Lampeter-Strasburg

In December 2022, LampeterStrasburg School District broke its record for the number of donations collected during its annual Toys for Tots toy drive. This was the 16th year that the school district participated in the national charity program, and 1,837 toys in total were collected from various local schools.

Although the toys are not collected until December, the LampeterStrasburg administration begins preparing for the drive months in advance. Each school in the district participates, and classes are incentivized to collect the highest number of donations with a prize such as a doughnut party. The delicious treats do motivate students to participate, but Lampeter-Strasburg program specialists Kara Grove and Jackie

Potter said that for many, assisting with the drive is its own reward.

Dressed as elves and snowmen, Grove and Potter made videos to promote the drive, and the collection boxes were placed in prominent

Submissions may be artwork in any medium, such as photography, sculpture, painting or collage, and both professional and amateur artists of any age are

Students were also able to track the number of toys collected through an interactive meter that Grove and Potter introduced, and the meter was tied into mathematics and graphing lessons. “It became a daily check-in with the toy meter,” said Potter. “It

As the collection date drew closer, schools incorporated the collection progress in daily announcements. Students began to work together with their families, shopping for toys with their parents, aunts, uncles and grandparents and discussing in their own homes how to best support the drive and give back to those in need over Christmastime. Students who were unable to donate assisted in other ways, such as collecting, counting and organizing the donations.

Toys for Tots will often recognize a participant in the drive who is exceedingly passionate about the project. This year, the Marine Corps presented Lampeter-Strasburg High School sophomore Liliana Bacon with a certificate of recognition for collecting over 270 donations on her own.

Grace Community Church, 212 Peach Bottom Road, Willow Street, will begin hosting weekly GriefCare sessions beginning on Monday, Feb. 27. Sessions will be held every Monday from 6:30 to 8 p.m., and the program will conclude on Monday, April 17.

for the exhibit.

“ We were especially excited this year because it was the Marines’ 75th year running (Toys for Tots),” said Potter. “I was really blown away and surprised; it was a coming together of the community.”

On collection day, students from the high school’s Pioneer Interact Club and representatives of the Marine Corps bagged the donations. The volunteers drove a school bus to each school to pick up the piles of toys and counted the total number of gifts. Once each pile was collected and counted, the gifts were loaded onto the Marine Corps’ trailer and delivered to the Toys for Tots distribution center. “We collected so many toys that by the time we visited the last school, we couldn’t even sit comfortably in the bus because of how crammed it was,” said Grove. “It was really special to see how many people gave, even during hard times.”

The school district plans to hold the toy drive again next year and hopes to collect just as many, if not more, donations. Information on how to participate will be posted at www.l-spioneers.org.

The GriefCare program will use biblical concepts to help those struggling with significant loss and grief. Methods for expressing and coping with grief will be tied directly to Scripture and faith-based concepts. Each session will include videos that address different topics, which will be followed by group discussion facilitated by a lay person from the church. Participants will receive a workbook that they may take home and use between meetings.

“Each session, we use Scripture to understand grief, loss and the hope available to us,” said Jesse Bills, pastor of dis-

Trauma Informed Initiative

Posted

The City of Lancaster announced the launch of its Trauma Informed Community Initiative in partnership with Penn Medicine

Lancaster General Health. Free trainings will be held monthly through May.

A trauma-informed community is one that establishes and promotes healing so that people can be healthy enough to sustain opportunity and realize their full potential. Penn Medicine

Lancaster General Health will provide trainings for organizations and companies, and the City of Lancaster will offer trainings for Lancaster residents so that together people can build a traumainformed community.

Trainings will include an overview of trauma and its impact on a person, as well as resiliency, withstanding crises and coping effectively with trauma. Additional trainings will be available to help residents train their neighbors and their networks on trauma-informed principles.

Advance registration is required. To register or learn more, visit www.city oflancasterpa.gov/trauma.

cipleship at Grace Community Church. “It’s also a place that community can be built. We share what we’re struggling with, but we also bond with each other and build relationships. It’s ultimately a place to create joy and healing.”

This is the second year of the GriefCare program, which was inspired by GriefShare, a similarly motivated program. Bills and the biblical counseling department at Grace Community Church wanted to offer something that was less intensive than GriefShare, so that those who cannot commit to a 13-week-long program would still have a place to meet and access resources to deal with loss.

“Thirteen weeks is a big commitment from people; we thought (GriefCare) would be a little less daunting,” said Bills. “It works better with some people’s schedules, as well as our other programs offered through the church.”

Bills feels that programs like GriefCare are more important now than ever. Over the course of the last few years, one of

many challenges that people weathered was isolation. Normal opportunities to grieve such as funerals were unavailable for a duration of time, resulting in a lingering need to process grief and connect with others. “It’s been really detrimental,” said Bills. “It’s important to speak about these things and find the healing that’s available.” GriefCare was largely successful in its first year; almost 20 participants joined the group

and continued to meet even after the final session.

Grace Community Church offers several other programs for the community, the largest of which is the men’s and women’s ministry. This year, the ministry will begin meeting on Monday, Feb. 6, and will include small group discussion and biblical lessons.

To register for GriefCare, call 717-464-5333 or visit www.gccws.net.

Bowlers Holding Down Top Spot in Section 3

Lampeter-Strasburg’s bowling team, after posting four straight shutouts, earned a solid 5-2 win over Section Two foe Elizabethtown last Monday, January 16. Two days later, the Pioneers win streak came to a halt as Garden Spot avenged its 7-0 defeat back in December with a 4-3 win at Dutch Lanes.

Behind a 221 from Ethan Snyder and a 214 by Katie Pope the Pioneers earned a tight 898-863 first game win over the Bears and did even better in the second game, winning 928-779 with Snyder and Maddux Harsh rolling 202 and 204 respectively.

The Bears regrouped, winning the third game by 56 pins but it wasn’t enough as the Pioneers also won the total pin count.

Snyder’s 642 was the high series of the day with Pope just four pins off a 600. Harsh (546) and Peter Mecouch (492) followed with Scott Armstrong and Jack Ross teaming for a 435.

“That was a good win,” said head coach John Achille. “Beating Cocalico 7-0 twice was also good. This was up there as a big win.”

On the road Wednesday the Pioneers got off to a slow start, which proved costly. Spot won the first game by 89 pins and the second by 82 before L-S caught fire. All five bowlers rolled in the 200’s with Harsh leading the way with 255. They crushed the hosts 1148- 850 and picked up another point with total pins, 2794-2667.

“ We beat them 7-0 the first time but they were missing a couple bowlers,” noted Achille. “We missed too many spares that we have consistently been making. We’re neck and neck with Central. This one could come back to bite us.

“On the plus side, our third

game was unbelievable,” he added. “That game has to be a school record.”

Pope’s 643 series was a team high.

The Pioneers are currently 45-11 with Manheim sitting at 40-9.

SWIMMING

The L-S boys, claiming six of the 11 events, improved to 3-2 overall with a 76-74 thriller against Manheim Central last Tuesday, Jan. 17, at the Lititz Rec Center.

“It was exciting,” said head coach Kylie Hearn. “All eight boys contributed. They swam fast and competed together. They had ten season bests and eight were personal records.

“It came down to the last relay,” she added. “Jaydon Groff, Karim Al Kurdi, Noah Staley and Adam Zook did what they needed to do, completed the event and added points to the team score. The boys have created a special bond and unite during each meet.”

Christian Rota was the top point-getter, winning the 50 and 500 free events. He also anchored the winning 200 medley with Ryan Smecker, Kyle Spaulding and Matt Rota leading the way.

Spaulding, second in the 100 free, claimed the 200 free. Rota, who was second in the 100 breaststroke, claimed the 100 fly and Smecker was tops in the 200 IM.

The girls’ team used its depth to blow past the Lady Barons 110-39.

Kylie Gerhardt (100 back, 100 fly) and Madelyn Juba (100 and 200 free) both won two events and contributed to the relay sweep. They both joined Zara Paisley and Ashley Prouse to take the 200 free. Juba also anchored the 400 free with Prouse, Grace

Schonour and Claire Eckert leading the way and Gerhardt opened the 200 medley with Paisley, Prouse and Eckert bringing home the win. Prouse also claimed the 500 free.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

With a pair of road wins, the girls’ basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak with a key 44-34 result at Northern Lebanon Friday, Jan. 13 and remained one game behind section leader Lancaster Catholic with a 48-34 effort last Tuesday.

Katie Ranck recorded a triple double with 16 points, 13 rebounds and 10 blocked shots in the Pioneers win over the Vikings. Anna Horner netted 12 of her 14 points in the f ourth quarter when L-S outscored the hosts 14-7 to pull away.

“It was 20-19 at the half and then we just started making shots and we attacked the offensive glass,” said head coach Steve Villbrandt. “Ranck and Ava Leonard were cleaning up the rebounds on both ends.”

On the road again Tuesday, Jan. 17, Ranck poured in a team-high 18 points, Horner followed with an even dozen, hitting three of Lampeter’s six treys, to lead the way.

L-S got out to a 24-17 first half and plowed through the second half with the same result.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

After suffering not only a tough defeat to Octorara but losing starter Ben Wert (knee injury) for the season, the Pioneers regrouped. With a total team effort that included ten players contributing to the point total, the home team crushed Northern Lebanon 52-23.

“It was a good win. The guys worked hard, and everyone contributed,” said head coach Ed Berryman. “It was a good confidence booster after a tough loss.”

With Chase Smucker drilling three treys and a jumper, the Pioneers bolted to a 19-5 first quarter lead and never looked back. They led 29-8 at halftime and put the game out of reach when Smucker popped another ten

of his teams 15 for a commanding 44-13 advantage.

The sophomore point guard led the way with 21 points.

Trent Wagner added six and Luke Hines five with Yasin Abdi, Justin Glick and Brady Grau scoring four points each.

Tim Holmes, Dean Herr, Connor Kourterick, and Christian Nolt added two apiece.

At home again Tuesday, Jan. 17, the hosts got off to a sluggish start but finished strong. Clinging to a 9-8 first

quarter lead, L-S outpointed Cocalico 16-6 in the second frame and took the second half 22-19 for a 47-33 victory.

The Pioneers dropped six treys on the night, held the Eagles to two and 11-of-20 free throws to stay in front.

Smucker and Judah White were the only double figure scorers with 12 each. Hines and Abdi combined for 16 as L-S moved to 11-3 overall and kept pace with Octorara, both sitting at 5-1 in Section Three.

encouraged to participate.

All artwork is free to submit, and artists may submit any number of pieces. Mulberry Art Studios will accept

five to eight pieces of artwork per adult and three pieces per child.

The only criterion for submissions is that they depict an animal that would reasonably be kept as a pet, meaning that pieces that portray fictional and undomesticated animals will not be accepted. “It doesn’t have to be your pet specifically, but it has to be reasonable,” said Stephanie Kulfan, gallery curator at Mulberry Art Studios.

“It’s supposed to be a celebration of our love of animals and their significance in our lives.”

Mulberry Art Studios created “ We Love Our Pets” five years ago, after gallery owner April Koppenhaver experienced two significant losses in her life. Koppenhaver’s husband, Charles Gaul, and her beagle mix, Milo, both passed away within a month of each other, and Koppenhaver and Kulfan wanted to create a way to honor them. They decided to start an annual community art show that would be centered around pets and that would benefit an animal rescue in the area. Each year, Mulberry Art Studios supports the Sebastian Foundation for Animal Rescue by donating a portion of all art sales from the exhibit. On opening night, members of the Sebastian Foundation will have a table at the studio to accept donations, and several vendors will be present to sell pet-related items.

Last year, 162 pieces were accepted from over 100 artists from across the county. Many art teachers even incorporated the show into their curriculum, helping students to create artwork of their beloved pets to submit for the show.

Although the show began prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Kulfan believes that the struggles of the pandemic made many people realize how much they appreciated their animals. “Everyone was spending more time at home and realized how much having animal companions helped us,” said Kulfan. “People realized the comfort that animals give you.”

To submit a piece of artwork for the show, email Kulfan at Stephanie.Mulberry Art@gmail.com.

English Country Dance Lessons Planned

Historic Rock Ford’s Historic Dance troupe will offer introductory English country dance lessons from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursdays, Feb. 2, Feb. 16, March 2 and March 16. The program will be held on the first floor of the barn at Historic Rock Ford, 881 Rockford Road, Lancaster. English country dances, once popular in Great Britain and the United States, range from slow-paced dances to more lively ones.

The lessons are intended for individuals who have little or no English country dance

experience and who are interested in volunteering at Historic Rock Ford as members of the Historic Dance troupe. Historic Rock Ford dancer membership requirements will be emailed to enrollees prior to the first introductory lesson.

There is no fee to participate, and attendees do not need to bring a partner. They should wear comfortable, soft-soled shoes and ordinary casual clothes, and layers are recommended. They may also bring a bottle of water.

To sign up, email modern baker@gmail.com.

Looking back on a Winter Field Day event, Ralph Hess, president of Red Rose Repeater Association (RRR), recalled a story about a gentleman, a newcomer to the hobby, who helped him set up antennas for amateur, ham for short, radio operation. “We got the antenna hooked to the radio, and I threw out my call sign and a (ham) got back to me from Poland,” said Hess, who added that the gentleman was astounded. “He said, ‘That piece of wire I just touched let you talk to Poland?’” Hess relayed. Hess used an internet program to confirm the contact.

The 2023 event, presented by a partnership between RRR and the Winter Field Day Association, will be held at the Welsh Mountain Community Center and Park, 564 Sandmine Road, New Holland. The group will begin to set up antennas at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 28, and the event will officially begin at 2 p.m. Winter Field Day will end at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 29. The event is held for 24 hours to include radio operators from all time zones. Newly licensed and inexperienced operators as well as those with an interest in the hobby

are encouraged to attend. There is no cost to participate, and visitors are welcome to drop in anytime and bring sleeping bags or cots if they plan to stay overnight in the center.

Several seminars will be offered during the event. At 10 a.m. on Jan. 28, Amateur Radio Emergency Services (ARES) will give a presentation. Hess noted that the organization practices emergency drills for the closed Three Mile Island and the functioning Peach Bottom nuclear power plants because ham radios continue to operate when cellphones cannot and in areas where cell services may be limited.

Additional workshops will instruct attendees in how to build three types of two-meter antennas and one HF (high frequency) antenna. There is a nominal fee to build antennas to cover the costs of materials.

Presently, there are 50 licensed ham radio operators in the New Holland ZIP code and more than 1,500 in the county. Hess believes a chance to converse internationally attracts many to the hobby. “We will be operating under our club call sign, so … anybody can come up and operate,” he said. “I can almost guarantee we will find someone outside the U.S. to talk to.” Hess noted that many visitors react positively to hearing a voice from another country over the radio. “People’s faces just light up,” he said.

New Make-A-Wish Fund Launched

Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware & Susquehanna Valley recently launched the Sapphire Fund. The Sapphire Fund will financially support the wishes of children with a cancer diagnosis in the Philadelphia, Delaware, and Susquehanna Valley region.

The largest number of wishes granted each year by the chapter are for children with a cancer diagnosis. On average, 60% of the wishes granted each year will now be funded by the Sapphire Fund. Annually, $800,000 is needed to financially support these wishes. The name of the Sapphire Fund was inspired by the birthstone for the month of September, as September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.
