Hace pocos meses era difícil hablar del Puerto de Mahón sin menospreciar su gestión, su diseño comercial, estructura urbanística o su ‘desconocido’ de plan de usos. Desde Empatic queríamos cambiar una dinámica cargada de crítica estéril encaminada a la autodestrucción. El cambio debía generarse desde el convencimiento de que tenemos entre manos un diamante en bruto y no un vil pedazo de tiznoso carbón. Desde PORTUM hemos aportado datos que hablan de esperanza. Con satisfacción hemos visto como desde hace un par de meses el Puerto se ha convertido en el foco de un debate obligado. Al fin, los principales medios de comunicación de Menorca, la administración, pero sobre todo la ciudadanía creen en el Puerto, hablan de él y sueñan con verlo crecer como elemento indispensable para que Menorca evolucione económica y socialmente. Algunos no lo creen aún, pero todo este trabajo es mucho más importante de lo que piensan. Nos queda el orgullo de que Empatic tuvo fe en el Puerto de Mahón, tanta que acometimos un proyecto de locos, crear PORTUM, una revista en papel específica para la rada y que ha cumplido su objetivo al revertir un discurso pesimista por otro cargado de esperanza. Gracias a ustedes por su excepcional acogida. Nos marchamos para volver en 2015 con más ímpetu y con ideas nuevas que aporten más valor al Puerto de Mahón. Hasta pronto.

A few months ago it was difficult to speak about Port Mahon without underestimating its management, commercial design, urban layout or its ‘unknown’ plan for its uses. At Empatic, we wanted to change its dynamic which was full of sterile criticism aimed at its destruction. This change had to be generated from the conviction that we were dealing with a diamond in the rough and not a vile piece of sooty coal. Through Portum we have provided data that speaks of hope.

We have satisfactorily seen, how the Port in only a couple of months, has become the centre of a forced debate. At last, the mainstream media of Minorca, the administration, but especially the public believe in the harbour, they talk about it and dream of seeing it grow as an essential element for Minorca’s economic and social evolution. Some do not believe it yet, but all this work is much more important than what one thinks. We still take pride in that Empatic has faith in Port Mahon, so much that we undertook such an insane project by creating Portum, a printed magazine, exclusively representing the harbour and has served its purpose to reverse a pessimistic discourse by another full of hope. Thank you for your exceptional hospitality.

We leave you now and will return in 2015 with more impetus and new ideas that will bring more value to Port Mahon. See you soon!

Gabriel García Márquez: Gabriel García Márquez (Aracataca, 6 marzo 1927 – México DF, 17 abril 2014), brillante escritor y periodista colombiano. En 1982 recibió el Premio Nobel de Literatura. Su obra más conocida, la novela Cien años de soledad, considerada por la RAE como uno de los grandes clásicos hispánicos de todos los tiempos. Esta frase la recogió la periodista Mercedes Milà en un artículo publicado en el Diario Menorca tras el fallecimiento de ‘Gabo’.

La dijo en la terraza de la casa del tío de la periodista en el Puerto de Mahón, Alfonso Milà, durante la única visita el genial escritor a Menorca.

Gabriel García Márquez (Aracataca, 6 March 1927 – Mexico D.F., 17 April 2014 ), brilliant writer and Colombian journalist. In 1982 he received the Nobel Prize for Literature. The novel One Hundred Years of Solitude (Spanish: Cien años de soledad) considered by the ‘Royal Spanish Academy of Language’ as one of the great classics of all Hispanic times. This quote was collected by the journalist Mercedes Milà in an article published in the Newspaper, Diario Menorca on the death of ‘Gabo’. He said it while on the terrace of the journalist’s uncle’s house at Port Mahon, of Alfonso Milà, during the only visit the brilliant writer made to Minorca.

30 MILLION TO BE INVESTED IN THE PORT El Puerto de Mahón recibirá entre este año y el 2018 una inversión directa de 30 millones de euros por parte de Autoridad Portuaria que cambiarán la operativa actual y adaptarán el espacio a las necesidades del futuro. El grueso del presupuesto se lo llevará la nueva estación marítima del Cós Nou, que entrará en funcionamiento en 2016 y costará entre 7 y 9 millones de euros. El edificio tendrá 2.000 metros cuadrados repartidos en dos plantas y aparte se urbanizará la zona para los viales de acceso, zonas de aparcamiento y pre-embarque, sitios para coches de alquiler, etc.

Port Mahon will receive between this year and 2018 a direct investment of 30 million euros from the Port Authority that will change current operations and will adapt the space for future needs. The majority of the budget will be used for the new Maritime Station of Cós Nou, which will become operational in 2016 and will cost between 7 and 9 million euros. Para acceder a la futura estación se está abriendo un vial ahora mismo de 320 metros con un presupuesto de 2,7 millones. También se prevé ampliar la calzada entre el inicio de la carretera de La Mola y el punto de acceso a dicho vial, además de construir una rotonda.

Hasta que la nueva estación no está lista, se habilitará una estación marítima para el pasaje de línea regular en el Cós Nou que operará ya a partir de la temporada que viene.

Por su parte, la actual estación marítima se destinará a zona de recepción de cruceristas y otros usos como exposiciones, sala conferencias o presentaciones de regatas. Autoridad Portuaria prevé igualmente invertir una partida para mejorar la cobertura WIFI de este edificio y que los cruceristas tengan un mejor servicio. Y con la intención de que puedan atracar cruceros más grandes o dar cabida a hasta tres barcos a la vez, se eliminará el tacón de descarga actual del Muelle de Pasajeros, de forma que se quedará una línea libre de atraque de 620 metros. Esta obra se licita en septiembre y estará lista en abril del 2015. A la vez, se construirá un nuevo tacón de descarga ro-ro delante de la zona de Xoriguer para que atraquen los barcos de carga que eventualmente no puedan entrar en el puerto de Ciutadella debido al mal tiempo.

To access the future station, a 320 metre long road is being built that has a budget for 2.7 million. There are also plans to expand the road between its beginning at La Mola and the point of access to that road, in addition to building a roundabout. In the meantime, until it is finished, a maritime station for the passage of regular service liners at Cós Nou will be set up and will already be operational at the beginning of next season. Meanwhile, the current passenger terminal will be destined to receive cruise liners, and for other uses such as an exhibition space, conference room or presentations for regattas. The Port Authority also plans to invest a part of the funds to improve the building’s WIFI coverage and to better the service for the cruise liners. Also, while having in mind the ideal outcome of their goals, which are being able to berth larger cruise ships and to accommodate up to three ships at a time, all involve the removal of the current passenger ramp in the quay which will free up a mooring line of 620 metres. This work will be tendered in September to be ready in April 2015. At the same time, a new ro-ro unloading-launch ramp will be built in front of the Xoriguer area to berth cargo ships that occasionally may not be able to enter Port Ciutadella due to bad weather.

Esta fue la orden del Rey Alfonso III tras la conquista de Menorca en 1287. Antes la ciudad se reducía a la existencia de un castillo, hoy ya desaparecido, y unas cuantas casas al abrigo en un pequeño recinto amurallado. Poco o nada se sabe del castillo ubicado en lo que hoy es la Plaza de la Conquista, salvo

“The Lord King commands that Port Mahon builds a well-walled town.” This was the order of King Alfonso III after the conquest of Minorca in 1287. Before the city was reduced to the existence of a castle, now gone, and a few houses sheltered in a small walled enclosure. Little or nothing is known of the castle located in what is now the Plaza de la Conquista, except some vestiges like a

algún vestigio como un trozo de pared que atraviesa del Ayuntamiento y la torre de defensa que se encuentra en el convento de las Concepcionistas, según relata Josep Maria Quintana en su libro ‘Maó’. La muralla del castillo tenía 6 metros de altura por 3 de ancho en su base y 1’5 metros en su parte más alta, con dos puertas, el Pont de l’Àngel y el Portal, con foso y puente levadizo. Alfonso III ordena construir una villa amurallada para protegerla de aquellos que ansiaban su Puerto. La nueva muralla estaba construida de piedra y mortero. Tenía una altura de 8 metros y 1’5 de ancho. Se cree que extramuros existía un foso, e intramuros, pegado a la muralla, se extendía un camino de ronda por toda la ciudad. Pero tras la construcción de San Felipe en el siglo XVI, las murallas como defensa fueron abandonándose. Defender la ciudad desde un moderno fuerte o castillo en la bocana del Puerto era más seguro que hacerlo a pies de la villa.

The castle wall was 6 metres high by 3 metres wide at its base and 1.5 metres at its highest point, with two doors, the Pont de l’Angel and the Portal, with a moat and drawbridge. Alfonso III ordered the walled town to be built to protect it from those who craved its harbour.

The new rampart was constructed of stone and mortar.

It was 8 metres high and 1.5 metres wide. It is believed that there was a moat outside and inside the walls, running along the wall, as it stretched a path around the whole city. But after the construction of St. Phillip in the 16th century, the walls were abandoned as a defence structure. Defending the city from a modern fortress or castle at the mouth of the port was safer than at the foot of the town. Times were changing.

Entrance to the castle. In 1731, Kane installed a clock that he brought from London. It was destroyed in 1788 in order to build the façade of the City Hall and the sacristy of Santa María.

It was built last (end of 16th century), to strengthen the wall after the sacking of Redbeard. It consists of a great platform for artillery, it was destroyed in 1930 to build Plaza Bastion.

Communicated between the castel and Baixamar (foreshore). It was made up of a series of arches with an upper chamber and was located in the old street, Pont des Castell. The portal was demolished in 1783.

Opened in 1722 by Kane to communicate the town with Ses Moreres, next to a medieval tower (called l’Esperó). It was demolished in 1784 and the tower in 1870 to broaden the street, Hannover.

3. BASTIÓ DES MIRADOR: Construido en el siglo XVI tras el asalto de Barbarroja para de ubicar la artillería. Ha llegado hasta hoy, convertido en un jardines. El pasaje abovedado de la calle Alfons III fue construido en 1728.

Built in the 16th century after Redbeard assaulted the city, to dispose the artillery. It remains today, transformed into gardens. The archway Alfonso III was built in 1728.

Punished in 1535 by Redbeard’s artillery, now in its place stands the Teatro Principal (1829). A round tower was erected attached by two curtain walls.

4. PORTAL DE SANT CRISTÓFOL: Por éste entró Barbarroja en 1535, pero no fue rehecho hasta 1674 y sirvió para conectar el barrio que se creó extramuros en el pla des Monestir, en lo que hoy es Sant Francesc.

9. PORTAL DE S’ARRAVALETA: En pie hasta finales del XVIII. La torre oriental se demolió en 1814 para ensanchar la calle junto a Pont de l’Àngel, construido sobre el callejón de ronda de la muralla. En el XVIII fue prisión.

This is where Redbeard entered in 1535, but was not rebuilt until 1674 and was used to connect the borough that was created by the extramural in the pla des Monestir, in what today is Sant Francesc (St. Francis).

Standing only until the late 18th century. The eastern tower was demolished in 1814 to widen the street next to Pont de l’Angel, built above the alley round the wall. In the 18th century it was a prison.

TROFEO PANERAI LA REGATA DE LAS JOYAS

‘TROFEO PANERAI’THE REGATTA OF THE SEAFARING GEMS

El Puerto de Mahón se volcó a finales de agosto en la celebración de la XI Copa del Rey de Clásicos y Barcos de Época - Trofeo Panerai, uno de los mayores espectáculos náuticos de España. Hasta 46 embarcaciones clásicas y de época de los siglos XIX y XX llegaron a Menorca procedentes de países como España, Bélgica, Francia, Irlanda, Italia, Mónaco y Reino Unido para participar en la prueba, que puntuaba en el prestigioso circuito internacional Panerai Yacht Challenge.

A partir del día 26 empezaron los preparativos y actos previos, entre ellos una jornada solidaria de navegación a bordo del velero de 1936 Eilean para la asociación de niños con cáncer Aspanob, y luego entre el 28 y el 30 se celebraron las carreras. La regata permitió contemplar la belleza de auténticas joyas de la navegación y barcos con tanta historia como el Moonbeam IV, en el que Rainiero de Mónaco y Grace Kelly pasaron

Port Mahon threw itself into the celebration of the XI Copa del Rey de Clásicos y Barcos de Época - Trofeo Panerai, of the one of the largest nautical shows in Spain, late August.

Up to 46 classic and vintage vessels from the 19th and 20th centuries, came to Minorca from countries like Spain, Belgium, France, Ireland, Italy, Monaco and the United Kingdom to participate in the competition, which were scored in the prestigious international circuit Panerai Yacht Challenge.Starting on 26th were the preparations and preliminary acts, including a solidarity day of sailing on board the yacht Eilean from 1936 for the association of children with cancer, Aspanob, and then from 28th to 30th the races were held.

The race allowed the beauty to be contemplated of the authentic, seafaring gems and vessels with so much history like the Moonbeam IV, where Rainier of Monaco and Grace Kelly spent their honeymoon, the Marigold, built in 1862, or Manitou, famous for having belonged to the American President, John Fitzgerald Kennedy.

La prestigiosa competición, organizada por el Club Marítimo de Mahón y el Real Club Náutico de Barcelona, ha concentrado a más de 500 participantes y ha contribuido a posicionar Mahón como uno de los puertos de regatas más importantes del Mediterráneo occidental. De hecho, además de la Panerai en agosto, para el año que viene se ha confirmado una nueva edición de la igualmente prestigiosa regata Menorca Maxi, que tendrá lugar en el mes de mayo aunque la fecha exacta está por determinar según el tipo de barcos que acompañen a los Wally.

The prestigious competition, organized by the Club Marítimo de Mahón and the Real Club Nautico de Barcelona, has narrowed it down to over 500 participants and has helped position Mahon as one of the most important ports for regattas in the Western Mediterranean. In fact, besides the Panerai in August, a new edition of the equally prestigious regatta, Menorca Maxi has been confirmed for next year and will be held in May, although the exact date is to be determined by the type of vessels that will accompany the Wally’s.

EL CAMBIO DE UNA FIESTA THE CHANGED FESTIVAL Las fiestas de Mahón han cambiado tanto con el tiempo que si nos remontamos hasta hace cinco siglos serían casi irreconocibles. Básicamente porque ni se celebraran en septiembre ni se dedicaban a la Virgen de Gracia. Se sabe que, por lo menos desde el siglo XVI, la fiesta de los caballos típica menorquina se celebraba el mes de junio bajo la advocación de San Juan, como Ciutadella. En esos días se organizaba una ‘colcada’ que iba hasta la ermita de Sant Joan dels Vergers y allí se celebraban los actos religiosos. Después había las típicas ‘corregudes’ y bailes en las calles. La celebración de San Juan se mantuvo varios siglos, como se aprecia Mahon’s festivals have changed so much over time that if you went back five centuries ago, they would be almost unrecognizable. EXVOTOS MARINEROS PARA LA VIRGEN DE GRACIA VOTIVE OFFERINGS FROM SEAFARERS FOR OUR LADY OF GRACE

Aunque no sea precisamente patrona del mar, tradicionalmente han sido muchos los marineros que se han acordado de la Virgen de Gracia en momentos complicados. Estando en alta mar, navegando en jabeques, bergantines o fragatas, si les azotaba una gran tormenta o se enfrentaban a algún otro peligro y temían no volver con vida, prometían a la Virgen que si les salvaba le harían una ofrenda al regresar a Menorca. Una vez en la isla, sanos y salvos, cumplían su promesa entregando dibujos o pinturas en forma de exvotos a la pequeña ermita de Mahón.

Muchos de estos exvotos, hechos entre el siglo XVIII y hasta el siglo XX, se pueden ver todavía colgados en las paredes del recinto. La mayoría son cuadros pero hay también alguna baldosa mostrando el barco en el que los marineros viajaban, con el nombre del mismo, la fecha y las fuertes tormentas que soportaron, recordando así la intercesión de la Virgen. Una muestra más de la importancia que el puerto y el mar ha tenido para los mahoneses.

Although she is not precisely the patron saint of the sea, but traditionally there has been many seafarers who have remembered Our Lady of Grace in difficult times. While at sea, sailing in xebecs, brigs or tall ships, if they were hit by a storm or faced other threats and feared not to return alive, they made promises to the Virgin that if they were saved, they would make an offering upon their return to Minorca. Once on the island, safe and sound, they fulfilled their promises and delivered drawings or paintings as votive offerings to the small chapel of Mahon.

Many of these votive offerings, made between the 18th and the 20th centuries, can still be seen on the walls of the halls. Most are pictures, but there are also some tiles showing the ship that the sailors had travelled in, bearing her name, the date and the endured severe storms, hence recalling the intercession of the Virgin.

This is yet another example of how important the port and sea have been for the people of Mahon.

La cornisa marítima de Mahón es la de mayor densidad comercial y de servicios náuticos de toda la rada. Mahon’s maritime promenade is the densest in commercial activity and nautical services throughout the harbour. This reality is seen sharply throughout its coastline from an aerial perspective; dotted with endless displays of boats moored bow to the quay or pontoons that jet out from the cement walkway like the bones of a tasty fish.

Primero George Washington, luego John Adams y más tarde Thomas Jefferson tuvieron el Puerto de Mahón entre sus planes, pero ¿para qué? La intención de los padres de la joven nación era instalar una base naval en el Mediterráneo. Aunque no fue hasta 1815 cuando el cuarto presidente de los Estados Unidos de América James Madison (1809-1817) optó por la rada mahonesa para ubicar la primera base naval del US Navy Mediterranean Squadron (1815-1848). Pero ¿por qué necesitaba Estados Unidos una base estable en el Mediterráneo? ¿Y por qué tan lejos de la metrópoli? y sobre todo, ¿por qué eligieron el Puerto de Mahón?. Desde su independencia de Gran Bretaña unos años antes, Estados Unidos empezó a comerciar en la cuenca mediterránea, una de las más ricas del mundo. Pero el Mare Nostrum era un mar peligroso en los albores del siglo XIX y EE.UU. tuvo el mismo problema que el resto de flotas, los piratas berberiscos. First George Washington, then John Adams and then later on Thomas Jefferson, all had Port Mahon in their plans, but why? The intention of the forefathers of the young nation, was to install a naval base in the Mediterranean.

Although it was not until 1815 when the fourth President of the United States James Madison (1809-1817) chose Mahon’s harbour as the first location as the base for the first U.S. Navy Mediterranean Squadron (1815-1848).

Then, why did the United States need a stable base in the Mediterranean? Why so far from the metropolis? And above all, why did they chose Port Mahon?

Since declaring their independence from Britain only a few years earlier, the United States began to trade in the Mediterranean, one of the richest seas in the world, but the Mediterranean was a dangerous sea in the early 19th century and the U.S. had the same problem as other fleets, the Barbary Pirates. Harboured by their home countries, the Sultanate of Morocco, along with the Regency of Algiers, Tunisia and Tripoli, looted civilian vessels, kidnapped civilians for ransom or charged very high taxes to allow ‘safe’ navigation in their waters. This untenable situation caused two “Barbary Wars”.

Tras la victoria estadounidense en la “Primera Guerra Berberisca” (1801 y 1805), la atención del tercer presidente Thomas Jefferson se centró de nuevo en su gran enemigo, la Gran Bretaña. La tensión era máxima y la situación fue deteriorándose hasta que el 1812 ambos países se declararon la guerra ya con James Madison como presidente. Estados Unidos invadió colonias británicas en Canadá y el ejército inglés ocupó grandes territorios americanos. Desde su base en Malta (Menorca había vuelto a la Corona Española) la Royal Navy expulsó a EE.UU. del Mediterráneo en 1812. El ‘Dey’ de Argelia aprovechó la situación para declarar la guerra a Estados Unidos. Jugó sobre seguro. No había naves americanas en el Mediterráneo, y por eso no pudieron responder. Pero al finalizar la guerra anglo-americana en 1815, el Congreso autorizó el despliegue de la fuerza naval en el Mediterráneo. La flota zarpó el 20 de mayo para imponer su ley en la Segunda Guerra Berberisca.

Para ello necesitaba un refugio seguro y Madison eligió el Puerto de Mahón para instalar su primera base naval de ultramar fuera de sus fronteras, dinámica que siguieron otros presidentes como James Monroe, John Quincy Adams o Henry Clay, aunque no fue hasta 1825 cuando esta base fue estable.

After the American victory in the “First Barbary War” (1801 and 1805), the third U.S. president Thomas Jefferson focused once again on his great enemy, Great Britain. The tension was high and the situation was deteriorating until 1812 when the two countries declared war with James Madison as president. The United States invaded British colonies in Canada, and the English troops occupied large American territories. Even Washington arrived and forced Madison himself to flee. From its base in Malta (Minorca was returned to the Spanish Crown) the Royal Navy affirmed its superiority and expelled the U.S. from the Mediterranean in 1812. The ‘Dey’ of Algeria took advantage of the situation and declared war on the United States for not paying taxes. He played it safe. There was no American ships in the Mediterranean, and the Americans could not respond. When the War of 1812 between the U.S. and Britain ended in 1815, Congress authorized the deployment of the naval force in the Mediterranean to encounter the Berber hostility.

The fleet sailed on 20 May to impose its law on the “Second Barbary War”. Because of this, a safe haven was needed in the area, and Madison chose Port Mahon to install its first overseas naval base outside its borders.

The dynamic was continued by other presidents like James Monroe, John Quincy Adams and Henry Clay, but it was not until 1825 when the base at Port Mahon was finally stable.

El joven de 31 años está en un excelente momento deportivo puesto que hace unos meses se proclamó como campeón del mundo de Superkombat en Rumanía. Aunque reside en Amsterdam, donde también estudia Gestión Deportiva, está pasando el verano en Menorca y entrenando para revalidar el título mundial en octubre. ES CASTELL, UNA CIUDAD LIGADA AL CASTILLO A Town Linked to its Castle

Como su propio nombre indica, el origen de este pueblo siempre ha estado ligado al castillo de San Felipe que el rey Carlos I de España ordenó levantar en 1554, unos años después de que el pirata Barbarroja asaltara y saqueara Mahón. De hecho, el primer núcleo de población surgió como un grupo de barracas pegado a la fortaleza para dar cobijo a los trabajadores que la estaban construyendo.

Con el tiempo estas barracas se transformaron en casas de manera que el arrabal se convirtió en el hogar de las familias de los soldados y de los propios militares que defendían el castillo. El núcleo creció tanto que a finales del siglo XVII los tejados de las casas casi tocaban las paredes de la fortaleza. Algunas de estas se tiraron abajo para hacer espacio pero no fue suficiente. Por eso, cuando Menorca pasó a manos de Gran Bretaña en 1713, los ingleses decidieron trasladar el arrabal y ampliar la fortaleza.

As its name suggests, the beginning of this town has always been linked to its castle, San Felipe or St. Phillip, which was built by command of King Charles I of Spain in 1554, a few years after the pirate Redbeard assaulted and sacked Mahon. In fact, the first population emerged from a group of barracks next to the fortress which lodged the workers who were building it. Over time these barracks transformed into houses making the outskirts the home for the families of the soldiers who were defending the castle. The settlement grew so much that in the late 17th century the roofs of the dwellings almost touched the walls of the fortress. Some of these were demolished to make room, but it was not enough. So, when Minorca fell into British hands in 1713, they decided to move the community and expand the fortress.

San Felipe se convirtió así en la construcción defensiva más importante de Europa en el momento pero seguía teniendo un punto débil. El nuevo arrabal, o Saint Philippe’s Town como lo llamaban los ingleses, volvió a crecer de forma desmesurada quedando otra vez demasiado cerca del castillo. Tan cerca, que los franceses utilizaron las casas del pueblo para parapetarse tras sus muros y atacar mejor San Felipe cuando tomaron Menorca en el año 1756, como reflejan varios dibujos y cuadros de la época.

Así, cuando siete años después los ingleses recuperaron el control de la isla, aprendieron la lección y decidieron demoler el arrabal y volver a trasladar el pueblo a un espacio lo suficientemente alejado del castillo para no repetir el mismo error, entre las zonas de Calasfonts y Cala Corb. No fue tarea fácil porque en ese momento el arrabal ocupaba unas 18 hectáreas y contaba con una población de 4.000 personas.

El encargado de diseñar el pueblo definitivo fue el ingeniero británico Patrick Mackellar, que proyectó una plaza de armas con cuarteles militares como elemento central del núcleo. A su alrededor, dispuso una retícula de manzanas con calles anchas, rectas y perpendicula-

Thus St. Phillip became the most important defensive edifice in Europe at that time, but it still had a weak point. The new settlement, or as the English called it, Saint Philippe’s Town, excessively grew back and once again, too close to the castle. So near, that the French used the houses to hide behind the walls and better attack St. Phillip when they seized Minorca in 1756, as depicted in several drawings and paintings of the period.

Consequently, seven years later when the British recaptured the island, they learned their lesson and decided to demolish the settlements and relocate the people to a place far enough from the castle to avoid repeating the same mistake, between the areas of Calasfonts and Cala Corb. It was not an easy task because at that time the village occupied some 18 hectares and had a population of 4,000.

The commissioned engineer who was chosen to design the final village was the British engineer Patrick Mackellar, who designed a square with military quarters as its central nucleus. All round it was a network of blocks with wide, straight and perpendicular streets that imitated the typical urban development illustrated

Los pobladores fueron obligados a trasladarse, aunque recibieron una parcela idéntica a la que tenían en el antiguo arrabal.

Cuando los españoles conquistaron Menorca en el año 1782, cambiaron el nombre de Georgetown por el de Villa Real de Carlos III (Villacarlos). El nombre popular de Es Castell se recuperó de forma oficial en 1989. from that time period. In 1771 the construction of the new town was ordered to be built and named Georgetown in honour of King George III of Great Britain. The villagers were forced to move, although they received a parcel of land identical to what they had in the old settlement.

Once the Spanish conquered Minorca in 1782, they renamed Georgetown, Villa Real de Carlos III (Villacarlos). The popular name, Es Castell, was officially recovered in 1989.

EL ROMANO QUE CONQUISTO MENORCA THE ROMAN WHO DEFINED MINORCA Quinto Cecilio Metelo (nacido en Circa en 170 a.C.), llamado el Baleárico tras la conquista de las islas más occidentales del Mare Nostrum, forma parte de la historia de Menorca desde que en el año 123 a.C. inició la dominación militar de la Isla,una de las más beneficiosas de nuestra historia. La romanización, como ha ocurrido en otros muchos lugares, aportó a Menorca una larga época de paz y prospéridad tras varios siglos de conquistas, masacres e infortunios. La ‘Pax Romana’ permitió implantar un idioma, implantar mejoras en agricultura, la llegada de nuevo ganado y la apertura de caminos (20 calzadas en Menorca).

Pero la conquista de la ‘Balearis Minor’ no fue fácil. Su entrada en barco por el Puerto de Mahón fue convulsa.

Desde sus costas, los honderos, guerreros temidos en todo el mundo por su habilidad en lanzar proyectiles de piedra y plomo, recibieron a la escuadra de Metelo.

Pero el cónsul, un excelente estratega, desplegó velas de cuero a modo de escudo para protegerse de los proyectiles y poder desembarcar.

Elegido cónsul en 123 a. C., emprendió la conquista de las Islas Baleares, bajo el pretexto de que éstas eran un gran refugio de piratas y con el fin de asegurar el comercio marítimo con Roma y con la Península Ibérica.

La romanización de Menorca se inicia desde los puertos Jammona (Ciutadella), Sanicera (Sanitja) en Fornells, pero sobre todo desde el “Portus Magonis”, que gracias a su puerto, acaba convirtiéndose en un centro de gran interés para el comercio y su ciudad (Magona) adquiere el rango de “Municipium Flavianum Magontanum”. Al amparo de un seguro y rentable Puerto de Mahón creció una clase de ricos comerciantes que dieron a ‘Magona’ su gran dimensión.

Quintus Caecilius Metellus (born circa 170 B.C.), became known as “The Balearic” after the conquest of the western islands of the Mediterranean Sea. He took part in the history of Minorca as he initiated the military domination of the island in 123 B.C., which was one of the most beneficial dominions in our history. Romanization, which took place in many other lands, provided Minorca with a long era of peace and prosperity after centuries of conquests, massacres and misfortunes. The ‘Pax Romana’, or Roman Peace, permitted a language to be implemented, improvements in agriculture, arrival of new livestock and opening of roads (20 roads in Minorca).

Nonetheless the conquest of the ‘Balearis Minor’, the smaller Balearic Island, was not easy. Entering Port Mahon by boat was toilsome. From the shores, the slingers, worldwide-feared warriors for their ability to launch projectiles of stone and lead, waited for Metellus’s fleet. In spite of this, the consul, an excellent strategist, unfurled his leather sails as a shield to protect against projectiles and disembarked his ships.

Elected consul in 123 B.C., he undertook the conquest of the Balearic Islands, under the pretext that they were the great refuge for pirates, and with the intention of ensuring maritime trade with Rome and the Iberian Peninsula.

The Romanization of Minorca started from the different ports Jammona (Ciutadella), Sanicera (Sanitja) in Fornells, but mostly from “Portus Magonis”, which became a centre of great interest for trade, its city “Magona”, today known as Mahon, subsequently acquired the status of “Municipium Flavianum Magontanum”. With the protection of a safe and profitable Port Mahon, a wealthy class of merchants flourished and gave ‘Magona’ its grandeur.

LA SALSA DE MAHÓN THE SAUCE FROM MAHON

Se ha debatido mucho sobre el origen de la salsa mahonesa, seguramente una de las más populares en el mundo. Sin embargo, de cada vez está más claro que esta salsa es originaria de Menorca, y que desde la isla se expandió durante la dominación francesa del siglo XVIII dándose a conocer con el nombre de “mahonesa”. Hasta ese momento aquí se conocía con el nombre de “all-i-oli bo” y era la base de numerosas recetas populares, como certifica el libro de la época “L’art de la cuina” escrito por el monje Fra Francesc Roger. Cuenta la leyenda que cuando los franceses tomaron Menorca en 1756, estando en Mahón el mariscal Richelieu, pidió que le dieran algo de comer en una taberna en la que quedaba poca cosa. El cocinero le condimentó el humilde plato con la salsa y el francés quedó tan maravillado que se llevó la receta. Leyendas aparte, un comité de expertos encabezado por Pep Pelfort, presidente del Centre d’Estudis Gastronòmics, ha logrado demostrar que definitivamente la mahonesa no es de origen francés como muchos creían, puesto que esta afirmación se basaba en un falso poema datado por error del siglo XVII, cuando en realidad es un pastiche francés del XIX. Así pues, el “all-i-oli bo” de Menorca hoy conocido como mahonesa (o por deformación fonética ‘mayonesa’) es bastante anterior a la conquista francesa. Toca ahora reivindicar el lugar que la isla se merece en la historia por la aportación al mundo de esta simple pero maravillosa salsa.

The origin has been debated, of the sauce called mayonnaise, of surely one of the most popular sauces in the world. However, it is progressively becoming more evident that this dressing is originally from Minorca, and its popularity increased and spread from the island during the French Occupation of the 18th century and which gave it its name, “mahonesa” in Spanish or in English at that time “mahonnaise”, and is known today as “mayonnaise”. Up until then, on the island it was called “all-i-oli bo” and was the base of many popular recipes, as validated by the book of that era, “L’art de la cuina” written by the monk Fra Francesc Roger. Legend has it, that when the French captured Minorca in 1756, Marshal Richelieu was in Mahon, and he ordered something to eat in a tavern where there was little to nothing left. The cook dressed the humble dish with the sauce, and the French Marshal was so amazed that he took the recipe with him. A committee of experts led

by Pep Pelfort, president of the Centre of Gastronomy Studies, have been able to confirm that mayonnaise is definitely not of French descent, as this statement was based on a fake poem mistakenly dated from the 17th century, when it was actually a French pastiche from the 19th century. Thus, the “all-i-oli bo” of Minorca, which today is known as mayonnaise is significantly earlier than the French Conquest. It is now time to claim the island’s long deserved place in history for providing the world with this sauce.

El impresionante Puerto natural de Mahón ha inspirado a muchos artistas a lo largo de la historia y por eso seguimos con la serie de pintores que han dejado su huella y particular visión de este espacio. El más contemporáneo es Andrés Moll Pons, el artista mahonés que firma este cuadro del muelle comercial con todos los detalles de edificios, barcos, personas y el movimiento que se vive. Lo pintó hará unos cuatro años y no es el único que tiene de la zona ya que para Moll el puerto es más que un motivo a plasmar en un lienzo. Es también su casa y el primer paisaje que ven sus ojos cada mañana, puesto que reside en S’Altra Banda.

The stunning, natural Port Mahon has inspired many artists throughout history and that is why we are continuing the series of artists who have left their mark and particular vision of this space. The most contemporary of them all is Andrés Moll Pons, the artist who signed this work of art depicting the commercial quay full of details with buildings, boats, people and the existing movement.

He painted it about four years ago, and it is not the only painting of the area; according to Moll, there is more than one reason to capture the port on canvas. It is also his home and the first sight his eyes see every morning, living in S’Altra Banda.

The author of the second work of art is unknown, although it has some historical inaccuracies, it reproduces a scene of several historical figures in the port in the 18th century. One of those who pose with St. Phillip Castle in the background is the count Cifuentes, governor of Minorca. The third image includes boats and fishermen from a greater work of art attributed to Anton Schranz. This painter was born in Germany but lived and started a family in Minorca between 1793 and 1817.

EL ACORAZADO ROMA, la desgracia que unió a dos pueblos THE BATTLESHIP ‘ROMA’, THE TRAGEDY THAT BROUGHT TWO COMMUNITIES TOGETHER Aquel día de septiembre de 1943, en plena Segunda Guerra Mundial, era una jornada tranquila en el Puerto de Mahón, hasta que por la bocana aparecieron cuatro buques de guerra de la Regia Armada Italiana, el crucero ‘Atilio Regolo’ y los contra-torpederos ‘Mitragliere’, ‘Fuciliere’ y ‘Carabiniere’ cargados con 626 heridos recogidos del mar tras una de las mayores tragedias navales del siglo XX, el hundimiento del Acorazado Roma, el que fallecieron 1.395 personas. El Hospital de la Isla del Rey, todavía en activo, se movilizó para dar cabida a este cargamento de dolor procedente de Cerdeña, donde se hundió el Roma. El 9 de septiembre de 1943, unos días antes, un bombardero alemán descargó dos bombas radio-dirigidas Fritz-X contra el ‘Acorazado Roma’, orgullo de la Regia Armada Italiana, cerca de la isla de Asinara, al noreste de Cerdeña. La primera de ellas impactó en la aleta de babor a las 15:45 y la segunda en el puente a las 15:50.

Esta última alcanzó la cámara del depósito de las cargas. La deflagración puso acero del buque a más de 1.000 grados. El Roma, ya condenado, giró sobre si mismo y se partió en dos. El impresionante buque, de 240 metros de eslora y 41.650 toneladas se hundió en media hora (16:20 horas) con 1.825 marineros y 85 oficiales entre ellos dos almirantes y todo el Estado Mayor.

soldiers from Sardinia, where she had sunk. The solidarity of the people of Minorca was legendary. Since the Hospital had a limited capacity to respond to the wounded, many of those hospitalized were discharged to free beds.

11 sailors arrived dead at Port Mahon and were buried in the municipal cemetery, along with another 13 who passed away while on the island. Furthermore, the people welcomed the soldiers during their recovery and gave them everything they needed: clothing, shelter, food, a place to sleep ... But, what caused this?

On 9 September 1943, a few days before, a German bomber fired two Fritz X radio-controlled bombs at the battleship ‘Roma’, the pride of the Italian Regina Marina, near the island of Asinara in north-eastern Sardinia.

The first struck her port quarter at 15:45 hours and the second hit her bridge at 15:50 hours. The latter reached her reservoir chamber. The blast brought the ship’s steel to more than 1,000 degrees. ‘Roma’, already condemned, capsized and broke in two. The impressive vessel of 240 meters in length and weighing 41,650 tonnes sank in half an hour (at 16:20 hours) with 1,825 sailors and 85 officers including two admirals and all the crew.

Tan solo seis días antes (3 de septiembre), el Mariscal Pietro Badoglio, nuevo hombre fuerte del gobierno italiano tras la detención de Benito Mussolini, decidió firmar el armisticio con los aliados para detener la guerra y que obligaba a Italia a pasarse al bando aliado y traicional a la Alemania Nazi. Just six days before (3 September), Marshal Pietro Badoglio, the new strong leader in charge of the Italian government following the arrest of Benito Mussolini, decided to sign the armistice with the Allies to end the war and require Italy to defect to the Allied side betraying Nazi Germany. This decision created a new enemy for Italy, Germany, the country that was once its friend. Nevertheless Badoglio ordered to keep the signature a secret, and it was not until 8 September when he finally decided to inform the Regina Marina who at that moment was in the midst of preventing the U.S from disembarking in Italy. At first the Italian officers were in disbelief, especially when they saw that a day later, the planes of the ‘betrayed’ Germany in its height of their armament, attacked them viciously and sank them. It was terrifying.

Siempre el Puerto Always the Port El Puerto de Mahón, siempre el Puerto de Mahón. En tiempos en que la única forma de salir de la Isla era por mar, la rada mahonesa era el gran punto de referencia.

El aspecto de los humildes trabajadores de la zona marítima se fusionada con la encopetada vestimenta de las damas de la clase burguesa a punto de tomar la barca que les lleve hasta la fragata a vapor y vela, fondeada frente a la Isla del Rey. Esta imagen captada desde el Moll de Llevant, en las inmediaciones de lo que hoy es el Club Marítimo de Mahón a finales del siglo XIX (1890), relata con extrema nitidez la imagen social de Mahón y el aspecto del Puerto, sin casas.

Port Mahon always was, has, is and will be Port Mahon.

At a time when the only way off the island was by sea, Mahon’s harbour was the great reference point. The appearance of the humble workers of the maritime area is fused with the posh attire of the ladies of the bourgeois class about to take the boat that would take them to the steamship, anchored in front of the Isla del Rey (King’s Island).

This photograph was taken from Moll de Llevant (the eastern quay), in the vicinity of what is now the Club Marítimo de Mahón, Mahon Yacht Club, in the late 19th century (1890), recounts with extreme clarity the social image of Mahon, and how the port looked without houses.

Ocio en S’Altra Banda Leisure at ‘S’Altra Banda’ S’Altra Banda del Puerto, sobre todo el Riu Pla, era uno los grandes lugares de ocio de los mahoneses durante los siglos XVIII, XIX y principios del XX. Los fines de semana, la vacaciones o los días festivos eran motivo suficiente como para que los vecinos de la villa se acercasen a la playas que bordeaban el litoral. Parece imposible, pero dónde hoy están la Gesa o el Cos Nou escuetos y apelmazados arenales permitían el baño de la gente en aguas límpias que tampoco tienen nada que ver con las actuales. Carnavales, Sant Joan o jornadas de estío rompían la tranquilidad de una zona muy frecuentada, como muestra esta foto de la década de 1890.

‘S’Altra Banda del Puerto’, The other shore of the port, especially the Riu Pla, was one of the great leisure settings of the people of Mahon during the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries. At weekend, holiday or during any type of ‘festivals’ were all reason enough for the residents of the village to escape to the beaches lining the coast. It seems impossible, but where Gesa (the electric company) and Cos Nou are situated, existed various small sandy areas packed together where people bathed in clean waters, which nowadays are nothing like they were before. Carnivals, the Sant Joan festival or summer days disturbed the tranquillity of the busy area, as shown in this photo from the 1890s.

CURSOS PARA NUEVAS TITULACIONES NÁUTICAS New Courses for Nautical Certificates La posesión de titulaciones náuticas para manejar cualquier embarcación de recreo es una exigencia cada vez más férrea. El aumento de inspecciones registradas tras la aprobación este año de las nuevas prestaciones de cada modalidad, han incrementado la solicitud de matrículas en centros de enseñanza especializado como la empresa DeNautica, ubicada en Moll de Llevant, en el mismo edificio que el Club Marítimo de Mahón. La academia náutica de Miguel Olives cuenta con los más nuevos medios técnicos para impartir cursos de Patrón de Navegación Básica, Patrón de Embarcaciones de Recreo, Patrón de Yate y Capitán de Yate. Su pizarra electrónica, una pantalla dónde poder explicar con trazados hechos a mano, es uno de sus principales argumentos para convertirla en el mejor centro de enseñanza de este tipo de titulaciones, junto a su múltiples conexiones a internet para todos los alumnos.

The demand for possessing certification to navigate any type of recreational boat is fiercely increasing. The rise in registered inspections following the approval of new characteristics for each type, have increased the demand for enrolment in specialised schools such as DeNautica, located in Moll de Llevant, located in the same building as the Mahon Yacht Club (Club Marítimo de Mahón). The nautical academy of Miguel Olives is using the latest technical methods to teach courses: Powerboat Level 2 (22 September), Advanced Powerboat or aka Coastal Skipper (22 September), Yachtmaster Offshore (6 October) and Ocean Yachtmaster (22 September), these are the last courses given in 2014. Their interactive whiteboard and multiple internet connections for all students, are some of the main features that make it one of the best schools for this type of degree in Minorca.

Ever since PORTUM was released in April of this year, its acceptance has grown, exceeding our own expectations. In these past six months 40,000 copies have been put into circulation and in almost all the distribution points they ended up being out of stock. At www.portum. es, downloads have also multiplied, from Spain but also from many other countries. At PORTUM’s editorial office, requests have come from England, Germany and France to send them all the issues of the magazine that they had seen during their holiday here. Portum Travels has received pictures of our readers with the magazine in various parts of the world.
