Jack Harnish, Future Music Educator BY COURTNEY MENGEL

ack Harnish, a senior at Lampeter-Strasburg High School (LSHS), is one of 25 students from Pennsylvania who was selected to attend the 2022 Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) Future Music Educators Honors Symposium. This program is for high school seniors who have been accepted at a college or university to study music education. To qualify, students must be in high academic standing, participate in music activities and courses, be active in the community, and possess leadership experience. At the symposium, Harnish was given the opportunity to attend seminars related to the topic of music education and make connections with college music education majors and professional educators. The symposium ran concurrently with the 2022 PMEA All-State Festival, which took

It costs Good Samaritan Services (GSS) $35 to provide a night of shelter, two meals, supplies, and compassionate care to an individual. That is about one-third the cost of a hotel per night. vice president of Tri-M Music Honor Society and a member of the esports team. He sings in chorus, plays tennis, and participates in the jazz ensemble, pit orchestra, and orchestra. For the past two years, he’s been in marching band. Harnish said that he wishes he could have spent more time with the marching band, but he hopes to join West Chester’s marching band as a college student. Over the years, Harnish has played in several orchestra ensembles outside of school and noted that Brian Norcross, the director of Allegro Orchestra Lancaster, is one of his inspirations to pursue music education in addition to LSHS band director Larry Royer and LSHS orchestra director Robert Shaubach. PMEA is a statewide nonprofit organization of over 4,000 members dedicated to promoting the musical development of all Pennsylvanians. To learn more about PMEA, visit www.pmea.net.

After graduating from LSHS, Harnish plans to attend West Chester University in the fall, where he will study music education. He said he would be happy teaching any grade level but would prefer to instruct high school students. His sister, who is six years older than him, played the violin, so he had some exposure to string instruments before picking up the bass as a fourth-grader. He started taking private lessons in seventh grade, and at a concert in eighth grade, he performed a solo with the orchestra accompanying him. “I kind of wish I could do that solo again because I could play it a lot better now, but I’m still really grateful that I had the opportunity to play in front of a big audience like that,” explained Harnish. Currently, GSS owns 14 properties, totaling 100 beds and over 30,000 square feet. GSS came to the Lancaster County area in 2011 when it opened an emergency shelter in Ephrata, which provides housing for women and children. GSS provides a full continuum of care to individuals and families that are experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness. Some of the services offered by GSS include eviction prevention, case management services, emergency shelter, transitional housing, affordable housing, and permanent housing services across Lancaster and Chester counties. The organization’s end goal is to empower people to feel confident and capable enough to maintain their own safe and stable housing. Ninety-seven percent of GSS’ funding comes from community donations and fundraisers such as the annual Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) Golf Outing. The 15th annual EPC Golf Outing will take place on Friday, June 10, at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland Pass, Millersville, with tee times at 7 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Meals, beverages, and snacks will be provided, and participants will have chances to win prizes throughout the golf course. As the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania prepares to celebrate its 300th anniversary, students across the state are invited to participate in the historic occasion by participating in an essay and coloring contest. Both contests are free and open to Pennsylvania students, including those in public, private, charter, cybercharter, or home school. The deadline for entries is Friday, May 6. The coloring contest is open to students ages 5 to 11 and will give young students the opportunity to create their own judge. After printing the cartoon judge cutouts, students can choose which judge they want to color and design using their creativity as their guide. NOBLE ROAD GREENHOUSE

Friday & Saturday,

Young Scientists Honored At Competition A total of over 200 students from 23 Lancaster County schools entered projects in the 2022 North Museum Science and Engineering Fair for judging by 82 STEM-related professionals from dozens of local companies. The sevenththrough 12th-grade students’ competition included months of research, virtual presentation of their entries and inperson judges’ interviews with the finalists. The North Museum Science and Engineering Fair is affiliated with the International Science and Engineering Fair. Through sponsors such as Amazon, Eurofins, Deb Ehleiter/Thrivent Financial, Corteva, Electron Energy Corporation and Johnson & Johnson, the fair is free to participants. See Young Scientists pg 14

sheds and DeWalt tools will be sold. Food for purchase at the auction will include chicken barbecue meals and pulled pork sandwiches, along with a variety of other foods. Over the decades, Ronald McDonald House, located within walking distance of Penn State Health Children’s Hospital, has served countless families. Once the facility was expanded in 2010, the auction committee agreed to shift support to operations of the house, explained Amy Leonard, development director with Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Pennsylvania. Leonard noted that the house is slowly reopening following the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions and that 28 bedrooms are open, along with community

areas and dining facilities. Over the years, the fundraiser has brought in more than $1 million for the cause, and Smucker is looking forward to making this year’s event a success. “We are hoping people didn’t forget about (the auction),” he said. “I am hoping people will come out.” Donations will be accepted until Monday, May 23. Readers who would like to donate may email aleonard@rmhc -centralpa.org or call 717-5334001, ext. 156.

When Michael Leader, a longtime member of the board of directors of Ronald McDonald House in Hershey, wrote to Moses Smucker of Narvon in January of 2008, he was asking for help. Leader knew that Smucker had organized the auction for the Nicholas Stoltzfus House project in Wyomissing, and he was wondering if Smucker would lend his talents to a similar event for “a very good cause.” Ronald McDonald House provides services free of charge to families of children being treated at Penn State Health Children’s Hospital. In 2008, the house required a $4 million expansion, which would add 15 rooms for a

total of 35. The Plain community of Lancaster County had utilized the house often, and Smucker responded to Leader’s letter by holding a meeting at his house in March of 2008. The first Lancaster County Community Auction to benefit Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Pennsylvania was held on May 2, 2009. After a two-year hiatus, the 12th Lancaster County Community Auction will be held at the White Horse Fire Company, 111 White Horse Road, Gap, on Tuesday, May 24, beginning at 11 a.m. The traditional country “bring something, buy something” format will feature quilts, antiques, toys, crafts, garden items, furniture, quilts, and more. As Aaron’s Acres grows and moves forward, the goal is to increase meaningful programming to support more individuals with disabilities and their families. In keeping with this goal, Aaron’s Acres has announced a new partnership with the Chuckie Magee Flag Football and Cheerleading League for participants with disabilities ages 21 to 40, which will begin in August. He was a camper for many years but passed away in 2015 at age 23. Football games and cheerleading will occur on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon starting Aug. 13. There will be 10 games throughout the fall season. Games will take place at Manheim Brethren in Christ Church. The program accepts adults ages 21 to 40 with varying abilities and disabilities. Registration will begin during the summer. There is no fee to register.
