Lions To Bring Back Dinner In The Dark he Paradise Lions Club is planning its fifth Dinner in the Dark, after the 2020 event was not held due to COVID-19 restrictions. Club member Heather Valudes remembers that the group began holding the event, which gives diners a unique opportunity to experience eating a meal with limited or no vision, in 2016. The 2021 Paradise Lions Dinner in the Dark will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 3, at 6 p.m. at White Chimneys, 5117 Lincoln Highway, Gap. In addition to the meal and presentations by VisionCorps, which will benefit from the dinner, the event will include a silent auction. The silent auction will feature up to 35 items, including sports memorabilia, a chocolate basket, and a carpet cleaning kit. Valudes noted that past silent auctions have included experiences such as rides on the Strasburg Rail Road or a tour of WGAL. According to Valudes, the reception and silent auction start at 6 p.m., and the auction generally

closes at 6:55 p.m. with an announcement. Attendees will find each dinner table has a variety of blindfolds or special goggles. “VisionCorps provides goggles that mimic various types of vision impairments, such as glaucoma,” explained Valudes, who noted some goggles will be scratched and others will be blacked out in places. “So you’re eating with that impairment (during the dinner).” She noted that participants may choose whether to use a blindfold or a particular pair of goggles. “They select how they want to experience (the meal),” said Valudes. Before the meal is served, VisionCorps will give a presentation about the purpose of the nonprofit organization, which offers a variety of services to the blind and people with low vision. The organization also discusses ways to help diners negotiate the exercise of eating dinner without their normal vision. “They will give tips on how (they teach) someone who has experienced a recent vision impairment to work their way around a plate,”

“I believe that even during the darkest days of your life you can find hope in something you see that’s beautiful,” said Shira Zimmerman, director of advocates for The Factory Ministries. “Our goal is to create that everywhere you look.” On Sept. 10, Dutchland Inc. in Gap and The Factory celebrated the opening of Katie’s Courtyard, a renewed outdoor space located within the walls of the former Paradise Elementary Katie Kauffman (left) and Shira Zimmer- School, now the home of the

Together Community Center. The area is named in honor of Katie Kauffman, who retired from running Dutchland in 2016. The courtyard was renovated by Dutchland with help from Underwood Landscaping, Gap Power, Stoltzfus Welding and Rentals, Meadowview Woodwork,s Glick Transport, Quillin Enterprises, and Lime Valley Consultants. The theme of the garden is Psalm 42 and verses from the psalm have been placed throughout, along with benches, plants, and one wandering turtle.

“My whole objective is to bring awareness to the subject,” said Kristin Manser, author of the recently published book “The Invisible Bruise: Finding Freedom and Hope After an Emotionally Abusive Relationship, ” a story she wrote about her experience with this form of abuse. “It was really a dark time for me,” she recalled, adding that manipulation and gaslighting can be confusing and hard to explain. Having overcome her experience, Manser now has the goal of bringing hope to oth-

person who journals regularly. “(Emotional abuse is) a tricky subject,” she said, noting that other types of abuse receive more media attention, but she noted that emotional or psychological abuse can be dangerous as well. “It can cross the line and turn physical, or the person being abused can be so distraught they can hurt themselves,” she said, adding that it can be hard for an abused person to prove to others what is going on. “There’s a fear (in wondering), ‘Will anyone believe me?’” she said. “That was a big part of my book,” she added. The cover of Manser’s book shows a beaten-down woman in tattered clothing with a tattered, red umbrella at her feet. In front of her is a mirror where the same woman is shown standing strong with the umbrella and a rainbow over her head. To create the cover, Manser contacted Lancaster artist Liz Hess. “I have always really valued her work,” said Manser, who worked with Hess to visualize the cover, including the iconic red umbrella Hess is known for using in her work. “I asked for one of her red umbrellas to be crumpled and tattered symbolizing someone being beaten down by abuse, and she was totally on board,” shared Manser. The painting was auctioned to raise funds for the Domestic Violence Service Program (DVS) of Community Action Partnership. Manser is giving a percentage of her book sales to the same organization. Manser has planned her author talks to be informal

ers. “With a topic like this, we need to stand up and attack it and bring it to light,” she said. That is exactly what Manser plans to do with two upcoming author talks. The first will be held at the Ephrata Public Library, 550 S. Reading Road, Ephrata, on Monday, Oct. 25, at 6 p.m., and the second will be held at the ELANCO Library, 11 Chestnut Drive, New Holland, at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 28. Manser said it took her a year to write the book, which grew out of journaling and working with a psychologist to dissect her experience. She said she has always been a

Fairmount from pg 1 Horses of Lancaster County” with Oberholtzer, horses are more of an acquired appreciation. “I found myself in farm fields with any number of horses,” said Herr of his work on the book. “Subjects came up out of curiosity (to give me) a smell or a nuzzle or a gentle nip. I gained a real appreciation for horses and mules.” Oberholtzer and Herr held a multimedia presentation at Fairmount on July 28, explaining how they created the book and sharing experiences of shooting the photos. Oberholtzer explained that the book focuses on both draft horses and carriage horses, noting breeds within those categories that are common in the county. “Most draft animals (in the county) are Belgian horses or mules,” she stated, adding that Percherons and Suffolks may also be seen. Among carriage horses, the pair encountered the popular standardbred and the spirited saddlebred. Oberholtzer also described Morgan horses as smaller and tougher, Dutch harness horses as

stronger and more stylish, and Fresians as sturdy. She also shared interesting facts about the animals, pointing out that she was charmed by a donkey’s huge ears, which can grow to 12 inches, compared to the 7-inch ears of an adult Belgian horse. While they were observing a variety of horses in a number of settings, from farming to driving to training for races, Oberholtzer and Herr gained an appreciation for the relationships between horses and owners and trainers. “They had a clear sense of satisfaction in having an attractive, well-trained horse, and they appreciated it when someone else recognized that,” said Oberholtzer. Herr agreed. “The rapport between the human and equine species is unmistakable,” he said, noting that many of the “ horse folks acted with skill and experience acquired from the cradle on.” Oberholtzer and Herr also shared interesting stories of working with horses and their owners. Oberholtzer described a scene where a

driver’s wife ran ahead of the horse with a container of baby powder, sending poofs of white into the air to attract the horse for a photo, and Herr spoke of his opportunity to drive a buggy, saying that he had not realized the amount of physical force that would be necessary to keep the animal in check. “I would have had sore arms if I had driven more than a half mile,” he reported. Oberholtzer’s experiences included sitting on a hay bale

in a dairy barn with her laptop reviewing photos with a young man sitting on an overturned bucket while his brothers worked to milk the cows around them. Valudes said the event has grown since it was first held and that past dinners have attracted up to 60 attendees. “We would love to have 75 to 100 people,” said Valudes. “That would be fantastic.” She added that the Lions Club would like to raise $3,000 or more for VisionCorps. Prior to joining her sisters, friends, Dutchland workers, and Factory staff in the courtyard for the ribbon cutting, Katie had no idea that the space was being renovated in her name. Zimmerman noted that Dutchland was looking to do a community project in honor of Katie. “She took the company through some very difficult seasons with a lot of grace,” said Zimmerman, who noted that the builder of wastewater treatment management systems was founded by Katie and her husband, Dan, several decades ago. After Dan was involved in a serious accident, Katie took

over and kept the business running until her grown sons could take it over. “What was unusual is that she ran a company as long as she did and that she made sure employees were happy and heard,” shared Zimmerman. Dutchland first suggested the renovation in December 2020. “They took it back to the dirt,” said Zimmerman. “They craned out the gazebos and bricks and craned in tractors to level it and then started laying the foundation for the brick patio.” Adam Nagle, executive director of The Factory, who has a background in landscaping, contributed to

the design of the area, working with Underwood Landscaping, which them implemented the hardscape and the plants. The courtyard has been designed as a place to offer hope, comfort, and peace to members of the local community. “This will be a place specifically for folks in the midst of crisis to find peace,” said Zimmerman. Nagle noted that the area is designed with comfort in mind. “Environment matters,” he said. “The space that surrounds us tells us something, … You matter. You have worth and dignity.”

Mike Caimi of the Liberty War Bird Association stands in front of the Huey helicopter the organization restored. BY ANN MEAD ASH

Mike Caimi has always looked up to Vietnam War helicopter pilots. “They were kinda my heroes,” said Caimi, who admired the young American men for their ability to fly helicopters through the jungles of Southeast Asia. As an adult, he became friends with Jim Haga, a Vietnam Huey pilot who served two tours during the war. “We were talking about restoring a helicopter and getting it out in front of Vietnam veterans,” said Caimi, who worked with Haga and others to form the Liberty War Bird Association, which Caimi now serves as president. In 2015, the organization began to realize Caimi and Haga’s dream when a helicopter, which was discovered in California, made the journey to a hangar in Lititz where it will be used as a “flying museum.” During the Rotary Club of Lancaster’s Wheels and Wings

Festival held at the Lancaster Airport in July, Caimi quickly recounted the history of the Huey before the chopper returned and its thundering sounds drowned out his words. “Our helicopter served in Vietnam from 1968 to 1970,” said Caimi, noting that the bird logged 1,300 combat flight hours. The helicopter first served with C Company of the 101st Aviation Battalion before being involved in an accident that necessitated repairs. In late 1969, the Huey went to the 170th Assault Helicopter Company, where it primarily brought troops in and out of combat landing zones and did some cross- border flights into Cambodia. After being used in Vietnam, the Huey was flown to the Fort Rucker Army Flight School, where it served for five years to train future Army aviators. From there, it was transferred to the Oklahoma National Guard, where

it was used from 1975 to 1994. It was then decommissioned and went to the Texas State Technical College as a training aircraft. In 2012, it was sold to an individual in the helicopter parts industry. “(The new owner) had heard about our organization and how we were looking for a Huey,” said Caimi, who noted that the owner reached out to Liberty thinking the helicopter was in good enough shape to be restored. In March 2015, Caimi went to California and, after a cursory inspection of the helicopter, made a deal. “We had enough money to put a deposit down,” recalled Caimi, who added that a member who was connected to the VFW arranged for donated truck transportation for the helicopter from California to Lancaster. “It took us three years to restore it,” said Caimi, who noted that the work was completed in the Lititz hangar in See War Bird pg 7

The grounds of the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire will get a little creepy when the faire hosts Halloween Days & Spooky Knights. The Halloween-themed weekends will run on Saturdays and Sundays, Oct. 16, 17, 23, 24, 30 and 31, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. “The fairgrounds lend themselves to autumn celebrations,” noted Candace Smith, director of sales and communications, adding that the faire has held the Halloween events for several years. “It was a natural fit.” The weekends will feature all of the usual faire festivities, along with special holiday-themed activities, she stated. Smith set up the Halloween scenario, saying that through his privateering, Sir Walter Raleigh has brought prosperity and commerce to the Shire of Mount Hope, but he’s also brought attention, and some of it is unwanted. “As ships laden with riches traverse the ... rivers and

Along with the faire’s traditional entertainment schedule, including live music, comedy shows and jousts, the weekends will feature Halloween elements. A “Nipperkins” costume contest will be held for children age 11 and under. Adults can also participate in a costume contest that will award prizes for both individual and group costumes. Additional activities will include a treasure hunt, where children will be invited to follow a map and search for buried treasure on the Shire, as well as trick-or-treat throughout the grounds. Fall and Halloween decorations will be on display as well, including Scratchy the pumpkin creature. “Scratchy is over two stories tall Scratchy will greet visitors to the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire’s and greets people each Halloween Days and Spooky Knights.

Listening at lower volumes is a great way to protect hearing and prevent NIHL. Audiologist Sharon A. Sandridge of the Head and Neck Institute at the Cleveland Clinic, notes that volume levels are too high on an individual’s headphones if people standing at arm’s length can hear the music. Another way to avoid NIHL is to purchase activity-specific headphones, earplugs, or earmuffs. These products are designed to block out specific noises, such as from backpack leaf blowers or hunting rifles, and could therefore offer hearing loss protection. Age-related hearing loss may not be preventable. However, individuals can protect themselves from NIHL, and efforts to do so should begin at a young age and continue throughout adulthood.

Aging has long been associated with hearing loss, and the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders notes that age-related hearing loss can arise from changes in the inner ear as the body ages. However, hearing loss can affect people of all ages, including the very young. Some hearing losses are preventable. There are steps everyone can take to protect their hearing and reduce their risk for noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL), such as switching from earbuds to over-the-ear headphones. The Cleveland Clinic noted that over-the-ear headphones encase the ear and are often more effective at canceling outside noise. When outside noise is canceled out, wearers will not need to increase the headphone volume in order to hear their music.

We were able to get a good result in the end.” Coming into the Saturday morning game at Pequea Valley, the Lancaster Mennonite boys’ soccer team had outscored opponents 29-4. The Braves were the next victim of the Blazers’ blazing attack that began with a David Shell score less than two minutes into the match. The Blazers (10-0-2) downed Pequea 4-0, recording 12 shots on goal. Itegi and Gabe McDonald shared time in goal for Pequea (8-2-1), each making two saves. “They’re a very well-organized team,” Bennett said. “We were unfortunate, having played Friday afternoon and turning around to play Saturday morning. I’ll provide addiction education and help guide them in how they can best support their loved one.” Emminger noted that participation in Re-Cap is completely free. “One of the reasons we applied for this grant is because typically in recovery, people have to pay out of pocket for care or they have to use the program attached to a specific facility, which can be very limiting,” she stated. “Our coach will work with the

person regardless of where they are in their recovery or what recovery path they are taking.” DSAA is one of just a handful of agencies to be awarded a grant from the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency, and Emminger is hopeful that once the pilot program is wrapping up, she will be able to apply to fund a second recovery coach. To apply for Re-Cap, visit www.dsasquared.org and fill out a contact form, call the office at 717-492-4596 or send a message through DSAA’s Facebook page.

Through a state grant, Donegal Substance Abuse Alliance (DSAA) is helping people in recovery build wealth. This isn’t monetary wealth, but rather a wealth of resources and support they need to succeed in their recovery journey. “We’re looking at the entire package people in recovery need, whether that’s finding a job or a place to live or rebuilding their relationship with their family,” said Stacy Emminger, executive director of DSAA. “This is called ‘recovery capital,’ and the more stable your recovery capital is, the better your odds of staying in recovery.” The Recovery Capital Program (Re-Cap) is accepting applicants age 18 and older to participate in the program. Although DSAA’s grant is for a two-year pilot program, ReCap participants will commit to the program for one year. During that time, they will work one-on-one with a recovery coach and will have access to certified recovery specialists as well as computer software designed to connect them to community resources, collect data and

monitor progress, Emminger said. “People who are new in recovery, oftentimes they have a bunch of barriers facing them. They might be on probation. They might need to find a job or a place to live,” she explained. “All of these can be barriers to a successful recovery.” DSAA is the first agency in the state to use the Re-Cap software, Emminger said, adding, “All of this is clientdriven, and it’s very individualized, depending on what the client needs.” Over the course of the year, the client initially will meet at least weekly with the coach, but frequency will decrease as recovery stabilizes. “The coach is always available for a text or phone call or a meeting at any time during the year,” Emminger emphasized. The goal at the end of the year is for the client to be self-sufficient in his or her recovery efforts. While the grant will fund the recovery coach, Emminger will head up the family component of Re-Cap. “People who are in recovery have often burned a lot of bridges with their family, and

The Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) offers a reminder to service members and veterans that one of their most important transitioning documents is their DD-214. Safeguarding this important military document should be a top priority. The DD-214 is a document of the United States Department of Defense, issued upon a military service member’s retirement, separation, or discharge from active duty in the Armed Forces of the United States. It contains information needed to verify military service for benefits, retirement, employment, and membership in veterans’ organizations. Without this key document, there could be a substantial delay when veterans seek benefits earned through their service to their country. When veterans lose their DD-214, or family members cannot locate it on a veteran’s behalf, the DMVA will assist in retrieving an official copy. The DMVA will also assist with locating the DD-215, which is used to correct errors or make additions to a DD214, helping to ensure that veterans have accurate discharge documentation. Brig. Gen. Maureen Weigl, deputy adjutant general for Pennsylvania’s Veterans Affairs, recommends that veterans file their military documents in a safe place, such as the prothonotary’s office at their county courthouse, a step that will grant veterans and their family members access to official copies when needed. Anyone needing assistance from the DMVA to locate the DD-214/215 or other military documentation can call 800547-2838 or email rareq@pa.gov. More information about locating military documents can be found by visiting www.dmva.pa.gov/veterans affairs and clicking on “DD214/215 & Records Request Program.” Veterans, family members, and people who work with veterans are welcome to sign up for the DMVA’s Veterans Registry by visiting www.register.dmva.pa.gov.

LUMC Prepares For First Festival Recreational Programs Set BY COURTNEY MENGEL

Lampeter United Methodist Church staff (from left) Tim Strawser, the Rev. John Smith, Jeff Engroff, and Sarah Short look forward to the community harvest festival and barbecue event.

When staff members at Lampeter United Methodist Church (LUMC) were brainstorming ideas for a fall event, secretary Sarah Short made a proposal. Instead of planning something for the church, Short thought it would be best to do some community outreach. “We think it’s time to get people back out and fellowship together,” said Short. “We’ve been trying to grow our children’s ministry, so we’re hoping this event will attract more people to the church.” On Saturday, Oct. 23, LUMC will host its first community harvest festival and barbecue event. The festival will take place at LUMC, 1101 Village Road, Lampeter, See LUMC pg 16

Wiederseim To Sell Collection Of Ed And Carol Stoudt Of Stoudts’ Black Angus Brewery and Pub Sale To Take Place In Phoenixville On July 24

This is a vintage Wurlitzer juke box. Wiederseim Associates is pleased to offer the private collection of Carol and Ed Stoudt for auction on Saturday, July 24, at 9 a.m. The sale includes the contents of the legendary Stoudt’s Black Angus Restaurant and Brewery in Adamstown, Pa., as well as Ed and Carol’s private collection from their home. After over 30 years in business, Ed and Carol have sold the business and are seeking their next adventure.

The couple opened the Black Angus Antique Mall along with the restaurant and beer garden in the 1980s. Business was good. Why not open a brewery? Based on German beers brewed in the Reinheitsgebot tradition, the couple opened the brewery in 1987, with Carol becoming the first female brewmaster in the U.S. since Prohibition. Through the years, the couple traveled and collected extensively

for their business and home. They assembled items such as Black Forest carved furniture (including two tall case clocks), whimsical circus novelties, Art Nouveau brass chandeliers for the beer hall, carousel horses and an unusual carousel

running rooster, vintage posters, a large collection of German steins, a restored 1932 Auburn Convertible and a 1937 Ford Woody, partially restored, all of which will be in the July 24 sale. “If you’ve ever been to Stoudt’s, you’ll be very familiar with the items in this sale and won’t want to miss it. Their Oktoberfests were the best! Ed in his lederhosen leading the procession, the beer hall with great German food and the German band,” said Ted Wiederseim, auctioneer and owner of Wiederseim Associates Inc. “The Stoudt sale will be our first live sale in over a year, and we’re very excited about getting back to business as usual.” Bidding will be live/in-person as well as live online through Bidsquare, Invaluable and Liveauctioneers. A preview starts Monday, July 19, and runs through Friday, July 23, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The sale will be held at Wiederseim’s facility, located at 1041 W. Bridge St., Phoenixville, Pa. For additional information, call 610-827-1910 or visit www.wiederseim.com.

The massive Art Deco brass chandeliers are from Stoudt’s Bier Hall.

July Is Customer Appreciation Month At The Emporium The Historic Burlington Antiques and Art Emporium in Burlington City, N.J., will continue its year-long celebration of 20 years in business with Customer Appreciation Month all July. The Emporium will give away three gift certificates at the end of the month. Three lucky customers will have a chance to win a $50, $25, or $15 gift certificate to the multidealer shop. Each time a customer receives an invoice, they will receive a raffle ticket, thus the more a customer buys, the more chances they have of winning. Also, each month during the summer, the front sales display case will highlight dealer’s best or unusual items from their booth or case. The Emporium will be divided into three sections, starting with its dealers located on Route 130 and ending with the dealers on River Continued on page 5
