Capturing a winning image

Combining his love of nature and his photography skills, Elverson resident Mark Lucas was able to capture the winning photograph in a contest presented by the Pennsylvania Parks and Forests Foundation. Lucas won the Judge’s Choice Award in the Forests category of the contest, which had nearly 600 entries.

Lucas’ photo pictures a decaying

tree deep in the woods. The tree is covered in moss and surrounded by bright orange mushrooms. He came upon the tree while hiking in Gallitzin State Forest near his hometown. “It is located just west of a little town called Windber. It’s on the western side of the state in the heart of Appalachia,” Lucas explained. “It’s about 80 miles east of Pittsburgh, and it’s about a three-hour-and-15 minute drive (from Elverson). My family is still there, and I (visit) for the holidays.”

Twin Valley students spread kindness rocks

Peoplewho live in the Twin Valley area should be on the lookout for kindness rocks that were created by second-grade students at Twin Valley Elementary Center (TVEC). The rocks, which have been decorated with bright colors and inspirational messages, all include the hashtag #BeKindTV.

The rocks were painted during a Valentine’s Day party held at TVEC on Feb. 17 that was hosted by homeroom moms Kristin Inman and Lana Pellegrino. “I plan the parties with (Pellegrino) and I wanted this to be a kindness party, and I wanted to involve the community,” said Inman.

After receiving approval from the school principal and homeroom teacher, Inman set out on a mission to find rocks, including searching for them while wading in the cold

waters of French Creek at Warwick County Park.

Eventually, she asked if any were available free of charge on the “Twin Valley Gift and Take” Facebook page. “I was on a budget. I used Facebook and went to Gift and Take and asked if anybody had any flat river rocks to donate,” Inman explained. “A woman from that group messaged me. She said that at her cabin there are hundreds of these rocks, and she grabbed some for me. They were flat and smooth; they were just perfect.”

The students decorated about 40 rocks using acrylic paint pens at the party, which also featured a lesson about kindness. “(We talked with the students about) what kindness means to them and (asked them) to give examples of what it meant to be kind,” said Inman, noting that prizes were awarded for winning answers.

“We showed them the rocks and

told them that we want to spread kindness into the community.”

Those who find a rock are asked to post a photo of it on the “In Twin Valley” Facebook page, along with the hashtag. Then, they may keep the rock or place it at another location. “I placed (the rocks) at various local businesses, and I took pictures and posted clues,” Inman pointed out.

So far, the rocks have been found at a local day care center, a dentist’s office, a veterinarian’s office, a church, a car wash, several restaurants, the Village Library of Morgantown and the Elverson Post Office. “My whole goal was to get the kids involved in a community activity and to promote and highlight local businesses,” said Inman. “(It has been) a nice community project and (a way to) teach the kids that a little kindness can go a long way.”

VITA offers free tax preparation services

As tax filing season approaches, Chester County residents are reminded that their taxes can be prepared free of charge through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program, which is offered locally by Life Transforming Ministries (LTM).

“VITA is an amazing program offered by the IRS to partners, such as LTM. (It gives LTM) the opportunity to offer free federal and state tax preparation for low- to moderate-income households in our

communities,” said Donna Laird, LTM VITA administration support. “By low, we mean those making around $70,000 or less, yet our goal is to offer service to anyone who needs help. Tax returns are electronically prepared and filed at no cost to the taxpayer. Every site is run by volunteers who are trained and certified by the IRS.”

LTM’s VITA program began in 2004 in Coatesville. “We did 15 paper returns that year,” Laird said. “Last year, we were able to put $5.4 million back into the community by submitting over 2,600 tax returns.”

LaManna uses education in insurance career

Penn State Berks alumna Britany LaManna, who earned a degree in communication arts and sciences in 2012, has parlayed the knowledge and skills she acquired at the college into a career in the insurance industry. She was recognized as a Rising Star in the field by Insurance Business America magazine in December 2022, and she was named to the Millionaires Club 2022 for The Loomis Co., where she has worked for the last 11 years. This award recognizes her success in producing more than $1 million in new property and casualty premiums.

LaManna began her career at The Loomis Co., a national insurance brokerage firm headquartered in Wyomissing, just a few weeks after her college graduation in 2012.

Photography contest

Lucas entered the photography contest at the suggestion of a friend. “Someone who knows that I do photography on the side sent me a link; otherwise I would have never known,” he said. “Coincidentally, I had walked the trail a few months before the contest and happened to get a lot of decent pictures. There was one that was different than what I normally do, and that picture came to mind. I never expected to win, but I thought I would enter the contest and see what happens.”

The winning shot was taken while Lucas was walking along the John P. Saylor

Starting as an account executive in commercial property and casualty, LaManna rose to senior executive of strategic accounts in the same division.

Most recently, LaManna was recognized by Insurance Business America magazine in its yearly Rising Stars issue, which honored the top insurance professionals age 35 and under. The publication invited insurance professionals across the U.S. to nominate the most exceptional young talent for its annual Rising Star list. The final list of 59 Rising Stars was determined by a panel of industry leaders.

Trail, a 12-mile loop that takes him about nine hours to complete carrying only his camera equipment and water.

“I was walking the loop clockwise starting at the trailhead at the park picnicking area and happened to glance at some morning sunbeams coming through the trees to my left when I noticed the beam illuminating the bright green moss at the base of the decaying tree, along with the tiny orange mushrooms,” he recalled. “I had never seen those before. That’s what caught my eye when I was walking down the trail. When I walked over to them, I was going to take

close-ups of the mushrooms, but when I backed away, (I decided to do) more of a wide angle shot.”

He said that his photo tells the story of the tree, which was once alive but now has been reclaimed by the forest. “I decided that I needed to try to tell the story of the once-magnificent tree being reclaimed by the forest floor with the young trees in the background looking on to portray the circle of life of the forest,” Lucas shared. “I decided to take the photograph lying on the ground.”

He said that the colors found in nature came together perfectly in the image. “I wanted to give the once mighty tree a final feeling of dominance,” Lucas said. “The orange mushroom cluster, moss and exposed roots as leading lines to the decaying stump … combined with …. the blue sky offered a very nice color palette to complement the stump at its final resting place.”

Lucas received a gift card for his winning photo, which he said he will use to purchase new hiking shoes.

Freedom Life to host Daddy-Daughter Dance

The FL Kids Team at Freedom Life Church will host a Daddy-Daughter

Dance on Friday, March 17, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. The event, which will feature a ’50s Sock Hop theme, is open to girls accompanied by their fathers, grandfathers or uncles.

FL Kids director Gina Turk said this is the fifth time that the event has been hosted by the church. Because more than 260 people attended last year, the dinner and dancing portions of the ending will be separated.

“It was tight (last year), so we are going to have dinner and dessert downstairs in the large auditorium and the dance party in the elementary auditorium,” she said. “For dinner, it will be diner style - burgers, hot dogs and fries and ice cream bars and root beer floats for dessert.”

Attendees will enjoy games and activities throughout the evening, and there will be a photo booth available.

“We will have a DJ from the church. It will be a mixture of some old music, like from ‘Happy Days,’ and some modern stuff,” she said, adding that attendees are encouraged to dress in ’50s attire.

FL Kids at Freedom Life Church is the church’s youth

group. Parents help plan other events throughout the year, including a Fall Festival and Easter Extravaganza. This year’s Easter event is set for Saturday, April 8.

“We’re trying to reach the community in different ways.

(The Daddy-Daughter Dance) is something we look forward to every year, and it continues to grow,” said Turk. “It’s such a magical night as we watch

Frens named county solicitor

The Chester County commissioners recently approved the appointment of Colleen Frens as solicitor for the County of Chester. Frens, the former deputy county solicitor, has served as acting solicitor since July 2022, following the appointment of former solicitor Nicole Forzato to the bench of the Chester County Court of Common Pleas.

As solicitor for Chester County, Frens will provide legal counsel and opinions relative to county government operational and administrative matters, and she will

oversee the county’s team of lawyers.

Frens joined the county as assistant county solicitor in April 2021 and was named deputy county solicitor in July 2022, shortly before becoming acting solicitor. Previously, she worked as a Chester County public defender and as an associate for Lamb McErlane. Frens

also gained legal experience in the Office of the Solicitor for the U.S. Department of Labor. She is a graduate of the Temple University Beasley School of Law and has coached Temple’s School of Law national trial team. Frens lives in West Chester with her family. She enjoys cooking, hiking, and photography.

New self-care campaign posted

Chester County announced the launch of “Fresh Air, Self-Care Chesco,” a campaign that encourages residents to practice effective self-care for better health and wellness through easy outdoor activity. “Fresh Air, Self-Care Chesco” brings together the knowledge and services of the county’s Mental Health/Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities Department (MH/IDD), Health Department, Parks + Preservation, and Planning Commission. It highlights the many public outdoor settings throughout the county.

“Fresh Air, Self-Care Chesco” was born out of recommendations made by the Chester County Youth Mental Health Coalition. The coalition, consisting of state legislators, county officials,

school administrators, the Chester County Intermediate Unit (CCIU), local higher education institutions, and behavioral health providers, focused on youth mental health concerns identified by school district superintendents. One of these concerns led to establishing a family and community partnership workgroup, led by the CCIU, whose focus included ways to lower the risk of depression and promote faster stress recovery.

Chester County has a large number of outdoor resources and activities across the whole county that everyone can tap into, and all are free to use. The many trail, park, preserve, and outdoor activity resources available in Chester County can be found at www .chesco.org/fresh-air.

The Chester County 4-H Program is seeking new volunteers and 4-H clubs. 4-H is a youth development program for people ages 5 to 18. Volunteers are essential to the program and allow adults to share their hobbies with interested youths.

Projects vary widely and include sewing, arts and crafts, cooking, animal science and outdoor adventures. 4-H volunteer opportunities range from coordinating monthly club meetings to leading one-time activities and projects.

This year, tax preparation sites are located in Coatesville, Downingtown, Exton, Phoenixville, Pottstown, Royersford and West Chester. Those who take advantage of the tax services have the option to visit one of the sites, or they may share the needed forms and documents via secure email. VITA also partners with the United Way to provide “My Free Taxes,” a free, do-it-yourself online tax filing program.

For in-person filing, individuals will be asked to drop off the needed documents before the taxes are filed.

“You come in, fill out some intake paperwork and talk to

a preparer and the preparer makes sure you have (all necessary documents),” Laird explained. “All documents are scanned and the taxpayer leaves with the originals.”

After the tax return is prepared and reviewed by another volunteer, the taxes are ready to be filed. “They can come back in or choose to sign electronically,” Laird noted.

For complete details, including a list of VITA office locations, visit www.Chester CountyFreeTaxes.org. Individuals with questions may also contact Laird at dlaird@QuietRevolution.org or 610-380-9099.

Many people have great demands on their time, so it is a good idea to develop strategies for managing time effectively. It can be especially important for students to improve their time management skills early in their academic careers. They may consider using the following strategies.

It is important to establish a daily schedule. Staying the course may require guidelines detailing how one will spend his or her time. A large portion of the day may be taken up by classes and assignments, but students should also plan the other parts of the day. Specific times should be blocked off for exercise, meals, school, study, and any other responsibilities. Students may consider using time blocking, a technique in which one organizes his or her activities by the hour or

another set amount of time.

Another strategy is to figure out where time is being lost. People need to know how they are currently spending their time before they can improve their time management skills. Making a time log over the course of a few days may help to determine if a person is working efficiently.

Time for breaks should be included in order to avoid burnout. Breaks allow students to socialize, rest or engage in other activities unrelated to school. According to sleep researcher Nathaniel Kleitman, people’s minds naturally crave breaks after 90 minutes of intense work. Each individual may need breaks at different intervals. People should learn to read their body’s cues.

Many students avoid projects that seem like huge tasks. Breaking down a larger job

into smaller ones can help students stay focused and measure their progress. For example, if a student needs to write a 50-page research paper, he or she might first find and read source material, then select facts and quotes to incorporate into the paper, and then resolve to write a set number of pages per day.

Scheduling classes wisely is another strategy. Some people are night owls while others thrive in the morning, so students should try to schedule their classes at a time when are usually very productive. This strategy may not be possible for high school students, but college students may have more flexibility in scheduling.

Time management is an important skill for students to develop. It can help in the classroom and later when entering the workforce.
