for prequalification for this Project will not be accepted by the Authority after the tenth (10th) day preceding the date set for the opening of bids.

Prequalified bidders may obtain from the Contract Administration Office a “Request for Bid Form” which must be properly filled out and submitted for approval.

Bidding documents may be obtained from the Contract Administration Office at the address above from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., beginning September 28, 2012, Monday through Friday, at no charge. Copies of the Bidding Documents will be available in electronic format (CD). Contract Specifications shall be available in portable data file (.pdf) format and Contract Drawings shall be available in Tagged Image File (.tif) format. If requested, Bidding documents will be shipped for a fee of $25.00, made payable by check to MBTA. For overnight mail service, a completed mailing label, with an approved carrier account number (i.e. Federal Express), must be included.

All bidding documents requested by check will be shipped via U.S. Postal Service.

NONE OF THESE CHARGES ARE REFUNDABLE. Bidders attention is directed to Appendix 1, Notice of Requirement for Affirmative Action to Insure Equal Employment Opportunity; and to Appendix 2, Supplemental Equal Employment Opportunity, Anti-Discrimination, and Affirmative Action Program in the specifications. In addition, pursuant to the requirements of Appendix 3, Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) Participation Provision, Bidders must submit an assurance with their Bids that they will make sufficient and reasonable efforts to meet the stated DBE goal of __17__percent Bidders will affirmatively ensure that in regard to any contract entered into pursuant to this solicitation, minority and female construction contractors will be afforded full opportunity to submit Bids and will not be discriminated against on the grounds of race, color, religion, sex, age, or national origin in consideration for an award.

The Authority will conduct an inspection tour of the site on October 9, 2012. A prebid conference will be held on October 10, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at the Project Manager, Mr. Ken Lim, P.E., 500 Arborway, Jamaica Plain, MA 02130, Telephone number 617.222.4487. Any request for interpretation of the Plans and Specifications should be submitted in writing at the same time.

Bidders will be required to certify as part of their bids that they are able to furnish labor that can work in harmony with all other elements of labor employed or to be employed on the work.

This Contract is subject to Federal wage and hourly laws and minimum State wage rates as well as all other applicable labor laws.

Bidders are advised that the “Buy America” provisions of the Surface Transportation Assistance Act of 1982 (Pub. L-97-424) as amended, apply to any Contract, procurement or agreement which results from this solicitation.

Bid Guaranty shall consist of a bid deposit in the amount of five (5) percent of the value of the bid, in the form of a bid bond, cash, certified check, treasurer’s or cashier’s check.

The successful Bidder shall be required to furnish a Performance Bond and a Labor and Materials Payment Bond each for the full amount of the Contract price.

The Authority reserves the right to reject any or all Bids, to waive informalities, to advertise for new Bids or proceed to do the work otherwise, as may be deemed to be in the best interests of the Authority.
