Welcome to the pinnacle of summer! This month brings the nostalgia of summers bruised from Slip ’N Slide playtime, drying off on the driveway, beach towel spread out, pushing the last of the sugary frozen juice from plastic tubes. Bike rides, carnivals, boat trips, all magical. As an adult, I love the barbecues, long days, swimming with my kids, and yet … there comes a wave of dread. You see, I have a special gift. In a mass of other humans, with layer upon layer of repellent on my skin, I attract any stinging insect in a one-mile radius. In high school, a girlfriend invited a couple of us to come with her and her family to their cabin on the lake in the Adirondacks. It was a treat. We spent days in the boat or on the shoreline listening to Whitney Houston and Breathe cassettes. We ate everything off the grill and stayed up late gossiping in the bunk room. And we hiked, something I loved to do until that summer. It was a slow build, first a slight buzzing around me, ending with a cloud of these horrid creatures swarming as I walked. My friends watched me bewildered as I ran, windmilling my arms, back to the cabin. And it didn’t change as I aged. Today I do my best to keep dryer sheets in my pockets, Avon’s Skin So Soft in handy bottles, and OFF! in spray, wipe, candle, or wristband form so I can actually enjoy the summer evenings without random itching and swelling. Worst case scenario, I spend my Fourth of July in the pool watching for random fireworks, which is still not a bad way to celebrate. Here’s to wishing you a pest-free, sticky but amazing July! Best Wishes,
Nicole Soulsby, Editor

A Mountain High Enough
Cher Lessard instructs us on mountain pose to keep us mindful this summer. Mountain Pose (tadasana) is full of power, symmetry, and stability. What seems like a simple stance from the outside actually engages your body and mind when you lean into the posture. Here’s how to do it: • Stand on your mat, feet hip-width apart, toes facing forward, with your arms at your sides, hands facing your body. • Lift your toes off the mat and spread them wide, returning them one by one back to the mat. Press all the corners of your feet into the mat. • Stack knees over ankles, hips over knees, and shoulders over hips. Engage your thighs, lifting your knee caps. • Elongate the top of your head toward the ceiling and tuck your chin slightly. Bring your shoulder blades back and down away from your ears, (like you are pinching an apple between your shoulder blades). • Spread your fingers and reach toward the mat. • Focus on a stationary object at eye level. Breathe deeply. Imagine you are a mountain and embody all of the mountain’s qualities.

Watch
Mare of Easttown on HBOMax is exceptional. Kate Winslet heads up an excellent cast in this murder mystery that leaves you guessing until the end. The story centers around Mare Sheehan, a detective in a small Pennsylvania town who investigates a murder. Through the investigation, the show examines the community and how family relationships and the past can influence the present. Lauren Powers may be crazy about her husband, kids, and puppies, but she is also passionate about many charitable causes, including pet rescue and education.

Read
I’m hooked on books by Charles Martin. His writing style brings each environment to life. I like that his endings always have a surprise twist. He tackles and addresses social issues, health issues, and human trafficking issues and gently reminds the reader that no one is exempt. I absolutely fell in love with When Crickets Cry, a gutwrenching story that still provided avenues for love and lasting hope in mankind. Right now I am reading The Letter Keeper. Try one of his books—I have loved all of them. A new member of the ARB, Kay Black has a deep love of education, reading, and her family—most of all her adorable granddaughter.
Listen
SmartLess with Jason Bateman is hilarious! And we are also huge Ozark fans if you’re looking for a great show. You can usually hear us jamming out on the golf cart to Pepper, Irration, Slightly Stoopid, and any other fun beach music. Between her kids, husband, and real estate job, you might only see Kaitlin LaMacchia in a blur as she cruises by in her golf cart.

my name is Marley. I’m a 13-year-old Mi-Ki and a very smol, handsome boy. At my age, I enjoy the simple things, like going to bed at exactly 10 p.m. and expecting my humans, John and Beckie, to go to bed with me. I love humans, and not just my humans. I was a certified therapy dog for seven years with Canine Crusaders. I visited a local nursing home every week and loved making everyone smile.

Lived here, working various jobs, for eight years. But, I wanted to be closer to my family, so I moved back home. I dated other people, nothing too serious. Then I met Sal.”
A Bag of Ice
That first meeting happened by chance. “I was hanging out in The Hamptons,” Sal remembers, “having a great time. And I got invited to a party I didn’t really want to go to. I went anyway, and stopped off at a 7-11 to pick up a bag of ice. Then a Cadillac drives up and parks.” “It wasn’t my Cadillac,” Carol laughs. “These two girls get out of the car and come in. According to Sal, “For as long as I can remember, I was always mechanically inclined. One of my favorite things to do as a kid was to take things apart. Sometimes I’d even put them back together. Sometimes not. “I was a kid the first time I ever went to an airport. My dad took me to LaGuardia and I got to see an airplane up close. Wow! I wanted to fly one, take one apart, and see how it worked. Whatever the future held for me, I knew I wanted it to have airplanes in it.”
THE POINTE JULY 2021 EDITION
But it would be a few years before Sal got his wish. He had a lot of tinkering to do before airplanes would become his reality. “Cars, we were all about cars. It was the time for it back then. We’d hot rod them, race our cars before classes got started in high school. Motorcycles were also a lot of fun.” For Carol, an affinity for Florida also took root at a young age. “From early on, even as a girl,” Carol says, “I’ve always had an attachment to Florida. When I was young, I took a trip with my grandmother. We

went to a recruiting office to enlist in the Marines. “The recruiter was an hour and a half late,” he recalls. “After I waited long enough to get mad, I jumped up to leave and ran right into the Air Force recruiter just coming in. He convinced me to join the Air Force, and I did. That’s where I learned to work on airplanes. The Air Force gave me all the aircraft experience I could ask for. He worked on transit maintenance. “Anything that dropped out of the sky, we fixed,” he says. Sal was posted to Pensacola for a while. Then, in 1972, I flew on a B-52 G to Guam so we could bomb the North Vietnamese. I went to Vietnam and worked on F-14s, then C123Ks with the 19th Tactical Airlift Squadron. My first day there, the sergeant showed me a messed up bushing. He said—‘I want you to file that flush.’ I did, but it took me hours. It was her, one of the girls from the Cadillac.” “Was I interested in him?” Carol chuckles. “No, not really. He was a little too, I don’t know, how do I say it—?” “She thought I was crazy.” “That’s it. Well, I mean, he rode motorcycles!” “I also skydived. Did a lot of skiing.” “But, he did drive an old 70s Bronco. And I kind of liked old cars. So, he called me a few times.” “I called her, yeah. But she kept saying no. But I’m pretty persistent. I figured I’d try one more time.” “So, I finally said, ‘Okay, okay.’ ... And that was that.”
you’re putting things together. For me, my lifelong passion has been to work on airplanes, cars, motorcycles, whatever. I like fitting all the pieces and parts, making them work, cleaning them up like new. I like most all of it, except the newer cars not so much, all that plastic and computer garbage.” Both Sal’s and Carol’s families have a long history of service in the military. “Could be one of the things that drew me to him,” Carol says. Longtime Central Florida residents Amanda and Micah Carter and Amanda’s parents, Joe and Leticia Saavedra have moved into LCP together as a multigenerational household. The move is partly to make it easier for each family to travel. “We were so excited to find this home that accommodates us both comfortably,” says Amanda. The Carters have a young family
of their own, including the newest member of the family, 1-monthold Ava. “This year has reminded us that life is so precious,” says Amanda. “We’re making the most of each day while surrounded with the ones we love.” If you want to welcome this blended family to LCP, just stop by and bring the kids—they’re always looking for new families to befriend!

Matt and Lisa Bergin are new to Lake Cove Pointe, but not to Winter Garden, having lived near downtown, and in the general Orlando area, since 2015. Originally from upstate New York and Southern California, respectively, they eventually migrated to
Florida to escape the brutal New England winters. They chose this neighborhood for them and their four children because they loved the beauty and friendliness of the community. They’re lovers of the arts, the outdoors, movie nights, and drive-
way parties. The family has many home improvement projects on the horizon, but are most excited about building a pool. If you want to meet the Bergins and make them feel at home, the best way to do it is to simply stop by and visit!

THE POINTE JULY 2021 EDITION
Things are warming up in the Sorenson home, with cosmetic updates to their living room and dining room, bringing style and sophistication to the open space. For the family room renovation, the Sorensons wanted to remove the carpet, but didn’t want to match it with mismatched tile. So, they began searching for where the existing tile was manufactured in order to replicate it. “We were able to find the tile in Texas,” says Allison Sorenson. “It matched perfectly, but was two inches shorter than the original. So we did a border and laid it in a brick pattern. You can’t even tell
Bobby and Allison Sorenson with their 3-year-old daughter, Stella where it starts and ends!” They then added crown molding, a fresh coat of light neutral paint, and a shiplap wall of nine-inch planks. The dining room also received a new coat of paint and crown molding, as well as a new light fixture and sheer neutral curtains. A new dining set with a simple silhouette and light wood
helps brighten the room more than the original deep-colored set. The greatest new feature, though, was removing the chair rail and replacing it with five-foot wainscoting. “Our biggest design change was to make everything light and bright when you walk in,” says Allison. With the primary indoor entertaining spaces done and wrapped in a bow, the Sorensons have now set their sights on their outdoor space. “Our next plan is turning the backyard into an outdoor oasis for entertaining and swimming,” says Allison. “We can't wait to get the project started!”
HOT GARDENING
Tips for keeping things green this summer. Tip #1: Check your irrigation systems for clogged or misaligned heads. We mentioned it last summer because of the lack of rain; we’re mentioning it now because two or three days in the high 90s without rain can cause severe stress to lawns and landscapes. This spring put a strain on many landscapes due to irrigation issues. Tip #2: Fertilize carefully. Orange County has fertilizer restrictions through September, but that doesn’t mean you or your lawn can’t fertilize if you need to, so long as you’re in compliance with the State of Florida’s Green Industry Best Management Practices. We recommend taking the Orange County Fertilizer Application Education Course online.
Tip #3: Save the heavy trimming for fall. The summer sun can cause serious injury to previously shaded plant parts. Planting new plants or stepping up potted plants is fine. Tip #4: Check on your veggies. New gardeners especially can be frustrated by planting the wrong crops here in the summer—especially tomatoes, which will not set fruit if nighttime temperatures are above 70ºF. Wes & Vickie Parrish The Parrishes know their landscaping, and have spent years studying the science of horticulture, and previously owned their own nursery. Wes frequently travels around Florida to give seminars about his passion and knowledge.

The
Sc p! Celebrate National Ice Cream Month with a Scoop—and do it right. Story: Rheya Tanner
When I was kid, I was always so excited when the Lake County fair was in town. I’d beg my dad to take me for the day and play the games, see the animals, ride the rides, and enjoy a mountain of cotton candy to top it all off. Just kidding. I hated the fair. I was a 2000s kid—not exactly a peak time for fairs—and the half-dozen theme parks within driving distance made it seem downright boring by comparison. I don’t really care for cotton candy, either. But I do love cotton candy ice cream. In fact, it’s probably my most favorite ice cream flavor. It’s everything regular cotton candy aspires to be, with far more substance and a far better texture. Plus, the cold really adds something special, really brings out the subtle sugary tanginess in a way your traditional cotton candy can’t hold a candle to. (It would catch fire if it tried.) But because it’s not a particu-

larly popular flavor—and because I’m an “adult” on a “diet” and can no longer justify eating so many dessert-flavored desserts—it’s gotten harder for me to get my carnival-spun fairy floss fix. Lucky for me, then, that there’s a fantastic local ice cream shop where I can get my hands on a crisp waffle cone stacked skyscraper-high with two scoops of the stuff. A staple of Winter Garden, Scoops has been around forever. What better place to get two summer staples rolled into one generous ice cream scooper? The shop also serves at least a dozen other flavors, from the most vanilla to the wackiest novelty flavors like “Superman,” and “Lil’ Blue Panda.” If you’ve never tried cotton candy, though, and it wouldn’t surprise me you haven’t, I recommend giving it a scoop this summer. In my completely unbiased opinion, not only is
July the absolute best time for ice cream—especially with it being National Ice Cream Month—it's also the most indulgent way to support a small business. Fair warning, though; you're gonna want to ask for extra napkins. Despite it being the best time for ice cream, July is also the drippiest time for ice cream. It was stormy and overcast the day I scooped up my cone, but it was still a race against the clock to keep the runoff from ruining my shirt. Another tip: don’t wear a white shirt on a day you’re going out for ice cream. Learn from my mistakes. Get just one scoop, rather than my impulsive and wildly irresponsible two, and maybe opt for a bowl if you’re not hankering for a cone, to keep a sticky deluge from coating your hands for the rest of the day. But hey, if you’re feeling impulsive and wildly irresponsible? Go for it—and good luck.

Add some sparkle to your summer with these sunny samples. J E F F A N D TA R I N ’ S J U LY S E L E C T I O N S
Summertime is here and you’re likely taking advantage of all the incredible outdoor recreations Florida has to offer. Whether you are out on the water or picnicking outside with your family, spice up your day and stay hydrated with these refreshing wines! Aveleda Vinho Verde could basically be described as a pinot grigio on steroids. Hailing from Portugal, it’s like a lemon lime Sweet Tart with a spritz—clean, crisp, and effervescent. Grab a few on your way to Crystal River for scalloping and let this bargain wine shine. Our favorite kind of Rosé is French. Figuière Mediterranean Rosé is full of melons and berries with a floral bouquet and briny minerality. Imagine it paired with a grilled watermelon salad with Cape Canaveral Rock Shrimp and feta cheese. Dr. Loosen Riesling is a true gem. With its zingy acidity of ripe Granny smith apples and lemon zest, and sharp minerality from the Mosel Valley—it’s the perfect wine for anything from foie gras to sushi. Grab a bottle and a couple of $5 sushi rolls to enjoy on your back porch, extra wasabi.
