The Sacral Chakra By: Aria de Lima

Located just below the navel, the Sacral chakra is the second of the seven major chakras and represented by the colour orange. This chakra is the one that focuses on creativity, helping one understand what brings them joy. It shows them what kind of activities make them feel good and what brings them pleasure. With the powerful connection to your emotional, sexual, and creative being, some signs that your sacral chakra may be out of balance include, feelings of fear or depression, emotional instability, sexual dysfunction, reproductive issues, and addiction.

Dealing with these signs can be difficult but here are some ways to help balance out your sacral chakra.

MOVE TO THE SOUND OF HEALING By: Andrea Sipcic

Music, more specifically music’s lyrics, are largely influential on our mood and can have a big impact on our vibration, especially with repeated consistency. Although we often find ourselves gravitating towards the popular, catchy songs out on the radio, it is very important to pay attention to the lyrics we are constantly listening to and singing along to. Are the lyrics uplifting and spark joy or happiness? Or are they sad and slightly depressing? Which do you naturally find yourself gravitating towards? If you’re sad, do you gravitate to sad songs, or happier ones? While some of the sad or angry songs can seem relatable, the songs with positive lyrics not only reinforce the positive messages, but also set positive intentions.

The following is a list of 15 uplifting songs that can be anyone’s go-to for a quick pick me up, whether you’re a little down, or already feeling uplifted and would like to keep the momentum going:

Healing through colour By: Aria de Lima

Colour therapy, also known as chromotherapy, seeks to treat physical, spiritual, and mental stresses through the use of colours that are connected to the chakras or body’s energy centres. Essentially each colour encourages a different response depending on the chakra it is associated with. Incorporating the colour associated with each individual chakra can encourage the balancing of the particular chakra. Some colours are more soothing and calming, while others are more inclined to cause someone to feel an increase in energy levels. For example, many spas will use colours that reflect nature to create a relaxing and calming setting. These are commonly blues and greens. Places that want to encourage high energy levels tend to use colours that promote an energy boost. These are colours like yellow and red. Incorporating colour therapy into your everyday life is easy to do too. One way to work with colour therapy is through your wardrobe. Do a little shopping and add some new colourful pieces to your closet or maybe break out those pieces that you’ve had stashed away for “one day.” Another option is to add more colour to the environment around you; maybe a new painting or pillows. You can also use multi-coloured light bulbs in your light fixtures. It can also work from the inside out. Fruits and vegetables are an amazing way to mix a little extra colour into your life.

The Brain Gym® Programme By: Tanya Mouland

“Movement is the door to learning.” Dr. Paul E. Dennison, creator of Brain Gym® For almost 4 decades, in classrooms, private sessions, therapy, the office, and even at home, people have been using powerfully effective and easy-to-use movements and activities to support learning, behaviour, and performance. This effective change-making programme is called Brain Gym. You may have heard of Brain Gym, or even experienced some of the 26 activities, but it is so much more than just the ‘26.’ Brain Gym is the fundamental programme of Educational Kinesthetics (Edu-K), the study of movement in relation to learning, and it draws on techniques from many fields, such as applied kinesiology, developmental optometry, learning theories, Traditional Chinese Medicine (five elements and meridians), and movement therapies to assist with whole-brain integration. A Little History Paul E. Dennison, Ph.D., began his research into reading skills and its relation to movement and brain development in the 1960s with students at his learning Centres. Gail, an artist and movement educator who became his wife and partner, joined Paul in the 1970s. During those ten years of researching, studying, and playing, Educational Kinesiology came about and is now referred to as Educational Kinesthetics. The Dennisons began teaching Educational Kinesiology in the early 1980s, and in 1986, published “Brain Gym: Activities for Whole-Brain Learning.”

Hearts at Play 2020, Paul E. & Gail Dennison, Published May 2020 https://heartsatplay.com/

The Brain-Body Connection We begin by learning to move. A baby’s movements are random, and as they develop and practice, the movements become more organized. The natural development steps a baby goes through, innately, stimulate and wire-up their brains. It can take up to ten years for the brainstem, limbic system, and hemispheres to be wired up and inter-connected. When something prevents all the necessary steps to happen, a variety of challenges can develop. We then move to learn. As Dr. Carla Hannaford, a neurophysiologist, author, and Brain Gym consultant, writes, “Learning, thought, creativity, and intelligence are not processes of the brain alone, but of the whole body. Sensations, movements, emotions, and brain integrative functions are grounded in the body. Movement integrates and anchors new information and experience into our neural networks.”

When the brain-body system feels safe, is relaxed and balanced, the information coming in through the senses is processed, organized, and assimilated. The limbic system, brainstem, and hemispheres are functioning in harmony; we have whole brain integration and access to unlimited potential. We are able to focus easily, connect with others, perform confidently, be creative, plan, and communicate effectively.

Our brain’s primary job is keeping us alive by recognizing and reacting to danger. When danger is perceived, stress hormones are released in the limbic system. This creates huge physiological responses that impact learning, behaviour, and performance. First, the brainstem sends a message and the tendon guard reflex, an automatic, instinctual whole-body reaction is activated. Muscles along the back of the body tighten. Second, the eyes and ears begin looking and listening for the danger. The body has three choices: freeze, fight, or run away. Third, at the same time, blood flow changes in the brain. When under stress, we revert primarily to using just one side of our brain; our dominant hemisphere. We become one-sided; homolateral. The nondominant hemisphere shuts down by nearly 85% (the large blue area of the stressed brain), indicating little to no activity. Mayo Clinic 2020, PET Scan of brain for depression, Published April 25, 2020https://www.mayoclinic.org/testsprocedures/pet-scan/multimedia/-pet-scan-of-the-brain-for-depression/img-20007400

When these changes occur, we may lose access to memory, not understand what we are reading, or be able to focus on what is being said. Our bodies become tight and our breathing changes. We may experience anxiety, feel uncoordinated, or experience physical discomfort. Learning potential is essentially cut in half. Planning, creativity, and other executive functions are not the priority when stressed or in survival mode!

“These movements are magic!” said 8 year old Kayla Brain Gym activities and exercises help in resetting the brain-body system by restoring the body’s innate desired state of balance and sense of safety. There are exercises that release the tendon guard reflex, relaxing and restoring comfort in the muscles along the back of the body; some that reorganize the ability to process sensory input; some that provide bilateral movement to stimulate both hemispheres simultaneously.

Kayla uses her Brain Gym exercises when she wants to focus better and do homework more quickly. Kayla is doing the “hook up” pose.

When the brain-body system is functioning the way it is designed to, we have access to our whole brain, unlocking the gateway to both hemispheres and higher executive functions. Full potential is available. Not Just for Kids… a great tool for parents, and even grand-parents!

“It is so amazing to have a great selection of tools to support my children in their learning and sleeping and physical activities… and the tools to support myself!” saida Kristal, K.F. teacher and mother of three.

As we get older, we develop coping mechanisms and compensations to deal with stress. Eventually these begin to give way. There are new aches and pains, frustration or anxiety levels increase, names are forgotten, there is brain fog, and so on. Brain Gym can release the compensations quickly and restore the brain-body system’s innate design for optimal performance. For parents, doing the Brain Gym opens up possibilities for you, too. Consider doing them with your children…A little self-care time together!

Today, individuals of all ages are living in survival mode. Life has become more stressful and more two-dimensional, more computer and phone screens, and much less moving. We are seeing the impact of this with the increase of stress-related challenges in people of all ages. It is time to reconnect back to the body and function as a whole system: brain, body, and, oh, yes, heart. Do you need Brain Gym in your life?!

Monthly Movement By: Tanya Mouland

The Cross Crawl is a full body, cross lateral movement. How to do: Lift left knee, reach across and touch with right hand or forearm. Repeat with right knee and left arm. Do as many repetitions as you’d like. Do slowly and consciously. Notice your breathing and upper body muscle tension. Can be done lying down, sitting, or standing. Do what is best for you. Note: Little ones 5 and under may do the same side movement (left/left and right/right). Do not correct them. Developmentally, this is where they might be and that is okay! Variations: Lift left leg, reach down and touch left foot with right hand. Repeat on the other side. Lift left foot behind right leg and reach back to touch left foot with right hand. Cross crawls with skipping or moving around the room. Benefits: Coordinates the left and right sides of the body, as well as stimulates and connects the hemispheres. When done slowly, improves balance, coordination, and body awareness (proprioception). Supports postural stabilization.

Raising your children and their vibration By: Andrea Sipcic While there are many tools, oils, crystals, and such to help us raise our vibration, it is important to remember that what we do and engage in throughout our day is just as, if not more important. It is just as essential for children to keep their vibration lifted, especially seeing as that they can easily absorb other people’s low energies, including their parents.

The following are 5 activities that can be done with your children or grandchildren and incorporated into your life regularly to maintain a high vibration: Nature Walks Being outside is super beneficial to us in several ways. It not only helps to expel any low energy frequencies we may have been holding onto, but it also helps us to re-charge ourselves and breathe better. You may have noticed how refreshed you feel after being outdoors in nature around trees, water, and animals. This is another reason children love being outdoors and one of the best, easiest ways to raise your and their vibration.

Bike Rides Going outside for a bike ride incorporates not only the benefits of being outdoors, but in addition, the benefits of movement, benefitting us physically, but also mentally and spiritually. It is also a very freeing experience to be outside cycling, and another children’s favourite.

Cooking/Baking A great way to have fun and get your creative juices flowing is to cook or bake some of your favourite meals or dessert. This is another popular one with young children. Not only does it strike up their imagination and creativity, but it also gives a sense of accomplishment, pride, and fulfillment. In addition, everyone is then able to enjoy the results of the collaborative efforts together.

Drawing/Painting Even if you or your children are not necessarily the “artsy” type, drawing, painting, or any type of arts and crafts, is another extraordinary way to get the creative juices flowing while enhancing your imagination and vibration. Whether done free hand, or something like a paint by number, art is an excellent way to enjoy yourself with your children and ensure that a high vibration is maintained.

Watching a Family Movie/Show Although sometimes underrated, watching a feel-good, family-friendly movie, show, or even sports event together is an enjoyable way to spend time as a family. Comedies and heart warming options are preferred, and sure ways to raise or maintain a high vibration.

tips for empaths By: Andrea Sipcic

In our previous month’s issue, we discussed what empathy is and ways to know if you are an empath. Being an empath can have its challenges, as we are constantly surrounded by many different types of energies that can affect us, and although many are positive and good-feeling, plenty are not. That being said, it is important to not only protect ourselves from any harsh or draining energies, but also to take care of ourselves on different levels, so we are best equipped and stable when out and around others. Here are some things to keep in mind if you are an empath:

Put yourself first and know when to say “no” to others’ requests and needs if they are impeding your well-being. Let go of others’ emotional trauma, heartache, and problems. Just because you feel, understand, and probably can relate to them, doesn’t mean you need to hold onto the emotions and stress. Emphasize and celebrate the good. There may be some turbulent times as an empath, and in our life in general, but celebrating the good (big and small) puts us in a higher vibration, thus attracting happier, more positive experiences. Direct your attention to and process your own emotions, ensuring that as much as others may rely on you for support, you require the same from yourself and others. Meditate regularly and spend time alone. Use crystals and gemstones for healing and protection. Journal your thoughts and emotions as a way to process and release them. Spend time in nature as a way to calm, ground, and rejuvenate yourself.

Releasing Stagnant Energy Massage

Yoga/Stretching This is one of the most well known methods of releasing tension in the body. Stretching and opening up different areas of our body that otherwise would not be targeted, with the essential use of breath, allows movement of stagnant energy in our body.

This is one of the more misunderstood forms of therapy to release tension. Many perceive massage as a “luxury,” unnecessary form of pampering that you do more so as a “treat” to yourself. Really it is a form of manual manipulation that holds many benefits, especially when done regularly. Other than releasing tension, it allows for increased blood flow, stimulation of the lymphatic system, alleviation of stress and anxiety, just to name a few.

Acupuncture This is a huge component of Traditional Chinese Medicine, focusing on the balance and flow of Qi (pronounced chee), known as vital life force energy that flows throughout the body. When there is disruption in this flow, it is likely to have some sort of eventual

disharmony within the physical body. Acupuncture is geared to help alleviate that.

Myofascial Release A form of gentle, manual massage, this treatment focuses on the myofascial tissues, the tissues that wrap, connect, and support the muscles, along with other vital components of the body. This therapy is also known to aid in releasing chronic pain.

Tapping This is a method of alleviation combining Ancient Chinese Acupressure and Modern Psychology. The idea is to use your fingertips to tap specific meridian points while talking or thinking through different emotions and painful memories or experiences. This works to physically alter your brain, energy system, and body simultaneously.

Clarifying Clary Sage By: Andrea Sipcic

The name Clary Sage Oil is derived from the Latin word clarus, meaning clarifying or cleansing. Evidently, the plant is very powerful in its ability to promote feelings of clarity and calm in aromatherapy applications and uses. In this way, it also has anti-anxiety, anti-depressant, and sedative abilities that prompt relaxation as well as helping to minimize anxiety, irritability, and dizziness.

On a different note, Clary Sage Oil has just as powerful uses medicinally, topically, and cosmetically. The plant has properties that are known to be anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, antioxidant, antiseptic, astringent, analgesic, anti-anxiety, hypotensive, anti-epileptic, and antibiotic. Some benefits include:

Balancing hormones and supporting women’s health, primarily in relation to menstruation and menopause (diminishing pain, cramps, night sweats, hot flashes, etc.) Stimulates the libido in men and women Soothes the skin and calms rashes and inflammation Helps to balance and stabilize sebum production, preventing acne breakouts Tones, tightens, and strengthens the skin and muscles as well as the hair to prevent hair loss Reduces cholesterol Kills bacteria and infections Aids digestion The following are a few main ways clary sage oil can be used. Be advised that it is not recommended to put the oil directly onto the skin.

Mix the oil into water in a spray bottle to create a room or bedding spray, or even as a face mist. Ensure to shake between spritzes. Add a few drops into a carrier oil such as jojoba to create a massage oil. Make a stronger mixture by adding more of the oil into the carrier to dab onto your pulse points (wrists, temples, or behind the knees and ears). Add several drops into the bath. Use in a diffuser. Citrus oils, as well as Sandalwood, Frankincense, and Geranium, make great mixtures with Clary Sage Oil.

Aries Full Moon - Sun In Libra By Savita Moon Child Breaking Barriers On October 2nd we have a full moon in Aries opposing the sun in Libra. Libra is a sign of balance, harmony, love, and cooperation, whereas Aries is the sign of the warrior, the courageous one, the impatient one. It is the sign of me, myself and I. What I want, what I don’t want, what I like and what I dislike, meaning there will be a pull of what my ego energy wants and how I want to feel about others and my connection with others.

The ruler of Aries is Mars and Mars is currently in retrograde until November 13th and is also square with Jupiter (the planet of knowledge and expansion), Saturn (the planet of discipline) and Pluto (the planet of transformation), which are all in the sign of Capricorn. Capricorn energy will leave us with a feeling of resistance, where we don’t want to be told what to do! As a collective there could be a possibility of protests, marches, and demonstrations against the square Capricorn planets i.e the government, authorities, organizations, rules, and regulations, which may play out globally.

The question is, what is playing out inside of you? Mars has a strong energy of taking initiative and pushing through your own limitations. The moon in Aries is about looking within or your internal emotions. Where are you stopping yourself from being bold and brave and going on an adventure? Are you being robotic and stagnant? Do you need to break out of limitations you might have set upon yourself?

Physically you can put your energy and focus into exercise, like lifting weights or joining that bootcamp session you may have been watching on social media for weeks. Push yourself further and harder than you usually would, just to break away from self confinement. With Mercury in retrograde opposite Uranus, we have a tendency to fixate on our own appearances. Use this energy for the good, as it can enable you to have incredible insights into the way our mind works in order to change any outdated thought patterns.

Where can you go beyond in the time of this full moon? Emotionally, mentally, and spiritually, what could you learn and study to stretch and enhance your perspective? Capricorn energy can bring a sense of order but Mars won’t like that at all! Mars is about courage and action and Saturn is about restraint and keeping things under control, causing obstacles to overcome, which is why you have to push through these energies and go beyond your limitations.

This full moon is about finding balance and harmony between the two. Again, due to Mercury currently being in retrograde, you may also find yourself contemplating, shall I? Shan’t I? Where are you standing on the fence and where do you need to jump off?

It’s also a good time to think about what old stories you can let go of on this Full Moon so you can align with your true purpose. Let go of your own expectations and start creating boundaries guarding you from other’s expectations. Once you have surrendered and released the old, you will allow for room to experiment with new things and ideas. This will enable you to call in new energy and create a new version of oneself.

Allow the energy of the Aries Full Moon to guide you. Be open to the possibility that it will be easier than you would expect. Once aligned with your purpose, use the energy of Aries to inspire you. Take charge of your life, be a leader, boss up, and own it. Tell people what you need and what you want. Let go of expectations. This will only lead to disappointment. Take action. This moon is challenging you to produce fresh and exciting ideas. Pay attention to your desires and to signs and messages from your Guides. The Universe wants you to grow and expand. Everything will happen in time so be patient. Small steps lead to progress and always pay off. The Universe wants you to be healthy, happy, and abundant.

Twin Flames By: Priya Ali

The term Twin Flame has become a commonly used term in the past decade. Over the years we have actually seen a Twin Flame industry develop. There are many books written on Twin Flames, Twin Flame coaches, Twin Flame healers, and Twin Flame readers, just to name a few of the resources that have become more than readily available. A Twin Flame is described as a soul that has ascended to a certain level, enabling it to split into two bodies that will eventually come to each other to support one another with their life purpose. Here are some answers to commonly asked questions about the Twin Flame relationship and journey.

Where did the concept of Twin Flames come from? There have been many theories on Twin Flames from philosophers such as Plato and Socrates. One theory states that original humans had two heads, four arms, and four legs. The Gods felt threatened by them and split them into two, creating one soul in two bodies. Another theory is that there are a limited number of Twin Flames. They meet each other in an effort to heal within and become whole in order to fulfill their individual life purpose and elevate the collective consciousness.

What do I do to find my Twin Flame? Twin flames appear when those who are in search of a higher consciousness begin to ascend on the path of living their true and authentic life purpose. When one half of the twin begins this journey, the other will feel, hear, and receive the energy of the calling and a meeting of the two will take place divinely.

Are all Twin Flame relationships romantic? No. The purpose of a Twin Flame relationship is to allow each twin to evolve their individual selves and find wholeness within themselves. However, many people are motivated by the prospect of a romantic love relationship. From this motivation they are driven towards the inner healing work they require.

Is reunification the goal? Yes, but it’s the reunion with your individual higher self. Should you and your twin choose to come together in a physical love relationship once you both have reached union with your individual self, it’s just icing on the cake. Without the cake, there is nothing to ice.

Are Twin Flames and Soul mates the same thing? No, the Twin Flame is a much deeper and intense connection in both negative and positive ways. We have many soul mates in life and generally speaking, these are easier relationships to foster, facilitate, and grow in. Soul mate relationships do offer opportunities for soul growth and evolution, a feeling of connection, and an exchange of love. Twin flame relationships require soul growth and evolution and involve a connection that is everlasting, whether you are together or not.

The true purpose of a Twin Flame relationship is to create space and opportunities for the other to transform and accelerate personal and spiritual growth.

Ayurveda describes the entire physical world in terms of five elements: Air, Ether, Fire, Water, and Earth. Each element has their own particular qualities:

Air: dry, cold, rough, and full of motion Ether: vast, cold, light, and clear Fire: hot, subtle, mobile, dry, and sharp Water: cold, mobile, heavy, soft, and liquid Earth: cold, heavy, solid, stable, and dry

These five elements clearly manifest individually in the natural world, but they also all exist at all times in all things, including the body, and each has its particular role to play.

The Doshas According to Ayurveda, there are three Doshas; Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. We are all born with our own unique combination of these three energies, with one or two predominating. This is known as our prakriti. Determining your prakriti requires an assessment of your most natural state. Consider your physical structure, as well as your mental and emotional tendencies.

What are your qualities and tendencies - physically, mentally, and emotionally? Do you have a predominance of one of these Doshas? Or can you see yourself in all three? You can take an online quiz to help determine your prakriti. Try this one from Joyful Belly: https://www.joyfulbelly.com/Ayurveda/body-type/Dosha-Quiz

The more you observe the subtle qualities in your body, the more flexibility you’ll have in your day to day choices. We are continually changing and renewing, and the body’s capacity to regenerate itself is what allows healing to happen. By tuning in and feeling what is happening inside your body on a daily basis, you can make changes to your diet and lifestyle to encourage your own unique state of balance.

Embracing seasonal change Each season has its associated Dosha, with those particular Dosha qualities being more dominant at that time. Late Winter to early Spring is Kapha, late Spring to Summer is Pitta, and Fall to early Winter is Vata. As we are entering Fall here in the Northern Hemisphere, let’s take a look at how Vata is influencing us and how we can work with this particular energy to keep us grounded and move through this transition with ease. As the seasons shift from summer to fall we can feel that the nights are getting colder, we see the leaves on the trees drying up and falling to the ground, and we can feel the wind gathering its strength, whispering that winter is on its way. These are signs of Vata in nature, but similar signs may also be appearing in our minds and bodies, such as dry skin and hair, cracking joints, wandering thoughts, and restless sleep. Remembering that Vata is composed of cold, dry, and rough qualities, with lots of movement, we want to bring in the opposite qualities to help us feel stable and grounded.

Try incorporating some (or all!) of the following tips to maintain a sense of balance over the upcoming weeks:

Eat foods that are warm, well-cooked, well-spiced, and oily Use spices that are warming, like ginger, turmeric, cardamom, cumin, and cinnamon

Drink lots of warm liquids to prevent dehydration, like lemon water and ginger tea Eat more of the sweet, sour, and salty tastes Dress in layers and keep your home well heated with enough humidity Give yourself a daily warm-oil massage with sesame oil Gently rub a drop of sesame oil inside your nasal passages to prevent dryness Meditate daily to keep the mind sharp and focused Practice restorative yoga Go to bed early to ensure you get enough rest

Having a regular, daily routine can make all the difference in keeping Vata balanced. Get up and go to bed at the same time each day, eat your meals on the same schedule with lunch being the biggest meal of the day, and plan time for exercise, rest, and relaxation. Taking the time to nourish your mind, body, and spirit, will help you to feel more energized and centred, ready to embrace this shift in seasons.

Toxic Masculinity: Men’s Emotional Taboo By: Chris Lee

“Boy….you better not cry! I’ll take my belt off right here in front of all these people.”

I was about 10 years old and had just lost a very competitive and bitterly contested basketball game. I had played my heart out, but the other team was just better. That loss hurt. My father’s stern admonition also hurt. I was starting to cry because I was frustrated and exasperated. Instead of expressing those emotions I internalized them under threat of corporal punishment.

That interaction between my father and I was not uncommon. Many of the behaviours that we exhibit, both as a child and as a parent, are “learned.” One of the ways that we exhibit learned behaviours is by modeling. My father was probably modeling behaviours that he experienced himself.

This is how toxic behaviours get passed along. When we see any behavioural pattern repeated over and over, it becomes automatic or unconscious - that is, we are no longer as consciously aware of these behaviours or their effects.

Traditionally, men are only allowed to express a very short list of emotions: joy and anger. Ok, I’m exaggerating of course but you get the idea.

A 2017 study conducted by researchers at the University

of California Berkeley discovered that humans experience 27 different emotions. So what happens when our belief system causes us to believe that only a few emotions are acceptable to exhibit, or better yet, are acceptable to admit to experiencing? What happens to emotions that get internalized?

In the book “The Power of Infinite Love & Gratitude: An Evolutionary Journey to Awaken Your Spirit,” emotions:

author Dr. Darren Weissman writes about the effects of unprocessed and internalized “When emotions are internalized it impedes the Chi or energy flow in the body and

increases the amount of pressure needed to move energy through your body. If unchecked, this begins to affect the physical body, especially the cardiovascular system.”

In simple terms, internalized and unprocessed emotions ultimately lead to physical dis-ease. Most men were raised to be tough, not to show emotions, and to “soldier on” no matter what. In view of the above statement from Dr. Weissman, coupled with the fact that the leading cause of death among men according to the Center for Disease Control, is heart disease, we’ve got some healing to do!

Salutations to the Guru By: Premadasa Gangadeen

realize that this stream of devotion, life perfection, and love was seeded within us all and it was allowed to bud, what would life look and feel like? I believe that this is what is known as bliss and I also believe that bliss only comes through a descent of Grace and Its vehicle is through the Guru.

For me the concept and feeling of Guru invokes a sense of boundless peace, love, truth, awareness, and bliss. I consider myself to be most fortunate and I have a lot of gratitude for the gift of a close personal relationship with my late beloved Guru, Pandit Rameshwar Shastri, for close to 20 years. Through what I’ll say was a descent of Grace, I was able to receive, feel, and retain as much as I was able to from the lessons we shared on the Bhagavad Gita and other Hindu epics and scriptures, the teachings of Yoga, Hindi and Sanskrit, and his consistent daily routine to keep his overall fitness of body, mind, and spirit. My time with him was more precious than any material good that I had and more prestigious than any University that I could think of attending. I owe so much to him in my life for being my guide as we swam in the same vast ocean waters toward

I would liken the lineage of teachings going back from my Guru’s teacher to his teacher’s teacher, and so on, to the branches of a purified and sanctified stream with its ice-capped origin being at the peak of the highest and holiest of mountains on the planet. To drink from its waters would be to receive the greatest amount of clarity, purification, and awareness available. My Guru had many students all over the world, as he had been teaching and travelling to do so for what I imagine to be around 70 years and each one would hold the same amount of reverence for him, demonstrating that he had magnificent influence. To my knowledge I was among his last students, the last charge of his dharma as a teacher of Yoga. The

actually means to be heavy-weighted, as its meaning comes with deep karmic and dharmic responsibility - to guide the student toward greater realization of themselves, ultimately leading to an enlightened experience of truth, consciousness, and bliss, otherwise known as Satchidananda. It may be easier conceptually to consider a Guru to be a teacher or teaching, which comes through nature with the intention of vibrating or resonating this state of absolute truth, consciousness, and bliss to the observer. Consider various spiritual traditions throughout time using aspects of nature like the sun, stars, water, or the earth as a representation of being a source of life. Sit within that observation for a little while and perhaps an intrinsic recognition of the Guru within will awaken.

next to a warm and gentle fire on a cold, dark night. ‘Gu’ means darkness and ‘ru’ means to remove, in terms of spiritual ignorance, thus enlightenment ensues as long as one remains connected to the Guru. During the brightest full-moon of the year, which usually occurs around mid-late July, Hindus and Yoga students alike view this moon as the Guru Moon, or Guru Poornima. Through the Guru’s teachings, a light is shone on one’s ego, which is said to be an obstacle to recognizing one’s true nature. These teachings represent an effort to transform one’s self-centred nature to a more universal nature of all-inclusivity or simply Oneness. The seat or abode of the Guru lies within the crown chakra and can be heard internally through subtle sounds or even via the deep silence and stillness that comes within meditation. If a Guru initiates a disciple into the usage of a mantra, the connection and even presence of the Guru will be felt whenever the mantra is chanted, be it internally or externally.

A clear and obvious next question may be something like, how do I get a Guru? The truth is that I don’t

know of any particular method. What I can tell you is that I experienced a time in my life similar to what may be known as an existential crisis where I did not feel grounded at all. This was due to my ignorance of not knowing much about my cultural heritage as a Hindu descendant being raised in Canada by a West Indian family who were at least three generations removed from Mother India. I felt a deep yearning for that connection to the root of my ancestry to truly understand, own, and develop a sense of pride of where I came from instead of identifying with the lingering

I took the phone number and eagerly called the person to whom I was referred. When I first called my soonto-be Guru, a young voice answered the phone and we shortly spoke as though I was being vetted before I was placed on hold. A few moments later a gentle voice came on the other end and as I explained myself leading up to how I came to this very moment, it occurred to me at once that my search was over even though I wasn’t exactly clear on what I was searching for.

It’s been a little over a year now since my Guru has left his body, though I do not feel the absence of his presence. As our time together wore on, I began to practically realize the Guru Tattwa or Guru Principle through him: the passage from the ignorance of egoism toward Self-realization through Nature as it creates, sustains, and destroys all life in both the inner and outer worlds. My initial yearning which led to my meeting of my Guru, opened the gateway of Yoga, putting me in deeper connection with many great lineages, realized masters of Yoga, and a great community, allowing me to deepen and enrich my study, practice, and teaching of Yoga over the past 20+ years. My story here is not very special, as I simply searched for and uncovered the seed within, which needed to be nourished in order to flourish to what it is today. My life is richer for it and my goal is to show others that theirs can be as well as a living example and tribute to my beloved Guru.

October Reading with Intuitive Goddess Priya Waking the Lion

As we move through the fall, the message from the Guides is an invitation to wake the lion rather than prepare for hibernation. You are being encouraged to face fears and move beyond your comfort zones. While they sense you are nervous about taking risks, they encourage you to exercise faith that all is well and will continue on that way.

For some of you, the message comes from the Guides sensing that you are afraid to shine at your brightest. They encourage you to tap into your inner strength. Those who will benefit from your light are waiting for you and the gifts you have to offer. Find the courage to move through your fears of failure and judgement by focusing on how much your gifts and contributions can benefit you and many others.

For some of you, the message is to stop waiting for perfect conditions to make changes or move forward. Perfection is an illusion and there will never be a perfect time. Instead focus on recognizing that once you focus on your desires and hold your faith, everything will always work out. Although there will be bumps on the road along your journey, the Guides ask you to receive comfort and reassurance in knowing that you are always divinely supported.

Allow yourself to awaken from within and feel free and assured to shine your brightest light.

In joy and light, Intuitive Goddess Priya

Any Questions? By: Priya Ali

Have you ever been out driving and gotten lost before? You followed your GPS, but she just kept sending you in circles? It seemed like the only choice was to stop and ask for directions? You finally find someone and ask, “Can you please tell me why I’m lost? Why did I listen to my GPS three times after I knew it was continuously sending me the wrong way? What’s wrong with me? Why don’t I know the way?”

Probably not the line of questioning you used, right? It was likely more along the lines of, “Can you please tell me how to get to my destination from here?” Doesn’t it make more sense to ask questions that will lead you to what you truly wish to know, or where you wish to go?

When we ask a question, our brain is stimulated and serotonin is released. This release of serotonin causes the brain to relax and makes it most able to find answers and develop solutions. There is a rush of dopamine when these conditions are set, so the brain can respond to the question. This can lead to one of two things happening: It can prompt us to enter a state of fear of giving the wrong answer or trigger our reward mechanism, leading us to go in search of the answer. When our brain goes in search of an answer, it cannot contemplate anything else.

Often times we pose questions to ourselves, such as, “What’s wrong with me? Am I going to be alone forever? Why do I keep ending up in debt? Asking these types of questions sends your brain searching for answers to these exact questions and keeps you from reaching answers that bring about solutions or create pathways to change.

Instead of, “What’s wrong with me?”, you could try, “What changes could I make that would help me change this situation or create my desired outcome?” Instead of, “Am I going to be alone forever?”, you could try, “What would it take for me to meet someone or spend more time with others?” Instead of, “Why do I keep ending up in debt?”, you could try, “How can I reduce my debt load and increase my savings?”

When you focus your questions towards solutions or a desired result, you will begin to change your thought patterns. As Einstein said, “We can’t solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.” Start asking questions that will lead you to answers that will help lead you to a solution or knowledge and align you with the energy of the solution rather than the energy of the problem. Any questions?
